Airplay not working with Safari

Recently, I noticed that Airplay from my phone to the appleTV was not working. I just had some time to troubleshoot, and here is what I found. All devices mentioned are running the latest software and all routers/access points have been rebooted.

Initial attempts were from my iPhone to 2 different AppleTVs and a Sony tv. I then tried from my iPhone to a friends Sony tv. Also tried their iPhone to their Sony tv. Each of these attempts was using a Safari webpage to attempt streaming video and all were unsuccessful.

I then tried an iPad using safari on all the above devices and it still failed.

Finally, I tried my iPhone, friends iPhone, and the iPad on all the above devices but using other apps besides Safari. All of them worked seamlessly. It appears to be an issue with Safari. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Both AppleTVs are connected directly to routers. Both Sony TVs are Airplay compatible. There is no error message being shown. Each iPhone/iPad “thinks” it is air playing to the tv or AppleTV because the iOS interface indicates as such, but it’s not working. If I’m in the home menu of the AppleTV when I attempt to AirPlay, the screen will go dark, then immediately back to the home screen. Again, this is ONLY when using Safari from either an iPhone or an iPad. Using airplay from another app (Netflix, TV, YTTV, etc) everything works from each device to each device mentioned.

I just attempted to AirPlay from my MacBook Pro using Safari and other apps, and everything worked correctly.

The problem appears to be with Safari from mobile devices.

Welcome JVBAMA40,

We understand that you're unable to screen mirror your devices when trying to play a video in Safari. Great job isolating the issue. To clarify, do you receive an error message? Having this information will allow us to get better understanding of the issue

Try connecting one of your Apple TVs directly to the router with an Ethernet cable instead of using Wi-Fi to see if that helps. Also, be sure your friend's Sony TV is compatible with AirPlay. Here's how to check: Home-AirPlay 2–Enabled TVs and Devices

For the best performance, check out these suggestions : Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points

We look forward to hearing back from you. Cheers!

How to use airplay (screen mirroring) on a mac.

Cut the cords and make a big-screen wireless scene with AirPlay.

Quick Links

What is airplay, you'll need an airplay-compatible receiving device, share your screen on macos 11 big sur and later, share your screen on macos 10.15 catalina and earlier.

Thanks to AirPlay , you can wirelessly extend or mirror your Mac's screen to an external display such as an Apple TV, certain smart TVs, or other devices running AirPlay receiver software. Here's how to use it.

AirPlay is Apple's name for the company's proprietary wireless media streaming protocol. AirPlay lets Apple devices such as Macs, iPhones, and iPads stream audio and video over a local network to an AirPlay-compatible receiver device without the need for audio or video cables. It's similar to how  Miracast and Chromecast  work on Windows and Android devices.

One of the most useful features of AirPlay is that you can use it to share (project) your Mac's screen onto another display device. That's what we're going to explore in this article.

Related: AirPlay vs. Chromecast: What's the Difference?

Before we begin, we're going to assume that you already have at least one AirPlay-compatible receiver device connected to the same local network as your Mac. Compatible devices include Apple TV , certain brands of smart TV sets , and other devices running AirPlay receiver software .

Related: How to Screen Mirror on Roku

To share your screen using AirPlay on a Mac running macOS 11 Big Sur or later, first, click the Control Center icon located in the upper-right corner of your screen (in the menu bar). It looks like two tiny toggle switches.

When Control Center appears, click "Screen Mirroring."

Next, you'll see a list of AirPlay-compatible devices that your Mac has discovered on your network. Click one of them to begin mirroring.

(It's worth noting that you will see different AirPlay receiver names than those listed in our example. We're using an Amazon Fire TV running third-party AirPlay receiver software.)

While you're connected and actively sharing your screen, the Screen Mirroring icon in the menu bar will turn blue (It looks like one rectangle overlapping another.).

At any time, click the Screen Mirroring icon to view the status of the connection or to switch from mirroring to "Use As Separate Display" mode, which will treat the AirPlay display as if it were a second monitor hooked to your Mac.

To disconnect and stop sharing your screen, click the Screen Mirroring icon (or click "Screen Mirroring" in Control Center) and click the receiving device name whose icon is highlighted in blue.

After that, you'll stop screen-sharing. You can also control screen-sharing in System Preferences using the Displays > AirPlay Display menu.

Related: How the New Control Center in macOS Big Sur Works

If you want to mirror your Mac's screen with an AirPlay-compatible device (such as an Apple TV ) and you're running macOS 10.15 Catalina or earlier, you'll need to do things slightly differently than you would with macOS 11.

First, look for the AirPlay icon (which looks like a rectangle with a small triangle over it) in the menu bar at the top of your screen.

If you don't see the AirPlay icon in your menu bar, navigate to System Preferences > Displays and place a check mark beside "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available."

Next, close System Preferences and click the AirPlay icon in your menu bar. Select the device that you'd like to screen-share with from the menu that appears.

If the device that you want to project to isn't listed, make sure that both your Mac and the receiving device are connected to the same Wi-Fi access point or local area network.

Once you're connected, the AirPlay icon in your menu bar will turn blue. Click the AirPlay icon to check the status of the AirPlay connection. You can also change the screen-sharing mode from mirroring to "Use As Separate Display," which will use the AirPlay display like a second monitor.

To disconnect, select "Stop AirPlay."

Whenever you need to mirror your display again, AirPlay will be only a click away in your menu bar. Have fun!

How to surf the web on Apple TV

Karen Haslam

For reasons best known to Apple, there is no web browser available on the Apple TV. Despite the fact that the Apple TV runs a version of iOS there is not a version of Safari designed for Apple TV and there is no substitute web browser available in the TV App Store.

But before you drown in disappointment, there are a few ways in which you can surf the web on your Apple TV. Read on to find out how.

We’ll look at three ways in which you can access your favourite websites on your TV screen, including popular TV Catchup channels, FaceBook, Google’s search engine and more. Read about how to watch OnDemand TV channels on Apple TV here .

Method 1: Surf the web on your Apple TV using AirPlay

This is the easiest way to surf the web on the Apple TV. It’s ideal if you want to share the surfing experience with friends and family who are in the room with you, or if what you are looking at on the web would benefit from a bigger screen.

Using Apple’s AirPlay you can stream the screen of your iPhone or your Mac to your TV screen.

Pros: You can see everything that you see on your iPhone or Mac on the TV screen.

Cons: You might as well be looking at your iPhone or Mac screen, and when it comes to scrolling and typing you will be. You won’t be able to use your iPhone for anything else while you are mirroring it’s screen on the TV.

How to view your iPhone screen on your TV

  • Swipe up from the bottom of your iPhone to view Control Centre.
  • Tap on Screen Mirroring
Choose your Apple TV.
  • You may be required to enter an AirPlay code for the Apple TV you are connecting too. This code will appear on the TV Screen attached to the Apple TV.
  • Navigate to Safari on your iPhone and surf the web.
  • If you rotate our iPhone into landscape you should be able to view the web using the full screen of your TV (some apps, like Facebook won’t rotate).

safari on airplay

How to view the screen of your Mac on your TV

  • Click on the AirPlay icon from the menu bar at the top of the screen (a triangle pointing into a box)
  • Choose your Apple TV from the options
  • Your Mac display may alter so that it is optimised for the Apple TV (this made everything smaller on our MacBook screen) .
  • There are a few different ways you can set up AirPlay on your Mac and TV screen. You could mirror the Mac screen on the TV, in which case you will see everything on your Mac duplicated over on the TV.
  • However, if you want to surf on your TV screen, while leaving your Mac free to do something else, you can change the arrangement of your screens – this would be ideal if you wanted to stream video to your TV while typing into a Pages document on your Mac at the same time.
  • Open System Preferences > Display and click on Arrangement

safari on airplay

  • Now based on how you arrange the screens you can drag your Safari (or other browser) window over to the Apple TV screen. To figure our which display is which in the illustration under the Arrangement tab click on the screen and you will see a red outline on the one that represents the Apple TV. Drag in that direction and the browser will appear on your TV screen.
  • You can now use your mouse, or trackpad to scroll around the browser on your TV screen.
  • We find it preferable to use a separate keyboard and mouse because they feel less connected to your Mac and therefore you feel more like you are surfing the web on the TV. Even better if you have a wireless mouse and keyboard. One reason why this feels more natural is that you don’t need to look at your Mac at all while surfing.
  • Remember that you won’t be able to continue using your Mac while someone else surfs the web on the TV screen (or rather you can, but there will be a battle over the mouse and keyboard). It’s the perfect set up for showing video on the TV screen – perhaps something on All4 or another Catch Up TV channel – while using your Mac for something else.

Read more about using AirPlay to stream from your Mac to TV here .

Method 2 – Surf the web using AirBrowser on your iPhone

One issue with surfing the web on your TV screen via your iPhone and AirPlay is the fact that you have to scroll and swipe around on your iPhone so you might as well be doing your surfing on that device rather than the TV. As we said earlier, it’s ideal if you want other people in the room to see what you are looking at, but otherwise, we’re not sure what you really gain.

Here’s where AirBrowser comes in.

Pros: AirBrowser puts a web browser on your TV screen while reserving the iPhone for controls and a keypad. You get a full desktop view of the web pages.

Cons: Not all elements of web pages worked in AirBrowser. Some forms were difficult to fill in if they used multiple choice. It costs £5.

AirBrowser places controls for browsing the web on your iPhone – so you can swipe around the page, or type using the iPhone keyboard, but the actual web page appears on the TV screen.

  • Download AirBrowser from the App Store on your iPhone (it costs £4.99)
  • Open the AirBrowser app.
  • You will be asked to Connect Second Screen, the animation shows you how, except the animation shows how it worked in iOS 10, rather than iOS 11.
  • Swipe up on Control Panel and choose Screen Mirroring.
  • Choose your Apple TV.
  • Now you should see a browser on the TV screen and a url bar on the iPhone. Tap on the URL bar and enter the name of the site you wish to visit, or a search phrase.
  • On the TV screen you will either see the website you wished to visit or the results of your Google search.
  • To scroll down the page swipe upwards with two fingers.
  • To click on a link use one finger to track to the link and tap.
  • To go back to the previous page tap on the back arrow at the top of the iPhone interface.
  • To view all the tabs you have open tap on the central icon that shows 9 dots.
  • You can view the site as it would appear on desktop or mobile by swiping between the two options at the bottom of the page.

safari on airplay

We did encounter a few difficulties using AirBrowser. For example when it came to signing in to use services sometimes we weren’t able to because where a site used a multiple choice selection tool for, say, your date of birth or title, it wasn’t possible to select an option.

At other times we found that we couldn’t play video because it was in Flash. The browser seems to fool the site into thinking it’s a Mac, but of course your TV and your iPhone can’t download Flash so you can’t view the content.

safari on airplay

Another issue we had was when viewing iTV player. We were able to get it to play the content but we weren’t able to select full screen view in order for the video player to fill the TV screen. Instead we were able to increase page size by zooming in (pinch to zoom). We had more success with iTV player than any of the other TV services. On my5 we got a video playback errors.

Read more about watching OnDemand TV on your Apple TV here .

Method 3 – Using tvOSBrowser to surf the web on your Apple TV

This one is a little more complicated to set up, but essentially gives you a web browser on your Apple TV. You’ll need an Apple Developer account (which is free), Xcode and a USB-C cable or an adapter. If that doesn’t sound like you it probably won’t be worth you reading any further.

Pros: This is the closest you will get to an web browser app for the Apple TV.

Cons: It’s not easy to install and probably isn’t worth the effort.

Of course if you like tinkering with things like this, then go ahead. This would probably interest you too: How to jailbreak an Apple TV.

  • We’ll assume you have a developer account. If not you need to set one up here developer.apple.com/account.
  • Download Xcode from the Mac App Store.
  • Get a USB-A to USB-C cable.
  • Download the source code to tvOSBrowser using Xcode (you can get it from here https://github.com/steventroughtonsmith/tvOSBrowser)
  • This is where it all gets a little complicated. You have to remove some code in order to get the tvOSBrowser to work. We suggest you read this tutorial here .

how-to-get-subtitles-on-airplay

Introduction

Airplay is a wireless streaming technology developed by Apple that allows users to stream audio, video, and photos wirelessly from their Apple devices, such as iPhones, iPads, and Macs, to compatible devices like Apple TVs and speakers. It offers seamless multimedia streaming and is widely used for entertainment purposes.

While Airplay provides a convenient way to enjoy your favorite media content on a larger screen or better speakers, it may not always support subtitles by default. Subtitles are essential for various reasons – they assist those with hearing impairments, allow viewers to follow along with foreign language content, and improve accessibility for a wider audience.

In this article, we will explore different methods to get subtitles on Airplay. Whether you’re watching a movie or streaming a TV show, these methods will help you ensure that you don’t miss out on any dialogue or important information.

So, if you’re ready to enhance your Airplay experience with subtitles, let’s dive into the methods.

What is Airplay?

Airplay is a proprietary wireless streaming technology developed by Apple Inc. It allows users to wirelessly stream media content, including audio, video, and photos, from their Apple devices to compatible devices such as Apple TVs, speakers, and receivers. This technology enables seamless and convenient playback of multimedia content across different devices within the Apple ecosystem.

The Airplay technology uses a combination of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to connect devices and transmit audio and video data. With Airplay, you can mirror your entire screen or specific apps on your Apple device to a larger display, enhancing the viewing experience for movies, TV shows, presentations, and more. It also allows you to stream music to speakers, creating a wireless audio playback system throughout your home.

Airplay offers several benefits for users. It provides high-quality streaming of audio and video content, ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted playback experience. It also supports multi-room audio functionality, allowing you to play music simultaneously on multiple speakers or devices. Additionally, Airplay supports stereo pairing, enabling you to connect two speakers for a more immersive audio experience.

To use Airplay, both the transmitting device (such as an iPhone or iPad) and the receiving device (such as an Apple TV or Airplay-compatible speaker) need to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Once connected, you can easily select the Airplay option on your Apple device, choose the desired receiving device, and start streaming your media content wirelessly.

Airplay is compatible with various Apple devices, including iPhones, iPads, iPods, Macs, and Apple TVs. It offers a seamless integration between these devices, allowing you to effortlessly stream and control media playback across different devices. Whether you want to enjoy videos on a big screen or listen to music with enhanced audio quality, Airplay provides a convenient and user-friendly solution.

In the next sections, we will explore different methods to enable subtitles on Airplay, ensuring that you can enjoy your favorite content with accurate and synchronized subtitles.

Why do you need subtitles on Airplay?

Subtitles play a crucial role in enhancing the overall viewing experience, especially when it comes to streaming media content on Airplay. Here are some reasons why subtitles are essential:

  • Accessibility: Subtitles ensure that everyone, including individuals with hearing impairments, can fully enjoy the content. It provides a means for them to follow along with the dialogue, captions, and sound effects, making the media more inclusive and accessible.
  • Language comprehension: Subtitles are particularly useful when watching movies or TV shows in a foreign language. They help viewers understand the dialogue and improve their comprehension. This is especially important when dealing with complex or fast-paced conversations.
  • Better understanding: Subtitles can aid in clarifying dialogue that may be muffled, spoken quickly, or in a heavy accent. They ensure that viewers catch every word and fully grasp the intended meaning of the content.
  • Noisy environments: Watching media content in noisy environments, such as crowded places or with the background noise of daily activities, can make it difficult to hear the dialogue clearly. Subtitles help to overcome this challenge by providing a visual representation of the spoken words.
  • Content accuracy: Subtitles can be useful for ensuring the accuracy of content, particularly when dealing with technical jargon, unfamiliar terms, or dialects. They help in avoiding any misinterpretation or confusion by providing clear and precise information.
  • Multi-language support: Subtitles allow for the translation of content from one language to another, which enables viewers from different language backgrounds to enjoy the same media. It helps in bridging the language barrier and opens up opportunities for cultural exchange and understanding.

Whether you have specific accessibility needs, are learning a new language, or simply want to enhance your overall comprehension and enjoyment of media content, having subtitles on Airplay is essential.

Now that we understand the importance of subtitles, we can explore different methods to enable subtitles while streaming media on Airplay. These methods will help you unlock the full potential of your Airplay experience and ensure that you don’t miss out on any crucial details or dialogue.

Method 1: Using media players that support subtitles

One of the simplest ways to get subtitles on Airplay is by using media players that support subtitle files. Many media players, such as VLC Media Player, Infuse, or Plex, have built-in subtitle support and can be used to stream content with subtitles to Airplay-compatible devices. Here’s how you can use this method:

  • First, make sure you have a media player installed on your Apple device that supports subtitles. Some popular options include VLC Media Player, Infuse, or Plex. You can find these media players on the App Store.
  • Next, transfer the media file along with its corresponding subtitle file to your device. The subtitle file should have the same file name as the media file and be in a supported subtitle format, such as SRT, SUB, or VTT.
  • Open the media player app and navigate to the location where the media file and subtitle file are stored.
  • Select the media file you want to play and make sure the subtitle file is selected as well. The media player should automatically detect and load the subtitle file.
  • Once the media file is playing with the subtitles, connect your Apple device to the Airplay-compatible device, such as Apple TV or a compatible speaker, by swiping up from the bottom of the screen and selecting the Airplay option.
  • Choose the desired Airplay device from the list, and the media playback, along with the subtitles, will be streamed to the Airplay device.

Using media players with built-in subtitle support offers a seamless solution for streaming media with subtitles on Airplay. It ensures that the subtitles are synchronized with the media playback and can be customized according to your preferences, such as font size, color, and position.

Note that the availability and features of subtitle support may vary depending on the media player app. Some media players may require additional settings or configurations to enable the subtitle functionality. Therefore, it’s essential to explore the settings of your chosen media player to ensure that subtitles are enabled and configured correctly for Airplay streaming.

Now that you know how to utilize media players that support subtitles on Airplay, you can enjoy your favorite movies and TV shows with accurate and synchronized subtitles.

Method 2: Using subtitle apps

If your media player does not support subtitles or you’re looking for more advanced subtitle options, using subtitle apps can be a great alternative. Subtitle apps provide more flexibility and control over subtitles, allowing you to easily add, sync, and adjust subtitles while streaming content on Airplay. Here’s how you can use this method:

  • Start by downloading a subtitle app from the App Store that is compatible with your Apple device. Some popular subtitle apps include Subtitles Viewer, Subtitle Edit, or Subtitle Studio.
  • Once you have installed the subtitle app, transfer the media file you want to watch and its corresponding subtitle file to your device. Make sure the subtitle file has the same file name as the media file and is in a supported subtitle format, such as SRT or SUB.
  • Open the subtitle app and navigate to the location where the media file and subtitle file are stored.
  • Select the media file you want to play within the subtitle app. The app should automatically detect and display the available subtitle files.
  • Choose the desired subtitle file and adjust any settings or preferences, such as subtitle synchronization, font size, or style.
  • Once the settings are configured, connect your Apple device to the Airplay-compatible device, such as Apple TV or a compatible speaker, by accessing the Control Center or the Airplay option.
  • Select the desired Airplay device from the list, and both the media playback and synchronized subtitles will be streamed to the Airplay device.

Using subtitle apps gives you more control and flexibility over subtitles, allowing you to customize their appearance and synchronization. Some subtitle apps also offer additional features like automatic subtitle downloads, subtitle searching, or real-time translation for an enhanced viewing experience.

It’s essential to ensure that the subtitle app you choose supports Airplay streaming and is compatible with your Apple device. Additionally, check the subtitle formats supported by the app to ensure that your subtitle file is compatible.

By utilizing subtitle apps, you can have a seamless experience of streaming media with synchronized subtitles on Airplay, opening up a whole new world of accessibility and enjoyment.

Method 3: Converting subtitles to a compatible format

If you have subtitle files that are not in a compatible format for Airplay, you can convert them to a supported format using various subtitle conversion tools available online. Converting subtitles to a compatible format ensures that they can be seamlessly displayed while streaming media content on Airplay. Here’s how you can use this method:

  • Start by identifying the subtitle file format that you have and verifying the supported subtitle formats for Airplay. Common subtitle formats that Airplay supports include SRT, SUB, or VTT.
  • Search for a reliable online subtitle converter tool that allows you to convert subtitle files to a compatible format. Some popular options include Subtitle Converter, Convertio, or NASC.
  • Upload your subtitle file to the conversion tool. Make sure to choose the desired output format that is supported by Airplay.
  • Initiate the conversion process, and the online tool will convert your subtitle file to the selected format.
  • Once the conversion is complete, download the converted subtitle file to your device.
  • Add the converted subtitle file to the same folder as the media file you want to watch on Airplay.
  • Connect your Apple device to the Airplay-compatible device, such as Apple TV or a compatible speaker.
  • Start playing the media file, and the Airplay streaming should include the converted subtitle file, displaying the subtitles as you watch.

Converting subtitles to a compatible format allows you to ensure that they are properly recognized and displayed during Airplay streaming. It is important to note that the conversion process may vary depending on the chosen online tool, so it’s recommended to follow the specific instructions provided by the converter platform.

By converting your subtitle files to a compatible format, you can enjoy streaming media content with accurate and synchronized subtitles on Airplay, enhancing your viewing experience and ensuring that you don’t miss out on any crucial details or dialogue.

Method 4: Adjusting Airplay settings on Apple devices

If you’re unable to get subtitles on Airplay using the previous methods, you can try adjusting the Airplay settings on your Apple device. Sometimes, subtitles may not appear due to certain settings or configurations. By making the necessary adjustments, you can ensure that subtitles are enabled and displayed while streaming content on Airplay. Here’s how you can use this method:

  • On your Apple device, navigate to the Settings app.
  • Scroll down and tap on “Airplay & Handoff”.
  • Ensure that the Airplay feature is enabled by toggling the switch to the “On” position.
  • Under the Airplay settings, check if the “Subtitles” option is available. If it’s present, make sure it is set to “On” or “Automatic”.
  • If the “Subtitles” option is not available, navigate to the Accessibility settings by going back to the main Settings menu and selecting “Accessibility”.
  • In the Accessibility settings, tap on “Subtitles & Captioning”.
  • Toggle the switch for “Closed Captions + SDH” to the “On” position.
  • Adjust any additional subtitle settings according to your preference, such as font size or style.
  • Start playing the media file, and Airplay streaming should include the subtitles, displaying them as you watch.

Adjusting the Airplay settings on your Apple device ensures that subtitles are enabled and ready to be displayed while streaming media content. It’s important to note that the availability of subtitle settings may vary depending on the device model and operating system version. Thus, it’s recommended to explore the specific Airplay and Accessibility settings on your Apple device to ensure that subtitles are configured correctly for Airplay streaming.

By adjusting the Airplay settings on your Apple device, you can ensure that subtitles are displayed while streaming media content on Airplay, providing you with an enhanced viewing experience and making it easier to follow along with the dialogue and captions.

Getting subtitles on Airplay can greatly enhance your viewing experience by ensuring that you don’t miss out on any dialogue or crucial information. Whether you’re watching movies, TV shows, or any other media content, having accurate and synchronized subtitles can improve accessibility and make the content more enjoyable for a wider audience.

In this article, we explored four different methods to get subtitles on Airplay. By using media players that support subtitles, utilizing subtitle apps, converting subtitles to a compatible format, or adjusting the Airplay settings on your Apple device, you can easily enable subtitles while streaming media on Airplay-compatible devices such as Apple TVs or speakers.

Each method offers its own advantages and flexibility. Using media players with built-in subtitle support provides a seamless solution, while subtitle apps offer more control and advanced options. Converting subtitles to a compatible format ensures compatibility with Airplay, and adjusting the Airplay settings on your Apple device can resolve any configuration issues that may prevent subtitles from appearing.

Remember to choose the method that suits your needs and preferences, depending on the media player you prefer, the availability of subtitle apps, the subtitle formats you have, and the specific settings on your Apple device.

With subtitles enabled on Airplay, you can enjoy a more inclusive and immersive multimedia streaming experience. Whether you’re watching movies in a foreign language, accessing content in noisy environments, or simply enhancing accessibility for individuals with hearing impairments, subtitles on Airplay provide a valuable solution.

So, next time you use Airplay to stream media content on your Apple devices, ensure that subtitles are enabled using one of the methods mentioned in this article. By doing so, you’ll unlock the full potential of your Airplay experience and enjoy your favorite content with accurate and synchronized subtitles.

After some delay, Apple is finally bringing AirPlay to hotel room TVs — but you can only use it if you’re staying in one of the “more than” 60 IHG hotels it’s available in starting today.

Apple first announced the ability to use AirPlay in hotels with LG TVs during its Worldwide Developer Conference in 2023. The feature lets you stream shows, movies, and music from your phone to your hotel TV, as well as view photos or play games from a bigger screen.

Although Apple previously said AirPlay in hotels would arrive by the end of 2023, it ended up pushing back its launch until this year. The feature finally popped up with the release of iOS 17.3 earlier this year.

For now, AirPlay is currently only supported in select IHG hotels — such as the Holiday Inn, Candlewood Suites, and Avid Hotels — in the US, Canada, and Mexico. Apple says it will add more locations “in the coming months.” If you’re wondering whether you’ll get to use AirPlay during your next vacation, you can check out the full list of supported hotels from IHG’s website .

iPhone's New AirPlay Feature for Hotel Room TVs Begins Rolling Out

Apple has announced that iPhone and iPad users can wirelessly stream videos, music, and photos from their device to their hotel room TV via AirPlay at select IHG Hotels & Resorts properties in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico starting today, including select Holiday Inn, Kimpton, Hotel Indigo, Candlewood Suites, Staybridge Suites, Atwell Suites, InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, and Avid locations, and some others.

IHG Hotel AirPlay

The feature allows you to scan a unique QR code on the hotel room TV to establish an AirPlay connection, allowing you to wirelessly stream content from your iPhone or iPad to the TV. After the pairing process, your device will also automatically be connected to the hotel's Wi-Fi network. The device must be updated to iOS 17.3 or iPadOS 17.3 or later.

airplay hotels

Apple emphasized the privacy and security of the AirPlay feature. When a guest checks out of the hotel, the company says their connection to the TV is erased, preventing future guests and hotel staff from accessing the user's activity.

Apple first announced this feature at WWDC 2023 last June, in partnership with LG. Google already offers a similar Chromecast streaming feature on many hotel TVs that works with both iPhones and Android devices, so Apple has a lot of catching up to do on this front, but AirPlay support is certainly a useful addition for iPhone users.

Starting today, guests staying at select properties from IHG Hotels & Resorts, including Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, Hotel Indigo, Candlewood Suites, and InterContinental Hotels & Resorts, can use AirPlay to privately and securely stream their favorite shows and movies on Apple TV+ and other popular streaming services, listen to personal playlists on Apple Music or other platforms, view vacation photos, practice a presentation, play fun games on Apple Arcade, or get a workout or meditation in with Apple Fitness+ on the big screen in their guest rooms. More than 60 IHG properties in North America are introducing AirPlay today, with others to be added in the coming months.

Simple and Private Content Sharing on the Big Screen Users can automatically connect to the compatible LG hotel TV in their guest room and the hotel’s Wi-Fi network by scanning a unique QR code on the screen. Once connected, guests can share almost anything on the big screen in their hotel room directly from their iPhone or iPad. Guests can also pair multiple devices to the TV, so friends and loved ones traveling together can also enjoy.

Each QR code is unique to the hotel room and ensures that content is available only to the user — meaning anything guests share to the hotel TV stays personal and private. When they check out, their connection to the TV is erased, so future guests and hotel staff can’t access the user’s activity.

NFL Draft

Zak from Huntington Beach, CA

I was in the midst of drafting an Inbox submission about the NFL Draft when a sudden draft began to stir the papers on my desk. I arose to close the window, and that momentary distraction caused me to forget my query, so now I need a cold draft brew in which to drown my sorrows.

Is it Thursday yet?

Bob from Dundas, MN

Wes's quote from the MTV Diary docuseries, "You think you know…but you have no idea," reminded me of a story my dad told me about when Vince Lombardi came down to Manitowoc to speak at the Elks Club back in the '60s. In response to a critical question about the team from an audience member, Lombardi simply looked at him and said, "Mister, you don't know."

Vince would've given up on Insider Inbox before finishing his first column.

Bil from Stateline, NV

I truly don't care which direction the ball spins in Brazil, as long as the game doesn't go down the toilet.

As soon as the draft is over, this Brazil game can't come and go soon enough.

Sean from Palatine, IL

Good morning Inbox and happy draft week! I just learned about what might be the biggest butterfly effect in NFL Draft history. In 2001 the Chargers traded the rights to Michael Vick for the fifth pick (LT) and drafted Brees in the second round instead. A few years later, they let him walk and pull off the Rivers/Eli swap with the Giants. One draft day decision leads to four different teams ending up with their best QB in franchise history.

Fascinating, but hold on a minute. The kid in me can't rank Rivers as the best QB in Chargers history over Fouts. Sorry.

Mark from Westminster, CO

John from Ashland mentioned he thinks Sean Clifford is a hidden gem and solid QB. It got me to thinking about Jordan Love and last season. At what point (game) do you think the rest of the league started really taking notice of what he was able to do?

Thanksgiving Day.

Gary from Sheboygan, WI

Good morning II. Do teams pay draft prospects to come to their facilities for tryouts and does the league or network pay the prospects to come to the draft show?

Teams pay the travel expenses for pre-draft visits, but those aren't "tryouts." Those players don't do workouts when they visit. Prospects also aren't paid to attend the draft, but with only 13 showing up in Detroit this year, that might become a topic of discussion next year.

Bill from Clive, IA

Haven't seen your Prospect Primer yet on Cooper DeJean, but I know it's coming! One question that I have for you is this: Do you see him as versatile enough to potentially make the switch to safety, and fit into that "underneath" role in the single-high package, with Xavier patrolling the back end? Or are his frame and skill set really only a fit at CB in the NFL?

DeJean's Primer is today, I believe. Gutekunst on Monday sounded very confident in describing DeJean as versatile enough, and I tend to agree. He talked so much about him, though, it makes me think he's not targeting him.

Marin from West Lawn, PA

Is there a certain kind of brinksmanship involved when teams attempt to make trades to improve draft positioning? For example, when Team A is hoping to move up, who decides how much time before contacting Team B with a trade offer?

Trade talks are constant throughout the draft, and initial parameters are proposed in advance. The conversation will be something like, "If our guy is there …" without naming the guy, "we'll look to move up." They gather info on teams that might be willing to deal and what they'd be asking for. Then when that pick arrives and the clock is ticking, they check to see if they're still willing to trade. If not, they go to the next team (if their guy remains available). Once something is agreed to, both sides finalize by calling in the terms of the trade to the league.

Joe from Liberty Township, OH

Does the clock reset when there's a trade? Obviously the team trading up already has their pick identified, but the compensation has to be agreed to, the NFL notified, and the card turned in once the trade is official. Time gets even tighter if a team is receiving multiple trade offers.

The clock does not reset. The team trading up for the pick turns in its pick basically at the same time. If a team has ever traded up for a pick and then subsequently and immediately traded that pick without selecting a player, I'm not aware of it.

Travis from McCordsville, IN

Is there any chance AJ Dillon gets cut if we invest high picks at RB in the draft? I'd like to see him stick around.

Any player signed to a veteran minimum (or slightly above) deal with little to no guaranteed money – such as Dillon, Dillard, Davis, Eric Wilson, Welch, Rochell – is no lock to make the roster. That's not a knock on anybody, just reality. That said, regarding Dillon specifically, with the change at RB1, I think his experience in this offense, plus his abilities in pass protection and two-minute, bode well for him. As an aside, for those counting the available roster spots when the Packers pull in their draft haul and undrafted rookie class, there's also no guarantee everybody on the roster today will be on it a week from now. They'll make room if they like one guy over another.

John from Madison, WI

Can you give us some insights as to how players in different positions can be compared in ranking them as football players? Seems like such a tough task and subjective based on what spot a team might value which can be subject to change.

It's highly subjective, but generally involves how high a player's ceiling is, regardless of position. Solid starter? Potential All-Pro? If a left tackle is viewed as the former and a cornerback the latter, need aside, the corner is higher on the draft board.

Julian from Gastonia, NC

It may be counterintuitive but I prefer GB takes players that are more of a sure thing than players with a bigger upside (boom-or-bust type players). The reason is that GB appears to be very good moving forward and taking bigger risks on players doesn't seem necessary. Do you have thoughts on this?

First, there's no such thing as a sure thing in the draft. The jump from college to pro football is enormous. Second, just because a player has a higher upside doesn't mean he's boom-or-bust. Solid players can have low or high ceilings. Third, games (and championships) are decided by elite players. Difference-makers, bear with me, make a difference. If you're not trying to find them, someone else is.

Dustin from Kansas City, MO

I just came across an article talking about how WRs are starting to be viewed like RBs. The ones coming out of college are as prepared as most of the WRs in the league and teams are starting to take notice. There will be a few superstars who get their contracts, but teams are going to start letting many of them walk away and simply draft their replacements. The article actually used the Packers as an example. Not sure I completely agree with the author on this. Curious to hear your thoughts.

I've been saying for years the college game churns out receivers like no other position, and new arrivals often produce. I think the truly elite No. 1 guys (Adams, Jefferson, Chase, etc.) will still get the big money, but I could see teams pulling back on giving high-seven-figure or low-eight-figure salaries to other veteran receivers just because they're pretty good. They'll start getting more selective, I believe.

Mike from Coleman, WI

I know we don't really care what other teams are "thinking" … maybe this is just a question on draft philosophy rather than motives of other teams. Why would teams presumably reach for round 1 or 2 picks like QB Nix, McCarthy and Penix but the market for Fields is just a sixth-round pick? It can't be just economics.

That's a great point, and it's not. It's also perception, to the fan base. If a QB-needy team outbids the Steelers and gives up a fifth-round pick for a supposed retread like Fields, but it doesn't work out, that looks worse than moving aggressively for a shiny new guy who doesn't work out. The perception of the latter is the team is doing everything it can, while the former is more harshly scrutinized as missing an opportunity and spinning the wheels.

James from Asheville, NC

In the time you've been covering the Packers which are the top three drafts that you feel produced the most immediate dividends? I find it hard to match last year but I'm curious as to your three.

Prior to last year, I would've chosen my first year here, 2006 (Hawk, Colledge, Jennings, Spitz, Moll), along with '13 (Lacy, Bakhtiari, Franklin, Hyde) and '14 (Clinton-Dix, Adams, R. Rodgers, Linsley).

Amanda from New York, NY

Interesting to hear Gutey say that he would have been comfortable taking Tucker Kraft if Jayden Reed had not been available in the second round after trading back. It seems like it should be unlikely that a player would be available an entire round after a team passed on him near the top of its board, but I suppose it must happen, particularly in later rounds as boards fan out more. Has Gutey (or another GM) made a similar comment like that before regarding another player?

The ones that come immediately to mind are Elgton Jenkins in the middle of the second round ('19) and Randall Cobb with the last pick of the second round ('11). The Packers felt very fortunate in both instances.

Ron from Broken Arrow, OK

Mike, I just watched "Unscripted," and I couldn't agree more with you about the Packers drafting multiple offensive lineman and linebackers. Seems to me that protecting Jordan Love is job No. 1 to continue the Packers' success in the future. Also, as you noted, there are not a lot of bodies currently on the roster to compete with Quay Walker and Isaiah McDuffie at linebacker. Can you see the Packers doubling up on both of these positions within their picks in rounds 1 through 3?

Might be tough given the other key areas (CB, S, Edge) I'm sure Gutey would love to address early on, but it wouldn't shock me.

David from Janesville, WI

Gents, it will never happen, but I think it would be fascinating to hear GMs give an honest woulda/coulda/shoulda after a draft. In hindsight do they feel they lost their guy by not moving up one extra spot? Regrets on giving up too much? Disappointment that someone else had their sleeper pick as well and took them off the board? Rarely do you get a retrospective statement like Wolf's "I'd have taken Moss." Or do you think GMs don't spend a second thinking about it and just look forward?

Oh, they think about it. Human nature. But you said it, it'll never happen. There's no benefit to their club and the players they did select to publicize the post-mortem, no matter how enlightening it might be to all of us.

CJ from Marshfield, WI

Hi Mike, regarding consensus picks by fans discussed recently, the 2020 pre-draft day consensus pick was Denzel Mims when WR fever was perhaps at its highest temperature in GB – whew. The other side of that was the selection of Love, which was not embraced by fans or draftniks. Many said it was not the time for the next QB, but fast forward and the 2021 and 2022 QB classes have not impressed (so far). How much did the QB forecast for those years factor into the urgency and decision to trade up?

Great question, and I have no idea. If Gutey & Co. had indeed projected weaker QB classes the next couple of years (while the '20 group has proven to be outstanding), they deserve even more credit than they've received.

Paul from Ledgeview, WI

Mike without naming names, is there the next BG in the building?

There are multiple. I have no doubt about that. But I also don't think Gutey is going anywhere anytime soon. If the Packers have another year like last year, his top lieutenants will be getting serious looks.

Michael from Baraboo, WI

What are you most looking forward to with the draft?

Getting done. I don't say that as some sort of curmudgeon, but as exciting as the draft is, it's also a TON of work. Friday and Saturday are looking pretty brutal in that regard to an aging scribe like me.

Gary from Cross Plains, WI

So what is your draft day routine look like? Wes mentioned seeing how Kiper was "begging" for Valentine to be picked, so seems like you are paying attention to some of the network draft shows. But you're also writing stories/posting updates on our picks throughout. What are you doing and how do you get it all done?

We don't really know. But somehow all the stories get written, videos get shot, copy gets edited, and content gets posted, hopefully in time to stop at a local watering hole before it closes Saturday night.

Kevin from Savage, MN

A few months ago when I found out my son and daughter-in-law were expecting our first grandchild, I inquired with the Packers ticket office about getting him on the season-ticket waiting list. I was told he needed to be born first. Well, he arrived yesterday, and my second attempt to get him on the list has been started. First name of Walker, which allows for a few jersey options. Here's to the newest and youngest (at least for today) Packer fan. And a lifetime of enjoyment ahead of him.

New fans and new players, all in the same week. How wonderful.

Curt from Pine Island, MN

The draft is the human experience in a nutshell. You can try to imagine your life after changing any one decision, but every decision made by others impacted you having that choice to make in the first place.

Happy day before the draft, everybody.

Nfl says review into potential tampering by falcons, eagles will not conclude week of 2024 draft.

Headshot_Author_Nick-shook_1400x1000

Around The NFL Writer

The NFL's review into the circumstances surrounding a couple of high-profile free-agent moves will not reach a conclusion before the 2024 NFL Draft begins on Thursday night in Detroit.

The league said its efforts to gather information regarding the Eagles' and Falcons' actions at the start of the new league year and any potential tampering remain ongoing and will not finish this week, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported on Tuesday. The news means 2024 picks will not be involved in any possible discipline that could come as a result of their findings.

The Eagles are under review for their signing of Saquon Barkley away from the division-rival Giants, while the Falcons have drawn attention from the NFL for their efforts to sign quarterback Kirk Cousins . Public comments regarding both moves drew additional attention from the league, and as of Tuesday, NFL officials have not wrapped up their investigations into the matters, per Rapoport and Pelissero.

Cousins signed a four-year, $180 million deal with Atlanta at the start of the new league year, while Barkley moved from New York to Philadelphia on a three-year, $37.75 million contract.

AirPlay streaming launches today on TVs at IHG hotels and resorts

Avatar for Benjamin Mayo

Beginning today, more than sixty IHG Hotels & Resorts locations will support the new iOS 17 AirPlay feature, allowing guests to easily stream to the TV in their hotel with no additional hardware required.

Just like you would stream to an Apple TV at home, guests are able to seamlessly select their hotel TV as the AirPlay output to watch videos, view photos and stream music from their iPhone or iPad.

To connect to a compatible hotel TV, simply scan the QR code on the screen. This connects their device to the Wi-Fi network and authorizes AirPlay to that screen. The compatible TVs themselves are manufactured by LG.

The QR code is unique to the hotel room and ensures that guests can only privately stream to the TV in their room, with no chance of accidentally broadcasting to other TVs at the hotel. When they check out, the AirPlay link is automatically erased, all reset and ready for the next occupants’.

This AirPlay at hotels functionality was announced as part of iOS 17 last year. However, the feature was delayed and did not roll out until iOS 17.3 in January . Of course, the feature was pretty useless without somewhere to use it. Finally, from today, iOS users can take advantage of that support, if they are staying at participating IHG locations.

You can see a full list of available locations on IHG’s website , with more rolling out in the coming months.
