10 Browser Extensions for Designers (and Non- Designers)

Alesya Denga

Many of us seek tips and tricks to simplify our work — designers included. Some tasks can be very simple but take a lot of time — for example, trying to figure out the exact colors in a competitor's color palette. Other tasks could require help from someone else — for example,  proofreading your CV or portfolio.

We asked around the Uxcel team and made a list of browser extensions that both designers and non-designers like using. These 10 tools can save your time, money, and effort, inspire you, and boost your productivity and creativity.

1. WhatFont for Chrome & Safari

WhatFont browser extension

The WhatFont extension provides a simple and elegant way of identifying fonts on a web page. Forget hunting through the code and looking for a typeface that has caught your eye. Hover the mouse on the text — and voilà! WhatFont tells you what typeface it is. You can see even more details on click: font style, weight, size, line height, and color. WhatFont has 2 significant advantages: the extension exists for both Chrome and Safari, and it can identify typefaces in any language.

2. Grammarly for Chrome & Safari

Grammarly browser extension

Smaller teams often don't have full-time copywriters or UX-writers. In cases like this, the copy can become the designers' responsibility. You might need to write UX microcopy and social media posts, not to mention emails to your team. Also, the ability to write solid copy is a massive addition to your professional skill set. With Grammarly, you can stop worrying about spelling errors or weird sentence structure. This extension acts like your personal writing assistant. It underlines pieces that need improvement and provides immediate and specific suggestions.

3. ColorZilla for Chrome

ColorZilla for Chrome

A sustainable, thoughtful color palette is the foundation of any design. ColorZilla is an extension with a range of features that are helpful when working with color. The most used function is "Pick Color From Page." It automatically determines the hex value of the color you choose and copies it to the clipboard, allowing you to paste it right away in the drawing tool. ColorZilla keeps a history of all the colors you've picked, so you won't lose track of your top selections. Moreover, the extension can generate website palettes and create gradients that you can download in CSS format.

ColorZilla doesn't work for Safari, but you can use its alternative — Color Picker. It speeds up the process of picking colors and copies their value in any format you need: NSColor, UIColor, HEX, RGB, etc.

4. Page Ruler Redux for Chrome

Page Ruler browser extension

Page Ruler Redux is a go-to tool for designers and web developers when they need precise element measurements. All you have to do is drag the mouse along the selected area to measure the distance between elements. The tool will also give you accurate height and width in pixels.

For Safari users, there's the Ruler extension with similar functionality. Ruler can also display rulers, guides, and frames over website content, allowing you to save and load guides for future reviews.

5. FireShot for Chrome

FireShot for Chrome

The FireShot extension has over 2 million users, which speaks volumes to its excellent functionality. It's a Chrome extension that allows you to:

  • Capture visible parts of web pages
  • Select and capture specific areas
  • Take screenshots of entire web pages
  • Edit and print screenshots
  • Save screenshots in various image formats, like PDF, JPEG, GIF, or PNG
  • Email a screenshot right away or copy it to the clipboard

Safari users can have a look at Awesome Screenshot, which is a similar extension. It provides decent functionality and allows you to capture, edit, and share screenshots anywhere you want.

6. Dark Reader for Safari & Chrome

Dark Reader browser extension

If you have never worked late into the night, you're in the minority of designers. Isn't dark mode the best option for the darkest time of day? There's conflicting scientific evidence, but many people believe that dark mode reduces the negative impact of blue light. The blue light emitted by electronic devices is believed to cause eye strain, dry eyes, and severe migraines. The Dark Reader extension is a pet project of software engineer and accessibility activist Alexander Shutov who often works late and wanted to create a tool to ease eye tension in the dark.

With the Dark Reader extension, you can join the "dark side" regardless of the time of day. The tool allows users to adjust brightness, contrast, and font settings to make pages more readable. Plus, dark-themed websites look astonishingly elegant. The extension is available for both Safari and Chrome users.

7. HoverSee for Safari

HoverSee browser extension

HoverSee's functionality is right in its name — when users hover the mouse over images and links, they see them larger and more clearly. The extension also provides previews of videos and websites alongside available descriptions. And, of course, it's a lifesaver for users with visual impairments.

HoverSee works great for websites with extensive image galleries and direct image links — for example, Facebook and Twitter. On Youtube, the extension automatically plays a video in its expanded mode. The tool is very easy to customize. You can adjust video delay, min and max zoom, whitelist or blacklist certain websites, autoplay or mute videos, and more.

HoverSee is available for Safari users only, but Chrome has an alternative tool — Hover Zoom+.

8. Muzli 2 for Chrome & Safari

Muzli 2 browser extension

You are probably familiar with creativity blocks. Sometimes you spend hours trying to produce something to no avail. As designers, we often look for sources of inspiration. For example, we read books, visit exhibitions, take different routes to the office or grocery store, try new hobbies, and stay up to date with the freshest design trends and news. With Muzli 2, you won't miss a thing in the design world and can always stay inspired. Once installed, it replaces your default home page. Every time you open the browser, Muzli 2 offers you a daily dose of beautiful designs, articles with helpful tips, exciting interviews, and freebies.

9. Evernote Web Clipper for Chrome & Safari

Evernote Web Clipper browser extension

The Evernote extension is a fantastic tool for those who like things to be neatly organized and sorted. If you often come across interesting articles or captivating headlines that you are too busy to read right away, Evernote has you covered. The creators of Evernote strive to reduce the number of open browser tabs, so the tool has been design to allow you to store all the interesting things that you find on the web in one place. You can also take screenshots, comment, highlight meaningful points, and share notes with your friends or colleagues.

10. Stay Focusd for Chrome

StayFocusd browser extension

The secret to getting things done is not working 12 hours a day without shifting your eyes from the computer. It's about having regular and, most importantly, refreshing breaks. Procrastinating on Facebook or any other social media website won't do any good. The Stay Focusd extension has all the power to help you to, well, stay focused! For example, you can set limits for time-consuming websites. Once you reach a limit, the extension blocks access to that content for the rest of the day. It's similar to turning parental control on for yourself. The good news is that you can fully customize it yourself, too.

This extension isn't available for Safari users, but Waste No Time is a great alternative. It has the same functionality as Stay Focusd to help users stay on track and get things done.

Dear user, This extension is not collecting any information, is not accessing any information from your browser, it's very safe. Also, it's reviewed and tested by Apple in order to enter the App Store and they do not allow apps or extensions that collects information about you. Actually, all your extensions (like Evernote, AdBlocker and so on) will have the same description there, this is the standard. So keep using the extension with confidence. If you need more details you can send me an email to [email protected] and I will gladly help you with more info.

Somewhat helpful

Gives rulers, but I'm having trouble figuring out the finesse use of them. There's no documentation that I've found so far. Wish there was more. I can make guides, but I can't drag them off the page or delete them individually. Can only remove ALL the guides by clicking a button. I see what the post that mentions sensitive info is about: Once loaded, the "Extensions" tab in Safari Preferences states, "Permissions for 'Ruler': Webpage Contents: Can read sensitive info ... including passwords, credit cards ... on all webpages." This seems alarming so I called AppleCare, who looked it up and said everything looks legit to them. (But they couldn't say why, nor could they explain the message.) I only have one other extension installed (Reload Button) and it also has the exact same message in Preferences/Extensions. I've never had a problem, added RB years ago, so I guess its ok. Seems a weird message though. Plus after all this I learned that Safari has a measuring ruler already, once you load the "Developer Tools". Advantage of this one, Ruler For Safari: It will work without having to turn on Developer Tools, it has guides, and it's a tad prettier. I just wish it had some documentation. Given all this, I'm going to keep it. But will probably leave it turned off (uncheck box in Preferences/Extensions) until I need it for a particular use.

Use Safari extensions on your Mac

Safari extensions enhance and customize the browsing experience on your Mac. Here's how to install them, uninstall them, or share them across devices.

Safari extensions add functionality to Safari, so you can explore the web the way you want. Extensions can show helpful information about a webpage, display news headlines, help you use your favorite services, change the appearance of webpages, and much more. Extensions are a great way to personalize your browsing experience.

Install extensions

Turn on extensions, turn off extensions, uninstall extensions, share extensions across devices.

Use the App Store to conveniently download and install Safari extensions. All extensions in the App Store are reviewed, signed, and hosted by Apple for your security, and they're automatically kept up to date.

Start by installing the latest macOS updates to make sure that Safari is up to date. You need Safari 12 or later to get Safari extensions from the App Store.

Open Safari and choose Safari > Safari Extensions from the menu bar.

The App Store opens to the Safari Extensions page. To download and install an extension, click Get or click the price. You might be asked to sign in with your Apple ID.

Click Install.

After the extension is installed, click Open and follow the onscreen instructions provided by the extension.

After installing an extension, follow these steps to turn it on.

Choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences).

Click Extensions.

Select the checkbox next to the extension's name. Learn what to do if you can't turn on extensions .

If you're browsing privately, or using a profile or web app

When browsing in a private window in macOS Sonoma or later, all extensions that require website access are turned off by default. To use an extension when browsing privately:

Choose Safari > Settings.

Select the extension in the sidebar, then select “Allow in Private Browsing” on the right.

Whether or not you're browsing privately, you can also restrict the extension's access to certain websites. Click the Edit Websites button to view the extension in Websites settings. From there you can allow access, deny access, or require that websites ask you for access.

When using Safari profiles , extensions for the default profile are managed in the main Extensions tab of Safari settings. Extensions for other profiles are managed in the Profiles tab, which has its own Extensions tab for each profile. By default, extensions are turned off for each new profile.

Share button

Choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences), then click Extensions.

To turn off an extension, deselect its checkbox.

If you can't determine what an extension does, or you don't expect to use it again, you should uninstall it.

To uninstall an extension, select the extension and click the Uninstall button.

Starting with macOS Ventura, iOS 16, and iPadOS 16, you can share extensions across your Mac, iPhone, and iPad:

On your Mac, open Safari and choose Safari > Settings, then click Extensions. Select “Share across devices” at the bottom of the window.

On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Safari > Extensions, then turn on Share Across Devices.

No alt supplied for Image

To uninstall an extension from all devices, you must uninstall it on each device.

Safari no longer supports most web plug-ins. To load webpages more quickly, save energy, and strengthen security, Safari is optimized for content that uses the HTML5 web standard, which doesn't require a plug-in. To enhance and customize your browsing experience, use Safari extensions instead of web plug-ins.

ruler extension safari

Are you tired of searching for a physical ruler every time you need to measure something on your computer screen? The good news is that there are many ways to display a ruler on your computer screen, and in this article, we will explore some of the most popular methods.

1. Use a Web-based Ruler

One of the easiest ways to display a ruler on your computer screen is to use a web-based ruler. There are many websites available that offer free online rulers that you can use to measure anything on your screen. All you need to do is search for “online ruler” or “virtual ruler” in your favorite search engine, and you will find several options to choose from. Once you find a website that offers a ruler, simply follow the instructions to use it.

2. Install a Ruler Extension

Another option is to install a ruler extension on your web browser. There are many extensions available for popular browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. These extensions will add a ruler or tape measure to your browser, allowing you to measure anything on your screen. Some of the most popular ruler extensions include “MeasureIt!” for Firefox and “Screen Ruler” for Chrome.

3. Use Your Computer’s Built-in Ruler

Most modern operating systems come with a built-in ruler tool that you can use to measure things on your screen. On Windows, you can find the ruler tool by searching for “ruler” in the start menu. On a Mac, you can access the ruler tool by launching the “Preview” app and selecting “Show Ruler” from the “View” menu. The advantage of using your computer’s built-in ruler is that it doesn’t require you to install any additional software.

4. Use a Third-party Ruler Software

If you need more advanced features than what a web-based ruler, browser extension, or your computer’s built-in ruler can offer, you might want to consider using third-party ruler software. There are many paid and free ruler software options available online that you can use to measure and mark anything on your screen. Some of the popular ruler software includes “Pixel Ruler” for Windows, “xScope” for Mac, and “JRuler” for both Windows and Mac.

In conclusion, displaying a ruler on your computer screen is essential for anyone who works with digital graphics, web design, or just simply needs to measure something on their screen. Fortunately, there are many ways to display a ruler on your computer screen, and it’s up to you to choose the method that works best for your needs. Whether you use a web-based ruler, browser extension, built-in ruler, or third-party software, having a ruler on your computer will save you time and help you work more efficiently.

5 Ways to Display a Ruler on Your Computer Screen

Need to measure something in a pinch? Here are the best screen rulers for your computer, Android, and iPhone devices.

You might think of a ruler as something only kids in school or carpenters use. But occasionally, everyone has a need for an old-fashioned ruler. If you don't have a real ruler handy, why not use a computer ruler?

While they won't help you draw a straight line, you can use these on-screen rulers to make small measurements. Let's look at some useful options you can use on your desktop and phone.

A Quick Note on Using Computer Screen Rulers

Though these sites are simple, the rulers will look different depending on your device's screen size and resolution. They attempt to calibrate themselves automatically, but this won't always work out right.

Thus, while screen rulers are convenient when you have no other options, there's no guarantee that they're perfectly accurate. We therefore don't recommend using these tools for any kind of precision jobs. Use a real measuring tool that you trust for more serious work.

You may wish to double-check these rulers for accuracy before you use them. It's easy to do this using a common object with a standard measurement, like a dollar bill. A US bill is 2.61 inches tall, which you can use to test the ruler.

iRuler is a classic PC ruler site that's still around today. Visiting the site grants you access to a simple ruler right on your screen. It displays both inches and centimeters.

The site automatically detects your monitor size and resolution in order to display the ruler at the right dimensions. If it doesn't get it right, click the select your monitor dimension text to fix this.

That's all there is to using this easy tool, as it doesn't offer much in the way of extras.

2. PiliApp Actual Ruler

This alternative monitor ruler offers a few additional tools compared to iRuler.

When you first visit the page, it will ask you to confirm your detected monitor size. If it's not correct, you can pick a different option or specify your own value. It also lets you choose I don't know what monitor size is for a calibration tool.

With this, you can match up the size of a dollar bill, credit card, or iPhone with one on the screen to figure out your monitor size.

Once you're done, you'll have another ruler to utilize. This site has the centimeter and inch rulers on different pages, which makes it a little cleaner. You can also click the drag it button to put the ruler image in its own window and move it wherever you like on the screen.

3. FreeOnlineRuler

You might think that all rulers on your computer would be the same, but this one offers a few features that the above don't.

First, you can click and drag to move the ruler around wherever you want it. This site also lets you hold Ctrl and drag the ruler to rotate it, which is handy if you want to measure an irregular object.

At the bottom of the page, you can uncheck centimeters or inches if you only want to show one of them. And the flipped option reverses the ruler, so you can measure from right to left.

FreeOnlineRuler also has a calibration tool. Click Please calibrate your ruler (or Calibrate if you've opened this before) at the bottom of the screen to open it. Here you can pick to measure a credit card, dollar bill, or sheet of paper to calibrate the ruler.

If you don't have any of these, the site also helpfully lets you specify your own object measurement for calibration.

4. Ruler by Xalpha Lab

The above tools are great for desktop use, but they don't work too well on a mobile device. If you need a ruler on your phone, perhaps to visualize one inch on the screen, then you should use a dedicated app.

For Android, we like the aptly titled Ruler. It's a highly rated app that lets you make small measurements on your phone. Drag the height and width lines to display the dimensions of the object you're measuring.

Tap anywhere on the screen to open the menu at the top. Here you can swap to the dark theme, change units, adjust the subdivisions, or calibrate it using a coin or credit card.

Of course, since your phone's display isn't as large as a computer monitor, you can't measure objects as long. But as a quick electronic ruler, it's handy to have. Even better, the app features no ads or in-app purchases.

If you need to measure larger objects, you should check out Google's Measure app, which is one of the best toolbox apps on Android .

Download: Ruler for Android (Free)

5. Ruler by Tue Nguyen Minh

If you use an iPhone, you'll find plenty of ruler apps available as well. This one goes by 3-in-1 Ruler, and offers a basic ruler as well as an AR measuring tool and option to print a ruler. Like the above, it has no ads or in-app purchases.

When you start the app, it will ask you for access to your camera. It needs this for the AR measuring feature, which uses your camera to measure the dimensions of actual objects. Pull down from the top to access the standard ruler, which measures up to roughly four inches/10 centimeters.

Modern iPhones also include a first-party Apple app called Measure , which allows you to measure objects using AR. Give that a try if you need to measure something larger than a few inches.

We've looked at the best ruler and distance measurements tools for iPhone before, so check those out for more options.

Which Computer Ruler Will You Use?

We've looked at solid monitor ruler options for your desktop as well as your iPhone or Android phone. Whether you just need a quick visualization of a centimeter or need to measure something in a pinch, these will help you out. Just remember that they're not perfectly accurate.

It's just a one-stop solution if I want to customize my page. With very good UI design ”
I've been meaning to write this review for a while now. My daughter is newly diagnosed with dysexia and I heard an interview with Robert on a Newstalk podcast and sought it out. I wasn't sure if I had it installed correctly on her laptop and Robert was on straight away to help. He was amazing. This app has changed everything for my daughter. Everything is accessible to her and everyday tasks and schoolwork are so much easier. She also has visual stress so the coloured overlay feature is a game changer for her. I would highly recommend this app to anyone, she couldn't be without it now!”
Love this extension works beautifully overall. ”
I have been trying to find ways to make my child happy to go to school again, and someone recommended helperbird. She loves helperbird, and she is now much happier about the idea of returning to school. I think this might be a game changer, as they do so much web based schoolwork and research. She says they really understand people with dyslexia”

I like it. Would be nice if you could draw more than 1 box at a time, and a history feature would be nice.

I noticed some tracking code being applied. I'm not overly excited that a simple tool is tracking what I am doing.
