Safe travels or Safe travel? Which is correct?

When you want to wish someone to have a journey that is completed without a problem you can say “Safe Travels”. Safe travel is ok but not commonly used.

Correct Ways to wish someone a safe journey:

  • Safe travels
  • Bon voyage
  • Travel safely
  • Drive safely
  • Have a safe trip
  • Have a nice trip
  • Have a safe journey

The reason we use safe travels is that we often associate travelling with many different trips and not just one trip.

Safe travel is ok to use but in modern English, it is just not common.

We often want to wish someone a nice journey but we know that we will see them again so we just want to wish them a journey that is safe from danger.

If you will not see the person for a long time then it is better to say goodbye. You can find many ways to say goodbye in this article here.

Travel safe or travel safely?

Travel safely is correct because in this case travel is a verb and to modify the verb we need to use the adverb “safely”

Can you say Safe trip or Safe journey?

Yes, you can say “Safe trip” or “Safe Journey” but we usually use “Have a….”.

John: I am leaving now, see you later!

Peter: Have a safe trip!

Peter: Have a safe journey!

Bon Voyage – Wait isn’t that French?

Yes, Bon Voyage is the French for Safe travels or literally “have a good trip”

It is common to use bon voyage in English because people are often going on a trip to a foreign country so people use it to sound more exotic.

10 Professional Ways to Say “Safe Travels”

safe journey or travels

Plenty of phrases work as interesting ways to say “goodbye” to someone.

Things like “safe travels” and “take care” are popular. Although, “safe travels” might not hold up as well in professional contexts.

So, it’s worth having a few alternatives prepared.

This article has gathered some synonyms to show you a better way to say “safe travels.”

Is It Polite to Say “Safe Travels”?

It is polite to say “safe travels.” Overall, it’s a very popular choice to use as a farewell when someone is going away for a while (i.e., on vacation).

However, it’s unprofessional in an email. You can say it in spoken situations, even if they’re formal, but we don’t recommend using it in emails.

It is appropriate to say “safe travels” as a polite farewell. So, feel free to use it in most situations (besides an email).

Here’s an example showing you how it works:

Safe travels , Jackie! I hope you have the best time out there with the others.

  • It’s very friendly and joyful.
  • It’s a great way to say goodbye to people you care about.
  • It’s a little too conversational for an email.
  • It doesn’t work unless someone is going traveling (meaning it’s limited).

Clearly, “safe travels” isn’t the best choice to include in a business email. Therefore, you should have a few professional alternatives ready to go.

Keep reading to learn what to say instead of “safe travels.” We will share some great formal synonyms to mix things up.

What to Say Instead of “Safe Travels”

  • Enjoy your trip
  • All the best for your trip
  • Enjoy your vacation
  • Have the best time away
  • Enjoy your time off
  • I hope you travel safely
  • See you after your travels
  • Best wishes on your travels
  • Make the most of your travels
  • Safe journey

1. Enjoy Your Trip

When people spend time away from work, it’s likely they’re doing so to enjoy themselves and relax. After all, work can get stressful and difficult. We all need to unload sometimes.

Therefore, “enjoy your trip” is a great formal alternative to “safe travels.” It shows you hope someone has a good time away from work.

We recommend using it when emailing clients . This phrase works well when your client is about to leave on holiday. It’ll put them in a good mood (providing they read your email before leaving).

Check out the following example while you’re here:

Dear Daniel, Thank you so much for getting back to me on such short notice. I hope things go well while you’re away. Enjoy your trip , Bradley Smith

2. All the Best for Your Trip

You can always use “all the best” at the end of an email. It’s a very common way to sign off a formal email . But you don’t have to stop there.

Try adding “for your trip” to the end of it when someone is going on vacation. “All the best for your trip” is a polite and friendly phrase that works as an email closer.

It shows you wish someone the best time away . Again, work can be stressful. So, any time people get the chance to get away from it should be the best time away!

Here’s an email example that should help you understand it:

Dear Duncan, I appreciate that you’re out of the office now until the 25th. However, I would like to say thank you for all your help. All the best for your trip , Dean Watmore

3. Enjoy Your Vacation

Simplicity is key in emails. Overly complicated language or long-form sentences can make your emails undesirable to read. People may even skip over them.

So, why not keep your synonyms simple like “enjoy your vacation.” It’s a better way to say “safe travels” that keeps things friendly and formal .

You can use it regardless of the connection you have with the recipient.

For instance, it works well when emailing employees . If they’ve booked some vacation time, use it when sending your last email to them.

We also recommend reviewing this email sample:

Dear Ailee, This is great news. I knew you were working on something big for us. I’m so happy you’re on our team. Enjoy your vacation , Brent Fikowski

4. Have the Best Time Away

Another great way to close an email is “have the best time away.” It shows you how to wish someone safe travels in a more polite and formal way.

It’s best to use this when emailing your boss . It keeps things civil and friendly , allowing you to wish them well when you know they have time off booked.

It’s highly effective in most formal emails, though. It doesn’t just have to work for your boss.

As long as you know someone has booked some time away, feel free to include it at the end of an email.

Don’t forget to review this sample email:

Dear Miss Adams, Thank you for reaching out to update me. Of course, I’ll let you know as soon as I have more information to share. Have the best time away , Brian Donovan

5. Enjoy Your Time Off

“Enjoy your time off” is a formal way to say “safe travels.” It works really well when someone has booked vacation time at work, and you want to wish them well.

Generally, this phrase works better when emailing employees . It’s quite a polite and friendly alternative, showing that you’re happy to grant them time off.

After all, if you’re the boss, employees usually have to ask you for vacation time. So, you’ll know when it’s coming up. If you remember it and wish them well, you’ll sound like you care more.

This email example will help you understand it better:

Dear Melissa, I will let you know as soon as I find out more about your application. I have high hopes for you. Enjoy your time off , Brenda Carlisle

6. I Hope You Travel Safely

“Safe travels” in itself isn’t a bad way to wish someone well before a trip. However, it’s too informal. A formal rewording should help to make it more appropriate in formal emails.

You can reword it to say “I hope you travel safely.” This is much more professional and works well when wishing someone well before a vacation.

Try it as an email closer when speaking to coworkers . It shows you want them to enjoy themselves while they’re away and get to their destination unscathed.

We also recommend reviewing the following example:

Dear Kylie, Of everyone in the office, you certainly deserve vacation time the most. So, I hope you enjoy yourself out there. I hope you travel safely , Jon Wells

7. See You After Your Travels

When someone goes on vacation, it’s usually only for a week or two at a time. Therefore, they’ll be back at work in no time. So, you’ll see them again soon.

You can use “see you after your travels” as another way to say “safe travels.” It suggests that someone is going away for a few weeks , but you plan on seeing them after they return.

For instance, you can use it when colleagues book time off . It shows you’re happy to see them getting away from work and can’t wait to hear about what they get up to on their return.

Here’s a useful example to show you how it works:

Dear Maria, I have contacted our client to see what they want to do with the system. I’ll be in touch when they reply. See you after your travels , Ben White

8. Best Wishes on Your Travels

Generally, “best wishes” is used as a formal email closer. It’s similar to writing things like “all the best” and “best regards.”

You can extend it, though. Add “on your travels” to create “best wishes on your travels.”

This is a very polite and friendly way to close an email. It shows you hope someone makes the most of their time off .

Check out this example if you still need help:

Dear Mitchell, This is the only time I can arrange the meeting. Don’t worry; I’ll provide notes for you on your return. Best wishes on your travels , George Marshland

9. Make the Most of Your Travels

It’s all too easy to get caught up at work and let stress consume you. It then becomes easy to also forget to take the time to enjoy yourself when you book time off work.

However, with “make the most of your travels,” this problem tends to disappear. It’s a great way to close a friendly and formal email .

We recommend using it when you want someone to have the best vacation . It reminds them to enjoy themselves because they won’t be at work for a few days.

Perhaps this email sample will also help you:

Dear Bryan, Opportunities like this don’t come up often. I’ll let you rest for now, but we’re going to need to work together when you return. Make the most of your travels , Melanie Beau

10. Safe Journey

The problem with “safe travels” is that “travels” makes it a little too conversational. You can eliminate this issue by switching “travels” with “journey.”

Now, “safe journey” is a more professional alternative. It helps you to sound more polite and respectful in an email and is a better way to say “safe travels.”

You can use it when emailing employees who are planning a trip. It’s highly effective and allows you to retain a formal tone.

Here’s a great email example to help you with it:

Dear Stuart, Thank you so much for your reply. I appreciate you’re busy trying to sort out your trip, but I’ll have a few answers for you when you return. Safe journey , April O’Neill

65 Beautiful Quotes to Wish Someone a Safe Journey

Know someone who is about to set off on holiday or go abroad? Here are 65 creative and thoughtful ways to say ‘Have a safe trip’. Copy and paste these safe journey wishes to show them that you care.

Saying goodbye to someone who’s about to depart on a journey can be difficult. Even as a writer, I often struggle to find the right words to say.

These days, I’m usually on the receiving end of goodbyes – but I’ve had to say my fair share of farewells, too.

While ‘Have a safe journey’ will sometimes suffice, quoting a simple message, a beautiful saying or even a traditional blessing is an easy way to make a farewell more meaningful and memorable.

I’ve searched books, song lyrics and inspirational sites to come up with this list of 65 safe journey wishes . You can say these out loud, or you can copy and paste your favourite into an email, use it in a caption on social media, or better still, jot it down on a hand-written note!

  • The best quotes about travelling with friends
  • The best quotes about travelling alone
  • The best quotes for travelling with family
  • Inspiring quotes about adventure & hiking
  • Beautiful sunset captions for social media

Tips for wishing someone a safe journey

Goodbyes are often emotional and can be overwhelming, especially when they take place at the airport or at the station. These tips can make saying farewell that much easier.

  • Don’t leave your goodbye until the last minute. If you want to make it meaningful, make sure you set aside enough time to say everything you want to say.
  • Focus on the next time you’ll meet. Whether it’s catching up for a meal or picking them up from the airport, make a plan and remind them (and yourself) that it’s only a matter of time before you see each other again.
  • Make a time to speak. If you know you’ll hear their voice when the flight lands or the train pulls in, you’ll feel much better about sending them off.
  • Remember, the person travelling is excited for the journey ahead – but they’re probably just as emotional as you!
  • Reassure them that you’ll be thinking of them. These safe journey wishes are perfect for just that.
  • It’s not only about what you say, it’s also what you do. Depending on your relationship, a warm hug or a hand on the shoulder can mean a lot.

Short and sweet safe journey wishes

These safe journey messages are thoughtful but to the point. They’re especially good for saying a quick goodbye on social media or by text message.

  • Best wishes for a safe, happy and fulfilling journey.
  • May the road be kind to you.
  • Go safe, move safe, leave safe, home safe.

A quote graphic.

This goodbye message comes from a Middle English phrase meaning ‘May you prosper’.

When NASA astronaut John Glenn made the first manned orbital flight in 1962, mission control used the word ‘Godspeed’ to wish him a safe journey.

  • Catch you on the flip side!

We often use this friendly way of saying goodbye in Australia. It comes from late-night radio DJs, who would use the phrase before they put on a vinyl record.

Listeners knew they wouldn’t hear from the DJ again until the record had played through and they had ‘flipped’ the vinyl to the B side.

  • Stay out of trouble!

A cheeky way of saying ‘Have a safe journey’, appropriate for someone you know well!

  • Smooth sailing!

First coined in the 14th Century, this phrase prophesied calm waters free from rough waves for someone who was about to set sail on the high seas.

It doesn’t just apply to water travel – nowadays, it can be used as a generic saying to wish someone a breezy journey.

  • “May the air be clear, your flight smooth, the plane ride safe, and the sky blue!” – Unknown
  • “May angels fly with you wherever you roam and guide you back safely to family and home.” – Traditional Irish blessing
  • “The more you weigh, the harder you are to kidnap. Stay safe. Eat cake!” – Unknown

I want to try everything once.” – Anthony Bourdain

Is It Correct to Say “Safe Travels”?

By: Author Dr. Patrick Capriola

Posted on Published: September 9, 2021

It’s early in the morning, and you have your suitcase by your side. You’re holding your tickets, climbing in the car that will take you to the airport when, behind you, your friend waves and shouts, “Safe travels!” You stop for a second because the phrase sounds a bit weird — is it correct to say “Safe travels”?

It is correct to say “safe travels” as a way to express your wishes for someone’s safe and healthy trip. This phrase is typically used during a goodbye and is one of the last things you would say to someone you wish to have a safe journey. You usually only hear it in the phrase “safe travels” or when it comes with a possessive adjective.

Here, we’ll take a look at the usage and grammar of the phrase “Safe travels” and then look at some of the most frequently asked questions surrounding the expression.

Is It Grammatically Correct to Say “Safe Travels”?

If you’ve ever wondered if “Safe travels” is grammatically correct, in short, yes: it is grammatically correct. Although the phrase may sound a bit strange at first, it is actually right. So let’s discuss why it is technically correct.

The plural noun “travels” might seem a little weird to you because it is an old word; people don’t really use the word “travel” as a countable noun very much these days. Instead, “travel” is usually a verb.

However, the phrase “Safe travels” — along with other specific phrases and usages that include the plural countable noun “travels” — has kept the word alive in very specific situations.

This means that, even though we don’t say the word “travels” very often, it is grammatically correct, especially when you use it in the phrase “Safe travels.”

So, the main reason why it is correct to say “Safe travels” is because it is a widely accepted and clearly understood English pleasantry that has stood the test of time. Since the expression “Safe travels” has such wide and clear usage by English speakers, we consider it correct.

The Many Forms of “Travel”

If you’re wondering if the phrase “Safe travels” is correct, then it probably has a strange ring to your ears. This perception is most likely thanks to the plural form of the noun “travel” that appears in the expression. So why does it sound weird? It has to do with the form of the word “travel.”

Travel as a Noun or Verb

The word “travel” has a few different forms in English ( source ). For example, you probably think of a verb when you hear the word “travel.” You might picture taking a trip or going on a vacation. The verb “to travel” is the most popular form of this word.

However, “travel” is also a noun; in fact, it is a countable noun ( source ). So, you can use the word “travel” as the subject or object of a sentence. This also means that the noun “travel” can have both a singular and a plural form ( source ). So why does “travels” still sound a bit strange?

Contemporary Expressions

The noun form of “travel” isn’t prevalent anymore. In the past, people used “travel” as a countable noun much more frequently, but nowadays, we usually opt for other ways to express the noun form of “travel.”

For instance, a more popular way to use the verb “to travel” in noun form is to use the gerund, “traveling.” Both “travel” and “traveling” are nouns; however, “traveling” is the more popular and contemporary way to talk about the action of moving from one place to another.

Another countable noun that has replaced “travel,” especially when you’re using the plural form of the noun, is the synonym “trip.” Consider these two examples:

  • I keep a journal when I travel; I make notes about all of my travels.
  • I keep a journal when I travel; I make notes about all of my trips.

The second sentence sounds much more modern, and only one word is different. You can see how the plural noun “trips” sounds much more typical in today’s English.

Here’s another thing you should know about this tricky noun: if you’re going to use the plural noun “travels” outside of the phrase “Safe travels,” it will usually take the possessive ( source ). So, instead of asking a friend, “How was your trip?” you can ask, “How were your travels?”

Of course, this sounds a bit archaic, but it is technically grammatically correct.

The Adjective “Safe”

So, since the word “travels” is an acceptable plural countable noun, it makes sense that it should come with an adjective. Thus, the adjective “safe” in the phrase “Safe travels” modifies the word “travels.”

We have to use the adjective form of “safe” rather than the adverb form since the word “travels” here is a noun and not a verb. However, don’t get confused: when you use the verb form of the word “travel,” you should use the adverb “safely.”

Review the following example sentences to see the differences between “Safe travels” and “travel safely.”

Whenever Jane drives, she travels safely : she wears her seatbelt and follows all traffic rules.

As Jane was leaving for her long road trip, I stood in the driveway and called out, “ Safe travels !”

The pilot said, “We want everyone to travel safely , so we’ve upgraded all of our safety and emergency equipment.”

The pilot said, “We hope you enjoy the flight, and we wish you all safe travels !”

From these examples, you can see the difference between the adjective “safe” and the adverb “safely.”

We use the adjective form of “safe” with the plural countable noun “travels,” while we use the adverb form “safely” with the verb form of the word “travel.” The adjective comes before the noun, while the adverb comes directly after the verb.

For more information about using adjectives and adverbs correctly, you can check out the article “ Doing Well or Doing Good: Can Both Be Correct? ”

How Do You Say, “Safe Travels”?

safe journey or travels

So, now that we’ve broken down the expression, how can you use it in action? You usually say (or write) the phrase “Safe travels” right before your friend goes on a trip. It’s a quick and easy way to show them that you hope their trip — whether it’s a long vacation or just the drive home — goes smoothly.

“Safe travels” is an expression that you’re more likely to hear when you’re speaking or texting with a friend. It’s not a very formal phrase, so you will probably see or hear it in a conversation rather than an essay or formal document.

It’s also very likely that you will see the phrase “Safe travels” written in places like an airport, a train station, or a bus stop. You can find this quick and easy phrase mostly in informal situations, although it’s not inappropriate in a formal situation, either.

“Safe Travels” FAQs

If you still have a few questions about the phrase “Safe travels,” you’re not alone! Here are some of the most popular questions about the expression “Safe travels” and some helpful explanations to help you use it correctly every time.

Is “Safe Travels” a Complete Sentence?

To put it simply, “Safe travels” is not a complete sentence on its own. To create a complete sentence, you need a subject and a verb. This requirement means that you need to define who or what is doing or being something and then define what they are doing or being.

So technically, the phrase “Safe travels” is just a noun with an adjective to modify it. However, when we use the expression “Safe travels” in English, it can stand alone without a verb because it is a pleasantry.

You might not be familiar with the word “pleasantry,” but you’ve certainly seen and heard many examples of them. A pleasantry is an expression or phrase that people use to show positive wishes, and you usually use it for a specific context or occasion.

An example of a popular pleasantry is “Happy birthday.” You say “happy birthday” to a specific person on a particular day of the year. And even though it technically isn’t a complete sentence, it expresses a complete thought and stands alone.

Just like “Happy birthday,” “Merry Christmas,” or “Good morning,” the phrase “Safe travels” can stand by itself, even though it technically isn’t a complete sentence.

Most people accept this because they understand that you are wishing them well when you use these pleasantries, even when it’s not a complete sentence with a noun and a verb.

For more examples and information about using English pleasantries in conversation and writing, you can check out the articles “ Greatly Appreciated: Meaning and Proper Usage ” and “ Is It Proper Grammar to Say, ‘Looking Forward to Talking to You’? ”

What Can I Say Instead of “Safe Travels”?

It’s always a great idea to express positive wishes to your friends, coworkers, or even your boss before they travel. But perhaps you’ve used the phrase “Safe travels” several times in your past emails or correspondences, so you might be looking for new ways to express the same sentiment.

There are lots of pleasantries that English speakers use when a friend, family member, or colleague is leaving for a trip. If you’re looking for other ways to say, “Safe travels,” then check out this list of examples:

  • Have a safe trip!
  • Wishing you an excellent vacation!
  • Hope the trip goes smoothly!
  • Have a nice flight/drive/ride!
  • Bon voyage!

These phrases all have a very similar meaning to “Safe travels,” and you can use them to send well wishes and good intentions to your friends or colleagues before they set out on a trip. That way, you can send them off with a smile!

safe journey or travels

How Do You Say “Safe Travels” in an Email?

Generally, you’ll find the phrase “Safe travels” at the end of an email. It’s usually the sign-off after the main part of the message, right before you sign your name at the end of the email.

You might be wondering if it’s professional or acceptable to add “Safe travels” to an email. In most settings, it’s perfectly fine to add this expression to the end of an email, whether you’re writing to a friend, family member, coworker, or boss.

It’s professional enough to send to everyone without adding too formal or heavy a tone to your message. This article was written for strategiesforparents.com.

Although “Safe travels” isn’t a complete sentence, you can still use it as a pleasantry in conversation or as a sign-off for an email or a message. Like many phrases and expressions in English, the wide usage and easy understandability of “Safe travels” makes it correct.

Final Thoughts

Even though the phrase “Safe travels” may sound a bit strange at first, it is a correct and grammatically accurate way to wish a friend, family member, or colleague a nice trip. The expression “Safe travels” is a light and positive way to send your friend off on their vacation or to wish them well before their journey.

You can use the word “travels” as a countable noun in this phrase, although it’s not a very popular plural noun in contemporary English. It was a widely-used word in the past, but nowadays, people prefer to use the synonym “trips.”

Of course, the word “travels” has remained part of the modern English language thanks to the phrase “Safe travels” and other specific usages of the word.

You can use the phrase “Safe travels” in an informal or professional setting: it is versatile and appropriate for all occasions, from casual conversations to formal work emails.

While “Safe travels” is not technically a complete sentence all by itself, it is a common phrase that can stand alone. This type of expression is called a pleasantry, and there are many widely-used pleasantries in the English language; “Safe travels” is just one example.

11 Better Ways To Say “Safe Travels”

“Safe travels” is a polite way to wish somebody well on their upcoming journey. However, there are better ways to be polite and reassuring to your friends when they’re ready to go somewhere (often by plane). This article will share the best alternatives for such a case with you.

What Can I Say Instead Of “Safe Travels”?

There are plenty of ways to use “safe travels” in more exciting manners. You should check out one of the following:

  • Have a good flight
  • Happy landings
  • See you on the other side
  • Let me know when you arrive safely
  • Stay safe out there
  • Enjoy your trip
  • Have a relaxing time away
  • Happy travels

Better Ways To Say Safe Travels

The preferred version is “be safe” because it keeps it simple. It’s a common phrase we use when we want to wish someone well, and we don’t want them to come across any complications or dangers that might occur if they’re not “careful” enough.

“Be safe” is great to show we care about someone. It lets them know that we worry about them, and we want them to stay “safe” no matter what happens. It works regardless of the method of transport for the journey as well, which makes it a good general phrase.

It’s common for family members to use the phrase “ be safe ” when seeing each other off. This shows that there is a lot of love behind the phrase and that it works well to show how much you care about someone’s wellbeing.

Here are a few ways we might be able to use this phrase:

  • Be safe out there. I know you like to find trouble, but for once, I’d love it if you looked after yourself!
  • Be safe on your way out! I would love to hear from you and see the pictures of all the things you get up to.
  • Don’t forget to message me when you get there! Be safe, and I love you!

“Safe trip” is a simple phrase we can use to make sure someone knows we care. Using words like “safe” reminds people that we worry about them. Even if we are not physically there with them, we hope they are “safe” and do not get into trouble.

This phrase works well regardless of the trip that someone is taking. It could be a long-distance or a short-distance trip. Likewise, it could be by car, plane, boat, or something else entirely!

This phrase works in the following situations:

  • Safe trip, Yuri! I’ll miss you, but I know you’ll be thinking about me while you’re away.
  • Safe trip back to your hometown, then. Let me know when you get there safely.
  • Safe trip, old friend. I’ll see you again whenever you’re next in town!

Have A Good Flight

“Have a good flight” is appropriate to use when someone is going to get on a plane . We use “flight” here to be specific, which helps us to show that we know what someone is getting up to and what they’re likely going to expect from their journey.

We can use this phrase in the following ways:

  • Have a good flight! I’m sure you can get all the food and drink you want on there!
  • Have a good flight, and don’t forget to let me know when you land safely!
  • Have a good flight! There’s nothing to worry about, and you know it’ll all be okay!

Happy Landings

“Happy landings” specifically highlights the “landing” portion of a journey. It works well when someone is going on a plane, and we want them to be “happy” throughout the course of their journey.

Here are a few useful examples of how this one works:

  • Happy landings, fella! Don’t forget that they really like their tips out there when you’re dining out!
  • Happy landings, then! I’ll miss you every second, so I want you to send me all the photos you can!
  • Happy landings! Don’t forget to explore some of the local scenery!

See You On The Other Side

“See you on the other side” is an informal idiom that works well in many cases. We can do it when we know that someone will be returning to see us again soon. “The other side” indicates the place where we will be staying while they go on a journey.

Check out some of these examples to see how it looks:

  • See you on the other side, then! Have a great holiday!
  • Have a great time away, Fred! See you on the other side!
  • I’ll be here waiting for you as always! See you on the other side!

Let Me Know When You Arrive Safely

“Let me know when you arrive safely” is a calm way to let someone know that you are worried. When they arrive at their destination, we can ask them to “message” us to ease our minds and show us that they are thinking about us even after their journey.

We could also use a phrase like “text me when” instead of “let me know when.” If we want to be more specific about the manner of messaging, this phrase works just as well.

This phrase works well in the following ways:

  • Let me know when you arrive safely, please! You know how much I worry about you while I’m not around!
  • Text me when you arrive safely, please! I want to know just how much fun you’re getting up to.
  • Let me know when you arrive safely! I’ll miss you every second that you’re away.

Stay Safe Out There

“Stay safe out there” is a good way to show that you care about someone. “Stay safe” helps to let them know that you’ll be looking out for them and that you want them to explore, but in a reasonable way that won’t cause them harm.

We typically use this phrase when someone is going on a long-distance journey. “Out there” is a good indicator of that.

Check out some of these examples to see how it works:

  • Stay safe out there, then! I know you’ll make all the best choices while you’re away.
  • Stay safe out there! I’ll miss you, but I know you’ll be having an absolutely adoring time!
  • Stay safe out there. You never know what hijinx you might get into, so make sure you text me!

Enjoy Your Trip

“Enjoy your trip” is a simple way to show someone that you care. It helps to let them know that we want them to “enjoy” themselves. While trips can sometimes be boring (especially long-distance ones), we want people to feel like they can still have fun.

This simple phrase works as follows :

  • Enjoy your trip, Michael! Let me know when you arrive so we can discuss the adventure more!
  • Enjoy your trip! Don’t forget to immerse yourself in the local culture when you get there!
  • Enjoy your trip! I expect you to be fluent in German by the time you get back, okay?

Have A Relaxing Time Away

“Have a relaxing time away” works well in many cases. It’s most effective when we know that someone is inclined to worry (whether about the journey or the place they’re going). If we want to calm them down, this phrase works well.

These examples will help you make more sense of it:

  • Have a relaxing time away! Remember, you don’t need to worry about a thing when you get on that plane!
  • Have a relaxing time away! If anyone deserves it, it is most certainly you!
  • Have a relaxing time away! I’m going to miss you, but I know you’ll be back in no time!

Happy Travels

“Happy travels” works really well when we want people to feel “happy” on their journey. “Travels” can refer to any method of transport, but the idea is that they’ll be spending a long time getting from point A to point B, and we want them to feel “happy.”

Perhaps one of these examples will help you make more sense of it:

  • Happy travels, mate! I know you’ll love it over there in Australia, but you must tell me all about it.
  • Happy travels, Sue! I’ll miss you, so don’t forget to write to me every day about what you do.
  • Happy travels, Dan! Thank you for coming to see me again, and I’ll see you again soon, yeah?

“Bon voyage” is a great way to wish someone well before they go on an adventure. It’s French (and Italian), and it means “good journey.” It’s a commonly-used exclamation in English when we want to wish somebody well for something they’re going to do.

It’s also comforting because it shows that we do not wish any problems to come their way when they’re on their journey.

  • Bon voyage, my little friend! I’ll see you again when you return!
  • Bon voyage, then! I will miss you, but I hope you get a chance to text me a bunch when you get there!
  • Bon voyage! I love you so much, and I’ll definitely miss you while you’re away.

“Bon voyage” comes from French, as do many of the loanwords in English. The translation of this popular phrase is literally “safe journey” or “safe trip.” However, it’s also used to express general good wishes to anyone embarking on a journey.

Here are some example sentences:

Person 1: Are you on holiday next week? Person 2: Yes. I’m going to Greece. Person 1: That sounds lovely. Bon voyage !

Person 1: I won’t be in the office tomorrow. I’m going to be in London for a couple of days for a conference. Person 2: Oh, I bet that’ll be loads of fun. Bon voyage !

Furthermore, tonally, this phrase is at the same level of informality as “safe travels.”

As such, you should feel comfortable using it as an alternative in any scenario where you would use the original phrase.

Is It Correct to Say “Safe Travels”?

“Safe travels” is a grammatically correct phrase that is commonly used to wish someone well when they’re embarking on a journey.

Travel Preparedness: 3 Tips for a Safe Adventure

world globe

This week concludes National Preparedness Month. While we often associate preparedness with being ready for disasters at home, it’s equally crucial to extend that mindset to our travels. Whether you’re planning an exotic vacation or a road trip or a weekend getaway, incorporating travel preparedness into your plans can make all the difference in ensuring a safe and enjoyable journey.

Below are some tips to enhance your travel preparedness.

1 - Research your destination

Before leaving your home and going on your expedition, gather important information about where you’re going. It is important to not just learn about the local culture, customs and laws, but also the weather conditions that area faces.

Visit Ready.gov to learn more about the hazards you may face. Download the FEMA App to get localized alerts for U.S. based locations by using the area’s zip code and stay up to date.

It may also be a good idea to learn of any nearby hospitals and embassy (if you are traveling overseas). Share the information with someone you trust.

2 - Pack an emergency kit

When you’re traveling, it’s a good idea to always carry an emergency kit. A typical disaster supplies kit is a collection of basic items, often found in your household, that you may need in the event of an emergency. If you’re away from your home for an extended period of time, consider creating an emergency kit just for your journey.

Different items surrounding a suitcase.

An emergency kit should contain everything you need to survive on your own for several days. In addition to packing basics like food, water, a first aid kit and a flashlight, you may want to consider other items specific to your car. This can include:

  • Jumper cables.
  • Flares or reflective triangle.
  • Ice scraper.
  • Car cell phone charger.
  • Cat litter or sand (for better tire traction).

If you are taking transportation that limits what you can carry, such as flying, then consider how you can consolidate and minimize items. For example, instead of carrying water, you could use a water filtration device and/or purifying tablets. Visit CDC.gov for a comprehensive overview on how to decontaminate water.

While you’re away from home, keep back-ups of important documents like your passport, ID, travel insurance and/or reservations, and keep them away from your originals. Consider using digital copies stored securely in a password-protected location online for ease-of-access.

3 - Communicate and practice your plans

Communication networks, such as mobile phones and computers, could be unreliable during disasters, and electricity could be disrupted. Planning in advance will help ensure that all the members in your travel group—including children and people with disabilities and others with access and functional needs, as well as caregivers—know how to reach each other and where to meet up in an emergency.

Planning starts with three easy steps:

  • Collect – create a paper copy of the contact information for your family and other important people/offices, such as medical facilities, doctors, schools or service providers. Be sure to share this information with those who need to know within your network.
  • Share – make sure everyone carries a copy in his or her backpack, purse or wallet. If you complete your Family Emergency Communication Plan online, you can print it onto a wallet-sized card. You should also share a copy of your plan with someone you trust that will not be included in your travel plans.
  • Practice – have a meeting to review and practice your plan with your travel group.

Consider using the Make a Plan Form on Ready.gov to communicate and practice your plan.

Travel preparedness is an essential part of every journey. By following these tips and integrating them into your travel plans, you can ensure a memorable adventure no matter what kind of travel you embark on. Remember, being prepared is the best way to turn any trip into a worry-free experience.

Latest Information for U.S. Citizens

Information for U.S. Citizens in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza

The Department reminds U.S. citizens of the continued need for caution and increased personal security awareness as security incidents often take place without warning. The security environment remains complex and can change quickly depending on the political situation and recent events. Please see the latest Israel Security Alert .

U.S. citizens should heed the  Travel Advisory  for Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. The U.S. Embassy continues to closely monitor the dynamic security situation in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. There are active military operations and active rocket and mortar fire in Gaza and the Gaza periphery.  Terrorist groups, lone-actor terrorists and other violent extremists continue plotting possible attacks in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. Terrorists and violent extremists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, and local government facilities. Violence can occur in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza without warning. If you require emergency assistance while in Israel, the West Bank or Gaza, contact the  U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem  by email ( [email protected] for those in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza or [email protected] for those in Israel outside of Jerusaleml).

Individuals seeking to depart Gaza: As of May 7, the Israel Defense Forces control the Gaza side of the Rafah Crossing. Since that day, the Rafah Crossing between Egypt and Gaza has remained closed. As soon as the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem receives information regarding new exit procedures from Gaza to Egypt, including when crossings resume, we will communicate this to the public immediately.

This remains a complex situation with serious implications for the safety and security of U.S. citizens. U.S. citizens in Gaza in need of assistance should contact [email protected] . U.S. citizens in Gaza are reminded that the U.S. government is unable to provide routine or emergency consular services to U.S. citizens in Gaza as U.S. government employees are prohibited from traveling there.

The U.S. government does not control who is permitted to depart Gaza or enter Egypt. Individuals must assess their own safety and risks in attempting to cross the border. Individuals permitted to enter Egypt will likely receive a 72-hour Egyptian visa; all those who cross should have a plan for onward travel from Egypt in this timeframe. U.S. citizens, LPRs and their immediate family members who successfully enter Egypt and require further consular assistance should contact the  U.S. Embassy in Cairo  via the  U.S. Citizens Services Navigator .  Individuals may apply for a U.S. visa at any U.S. Embassy or Consulate; U.S. immigration laws and regulations will apply.

We continue to work in partnership with Egypt and Israel towards safe passage for U.S. citizens, LPRs, and their immediate family members.

Immediate family members of U.S. citizens include:

  • unmarried children under the age of 21, and
  • parents of U.S. citizens.

Is Cancun Safe to Visit in 2024? Travel Warnings And Safety Tips

Written By: The Planet D

Updated On: June 11, 2024

We have been to Cancun many times over the years, and one of the main questions that we always get is, “Is Cancun safe?” Truthfully, the situation has always been fluid, with various safety concerns such as crime and cartel activity. While we have personally felt safe in Cancun, it is important to check your government website warnings, follow basic safety precautions, and be aware of your surroundings. Mexico takes its tourism seriously and they want international visitors to continue to spend their dollars, so they are working hard to keep Cancun safe, especially in the tourist zones and the tourist hotspots.

Table of Contents

Is Cancun Safe to Visit?

As of March 2024, the US State Department updated its travel warnings for Quintana Roo, which is home to Cancun, Playa del Carmen , and Tulum. It removed the warning about an increased risk of kidnapping, but the country is still under a level 2 advisory. There are no travel restrictions for U.S. government employees in Quintana Roo, but they are advised to exercise increased situational awareness.

As of March 2024, the Government of Canada notes that the region of Cancun has high rates of violent crime, such as homicides, kidnappings, carjacking, and assaults. Travelers are advised to exercise increased situational awareness, avoid areas with illicit activities, and promptly leave potentially dangerous situations.

Cancun’s Current Safety Situation

Is cancun safe in 2024?

Cancun is located in the State of Quintana Roo, including Playa Del Carmen, Tulum, Cozumel, and the Riviera Maya. These areas bring in a lot of dollars into Mexico, and this is certainly one of the safer areas in the country, especially compared to other states. However, crime and violence can affect tourists, so it is important to follow safety tips, maintain situational awareness, and avoid dangerous areas.

If you follow these tips and do your own research, you will find that you will feel a lot safer on your next trip should you choose to travel to Cancun. While emergency services are available, it is important to note that local emergency services may be limited outside the state capital or major cities.

Short Summary

Cancun’s security has been under a microscope due to incidents of criminal activity involving tourists. The Mexican government has taken great action to ensure the safety of visitors and citizens in Cancun. According to the US State Department, the Yucatan Peninsula is the safest region in Mexico for Americans in 2024. However, the State Department does have a travel advisory of “ exercise increased caution ” in the state of Quintana Roo.

  • Cancun is generally safe for travelers, but take necessary precautions and take government website travel alerts into consideration.
  • Follow safety tips like avoiding walking alone at night and sticking to well-known establishments.
  • When traveling in Cancun, familiarize yourself with local laws, use reputable transportation services, and opt for filtered water!

Mexico Travel Advisories and Safety Concerns

Is Cancun safe to visit Cancuns current safety situation

For the latest advisory warnings, visit th e US State Department’s Website . Right now, the State Department website warns that ” Violent crime – such as homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery – is widespread and common in Mexico.” However, when you read further, it states, “Exercise Normal Precautions When Traveling To the Yucatan State.

The State Department also notes its limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in certain areas of Mexico.

Update: On February 27, 2024, the U.S. Embassy & Consulates In Mexico Department issued a warning for all U.S. travelers visiting Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean for Spring Break Travel in 2024. Only Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum were mentioned in the warning. You can check out the full message here and what they suggest.

Canada currently has a warning of “High rates of violent crime, such as homicides, kidnappings, carjacking, and assaults, including in popular tourist destinations such as the Mayan Riviera (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos and Tulum), and Acapulco.” It states that drug cartels have a presence in tourist areas. There has been intergang fighting at establishments frequented by tourists where innocent bystanders have been killed or injured.

Incidents like this can happen in any large city or tourist destination. To put things into perspective, Cancun currently has a crime index of 56.33. When you look at the crime rate in New Orleans, Cancun is much lower than the rating of 67.92. See the comparison here.

To stay safe, travelers are advised to remain in well-lit pedestrian streets and tourist zones, especially after dark, to exercise increased situational awareness and avoid potentially dangerous situations.

Crime Rates in Cancun

Cancun has a crime rate that is similar to many major cities in the United States, most of which revolve around drug-trafficking turf wars and gang-related violence. Tourists are rarely the target, and if you keep yourself out of trouble. Avoid buying drugs, don’t stay out until the wee hours of the morning, and limit your alcohol consumption off the resort. By following common sense safety measures, you can lower your chances of any incident.

Compared to other Mexican cities, Cancun’s crime rate remains relatively low, meaning vacationers shouldn’t be too concerned about any crimes during their visit. However, they should still exercise a degree of caution.

Mexican Government’s Efforts

The Mexican government has increased security around Cancun International Airport by dispatching extra police forces and protection systems, in order to put a stop to petty crime that mainly targets travelers.

The Mexican government has taken extra security steps to protect Cancun’s standing as a favored tourist spot. These include a greater police presence at popular tourist areas such as resorts within the Hotel Zone , surveillance cameras, and gated entrances for visitors.

Initiatives were also undertaken to reduce corruption among law enforcement in this area, which resulted in the removal of numerous police officers from their posts and several top-level personnel from office due to misconduct. You can read about it here .

Collaboration between local companies and tourism workers also supports a safer atmosphere. Extra tourist police, state police, the National Guard, and even the Navy patrol the beaches.

The Hotel Zone

Is Cancun safe in the Hotel Zone

Staying within the Hotel Zone Cancun is one of the safest areas to stay in Cancun . Police patrols, surveillance cameras, and gated resorts all provide an extra layer of security for guests staying at the numerous high-end accommodations in this area. That doesn’t mean you should let your guard down, but we still recommend that you avoid walking alone at night or in secluded areas. Stick to well lit pedestrian streets to ensure your safety.

Cancun is a popular tourist destination, and efforts have been made to improve safety and security in this vibrant travel spot.

Cancun is a popular destination for Spring Break, and the kids love to party the nights away in the clubs of Playa del Carmen or Downtown Cancun. Our advice is to party responsibly. If you decide to go downtown Cancun to party for the night, exercise increased caution if you are going to local bars, stay in groups, don’t overdrink, and make sure to use an authorized taxi. It is when you drink too much and let your guard down that you become a target.

Best Practices for Staying Safe in Cancun

Best Practices for staying safe in Cancun

When vacationing in Cancun, it is important to remember that even though you are enjoying a vacation in popular tourist destinations, that doesn’t mean you let all common sense go out the window. A lot of people tend to think they are invincible on vacation, but this is when things can go wrong. Visitors to Cancun can have a great experience if they use common sense and exercise safety precautions. When visiting Quintana Roo or any other Mexican State, exercise increased situational awareness, avoid areas with illicit activities, and promptly leave potentially dangerous situations.

Additionally, be aware that local emergency services in Cancun may have limitations, especially outside the state capital or major cities.

Cancun Airport Safety

Landing at the airport can be one of your most vulnerable times. The arrivals area is crowded and confusing, which makes it easy to fall victim to a travel scam. We recommend that you exercise caution and think before you accept any rides, offers, or help from a “good Samaritan.” Despite its relatively low rate of violent offenses, visitors entering through Cancun airport can still fall victim to potential scams such as fake taxi drivers and pickpocketing in crowded locations.

Our safety advice for landing at the airport is to a private transfer in advance to your hotel, keep an eye on your valuables, and don’t leave anything unattended. If you need cash, go directly to the ATM, but we suggest bringing American dollars and small bills with you.

Transportation Safety

Transportation Safety in Cancun

There are many different ways to get around Cancun. If you want more freedom, we recommend renting a car. We have also taken local transportation without incident. However, if you want to have added safety, booking an organized tour is a good option. You can book a night out bar hopping with a local guide, city tours with a guide, and excursions with a guide, making it safer to travel. It is important to exercise increased situational awareness, especially when using local transportation.

Local emergency services in Cancun are available but may be limited outside the city center. Always be aware of your surroundings and take necessary precautions.

Taxis and Ridesharing Services

Travelers in Cancun can enjoy secure and reliable transportation options by utilizing authorized taxis or reliable apps like Uber. When getting into a cab, make sure to ask them to put on the meter. Also, plan your route beforehand, and be aware of the approximate costs before setting off so as not to be scammed.

Ridesharing services such as Uber are available in Cancun. But use caution, as there have been reports of violence between taxi drivers and Uber drivers due to contract disputes. If you are staying in a resort, we recommend using the taxi drivers with whom they have a contract; otherwise, you will have to leave the resort to book an Uber.

Buses and Public Transportation

Cancun’s buses and public transportation are typically reliable, inexpensive, and easy to access for anyone looking to discover the city. Public transportation is generally safe, but it is better not to ride it alone or late at night.

Rental Cars and Driving Tips

Using a rental car in Cancun can be an ideal way to enjoy the sights and attractions at your own pace. Make sure to book with trusted car hire agencies; we use RentalCars.com. You will have to get additional insurance Third Party Liability and Public Liability Insurance are mandatory. And make sure you avoid being on the roads after dark.

By observing these tips, people will reap all the benefits associated with renting cars while feeling safe traveling through Cancun’s streets and reveling in views of its glorious bright blue Caribbean Sea.

Food and Drink Safety in Cancun

Food and Drink Safety in Cancun

Food is generally safe to eat in Mexico, especially in popular destinations. We generally avoid eating raw foods unless they are cooked or can be peeled. When eating at restaurants, we always look for places packed with locals. This is how you know it will be fresh. Think about raw foods that would be washed in tap water. We don’t eat fruits and vegetables unless they are cooked or can be peeled.

Tap Water Safety

Visitors to Cancun should not drink unfiltered tap water, and it is recommended that they stick to bottled water. We like to use a SteriPen so that we don’t contribute to plastic and avoid ice.

Although tests may show local tap water as safe enough for drinking according to regulations, microorganisms can still be present, which could lead to health problems.

Street Food and Restaurant Precautions

We have eaten street food in Mexico, and it is delicious, but tourists should still be cautious when choosing where to eat. Don’t eat salad or vegetables that aren’t cooked, and make sure the meat is freshly cooked in front of you. You don’t want to eat something that has been sitting in the heat for hours. Select freshly prepared meals, steer clear of uncovered dishes, and go for a well-known, busy place to eat.

Health and Medical Safety in Cancun

Is Cancun Safe Health and Medical Safety in Cancun

When visiting Mexico in general we highly recommend having travel insurance. Medical emergencies can happen, and it is a small price to pay for peace of mind. You may also want to look into what medications and vaccines you need. Make sure that your routine vaccines are up to date, and you may consider additional vaccines. Hepatitis A and B are good to get, and you may want to update your tetanus. For up-to-date travel health notices in Mexico, visit the CDC website.

Mosquito-borne illnesses can also be an issue, so pack bug spray and wear lightweight long sleeves if going into the jungle. In case of a medical emergency, there are healthcare services available that tourists can access if required – adding another layer of protection on top of their Mexico travel insurance policy.

Is Cancun Dangerous for Solo Travelers?

Is Cancun Safe for Solo Travelers

Many people travel to Cancun as solo travelers, and it is considered generally safe to visit alone. Before traveling, solo travelers should research the area and let people know where they will be. Check in with family and friends back home frequently by providing them with information about where you’ll be going during each part of your journey so they know your whereabouts. Solo travelers should exercise increased situational awareness, especially in areas classified by the State Department as ‘Exercise Increased Caution,’ such as Quintana Roo. By adhering to these basic guidelines for security, an unforgettable trip awaits any adventurous solo traveler who decides to explore this picturesque Mexican destination.

Local emergency services in Cancun are available but may be limited outside the state capital or major cities.

Many of our recommendations, regardless of the destination, are to not walk alone at night or in secluded areas, so if you are traveling alone, stay in lit areas, don’t stay out too late, and stick with the crowds.

Make sure to choose a safe hotel in a good area, use trustworthy transportation services, and avoid any illegal drugs or areas with high crime. Signing up for local tours can provide additional safety as you’ll be able to go sightseeing in a group with an expert guide. Plus you’ll make friends with some other tourists.

Is Cancun Safe for a Solo Female Traveler?

Solo Female Travelers Safety in Cancun

Cancun is largely considered secure for solo female travelers as well. The same recommendations can be made to avoid deserted areas and walking alone at night, and take taxis. Choose safe accommodation, preferably in the hotel zone, and use common sense and take extra precautions.

Women are more vulnerable than male travelers, and a woman can catch unwanted attention. Don’t go out alone late at night, use trustworthy taxis, don’t wear expensive jewelry, and the hotel room safe for your valuables.

Hurricane Season

Hurricane season in Cancun typically runs from June through November, with the peak period occurring between August and October. Travelers considering Cancun as a destination often wonder about safety during these months. It’s important to note that while the risk of hurricanes exists, Cancun is well-prepared with robust infrastructure and comprehensive emergency plans in place to ensure visitor safety

Here’s the lowdown: yes, hurricanes can whip through, especially from August to October when things tend to peak. But, Cancun is pretty savvy when it comes to dealing with these big storms. The hotels and local officials have got it down to a science with solid buildings and tried-and-true safety plans that kick into gear when needed.

Plus, with all the advanced weather tech these days, everyone gets a heads-up well before a storm hits. So, while it’s smart to keep an eye on the weather, Cancun remains a fab spot for a beach vacation, even during the stormy months. Chill vibes and safety can totally go hand in hand here!

The Mexican Peso is the official currency of Cancun and Mexico, but establishments readily accept the US dollar. Hotel ATMs often dispense US dollar currency instead of Mexican Pesos.

When withdrawing cash, try to use ATMs in secure locations like inside a bank or a busy mall, rather than those on the street, to keep things extra safe. And hey, while it’s tempting to carry a wad of cash to avoid transaction fees, it’s smarter to keep just enough cash for the day and use your credit card when you can. Credit cards are widely accepted and give you that extra layer of fraud protection. By keeping these practical tips in mind, you’ll make sure your financial dealings in Cancun are as smooth as the local tequila.

1 thought on “Is Cancun Safe to Visit in 2024? Travel Warnings And Safety Tips”

We just got back and Cancun is extremely safe. We didn’t stay in resorts but three different locations and took local buses and walked around at night and at no time did we feel even the slightest concern about our safety or security. Using common sense travel, having a reasonable control of your faculties and not engaging in extremely risky behavior with strangers keeps any risk low. Mexican people are hard working, friendly and helpful.

'ZDNET Recommends': What exactly does it mean?

ZDNET's recommendations are based on many hours of testing, research, and comparison shopping. We gather data from the best available sources, including vendor and retailer listings as well as other relevant and independent reviews sites. And we pore over customer reviews to find out what matters to real people who already own and use the products and services we’re assessing.

This helps support our work, but does not affect what we cover or how, and it does not affect the price you pay. Neither ZDNET nor the author are compensated for these independent reviews. Why you can trust ZDNET

ZDNET's reviewers perform extensive testing on the VPNs on this list. We test out connections through different countries, and run speed tests using speedtest.net to measure and compare results. We also test whether the VPN has any DNS leaks while connecting, which would potentially provide information to your ISP or other services about what sites you visit or your originating location or IP address. We evaluate how easy each service is to navigate via website and app, how well it works for streaming content, and its customer service offerings. All of these factors give us a view into how well the VPN works, and how secure it is.

What to Consider

Performance

We tested the VPNs on this list to ensure robust performance in terms of connection and speed. After all, there's no point in using a VPN if your connection continually drops or lags, making it intolerable.

Simultaneous connections

Many VPNs limit how many devices you can connect to a service at the same time. If you have a phone, tablet, laptop, desktop, and possibly even a smart TV you want to connect to a VPN, you'd need a service that allows at least 5 simultaneous connections.

There's no point using a VPN unless their security protocols and encryption levels are up to scratch. We also ensured that the development team behind each recommended VPN cares about making security improvements over time and patching reported bugs.

Kill switch

A kill switch prevents you from having an unprotected connection and is an important feature for a VPN to have, as it protects by preventing a return to a default Wi-Fi connection should your internet connection unexpectedly drop.

If you're traveling this summer, don't leave security and privacy at home. A travel virtual private network (VPN) can keep your data safe and give you peace of mind when you're scrolling on the go, particularly if you're visiting another country. The service you use at home may be great for streaming movies , but VPNs are also a vital tool to protect your data abroad.

Also:  The best VPNs for streaming

Connecting to a Wi-Fi hotspot in an airport, hotel, or coffee shop may be convenient, but it definitely isn't secure. That's where a VPN comes to the rescue. The best VPNs create secure tunnels that protect your internet traffic, providing an extra layer of protection. Hence, your financial information or login credentials are at lower risk of exposure or theft.

What is the best travel VPN right now?

At ZDNET, we have thoroughly tested the best travel VPNs to help you find the best option to keep your connections safe and secure. Our pick for the best travel VPN overall is  NordVPN  thanks to its fast and reliable connections and extensive server network.

Read on for the rest of our tested top picks to find the best travel VPN for you.

The best travel VPNs of 2024

  • Large server network
  • Reliable and fast
  • Stable connection
  • Clean user interface
  • Prices change frequently

Best travel VPN overall

In our testing of NordVPN, we found it had a fast and reliable connection and was generally consistent across a wide range of situations. If you're traveling, you can likely depend on NordVPN no matter where you're connecting from.

NordVPN also supports (peer-to-peer) P2P sharing and is one of our favorite VPNs for streaming. It offers a second layer of encryption through its Double VPN feature and has a dedicated IP if you're trying to run a VPN that doubles as a server.

Review:   NordVPN offers consistent speed and performance

Regarding compatibility, NordVPN supports all major platforms and has additional browser plugins for Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge. Furthermore, the company has recently increased the number of simultaneous devices available from six to ten, and its server network has also expanded to 111 locations.

Overall, NordVPN is one of the best VPNs, especially for travel. It has a 30-day money-back guarantee, which should give you enough time to test the product and see if it's the right fit for you. You can select between Complete, Plus, and Standard, the difference being access to a password manager, data breach scanner, or encrypted cloud storage service.

After years of use, I've found it user-friendly, quick to connect, and with good speeds. I prefer this VPN as my travel option as I can leave it running while streaming content without issue. Customers also like how easy the VPN app is to use and the fact it offers good speeds, although inconsistent pricing has been noticed.

Prices start at $3.69 per month on a Standard two-year plan, which includes three months of free access. One-year plans start at $4.59. If you also want cybersecurity protections and coverage for identity theft, consider the Ultimate subscription, which begins at $6.69/month.

NordVPN features:  Servers: 6,200+, 111 countries |  Simultaneous connections:  10 |  Kill switch:  Yes |  Platforms:  Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android, Linux, Android TV, Chrome, Firefox, Edge |  Logging:  No activity logs |  Money-back guarantee:  30 days

  • Supports multiple devices and operating systems
  • Expansive server network
  • Simple user interface
  • Strong privacy audits
  • Can be expensive
  • Connections are not unlimited
  • Can be difficult to cancel subscriptions

Best travel VPN for mobile

ExpressVPN has a sizable server network in 105 countries, so no matter where you travel, you'll likely be able to connect to a local server.

ExpressVPN is a widely used VPN provider that supports many platforms and devices. It's also one of the best VPNs for iPhones and a top VPN for Android, making it useful for traveling, especially when using multiple devices on different operating systems.

Review:   ExpressVPN review: A fine VPN service, but is it worth the price?

ExpressVPN's privacy policy clearly outlines what information it collects. It doesn't log data that could be used to identify you, such as your IP address, browsing history, or DNS queries, and its recent independent privacy audit revealed no logging or data collection issues. The company recently introduced an ad blocker and the option to block explicit content by default.

One downside, however, is that the number of simultaneous devices you're permitted depends on your plan, with a maximum of eight. During long-term usage, I have found that ExpressVPN offers some of the best overall speeds and stable connectivity, although, on rare occasions, I need to switch servers as speeds suddenly drop. Customers say that while expensive, this VPN provides bang for your buck, bolstered by solid customer support.

Subscription costs begin at $6.67 per month with a 12-month plan (the 'deal' has been in place for years, so consider this the standard price). Three months of free access are included. You can also opt for $9.99/month for six months or $12.95 for one month of access.

ExpressVPN features: Servers:  105 countries |  Simultaneous connections:  8 |  Kill switch:  Yes |  Platforms:  Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android, Linux, and more |  Logging:  No browsing logs, some connection logs |  Money-back guarantee:  30 days

  • Unlimited simultaneous connections
  • Over 3,200 servers
  • Free months on offer
  • User interface could use improvement
  • Expensive monthly plans
  • Initial connections can be slow

Surfshark VPN

Best budget-friendly travel vpn.

Surfshark offers reliable and fast connections at average speeds. It is also a secure option, as our recent tests found no DNS leaks.

The company doesn't log your activity while you use the service and offers private DNS capabilities, which Surfshark calls  NoBorders mode. This feature enables you to access sites regardless of restrictive border connections. Be careful, though. Countries restricting access tend to frown on bypassing those restrictions.

Review:  Surfshark VPN: Unlimited connections make it a solid value pick

Surfshark VPN has many features, including split tunneling, a kill switch to keep your connection secure if it drops, MultiHop (a double VPN), static and rotating IP addresses, and an ad blocker. There are also inexpensive add-on tools, including a tracker-free search engine, data breach scanner, and antivirus software. One downside is that initial connections to servers can be slow.

Additionally, Surfshark operates a live  warrant canary  and is independently audited.

A feature I particularly like is the option to either disconnect entirely or pause your VPN tunnel for five minutes, 30 minutes, or two hours. Customers applaud Surfshark customer service, but some note billing issues.

Surfshark's VPN costs begin at $2.19 per month for a two-year subscription plan (three months free) and $2.79 monthly for a one-year subscription. Alternatively, you can sign up for one month for $15.45. You are billed for the complete package at the time of sign-up.

Surfshark VPN features:  Servers:  3,200+, 100 countries |  Simultaneous connections:  Unlimited |  Kill switch : Yes |  Platforms:  Windows, MacOS, Linux, iOS, Android, Fire TV, Firefox, Chrome |  Logging:  No activity logs |  Money-back guarantee:  30 days

  • Highly configurable app
  • Fast connection times
  • Bland user interface
  • Download speeds can lag
  • Possible limits to streaming services

IPVanish VPN

Best travel vpn for unlimited connections.

IPVanish is a highly customizable VPN with a user-friendly interface and app configuration options. The app gives you many server selection options and shows each location's ping speed and server load.

These features can be valuable when you're on the road because they allow you to choose the optimal server based on your current location, which can vary depending on your location. It's also a good option for streaming services.

Review:  IPVanish: A VPN with a wealth of options

If you prioritize the freedom to configure your VPN to your liking and the ability to choose from an extensive list of countries and servers, this is the VPN for you. The user interface is basic and unattractive, but it's easy to use and lays out speed statistics, country options, and more in a simple format. Customers say this VPN is easy to use on all platforms.

IPVanish offers a discounted plan for $2.19 monthly if you commit to two years. This increases to $2.79/month for a yearly plan and $10.99 for one month. Three months of free access are added to one- and two-year plans.

IPVanish VPN features:  Servers : 2,000+, 75+ locations |  Simultaneous connections : Unlimited |  Kill switch : Yes |  Platforms : Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android, Linux, Fire TV, Android TV, Chrome, Apple TV |  Logging : No activity logs |  Money-back guarantee : 30 days

  • Extremely easy to use
  • Ad-blocking
  • Malware-blocking
  • Independent privacy audit
  • Located in the US
  • Mid-range speeds

Private Internet Access

Best travel vpn for ease of use.

Private Internet Access is an excellent choice if you want a set-and-forget VPN while you're on the road. The VPN has a broad server network, but its main strengths are its simplicity and ease of use. Download, click the connection button, and the VPN will do the rest.

We also like how the open-source, Wireguard-based VPN is laid out. Location options and customizable settings are easy to reach without technical jargon to confuse new VPN users, and everything is packaged in a stylish user interface. You can also take advantage of features including split tunneling, a kill switch, and ad blocking. Customers find the service is reliable and it appears to work well in many locations worldwide.

If you opt for a two-year plan at $2.19 per month, you will receive two months of free access. If you want to try it out, you can buy a month's worth of access for $11.99 or opt for a six-month contract at $7.50/month.

Private Internet Access features: Servers : 91 countries |  Simultaneous connections : Unlimited |  Kill switch : Yes |  Platforms : Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, Chrome OS, routers, NAS |  Logging : No activity logs |  Money-back guarantee : 30 days

What is the best VPN for travel?

The best VPN for travel is NordVPN, providing fast speeds, top-notch security features, and quick connections.

At ZDNET, we have tested many VPN services over the years. I have used NordVPN extensively for years and found that it provides more rapid connections and slightly better speeds abroad. I've also found it reliable for streaming services, no matter where I am.

Even when not traveling, NordVPN can secure your internet connection from any device.

*Lowest price at the time of writing. Please note that prices may vary based on retailer and available promotions, sales, or discounts.

Which travel VPN is right for you?

The best travel VPN for you will balance security and speed. Some VPNs prioritize encryption and other security measures over performance, and while this won't affect your web browsing or streaming speeds too much, it's still a factor to consider.

However, our top VPN, NordVPN, isn't the cheapest. Other factors, like unlimited device connections, may also influence your decision.

Factors to consider when choosing a travel VPN

When you are deciding on the most suitable travel VPN for you, you should consider the following factors:

  • Price : VPN prices vary, and although the most expensive services can cost you upwards of $10-$20 per month, you can also find solid, reliable VPNs for as little as a few dollars. However, you may be interested in paying top rates if there are additional features you want, such as password managers or reliable connections in countries such as China.
  • Trial length : You need to consider your preferred price point regarding how long you think you will need a VPN. If you're in it for the long haul, consider a two-year subscription—as you also tend to earn the best prices with the longest terms. Some VPNs will offer more extended options. However, if you're only traveling for a month, you might be willing to pay a little extra so you are not tied up to a yearly contract or more.
  • Server countries : If you're going to another country, be sure to check that your VPN works there. Most VPNs work in many countries without a problem, but some areas—such as China or Russia—may require specific VPNs.
  • Security : Consider the VPN's security track record. Preferably, the VPN will be open to external audits, and they won't suffer any significant recent data breaches. You will also want a VPN provider that constantly improves its security posture.

How we test VPNs

Many providers recommended in this list have been subject to in-depth testing and reviews by members of our ZDNET team. We've been talking about other VPNs for years, spoken with their management and their users, and developed a generally favorable impression.

Therefore, our team tested and analyzed the best VPNs for travel in 2024 below using the following criteria that were most important in helping you make an informed decision:

  • Performance:  Our top VPNs must have a minimum level of performance, especially while you're in different countries. After all, there's no point in using a VPN while streaming if your connection continually drops or lags, making it intolerable.
  • Testing: ZDNET tests VPN services from multiple locations, but we can't test from all locations. After all, every home, community, local ISP, and nation has a different infrastructure.
  • Simultaneous connections : Many VPNs limit how many devices you can connect to a service simultaneously. If you have a phone, tablet, laptop, desktop, and possibly even a smart TV you want to connect to a VPN, you'd need a service that allows at least five simultaneous connections.
  • Security : There's no point in using a VPN unless its security protocols and encryption levels are up to scratch. We also ensured that the development team behind each recommended VPN cares about improving security over time and patching reported bugs.
  • Kill switch : A kill switch prevents you from having an unprotected connection and is an essential feature for a VPN. It protects by preventing a return to a default Wi-Fi connection should your internet connection unexpectedly drop.
  • Geoblocks and streaming : VPNs can be vital to accessing local content and services while you're away from home. We ensured that our top recommendations perform well in these factors and are unlikely to slow down your connection while you stream.
  • Countries & servers : How many different countries does the VPN have servers in? This can include physical and virtual servers and whether or not there are enough—at least 50 or so—to provide variety.
  • Trial length & price : Each VPN we recommend has a solid money-back guarantee.

What is a VPN?

A VPN is a  virtual private network  that allows users to browse the internet privately and securely connect to public Wi-Fi networks with a layer of protection that masks data. VPNs allow users to change their virtual location by redirecting the connection through worldwide servers. A VPN will also encrypt your traffic, keeping your online activities hidden from prying eyes.

However, if your online activities are monitored at the ISP level—say, by a government—they may recognize a VPN's "signature." While they can't see the details of what you're doing, they will know that a VPN is in use.

VPNs are useful in unblocking geo-restricted content and can be a vital tool for accessing information in countries with repressive governments. They are essential services for anyone who wants to maintain high safety and privacy online.

What is a travel VPN, and why do I need it?

A travel VPN is a virtual private network that provides a secure internet connection while you travel. It encrypts your online traffic and hides your IP address, protecting sensitive data from cybercriminals and government surveillance. It also allows you to bypass internet censorship and geo-restrictions.

A VPN is useful when relying on public internet hotspots, such as those available at hotels. While you should avoid using public internet hotspots as much as possible for security reasons, a VPN will help protect your privacy if you have no other option.

You may also want a travel-suitable VPN for accessing content geo-linked to your home rather than your new location.

What should I do if I experience traffic slowdowns with a VPN?

If you experience traffic slowdowns, check the VPN and Wi-Fi connection between your device, router, or access point. Sometimes, connectivity issues begin at the source, and in other cases, switching your selected VPN server may be enough to resolve speed problems or connectivity drops.

Will a travel VPN slow down my internet speed?

A VPN might somewhat slow down your internet speed because the data must be encrypted and decrypted before being transmitted. However, a good travel VPN will have minimal impact on your speed, and the added security is worth the small loss in speed.

If you use a public hotspot or hotel connection while you're away, your speed will likely be low at the source and not as rapid as you are used to at home.

Are travel VPNs legal?

Using a VPN is legal in most countries, but some exceptions exist. Some countries, such as China, Russia, and Iran, restrict VPN usage or have banned the use of VPNs entirely. Other countries have some restrictions on VPN usage. It's essential to research the local laws of the country you're traveling to before using a VPN.

How can I find out what the VPN rules are for the countries I'm visiting?

There are several sources. Reaching out to your VPN vendor is always a good idea. They often have a good feel for the countries in which their services operate and will frequently post guidance on their websites.

If you're a US citizen, consider visiting US State Department resources. It lists travel advisories for US citizens, and they have foreign service officials who can provide general guidance. Check the  travel advisories web page . Your nation's foreign ministry may have a similar service if you're outside the United States.

To understand which countries either ban or discourage VPN usage, NordVPN has a legal guide that lists countries with severe restrictions, bans, and possible penalties for breaking VPN laws.

Is a VPN all I need to be protected while traveling?

No. VPNs can generally protect your data while it's in motion. But if your computer or phone is seized (whether or not it's encrypted), it's possible law enforcement can access your data. Some governments might hold your devices for whatever reason they deem helpful.

Online services you access in-country might have less protection than those in your host country. Of course, normal travel security issues, like being careful what you spend, how you handle cash, who you trust, and so on, could also carry risks during travel.

What is a DNS leak and why does it matter?

A DNS leak is the exposure of your information when you are using a VPN, with data -- such as DNS queries -- leaking outside of secure, encrypted tunnels. If your activity is exposed, this compromises the whole point of using a virtual private network in the first place.

The majority of reputable VPNs will ensure that DNS leaks don't happen, but if you can use online services, such as DNS leak test , to check your connection.

If my hotel has a wired connection, do I still need to use a VPN?

Yes. Don't assume any network endpoint is safe when traveling. Always make sure your connections are encrypted when communicating from any network connection.

Can a VPN help me save on airfare?

Many VPN services claim you can save hundreds of dollars on flights by changing your location. Plenty of blog posts with anecdotal evidence support the theory that a VPN can help cut the price of your plane ticket. But the reality is less clear, and the most likely scenario is that no one knows how much (if at all) a VPN can help you score cheap flights.

Airfare prices are set by algorithms based on complicated factors, such as demand. You could notice a price difference using a VPN to spoof your location, but the change in cost may or may not be related to your location. Practically, it isn't easy to account for every possible variable. Also, given the amount of data available to consumers, the real advantage of using a VPN may be that it remains anonymous.

Another way to look at it is if a VPN reduces the cost of airfare, it's most likely not going to have as big of an impact as other factors. There are different tactics for booking cheap flights that should be higher on your priority list. Booking early, keeping an eye out for price drops (check if there are change fees before booking), or traveling during days or times of day when there is less demand are great ways to secure the best possible flight prices.

How do I set up a travel VPN?

To set up a travel VPN, subscribe to a VPN service and download the VPN software for your device. Then, open the software and sign in using your credentials. Choose a server location and connect to the VPN. Once connected, your internet traffic will be encrypted, and your IP address will be hidden.

Remember, you can use a VPN on different devices, including your laptop and smartphone.

Can a VPN make it look like I am in another country?

Yes. You can choose your home country as a default location, but if you would prefer to have an IP assigned from a different country—the US rather than the UK, for example—you will always be able to do so. However, the locations available vary depending on the VPN you are using.
