Agpay Eco-Tourism Park

The Agpay Eco-Tourism Park is a serene spot that locals and tourists frequent in the town of San Nicolas. From the entrance, visitors will notice the flowing clear water stream lining both sides of the road, indicating the vast and clean waterways of the Agpay Falls. The park is pleasantly shaded thanks in part to the many trees that tower around the vicinity. There are also several areas around the park where visitors can rest and bask in the tranquility of surrounding nature.

MALICO: The Summer Capital of Pangasinan

     Are you looking for a place where invites you to a calm spirit through its natural, picturesque and scenic view? Malico, San Nicolas, Pangasinan is the right place for you. The beautiful place is located at the peak of mountainous parts between Nueva Vizcaya and Pangasinan provinces. Its exact location is in San Nicolas, Pangasinan.

     Malico can be reached by all kinds of light vehicles, motorcycles, and even bicycles. The distance from the town of San Nicolas, Pangasinan to the so called summer capital of Pangasinan, the Malico, is about 19 kilometers. 

     A traveler can have a scenic drive with the 19 kilometer along the Pangasinan-Nueva Vizcaya Road or commonly known as ‘Villa Verde Trail’.

     Along the middle part of 19 kilometers going up to Malico, a traveler can view the major parts of Pangasinan and Tarlac provinces.

     Going up to the village of Malico proper, a traveler may be captivated by the picturesque view that surrounds on the ‘Villa Verde Trail’. This mountainous destination is surrounded by greenly and bluish mountains with fire trees (locally known as Saleng) and various century trees . There are also springs of cold water flowing from high mountains that can be seen besides the road at 5 kilometers before the Malico village proper.  

     Malico village is majority resided by friendly Igorots that claim Malico as their ancestral domain. It is visited by many tourist because of its small community that is rich in cultural heritage and its cold temperature as it sits aproximately1.300 feet above sea level. The temperature with in the village reportedly does not exceed above 20°C.

Built by Filipino, American, and British engineers in 1905, Cape Bolinao Lighthouse is one of the five major lighthouses in the Philippines and is the second-highest of these five, bested only by Ilocos Norte’s Cape Bojeador Lighthouse. Standing atop Punta Piedra Point in Barangay Patar in Bolinao, it guided ships cruising in the West Philippine Sea, until its batteries gave out in 2004. 

The lighthouse may not be working anymore, but it still attracts many visitors to join a Cape Bolinao lighthouse tour , thanks to its unique architecture and the picturesque views that it offers, making it a perfect spot for picture-taking.

The illumination room and the 140-step spiral staircase may be closed to visitors, but with the lighthouse sitting atop a hill with a 72-m elevation, even just standing at the base gives you scenic views of lush greenery and the sparkling ocean. It’s no wonder that this over-a-century old lighthouse has become one of Bolinao’s most enduring and instantly recognizable icons.

The 5.8-ha organic farm is actually both a tourist attraction and training center. While they offer courses and seminars for both new and experienced farmers, there are also several activities for you to try here.

You can go on farm tours, harvest produce to take home, and even learn farm-to-table best practices by picking the ingredients and cooking the food yourself in a Pangasinan culinary tour . They offer a variety of dishes including kalabasa (pumpkin) soup, flower salad (which uses edible organic fresh flowers), tinolang manok (chicken and ginger soup), native pork lechon (roasted suckling pig), and desserts including turonopig, a cross between turon (fried banana rolls) and tupig (roasted rice cake wrapped in banana leaves). Vegetarian options are also available if you’re on a plant-based diet.

Located in Barangay C. Lichauco in Tayug, the Tayug Sunflower Eco Park is a haven for those who can’t get enough of flowers. Like its name suggests, the park is home to thousands of flowers, but they’re not all sunflowers. Here, you can also find beds of marigold, petunia, and celosia, as well as other ornamental plants. There are also different kinds of vegetables in the park, which you can pick and harvest on your own for a fee. 

The main attraction in this park are the sunflowers, which make for amazing photos. The 2-ha park is home to thousands of sunflower blooms and several sunflower mazes, which feature several photo stops, so you won’t have to wait too long to get your turn to snap those pictures.

Best of all, the sunflowers are continuously planted throughout the year, so you can be sure that there will be blooms no matter when you visit. You can even take part of the experience home with you as the eco-park also sells potted and bloomed flowers, including zinnias, torenia, and of course, sunflowers.

Balingasay River in Bolinao is considered the cleanest river in Pangasinan and one of the cleanest in the Philippines. It is a protected area that is home to 15ha of mangroves, some of which are over a century old. The Bolinao local government was given the Philippines Wetlands Conservation award for protecting the mangroves in the river. 

You can swim, bird watch, or even try fishing in the river, but one of the most relaxing ways to take it all in is through a river cruise. The cruise is usually a part of Pangasinan tour packages, but visitors who like moving at their own pace can book it on its own. While the falls are accessible via car and don’t require much walking, the roads going there can be rough, so be prepared for a bumpy ride.

All three falls are breathtaking, but they have varying heights, and the tallest is Bolinao Falls 1. Coupled with its turquoise waters, the falls’ elevation makes it the ideal spot for cliff-diving. Many restaurants along the beach also serve freshly grilled seafood. It’s also the best place for you to sample Lingayen bagoong, a fish paste that the municipality is known for.

Tondol White Sand Beach in the municipality of Anda has been nicknamed “The Little Boracay of the North,” and this monicker has made it one of the most visited beaches near Manila. Like Boracay, one of the top beach destinations in the Philippines, Tondol has long stretches of fine white sand and clear blue waters.

The beach is perfect for families with children, as the shallow parts of the waters stretch out far from the shore. In fact, the waters here are shallow enough that you can walk to the nearby islets, and during low tide, several sandbars will appear.

If you want a more fun experience, you can time your visit when the inflatable water park is set up in the shallow waters of the beach so you can try the slides, tunnels, and other obstacles that it offers.

Tourists on a day trip can rent cottages along the shore, but if you want to stay longer, you can book accommodations at one of the many resorts and bed and breakfasts near the shore.

5. Enchanted Cave

The Enchanted Cave in Bolinao is a good place to cool off if you’re visiting Pangasinan during the summer months. Inside is a pool of clear natural freshwater with an estimated maximum depth of 6ft, making it ideal for a refreshing swim. It is located in a park near Patar Beach.  

It is deemed enchanted because locals believe that millions of years ago, Bolinao was actually underwater. This belief is supported by the presence of coral rocks and fossilized clams in the municipality, many of which you’ll see on your way to the entrance to the cave. The fact that the Enchanted Cave in Bolinao is made of coral limestone also supports this theory. This history makes the cave one-of-a-kind and is one of the reasons why it has become a favorite stop amongst tourists.

Outside the cave, you can also swim in an outdoor pool or enjoy the mini waterfalls inside the park. Those who want to extend their stay can rent cabanas in the park.

Less than 1km away from the Enchanted Cave is Patar Beach, one of the most popular beaches in Bolinao and the whole of Pangasinan. Like many beaches near Manila, this beach is popular for those seeking a quick break from the hustle and bustle of the city. Patar Beach in particular is famous for its long stretch of golden sands and clear blue waters that make for a refreshing swim. If you’re a fan of sunsets, Patar Beach will not disappoint as its location just facing the West Philippine Sea gives it amazing sunset views.

For a day trip, you can rent any of the huts dotted along the beach, but there are also a handful of resorts nearby if you wish to stay longer. You may also camp at the beach and use the public toilets and showers for a fee.

Visitors may also visit the nearby Patar Rock Formation, which will give you breathtaking views of the huge coral cliffs along the coastline.

Cabongaoan Beach is located in the town of Burgos. The trip to the remote beach is not easy and can take up to an hour from the town proper, but once you see its stretch of white sand beach and blue waters, you’ll instantly know that it was worth it.

There are not a lot of accommodations in the vicinity, so it would be best if you plan your trip as early as possible. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also bring a tent and camp at the beach.

In recent years, the beach has become popular among tourists thanks to its Death Pool, a natural pool that requires quite a bit of effort to reach. You’ll need to wear proper footwear as you will have to traverse and climb rock formations with sharp edges. Despite its name, though, the Death Pool is not really dangerous.

Many tourists actually enjoy taking a refreshing dip at the pool. You need to be careful as some of the edges of the pool can be sharp. Its original name was Depth Pool, but some locals started calling it Death Pool, and the intriguing name caught on. 

2. Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag

Pictures of the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag don’t do it justice at all. You might think it’s just like many of the grand churches you can find all over the Philippines, but one of the things that makes this church in Manaoag special is its declaration as a Minor Basilica in 2015. This recognizes the church’s history and architectural value. It is also a canonical affiliate of the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome. 

Built in 1605, the church has seen millions of devotees and thousands of religious folk still make a pilgrimage to Manaoag every year, especially during the Holy Week. The image of Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag, which many Catholics believe to be miraculous, can also be found here. It's also one of the stops when you join a Pangasinan pilgrimage tour . 

You don’t need to be religious to appreciate the beauty of the building and the surrounding areas. The church itself is located on top of a hill, and its facade is very picturesque, while the interior features interesting religious paintings.

The Pangasinan Hundred Island National Park in Alaminos is the top Pangasinan destination for locals and international travelers alike. The protected area boasts of 123 islets scattered across Lingayen Gulf. Each islet is uniquely shaped and believed to have been formed millions of years ago, making the view of them even more special and rare. Some of the islands have white sand beaches, while some feature limestone cliffs.

The area that we now know as San Nicolas was inhabited by settlers even before the establishment of the town itself. Several accounts of Spanish Missionaries confirmed the existence of different groups in the area. The growing population of the settlement attracted the Spanish to establish its presence and embark on several missionaries works to spread Christianity among the locals. The presence of religious missions spurred the development of the settlement as roads were paved to make the area easily accessible to outsiders.

The migration of Ilocano people from nearby towns made it possible for local political and church leaders to initiate the establishment of a pueblo that will be part of Commandancia Politico Militar de Nueva Ecija under the province of Pampanga. The town was ceded to the Province of Pangasinan on May 3, 1817. Several series of events resulted in the re-incorporation of the San Nicolas to Nueva Ecija until its eventual return under Pangasinan’s jurisdiction in 1902.

This agricultural town in the eastern part of the province has vast land areas planted with kawayan or bamboo. The townsfolk convert their produce into home decor, cabinets, furniture, and others. Bamboo poles are also being sold to fishermen for their fishponds and fish pens.

To give honor to its lucrative livelihood, the local government unit launched the Kawayan Festival’ in 2014 which became an annual festivity that coincides with the town’s feast of St. Nicholas, its patron saint.

One thing that makes San Nicolas popular is the breathtaking site of Malico, a mountain village nestled on top of the Caraballo Mountains which can be reached thru land travel in hardly 1.5 hours from the town proper. The rehabilitation of the 22.3-kilometer Pangasinan segment of the Pangasinan-Nueva Vizcaya Road, also known as the Villa Verde trail made Brgy. Malico more accessible to visitors from the province.

Tourist Spots to visit in Pangasinan

P angasinan is a vast province. It’s the largest province of Region 1, after all, in terms of population and land area. The tourism industry in Pangasinan is just barely taking off, and will hopefully become more popular as domestic travel is promoted in a post-COVID-19 world.

When we talk about tourism in Pangasinan, we often think of its famous landmarks: The Our Lady of Manaoag Minor Basilica , the white sand of Patar Beach , and the Hundred Islands for camping and water sports. These landmarks have been mentioned in every tourism article of Pangasinan and are the very words of a traveler who went to Pangasinan.

However, Pangasinan is much more than these three locations. It is vast and wide and offers a variety of tourist attractions that are yet to be heard by the public.

This article is a list of the hidden tourist attractions in the province that may hopefully emerge from hiding in a domestic-traveling post-pandemic new decade.

Daang Kalikasan

It’s only natural that Daang Kalikasan is not yet famous for tourists, considering the fact that it was only completed and opened to the public last January of this year.

Daang Kalikasan eventually took off for inter-province tourism, however. Of course, that’s not impossible since this nature preserve that stretches far and wide into the horizons and mountains offers a scenic and relaxing view for tourists.

As of now, however, there is not much to do at Daang Kalikasan. The only activity to be done is to drive around in a motorcycle/open vehicle, and stop by to take pictures.

It will certainly be for the benefit of the industry to put up tourist activities, such as vehicle renting or a strip of eatery so that tourists will be given more of a reason to visit,

Mt. Zion Pilgrim Mountain

Mt. Zion is a pilgrimage mountain located in the quiet town of Bugallon. It houses a replica of the Christ the Redeemer statue, like the one in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at its peak. Along the way, are Stations of the Cross for praying and repentance during the Lenten Season.

There are other religious statues, like that of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ. There are also some facilities as well, such as a retreat house and other religious establishments.

Mt. Zion is not meant to be a tourist attraction, and is, therefore, not developed to be one. Personally, I’d like Mt. Zion to remain as it is, with only the addition of few necessities such as proper comfort rooms and a resting area.

Lingayen Baywalk

The Lingayen Baywalk is a government project that cemented a stretch of the Lingayen Gulf. It is so long that it reaches to the nearby town of Binmaley’s own beach as well./

While certainly a popular place to unwind and relax with the family, the Lingayen Baywalk isn’t talked about as much when it comes to other tourists from outside provinces.

It’s certainly worth a visit, as it offers a time to enjoy the beach and paddle across the waters. The sun is strong at noon, but you can witness a beautiful, picturesque sunset just before 6PM in the evening.

There are occasional places to visit nearby, such as the yearly Pangasinan Trade Fair and Expo. The town concert is held nearby, too. But Capitol and the Veterans Park are always free to be visited all-year round.

I think it would be far more beneficial than disadvantageous to develop Lingayen Baywalk to be geared more to tourists. Maybe reinforce the bike rental systems and that of 4×4 vehicles. The street food strip could also benefit if it was made permanent and organized.

There is a secret area of the Lingayen Baywalk that I, and a couple of my local friends, have discovered. It is on the farthest end of the baywalk, where it starts. The pavement is low, and if you lower your foot, it will reach the waters. I love coming there at sunrise or sunset, where the sun reflects off the shallow waters.

Those were the hidden tourist destinations in Pangasinan that are yet to become tourism landmarks. It certainly will be a great opportunity to visit these locations before they are expected to gain popularity, as a predicted effect of post-pandemic travels.

San Nicolas , Province of Pangasinan

San Nicolas is a landlocked municipality in the coastal province of Pangasinan .

The municipality has a land area of 210.20 square kilometers or 81.16 square miles which constitutes 3.86% of Pangasinan's total area. Its population as determined by the 2020 Census was 39,778. This represented 1.26% of the total population of Pangasinan province, or 0.75% of the overall population of the Ilocos Region . Based on these figures, the population density is computed at 189 inhabitants per square kilometer or 490 inhabitants per square mile.

San Nicolas has 33 barangays as shown in the following table.

The annual regular revenue of San Nicolas for the fiscal year of 2016 was ₱ 120,482,854.87.

Demographics

The household population of San Nicolas in the 2015 Census was 35,547 broken down into 8,277 households or an average of 4.29 members per household.

Population by age group

According to the 2015 Census, the age group with the highest population in San Nicolas is 5 to 9 , with 3,546 individuals. Conversely, the age group with the lowest population is 80 and over , with 492 individuals.

Historical population

The population of San Nicolas grew from 9,780 in 1903 to 39,778 in 2020, an increase of 29,998 people over the course of 117 years. The latest census figures in 2020 denote a positive growth rate of 2.38%, or an increase of 4,204 people, from the previous population of 35,574 in 2015.

The total number of registered voters or electorate in San Nicolas for the year 2019 was 26,109, broken down into 12,979 males and 13,130 females.

The municipal center of San Nicolas is situated at approximately 16° 4' North, 120° 46' East, in the island of Luzon . Elevation at these coordinates is estimated at 87.1 meters or 285.7 feet above mean sea level.
