Sa Pa (formerly Chapa ) is a town in a beautiful, mountainous region of northern Vietnam on the border with China . The town has a population of 9,400 (2019), while Sapa district, covering 677 km², has 82,000 people 2018).

At 1,650 m above sea level in Vietnam's remote northwest mountains, Sa Pa is known for its fine, rugged scenery and for its cultural diversity.

Although the cable car and the host of large hotels built without regard for the mountain environment have reduced the charm of Sapa, a short walk or drive will still reward the visitor with unspoiled views.

Understand [ edit ]

Sa Pa is a picturesque town in the Hoang Lien Son mountain range near the Chinese border in northwestern Vietnam, known as "the Tonkinese Alps". Sa Pa and its surrounding region is host to many hill tribes, as well as rice terraces, lush vegetation, and Phan Si Păng (Fansipan), the highest peak in Indochina (Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam). Other great mountains like Aurora & J, where Sa Pa sees the first rays of sun, make up a very steep valley.

Sa Pa has become a tourist hotspot where money is the new drug of choice. Throngs of vendors can be found in the streets, selling their wares. Don't be put off by the rush, your explorations of the surrounding countryside will be worth the trouble.

Ethnic minorities [ edit ]

Many ethnic minorities live in and around Sa Pa. Excluding the ethnic Vietnamese Kinh people, eight ethnic minority groups are found in Sa Pa: H'mong (pronounced mong ), Dao (pronounced yao ), Tay, Giay (pronounced zai ), Muong, Thai, Hoa (ethnic Chinese), and Xa Pho (a sub-set of the Phu La minority group). However, the last four groups comprise fewer than 500 people in total. The population of the district was estimated at 31,652 (1993) of which 52% were H'mong, 25% were Dao, 15% were Kinh, 5% were Tay, and 2% were Giay. Around 3,300 people live in Sa Pa town, while the remainder are peasant farmers distributed unevenly throughout the district.

Many older women in particular make items such as ethnic clothing and blankets to sell to tourists. Striking up a conversation with them can be very rewarding and their spoken English is impressive. Doing this in Sa Pa town will sometimes lead to a scrum if other vendors smell a potential sale.

Children from these ethnic minorities often help support their families financially through selling trinkets to tourists. They peddle small metal or silver trinkets, embroidered pillow cases and friendship bands in the main town, and often walk for several hours from their villages to reach town, perhaps skipping school. At the end of the day, some take a motorbike ride back to their village, some walk home and some sleep in the market. Do not encourage this by buying from children. Buy from adults.

Girls and boys marry young (around 15–18) and often have two children by the time they are 20 years old. Poverty has led to a lot of girls leaving their villages each day to go selling in Sa Pa town, and depending on their luck, may only have one meal per day.

Weather [ edit ]

In winter (the four months from November to February), the weather in Sa Pa is invariably cold, wet and foggy (temperatures can drop to freezing and there was snow in 2011). Travellers have rolled into town on a gloriously clear day and then spent a week trapped in impenetrable fog. When it is like this there really isn't very much to do. Also the rice paddies are brown and empty (they are planted in spring), the paths very muddy and slippery and the glorious vistas of summer are completely hidden in the mist. If you choose to visit in winter, take along warm clothes or prepare to be cold and miserable as many hotels do not have efficient heating in their rooms. During that time, the more upmarket hotels that do have heating fill up quickly, so make advance reservations if you can afford not to freeze.

It rains often in August, especially in the mornings.

However, if you visit in summer, say in May, then be prepared to sweat. Hostels may not have air-conditioning so check them out first before making your booking. If you have come to see the rice terraces, you will be disappointed as you would not be seeing beautiful, green rice terraces as the local farmers would have just started to work on the field.

By plane [ edit ]

An airport finally started construction in 2022 but is still many years from completion. For time being, the closest airport is Hanoi .

Dien Bien Phu has a small airport that may appear closer on a map, but due to terrible roads is nearly 9 hours away, almost twice the time from Hanoi.

By train [ edit ]

Sa Pa is reached by a nine-hour train journey from Hanoi to Lào Cai (pronounced lao kai ), followed by a separate transfer to Sa Pa .

Vietnam Rail operates some of the carriages in the train, but others are operated by private companies (Fanxipan Express, Friendly, Ratraco, Tulico, Victoria Hotels, and many others). Whilst in the past some of these cars were significantly nicer than the standard carriages, they are now almost exclusively Vietnam Railways carriages, just more expensive and easier to reserve in advance. You're not even guaranteed to share your carriage with other tourists if that's a concern, as any spare tickets are sold as Vietnam Railways tickets. You may need to arrange with a travel agency to get tickets on these tourist carriages, but anybody can purchase tickets for the Vietnam Rail carriages at the Hanoi train station.

You can buy rail tickets online (or here ). Print out your tickets or show your phone at the station.

Prices vary according to the type of seat purchased, and the season during which you are traveling. Dates around Vietnamese holidays are particularly expensive and tickets cannot be assumed available for same day travel, so book ahead if possible. Travelers are strongly recommended to purchase a berth in a soft or hard sleeper carriages, though the trip in soft-seat class is not intolerable.

  • Cheaper travel . Cheaper tickets, especially in hard sleeper class, can be difficult to come by at times, as tour companies and travel agents will snap up these to foist on their own customers (too frequently a promised soft sleeper berth will turn into a hard sleeper when it comes time to board). To avoid ripoffs, it is better to go to the train station yourself and get the ticket from the ticket office. This is the only way to make sure that you will get what you have paid for. Although one cannot be assured of finding a place, it is often possible to arrive at the station a short while before boarding time, as there are usually young men hanging around trying to hawk unfilled berths at the last minute. The price of these tickets will fall dramatically as departure time draws near.
  • More expensive travel . For a bed in a hard or soft sleeper carriage, expect to pay in the area of 430,000–525,000 dong one way. For a soft seat, expect to pay 220,000 dong one way (May 2012). Tickets can be booked online from a travel agent such as Vietnam Impressive . You will be emailed a voucher which must be printed out and presented to a train company representative at the station about 30–60 minutes before the departure time to obtain the actual tickets.

You should book a return ticket when you buy your outward journey, as picking up tickets in Lào Cai is harder than in Hanoi. The staff do not speak as much English, and they possibly only sell tickets for travel on the same day, so sleepers may already be sold out unless you go first thing in the morning. Pay attention to the time of your return train. Trains leaving Lào Cai around 20:00 will arrive in Hanoi at around 05:00. If you are planning to stay in a hotel or hostel that does not have a 24-hour reception and do not make prior arrangements when you return to Hanoi at an early hour, you may find yourself sitting outside your hotel waiting a few hours for the reception desk to open.

Transfer between Lào Cai and Sa Pa [ edit ]

The train terminates at Lào Cai . The hotel where you are planning to stay will often be able to arrange minibus transportation between Lào Cai and Sa Pa for you for about 50,000 dong (February 2012). If you're looking to pay less, you'll have to walk to the central park area in Lào Cai in front of the railway station where minibuses and vans cruise for passengers and are willing to bargain to as low as 35,000 dong (off-season, May 2017). Getting on an empty or half-empty bus will mean waiting for more passengers, regardless of whatever departure time is promised by the driver and his ever-present crew of buddies who are hanging around.

The cheapest option is to use the public bus to Sapa, which runs regularly starting from 07:00 and costs no more than 30,000 dong. Cross the parking lot to the street and you will see the bus stop there. The ride is OK, but beware of motion sickness due to the curvy roads.

The ride is about an hour of beautiful views if the weather is good, otherwise it may be an hour of fog, more than 1,000 m up into the mountains.

If you are planning to visit the Bắc Hà Sunday market , it is worth planning your travel so that you arrive in or leave from Lào Cai on a Sunday, as Bắc Hà is nearer to Lào Cai than Sa Pa. The Bắc Hà Sunday market (much larger than the market in Sa Pa) is a big, colorful bazaar overflowing with everything under the sun, including handicrafts by minority tribes, apparel and accessories, meat and vegetables, and household goods. Your hotel in Sa Pa may be able to arrange for someone to meet you at the Lào Cai train station and put you on a tour (USD15 in October 2013) that will take you to the Bắc Hà Sunday market; a village inhabited by the Flower H'mong; and the border between Lào Cai and Hekou , a small town in Yunnan , China ; and then bring you to Sa Pa (or the reverse if you are leaving Sa Pa and catching the train from Lào Cai).

By bus [ edit ]

A toll expressway between Hanoi and Lao Cai reduces the time for the trip from over 10 hours to about 5 hours by car (even 3.5 hours with private car); buses using that expressway are the fastest way to get from Hanoi to Sapa.

Daytime buses: the Sapa Express (with 2+1 seating) and Good Morning Sapa buses fairly reliably take around 6 hours including one or two 30-minute stops. There are 2 departure times from Hanoi: 07:00 and 15:00. From Sapa, the bus leaves around 13:30-15:30. Both charge USD13-17 one way (Dec 2019).

Sleeper buses run direct from Hanoi to Sapa [dead link] both day and night for around USD13–20. Ask at the local tourist office, a reputable tour agency, or your hotel or hostel regarding tickets. These buses are reasonably modern, the beds are very small and recline back, typically in three single or two double rows. The bus will make stops for bathroom breaks and snacks, and once in Lào Cai city. If you are a light sleeper the journey could be uncomfortable with many sharp twists and turns, and some claim that the mountain roads are dangerous, although there is no evidence of accidents on the route. The bus stop is near the lake area.

Travelers have reported that when journeying back to Hanoi from Sa Pa, bus drivers sometimes drop passengers in the western outskirts of Hanoi, despite assurances that they will be transported to the airport or the Hanoi train station. Should you find yourself in this situation, there is a bus station around the block called Xe Ben Khach My Dien, where you can get on Bus 34 towards the Hanoi city centre for 3,000 dong. Taxis will quote you 200,000 dong to take you to the Old Town.

Tickets can also be purchased at Hanoi Sapa tickets online and paid for using Paypal or card.

By motorcycle [ edit ]

Get around [ edit ].

Anywhere in the main village of Sa Pa can be reached on foot, although the hilly terrain will be tiring for older tourists, and the town is small enough that you're not likely to get lost. A basic map will be good enough for most visitors.

Mopeds can be rented in the touristy parts of town, as well as near the gas station on the road leading to Lào Cai, for USD3–6 depending on the amount of time you wish to rent for and your bargaining skills ( i.e. , determination). Day trips into the surrounding countryside can be very rewarding, although a good up-to-date map and a healthy dose of caution are required as roads are winding and populated with all manner of conveyance, and road signs can be misleading as the north undergoes some odd town-relocation schemes. See also Vietnam by motorcycle .

Tourists intending to trek to the various villages through the paddy fields should be prepared with good trekking shoes or rubber boots, a walking stick and extra clothing kept in a waterproof bag. Hotels often have gumboots and ponchos to lend to their guests, and such equipment can also be rented or purchased from shops in the town. Depending on the season, the rice fields, which are built in terraces, can be slightly steep, and very muddy and slippery. Not wearing shoes with good grips risks slipping, and even sliding down the slopes. As the paths are also taken by water buffalo, excrement can be found everywhere. Walking sticks can be bought from children from the ethnic minority groups for about 5,000 dong. These enterprising children cut sturdy bamboo and sharpen one end to turn them into sturdy sticks.

For the less adventurous, some of the villages such as Lao Chai and Ta Van are accessible via 4WD, motorcycle or van.

The easiest way to travel in Sa Pa without your own vehicle is by taxi or motor taxi. The local government publicized the price for every company's service, though it is subject to change over time. Taxi in Fanxipan-Sapa: ☏ +84 20 362 6262 . Taxi Xanh-Sapa: ☏ +84 20 363 6363 .

Free; donations welcome .

  • Sa Pa Culture Museum ( behind the Tourist Office ). Daily 07:30–11:30, 13:30–17:00 . If you have time, the museum is worth visiting to learn about the history of Sa Pa, and the costumes and traditions of the ethnic minorities of the region. Free; donations welcome .

Do [ edit ]

If you do not intend to hike in the countryside around Sa Pa on your own, you can join a tour or arrange a private guide who will take you to visit the sights. Your hotel should be able to assist. If you do not feel up to hiking all the way, arrange to hike out of Sa Pa and return by Jeep, minibus or motorcycle, or pick a tour that provides transportation all the way.

Admission fees are required to visit most of the villages. As of 2017 there appears to be a single entrance fee of 75,000 dong covering all villages. However, some may still charge an extra or separate fee. By far the most popular and touristy tour visits two villages near Sa Pa, Lao Chải and Tả Van , including a lunch stop (admission fee: 40,000 dong in August 2012). It is possible to get a taxi from Sapa to Lao Chai, trek the 3.5 km to the bridge in Ta Van and have the taxi pick you up there. Some very unpleasant Hmong women may try to attach themselves to you in quite large numbers in Lao Chai and (speaking excellent English) try to aggressively persuade you to let them be your guide. They may even tell you to 'go back to your country' if you refuse their services. There is absolutely no need for guides and the wonderful trek through the countryside is best accomplished in peace and quiet. It can be very difficult to shake these women off, but buying something from someone not in their group should give them the message that you are not against the Hmong people, just against their pushy-ness.

Tả Giàng Phình and Bản Khoang are less touristy but much further away from Sa Pa. Other villages worth visiting include Sín Chải (20,000 dong in August 2012), and Má Tra and Ta Phìn (30,000 dong in August 2012 for both). On these treks, you can get a taste of the locals' way of life. You can spot their farms for rice, corn, beans, cabbage, spinach and sweet potato, and farm animals including buffaloes, ducks and pigs. There are also breathtaking views of the farm terraces along these treks.

As Sapa grows, overnight tours staying outside the town are becoming increasingly popular. The popular trek to Ta Van forms the first day of many of these tours, with an overnight at a homestay in the village. Indeed, the business is such that it now supports three bars in the village of Ta Van. Tours can be booked through travel agents in Hanoi, directly through operators such as Sapa Sisters and no doubt through many hotels in Sapa.

  • Walking down you will see a few cottage industries like weaving, carving, and art shops. You will walk by some mud-walled houses and the local shaman's house. In the middle of the trek, you come to a rest stop, with a so-so waterfall, and a supposedly minority village which is a block of dwellings with no sign of any activity. You will also spot water-mills and bridges made out of bamboo, as well as some swings. At the end, you will cross the Cát Cát bridge.
  • Overall, it makes for a nice stroll if you have a morning or afternoon free. Persons of limited mobility should skip this hike due to the large step-climbing involved.
  • There is a path that continues on in the valley, towards Lao Chải and Tả Van. Much fewer tourists, and great views on the rice terraces.
  • Hoàng Liên National Park, Love Waterfall and Silver Waterfall ( Thác Tình Yêu; Thác Bạc ) ( 30-min drive from Sa Pa ). Love Waterfall (Thác Tình Yêu), which lies within Hoàng Liên National Park (Vườn quốc gia Hoàng Liên; declared an ASEAN Heritage Park ). It takes 30 minutes to walk from the entrance of the park to the waterfall. The path is paved with flat but slightly uneven stones and has many steps going up and down. there are many shaded areas for rest along the way. Silver Waterfall (Thác Bạc), regarded by some travellers as less picturesque than Love Waterfall, is alongside the road between Sa Pa and the entrance to Hoàng Liên National Park. You have to take a few hundred steps up to see the waterfall. Hoàng Liên National Park: 70,000 dong; Silver Waterfall: 20,000 dong . ( updated May 2017 )
  • Massage . Numerous shops along Cầu Mây Street, the town's main street, provide foot and body massages. Many hotels also offer in-room massages.
  • 22.303333 103.775 1 Phan Si Păng ( Fansipan ). At 3,143 m (10,312 ft), Phan Si Păng or Fansipan is the highest mountain in Indochina (Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam), and lies within the Hoàng Liên National Park (Vườn quốc gia Hoàng Liên). Hikes to the summit lasting from 1-3 days can be arranged from tour companies in Sa Pa. Most of them recommend taking the 2- or 3-day options; few guides will take tourists on the round trip in a single day. A very small village offering accommodation and food is around 1,500 m (4,920 ft), and there is an overnight camp at 2,800 m (9,190 ft). Most booked trips will include the use of these facilities in their price should they be required. You should be fairly fit to attempt the ascent. 150,000 dong . ( updated Aug 2012 )
  • Fansipan Legend ( Fansipan Cable Car ). The cable car up Fansipan offering a rather less strenuous route up the tallest mountain in Indochina. The views are often obscured by the fog. 750,000 dong, 550,000 dong for children between 1 and 1.4 m; 100,000 dong for the funicular from Sapa Town (Hotel Coupole) to the Moang Hoa cable car station; 70,000 dong for the funicular from the cable car to the peak . ( updated Mar 2020 )
  • Sa Pa Lake ( 5 min walk from the church ). The lake is within walking distance of the city center. At the lake you can rent a pedal boat for 40,000 dong for 30 minutes, or 80,000 dong for an hour. Pedal boats are available only on weekends and when the weather is good. ( updated May 2017 )

Buy [ edit ]

  • Simacai Market . Of all Sa Pa markets, Simacai Market may well best demonstrate traditional customs and habits which have not been affected by tourist commercialization.
  • Handicrafts and other tourist trinkets . The usual endless supply of nearly identical tourist trinkets is available at every turn. Sa Pa is famous for its embroidery . Clothes, blankets, wall hangings and other fabric handicrafts with colourful embroidered designs traditional to the various ethnic minorities in Sa Pa can be purchased from markets and from ethnic-minority hawkers at villages visited by tourists. The indigo dye used to give a deep blue color stains the fingers, which is why many of the women who make them have darkened fingertips. When you wash these clothes the colour will run. To avoid this, soak them in cold salty water, and pack them carefully in your bag to take home.

There are two types of handicrafts: handmade and machine-made. It is easy to tell the difference. If you wish to buy handmade items, it is preferable to buy directly from their makers in the villages. Prices are highly elastic. When bargaining, try to find out how long it took to make the piece. If you do not mind machine-made products, you are better off buying them in the shops in town. It pays to shop around for the right pair of reproduction Montagnard earrings or machine-made fabric items.

Do buy some items, whether handmade or not, direct from ethnic minority sellers, especially if you have enjoyed a good conversation or received help from them. Though they do charge slightly more than shops, bear in mind that the majority of them are very poor and depend on tourist money to survive. However, it is suggested that you avoid buying items from children (see " Ethnic minorities " above).

  • Sports and winter wear . A number of shops in town sell sports and winter wear such as waterproof jackets and hiking boots. Although they bear the logos of well-known international brands, given their low cost it is unlikely that they are original products.
  • Batteries . Be careful when buying batteries as some people will sell dead ones. If you're really worried about this, just drop them on a hard surface. If they bounce they are empty or partially empty.

What to buy [ edit ]

Souvenir shops sell brocade, golden handicrafts, silver handicrafts, wooden handicrafts.

All products are made by local residents. That would be more exciting as walking into villages outside town and buying souvenir by local ethnics. The local government recommends tourists do not buy products from children as it discourages them from attending school.

Sleep [ edit ]

There is a near oversupply of cheap rooms in the touristy area down the hill from the town centre, and generally a flock of young men and women will leap on you the moment you arrive with offers from USD3 and up for a double room.

In addition to the places listed below, homestays in some of the villages surrounding Sa Pa are available.

In Sa Pa, as in many other provinces of Vietnam, it is the law that you must supply your passport to your hostel, hotel or guesthouse to register your personal information. However, a photocopy of the main page and visa should suffice, and if they refuse, tell them your passport is in Hanoi because you are applying for a visa extension.

As of March 2020, there is a lot of construction in Sa Pa, with attendant noise and dust. Most seem to be on southwest side of town (on the down-slope with view of Fansipan Mountain) but north edge of town can also be impacted. To avoid construction zones, if possible, check on location before choosing your lodgings, or try to find very recent photo of hotel environments.

  • Cash . It is possible to change money and travellers' cheques, and get cash advances on credit cards, at the bigger hotels in Sa Pa. There are ATMs on the main street. There have been reports of shops taking customers' crisp notes, switching them with cut and taped-up ones, and insisting that were the ones the customers gave them.
  • Photography . Some of the minorities do not wish to be photographed. Ask permission beforehand. Most will overcome their reluctance to be photographed once money is produced.

  • Most people will head back to Hanoi and then on to other routes
  • For those looking to go farther afield, the road to Dien Bien Phu is simply stunning and makes for a fantastic four-to-five-day trip. Always give yourself plenty of daylight hours to return home, however, as highly changeable weather could strand you in dense fog without notice, especially during the winter months. There are buses to Dien Bien Phu which run from the tourist office each day (day bus: 07:30, night bus: 18:30), the trip is 300 km, about 10 hours, and costs USD11 (Dec 2019). It is also the last big city before the Laos border (for those heading to Luang Prabang for example).

Sapa Attractions

Sapa is one of the top attractions in Northern Vietnam. This charming town was built as a hill station by the French in 1920. Its original name was “Sa Pả” in H’mong language, meaning “Land”. When French came, they wrote “Chapa” because “S” is pronounced almost as same as “Ch” in French, “Sh” in English.

Located approximately 1500 meters above the sea, Sapa carries moderate and rainy weather in the summer, while being cold and occasionally snowy during the winter. Surrounded by dramatic gorges and stepped rice terraces, the landscapes around Sapa are some of northern Vietnam’s most striking. Once you’ve stepped out into the lush fields, you’ll understand the Sapa area’s real charm.

Sapa is home of more than a dozen hill tribes people, making it the most culturally diverse area in the country. There are five main groups living throughout the valleys of Sapa: Hmong, Yao, Zay, Tay and Xa Pho people. Surrounded by mountains and valleys; Sapa is a popular trekking base in Vietnam with spectacular landscapes.

Travel consultants at Vietnam Travel can design a day tour or a couple days packages for you and your family. Below are the top 15 attractions you should visit in Sapa.

Ta Phin Village

Red Dao people living there still keep strong customs: arranged weddings where the price of the bride can still reach a decent amount of old Indochina silver piasters; the use of roots and plants to dye silk threads in bright yellow or dark orange; harvesting medicinal plants in the jungle in order to make their traditional herbal bath. The most distinguishing feature of the Red Dao is their large red headdress worn by the woman (younger girls wear a smaller version).

Hmong people usually live in smaller houses and grow hemp and indigo plants. They turn these plants into stunning pieces of clothing and souvenirs for the village visitors. Ta Phin is a great place for trekking. Travel to Ta Phin, you will meet locals working on the rice field, see traditional house, visit caves and enjoy traditional medicine bath.

Sapa in June, when rice is still green

Located 6km from Sapa town, Lao Chai is home to Black H’mong people. It is also the beginning of Muong Hoa valley. This village is covered with large terraces so you can go trekking through terrace fields and streams, enjoy fresh air and know more about the culture of the Black Hmong ethnic.

Not only enjoying the beauty of terraced fields, visitors to Lao Chai village also have the opportunity to explore the daily life of the ethnic people in the village. Although there have been some more modern items, the people here still keep their traditional farming lifestyles. They still raise pigs, plant cotton, weave brocade, and cultivate rice on terraced fields like previous generations.

Entering the houses of H’mong people here, you can see their living space is decorated with brocades on the door, on the table and on the floor. Some houses still have old horns, or wooden bells for buffalo neck … Almost their living space has not changed after decades of living here.

In particular, visitors to Lao Chai village can also enjoy special dishes made from the materials they grow. Imagine in the chilly space of the Sapa mountains, it is great to enjoy some smoke buffalo meat with corn wine.

Entrance fee: (to Y Linh Ho, Lao Chai & Ta Van) – 75,000VNĐ/person

Ta Van Village

Next to Lao Chai Village is Ta Van Village. Ta Van village is home to the Giay people, one of Sapa’s ethnic minorities. Located close to Sapa town (about 12km) and surrounded by beautiful scenery, Ta Van village makes it the perfect trekking destination. The pace is slow here, food is delicious, locals are curious and friendly, and homestay options plentiful.

There are a couple of routes you can take through the woods and rice fields. Most of them are straight forward loops around Ta Van village but the paths can get muddy and slippery during the wet season. Before you go, pack some snacks and plenty of water, there aren’t any shops along the way until you cross the suspension bridge back into the village. Also, wear good walking boots, grab a pair of bamboo sticks to help you trek through the sloping bits of the hike and pack a waterproof jacket. The mist and rain, especially during the wet season, will be your constant companions alongside the curious locals.

The major work of the Giay is growing rice. Besides, they also produce instruments and engraved silver. They live in both stilted houses and common houses with a solemn central part which is served as a place for ancestor altar and guest reception. Costumes of the Giay are simple: women with short dress, wearing cloth bag with embroidered flowers; man also wears pants and shirt. Coming here, visitors can enjoy some special dishes of ethnic Giay such as: roast fish of Muong Hum, horse meat of Muong Khuong, sticky rice of Van Ban… and enjoy festivals, folk games of the Giay: Nao Cong, Roong Pooc…

Staying with the local families will be one of the most unique experiences in Ta Van Village. The tribal communities in the village are friendly and accommodating and they cook up some delicious food!

Y Linh Ho Village

This beautiful village is located right by the Muong Hoa River about 7 km southwest of Sapa town. It is one of the most visited destinations among tourists and well known for homestay accommodations. Y Linh Ho village is mostly inhabited by Black H’mong hill tribes and they live in their wooden and bamboo houses.

Y Linh Ho is a small commune composed by a dozens of small hamlets scattering on the very tough mountain terrain with high and steep mountains. According to the elders in the village, the name of Y Linh Ho was named under the name of Mr. Ly Linh Ho – the first man who set up the village. It is said that several Dao people led by Mr. Ly Linh Ho reclaimed the area surrounding Y Linh Ho Village. After a long time of living and building, a new village of Dao people was formed and called Y Linh Ho.

After a period of time, the Dao people in Y Linh Ho started to migrate and the Mong people arrived in the village but the name of Y Linh Ho was still the name of the village to commemorate the person who built the village today.

The location of Y Linh Ho Village is far from the main road. Therefore, you need to pass a quite long, far and winding road to reach it. However, thanks to the isolated location, the village is rather tranquil and peaceful.

The most popular trekking tour is a tour that combines 3 villages: Y Linh Ho, Lao Chai and Ta Van. Please contact our travel consultant at Vietnam Travel to have a better advice.

Cat Cat Village

Cat Cat village lies at the bottom of the Muong Hoa Valley where H’mong people live. This village was formed in the 19th century, after various ethnic H’Mong and Dzao families came together to settle here. They started cultivating rice and corn in the region, as well as weaving fabric and creating handicrafts.

Cat Cat Village is famous for its breathtaking scenery, waterfalls, water mills, and rice terraces in the surrounding areas. Located only 3 km away from Sapa, Cat Cat village is a perfect stop on your trekking route through Sapa as it offers breathtaking views: rice terraces, waterfalls, water mills, and streams.

Traditional houses of H’Mong people in Cat Cat have three rooms with three doors and covered with Po mu wood roof. In the house there are three columns that stand in round or square stones. The walls are made from sawn timber. The main door is always closed and only opens for important events.

Trekking through this village, you will see women stitching colorful pieces of brocade while children play around with pets or even livestock that are temporary pets. They collect hemp, cotton, and linen from the forest to use as material for clothes, and the silk from silkworms is used for embroidery. The colors are also made naturally—yellow from turmeric, black from a local leaf, red and brown from the rind of local leaves, and blue from indigo leaves. Cat Cat is known for its indigo dyeing technique that you can experience when you are here. Many people here are also skilled at creating gold and silver jewelry.

Sapa: Your Essential Guide + How to Ditch the Crowds [2024]

What to see, how to get there and how to ditch the crowds.

Sapa: Your Essential Guide + How to Ditch the Crowds [2024]

Sapa is Vietnam's most popular spot (other than Halong Bay!) for a reason – stunning views, easy for all ages, and most locals speak English. It's crowded but we still think it's worth a visit for its unique mix of nature, hill tribe communities, and social impact.

Is Sapa Worth Visiting?

Come to Sapa for iconic rice paddy views, lovely local culture and if you don't mind the crowds!

Sapa's a must-visit if you want breathtaking rice paddies, easygoing hikes, and a chance to experience Vietnam's diverse ethnic groups. Be prepared for crowds though, as it's a popular backpacker spot.

What makes Sapa truly special to us is how it empowers local women. Traditionally in the H'mong hill tribe, women were homemakers, but tourism has flipped that! Women here are your guides and shopkeepers, breaking traditional roles and gaining a stronger voice in their community. Just by visiting Sapa, you are giving local women a voice in a predominantly patriarchal society!

Getting There

Most people take a bus (left) or a train (right) from Hanoi to Sapa. The seats recline so you can sleep well!

The closest international airport to Sapa is in Hanoi. You can reach Sapa from Hanoi by various means , with the most common options being sleeper buses and trains.

  • Bus: To get from Hanoi to Sapa, many travelers choose the overnight sleeper bus , which takes about 6-7 hours and costs around $10 USD for a one-way ticket. These buses are quite comfortable for sleeping, and many of them have reclining chairs . Most people take the 10 pm bus from Hanoi, arriving in Sapa Town around 4 am. You're allowed to stay on the bus until about 6 am, which is perfect timing because many trekking tours start around 7 or 8 am!
  • Train: For a more comfortable journey with a better night's sleep, we'd recommend the night train. All the train companies basically operate different cabins on the same train. So although you're booking with different train companies, you'll actually be on the same train. Take Chapa Express for a more premium experience. The night train departs from Hanoi train station at 10 pm, arriving at Lao Cai train station, where you'll then hop on a shuttle bus to reach Sapa Town by 7 am. This option allows you to maximize your time and start exploring as soon as you arrive.
  • Private car : If you're looking for a private journey, you can also take a car. It's 5.5 hours each way to get to Sapa, and you can also make it a road trip and visit other places along the way!

Best Time to Go

  • Best: Our favourite time to visit Sapa is during autumn in September and October, because that’s when the rice fields turn a beautiful golden yellow and farmers begin harvesting. The weather during this period is also great for trekking.
  • Good but Touristy: If you want green, go to Sapa in June when the rice fields turn an amazing lush green colour. But this is also the busiest period with lots of domestic travellers. Summer is also the rainy season, so be prepared for sudden storms.
  • Avoid: If you want to do a homestay, avoid winter in Sapa (December - January) as it gets very foggy and cold. The homestays are very basic with no heating, so it may not be the most comfortable!

Things to Do in Sapa

1. hike iconic rice terraces.

The most popular thing to do is hike rice terraces

You can explore Sapa's rice paddies with a one-day tour from Sapa town, or opt for a deeper experience with a 2-3 day trek and homestay. Treks offer stunning scenery – rice terraces, waterfalls, bamboo forests – and a chance to connect with local ethnic communities.

While the scenery is beautiful, it's the heartfelt interactions with the hill tribes that make Sapa trekking truly special. It's a simpler way of life, and full of heart.

  • Be aware that day tours can be mega-touristy, often visiting the same spots like Cat Cat village. To experience the rice fields in a more authentic way, consider a homestay or a private day trek where you can request quieter routes.
  • Support local social enterprises by choosing trekking companies that empower local communities and offer a more responsible tourism experience.

2. Enjoy a Local Homestay

Staying in a homestay allows you to really immerse in the gorgeous surrounding and enjoy the heartfelt hospitality of the locals.

We’d highly recommend spending at least a night in a homestay because it’s the best way to experience Sapa. Not only will you get to explore more hidden routes, you’ll also get to enjoy home-cooked meals and really get to immerse in the warm hospitality of Sapa.

We’d go as far to say that you haven’t really experienced Sapa unless you’ve done a homestay, because that’s by far the best bit of Sapa!

3. See the Hidden Sapa that No One Knows

Going to Sin Suoi Ho is like stepping back in time to Sapa before mass tourism.

If you're looking for the real Sapa, this is it. Just a short drive from the tourist crowds of Sapa town, Sin Suoi Ho offers equally stunning views, a powerful story of resilience, and a peaceful, uncrowded atmosphere. Sin Suoi Ho feels untouched by time, offering the Sapa experience of years ago – pristine rice terraces, cascading waterfalls, and peaceful village life. But beyond its beauty, this village has a remarkable story. Once struggling with opium addiction, Sin Suoi Ho chose a different path. Through determination and a shift towards sustainable agriculture and tourism, the village has built a brighter future. Guesthouses are cozy and clean, and while a bit further than Sapa, Sin Suoi Ho rewards visitors with a truly authentic experience and a chance to support a community that overcame hardship. Your homestay can likely arrange transport from Sapa Town.

4. Climb Mount Fansipan

Mount Fansipan, the roof of Indochina!

Sapa is also home to Mount Fansipan , Indochina’s highest peak! There are a few ways to climb Mount Fansipan: climb with overnight camping; a day climb , or pair a Fansipan climb with a homestay and rice terrace trek. Pro Tips:

  • Fansipan is seriously tough! It's harder than Mt. Kinabalu and meant for experienced hikers who enjoy a challenge. Ascending takes 5-7 hours, and has boulders and ladders!
  • The summit is often foggy, so don't climb just for the views. Focus on enjoying the journey itself.
  • Climbing down is brutal. Opt for the cable car descent to save your knees.

5. Visit cosy cafes in Sapa Town

Enjoy a banana pancake and local coffee at a cute Sapa cafe before you leave!

Before leaving Sapa, be sure to spend a few hours in Sapa Town and popping by a few local cafes. One of our favourites is Gem Valley, and is known to have the best views in Sapa. Enjoy a banana pancake, drink some Vietnamese coffee and have one last look at the beautiful Sapa scenery before heading back to Hanoi. Another cosy place that trendy locals love is Color Bar. This cosy and hip place has a selection of exciting and yummy cocktails. 10/10 for ambience too!

Here, you’ll learn about the indigo dyeing and cloth-making traditions of this vibrant community. It is perfect for those looking to understand more about the local culture, and traditional crafts that are fast disappearing.

7. Try a Red Dao Herbal Bath

sapa tourism office

One of our favourite things about Sapa is being able to experience the way various ethnic communities live, and the Red Dao community is particularly fascinating. We'd highly recommend trying out the Red Dao herbal bath which is steeped in tradition.

The Red Dao community have been using medicinal plants for their baths for generations, with each family passing down their own unique recipe. It's not just relaxing; it can do wonders for tired muscles and has a bit of that magical touch to it! Plus, taking part in this tradition makes you feel a little more connected with the local culture.

8. Support a Social Enterprise

By supporting social enterprises in Sapa, you're directly supporting youth education and upskilling.

Trek with a social enterprise in Sapa to directly support local communities. These organizations empower H'mong youth by funding education, providing hospitality training, and creating fair job opportunities. While slightly pricier, the knowledge that your adventure makes a lasting impact is worth every penny.

9. Visit a Local Market

Sapa and its surrounds has lots of local markets, so if you're looking for souvenirs or you just love markets, you may like to visit.

Traditionally markets are not just for locals to trade at, but they're important social places for locals to gather and find love. While the main market in Sapa Town is now very touristy, you can find some fascinating, colourful markets further out. Here are some of the main ones from most touristy to least.

  • Sapa Market (Every Day, in Sapa Town) : this two-story traditional market is right in Sapa Town and opens daily. You can get all sorts of cheap souvenirs here, as well as fruits and vegetables. It's generally quiet Monday through Friday. Saturday mornings are somewhat busy, but Sunday morning is the big market day when the Black Hmong people from the furthest reaches of the district come to trade. It's not super special but it's fun to come on Sunday mornings to see the buzz of local activity.
  • Bac Ha Market (Sunday mornings, 100km from Sapa Town): This is the largest market in the area, and has become more touristed in recent years. It's a great place for people watching as ethnic communities come from all around the area, and try local market food. But watch out for over-inflated tourist prices, and some degree of hassle!
  • Can Cau Market (Saturday morning, 120km from Sapa Town) : If you want a really local experience, this is probably it. There are far fewer tourists here, and it's really fun to people watch and just take in the buzz. You may not find much to buy here as it's mainly local household goods (e.g. fresh produce, livestock, farming equipment, and clothing), but it's a fun adventure.

1. Pack light

Wear layers especially if you're hiking Fansipan

  • Bring a backpack: For homestays, ditch the luggage and bring a backpack – it'll be way easier on steep hills. Motorbike rides can accommodate backpacks if needed (up to 60L in front with a smaller one on your back). If you're doing a day trek, the guides will let you drop your bags at their office.
  • Good shoes: Trekking shoes with good grip are essential for safety, and bring lightweight, water-resistant clothes for Sapa's cool and often foggy weather.
  • Bring layers ! Layer up for winter, as it gets cold but you'll still sweat while trekking. Layers are also necessary for Fansipan!

2. Homestays are a must - but don't expect fancy!

Homestays in Sapa are basic, but cosy and full of heart.

Homestays are a must in Sapa! Having experienced both Sapa town and homestays, we can safely say that homestays let you truly connect with the heart of Sapa.

  • Don't expect anything fancy. You'll have proper (non-squat!) toilets and showers, but expect simple sleeping arrangements with mattresses and no air conditioning or heating.
  • Pack for cold! If visiting in winter (December-February), layers are essential as there's no heating. We wore 4 layers!
  • Spring to Autumn stays will be pleasantly cool (averaging at around 25°C/77°F in July).
  • A headlamp or flashlight is useful for navigating at night.

3. Do buy local crafts to support the local community

We don't usually go for touristy souvenirs, but Sapa is an exception. The beautiful handmade embroidery sold by Hmong women is a vital source of income for their families. You'll likely encounter these friendly women on treks, where they offer both assistance and their wares. Each piece takes days to create and costs less than $10 USD. While there's no pressure to buy, consider supporting these artisans and their families if you can!

4. To avoid the crowds, do a private trek

A private trek will take you to more hidden parts of Sapa

If you prefer a quieter experience and want to enjoy stunning views without the crowds, you might consider visiting Sin Suoi Hoi nearby, or take a private guide and request to go to less-touristed spots.

Sapa located: 38km from Lao Cai City, Sapa is a mountainous district of Lao Cai Province. Sapa District is very well-known with Sapa Townlet, a beautiful and romantic resort.

At the height of 1,600m above sea level, the average temperature of the area is 15-18oC. It is cool in summer and cold in winter.

Sapa overviews

Visitor to Sapa in summer can feel the climate of four seasons in one day. In the morning and afternoon, it is cool like the weather of spring and autumn. At noon, it is as sunny and cloudless as the weather of summer. And it is cold in the evening. With no advance warning of a thunderstorm short and heavy rains may come at noon on any summer day. Subsequently, a rainbow appears, transforming Sapa into a magic land, which for years has been a constant source of poetic inspiration, lights up the whole region.

The best time to witness the scenic beauty of Sapa is in April and May. Before that period, the weather might be cold and foggy; after that period is the rainy season. In April and May, Sapa is blooming with flowers and green pastures. The clouds that settle in the valley in early morning quickly disappear into thin air.

Sapa has many natural sites such as Ham Rong Mountain, Silver Waterfall, Rattan Bridge, Bamboo Forest and Ta Phin Cave. Sapa is also the starting point for many climbers and scientists who want to reach the top of Fansipan Mountain, the highest mountain in Vietnam at 3,143m. Hoang Lien Mountain Range is also called the Alps of the North Sea area since Fansipan Mountain is not only the highest peak in Vietnam, but also in the Indochina Peninsula. The pyramid-shaped mountain is covered with clouds all year round and temperatures often drop below zero, especially at high elevations.

Sapa market

The first thing you notice when approaching the resort town are some detached wooden mansions and villas perched on a hill top or hillside, behind thick pine forests and almost invisible on this foggy morning. Old and new villas with red roofs now appear and now disappear in the green rows of pomu trees, bringing the town the beauty of European towns.

Fresh and cool air in Sapa is an idea climate condition for growing temperate vegetables such as cabbage, chayote, precious medicinal herbs, and fruit trees such as plum, pear…

Sapa is home to various families of flowers of captivating colours, which can be found nowhere else in the country. When Tet, the Lunar New Year Festival, comes, the whole township of Sapa is filled with the pink colour of peach blossom brought from the vast forests of peach just outside the town. Sapa is regarded as the kingdom of orchids. Here, orchid lovers are even amazed by the choice, when trekking in the forest filled with several hundred kinds of orchids of brilliant colours and fantastic shapes, such as Orchid Princess, Orchid of My Fair Lady’s Shoe. Some orchids are named after lovely singing birds such as the canary, salangane’s nest, and more.

Sapa is most beautiful in spring. Apricot, plum and cherry flowers are splendidly beautiful. Markets are crowded and merry, and are especially attractive to visitors. Minority groups come here to exchange and trade goods and products. Market sessions are also a chance for locals to promenade and young men and women in colorful costumes to meet, date or seek sweethearts.

Visiting the small mountain town of Sapa while backpacking Vietnam? A quaint little bustling place situated in the north, Sapa is unlike any other destination in the country. But you need to know a few things before you go. Like where you should stay (hint: it’s not the actually town itself) and what good — and bad — things to expect while here. Keep reading to find out my best Sapa travel tips every Vietnam backpacker needs to know before visiting.

Sapa travel tips every Vietnam backpacker needs to know before venturing off to this Southeast Asian country!

Psst. This post contains affiliate links. Read our disclosure .

After backpacking Vietnam twice (both times using my 30-day Vietnam itinerary ), I’ve come to realize my favorite place to visit in this strange, yet magical country is without a doubt Sapa.

Hands down. No question about it.

With wildly gorgeous views of surrounding mountains and lush rice fields , friendly locals with quaint homestays, incredible hikes and treks, cute kids that’ll show you around the area , and a unique environment and aura that makes Sapa feel like it’s completely separated from the rest of the world, it’s a magical place to explore and relax for a few days.

To me, there’s nothing better than chilling out in a hammock, reading a good book, surrounded by breathtaking views of mountains and a million different shades of green that makes you question whether you’ve died and gone to heaven.

Sounds like something you’d be into? (Obviously, who wouldn’t be?)

Anyways, if you’re heading out to Sapa soon — or just thinking of visiting — here are my 17 Sapa travel tips every Vietnam backpacker needs to know before going.

SAPA TRAVEL TIPS EVERY VIETNAM BACKPACKER NEEDS TO KNOW

Yellow flowers dotted the countryside with lush rice fields and Sapa mountains in the background.

Getting to Sapa: Bus or Train?

First things first: how are you going to get to Sapa?

You’ll want to depart from Hanoi (which is the starting point of my Vietnam itinerary ) and can either opt for the train or the overnight bus.

Personally, I prefer traveling Vietnam by bus, as it’s super duper cheap and they’re pretty darn comfortable. The overnight bus from Hanoi to Sapa takes around 6-7 hours, which means you’ll likely depart Hanoi later at night and arrive bright and early.

Not to mention, buses are typically cheaper than trains and the Hanoi-Sapa bus arrives in the center of town, where as the train arrives to Lao Cai Railway Station and then you have to take a shuttle bus the rest of the way.

The cost of the bus typically ranges from $11 to $20 and the train cost ranges anywhere from $18 for the lowest class to $100 for your own cabin, plus the cost of the shuttle bus to Sapa town (~50,000 VND // $.21 USD).

You Won’t Stay in Sapa Town

So while you’ll arrive in Sapa town, you won’t actually be staying in the town itself (or, at least, you shouldn’t).

Instead, you’ll stay at a homestay managed by locals in the Sapa hillside. This means that once you arrive in Sapa, you’ll have to grab a taxi from the town to your homestay, which typically takes anywhere from around a half hour to an hour.

Or alternatively, you can also rent a motorbike for the duration of your Sapa stay, which can get you from Sapa town to your homestay. I did this on my first Vietnam backpacking trip and it worked out great!

Though my bike wasn’t the best quality (are they ever?), it got me from point A to point B and everywhere in between.

Nonetheless, believe me when I tell you, you’re going to want to stay outside Sapa town and in the hillsides! The views are SO much better and it’s much more relaxed.

Personally, I stayed at both The Little Hmong House and Hoa’s Homestay Sapa . Both were awesome but The Little Hmong House family went above and beyond when catering for Dan and I as vegans! So so wonderful.

Sapa 2017 sign, located in Sapa town.

Take Out Enough Cash

Holy moly, I wish someone would have told me this Sapa travel tip before I visited!

Both times I didn’t take out enough money and ended up having to borrow some from friends. Not fun.

Unless you want to make the treacherous journey back to Sapa town from your homestay to have access to an ATM, I recommend taking out at least 2,000,000 VND before you head to the hillside, if not more.

If you’re like me, you’ll end up staying an extra day or two because you’ll fall in love with Sapa so damn much (happened both times for my entire travel group!). Which means you need to account for that extra time without access to an ATM.

Just prepare by bringing more cash than you think you’ll need.

Sapa Village “Entrance” Fee

So, the first time I visited Sapa, I didn’t have to pay this so-called entrance fee but I for sure did the second time — mainly because my group and I were staying somewhere near Cat Cat village, which requires a 50,000 VND entrance fee.

If you’re staying in the town of Sapa (which, again, is a huge mistake, as you’ll miss out on actually seeing the gorgeous Vietnam / Sapa countryside), you won’t have to pay this.

But, as you’ll likely be shacking up a homestay outside of Sapa town, you’ll be stopped just as you leave town to pay the fee to some not-so-nice looking men.

Rolling green rice fields filled with water and layers of mountains in the background.

Prepare for Swarms of Saleswomen

Aka the local women who will literally surround you in packs when you get off the bus in Sapa town.

From their local souvenirs to their own homestay and trekking services, these ladies (who are actually really nice) will hound you until you say no about ten thousand times.

Just stand your ground and politely say no, you have a place to stay and a trekking trip already booked (even if you don’t). Also, don’t tell them where you’re staying when they ask, because they will.

You Will Be Followed

…but not in a creepy or stalkerish sort of way.

Going off the swarms of local sales ladies, you will also likely be followed by the local children who will eventually try to sell you something, whether it be a handmade souvenir or simply asking for a tip if they’ve shown you a place.

On my first visit, a group of local children showed my group and I a waterfall and afterwards asked for a tip (even though we never asked to be shown around).

On my second visit, my group and I had to strategically ignore a group of local girls who were following us and strategically attempted to give us a tour of the area.

While none of these things are bad, just be prepared to get asked many, many times if you want a tour or to buy a homemade souvenir from kids.

Four Sapa kids chilling out on a bench, looking tired in the Vietnam heat.

Bumps and Bouncing Galore

As I mentioned earlier, you’ll need to hire a taxi to take you from Sapa town to your hillside homestay (or rent a motorbike). But I just want to prepare you for the treacherous roads!

They are SO unbelievably bumpy. You’ll only come across a few paved roads in the area of Sapa and the one heading out of town is currently not one of them.

If you easily get carsick like I do, I recommend stocking up on Dramamine or motion sickness tablets before you go.

Rent a Motorbike and Explore the Area

One of my top 10 experiences to have in Vietnam, you must rent a motorbike and explore the region of Sapa.

Seriously, the views around Sapa are absolutely mind-blowing and unless you hire a driver for the day (which is rather expensive and won’t get to all the places a motorbike can go), renting a motorbike is the way to do it.

Just remember to ALWAYS wear a helmet and go slow on the sh*tty roads!

Sophie, aka The Wanderful Me, sitting on a motorbike with tall, blue mountains as a gorgeous background.

Psst, if you are one of those people who disregard safety and don’t wear a helmet, make sure to at least get travel insurance! I recommend World Nomads or a cheaper, but also great option, SafetyWing .

Zero Restaurants

Unless you’re actually staying in Sapa, there are virtually zero restaurants to eat at.

For most meals, unless you’re motorbiking around during the day, you will probably end up eating at your homestay. Which is great, as many make delicious food!

Also, the food at a homestay tends to be really cheap! So great for budget backpackers.

Bring Good Shoes

Whether you’re doing a multi-day trek or not, I highly recommend bringing good shoes. Sapa is a dusty place when dry and a muddy place when wet, so comfortable, supportive shoes are a must.

Not to mention, it’s very, very hilly!

Personally, I traveled with a fantastic pair of light, supportive trainers and they worked well for the dry season (January — June).

Here are some shoe brands I recommend:

  • Saucony Tennis Shoes (this is the brand I brought with me).
  • ASICS Women Running Shoes .
  • Salomon Women Running Shoes (I also use this brand for my hiking boots).

Sophie and a friend, Emma, doing some Sapa trekking, a top place in Northern Vietnam to hike the hills!

Plan for 2 Nights Minimum

You’ll want at least one full day to really get the full Sapa experience. Especially if you plan on doing some hiking in the area, which is a must.

Although, 3 nights is even better. Then you get two full days; one day for hiking and one day for simply chilling out and admiring the good f*cking views.

Click HERE to check out all the awesome Sapa homestays and find one that’s right for you!

Trekking Guides: Yay or Nay?

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need a guide to hike the mountains of Sapa. You only need one if you’re doing a multi-day trek into the hillside villages!

My group and I did our own ~9 mile hike around the area of our homestay, walking across the Su pan Hydro Plant bridge, visiting the Cau May Waterfall, and trekking up to the Bamboo Forest.

While I think it’s easy to do just a day hike yourself (especially with the help of Google Maps, which we had), there’s no chance of you going off on a multi-day trek by yourself. Hire a professional for that shit.

Multi-Day Treks I recommend:

  • From Hanoi: 2-Day Sapa Homestay Adventure + Trekking (AWESOME reviews!)
  • Sapa 3-Night Trek & Homestay with Overnight Train
  • From Sapa: Waterfalls, Trekking and Tribal Villages Tour

Layers and layers of both gorgeously green rice fields and Sapa mountains.

Pack Warm Clothes for Cold Sapa Weather

Sapa is notoriously chilly at night — even during the “summer” season.

I have visited Sapa at vastly different times of the year — dry season in March, rainy season in August — and both trips were very, very chilly in the evening and at night.

In fact, during my last trip, we even received a heated blanket to stay warm at night!

So, make sure you pack at least a few pieces of warm clothing, such as a light sweatshirt , long-sleeve top , and a long pair of leggings .

Prepare to See Some Things

And when I say things, I mean some very very cute things and some very very not cute things.

My personal sightings ranged from an adorable family of pigs — including some brand new ones who were still just the size of a cantaloupe — to a full-on decaying dog corpse floating in a river. (Yes, I’m scarred for life.)

While this is under the category of Sapa, this travel tip pertains to the whole country. In fact, it’s one of my remarkably useful tips you should know before traveling Vietnam ! Go check that out.

A family of pigs with one big mamma and 5 little ones.

Participate in “Family Dinners”

One of the BEST parts about staying in a Sapa homestay is that many do this thing call “family dinners” where many (or all) travelers and backpackers staying there eat dinner together.

It’s a great way to get to know people, as well as fill up on a ton of food, which is served in a sort of pass-the-plate buffet style.

Although you don’t eat with the actually family running the homestay, it’s still a great way to engage with fellow travelers who might become good friends!

Eating Vegan is Easy

While I had some trouble eating vegan in other parts of the country, eating vegan in Sapa was a piece of cake!

If you decide to stay at a homestay, all — or most of — your meals will be made by the family living there, which means they can customize any dish to your liking!

Personally, I filled up on veggie fried rice, tofu fried noodles, fried mushrooms (one of my favorite dishes from The Little Hmong House “family dinner”!), and steamed / sauteed veggies. It was awesome!

A water-filled rice paddie with an abundance of ducks and birds.

Get Travel Insurance

No matter where you’re going in Vietnam, you’ll need travel insurance. A notorious place where backpackers tend to get hurt, Vietnam is unpredictable and, to be honest, a bit reckless.

Make sure you keep yourself safe by staying covered with genuine, dependable travel insurance.

I’ve used both World Nomads , which is a favorite amongst the backpacker community because they cover a plethora of activities, and SafetyWing , which is newer but more affordable and still has great coverage.
