Unleash Your Inner Sailor on a Windjammer Adventure in Maine!

Sail aboard the newest and largest vessel in the fleet!

Welcome Aboard!

Join us aboard the Heritage this season for an unforgettable Maine windjammer cruise. Every trip is special. Capts. Sean and Ben are your hosts aboard every trip. In addition to sailing the vessel, they enjoy entertaining their guests by playing live music in the evenings. The food is delicious with restaurant quality dishes made with fresh local ingredients. Daily breads, cookies, and desserts are all freshly baked aboard.

Each trip we enjoy an all-you-can-eat lobster cookout on a pristine island beach. Hear about the islands, vessels and people of Mid-Coast Maine as well as the many lighthouses we see. Wildlife abounds with birds both ashore and at sea as well as marine mammals. Best of all you can enjoy sailing aboard a schooner built with your comfort in mind.

Heritage Sailing

Enjoyed the trip of a lifetime with my daughter (age 29)! The Captains and crew were kind and engaging and the food was incredible! The main coast is full of beautiful little islands and sailing felt like such an adventure! The captains entertained us one evening and surprised us with their notable talents!

Romantic getaways in Maine Schooner Heritage

We have a trip for everyone aboard the Schooner Heritage. Whether you want to sail with the fleet, explore in search of lighthouses, tour Acadia, bond with family, gaze at shooting stars, or just relax and sail the Maine coast with no itinerary. We can always promise stunning views, delicious food, and an unforgettable experience. Summers in Maine are a time for growth and rejuvenation. The season is short so as Mainers we celebrate and make the most of it. Join us in this celebration as we explore hidden places not accessible to most and with 3,478 miles of tidal coastline, see Maine the way it was meant to be seen.

Coasting schooners, like the Heritage, were designed for accessing shallow passages and ports allowing us to travel to more secluded places where comparable sized vessels can’t access. This makes Heritage the perfect choice when choosing a windjammer to sail on.

Live music night in the Heritage galley

Enjoy an evening beverage and sing along with Captains Sean and Ben during lively music nights.  Whether up on deck, or down in the galley, music nights aboard the Schooner Heritage are the best on the bay!

Performing different genres of music, and the songs you know and love, as well as songs you may have never heard before that will surely be added to your playlist after you get home.

We look forward to you joining us!

Relax  & Unwind

You'll feel like you've stepped into another time and place aboard Heritage. Each day is filled with a little adventure and plenty of relaxation. We leave Rockland headed for parts unknown; wherever the wind, weather, and tides take us. The coast of Maine is spotted with over 3,000 islands topped with lush evergreen forests and lined with rugged granite shores. Row ashore and stretch your legs in local fishing villages and towns rich with art and culture. In the evenings we will anchor in hidden coves where you’ll enjoy coastal wildlife, spectacular sunsets, and endless stars.

Spend the days trimming sails, steering the schooner, learning about the Maine coast and wildlife, or just sit back, read a book, and watch the scenery drift past. The galley crew cooks up delicious meals on our wood cookstove, so those sea going appetites will be satisfied and then some. When the sun begins to set, the French will settle into a cozy harbor and swing silently at anchor.

National Historic Landmark Schooner Lewis R. French

The French was proudly named a National Historic Landmark and has a large following. From folks that have sailed on her as a windjammer to old-timers who remember her when she carried freight, the French has touched many people. It is a truly unique experience to sail on a vessel that has been active since shortly after the death of Abraham Lincoln!

Coastal Maine Windjammer Cruises: Overnight Schooner Sailing Vacations

' src=

Maine Windjammer cruises will connect you with nature as you adventure along the coast of Maine. These overnight schooner sailing vacations are unique due to their small size and big adventure.

Taking a cruise on any one of the nine ships in the Maine Windjammer Association fleet is a wonderful experience. It’s a time to unwind and unplug as you become part of a unique family of crew and passengers, sailing Maine's beautiful New England coastline in the northern United States.

Who is a Maine Windjammer Cruise For?

We think this experience is great for:

  • A history buff.
  • Anyone who wants a unique adventure on the ocean.
  • A person who is craving a break from technology and devices and wants an “unplugged,” all inclusive experience.
  • Someone interested in being closer to nature than on a typical cruise ship (even a small cruise ship).
  • A person wanting a unique way to see Maine’s Coast for more than a few hours.
  • Someone who wants to understand sailing life a little better.
  • Anyone who wishes they could own a sailboat but can't, for whatever reason. This is a great way to get your sailboat fix!

The History of Maine Windjammer Association

Our captain shared with us that Maine Windjammer Association (MWA) was formed in the 1970s. A few captains of several ships back then came together to be able to afford advertising in the New York Times and a paper in Portland, Maine. Their advertisements looked a little like a divided quilt, with a silhouette or drawing of the ship on it.

Though the ads and form of advertising have changed from paper and print to websites and social media, the camaraderie and strength of like-minded captains has persisted well into the 21st century. The ships are individually owned and operated, but they can attract more guests when they band together.

The Maine Windjammer Association Fleet

Nine ships make up the fleet of the association. Each ship's character differs from the others in terms of its finishes, sails, and vibe, depending on its captain.

Each vessel offers a lobster bake on a coastal Maine island. (If the weather is inclement, the lobster bake may be on your ship, like it was for us. It was still fantastic!)

Ships that leave from Rockland and the Ship's Captain(s) and Owners

  • American Eagle : Captain Tyler King
  • Heritage : Captains Sean Grimes and Ben Welzenbach
  • J. & E. Riggin : Captains Justin Schaefer and Jocelyn Schmidt
  • Stephen Taber : Jane Barnes and Captain Noah Barnes
  • Ladona : Jane Barnes and Captains Noah Barnes and J.R. Braugh
  • Grace Bailey : Captain Sam Sikkema

Ships that leave from Camden and the Ship's Captain(s) and Owners

  • Lewis R. French : Captain Becky Wright
  • Angelique : Captain Dennis Gallant and Candace Kuchinski
  • Mary Day: Captains Barry King & Jen Martin

The Angelique ship with red sails, sailing Maine's coast, part of Maine Windjammer cruises.

Age of the Maine Windjammer Cruises Ships

The ships were built within just over a century of each other. The two oldest were built in 1871. That includes the Stephen Taber and Lewis R. French. Grace Bailey was built in 1882. The Heritage was built in 1983. American Eagle, which we sailed on, was built in 1930. All of the ships have been through various refreshes and modernizations over the years, including maintenance (as any boat owner knows is never-ending)

Note that this is not the date that the ship became a passenger-bearing vessel. It's simply when it was built. For example, American Eagle didn't start to take on passengers until 1986, when Captain John Foss, the previous ship owner, remodeled it.

Size of the Schooners: Length and Guest Cap

The ships range in length from 64 feet (Lewis R. French) to 132 feet (Victory Chimes). The American Eagle is 92 feet and felt plenty big yet also intimate.

The number of guests that can sleep on the ship vary as well. While Ladona can sleep the least, at 16 passengers, Victory Chimes can host the most at 40. However, most of the ships fall in the 20 to 30 range, with American Eagle capping out at 26 guests. This does not include the crew. (On American Eagle, we had 6 crew members, including Captain John Foss, who has since retired.)

Maine Windjammer Cruises: Amount of Days

All the ships sail various cruise lengths, from three to six days. Some of the ships can do one or two-day sailings (Lewis R. French, Mary Day, and J. & E. Riggin). Ladona has overnight sailing cruise options that are seven days, and American Eagle has cruises that are eight or nine days as well.

We recommend a minimum of three nights. Our sailing was four days and four nights, and it was wonderful for our introduction to this type of cruising, but not too much, just in case we were iffy about it. (We loved it – next time, we'd spring for a five day! We recount each day in our trip report .)

Ports of Departure and Getting to Coastal Maine

You have to get to Maine to embark on your Maine Windjammer Association adventure, sailing Maine’s cost.

People either fly to Portland, where Maine’s main airport is, and drive to the port from there or fly to Boston and do the same. (The drive from Boston, which is further south along the coast, is just a little longer.)

If you don’t want to rent a car, a number of car services will take you to coastal Maine along with a coach bus option, through Concord Coach Lines . But expect to pay a few hundred dollars, depending on what airport you arrive to and its distance to your port of departure.

Not all of the Maine Windjammer Association cruises leave from the same port – there are two port locations, one in Rockland and one in Camden. The towns are very close to each other, however you'll only need to go to one of the two for your trip.

You can expect for your Maine Windjammer cruise to be closed-loop , meaning it starts and ends in the same port.

One of the main considerations in budgeting for our sailing trip was what it was going to cost us to get to Maine before even getting on the ship. And, candidly, it cost us about the same amount to get to Maine and rent a car as it does to go on Maine Windjammer cruises for a few days. (We rented a car to continue on a 7-day road trip of Maine's coastal towns immediately following our four-day schooner cruise.)

Cost to Sail Maine's Coast with Maine Windjammer Cruises

The length of the cruise and what ship you're going on are the two factors that most affect the cost of sailing with Maine Windjammer Cruises.

Cruises with Maine Windjammer Association vary from $885 to $3,188.

When you are budgeting for your trip, aside from budgeting for transportation to get to the port, you should also allot for tip money. Tips are between 8% to 10% per crew member, per passenger. This adds a few hundred dollars to your trip.

We discuss that a bit more in our Maine Windjammer Cruise packing list post.

schooner boat trips maine

Accessibility on the Maine Windjammer Association Ships

Due to the age of the ships, and way you need to climb up and down steep steps (nearly ladders) to get from one deck to another, we do not recommend this type of cruise for anyone with mobility concerns. You simply cannot avoid the steps to get between the decks.

Additionally, if you want to go ashore near ports, you have to tender to land in a rowboat. The way this is done is by lowering a rowboat into the water, then the guests climb down from the schooner to the rowboat with the help of a very small ladder that's simply rope and wooden cross bars.

Lastly, the rooms and space within each cabin are not big enough to accommodate wheelchairs or walkers.

Man going into a rowboat from a sailboat on the water in Maine.

Special Events and Themed Cruises

There are special events cruises every year that may vary slightly, but the overall themes are there. This includes things like the arts and specialty nature cruises, where usually, a specific guide will be on board to educate the guests about the topic. Here are some cruises for you to keep an eye on if any of the activities interest you:

  • Lighthouse cruises
  • Photography cruises
  • Yoga and Wellness cruise
  • Knitting cruise
  • Fall foliage cruise
  • Wine-tasting or beer-tasting cruises
  • Acadia National Park and cruise
  • Meteor shower cruise

Some events are considered Gatherings of the Fleet. This includes things like Great Schooner Race, Camden Windjammer Festival and Schooner Gams, which are when the majority of the Maine Windjammer Association fleet gather in a harbor or right next to one another for a fun and casual gathering.

We experienced a Gam on the sailing we were on with American Eagle, when about seven of the ships were together in a harbor. It was amazing to see the ships sailing into the harbor to moor to spend some time together!

Our cruise also had the option to sign up for watercolor lessons with a watercolor artist and teacher onboard. Carol L. Douglas is a very talented artist. Though we didn't sign up for the workshop, it was amazing to see her students (and the guests) painting “en plein air” throughout our sailing.

Participation in Ship Responsibilities

Participating in things like raising and lowering the sails is completely optional. You'll get FOMO (fear of missing out!) if you don't do it at least once, but it certainly isn't required.

By the end of the cruise, Dan was a pro, furling sails like he'd be doing it his whole life!

They also asked for volunteers to help dry dishes after each meal on our ship, and I helped do it twice to bond with the other guests who were helping, along with the crew. But again, it's not required. It is completely voluntary.

Cruise Ports: Where do the Ships Go?

Unlike a river cruise or ocean cruise with a set itinerary, which may change due to weather but you generally know where you’re going (from Alaska’s ports to European ports and beyond), a cruise with Maine Windjammer Association is open to the captain’s desires of where he or she wants to sail that day.

The adventure is really being on the ship and knowing, overall, you’ll stop in some small coastal Maine towns here or there to walk around for a while and then row back to your moored schooner in the harbor.

We stopped in the harbor of two towns during our trip. One was Stonington (a quaint and picturesque fishing village), and the other was North Haven. Another day, we had the option to go ashore on Russ Island, which was pretty much simply a beautiful, mostly untouched beach that Dan and I enjoyed exploring together for an hour and a half.

What is the Food Like on Maine Windjammer Association Cruises?

From our experience, it's excellent. We were truly in awe of how much food they pump out in such a small g a lley , how often they are creating meals (nearly constantly when the sun is up), and how GOOD it is.

In fact, the BEST lobster we have ever had (including during our 7-day road trip following our Maine Windjammer cruise) was on the American Eagle.

We haven't been on every ship, however, we hear from trusted friends, travel writers, and colleagues that the food on any of the ships is outstanding.

In addition to a lobster bake on every Maine Windjammer Association sailing, you can expect things like fresh baked bread, comforting soups (especially wonderful with how cold it can get as you sail, even during summer in Maine ), coffee and tea with breakfast and lunch, savory breakfasts, sweet desserts, and filling dinners including dessert.

I am a guide leading trips in Maine for the summer I have a block of time off I would love to do an overnight trip maybe three or four day sail if you have availability anytime from July 31st thru Aug 4. Thank you!

Hi Tiffany! We highly recommend a Maine Windjammer cruise. We’re not any of the ships – we traveled on American Eagle and were happy to write about our experience to spread the word. Visit their website for availability of sailings: https://www.sailmainecoast.com/

Interested in 3-day Windjammer sails in Maine. An 80th birthday present. I have sailed a 16 ft Swampscott dory out of Provincetown for over 20 years and have experience bareboating 30+ sloops on the West Coast of Florida. Some mobility problems after 2 recent knee replacements Miss the sea so much. please advise. Bill Hughes

Hi Bill – Happy 80th birthday! What an amazing way to celebrate! We recommend reaching out to the Windjammer own directly. They are great people! You can participate or not participate as much as you like in the hoisting of the sails and such. The mobility challenges we’d recommend looking out for are the stairs to get to/from the sleeping deck and galley, which is more like a ladder. And also the ladder to get into a rowboat to get to shore when the boat is moored. We’ll email you to connect you with the ship owner. 😉

Or, book an afternoon sail for stronger winds that will make the sailboat cruise faster. This sail typically sees seals along the route, and the captain will often give a narration of the wildlife and history of the area.

Another option is a sunset sail for a romantic experience. This sail will have you seeing gorgeous sunset views on calm waters.

A Morning in Maine

If you’re strapped for time and want a shorter sail, A Morning in Maine’s sailing trips are a wonderful experience. The two-hour sailing adventures take place aboard a 55-foot ketch that passes lighthouses and other schooners.

The morning trip is perfect for those looking for calm sailing. The mid-afternoon sail has windier conditions for a faster sail. Evening and sunset sails feature beautiful sunset views and a relaxing ride. Guests are often given the chance to try to steer the boat as well.

Schooner Surprise

The Schooner Surprise has been sailing for over 105 years, with 30 of those years setting sail out of Camden Maine . Guests can book a two-hour sail with views of the lighthouse, summer houses and views of Penobscot Bay .

These family-friendly sails let guests, including children, take the wheel while out at sea. Special sails include a Full Moon Sail that features live music during sunset and a trip lasting two hours into the night. Or, book a fireworks view sail or a Birding and Marine Life Tour with an ornithologist.

Sail Portland Maine-Portland

Portland & Casco Bay Sailing Tours

Portland schooner co..

Portland Schooner Co. sets sail from Portland Maine and cruises through Casco Bay for a delightful trip along the coastline and past lighthouses and ocean life, like seals. On the two-hour sail, bring your own picnic and even alcoholic beverages for a relaxing, scenic time on the water.

These sails are perfect for all ages. Sails take place throughout the day on one of the five historic wooden schooners. The sails are relaxing and do not include narration, but the crew is available to answer any questions that guests may have.

Maine Sailing Adventures

Maine Sailing Adventures offers traditional two-hour and themed sails through Casco Bay . What sets it apart from other sailing companies is its unique themed sails. Try an acoustic sail that features live music. Or, try a wine sail that includes a wine tasting for adults.

Have you ever heard of a yoga sail? This ship can accommodate up to 12 guests for a yoga class that you won’t experience anywhere else. Enjoy amazing views of the water while working on your poses.

Sail Portland Maine

If you’re looking for an intimate sailing adventure, Sail Portland Maine has you covered. Guests can choose a private charter or a public trip. The public trips’ capacity is 12 people, so you know that your sail won’t be too crowded.

Day and sunset trips are two hours in length and pass by all of the famous Casco Bay features — like historic forts, lighthouses, and if you’re lucky to spot them, seals. Guests are welcome to bring their own food and drinks, while bottled water is complimentary on board.

Kennebunkport

There’s no better way to see the Kennebunk River than sailing on it. The Pineapple Ketch departs from Nonantum Resort for a dazzling trip along the river and the Kennebunkport coastline.

You’ll see gorgeous seasonal cottages, including the famous cottage of President George H.W. Bush. Enjoy views of the Goat Island Lighthouse, local harbors, seabirds, and seals.

Each sail includes complimentary bottled water and sodas, but guests are also welcome to bring their own food and beverages.

Silverlining Sailing

Silverlining Sailing offers one of the most intimate sails in Ogunquit Maine . Each boat has the capacity for up to six passengers, making for a small group sail. Sails typically last two hours, departing from the quaint Perkins Cove village.

There are five trips daily (weather permitting) from early morning through to a sunset sail in the evening. Enjoy stunning ocean views, gorgeous waterfront homes, views of local beaches, and harbors.

Since this is a smaller group sail, guests get the opportunity to try their hand at taking the wheel and steering the schooner.

Broad Reach Adventures

Broad Reach Adventures has two-hour sails, half-day and full-day sails, and chartered sails from Saco Maine , so there’s a sail to accommodate your busy schedule.

Each one allows guests to see beautiful views of the Saco River, Saco Bay, Biddeford Pool, Old Orchard Beach , and lighthouses along the way. Longer sails provide guests with the opportunity to disembark and explore uninhabited islands.

A unique feature that Broad Reach Adventures offers is the opportunity to add a massage or professional photographer. These experiences are available on certain dates and times, so book ahead if you’re interested in these add-ons.

Sailing Lessons & Boat Rentals

If you want to learn to sail, sailing instruction is often available as part of your charter package.  Private charters  of sailboats on the Maine coast allow experienced sailors to explore the coastline on their own.

Private sailors will find  hotel marinas  for lodging in Maine’s best harbors. If you time your sailing cruise right, you might witness seals, porpoises, whales, or other tall ships.

Watching the sunrise from the deck of a schooner is one of life’s simplest, most satisfying pleasures. Of course, the spectacular Maine scenery is always included on your sail.

Set Sail on Sailboat & Schooner Tours From Maine This Season

Now that you know about all of the sailing trip options, it’s time to set sail into the open waters of Maine. From two-hour trips of the bays and harbors to overnight excursions, there’s an experience awaiting you on your next getaway.

Each Maine sailing company offers its own unique trips aboard safe, well-maintained schooners. Relax, unwind, and feel the ocean breeze in your hair as you cruise through the lapping waves of Maine’s Atlantic shoreline.

#1 Outdoor Activity in Rockland, Maine! Our Customers Love Us!

Maine is best by sailboat.

“Loved our afternoon on Morning in Maine. The wind was great and the boat is really lovely. Capt Tyler and George were great crew. Saw eagles, a harbor seal and all the sights you’d want to see in Rockland. Sailing really is the best way to get to know Maine.”

Best "boat ride" in Maine

“As Mainers, we have had the opportunity to go on various “boating adventures” along the Maine coast. This was the most pleasant and fun one ! 2 hours was perfect. The captain allowing the kids to help with the sails was very cool and even steer… Totally made their day. The captain was very personable and made the trip interesting. I was concerned about getting seasick, but the ride was actually very smooth.”

“We had a wonderful time on our sailing expedition and learned a lot about the area. Definitely worth the time to spend some time on the water with folks that live in the area sharing lots of good stories.”

Great experience!

"Our sail on a Morning in Maine was one of the highlights of our trip. The views were beautiful and the ride was smooth and relaxing. It was a great experience and one that I highly recommend!"

Suzannah Smith

A Mainer born and raised, Suzannah grew up in the coastal town of Brunswick. Some of her fondest memories as a youngster were weeklong family sailing trips downeast around Penobscot Bay. Suzannah graduated from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine with a passion for environmental studies and sustainable food systems. After a few years of engaging work in farms and restaurants across Maine and New Orleans, she found herself back in Penobscot Bay as galley hand on a Windjammer and fell in love with the maritime industry. With some valuable crewing time under her belt, she moved to a permanent shoreside position with the historic Windjammer, Victory Chimes and quickly gained responsibility. Today, she is thrilled to be a co-owner and manager of the Grace Bailey.

Amazing Vacation on the Water

""I'’ ve never been on a ship before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but this trip was magical!

Waking up to amazing vistas every morning, enjoying coffee and a pastry on the deck, feeling the ship under sail and ge tting to help raise them, all incredible.

Honestly, the only downside is that the food was so good I ended up gaining 5 lbs. Exceeded expectations, would go again. And again. And again."

"Big Nude Boat" offers a trip to "bare-adise" on a naked cruise from Florida

By Li Cohen

Updated on: May 2, 2024 / 8:20 AM EDT / CBS News

Like to travel light? One cruise ship soon to set sail from Florida is making sure all you need is the bare necessities – no shoes, no clothes but plenty of service.

" The Big Nude Boat " will take travelers from Miami to the Caribbean on "an 11-day adventure back to Bare-adise," the website says. Setting sail from Feb. 3 through Valentine's Day 2025, the trip offers a "stress-free, clothes-free experience" during which up to 2,300 passengers can roam the ship in the nude while out at sea.

"It's our pleasure to provide you with the luxury of deciding what NOT to wear," Bare Necessities Tour and Travel says.

@cbsmornings Would you dare to set sail on a nude cruise? 🚢 Cruisebare's upcoming full-ship nude cruise, departing from Miami in February next year, is making waves. Even #TonyDokoupil is down to go. 🌊 #cruises #vacation #experience #miami #sail ♬ original sound - CBS Mornings

Passengers won't be allowed to be naked when the ship is docked, but can ditch their usual attire once they are anchored or out on the water. And when clothing is optional, standard nudist etiquette must be abided by, the website says. When sitting, nude passengers must either wear a thong or sit on a towel or some kind of fabric. And while the self-serve buffet on the pool deck is a clothes-free area, passengers must be dressed for all dining room meals – and no, bathrobes don't count.

Photos and videos will also not be permitted unless all individuals being documented give consent.

"The Big Nude Boat" is just one of the cruises offered by Bare Necessities, which says on its website that the company has been "working to break down the barriers against social nudity and make clothing-optional vacationing a viable and acceptable option for all."

"Social nudity is not a sexual activity, and we strive to dispel the misconception that it is anything but natural and beautiful," the company says. "We have made strides in the acceptance of nude vacationing and our wide range of cruise charters are a testament to our success."
