From the Sallier de La Tour family, La Monaca 2018 Syrah is produced from sustainably grown grapes from the Sicily wine region. Dry, medium-bodied, fruity and fresh with blackberry compote, crushed raspberry, clove and cracked pepper spice flavours vibrant on the palate. Tannins are fine-grained and firm. Drink or hold. The nearby town of Monreale is famous for its magnificent medieval cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also here that the Sallier de La Tour estate winery has been located for over a century.

Syrah food pairings: roast leg of lamb, venison stew, bison burgers.

Aromas of fresh black fruit, soft spices and savoury dried herbs. On the palate you can tell this is a serious wine. Poised and powerful. Even with 15% alcohol it still feels light and fresh. The firm, smooth tannins could use a few more years to soften but is drinking nicely after a 2hr decant. Medium ruby colour. Medium (+) intensity aromas of thyme, cloves, cedar, vanilla, black berry, black cherry, licorice, raspberry, forest floor. Pronounced palate. Full body, high acidity, medium (+) tannin, long finish.

Deep dark ruby. Rich raspberries and cherries, chocolatey and liquorice undertones, and a hint of smoke. Thyme and other spices are present, and a rich palate with round smooth tannins (a bit on the green side) and plenty of acidity to keep it refreshing. Quite a nice match with steaks, would probably benefit from 2-3 years more in the bottle.

Rosso rubino.

Tasca d'Almerita

For years we have been experimenting with Syrah, an international variety thriving in the ideal conditions on our lands. La Monaca is our unique interpretation of this grape variety. The wine takes its name from a hill of the same name, which plays a crucial role in our viticulture because of its rich, natural water sources. The water resources, together with the breeze coming from the Gulf of Castellammare, allow for a consistent and thorough ripening that is reflected in the strong Mediterranean taste of La Monaca wine.

GRANDE VIGNA LA MONACA

sallier de la tour la monaca syrah 2019

AN IDEAL VINEYARD, IDENTIFIED AFTER YEARS OF EXPERIMENTATION

The Vigna La Monaca, two hectares planted in 2011 at an altitude of 320 meters above sea level, has a northeast exposure that provides good light as well as protection from hot summer temperatures. This means that in hotter and drier years the vines suffer less, allowing for consistent ripening. The low vigor, low productivity, and soil characteristics are conducive to a balanced and complete ripening of the grapes, more suitable for full-bodied red wines intended for bottle age. The training system is espalier, with guyot pruning and a density of 4,600 vines per hectare.

sallier de la tour la monaca syrah 2019

COOL SOILS, WHERE SYRAH THRIVES

The Vigna La Monaca is characterized by sandy-textured soil (37.4% sand, 12.5% clay), which is well aerated, very draining, and therefore drier, making the vines less vigorous. The presence of active limestone facilitates the development of aromas and the richness of potassium promotes the accumulation of sugars, aromas, and anthocyanins in the grapes.

Caratteristiche

Spezie, erbe aromatiche, note balsamiche

SALLIER DE LA TOUR

sallier de la tour la monaca syrah 2019

ABOUT THE WINERY

Just outside the bustling epicenter of Palermo in Northwest Sicily lies the Alto Belice - a fascinating landscape and cultural crossroads.   It’s here that the Monte Jato archaeological park preserves important structures dating back to the Magna Graecia settlements.  The nearby town of Monreale is among the most evocative towns of the island and is famous for its magnificent medieval cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.   It’s also here that the Sallier de La Tour winery and estate has been located for over a century.

The Estate has belonged to the Sallier de La Tour family, Princes of Camporeale, since the mid-nineteenth century. Originally from the Piedmont region of Italy, the family moved to Sicily in the 18 th century.  They built the winery—La Monaca—in 1909, its name inspired by the highest hill found on the property, which is located just behind the Estate. In the 1940s, Paolo Sallier de La Tour increased the family’s interest in viticulture with a particular focus on native varietals Nero d’Avola and Inzolia. In 1956, Paolo Sallier de La Tour married Costanza Tasca d’Almerita, joining the two noble families together.

While viticulture had been a function of the estate for many years, Filiberto Sallier de La Tour, Paolo’s son, started experimenting with other varietals, most notably Syrah, which had been cultivated in the region for decades.  During this time, Filiberto also began making the first estate wines under the family’s name, releasing the first commercially produced bottles labelled Sallier de La Tour in the early 2000s.  In 2008, Filiberto approached his cousin, Alberto Tasca, with the idea of joining Sallier de la Tour with the renowned Tasca d’Almerita family of wineries.  Having long been impressed with his cousin’s passion and the family’s deep ties to their land, Alberto agreed, and the two families started a new chapter in the estate’s history.

Today, the Estate is managed by Costanza Chirivino, a member of the Sallier de La Tour family, with the support of the Tasca d’Almerita team.  Costanza's energy and enthusiasm for her family's legacy is infectious, as is her knowledge of and affinity for the region.  In addition to managing the commercial aspects of the Estate, Alberto Tasca also included the Sallier de La Tour in the company’s sustainable initiatives.  This enables and ensures that the entire property is managed according to the tenants of SOStain, a sustainability program that requires third-party certification of the estate’s impact on air, water, soil, and surrounding territory, as well as environmental, economic, and social sustainability.
