About Colosseum Private Tour

For an exclusive and unforgettable experience of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill , a private tour of the Colosseum is the ideal choice. With the expertise of a professional tour guide, your time in ancient Rome will be well spent and you will come away not only with a deeper understanding of ancient Rome but an entirely new appreciation for the ancient Romans and their way of life.

This private tour includes skip-the-line access to the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. During this 3 hour tour you will see the major highlights of the monuments as well as the hidden details of the site that most visitors miss. With just yourself and a local guide, you will truly have a VIP experience of the Colosseum like no other.

The beauty of choosing a private tour of the Colosseum lies not only in the depth of knowledge you will receive but in the flexibility of the itinerary. The tour can be tailored to your needs and the guide can spend more time in areas that you find particularly interesting. A Colosseum private tour is a great option for families with children that are studying the Ancient Roman Empire as well as for those with limited mobility that might fall behind during a group tour.

For visitors that are keen to visit the Colosseum’s restricted areas, a private tour can also accompany you to the Colosseum Arena Floor or Colosseum Underground (the underground portion may be presented by a Colosseum staff member). With a private guide, the tour of the Colosseum is a relaxing and enjoyable experience. You won’t have to worry about large groups or waiting on other travelers.

Taking a private tour of the Colosseum is a wonderful way to explore the hidden treasures of Ancient Rome and its history at your own pace!

Tour Highlights

  • Your Colosseum private tour can include what interests you most! Choose an option with access to the Colosseum Arena Floor or Colosseum Underground. The beauty of booking a private tour of the Colosseum is that you can personalize the itinerary to the areas and topics you want.
  • Explore the fascinating history of Ancient Rome with your own private tour guide. The official guides of Rome are tried and tested so they are guaranteed to know their history. You can rest assured that you will have a professional Colosseum VIP tour.
  • Be ready for history to come to life as your guide details the gladiator battles and wild animal spectacles that took place in the Colosseum. Known as the “100 Day of Games,” the emperors spared no expense to entertain the Roman citizens.
  • Climb the Palatine Hill and explore the ancient remnants of the emperor’s palaces as you enjoy beautiful views of the Circus Maximus and Roman Forum. Choosing a Colosseum Private tour allows you to explore more of the Ancient City than you normally would on a standard group tour.
  • Dive into the layers of history that cover the Roman Forum and get a glimpse into the daily life of its ancient inhabitants. Your guide will be able to go into detail about ancient Roman life as you explore what remains of the temples.
  • Soak up the atmosphere and the history from your personal tour guide as you stroll past broken columns, triumphal arches and impressive facades. The Roman Forum is by far one of the most picturesque places in Rome.
  • Skip-the-line tickets mean you only have to wait through a small security check - no ticket lines at all! And by opting for the Colosseum VIP Tour you will have the ease of wandering through the ancient monument without the hassle of a big group.

Visitor Highlights

  • Embark on a journey to see the greatest archaeological treasures of Ancient Rome with a Colosseum Private Guide. You will visit the Colosseum as well as the archaeological area of the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.
  • Strolling through the Ancient City with your private guide and enjoying the amazing panoramic views of Rome. Most group tours don’t take the time to visit the entirety of the area, but with a private Colosseum tour you can.
  • Having a private guide will ensure you get personal attention from the guide and have ample opportunity to ask about topics that interest you the most. You can spend more time exploring the things you love the most about the Colosseum.
  • You will be able to stop for photos, take breaks and spend more time in areas you find inspiring. Of course learning the history is the highlight, but it is also important to capture the moment with at least a few great photos.
  • Your tour guide will walk you through the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill while detailing its incredible history. This is the most inspiring place in Rome where you can really feel the presence of the Great Roman Empire.
  • Skip-the-line access means you will enter the monuments after a brief security check (wait times can vary depending on capacity). One of the perks of choosing a Colosseum Private tour is that you don’t have to wait around for a large group to get through the security check.
  • The guided tour will last for approximately 3 hours. You will have plenty of time to explore the imperial palaces on the Palatine Hill, the ancient temples in the Roman Forum and, of course, the world-famous Colosseum.
  • Official guides of Rome are available in multiple languages so you can enjoy the visit in your native language!

Travel Tips

  • Make sure to arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled start time, this will ensure you have enough time to find your Colosseum Night Tour meeting point.
  • While there are a few on-site toilets at the Colosseum, the waiting time can take a while. So be prepared!
  • You won’t find any luggage facilities, restaurants or cafes on-site.
  • All of the entrances to the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill have a mandatory security check. This check cannot be avoided and is necessary for the safety of all visitors.
  • Only small bags are allowed inside the Colosseum. No luggage or bags with wheels are allowed.
  • Do not bring weapons, aerosol sprays or glass containers.
  • The people with reduced mobility can easily access the Colosseum as paths at all the available routes are marked. Some tours may not be wheelchair accessible, so be sure to check the tour details or opt for a private tour.
  • It is highly recommended to get your tickets ahead of time online and because tours for the Colosseum at night sell out fast.
  • The Colosseum tour prices vary and can cost anywhere from 30€ up to 100€, or more. The type of tour you choose will be reflected in the price and duration of the tour.

  • Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill entrance ticket and reservation fee

Sites Visited

Visiting the Colosseum is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that stays with visitors for a long time after they’ve returned home. Make the best of your bucket-list day with your own private tour , spending time at the sites that interest you most and finding answers to all your questions.

For three hours your dedicated English-speaking guide will lead you around the three major sights of Ancient Rome – the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. As experts in their field, our Rome tour guides are the perfect people to lead your Colosseum adventure, telling you the stories that bring the stones to life. Hear about the Emperors who built, burned and rebuilt the Colosseum; debunk popular myths about the mighty gladiators (many of whom chose this profession!), and learn about some unlikely uses for an amphitheater that once held 82,000 Ancient Romans.

With our guides on hand to answer all of your questions and tell you the stories and legends you’d never hear otherwise, you’ll get more from an hour in the Colosseum than you could in an entire day with a guidebook.

We have Reserved Entrance Access not just at the Colosseum, but also at the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill – which is exactly where you’re going next. While the Colosseum may be the biggest draw card in Ancient Rome, the Palatine Hill is more important from a historic and archaeological point of view, as the birthplace of this mighty empire. Here you’ll hear about the abandoned boys raised by a she-wolf, and see the foundations of ancient palaces.

The Roman Forum is the most telling of all the ruins. This was the heart of Ancient Rome, home to its moneylenders, stores, political rallies and the famous Via Sacra – ‘The Sacred Way’, once marched by victorious Roman armies on their return home. Here your guide will unravel some of the most interesting tales of Ancient Rome. Stories of the rise and fall of Caesar or the Vestal Virgins who were endowed with the power to choose life or death for condemned men.

While the Colosseum is undoubtedly a highlight of any tour, it’s only a fraction of the full picture. Dig a little deeper with your own expert guide, rebuilding the great empire of Rome from the ground up on our Private Colosseum Tours – perfect for that once-in-a-lifetime visit.

Important Notes

  • Every customer on this tour is required to present a valid government issued ID or Passport at the Colosseum, that matches their name on the reservation, or entry will be refused. Name changes are not permitted once the booking is confirmed.
  • On this tour, some of the venues or parts of the venue may be subject to last-minute, unpredictable closures. When this occurs, we are happy to offer customers an extended tour in keeping with the advertised total length of the tour.
  • Due to increased security measures at many attractions some lines may form on tours with Skip-the-Line access.

Cancelation Policy

Due to the fact that Colosseum entry tickets must be purchased using the full name of each passenger and cannot be modified or canceled, no refund will be given for any tour cancelation once the tickets are purchased on the passengers’ behalf (32 days before the travel date).

The itinerary is the same for both options. On a Private tour you will have your own dedicated tour guide and you will be able to experience the tour at your own pace.

We strongly advise against arriving at the meeting point without a booking as we cannot guarantee that there will be space left on the tour. Rome Colosseum tour

This is the de facto, fully private tour of the majestic Colosseum of Rome with your own expert archaeologist guide.

No other Rome tour comes close to unearthing as much history of the Colosseum as this two-hour walk into a bygone world when men and beasts clashed for the pleasure of the people of Rome!

Meet your archaeologist guide beside Trajan’s Column, its beguiling bas-relief a story which tells all passers-by of his victories in the Dacian Wars (101 – 106 AD).

From there, we approach the Roman Forum and stroll back in time to the core of Rome in antiquity. This is where historical fact blurs with mythology. Most emperors were adored and adorned, others slain, several forgotten, some deified! You will hear the best-known names such as Julius Caesar, Augustus, and Mark Antony; indeed, the full historical scope of Imperial Rome and the Roman Republic which preceded it will be delivered by your expert archaeologist guide.

Just a few steps away, the mighty Colosseum awaits. Enjoy privileged skip-the-line entrance granted to you by us through the Gladiator’s Gate. Once inside, you will be able to walk across the original arena floor with your guide, marveling at the 360-degree view of the Icon of Rome while hearing about the making of a gladiator and what the games meant to Romans.

After exploring each level and all the views, your guide will leave you to explore further on your own should you wish. After the Colosseum, make your way over to the Palatine Hill, where, according to the legend of Romulus and Remus, two baby boys washed ashore on the banks of the River Tiber and grew up to found the great city of Rome.

Colosseum Private Tour

  • 9.40 / 10 87 reviews | 1,861 travellers We arrived 25 minutes early and the guide was right at the point indicated and ready. Vicenzo was very eloquent, entertaining and friendly from the first minute. He kept the whole group very attentive to the explanations and managed the timing excellently. He really showed great passion and I dare say he is the best guide we have ever had. Clear, deep explanations, but above all very entertaining so as not to make the journey heavy (which it physically was). In the end we took a photo with him as a souvenir. Thanks Vincent!!! 10 Daniel Alberto

The 5 best rome colosseum tours with skip-the-line access.

Gladiators battled on the arena floor. A good guide will help you battle the crowds.

The Best Rome Colosseum Tours

Rome Colosseum views from an ArcheoRunning tour.

Courtesy of ArcheoRunning

As the most enduring symbol of the Roman Empire and one of the most famous landmarks in the world, the Colosseum receives more than 6 million visitors per year, so it's not easy to escape the crowds. A visit is worth it, though, if you want to see the world's largest amphitheater – once known as the Flavian Amphitheater – and try to imagine what it would have been like 2,000 years ago.

A standard ticket to the Colosseum also includes access to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, so many (but not all) tours also include those ancient sites. Inside the ancient complex, there is very little signage explaining what you're looking at. A good guide will not only get you skip-the-line access but also bring these incredible places to life. Keep in mind that most Colosseum tours only give you access to the arena floor and upper level. If you want to visit the underground hypogeum, you need to make sure it's included in the tour.

Crown Tours: Skip the line Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum tour

Price: Adults from $84; kids from $67 Duration: 3 hours

Standout perk: Engaging guides speak several languages.

Selected by GetYourGuide as a Certified Experience, this group tour starts at the Colosseum, then takes you to the Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum. Groups consist of up to 30 people, and tourgoers are given headsets so they can better hear and follow the guide. The tour meets at Largo Gaetana Agnesi on the hill overlooking the Colosseum about 30 minutes before the official entry time to get everyone checked in and set up with headsets. The guide then leads participants into the Colosseum and up to the second level, where there's a chance to stop and take photos. On the way back down, there's another photo-op at the arena level before the guide leads the group over to the Palatine Hill and Roman Forum.

Crown Tours also offers guided tours of the Vatican, Sistine Chapel and Saint Peter's Basilica, as well as the Borghese Gallery, Pantheon and other sites.

Local tip: This tour is offered over a variety of time slots every day. Pick one of the earlier time slots to make sure you'll finish up by lunchtime.

Through Eternity Tours: Ultimate Colosseum Tour with Roman Forum & Palatine Hill

House of the Vestal Virgins at the Roman Forum.

Price: Adults from $105; kids from $95 Duration: 3 hours

Standout perk: This tour includes the Palatine Hill, which some tours skip.

Recent visitors praise the knowledgeable guides for their passion about ancient history and keeping the tour moving while explaining everything in detail. This tour starts at 9:30 a.m. seven days a week and finishes up around lunchtime. In addition to the Colosseum, highlights include the Via Sacra and the House of the Vestal Virgins in the Roman Forum, as well as the Farnese Gardens on the Palatine Hill.

This tour starts at 9:15 a.m. daily. Groups are limited to 10 people; if six or more people are taking the tour, the guide gives out headsets so everyone can hear. Participants are asked to meet 10 minutes before the start time in front of Cafe/Restaurant Angelino ai Fori on Largo Corrado Ricci. The tour is stroller-accessible, but not wheelchair-accessible. Participants should wear comfortable shoes and bring a water bottle, especially on hot days.

Through Eternity Tours offers a variety of group and private tours of Rome and other destinations, including Florence , Naples and Pompeii.

Local tip: Book a table at the nearby Taverna dei Fori Imperiali to enjoy a leisurely lunch after the tour.

LivTours: The Best of Colosseum & Ancient Rome With Exclusive Arena Access

Interior of the Colosseum from The Best of Colosseum & Ancient Rome With Exclusive Arena Access tour from LiveTours.

Courtesy of LivTours

Price: Adults from $163; kids from $145 Duration: 3 hours

Standout perk: Virtual reality headsets show what the ancient sites would have looked like.

Recent tourgoers praise the guides on this tour for bringing the facts and stories about ancient Rome to life. Along with the confirmation email, participants receive an invitation to download an app. During the tour, the guide gives everyone a cardboard virtual reality headset that works with the app and shows a reconstruction of the Colosseum and the surrounding valley. After visiting the Colosseum, the tour continues to the Palatine Hill and Roman Forum, where the virtual reality headsets show you a reconstruction of the Circus Maximus and the structures in the Roman Forum. At all the sites, you get skip-the-line access.

These semiprivate tours are guaranteed to have no more than six people, making them a more personalized experience than other group tours. However, because the tours are small, the guides don't use headsets, and some participants noted that it can be difficult to hear the guide over the noise in the Colosseum.

Local tip: You can get some great photos from the upper level, especially if you stand at the apex of the oval.

Roma Experience: Private Colosseum Tour With Roman Forum & Palatine Hill

View of the Colosseum exterior on a Roma Experience Private Colosseum Tour With Roman Forum & Palatine Hill.

Courtesy of Roma Experience

Price: From $531 Duration: 2 hours 45 minutes

Standout perk: See these ancient sites with an archaeologist who dug at the Roman Forum.

For a deeper understanding (no pun intended) of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, a tour with Elisa Valeria Bove, CEO of Roma Experience, is one of the best you can buy. She studied archaeology and has been involved in excavations at the Roman Forum and other sites, so she's just the person to guide you if you want to get beyond the surface level. Her private tours range from just under three hours for a skip-the-line Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill tour to the full-day "See Rome in One Day" tour, which also includes a guided visit of the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. Be sure to specify if you want to visit the hypogeum when you book.

Roma Experience organizes bespoke private tours throughout Italy, including multiday itineraries. Bove will work with you to customize your experience and bring you to places you wouldn't think to visit, like Quintili's Villa on the ancient Appian Way.

Local tip: If you want to see another incredible archaeological park, let Bove take you to Ostia Antica, less than an hour from Rome.

Imago Artis Travel: Timeless Tales of Gods and Laymen of the Ancient Rome

View in between buildings of the Colosseum on an Imago Artis Travel Timeless Tales of Gods and Laymen of the Ancient Rome tours.

Courtesy of Imago Artis Travel

Price: On request Duration: 4 hours

Standout perk: This tour includes the Pantheon in addition to the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.

Founded by three art historians with a passion for Roman art and history, Imago Artis Travel offers bespoke private tours of Rome and beyond. Imago Artis works closely with their clients to craft personalized itineraries that highlight the city's most incredible monuments and hidden gems. This tour lasts a half-day and includes the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill and Pantheon, with an optional stop for espresso, but you can customize the itinerary to do a full-day tour or multiday itinerary.

Other itineraries that include the Colosseum bring visitors to the Basilica of San Clemente, known as the "lasagna church" because it was built in layers: The deeper you descend, the further back in time you go. Imago Artis also grants visitors exclusive access to off-limits places, such as a church overlooking the Roman Forum. The company also organizes multiday itineraries throughout Italy.

Local tip: There's an element of surprise and delight with Imago Artis that's hard to find elsewhere, especially if your guide is Fulvio De Bonis, one of the company's founders.

Your LivTours Private Colosseum Guided Tour with Underground and Ancient Rome starts opposite the impressive facade of the Colosseum, where you will meet your private expert guide. From here, you will make your way towards the Roman Forum on foot. Your private guide will point out the open-air ancient ruins as they share with you the rich history of this important place. Stop for a moment before you enter the extensive excavation of the Roman Forum, as the views are just stunning from this perspective. Your private guide will bring to life Roman’s typical days from 2000 years ago. Marvel at the ruins of ancient temples, theaters, and government buildings while walking down the streets of ancient Rome. Covered in the original stones,  imagine the great men who have walked these same streets. Imagine life as a Roman citizen during the height of the Roman Empire!

Your next stop is the Palatine Hill. You and your private guide will take an easy stroll up to the top of the hill where you can imagine the imperial residence in its full glory through the engaging stories from your private guide. The Roman emperors, known for their panache for glamour and bling, this area is sure to impress! After a complete tour of this ancient site, you will head to one of the most iconic sites of Rome – the Colosseum!

As you stroll past the site of the Roman Forum, your tour guide will paint a picture of the colorful parades of Roman soldiers as they passed under the magnificent Arch of Constantine, commemorating the victory. As you approach the Colosseum,  take a moment to imagine what game day was like 2,000 years ago. You will enjoy exclusive Priority Access, so there will not be any waiting in line.

Once you are inside the Colosseum, you will get a chance to admire this amazing triumph of ancient engineering. Your private guide will help paint a vivid,  though grimacing picture, of the blood and carnage of the countless gladiatorial fights that took place inside this ancient amphitheater.  Your guide will tell you about the great men who lost their lives in battles here, who they were, and what led them to such a horrific fate!  You will find out who got the best seats in the house in the front row and who got seated in the nosebleed section. Learn how animals were used during the battles, how they were strategically imported to shock, and how they controlled their audiences.

GROUP TOUR OF COLOSSEUM RESTRICTED AREAS Your private LivTours guide will now take you to join one of the Colosseum’s on-site archeologists and a group of 25 people maximum (for this portion of the tour only) as you gain access to the two restricted areas of the Colosseum. Just brilliant

I was blown away by Marco and the tour. He was fantastic with my mum; knowledgeable and passionate about his role is an understatement - he was fabulous. Thanks to the experience we had with Marco for our tour, yours will be our 'go to' company and I will recommend your company to anyone who is looking to book a tour.

Being in Ancient Rome

We had a lovely tour (in German) with Julia. She made us feel very welcomed and comfortable straight away. We felt she had a great knowledge of the history and architecture of the Colloseum and the Forum Romanum. At the end of our tour she suggested a little spot for lunch and also that we check out the local farmers market close to circus maximus on the weekend. Loved the farmers market! Would definitely tour with her again!

Amazing day in Ancient Rome

We thoroughly enjoyed our day with Luca. We laughed, we learned, and had amazing experiences that we will never forget. I will always book through LivTours

Greatest way to experience ancient Rome

We chose this tour with the possibility of going underneath the Colosseum and we felt we had a much more complete experience, thanks to it. You can't just wonder around down there (for obvious security reasons) but it's amazing what is still there from more than 2,000 years ago. The building of the Colosseum was an amazing engineering feat and to be able to see "behind the scenes" was just awesome. We were also very happy to have had such a great guide. Her name was Giulia and, as a history and archeology expert, she was just a fountain of information and fascinating stories. The Colosseum and Forum represent the heart of roman history -- do it right and take this tour!!

Fantastic experience

We splurged for a private tour and, boy, were we happy we did! To have our wonderful guide, Davide, all to ourselves; to be able to set our own pace and spend more time where we wanted and less where we were less interested; to stop, rest, take pictures whenever we wanted -- it was a luxury and a complete joy! Especially since to visit the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, you're talking about alot of ground to cover and alot of history to take in. We know this company also does small group tours which might have been just as satisfying but when we saw the bigger group tours and the looks of boredom and exhaustion, we were even more convinced that we had spent our money well and got the best possible experience!

By selecting Choose Dates Later / Buy as Gift at booking, any tour can be purchased without fixed dates. Tour Description

Discover ancient rome on a small group tour .

A walking tour of Rome is the perfect introduction to the city, covering the most important archaeological sites. You’ll discover the truth behind the legends of the gladiators and the arena on your Colosseum tour , and gain new insight into this magnificent monument. Continuing on your Roman Forum tour, as you stroll through the atmospheric ruins, your expert guide will help you to understand the politics and power plays that animated the ancient city. Then there’s the peaceful Palatine Hill, where the history of Rome began with Romulus and Remus. You'll visit the impressive remains of the imperial palaces and admire the stunning views of the Colosseum and the Roman Forum from the top of the hill.

With an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide to lead the way, you’ll end your in-depth tour of the Flavian Amphitheater, Forum and Palatine Hill with a much greater understanding and appreciation of Rome - a city that continues to amaze its visitors nearly three thousand years later.

Our groups are small, with a maximum of 10 people, and we buy all our tickets in advance so you can skip the lines and spend more time exploring Rome, rather than waiting around.

Learn about the bloody spectacles of the ancient games

The ancient Colosseum is undoubtedly the most amazing monument in Rome, built on a vast scale in less than ten years. The spectacles that took place here were like nothing seen before or since, and they were designed to entertain not only the people of Rome, but also the emperor himself.

The gladiatorial games are legendary, and on your tour of the Colosseum you’ll learn the difference between fact and fiction. But you’ll also discover that truth is often stranger than fiction, as you hear stories of wild animal hunts, mass executions, naval battles, and violent re-enactments of Greek myths that all took place in the arena. You’ll learn about everything that went on behind the scenes, including the amazing machinery that made the spectacles possible and so popular. For the rare opportunity to descend into the Colosseum’s Underground to see these machines and mechanisms up close, check out our Colosseum Underground Tour .

There was more to the games than meets the eye, and the entertainment at the Colosseum also had an important political role. Your expert guide will help you to understand the Colosseum in context, explaining what the games meant not only for the slaves and gladiators who took part, but for the whole of ancient Rome.

Explore the heart of ancient Rome in the Roman Forum

A Roman Forum group tour is an opportunity to learn about Roman history in the very place where the events took place.

These atmospheric ruins were once the political heart of the ancient city. You begin in front of the Senate, the imposing building used for the meetings and heated debates of the Republic. In the gardens and the House of the Vestal Virgins you’ll learn about the extraordinary lives and deaths of the priestesses who were tasked with ensuring Rome's sacred flame remained forever lit. We'll also visit the basilica of Julia and the basilica of Maxentius, the most important courthouses of the ancient city. The famous public trials that took place in these basilicas contributed to the fame of great historical figures such as Cicero and Caesar, whose orations were highly praised by their contemporaries.

Your walk through the Forum continues with a visit to the temples, as you explore the impressive ruins of the temples of Saturn and Castor and Pollux. Here you’ll learn about the Roman gods and the early days of Christianity, which often overlapped in unexpected ways - as you’ll see at the temple of Antoninus and Faustina, an ancient Roman temple that was transformed into a Catholic church. On your group tour of Rome you’ll also walk along one of the most important Roman roads of all, the Via Sacra, where you can still see the wheel-ruts of the carriages that passed over its flagstones for centuries.

The triumphal arches are another highlight of our visit to Ancient Rome, and you’ll be amazed by the Arch of Titus and the Arch of Septimius Severus, which dramatically represent the conquests of the Roman Empire.

See the palaces of the emperors on our Palatine Hill tour

Often overlooked by other tour companies, the Palatine Hill is one of the most beautiful parts of the ancient city. It’s also the oldes: according to legend, this was the place where the young and abandoned Romulus and Remulus were discovered by a she-wolf, and where Romulus eventually founded the city of Rome.

For centuries it was the most desirable part of Rome, as the lush hill offers stunning views of the city. The villas of the Roman aristocracy were later replaced by the enormous, luxurious villas of the emperors. On your Palatine tour you’ll explore the vast Flavian Palace, the Baths of Septimius Severus, and the Stadium of Domitian. These ruins are impressive in their own right, with their colonnades and mosaics, but hearing about the excesses the emperors indulged in here will give you a whole new perspective!

The Palatine Hill is also the perfect place to escape the heat of the city. Take a relaxing stroll in the shady Farnese Gardens of Pope Paul III, where you’ll learn about Renaissance Rome and enjoy an unparalleled view of ancient Rome - this is sure to be one of the most memorable parts of your experience.

Frank was a fabulous guide. His knowledge, experience and psssion was shared with the group. He was careful of us as it was very hot and was mindful to keep us in the shade as much as possible. Great tour!

Renee - Aug 26, 2023

Our Italian-American guide was the best of the best. She was very knowledgeable and very enthusiastic about her job! She as also very patient with me and my semi-limited mobility. She provided an alternate to me visiting one of the sites and provided me with elevator access in the Coliseum. That way I could appreciate the full extent of the tour without affecting other tour members' experience! Would definitely recommend Through Eternity tours to anyone visiting Rome!

Colosseum Private Tours

Colosseum Private Tour

When visiting the Eternal City of Rome, Italy, the allure of its ancient history beckons from every corner. A standout amongst these historical marvels is undoubtedly the Colosseum. However, the way you experience this grand amphitheater can make all the difference. In this article, we will discuss the differences between Colosseum private tours and other group tours, and we will list the alternatives for private tours. We hope our review will be useful to you.

The Superiority of Private Tours

Visiting the Colosseum, an iconic symbol of ancient Rome, is an unparalleled experience, and the type of tour you choose can significantly influence your enjoyment.

The standard Colosseum ticket costs 18 euros, allowing entrance but leaving you mostly on your own. Alternatively, you might opt for a 30-40 person group tour, priced usually between 60-70 euros. This offers guidance and historical context but can feel impersonal due to the large group size. For those seeking a more intimate and engaging experience, private Colosseum tours are available.

Though more expensive due to the exclusivity, these tours are either individual or for small private groups, such as 4 or 6 persons, providing a more attentive and responsive tour guide. In the often crowded atmosphere of the Colosseum, especially in the bustling summer season when up to 3000 people might be present at once, private tours offer a much-improved travel experience. Attendees can easily ask questions and fully absorb the guide’s knowledge without the distractions of a larger crowd.

The personalized attention also ensures that families with young children are well-catered for. Thus, while standard Colosseum tickets and group tours offer affordability and broad historical insight, private tours stand out as an optimal choice for those desiring a more enriching and personalized journey through this ancient amphitheater.

The tours featured on our website can be compared not only in terms of price but also based on the ratings of participants. Almost all of the tours we feature on our website are rated at least 4.5 stars out of 5 , and we do not include Colosseum tours that have received negative feedback from participants. We understand that when reserving a tour, user feedback is just as critical as the cost. That’s why we collate the best of Colosseum Private Tours for you. Scroll below to explore these options.

Alternatives of Colosseum Private Tours

Colosseum early morning tours:.

  • Time of Day: Usually conducted before the Colosseum opens to the public, early morning tours provide an exclusive view of this ancient structure.
  • Group Size: Typically organized for small groups, making it an intimate and special experience.
  • Seasonal Benefit: Particularly beneficial during the hot summer season in Rome. Exploring the Colosseum in the early hours avoids the scorching heat of midday.
  • Experience: Offers an experience akin to a private tour, allowing visitors to explore without the crowds.

Colosseum Night Tours:

  • Time of Day: Conducted after the Colosseum is closed to large crowds, the night tours enable visitors to see the amphitheater in a tranquil setting.
  • Group Size: Limited in number, ensuring a more personalized and serene experience.
  • Seasonal Benefit: Like the early morning tours, night tours are a logical choice in the sweltering summer months, allowing exploration in cooler temperatures.
  • Experience: An extraordinary opportunity to see the Colosseum under the stars, offering a magical and different perspective.

Colosseum Underground Tours:

  • Coverage: The most comprehensive option, including the Colosseum itself, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, and the Hypogeum (the underground sections of the Colosseum).
  • Access: Since access to the Colosseum’s underground is highly restricted, these tours are exclusive but come at a higher price.
  • Experience: Similar to private tours, the underground tours present a more personalized experience and allow in-depth exploration.
  • Unique Feature: Offers an unparalleled view of the underbelly of the Colosseum, something not included in standard tours.

Exploring Beyond the Colosseum

If your budget allows, we highly recommend booking a private tour encompassing the entirety of Rome. Beyond the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, there is so much more to the city waiting to be discovered. With a well-informed guide at your disposal, you’ll explore Rome in its entirety, free from the hassles of direction-finding, ticket purchasing, and navigating through the crowds. We’ve also compiled the best Rome Private Tours for you. Our top picks for the best Colosseum Private Tours and Rome Private Tours are below:

In conclusion, Colosseum Private Tours offer a superior, personalized, and flexible experience. So why not make the most of your Roman adventure with a private tour? You’ll be investing not just in a tour, but in memories that will last a lifetime.

Just looking for advice, I wasn’t able to secure the underground tickets I was wanting (I tried for 3 hours in the middle of the night :( I can only get the arena floor tickets. Should I just choose those or go with a private tour? I have to go in the morning as I have the Scavi tour in the afternoon? Is the audio guide enough information?

That being said, we really did enjoy the Belvedere tour we took in 2017…the upper levels had just reopened in October that year and we were notified by CoopCulture that we could access the 4th and 5th levels with our tickets. Since then, they again closed those upper levels for several years for repairs, but they seem to now be reopened and referred to as the “attic”. We thought the views from the top level were stunning! The climb up was a bit steep with no handrails that I remember, so I would not recommend it for anyone with mobility issues.

Yes I did the Belvedere tour in 2017 as well! Wonderful tour. I think I will just buy the arena tickets. The reviews on private tours are mixed anyway. Thanks!

If anyone has another option let me know!

This is my feeling on the underground tickets, from the article on buying tickets pinned to the top of this forum:

' class=

Be aware that if you go with a tour company they may not be able to get tickets to the underground for the time you booked and may offer you a different time. That happened to us. We had booked a tour in the morning and were later offered one in the afternoon which we couldn't make as we had booked something else (which, ironically, was later cancelled).

Thank you. I feel much better about booking the arena tickets. Now I can move on and plan my day.

Thanks everyone for your time :)

The 5 Best Rome Colosseum Tours With Skip-the-Line Access

A s the most enduring symbol of the Roman Empire and one of the most famous landmarks in the world, the Colosseum receives more than 6 million visitors per year, so it's not easy to escape the crowds.

Price: Adults from $84; kids from $67

Duration: 3 hours

Price: Adults from $105; kids from $95

360 Kiosk Email : Tips on Trips and Expert Picks

LivTours: The Best of Colosseum & Ancient Rome With Exclusive Arena Access

Price: Adults from $163; kids from $145

Price: From $531

Duration: 2 hours 45 minutes

Price: On request

Duration: 4 hours
