'They'll be fun to watch': Catch up with the WooSox before their home opener at Polar Park
WORCESTER — Baseball is back in the Canal District.
With the Worcester Red Sox set to host their home opener at Polar Park Tuesday, many aspects surrounding the ballclub have changed since fans last saw them play in person.
And yet, some things have stayed the same.
After a hectic winter that included the Boston Red Sox Triple-A affiliate undergo an ownership change , name a new general manager and sign a plethora of players, there are still some familiar faces around 100 Madison St.
Breaking Larry Lucchino, who helped bring Red Sox to Worcester, dies at 78
On the field, fans will recognize returning players like David Hamilton, Niko Kavadas and Nick Sogard — and manager Chad Tracy — while well-known figures like Brooke Cooper , Larry Lucchino and Charles Steinberg — and mascot Smiley — will be present around the ballpark.
The 2024 season will feature a little bit of new with a little bit of old for the WooSox.
“I’m optimistic,” Tracy said. “There’s obviously a lot of guys that are new to our ballclub, (but) we got to know them in spring training, and I think we have a pretty good idea of what our club is all about, time will tell.
“Obviously you have to go out there and play the games, but we’re versatile, we’re going to have guys that move around a lot, and I think they’ll be fun to watch, so we’re excited to get going.”
What can WooSox fans expect around the ballpark?
The WooSox traveled back to Worcester Sunday after winning the rubber match of their three-game season-opening series, 6-2, over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
After a day off, right-handed pitcher Cooper Criswell makes his WooSox debut as Worcester’s starter in his team’s home opener against the Buffalo Bisons. Tuesday’s first pitch is slated for 3:05 p.m. while pregame ceremonies start at 2:28 p.m., with live coverage on NESN beginning at 2.
Following some on-the-field festivities that feature the who’s who of Worcester, former Red Sox outfielder and World Series champion Trot Nixon will sign autographs in Sherwood’s Diner from the third to sixth inning.
“One of the great Rockwellian joys of baseball is to meet a player, which is why player-fan interaction is a key theme of WooSox ’24,” said Steinberg, the WooSox team president.
To increase engagement between the team and their fans this season, the WooSox will provide more than 100 opportunities to interact with players , including a Meet the Team Party on Saturday, five Autograph Wednesdays with current players and 13 Throwback Thursdays with former players.
Getting to know you: A mix of new and old faces from the WooSox welcome the press to Polar Park for 2024 media day
For their home opener (and every other Tuesday home game during the months of April and May), the WooSox are providing fans with free parking in the Library Lot on McGrath Boulevard, the Union Station Garage and the Coney Island Hot Dogs lot across Southbridge Street.
On Wednesday, the club will give away Worcester tumblers that fans can bring back throughout April and May to receive free hot chocolate. The artwork on the tumbler depicts iconic buildings and scenes from the City of Worcester.
Worcester’s first homestand of the season features a six-game series with Buffalo, with unique start times of 3:05 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon followed by a 6:05 p.m. game Friday and then usual start times of 4:05 p.m. Saturday and 1:05 p.m. Sunday.
“We recognize that April weeknights can be school nights and cool nights,” Steinberg said. “So we are trying to schedule our games when more children can enjoy sunny, springtime baseball. Playing weekday games at 3:05 p.m. also allows Worcester’s thousands of front-line heroes who work the (7 p.m. to 7 a.m.) shifts to enjoy some baseball in the sunshine. We want to ensure that everyone can partake of WooSox Baseball.”
What to eat: The ultimate food guide for WooSox games at Polar Park
A few other changes around the ballpark — when it comes to food at least — include a nachos and taco bar past the right field wall , lobster rolls in the first base plaza and coffees and treats in the same area.
“Everything we’ve done has been based on community collaboration,” Steinberg said.
WooSox manager, players ready for ‘fun’ season
When it comes to the product on the field, the WooSox manager is optimistic.
He’s still getting to know all his players as the 2024 campaign gets underway.
“You really never know until you go out there and start playing,” Tracy said last week. “It’s all unknown going into the season, but I know we have a really good quality group of guys. We’ll see where it all falls when we get out there and start playing games.”
WooSox fans will recognize six players — Cam Booser, Hamilton, Joe Jacques, A.J. Politi, Sogard and Chase Shugart — who were on the team’s Opening Day roster last year when they return to Polar Park Tuesday.
In Worcester’s season-opening series against the IronPigs, Hamilton hit the ground running with a pair of home runs to build off a 2023 campaign during which he set a Red Sox Triple-A record for stolen bases in a season with 57.
Following a season when the WooSox set a franchise record for wins (79), the manager and his players are excited as baseball returns to Polar Park.
“For fans coming to the ballpark, on any given day we could have a different lineup,” Tracy said. “We’re very versatile.”
Said pitcher A.J. Politi: “It should be fun.”
“We have a lot of new faces but a lot of old faces, too,” said Sogard, an infielder and outfielder. “It’s a good group, the new guys are all great, and it should be a solid year.”
