How to Choose your Safari Shoes

When preparing for an African safari there are so many things to remember. Vaccinations, insurance, flights, clothes… Then at the last minute you remember the shoes! What are the best safari shoes to pack? should I take safari boots instead? Will flip flops do? We’re here to help you answer that question.

My personal recommendation is to not take more than 3 pairs of shoes for safari in total. I used to always take 4 pairs and one would end up never being worn. Shoes are one of the most important items on any trip, but also one of the bulkiest. And if you take the wrong shoes your trip might be ruined. If you are careful about how you choose your safari shoes, you won’t take up unnecessary space in your luggage and you’ll have a great trip.

Here are our recommendations of shoes to take on a safari:

Safari Shoes for a Walking Safari

Choose an eco friendly flip flop., safari sandals, waterproof safari sandals for your water based safari: okavango delta and beyond, shoes for staying at a lodge.

When you visit Africa to see wildlife, it is very likely that you’ll take a walking safari , even if it’s a short one. And you should! A walking safari will get you closer to the animals, and you will find yourself immersed in their habitat. And you’ll need the best shoes for safari to enjoy it.

choose a good safari shoe if you are going on a walking safari

Getting proper walking safari shoes  is important for several reasons. First of all, if you’re walking in the bush, you need good closed-toe shoes, never flip flops or sandals. I hate to break it to you, but snakes, spiders, and scorpions are never far from your feet. And your toes are delicious. If you are super-paranoid about being bitten by a snake, take  mid or tall hiking boots (safari boots) instead of low hiking shoes so your ankles are also covered. I personally think it’s overkill to wear tall hiking boots and they’re not that comfortable in the hot months. My feet suffer from claustrophobia. For me, low-height hybrid hiking shoe/ trainers are the perfect safari shoes.

I always bring my KEEN hiking shoes . They are an older model of the Targhee II. I just love them. I bought them second hand (they were hardly worn and I was super broke) a few years ago for our week-long hike in Yellowstone and have been using them ever since (that makes them 6 year old!). They are breathable and they dry super quick. This is handy if you are clumsy like me and tend to accidentally step into creeks and rivers. Keen hiking shoes have what they call KeenDry ( a waterproof breathable membrane). Not just a gimmick, it totally works and they are dry within a couple hours. When choosing your walking safari shoes, I always recommend to get shoes that are waterproof and breathable .

For an African safari I also wear  hike ultra light smartwool socks . I know, wool sounds hot, but they wick moisture well and you can wear them for many days and they don’t smell. It’s amazing! Since my hiking shoes are the most bulky shoes that I take on an African safari, they are the ones I wear on the plane. Make sure you choose hiking shoes that also function well for daily wear, and not some that will end up in the bottom of your wardrobe for months.

Here are our favorite walking safari shoes for women, safari shoes for men, and also a couple of safari boots:

Shoes for Camping while on a Safari

If you are like us and prefer to camp while on a safari, you should pack a pair of flip flops to use while showering. Your feet will thank you when using the communal showers.

You can also wear flip flops around camp, but always bear in mind that there might be lots of thorns around. Hal’s flip flops were ruined after just 5 days of camping in Botswana because of it. And some of the thorns are pretty long and thick and can easily puncture through the flip flop and into your feet. Eek! (Photo below.) On a later trip to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park , Hal got some flip flops with much thicker soles and wore them for 5 weeks straight, no problem! We advise not to wear flip flops at night since there might be snakes or scorpions around and you won’t see them in the dark. Cover your feet at night.

a thorn in my safari shoes, South Africa

Our favorite eco friendly flip flop companies are:

Patagonia : Their Environmental and Social Responsibility   is known worldwide. They  donate 1% of their sales to environmental organizations around the world. For example, through grants and donations, Patagonia supports Buffalo Field Campaign, a non profit that protects Yellowstone’s wild buffalo and their habitat.

Chaco : I own a pair of Chaco flip flops and I love them. I also just found out about their sustainability. Their ReChaco program allows you to send your old Z/sandal for repairs (resoled or restrapped) for free. Almost 300,000 sandals have been repaired so far, keeping a lot of still usable shoes off the landfill. Also, the webbing on their sandals is made of recycled plastic bottles! I own the Chaco’s Chillos flip flop on the color Sadie Sparrow. This ones are great to wear around campgrounds, and they are fine if they get a little wet. For men, I’d try the Chaco Men’s Lowdown Flip Flop . These are lightweight and have a 3.0 MM lug outsole for no slip traction.

Olli : Natural and fair trade flip flops. Made from natural rubber, these flip flops are also good for the people who make them. Olli is a partner of the the Fair Rubber Association in Sri Lanka. Every pair of flip-flops that you buy will provide education, safe working conditions, & improve the life of the very people who made them! Search Olli flip flops now .

While you can wear flip flops as your everyday shoe in hot weather, my preferred choice for safari shoes are good quality sandals with a thick sole and with a bit more foot support. Thick soles are for the thorn issues and support for comfort. You can use them camping, around the lodge, or even on a light hike if you don’t want to take hiking shoes (but always use closed shoes when hiking in the bush, seriously). My favorites are from from companies that build high quality sandals that last a long time like Taos Footwear (my absolute favorite!) or Merrell’s sandals.  A nice pair of safari sandals will be your go-to shoe on a safari so don’t skimp.

Perfect safari shoes

If you are lucky enough to spend some time in the Okavango delta on a mokoro or kayaking or any other water-based activities you need some good water sandals with an ankle strap. Flip flops might get stuck in the mud and you don’t want to lose them underwater. The perfect safari sandals for this would be something like Chacos’s sandals or Teva’s sandals .

If you are splurging and treating yourself to a nice lodge stay, you might want to give your dusty sandals a rest and wear something more fancy for dinner time. A pair of black or brown shoes/sandals go with everything and you can also wear them if you go out into town.

safari shoes safety

I love Taos Footwear, and I have a few of their sandals. I take my black Taos Trophy sandal to wear around cities and around the lodge at dinner time. It is cute, super comfy, and can take short hikes. I also take a pair of Taos Perfect sandal . Yes, it is called perfect, and I would agree! Super comfy, extra cute, and can also take you on short and easy hikes. Mine is the ‘bruschetta’ color. Since I have the other sandals in black, I wanted something more colorful.

safari shoes safety

  • You’re most important shoe is an every day comfortable sandal .
  • If you are going to do any nature walking at all (and you really ought to!) then a closed-toed lightweight hiking shoe is a must have . If you can only take two pairs of shoes, wear these on the plane and pack your sandals.
  • If you have a little extra room then throw in some light weight flip flops for around camp. Or go nuts and take a cute pair of dressier shoes for those nights out and dinners at the lodge.
  • And if you’re going to be spending a fair amount of time in and out of the water, bring a good heavy-duty sandal with ankle straps like a Teva or Chaco.

We hope our recommendations have helped you choose the right shoes to wear on safari for your next adventure!

I enjoyed reading your article, but I have some questions. My wife and I are leaving for a stay at Governors Safari camp on the Mara river in two weeks (December 2 2019). We've never been on this type of trip. We've been following the weather forecasts...they've had plenty of rain and it looks like it will rain while we're there. I have no idea how much we'll be walking in the bush, it's a 4x4 deal, I'd rather be able to get by with some sturdy sandals but I'm thinking we might need waterproof leather hiking shoes/boots. Your thoughts?

Hi Jim, Sounds like a great trip! I think some good low waterproof hiking shoes would do the trick. (or mid-height if you want more ankle support or deeper mud/water) They're good for everyday wearing (they basically look like sneakers) Cristina has a pair of Keen shoes that have lasted her forever. Here's an example of a low Keen waterproof hiking shoe that I use for everyday use and is very functional in muddy hiking conditions Keen Men's Oakenridge waterproof shoes (unless you get into water/mud more than a couple inches deep, then I switch over to rubber boots!) I hope that's helpful! Have a great trip! -Hal

When planning your safari adventure, it's important to consider what shoes you'll be wearing. Comfort and durability are key, as well as having good grip for the various terrains you'll encounter. That's why sneakers with good grip are a popular choice when it comes to safari footwear.

Sneakers are a comfortable option, as they typically have a cushioned sole that can help absorb shock and minimize fatigue during long walks or hikes. But when selecting sneakers for your safari trip, it's important to choose a pair with good grip. Safari terrains can be uneven, rocky, and slippery, so having sneakers with a strong grip will help prevent slips and falls.

One popular type of sneaker with good grip is the trail running shoe. These shoes are designed to provide stability on uneven and unpredictable terrain, and typically have a grippy rubber sole that provides traction and support. They're also usually lightweight and breathable, which is ideal for hot and humid safari climates.

Another option is a hiking shoe, which is designed to provide support and stability on rocky or uneven terrain. Hiking shoes often have a rugged outsole for good grip, and may have additional features, such as waterproofing, that can be beneficial in wet or muddier areas.

Regardless of the type of sneaker you choose, it's important to make sure you break them in before your safari trip. This will help prevent blisters and other discomfort that can occur when wearing new shoes on long walks or hikes. And remember, comfort and safety should be your top priorities when choosing the right footwear for your safari adventure.

When it comes to packing for a safari adventure, appropriate footwear is crucial. The right shoes can make or break your experience, so it's important to choose the right ones. Closed-toe hiking sandals are an excellent option for a safari, and here's why.

Firstly, closed-toe hiking sandals provide excellent protection for your feet. When you're out in the bush, you're likely to encounter all kinds of terrain, from rocky paths to sandy dunes. Closed-toe shoes will prevent any debris or stones from getting into your shoes and injuring your toes.

Secondly, hiking sandals are comfortable and lightweight. They allow your feet to breathe, making them perfect for the hot and humid conditions you'll encounter on a safari. You'll be doing a lot of walking, and your feet will thank you for choosing shoes that are both supportive and breathable.

Thirdly, closed-toe hiking sandals are versatile. They work well on a range of terrains and will keep your feet protected no matter where your safari takes you. They're also easy to wear with a range of outfits, from shorts and t-shirts to safari-style pants and shirts.

When choosing hiking sandals for your safari, look for a pair with good traction on the sole. This will help prevent slips and falls when walking on uneven surfaces. It's also a good idea to choose a pair with adjustable straps so that you can personalize them to fit your feet perfectly.

In summary, closed-toe hiking sandals are an excellent option for a safari adventure. They provide protection, comfort, and versatility, making them the ideal footwear choice for a trip to the bush. So, make sure to pack a good pair of hiking sandals on your next safari, and you'll be ready to take on whatever the African wilderness throws your way.

When it comes to a safari trip, choosing the right footwear is essential. It is crucial to put comfort and functionality above style. Safari expeditions involve a lot of walking, hiking, and sometimes even running. Lightweight trail runners are, without doubt, the best shoes to wear for a safari experience.

Firstly, the key to a comfortable safari is wearing lightweight shoes that offer support. Lightweight trail runners fit the bill in this regard. They are lightweight enough to prevent foot fatigue after walking for long hours. Trail runners have cushioned soles and offer excellent support, which makes them perfect for exploring the rugged terrain of the African wilderness.

Secondly, trail runners are durable, breathable, and offer excellent traction that makes them ideal for the uneven and rough terrain. Their design enhances the natural movement of the feet and allows for better grip on slippery and rough surfaces. Additionally, trail runners come with waterproof and breathable membranes, which helps to keep your feet dry and comfortable, regardless of weather conditions.

Moreover, trail runners are ideal for a safari because they are easy to clean. You never know what you may encounter in the African wilderness, but one thing is for sure: your shoes will get dirty. Trail runners can be cleaned with a brush, water, and mild detergent, making them ideal for safari trips.

Lastly, trail runners can be worn for more than just a safari experience. They are versatile enough to be worn for casual walks, light hiking, and other outdoor activities. They come in different colors and designs, which makes them suitable for different types of outfits.

In conclusion, lightweight trail runners are the best shoes to wear on a safari trip. They are comfortable, functional, offer excellent support, traction, and are easy to clean. Investing in a good pair of trail runners will make your safari experience more enjoyable and memorable.

Fashionable combinations: How to style faux leather joggers for any occasion

When planning your safari adventure, one of the most important considerations is what shoes to wear. To be prepared for the challenging terrain, many experts recommend investing in a pair of waterproof hiking boots. These boots offer several benefits that can be particularly helpful on safari.

Firstly, waterproof hiking boots will keep your feet dry and comfortable in any weather conditions. Some safaris may involve wading through shallow streams or walking in areas where the ground is muddy or wet. With waterproof boots, you won't have to worry about water seeping in and soaking your feet. This can make a significant difference in your comfort level and enjoyment of the experience.

In addition, hiking boots provide excellent support for your feet and ankles. This is important when navigating uneven terrain, hiking up steep hills, or walking long distances. The construction of hiking boots, with their sturdy soles and higher ankle cuffs, will provide greater stability and help prevent injuries or sprains.

Furthermore, waterproof hiking boots are typically made of durable and breathable materials. This means that they can withstand the harsh conditions of a safari while allowing your feet to breathe and reducing the risk of blisters or chafing. Additionally, the quality construction of hiking boots ensures they will last for many safari adventures to come.

Lastly, wearing hiking boots can be a great way to protect your feet from the bites of insects and the stings of plants. While on safari, it is common to encounter plants like thorns or sharp grass, as well as insects that could bite or sting. Wearing hiking boots will provide you with an extra layer of protection and prevent these kinds of injuries.

In conclusion, if you're planning a safari adventure, a pair of waterproof hiking boots should be at the top of your shopping list. Comfortable, supportive, and durable, hiking boots will help you tackle the challenging terrain and enjoy your trip to the fullest. So, invest in a good pair of hiking boots before you head out on your next safari experience.

Chilly Beach Chic: Bundling Up for the Seaside

When embarking on a safari adventure, it's essential to have the right footwear. Safari-style canvas shoes are a perfect option for this type of journey. These shoes are comfortable, sturdy, and breathable, making them perfect for the African terrain.

Since safaris often take place in hot and humid environments, safari-style canvas shoes are made with breathable materials, such as cotton or canvas. This allows air to circulate through the shoes, keeping your feet cool and dry. Additionally, many of these shoes have mesh panels to increase breathability further.

The shoe's soles are typically made of sturdy rubber to provide grip and traction on a variety of surfaces. This feature is especially crucial when trekking through the African wilderness, where the terrain can be unpredictable and challenging.

Overall, safari-style canvas shoes are an ideal choice for your safari adventure. They're comfortable, breathable, and durable, making them perfect for walking and exploring the African bush. Whether you're going on a game drive, walking safari, or camping trip, these shoes will keep your feet protected and comfortable throughout your journey.

Styling Tips: Ways to Pair Navy Chinos for a Polished Look

When it comes to going on safari, proper footwear is essential. Walking long distances in search of wildlife and encountering various terrains requires appropriate footwear that provides comfort, support, and protection. The best option for safari shoes is breathable walking shoes.

Good walking shoes should provide ample support to the foot and ankle, especially when hiking over uneven terrain. Look for walking shoes with good arch and heel support that work to improve foot posture and minimize discomfort, even after extended periods of walking. Rubber soles with deep treads provide good grip on a range of surfaces, keeping you stable on wet or muddy ground.

In addition to breathability and support, shoes that provide protection from the elements are a must. During a safari, encountering all kinds of wildlife is likely, and it's essential to wear closed-toe shoes that protect the feet from unexpected bites or stings. Boots or shoes with reinforced toes, or that have protective overlays, are great options for added safety.

Finally, when choosing the perfect walking shoes for safari, it's important to select shoes that fit comfortably and securely. Shoes that are too small or overly tight are not only uncomfortable but can also cause serious foot problems like blisters and sores. Try out a few options and choose the pair that fits snugly without causing any pain or rubbing.

With these considerations in mind, breathable walking shoes are the perfect pick for your next safari adventure. Not only will they keep your feet comfortable and cool, but they'll also provide the necessary support and protection you need to traverse the African wilderness.

Ole Miss Football Fan Fashion: Dressing for the Game-Day Win

If you are planning a safari trip, one of the most important things to consider is what shoes to wear. A good pair of shoes can make or break your experience, especially if you will be venturing into areas with rough terrain. One type of shoe that is highly recommended for walking on sand terrain is desert boots.

Desert boots are lightweight, comfortable, and provide great support for your feet. They are designed with a thick rubber sole that offers excellent grip on sand, making them ideal for walking in areas with loose soil. Additionally, these shoes have a high ankle that provides extra support and keeps sand and debris from getting in. Desert boots are also very durable, so they can withstand the harsh conditions of the desert.

When choosing desert boots for your safari trip, it is important to choose the right size. Your boots should fit snugly to prevent blisters and other foot discomforts. A good rule of thumb is to buy a size that is slightly larger than your everyday shoe size, as your feet may swell from the heat and walking. It is also advisable to wear socks that wick away moisture to keep your feet dry and comfortable.

Another advantage of wearing desert boots on safari is that they are versatile. They can be worn with different types of outfits, from casual to semi-formal. Since you will be mostly outdoors, wearing comfortable and stylish shoes can make a big difference in how much you enjoy your trip.

In conclusion, desert boots are a great choice for anyone planning a safari trip with sand terrain. They are durable, comfortable, and provide excellent support for your feet. Additionally, they are versatile enough to be worn with different types of outfits, making them a practical investment for any traveler. So be sure to pack your desert boots when preparing for your next safari trip!

5 Perfect Shoe Pairings for Winter Dresses

When packing for a safari, you'll want to make sure you have appropriate footwear to keep your feet comfortable and protected. An essential part of any safari outfit is a good pair of Merino wool hiking socks. Not only are these socks perfect for the outdoors, they also provide ultimate comfort and support for your feet.

Merino wool comes from Merino sheep, which is renowned for producing high-quality wool. The wool used in these socks is soft and non-itchy, making it perfect for all-day wear. Additionally, it has moisture-wicking capabilities which will help regulate your foot temperature and keep your feet dry, even during hot or humid conditions.

Hiking on a safari often means walking long distances in rugged terrain, which can be tough on your feet. But with the added support and cushioning of Merino wool hiking socks, you can keep moving without feeling discomfort. Furthermore, cushioned hiking socks can help prevent blisters and protect your feet from any potential injuries while you're out exploring.

Aside from its practicality, Merino wool is also a durable material that can last for years with proper care. It's important to wear high-quality socks like these on a safari trip to ensure the longevity of your footwear investment. Plus, if you plan on going on other outdoor adventures in the future, these socks will be versatile enough to take with you.

In summary, Merino wool hiking socks are the perfect footwear choice for any safari trip. They offer comfort, support, protection, durability, and versatility, all wrapped up in one package. Don't forget to pack a few pairs before you head out on your next adventure!

Sledding Down the Snow: Dressing Properly for Tubing Excitement

Safaris are known for their dusty, wild terrain and often require long treks through rugged landscapes. When it comes to footwear for safaris, ankle-high leather boots are the way to go. Not only do they provide ample ankle support and protection from the elements, but they also provide the perfect amount of coverage to keep dirt and debris from entering your shoes.

One of the most significant benefits of ankle-high leather boots is their durability. Made from high-quality materials such as leather and rubber, these boots can withstand the tough and rocky terrain of safaris. They also provide excellent traction, making them ideal for climbing and walking over uneven surfaces.

Another advantage of ankle-high leather boots is their style. They are a timeless option and can be worn in various situations, not just safari-related activities. They can be dressed up with jeans and a casual shirt, or worn with shorts and a t-shirt, making them a versatile addition to your wardrobe.

When it comes to comfort, ankle-high leather boots do not disappoint. The extra padding around the ankle and the insole provide the support necessary for long walks and hikes, making them an excellent option for a safari or even a weekend camping trip.

Overall, if you're looking for a stylish, comfortable, and durable footwear option for your safari, ankle-high leather boots should be at the top of your list. They are versatile, offer great support and protection and are a reliable choice for any adventure.

What To Wear On Safari: My Detailed Safari Packing List With Photos

' src=

You’ve all seen the brochure photos: a smiling family is sitting at a camping table in the middle of the African bush. Behind them, the sun is setting, and perhaps a giraffe is crossing the savanna landscape.

Contents (click to view)

What are they wearing? I’m sure you can picture it: lightweight designer safari gear, all matching, in indistinguishable shades of beige, taupe and camel. Maybe the dad is wearing khaki chinos and the mum has a floppy-brimmed hat (colour: putty) on her head. They all have sand-coloured lace-up boots on, and from head to toe all their clothes are pristine, clean, and crease-free.

If it’s your first time figuring out what to wear on safari, it might feel like this is the model you have to follow. Like, having booked the blindingly expensive trip of a lifetime, you now have to go out and splurge hundreds more on the ‘proper’ kit, otherwise people will laugh at you and you may even get into trouble for not doing it right.

Well I’m here to reassure you: that’s rubbish.

A packing list for safari: Pin this for later

What should you wear on safari?

I’ve been on five safaris (to Kenya , Botswana , Tanzania , Uganda and South Africa) and I still don’t own any ‘official’ safari clothes. I’ve always worn stuff I already own and been just fine.

That said, there are some dos and don’ts about packing for a safari, some things it’s a good idea to make sure you bring with you, and some stuff you should definitely leave at home.

So welcome to my complete safari packing guide. I’m going to go through a few points and FAQs, and then make a handy list at the end. Scroll down if you just want to skip ahead to that.

The writer and friends on safari in the Serengeti in Tanzania in 2016

What happens on a safari?

Days on safari follow a similar schedule. You wake early and head out shortly after sunrise for a morning activity – usually a game drive but sometimes a boat cruise, guided walk, or scenic flight.

You return to the camp mid-morning for brunch and have some hours to relax in the heat of the day before heading out again for another activity later in the afternoon. Your afternoon game drive or boat cruise normally ends with sunset drinks in a beautiful location, before you head back to the camp for dinner.

After dinner you might sit round the campfire or boma enjoying a few drinks with your fellow guests, but most people go to bed fairly early, ready for another dawn start the next day.

What to wear on safari during the day

The most important thing to note is that a safari is not a fashion show. It can be hot and dusty, or rainy and muddy, so it’s important to dress for comfort and practicality, so leave the designer gear, luxury fabrics and bling jewellery at home. Instead, bring stuff that washes easily, dries quickly and hides the dirt well!

You’ll also be coating yourself daily in suncream and insect repellent, so don’t bring anything that won’t mix well with those!

When I was in Botswana in December, some days reached 40 degrees C (104 F) with high humidity, so think lightweight breathable fabrics like cotton, viscose or sweat-wicking sportswear, or even linen if you don’t mind the creases).

T-shirts and shorts are your friends, but I’d avoid strappy vests for two reasons:

  • Many African countries are quite conservative, and it doesn’t do to flash a lot of skin.
  • The sun is extremely strong and the more skin you show, the more of you there is to get burned, even in a shaded safari car.

T-shirts and lightweight shorts or cropped trousers are my go-to things to wear on safari

What to wear on a game drive or boat cruise

On wildlife viewing trips you’ll be sitting in a car for several hours, so it’s important to be comfortable. T-shirts and shorts are a great option.

Early mornings in Africa can be chilly, so bring a long-sleeved shirt, light sweater or jacket just in case.

Don’t forget your hat and sunglasses. Safari cars have roofs, but sometimes the roof rolls back so you can stand up, and when the sun is low in the sky it can shine in from the side very strongly. I was surprised by how much I ended up needing my hat.

Since you won’t be walking around much, light sneakers or sandals are fine.

Safari cars are open-sided, so if it rains you may get a bit wet. Most safari companies carry ponchos in the car, to hand out to guests when it rains, but you might want to bring your own light waterproof raincoat just in case.

The author on a rainy afternoon in Botswana wearing the poncho provided by the lodge

What to wear on a walking safari

For a walking safari the principles are the same, but you should wear long trousers to prevent your legs being cut or scratched by branches, and closed-toed shoes to protect you from biting or stinging animals or insects.

Although walking safaris can sometimes last for three or four hours, you don’t actually walk that far because there’s a lot of stopping and looking at stuff. So you don’t need hiking boots; comfortable trainers or walking shoes are fine. If you’re travelling in rainy season you might want to bring waterproof or Gore-Tex ones.

Do I need warm clothes on safari?

We think of Africa as being hot, and it is, but it can also be extremely cold. If you travel during the northern hemisphere summer, that’s winter in most of Africa, and temperatures can drop below freezing especially in desert areas, if you’re at altitude, and the further south you go.

In Botswana and South Africa during the winter, average nighttime temperatures can be 0 or even -2 degrees C (28-32 F), and remember that most safari cabins and tents are not heated!

Even in Kenya, which is much closer to the equator and therefore not as cold, nights and early mornings can definitely be chilly.

What to wear on safari in Kenya: on chilly mornings I wore my lightweight down jacket

Staff in camps will provide you with hot water bottles and blankets both in your tent and on game drives, but you still need to bring warm clothes with you as well.

If you’re travelling to the southern African countries between April and October, I’d recommend bringing at least one pair of long trousers, one long-sleeved top, one jumper, and a packable down jacket.

But remember to dress in layers, as the day quickly warms once the sun’s up, and even if it’s close to freezing during the night, afternoon temperatures can ramp up to high 20s (70+ F) or more.

It’s very important to check the weather forecast before you travel, as different regions’ climates can vary.

What colour should you wear on safari?

It’s recommended that you wear plain designs in neutral, earthy or natural colours, such as shades of beige, grey, brown or natural greens.

Avoid vibrant, bright colours like orange, red and yellow, or vivid patterns. This is for two reasons:

  • It helps to make you less noticeable to animals.
  • You can get pretty dusty on safari, and natural shades don’t show the dirt so much!

Bright white and full black are also not recommended. This is not only because they show the dust really badly, but because many animals actually only see in black and white, and large gleaming white shapes or dark black ones are very noticeable to them.

The best colours to wear on safari are neutral shades like beige, grey, navy and earthy greens

With that all said, I wouldn’t worry about it too much, and you certainly don’t need to rush out and buy an entire new wardrobe full of khaki and beige. As I just mentioned, many animals only see in black and white, and when you’re inside the car, most only see the car as one large object, and not the people inside.

It’s more important to stick to the rules when you’re on a walking safari and don’t have the protection of the car.

But in general, if you pack plain, neutral-ish colours, you’ll be fine.

Why not wear blue on safari?

Some people recommend not wearing blue on safari. Apart from being a pretty noticeable bright colour, it’s said to attract tsetse flies, which are prevalent in some areas of southern Africa and can deliver a nasty bite and spread disease. They are also thought to prefer black (another reason not to wear it).

That said, my light down jacket is bright blue, and I also took a blue t-shirt and a pale blue cardigan to Kenya, and I wore all three with no problems.

What to wear on safari evenings

Most people like to dress up when they go on holiday, so you might think about throwing a few glamorous dresses, high heels or some party shirts into your suitcase.

But you probably won’t wear them. Even in the luxury camps, most people really don’t dress up for dinner, for four main reasons:

  • At night it’s a good idea to cover your arms and legs to avoid insect bites, so floaty skirts and strappy tops are a bad idea.
  • It can get quite chilly at night, so you’ll probably be more comfortable in trousers and a fleece anyway.
  • You’ll be tired after a long day and an early start; you’ll probably find you can’t be bothered to dress for dinner as you’ll be going to bed soon afterwards anyway.
  • Walking round camp after dark you may run into snakes or spiders, and paths can be muddy and uneven, so high-heels are a definite no-no.

When I was in Botswana in December (the height of their summer) it was still 30+ degrees (86 F) in the evening, so I wore lightweight trousers or a long casual dress and then liberally coated myself with insect repellent. In Kenya in September it was a bit cooler, around low 20s (70 F), so I wore trousers, a t-shirt and a light cardigan, and had my jacket handy for later in the evening as the temperature dropped.

Is it OK to wear jeans on safari?

It’s perfectly fine to bring a pair of jeans for the cooler evenings, especially if you’re travelling in winter when you know it will be chilly at night.

However jeans aren’t recommended for game drives as you’ll probably be too hot in them during the day, and if you need to wash them they’ll take ages to dry.

As a general rule I wouldn’t take jeans on safari but instead bring lightweight trousers. The convertible zip-off ones that turn into shorts are especially good as you can have long pants for cold mornings and safari walks, and convert them into shorts once the day’s warmed up.

Pro tip: Whatever you choose to bring, make sure you have some ‘room to grow’! The food on safari is usually really good and you won’t be doing much exercise, so stretchy waistbands are a good idea!

Can you wear leggings on safari?

Yes, absolutely. Leggings are a great thing to bring on safari because they’re lightweight, wash and dry easily, are comfortable, and protect you from bugs and the sun. Just stick to neutral colours and leave the snazzy activewear designs at home!

I always pack a pair of leggings for safari – and if there’s a gym in the hotel then I can also use them for a workout!

What to pack for safari: bring gym kit if you like to exercise, just in case

What are the best shoes to wear on safari?

As I mentioned above, high heels and smart shoes are definitely not the thing to bring on safari. For game drives it’s fine to wear sandals or light sneakers, and for safari walks you want closed-toed comfortable walking shoes.  You definitely don’t need to buy special safari boots, no matter what the sales people might say.

If your lodge or hotel has a pool, you might want to bring some flipflops (also handy to have for walking around in your tent at night, or for nipping to the bathroom block if you’re staying in a campsite).

Can you wear trainers on safari?

Yes, absolutely. I always pack a pair of Asics Gore-Tex trail trainers that I wear for exercise, when it’s muddy or raining, and for walking or hiking. On game drives and boat cruises, and for walking around the camp in the evening, I have a pair of Skechers Go-Walk sneakers that are super comfortable and easy to slip on and off.

What to pack for the beach in Kenya or Tanzania

Many people like to combine their safari with a few days on the beach, perhaps in Zanzibar in Tanzania, or at Diani or Vipingo in Kenya .

Here’s where you will get the chance to dress up a bit – as if you’re staying in a nice hotel or beach resort destination, there will definitely be opportunities to put on a strappy dress, holiday shirt, or some sparkly sandals.

If you’re planning to hit the beach for a few days at the end of your trip, you’ll definitely want to throw in one or two nice evening outfits. And don’t forget swimwear and a beach cover-up too!

Can you wash clothes on safari?

This is a very important question, and the answer is yes! Almost all safari lodges and camps offer a laundry service and most of the time it’s included in the price of your stay. So you can wash your clothes as often as you like at no extra cost – which means you really don’t need to bring huge amounts of luggage as you can wash and re-wear your clothes several times.

Note that in many places the laundry is done by hand by the hotel staff, dried out in the sun, and ironed using an old-fashioned coal iron. This is yet another reason not to bring anything too delicate or precious, as there’s a small chance it may get damaged during the laundry process.

On safari in Africa you can wear comfortable, casual clothes for almost everything

What sort of underwear should I bring for safari?

Ladies: remember that you may spend many hours bouncing around over unsealed and bumpy roads in the back of a safari car. Being quite an athletic build, this is not something that’s ever bothered me, but I’ve been reliably informed by more curvy girls that a sports bra can be a life-saver in this situation. So if you’re particularly susceptible to bouncing, bring sports bras!

It’s also important to note that the people who handwash your clothes are usually male, and for cultural and hygiene reasons they won’t wash women’s underwear. Ladies will need to bring a small amount of hand wash (though sometimes laundry soap is provided) and wash your own pants and bras in the basin. For this reason it’s a good idea not to bring anything too fancy or delicate: lightweight, quick-drying microfibre underwear is best.

Other things to pack for safari

Of course, packing is not all about clothes. Here are a few other things you won’t want to forget (more in the complete packing list below):

Camera, spare batteries, chargers, plug adapters

Can you imagine going all that way on safari on the trip of a lifetime and then forgetting your phone charger or camera? I know, I’d die!

So definitely make sure you pack all your gadgets, and all the cables and plugs you’ll need to make them work! And then bring spares!

Often hotel rooms and safari tents only have a limited number of plug sockets, so if you have loads of gadgets, it’s a good idea to bring a multi-socket splitter. I recommend one with surge protection : power cuts can happen frequently and if there’s a surge when the power comes back, your devices can get fried. This happened to me the night before my Tanzania safari , so now I’m extra careful!

Inside a luxury safari tent, Kenya

Medication and toiletries

Most of the places you’ll be staying will be out in the bush, with limited access to shops. Make sure you bring all the toiletries, medicines and personal items you’ll need, as once you leave the airport, opportunities to replace anything that’s missing will be very limited.

Do you need malaria tablets for safari?

Large parts of Africa have malaria, including popular safari countries like Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe, so it’s very likely that you may need to take malaria tables on safari. I usually take doxycycline which is cheaper than malarone, but may not be suitable for everyone so speak to your pharmacist or travel clinic.

You can check the malaria risk for the country you’re visiting, as well as any other vaccine requirements at the Travel Health Pro website here .

Some countries also require you to have a proof of yellow fever vaccination – you can check if this is needed on the website above as well. For example, places like Kenya and Tanzania won’t let you in without proof of vaccination if you’ve spent time in a yellow-fever-risk country before arriving. If you have already had your yellow fever jab, make sure you pack the certificate!

Best suitcase for safari

This is important, so pay attention! Many safaris involve internal transfers by tiny plane or even helicopter. They all have pretty strict packing rules, with a maximum of 15 kg weight per person and no hard-shelled suitcases allowed. Luggage must be soft sided, and don’t overpack! You shouldn’t need to anyway, since you can wash everything when you’re there.

Wheels are OK as long as it’s a soft bag, so I recommend a soft holdall with or without wheels, or a wheely backpack like the one I have and love . This one came to Kenya and Botswana with me with no trouble at all.

Packing for safari for photographers

If, like me, you’re travelling with 15 kg of camera gear, don’t stress. The little internal plane operators are used to photographers and will let you put your backpack of gear at the back of the plane. I travelled with 15 kg of hold luggage and another 15 kg of camera gear around Botswana and Kenya, and it was never an issue.

What should you NOT take on safari?

Now I’ve told you all the things you should bring on safari, here are a few things it’s a good idea to leave at home.

Perfume: No one in your safari car will thank you for dosing yourself liberally with Eau de Whatever, and if you wear a very strong scent it may even allow animals to detect you sooner and run away faster.

Hairdryer: Many safari camps run on solar power and cannot support a hairdryer. Those that can (if they’re on the grid, or running off a generator), will usually provide one that’s suited to the electricity supply. As I said, no one really worries too much about their appearance or cares about what your hair looks like on safari anyway.

Camouflage clothing: This might surprise you, but wearing military-style camo print clothing is a no-no in many African countries, where it’s associated with the military. It’s actually illegal to wear camo gear in Ghana, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Another group photo to help you decide what to pack for safari

Plastic bags: Disposable plastic bags are banned in Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda. You should be fine with the little zip-lock one for your liquids on the plane, and I’ve used reusable plastic packing bags many times with no problems, but try to keep plastic bags to a minimum or you may get a fine.

A drone: Unless you have special permission, drones are not allowed in most lodges and African National Parks.

Expensive watches, jewellery, and other valuable items: This doesn’t just apply to African safaris but to all travel. Jewellery can easily get lost, damaged or stolen, so if you care about it, leave it at home.

A hard-shelled suitcase: As mentioned above, all safari companies ask you to bring a soft bag or at most a wheeled soft holdall , as these are much easier to pack into the small luggage spaces on planes and in cars. You will not be thanked if you bring rigid-sided luggage.

Where to buy safari clothing

For the most part, you don’t need any specialist clothing for safari. You can wear your own normal clothes. However, there are some great companies that do excellent clothes for travel, in suitable colours, and made from practical fabrics that are sweat-wicking, comfortable and don’t crease.

My favourite brands for travel clothes are The North Face , Patagonia , Rab , Mountain Equipment , Arc’teryx and Craghoppers , and my favourite places to shop in the UK are Ellis Brigham and Cotswold Outdoor , which stock all these brands at competitive prices, have high-street stores where you can get advice and try stuff on, and often have good end-of-season sales too.

What to wear on safari: my Africa packing list

So now we’ve gone through the details, here’s what I would pack for a 10-day or two-week safari in Africa.

What to wear on safari: Clothes

  • T-shirts in neutral or earthy colours x 5. The green t-shirt in the photo above is by Mountain Equipment . I love it so much I bought three!
  • Long trousers x 1 pair. I really like my lightweight ones from The North Face .
  • Shorts x 1 pair.
  • Convertible trousers that zip-off into shorts, or a second pair of shorts . North Face and Craghoppers both do good convertible trousers for men and women .
  • Leggings . I’m a big fan of Sweaty Betty.
  • Long-sleeved shirt for covering up in bright sunshine.
  • Lightweight jumper or cardigan for chilly evenings.
  • Lightweight jacket , fleece or mid layer for cold nights. I have a fleece from Arc’teryx and a mine is a Nano puff from  Patagonia .
  • Waterproof jacket . I have two, a lovely Zeta LT by  Arc’teryx  and a packable Meridien jacket by  Rab .
  • Dress or smart shirt for the evening if you’re going to a city or the beach (x2). For packable jersey or lightweight viscose dresses I love Boden , Sugarhill Brighton and Joanie Clothing .
  • Gym kit – if you think you’ll need or use it. But many safari camps don’t have fitness equipment and you can’t go for a run in the bush or you might get chased by a predator!
  • Sports bras or comfortable wireless bralettes x 3.
  • Underwear x 7. If you’re staying for longer you’ll need to handwash. I recommend something quick-drying and non-delicate like these microfibre ones from M&S .
  • Swimwear . I get cute bikinis and swimwear from M&S , Next , or Pour Moi .
  • Sarong or cover up (if you’re spending time on the beach)
  • Sandals or flip flops . I love my walking sandals by Teva .
  • Trainers or walking shoes for exercise and walking safaris. Mine are Gore-Tex trail trainers from Asics .
  • Soft sneakers for walking round the camp, game drives and boat cruises. I’m a big fan of Skechers Go Walks .

Pro tip: if you’re going to the beach and plan to do a lot of snorkelling, pack a rash vest or t-shirt to swim in. The sun is super strong and we all got very burnt even though we were wearing Factor 50!

What to wear on safari: layers and neutral colours are best

What to pack for safari in winter

If the forecast is for cold weather, I would add:

  • Another long-sleeved top or baselayer .
  • A warmer, packable insulated jacket .
  • A pair of jeans.
  • Beanie hat.

What to pack for safari: Accessories

  • Baseball cap or hat. My cap is this one this one by Buff and I really like it.
  • Scarf or buff to keep dust off (and you can dip it in water to cool you down on very hot days)
  • Headphones or ear buds (for the plane), you won’t need them on the actual safari! I have these ones which are pretty good and much cheaper than Apple ones.
  • Eye mask and ear plugs (if you’re a light sleeper).
  • Camera, batteries, memory cards and charger
  • Charger cables for all your devices
  • Portable phone charger. Mine is this one from Anker .
  • Plug adapter for the country you’re going to, or a universal plug adapter
  • Plug splitter or 3-way adapter with surge protection
  • Refillable water bottle (though some safari companies provide them, so check). An insulated water bottle will keep your water colder for longer on hot days.
  • A padlock for your luggage to protect you from airport thieves

Three people posing for a photo while on safari in Botswana

Safari packing list: Toiletries

As well as all your usual toiletries and medications, don’t forget:

  • Suncream. I swear by  Riemann P20  because it’s hard wearing and you only need to apply it once a day. Or for the best face SPF you will ever find, that’s non-greasy and non-orange (!), I love  this one from the Body Shop .
  • Insect repellant (though this is often provided in camp).
  • Malaria tablets ( check to see if these are required in your destination )

Pro tip: Luggage goes missing more and more frequently these days, so pack your medication or anything else vital in your hand luggage.

Hopefully this post has helped you figure out what to wear on safari

The Best Shoes for a Safari

safari shoes safety

Choosing the wrong footwear can make your safari a sour one.

Getting the wrong shoes can actually make or break your safari trip. Especially if you will be venturing into the African wilderness where there are no shops or retail store to get a shoe replacement.

This article will help you identify some comfortable shoes that you can take on your African safari.

Make sure you have walked them in before you depart for your safari so you are comfortable and comfortable with the shoes you choose.

Table of Contents

While traveling you want to minimise on travel accessories and definitely leave fins, goggles and gadgets at home. Same with shoes only carry the shoes you are going to use on your travel.

You will need some light comfortable shoes or even trainers for whe you are in the cities and towns. You will need hiking shoes if you will be on safari and possibily walking on the African savannah. And finally you will need a pair of sandles or flip flops is you will be spending time at the beach and also for the evenings when you are at the lodge or hotel.

If you are walking through muddy forest conditions, sand, or river crossings, a medium-high-rise, waterproof boot with a built-in tongue will keep water and sand out and keep you comfortable.

You should expect your hiking boots to show less dirt if they are darker. Go for a comfortable, strong, and lightweight pair of shoes. For wet conditions, you must purchase a boot with traction in its soles, and you should have higher ankle padding for support and to prevent pesky ants.

If you are paranoid about being bitten by a snake, wear mid- or tall hiking boots (safari boots) instead of low hiking shoes for your ankle protection. Wearing tall hiking boots is overkill for me personally, and they can be very uncomfortable in the hot months

Don’t Pack Too Many Shoes

It is also important to pack light. Shoes are often heavy, bulky travel items and will cost you more with the airlines and also be an inconvinience while traveling.

What Kind of Shoes Should You Pack?

Consider leather shoes. Leather shoes are usually water resistant and easy to clean. If you walk thru mud, it’s much easier to throw the leather into the sink to wash which is not the case with cloth shoes and sometimes even trainers.

Synthetic safari boots do not have the classic look, but they weigh less and have more flexibility than leather boots which tend to be more expensive. In fact, most safari guides these days opt for these new style of boots due to their practicality and comfort. Why Sometimes You Need to Just Wear Normal Shoes

Weight of the shoe is also a very important factor. Finding a lightweight and durable boot is essential for walking safaris. The boot must still be able to offer you arch support and provide stability.

  • Equipped with Hydro-Shield, the seam-sealed waterproof construction and materials provide reliable protection against the elements, keeping your feet dry in wet conditions.

Rockport Men’s Storm Surge are light very comfortable for men.

The Kind Of Sandals You Should Pack

You should also bring a pair of sandals or flip flops for pool areas if you will be spending some time at the pool.

Also if you are planning a coastal or beach vacation, flip flops or sandals would be appropriate.

In hot weather, you can wear flip flops everyday, but I prefer good quality sandals that have a thick sole. To avoid irritation, thick soles are designed for comfort.

You can use them to walk around camp, you should choose thick-soled sandals. Thorns are an issue in Africa, and thin-soled sandals will not protect your feet.

The best sandals I have used are from companies that make high-quality sandals that last a long time even after your African safari adventure.

It is important to pack light when going on an African safari. Comfort is very important and you shouldn’t place too much weight on your feet. It is also important to dress accordingly at the lodge and beach.

What Shoes to Wear on Safari: The Ultimate Guide

When embarking on a safari adventure, one of the most important considerations is what shoes to wear. The right footwear can make all the difference in terms of comfort, safety, and enjoyment during your trip. In this comprehensive guide, we will discuss the various factors to consider when choosing safari shoes, as well as provide recommendations for the best options available. Whether you’re trekking through the savannah or exploring the dense jungles, this article will ensure that you are well-prepared with the perfect footwear for your safari.

Table of Contents

Understanding the Terrain

Before delving into the best shoes for a safari, it is crucial to have a clear understanding of the terrain you will encounter. From vast grasslands to rugged mountains, each safari destination offers its own unique challenges. Being aware of the terrain will help you choose the right shoes that provide the necessary grip, support, and protection.

Grasslands and Savannah

If you are planning a safari in grasslands or savannah, you’ll likely encounter vast open spaces with dry, flat, and sometimes uneven terrain. In these environments, it is essential to choose shoes with sturdy soles that can handle walking long distances. Look for shoes with good traction to prevent slipping, as the grass can be slippery in certain conditions. Opt for closed-toe shoes to protect your feet from thorns or any potential hazards.

Mountains and Hilly Terrain

For safaris in mountainous or hilly regions, you’ll encounter steep slopes, rocky surfaces, and uneven paths. In such terrains, ankle support is crucial to prevent sprains or injuries. Choose hiking boots that provide excellent ankle stability. Look for boots with aggressive tread patterns and durable soles to ensure reliable grip, even on slippery or loose surfaces. Waterproof boots are also recommended to keep your feet dry in case of rain or crossing shallow streams.

Swamps and Wetlands

If your safari adventure takes you through swamps or wetlands, you’ll need shoes that can withstand muddy and wet conditions. Waterproof boots with high shafts are ideal for such terrains as they help keep your feet dry and protect against leeches or other waterborne parasites. Look for boots with deep lugs on the soles to provide excellent traction in muddy areas. Additionally, consider boots with quick-drying properties to avoid discomfort during extended periods of wetness.

Deserts and Sandy Areas

When venturing into the desert or sandy areas, you’ll need shoes that can handle the fine sand and scorching heat. Opt for lightweight shoes or sandals with closed toes to prevent sand from getting inside. Look for shoes with breathable materials to allow air circulation and keep your feet cool. Sand gaiters can also be useful to prevent sand from entering the shoes and causing discomfort.

Jungles and Forests

Exploring the dense jungles and forests on your safari requires shoes that offer excellent grip and protection. Look for shoes with aggressive tread patterns to ensure traction on slippery or muddy surfaces. Closed-toe shoes are essential to protect your feet from sharp rocks, roots, or any potential snake bites. Consider shoes with water-resistant properties, as jungles can be humid and prone to sudden rain showers.

Comfort and Support

Comfort is paramount when spending long hours on your feet during a safari. Choosing shoes that provide adequate cushioning, arch support, and breathability will ensure that your feet remain comfortable throughout the journey. It’s essential to prioritize comfort to prevent blisters, soreness, or fatigue, which can significantly impact your safari experience.

Look for shoes with ample cushioning to provide shock absorption and reduce the impact on your feet and joints. Thick midsoles or shoes with added padding in the heel and forefoot areas can help provide excellent cushioning. Consider shoes with removable insoles, as they allow you to customize the cushioning level to suit your preferences.

Arch Support

Proper arch support is crucial for preventing foot fatigue and maintaining overall comfort during a safari. Look for shoes with built-in arch support or consider using orthotic inserts if you have specific arch support needs. Well-supported arches will help distribute your body weight evenly and reduce strain on your feet and legs.

Breathability

Safaris can often involve hot and humid conditions, so it’s important to choose shoes with breathable materials to allow proper airflow and prevent excessive sweating. Look for shoes with mesh panels or ventilation features that promote breathability. Proper ventilation will help keep your feet dry, reduce the risk of blisters, and minimize unpleasant odors.

Protection from Wildlife

When venturing into the wild, it’s crucial to choose shoes that provide adequate protection from potential encounters with wildlife. From venomous snakes to thorny bushes, there are numerous hazards to be aware of. Your footwear should shield your feet from these potential dangers and ensure your safety at all times.

Snake Protection

In regions where venomous snakes are prevalent, consider wearing snake-proof boots or gaiters. These specialized boots are designed with puncture-resistant materials to protect your feet and lower legs from snake bites. Snake-proof boots often have high shafts that provide additional coverage and peace of mind during your safari.

Thorn and Bush Protection

In areas with dense vegetation, thorny bushes, or sharp rocks, it’s essential to choose shoes that offer adequate protection. Look for shoes with durable materials such as leather or synthetic uppers that can withstand potential punctures. Opt for shoes with reinforced toe caps or rubber toe guards to protect against accidental impacts.

Insect Protection

Insect bites can be a nuisance and potentially pose health risks, depending on the region you’re visiting. Choose shoes with closed toes and closed heels to minimize the risk of bites. Consider treating your shoes with insect repellent sprays or wear insect-repellent socks to provide an additional layer of protection against insects.

Climate Considerations

The climate plays a significant role in determining the type of shoes to wear on safari. Whether you’re experiencing sweltering heat or torrential downpours, your footwear should be suitable for the prevailing weather conditions. Choosing shoes that can handle the climate will ensure your feet remain comfortable and protected throughout your safari.

Hot and Dry Climates

In hot and dry climates, breathability and heat management are crucial. Look for shoes with mesh uppers or ventilation features that allow airflow and prevent excessive sweating. Consider shoes with moisture-wicking properties to help keep your feet dry. Lightweight options such as hiking sandals or breathable trail shoes can be great choices for hot and dry safaris.

Humid and Wet Climates

In humid and wet climates, waterproof shoes are essential to keep your feet dry and prevent discomfort. Look for shoes with waterproof membranes such as Gore-Tex that provide reliable protection against rain and wet ground. Choose shoes with quick-drying properties to ensure that they dry out swiftly after encountering water. Additionally, consider shoes with antimicrobial treatments to prevent fungal growth in humid conditions.

Cool and Variable Climates

If you’re visiting a safari destination with cooler or variable climates, it’s important to choose shoes that provide insulation and protection from the elements. Opt for shoes with insulation layers or linings to keep your feet warm in colder temperatures. Look for shoes with weather-resistant uppers to shield your feet from wind or light rain. Additionally, consider shoes with good traction to navigate slippery surfaces in damp or icy conditions.

Packing Tips

Efficient packing is crucial when embarking on a safari, and your shoes can take up valuable space in your luggage. By following some packing tips, you can make the most of your luggage space while ensuring you have the necessary shoe options for your safari adventure.

Choose Versatile Shoes

Opt for shoes that can serve multiple purposes to minimize the number of pairs you need to pack. Look for shoes that are suitable for both hiking and casual wear. Consider shoes with removable insoles or adjustable features that allow you to customize their functionality based on your needs.

Pack Lightweight Shoes

Choose lightweight shoes to reduce the overall weight of your luggage. Lightweight shoes not only take up less space but also make it more comfortable to carry your luggage during transfers or while on the move. Look for shoes made from lightweight materials such as mesh or synthetic fabrics.

Utilize Shoe Bags

Use shoe bags to protect your other items from dirt or potential damage caused by your shoes. Shoe bags also help keep your shoes organized within your luggage. Consider using waterproof shoe bags to prevent any moisture from wet or muddy shoes from seeping into your other belongings.

Maximize Space with Packing Cubes

Utilize packing cubes to compress your shoes and make the most efficient use of your luggage space. Packing cubes not only help keep your shoes separate from your clothes but also allow you to compress them to save space. Roll or fold your shoes tightly before placing them in the packing cubes.

Practical Shoe Options

Now that you have a thorough understanding of what to look for in safari shoes, it’s time to explore some practical options that meet all the necessary criteria. These recommendedshoe options have been highly regarded by safari enthusiasts and offer a perfect blend of comfort, protection, and style. Whether you prefer hiking boots, trail shoes, or sandals, there is a shoe option to suit your preferences and the specific requirements of your safari adventure.

Hiking Boots

Hiking boots are a popular choice for safaris due to their excellent support, durability, and protection. Look for hiking boots with sturdy construction, ankle support, and aggressive tread patterns for maximum grip. Brands like Salomon, Merrell, and Keen offer a wide range of hiking boots specifically designed for rugged terrains and long hours of walking. Opt for waterproof models if you anticipate encountering wet conditions during your safari.

Trail Shoes

If you prefer a lighter and more agile option, trail shoes are a great alternative to traditional hiking boots. Trail shoes offer the perfect balance between comfort, support, and flexibility. Look for shoes with breathable uppers, cushioned midsoles, and durable outsoles with multidirectional lugs for reliable traction. Brands like Columbia, The North Face, and Adidas have a variety of trail shoes that are suitable for safaris in different terrains.

Hiking Sandals

For safaris in hot and dry climates, hiking sandals can provide excellent breathability and freedom for your feet. Look for sandals with adjustable straps for a secure fit and cushioned footbeds for comfort during long walks. Popular brands like Teva, Chaco, and Keen offer hiking sandals that are designed to handle various terrains while keeping your feet cool and protected. Make sure the sandals have durable outsoles with good traction to prevent slipping.

Multi-Sport Shoes

If you’re looking for a versatile shoe option that can handle different activities on your safari, consider multi-sport shoes. These shoes are designed for a range of outdoor activities and offer a combination of comfort, support, and durability. Look for shoes with rugged soles, protective features, and breathable uppers. Brands like Merrell, Salomon, and Columbia offer multi-sport shoes that are suitable for hiking, walking, and other adventurous pursuits you may encounter during your safari.

Breaking in Your Safari Shoes

Wearing new shoes on a safari can lead to discomfort and blisters. To ensure your footwear is ready for the adventure, it’s essential to break them in beforehand. Breaking in your shoes allows them to mold to the shape of your feet and helps prevent friction and discomfort during your safari.

Start Early

Begin breaking in your safari shoes at least a few weeks before your trip. This will give you enough time to wear them regularly and make any necessary adjustments or exchanges if they don’t fit correctly or cause discomfort.

Wear Them Around the House

Start by wearing your new shoes around the house for short periods each day. This will allow your feet to adjust to the shoes gradually. Pay attention to any areas of discomfort or rubbing and make adjustments as needed, such as loosening laces or using additional padding.

Gradually Increase Wear Time

As your shoes start to feel more comfortable, gradually increase the amount of time you wear them. Take them for short walks or hikes in different terrains to simulate the conditions you’ll encounter during your safari. This will help identify any potential issues and ensure your shoes are suitable for the intended purpose.

Test Them on Uneven Surfaces

When breaking in your shoes, be sure to test them on uneven surfaces to ensure they provide adequate stability and support. Walk on different terrains and inclines to get a feel for how the shoes perform in various conditions. This will give you confidence in their performance during your safari.

Make Necessary Adjustments

If you experience persistent discomfort or rubbing in specific areas, consider making adjustments to your shoes. This could involve adding additional cushioning, using different lacing techniques, or seeking professional advice from a shoe specialist. Ensuring a proper fit and addressing any issues will significantly enhance your comfort during your safari.

Maintenance and Care

Properly maintaining your safari shoes is essential for their longevity and continued performance. By following some simple maintenance tips, you can ensure that your shoes remain in excellent condition and ready for future adventures.

Regular Cleaning

After each safari excursion, clean your shoes to remove dirt, mud, or any other debris that may have accumulated. Use a soft brush or cloth to gently scrub the shoes, focusing on the outsoles and any hard-to-reach areas. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that may damage the shoe’s construction or materials.

Drying Properly

Allow your shoes to dry thoroughly after each use, especially if they become wet or damp. Remove the insoles if possible and place the shoes in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Stuff the shoes with newspaper or absorbent materials to help absorb moisture and speed up the drying process. Avoid drying your shoes using artificial heat sources, as this can cause damage or deformation.

Storing Correctly

When not in use, store your safari shoes in a clean and dry location. Avoid placing heavy objects on top of them, as this can deform the shape of the shoes. If possible, store your shoes with shoe trees or stuff them with newspaper to help maintain their shape and prevent creasing. Keeping them in a shoe bag or box will protect them from dust, dirt, and potential damage.

Replacing Worn-Out Shoes

As with any footwear, safari shoes will eventually wear out after continuous use. Pay attention to signs of significant wear such as worn-out soles, deteriorating support, or visible damage. When your shoes no longer provide the necessary comfort or protection, it’s time to consider replacing them. Investing in new shoes will ensure optimal performance and safety during your future safari adventures.

Alternative Footwear Options

While traditional safari shoes are the most common choice, there are alternative options worth considering depending on the specific activities or environments you’ll encounter during your safari. These alternative footwear options provide versatility and comfort for unique safari experiences.

Water Shoes

If your safari includes water-based activities such as river cruises or canoeing, consider wearing water shoes. These shoes are designed to get wet and dry quickly, making them ideal for water-based adventures. Water shoes provide excellent grip on wet surfaces and protect your feet from sharp rocks or potential hazards in the water. Look for water shoes with sturdy soles, secure straps, and quick-drying materials.

Walking Sandals

Walking sandals offer a balance between breathability and protection, making them suitable for safaris that involve walking or hiking in warm climates. Look for sandals with cushioned footbeds, adjustable straps, and durable outsoles. Walking sandals provide excellent airflow to keep your feet cool and comfortable while still offering some level of protection against rough terrain or potential hazards.

Trail Running Shoes

If you’re planning on fast-paced hikes or trail runs during your safari, trail running shoes can be a suitable alternative to traditional hiking boots or shoes. Trail running shoes are designed for agility, speed, and versatility. They offer lightweight construction, excellent traction, and cushioning for maximum comfort and performance. Look for trail running shoes with protective toe caps and durable outsoles for added durability and foot protection.

Local Insights and Recommendations

Lastly, gaining insights from locals who are familiar with the safari environment can provide valuable guidance when choosing the right shoes. Local experts, guides, and experienced safari-goers possess invaluable knowledge about the specific conditions, challenges, and requirements of different safari destinations. Incorporating their insights and recommendations into your safari shoe selection process can help you make informed decisions and ensure that you are well-prepared for your adventure.

Reach out to local safari operators or guides and inquire about their recommendations for footwear. They can provide insights based on their experiences in the region and suggest the most suitable shoe options for the specific safari activities you plan to undertake. Additionally, engage with online forums or communities where fellow safari enthusiasts share their firsthand experiences and recommendations for footwear. Their insights can provide a wealth of information and help you make the best choice for your safari.

By considering the terrain, comfort, protection, climate, and local insights, you can make an informed decision when choosing the perfect shoes for your safari adventure. Remember to break in your shoes before your trip and properly maintain them for long-lasting performance. With the recommended shoe options and preparation, you’ll be ready to embark on your safari adventure with confidence, comfort, and style.

Embarking on a safari adventure is an exciting opportunity to immerse yourself in nature and witness incredible wildlife up close. However, it’s essential to be well-prepared, and that includes choosing the right shoes. So, lace up your footwear of choice and get ready for an unforgettable safari experience!

The best shoes for your specific safari.

Kenya, Masai Mara, Safari

How Long Is Your Trip?

When it comes to picking the best safari shoes, we need to remember what’s right for one person and their trip isn’t right for everyone.

That’s why I want to kick off this article, by getting you to think about your specific trip and what shoes might best suit your needs.

To start with, you need to think about where, when and how long you’re planning to safari for.

If you’re simply visiting one country in Africa on a short 1 week trip, then you may be able to take a couple of pairs of different shoes because you won’t be limited by weight in the same way as if you’re undertaking a long overland trip through many countries in Africa, likely living out of a backpack you have to carry.

On a short trip therefore, where you’re likely to have a suitcase you can wheel around, taking a few pairs of shoes might not be such a problem.

If you’ve got a heavy backpack to carry, you might limit yourself to just one!

Where and When Are You Going on Safari?

safari shoes safety

Next, we need to consider where and when you’re going to safari i.e. in which country and at what time of year.

This will drastically affect what the best shoes for your safari are, because you may need something waterproof if travelling in the rainy season, something well insulated if it’s likely to be cold, or something breathable if you’re travelling in the height of summer.

For example, the jungles of East Africa (if you’re heading to see the gorillas ) have very damp, humid conditions then certainly require boots that are waterproof and have good grip.

Compare this is to travelling to Etosha National Park in Namibia in the height of summer, where the dry, desert-like conditions here and searing heat, mean keeping your feet cool will be of greatest importance.

What Type of Safari Are You Taking?

safari shoes safety

The third thing to think about when considering what the best shoes for your African safari might be is the type of safari you’ll be enjoying.

Full driving safaris, which are common in parks such as the Serengeti in Tanzania or the Masai Mara in Kenya , where dangerous predators mean you can’t exit a vehicle, will necessitate very different footwear to if you’re enjoying a walking safari with rhinos in eSwatini (formerly Swaziland) or Zimbabwe, where physical trekking on uneven ground will mean good, study boots are very important.

Ditto, a luxury safari where vehicles are a bit more comfortable means you may want to take shoes that are lighter than a rough, budget 4wd safari vehicle, where sturdy shoes that prevent your feet from knocks and bumps might be a better idea.

If you’re staying in a lodge, a more relaxed sandal will be more appropriate than if you’re wild camping and need some protection for those toilet trips in the night!

When it comes to the best safari shoes for you therefore, a little time to think about what type of trip you are likely to undertake, where, when and how long for, will certainly help you prepare the best footwear.

And if you’re looking for ideas about the best safari experience, why not check out this great range of options that cover some of the top wildlife attractions and national parks across the continent.

4 Safari-Specific Shoe Suggestions

And to get you thinking a little more, here’s 4 suggestions to help you narrow down your research…

#1 For gorilla trekking in Uganda, these waterproof and sturdy Salomon Quest Gore-Tex boots have excellent grip, tread and high ankle support to cope with the rough jungle conditions underfoot, as well as keep your feet well protected from any nasty creatures!

#2 For safaris in desert countries like Namibia, where it’s very hot and dry and you’re largely staying instead a vehicle due to the risk of predators, then a good supported and sturdy sandal, will probably be best for keeping your feet cool yet comfortable, making these Arizona Birkenstocks ideal for the job.

#3 For walking safaris in hot Southern African countries like Swaziland or Zimbabwe, something inbetween a big clumpy boot and a sandal will be best. I highly suggest a walking shoe if this is something that’s likely to feature on your itinerary, because not only do they have good grip and support with a thick sole, but they also keep your foot well-ventilated and are flexible, low-rise and light for any quick movements you may have to make. These North Face Hedgehog Fastpack GTX are a good option because they are waterproof too – handy if there’s a heavy dew in the morning!

#4 And finally, for safaris in humid countries such as Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa, something light, comfy and airy, but that will protect your feet from knocks and bumps in a 4wd vehicle, will be best. In this case, a trail runner shoe, like these New Balance Fresh Foams would be perfect.

Practical Points to Think About For Your Safari Shoes

Safari shoe colour.

One thing I know a lot of people think about when it comes to the best shoes for their African safari is colour… because I get a lot of questions about this!

And while colour doesn’t matter a huge amount, I always suggest a natural shade like black, grey, brown, navy or dark green are best.

There are a few reasons for this, although none have very much to do with the wildlife, given most safari animals only see in black and white.

Instead, natural colours make for the best safari shoes in my opinion, simply because a) they match with most other clothing colours well, which makes packing a lot easier and b) they show up the dirt less, which makes cleaning them (or not) a lot easier!

I also personally think natural colours look a lot more stylish than say, a bright pink pair, but this is a cosmetic point, rather than anything practical and certainly down to personal choice.

Waterproofing

We’ve touched on this already, but if you’re travelling anywhere in Africa during the rainy season, waterproof safari shoes are a must.

Even outside of rainy season, humid conditions in East Africa make waterproof boots necessary in my opinion.

Equally, heavy morning dews, which are not uncommon in Southern Africa, make a safari shoe made from Gore-Tex a good option here too.

Temperature

safari shoes safety

Safari shoes that keep your feet cool through good ventilation, will definitely make your safari a more enjoyable experience, especially if you’re travelling in the summer season in Southern Africa, for example, where the temperatures can be scorching between the months of December and February.

However, travelling here in the winter months (June to August) can be very cold and in this case, a warm, well-insulated boot would be best.

safari shoes safety

As travellers, we always need to consider weight when packing and selecting something lightweight as your safari shoe of choice is a great option.

Not only will this keep luggage weight down, but having a big, clumpy boot on your foot when you’re clambering in and out of safari vehicles, trying to set up camp or going trekking is never fun.

Of course, you have to balance this against protection, but do remember that as light as possible is a good motto to stick to in my book.

And so we get to protection.

A good sole is very important on any safari shoe in order to help support the arch of your foot and protect it from knocks and bumps.

Ankle support can range from a low-rise trainer, runner or walking shoe, to a full height hiking boot, so whatever you choose, just make sure they fit snuggly around the ankle to offer it support.

When it comes to protection, a mid-length hiking boot can be a good option here, balancing the best of both worlds in terms of protection and weight.

Flexibility

Again, it’s about a trade-off when it comes to protection vs flexibility in a safari shoe, but generally, I would lean towards something lighter and more flexible than something heavy and stiffer.

This is the problem with very sturdy leather hiking boots in my opinion, they are just too heavy and too stiff.

A light, mid-length hiking boot, made from breathable Gore-Tex, or a sturdy trail running shoe with good support and a thick sole, would make much better options if you ask me.

But one feature where you shouldn’t compromise, is grip.

This is key in any safari shoe you choose and whether it’s a good sandal, a light runner or a sturdy hiking boot, good grip is a must.

5 Top Safari Shoes Based on Practical Features

#1 For a lovely natural coloured shoe that goes with most things and won’t show up the dirt easily, these Salomon X Ultra 3 GTX walking shoes are perfect.

#2 For waterproofing points, I really do think these Keen Terradora waterproof hiking boots are hard to beat. They are mid-length too, which means good ankle support, but less weight.

#3 When it comes to temperature, if you need something that will keep your feet warm, but that is also breathable, these Saucony Peregrine trail runners are superb and also offer excellent grip and good protection.

#4 If a lightweight safari shoe is crucial to you, then maybe stick to a simple runner or trainer as your footwear of choice. These New Balance 880v9 GTX are waterproof and weigh less than 300 grams! Good protection and durability too.

#5 And in terms of flexibility, it’s hard to look past the Asics Metarun , which have a Gel technology that not only makes them super responsive, but also 55% lighter than your standard pair of runners.

DON’T HEAD OUT ON SAFARI WITHOUT THESE OTHER 5 ESSENTIALS

#1 Binoculars – They don’t’ need to be expensive, but my cheap Eurohike pair were a great investment.

#2 Toilet Paper – Bush toilets don’t generally provide it!

#3 Natural Sunscreen & Sun Hat – Things get hot on safari so do be prepared.

#4 Good Camera & Lens – An absolute must if you’re looking to capture the incredible landscape and wildlife. I love my mirrorless Sony A6000 , which is light, compact and robust – ideal for Africa travel.

#5 Sarong – Whether it’s covering your shoulders from the sun, using as a pillow on long bus journeys or protecting yourself from dust on safari, a sarong is a great multi-purpose travel item for Africa.

Best Women’s Shoes for an African Safari

Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls, Me at the Falls

I’m putting in this section about the best women’s shoes for an African safari quite simply because many women email me with this question, so ladies I’m dedicating this part to you!

We’ve touched on the colour issue above, but to reiterate, I highly suggest keeping it stylish and coordinated with natural colour footwear that is grey or black.

I’d also see if you can extend your shoe allowance to 2 pairs – both a good mid-length hiking boot / decent walking shoe and a pair of excellent, support sandals will come in very handy.

This should allow you to cover most bases in terms of walking / vehicle safaris and chilling at a lodge / camping, as well as across both South and East Africa if you’re on a long trip.

Remember your feet will swell in the heat and you might be using your hiking boot with a thick sock, so factor these elements in too when trying on your safari shoe.

safari shoes safety

Speaking from my own experience as a female traveller, I wore my Birkenstock sandals during almost all my safaris in Southern Africa because it was so hot.

However, in East Africa, I wore nothing but by brown Doc Martens due to the wet and muddy conditions.

Note these weren’t ideal, but I was on a huge overland trip from Cairo to Cape Town at the time, so these were the type of boots that covered all bases – fashion and practical – for such a diverse adventure.

3 Best Safari Shoes for Women

#1 I know I keep banging on about them, but it’s just so hard to beat a good pair of Arizona Birkenstocks if you’re looking for the perfect safari sandal ladies.

#2 For a good walking shoe, I just think North Face Litewave are a lovely light and stylish option for women.

#3 And for boots, Merell Siren are light, mid-length, waterproof and about as pretty as a hiking boot can get!

3 Best Overall Pairs of Safari Shoes

South Africa, Kruger National Park, Male Elephant

With this information in mind therefore, you can see that it’s actually impossible to nail down just 1 pair of shoes that are the best shoes for an African safari.

It’s a bit like saying, what are the best shoes for your Europe?

Well, it depends on where you’re going, when and what you’ll be doing there.

Same applies to safari shoes, but based on my experiences in Southern, East, Northern and the Horn of Africa, I’ve come up with 3 great pairs that between them cover all eventualities.

Read on to discover what my overall 3 best shoes for an Africa safari are…. and why!

And, don’t forget, if you’re struggling to decide where to safari (it’s confusing I know!) then check out these top safari tour picks for some seriously super inspiration!

#1 Teva Women’s Tirra Sandal

What I like most about these sandals compared to other women’s activewear sandals is their graceful appearance, with thin straps, which are perfect for long, thin feet like mine!

As one of the original activewear sandal brands Teva are experts in their field and these Tirra models are waterproof with a strong, secure strapping configuration that offers multiple adjustments to ensure a perfect fit.

In addition to this, the shoc pad technology offers superb comfort, with a durable footbed giving super support and spider rubbles soles providing some great grip.

Ideal for Southern Africa in particular, the great ventilation of these shoes is just what you want for the dry, hot conditions in this part of the continent in peak safari season.

Light, quick and easy to slip on and off, these sandals will take up little room in your luggage.

Available in a huge range of colours, the comfortable and supporting Teva’s Women Tirra Sandals would be an excellent choice as one of the best shoes for African safari experiences.

#2 Saucony Women’s Grid Excursion TR9 Trail Running Shoe

Good for walking or cycling safaris like Hells Gate National Park in Kenya or Matapos National Park in Zimbabwe , a pair of trail running shoes are the 2 nd pair on my list of the best for shoes for an African safari.

With tons of great brand to choose, I really love this pair of Saucony Women’s Grid Excursion TR9 Trail Running Shoes , which are great for all sorts of outdoor adventure, including safaris!

Light and durable, these top safari shoes won’t take up much room or weight in your bag.

They can also double as city footwear, perfect for the more urban areas of Africa or travel days, especially given their breathable mesh panels and excellent ventilation.

In addition to keeping your foot cool when on safari, the mesh panel’s of the Saucony Women’s Grid Excursion TR9 Trail Running Shoe are also great for keeping dust and dirt out – an excellent feature in the Africa environment!

The smart cushioning system and rubber outsole also ensure excellent grip and traction.

Perfect for safaris across Africa, these Saucony Women’s Grid Excursion TR9 Trail Running Shoes would work during dawn and night safaris, when the cold weather means you’ll need something that completely covers your foot, but isn’t overly bulky or cumbersome.

#3 KEEN Women’s Targhee II Mid WP Hiking Boot

safari shoes safety

When it comes to safari hiking boots, the Keen’s Women’s Targhee II Mid WP Hiking Boot offers unparalleled comfort and durability with excellent value for money.

Breathable, with a protective toe cap and excellent traction, these are definitely one of the best for shoes for African safari trips, such as gorilla trekking in East Africa where the ground is muddy, wet and unstable.

With an outstanding waterproof rating, the KEEN Women’s Targhee II Mid WP Hiking Boot would actually be the perfect pair of shoes for safaris across East Africa, where it can rain at any time of year and where conditions can quickly become slippery.

In the dense jungle areas of Africa, fire-ants are an additional threat, so having a hiking boot, rather than a lower supporting shoe here, is going to help you combat these pesky insects too.

As hiking boots go, I love the look of the KEEN Women’s Targhee II Mid WP Hiking Boot , which is pretty stylish as well as practical.

The brown, ‘shitake’ colour scheme they offer are almost fashionable!

You can even wear these on travel days without feeling like the total tourist hiker too!

As well as in East Africa, these are also one of the best shoes for African safari adventures if you are travelling in Southern Africa in the winter (when its freezing and you’ll likely need a boot!) as well as further north in the Horn of Africa.

For example, I wore hiking boots a lot in Ethiopia, in particular when trekking in Simien Mountains National Park and in the Danakil Depression.

How to make solar eclipse glasses, cereal box viewers and pinhole cameras to watch the 2024 show safely

By Sara Moniuszko

Edited By Allison Elyse Gualtieri

Updated on: April 8, 2024 / 12:08 PM EDT / CBS News

If you can't get your hands on a pair of solar eclipse glasses, experts say there are still ways to enjoy the event safely.

There are also unsafe alternatives, including wearing your normal sunglasses — or even stacking two or three.

"There's no amount of sunglasses that people can put on that will make up for the filtering that the ISO standard filters and the eclipse glasses provide," said Dr. Jason P. Brinton, an ophthalmologist and medical director at Brinton Vision in St. Louis.

You also shouldn't look at the eclipse through a camera lens, phone, binoculars or telescope, according to NASA, even while wearing eclipse glasses. The solar rays can burn through the lens  and cause serious eye injury.

So what can you use? Here's what doctors suggest:

How to make your own eclipse-safe glasses at home

If you don't have the traditional solar eclipse glasses, Brinton said you can also look through No. 14 welder's glasses (for people who may have access) or aluminized mylar plastic sheets.

Just like with traditional solar eclipse glasses, Brinton said it's important to make sure the material you're viewing through is fully intact.

"Make sure that there are no scratches or damage," he said.

How make a pinhole projector for safe eclipse viewing

No glasses? Indirect viewing is another way to enjoy the eclipse without damaging your eyes.

Brinton said there are several ways to indirectly view the event, including a homemade pinhole projector. Here's how to make one:

  • Put a small pinhole into a piece of paper
  • Face away from the sun, holding the paper out so the sunlight hits it
  • Watch the pinhole projection of the sun on the ground (or on a second piece of paper you hold underneath), seeing it go from a complete circle gradually disappearing

"If you're in the path of totality, of course it completely disappears." Brinton said. "That's an indirect way of viewing it that is appropriate."

How to make an eclipse viewer from a cereal box

If you want to make your indirect viewing tool a bit more elaborate, you can make an eclipse viewer with a few more materials around the house. Here's how:

  • Find a small box (popular options are cereal and shoe boxes)
  • Cut two openings at the bottom of the box
  • Using tape, cover one of the openings with a piece of paper or aluminum foil punctured with a small pinhole
  • Face away from the sun, allowing the light to hit the pinhole
  • Looking through the remaining opening to the inside of the box, watch as the sun projection goes from a complete circle to an eclipse

Need a visual? CBS Pittsburgh meteoroligist Ray Petelin  demonstrated an easy step-by-step on how to make a cereal box pinhole viewer, which you can watch below.

Doctors share how to make sure your eclipse viewers are safe

"Theoretically, since you are not looking directly to the sun during the eclipse or partial eclipse, (eclipse viewers) should be safe," said Dr. Yehia Hashad, an ophthalmologist, retinal specialist and the chief medical officer at eye health company Bausch + Lomb. "However, having said that, it's implementation that sometimes makes us worry."

  • Are your eclipse glasses safe? Here's how to know if they'll really protect your eyes during the total solar eclipse .

Why? Sometimes people have a small peek at the sun in order to adjust the box or pinhole in the right direction, he said. This can be especially common with children, who may not understand the consequences of looking at the eclipse.

"This is what makes us sometimes conservative about this method," said Hashad. "We always worry, unless you are supervising the implementation of this, especially with children since they are very vulnerable to these types of situations."

Why do you need a special viewer for the total solar eclipse?

Eye protection during the eclipse is important to prevent eye damage.

"If someone briefly looks at the eclipse if it's extremely brief, in some cases there won't be damaged but damage can happen even within a fraction of a second in some cases," Brinton said. "As an ophthalmologist, I have seen patients who have so-called eclipse or solar retinopathy."

Signs and symptoms of eye damage following an eclipse viewing include headaches, blurred vision, dark spots, changes to how you see color, lines and shapes.

Introduction: These shoes are handmade in Africa - and that is the beginning of their adventures. Now with a thinner sole, this supple, hardy footwear is suited to work, city life, safaris, and outdoor pursuits. We have taken a traditional African 'veldskoen,' modernised the cut around the ankle - and added a luxury lining for extra comfort. About Rufiji™ Explorer Safari Shoes : Affectionately known simply as "Rufijis", the Rufiji™ Explorers all started with a trip by Safari Steve to a small leather and shoe manufacturer in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Steve was looking for one pair of shoes that was suitable not only for safaris, but also to wear at home, on the high street, at work, at play, in the pub, and on expeditions. He did not find what he was looking for, but the challenge of creating such a shoe excited him, so he sat down with the master cordwainer at the small leather and shoe manufacturer and set about designing the Everything Shoe. Now handmade from suede cow hide by the same small team of highly skilled craftsmen and women, Rufijis embody our SafariLife philosophy. SafariLife is all about the crossover between our day-to-day lives and our passion for the outdoors. It is a connection, a link, which we all need in our everyday lives. We believe that you will not only walk many miles in your Rufijis, but that you will experience the diversity life has to offer every day. These shoes are styled with a thinner sole to suit your preferences. Our Rufijis are made from high quality leathers and materials: Upper :Suede Cow Hide, 1.6 -1.8 mm Lining :Cow calf lining, 1-1.2mm Insole :Leather Veg Tanned with a Eva runner of 3mm Sole : Sole is from crepe. This is not the natural crepe. And more : Eyelets are made from steel with an antique brass finish; Braided flat laces. Sole thread is a braided 1 mm thread. Our Rufijis are handmade by a highly skilled team of workers. Follow the process below: 1. Hand selecting the leather 2. The clicking process: the top part of the shoe or the upper is made. 3. Closing: here the component pieces are sewn together by highly skilled machinists to produce the completed upper. 4. Lasting room: the completed uppers are moulded into the shape of a foot with the help of a "Last". A last is a plastic shape that simulates the foot shape. 5. The finishing department: this is where the shoes are trimmed, filed, brushed, and cleaned. 6. The shoe room: here your Rufijis are checked for quality, laces are put on, and they are packed. In an age of mechanisation, products created in the hands of talented artisans speak to an appreciation of quality and attention - tailoring not only fine shoes, but also a story behind what you choose to wear. The materials of our Rufiji™ Explorer Safari Shoes are handled with the attention and expertise of skilled craftsmen to create special, strong footwear in natural materials that will be right at home on safari and outdoors, as well as a stylish focal point in urban environments. By purchasing Rufiji™ Explorer Shoes, you are also supporting African shoemakers in providing them with livelihoods. Your purchase also assists with the education and supply of stationery, sports equipment, clothes, and transport to 15 children from a nearby community. Say no to plastic packaging Your Rufiji™ shoes are packaged in a re-usable canvas drawstring bag. At The Safari Store, we are working hard to eliminate plastic from all of our packaging. This forms part of our commitment to a green future and the preservation of the environment, so future generations can enjoy pristine natural spaces. The thinner sole of these shoes is made from non-natural crepe. ⊙ LACES: The braided flat laces make for a secure fit and contribute to the overall look of the shoes. ⊙ EYELETS: The steel eyelets have an antique brass finish which complement the natural safari styling of the shoes. CRITICAL COMMUNICATIONS for all professional users logo

DAMM provides enhanced safety for Moscow Metro

DAMM’s TetraFlex system was chosen by Moscow Metro to provide a secure and reliable communication system for enhanced safety and improved operational efficiency. The project was secured through DAMM’s local partner in Russia; Integra Pro Co.

Moscow Metro was opened in 1935. Today, its 12 lines cover 301.2 km and 182 stations and carry between 7-9 million passengers a day, making Moscow Metro the second most heavily used rapid transport system in the world.

Continuous growth in passenger numbers and regular track extensions place high demands on both safety and operational efficiency. What is more, the technologies chosen to meet those demands need to be flexible enough to meet changing requirements in the future.

A top-quality, highly reliable radio communication system is essential and plays many roles. Potential security threats and more routine emergency situations create a demand for safe and reliable communication interoperability between different emergency agencies, including the police, rescue and security services. In addition, efficient staff management and control helps increase day-to-day efficiency, while passenger services are improved through passenger information delivered via data transfer.

After investigating all available technologies, Moscow Metro found TETRA to be the most suitable technology to meet their requirements for security, reliability and flexibility in terms of changing future communication demands. As a result, Moscow Metro recently decided to upgrade their current system of mixed technologies with the integrated TETRA-based TetraFlex communication system from Damm Cellular Systems.

The special features of Damm’s TetraFlex solution were able to meet all the demanding technical requirements of Moscow Metro, ranging from harsh operating conditions to fail-safe reliability:

IP65 protected housing allowed installation within limited spaces in tunnels under harsh environmental conditions, with extremely high temperature and humidity levels

  • The system’s distributed network architecture answered the need for no single point of failure
  • TetraFlex ensures channel availability and accessibility during emergency situations
  • Secure, reliable low-noise TETRA communications
  • Easy installation and limitless expansion potential thanks to the 100% IP-based network
  • Full component redundancy
  • Low power consumption of base stations

Moscow Metro is currently investigating extending the use of the TETRA system to include train control and telemetry data transfers.

TETRA has proved its value in providing highly resilient, functionally rich mission-critical voice and data communication in hundreds of implementations worldwide. Today, TETRA communication technology is known and respected within railways and metro systems across the globe.

Damm Cellular Systems have supplied TETRA communication solutions for a wide range of projects within the transport sector. The experience acquired in the course of these projects has made DAMM a specialist provider in this sector.

DAMM’s TetraFlex system offers a wide range of advanced integrated software tools. These include dispatcher solutions, network management tools, voice and data logging and replay facilities, as well as an advanced API solution for easy integration with third party applications.
