Comedy review: Ruby Wax at the Playhouse

I’m Not As Well As I Thought I Was , is the name of Ruby Wax's new tour. So what exactly ails her and is there a cure?

Untitled 1 Copy

Where to start with Ruby Wax? Wikipedia tells us and I quote “Ruby Wax OBE is a British-American actress, comedian, writer, television personality, and mental health campaigner.”

Or we might say she is one of the comedy powerhouses behind the scripts for Absolutely Fabulous . Perhaps an even better description is that, over many years, she has carved a niche for herself in our cultural zeitgeist as a voice that can be both comical and meaningful.

In any case, she is a much-loved talent with a strong following. This was evident at the Playhouse last night, when a large cohort of local fans turned out to support her.

Ruby has a new book out, so the tour is to promote and celebrate that. The title is I’m Not As Well As I Thought I Was. A classic Ruby-ism. And the show dramatized the writings therein. As Ruby said in the intro: in this show she is doing acting rather than stand-up. The stage set consisted of a cream-coloured armchair, a table that doubled as a bed and the odd prop. Ruby was resplendent in her multi-coloured pyjamas and fluffy slippers. Voiceovers and sound effects added to her performance. But what was it all about?

she punctuates the joking around with real world references

Ruby Wax mines a seam of life that runs through mental health, mindfulness, meditation. She champions these issues while remaining down-to-earth enough to satirize the more absurd elements of the modern well being industry. For example, her impressions of German whale song singers, no one could keep a straight face through that routine. Also, her diarylike recounting of stays in mental hospitals, monasteries, and Buddhist retreats. Whacky anecdotes all of which, she swears to the audience, are true. Twinges of hypochondria, self-obsession and yet also a scarred childhood are all there.

But just in case anyone thought this was simply obsessing about the lives of middle-class Londoners, wrapped up in their own minor dilemmas, she punctuates the joking around with real world references to Afghanistan and Syria, as well as her husband’s prostate cancer. The word trauma crops up, an ‘Oprah word’ as Ruby terms it. But she is reluctant to use it for her own psychological ailments. Ruby is grounded. She’s got perspective. She tells it like it is.

The first half jogged along for over and hour and ended with Ruby parading the stage while waving a huge Union Jack. To loud cheering, by the way. And then after the break, she reconvened the audience for a Q&A.

All in all, a successful night. Ruby is trying to make sense of our world. And while doing so, she takes the audience along for the ride. A ride that makes you laugh and then makes you think.

Ruby Wax’s I’m Not As Well As I Thought I Was played at the Nottingham Playhouse on May 29 th 2024.

Ruby Wax returns to the stage with I'm Not As Well As I Thought I Was

Friday 3rd March 2023, 11:16am

Ruby Wax

  • Ruby Wax: I'm Not As Well As I Thought I Was will tour September and November 2023
  • In the show, Wax will talk about how she ended up in a mental institution after having undertaken some mindfulness journeys
  • It will see "Ruby pushing boundaries, and making her mark as one of the most important voices in mental health today"

Ruby Wax is to tour the UK with her show I'm Not As Well As I Thought I Was between September and November 2023 .

Her promoters say: "After 4 years, Ruby Wax returns to stage, following her critically acclaimed, sell out tour, How To Be Human . A stage adaptation of her upcoming book, set for release 11th May 2023 . Renowned for her comedy, her fearless approach to tackling mental well-being, and her ability to make audiences laugh and cry in equal measure. I'm Not As Well As I Thought I Was , is set to be Ruby's rawest, darkest, funniest and most compelling stage show yet.

"In 2022 , Ruby Wax went on a search to find meaning. She booked a series of potentially life-changing journeys. In the Dominican Republic, she went swimming with humpback whales; she joined a Christian monastery; in Greece, she worked in a refugee camp; in California, she did a silent 30-day mindfulness retreat. The search to find meaning was about to take her in a different direction, no longer journeying in the outside world but within her own mind, and this inner journey would turn out to be the most life-changing journey of all."

She elaborates: "The original idea behind this show was based on the extreme journeys that I wanted to take in order to find an antidote to living a frazzled life. Along the way I wanted to find meaning, peace, happiness - the stuff we're all chasing. However, after some transcendent experiences, I ended up in a mental institution. Obviously, I didn't find what I was looking for."

The promoters conclude: "Directed by writer and an Olivier Award-winning director Clare Lizzimore , I'm Not As Well As I Thought I Was , will see Ruby pushing boundaries, and making her mark as one of the most important voices in mental health today."

Ruby Wax in I’m Not As Well As I Thought I Was at the Soho theatre.

Ruby Wax: I’m Not As Well As I Thought I Was review – wandering towards wellness

Soho theatre, London This one-woman play aims to dramatise Wax’s globe-trotting spiritual quest but gets sidetracked into anecdote

T his isn’t what she usually does, Ruby Wax confides in the preface to her show; this is a play. And so an expectation is set that I’m Not As Well As I Thought I Was does not, alas, meet. This autobiographical show is a companion to Wax’s recent memoir , recounting her worldwide adventures in pursuit of enlightenment, which lead our narrator – unexpectedly – to a mental health clinic. The ingredients are here for a telling narrative, in which Wax’s outward searching gives way to an inward quest. But those ingredients aren’t assembled effectively, in a show that too often feels like one disconnected globe-trotting anecdote after another.

Those anecdotes – told by Wax in pink pyjamas, with an office chair, table and laptop for a set – can be entertaining in themselves. Whether struggling with the strictures of a meditative 30-day retreat in Marin County or taking up residence in a Yorkshire monastery – but not so much, understandably, when rescuing Afghan refugees – wicked, self-mocking Ruby knows how to raise a smile. But even then, the quality of the jokes is distinctly variable: see “I shit myself” as the punchline to two separate tales of whale-watching in the Caribbean.

The problem is that Wax has set the compelling opening scenes of her play (directed by Alison Summers) in the clinic where she’s receiving treatment for severe depression. The globetrotting stories are told in flashback, which invites us to parse them for clues to her mental condition – clues that are seldom forthcoming. That makes all the comic detail Wax stuffs in (character sketches of macho whalers; random trips to the doctor; relieving herself by the side of the road en route to a book reading) feel extraneous.

There’s no great revelation about our host’s mental ill-health, but more detail about its origins in her parents’ flight from the Nazis, and her harsh upbringing in the US. Wax concludes with a statement of her own rootlessness (“wherever I’m standing is my home”), which makes some retrospective sense of the meandering paths the show has trod. At the time, though, it does feel like a lot of meandering.

Ruby Wax: I’m Not As Well As I Thought I Was

Description.

An unmissable opportunity to see Ruby Wax’s rawest, darkest, funniest and most compelling stage show yet. Following a complete sell-out of the tour in 2023, she’s back due to popular demand.

The show explores Ruby’s personal quest for an antidote to a frazzled life, seeking meaning and happiness. “I wanted to find meaning, peace, happiness – the stuff we’re all chasing. However, after some transcendent experiences, I ended up in a mental institution…Obviously, I didn’t find what I was looking for.”

Wax has been open about her struggles with bipolar disorder and depression. Reflecting on years of personal and professional experience, she will discuss her struggles with mental health and different treatments over the years, hoping to provide reassurance and guidance to anyone confronting their own anticipated, or unanticipated, struggles with mental health.

Ruby Wax at Glasgow’s Aye Write Festival 2023

Glasgow’s Aye Write Festival opened 2023 with the fantastically funny Ruby Wax talking about her new book I’m Not as Well as I Thought I Was , where she documents her existential journey to try and find happiness, and deals with serious, and unexpected, mental health issues in the process.

Being a successful writer and comedian, Ruby knows success and money don’t bring happiness, and she embarks on a tour of experiences to see where they bring her, mainly with a light-hearted touch and a desire to face new challenges. She swims with whales in the Dominican Republic, spends 30 days in a silence retreat in California, joins a Christian monastery, but then ends up in a mental health clinic when depression takes over.

Ruby talks about turning life into a comedy in order to help herself cope. She always wants to keep herself busy – too busy at times, being restless, curious, a bit frantic – but says that when her calendar starts to fill up too much, and she starts going to dinner parties with people she doesn’t know, she twigs that depression might be rising again, and uses her mindfulness practice to rebalance. This time, however, mindfulness wouldn’t cut it, and she requires treatment in a facility get back to her usual self, which you could call ‘bubbly’ or witty and vivacious, and Trump once called ‘aggressive with a smile’.

She is very open about mental illness and destigmatising it, and runs a charity called the Frazzle café (frazzlecafe.org) for people to meet and talk in a supportive environment. She has an OBE for her services to mental health. She studied at the RSAMD in Glasgow and says she loves the city.

Ruby Wax: I'm Not As Well As I Thought I Was

After a complete sell-out first run in 2023, Ruby Wax's rawest, darkest, funniest and most compelling stage show yet announces brand new dates for 2024, thanks to enormous demand.

“The original idea behind this show was based on the extreme journeys that I wanted to take in order to find an antidote to living a frazzled life. Along the way I wanted to find meaning, peace, happiness – the stuff we’re all chasing. However, after some transcendent experiences, I ended up in a mental institution.

Obviously, I didn’t find what I was looking for.”

‘I’m Not As Well As I Thought I Was’ is Ruby’s first tour show in four years following her critically acclaimed, sell-out tour, ‘How To Be Human’.

Age restriction: 14+
