Humpback whale

DESCRIPTION

The humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is a large baleen whale species belonging to the rorquals. Its head is broad and rounded when viewed from above, but slim in profile. The body is not as streamlined as other rorquals, but is quite round, narrowing to a slender tail. The body is black on the upper side, and mottled black and white on the underside. This colour pattern extends to the flukes, where the pattern is unique to each individual whale.

Humpback whales feed on krill, small shrimp-like crustaceans, and various kinds of small fish. Each whale eats up to 1 and 1/2 tons of food a day.

DISTRIBUTION

North Atlantic humpback whales migrate to their breeding grounds in the Caribbean. In the summertime, they frequent shallow waters around Iceland and come often into the fjords and bays in search of food. The population size in Icelandic waters is uncertain, but is estimated to be around 1,500-1,800 individuals.

Length: 13-17 metres

Weight: 25-40 tons

Worldwide population: 10,000-15,000

Life expectancy: 45-50 years

minkewhale_reykjavik_iceland_reykjaviksailors

Minke whale

The common minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) is a baleen whale species belonging to the rorquals. Its body is counter-shaded-black to dark gray on top, white below. Some minkes have a light-coloured chevron on the back behind the head. Two areas of lighter gray appear on each side: one behind the flippers and another below and forward of the dorsal fin. Minke whales also have a characteristic white band on each flipper, contrasting with its very dark gray top colour. Like all baleen whales, the minke whale has 2 blowholes.

Minke whales feed primarily on krill in the southern hemisphere and on small schooling fish (capelin, cod, herring, pollock) or krill in the northern hemisphere.

The Icelandic minke whale population is estimated to be 50,000 – 60,000 animals.

Length: 7-10 metres

Weight: 8-10 tons

Worldwide population: Possibly 1,000,000

Life expectancy: About 50 years

This tour has different starting times depending on day and season from one to six departures a day.

The animals most frequently seen on tours are the Minke whales, Humpback whales, Dolphins, and Porpoises. Our qualified guides do an excellent job of providing you with information and giving you the best opportunities to see and learn all about wildlife. Learn all about sea life while coasting through Faxaflói bay.

Please understand that weather and sea conditions play a big role in how much we actually see. However, each experience is unique and well worth booking! No two whale watching trips are ever the same. Due to unreliable impending forecasts and such, we take sea conditions and weather into account when booking the trips. We will put you in the best situation possible.

We rarely have to go further than 15 km from the harbor. For your comfort and warmth, we offer special suits on board. We do advise that you wear your warmest clothes  – hats, scarves, gloves etc – as it can get very cold (even on the warmest days) when the boat is in motion. We also offer hot drinks and soup in our onboard café.

Our boats are built so that you have the option to watch the whales from inside as well. With the large windows and inside warmth, you can enjoy the animals of the North Atlantic from a very comfortable view. Each trip takes about 2,5 – 3,5 hours. This is a great trip for the whole family!

How is it best to be ready for a pick-up for a tour with Arctic Adventures?

This is a great question. We ask all participants to be ready from the start of the pickup time indicated. This is because you may well be the first pick up of the day. Please be at your assigned location at the start time that you chose when booking the tour.

Here you should wait for your guide.

Have your email and phone number listed with us so we can contact you if we run into any trouble finding you.

View our   pick-up locations   in Reykjavík.

Can I drink alcohol before or during Arctic Adventures tours?

Before and during activities on the multi-day tours consumption of alcohol is prohibited. If we suspect that a participant is intoxicated, we will prohibit them from joining the activity.

After the activities of the day are finished, you are welcome to have a drink and relax.

Do you offer any family friendly tours, for younger children?

Yes, we do. Langjökull Ice Cave is a magical experience, the tour has no minimum age and is a wonderful option for the whole family. Whale Watching with our partner company Elding has been a favourite with families traveling with young children, these guys have a great success rate in seeing whales (upwards of 98% in the summertime).

Another option would be the Landmannalaugar Safari on this tour you get to explore parts of the Icelandic highlands and bathe in natural hot springs. Most of our super jeep tours  are also suitable for children over the age of 6 years old. If you would like a nice and relaxing experience we would also recommend the Golden Circle & Secret Lagoon tour .

Can the itinerary for the tour change?

Your safety is our number one priority! Keeping this in mind, Arctic Adventures reserves the right to adjust the itinerary and/or take different routes depending on conditions. Please read more information in our  cancellation policy .

Is there a guide on each Arctic Adventures tour?

Yes, there is a specially trained and certified guide on each of our tours. The only exception to this is for our   self-drive tours .

All of our tours are guided in English.

Can the guide advise if I am eligible for rescheduling the tour and/or a refund?

No, for all your questions and concerns you would need to contact our customer service.

What type of power outlets are used in Iceland? Do I need to bring an adapter?

The standard in Iceland is 230V and 50Hz and we use F-type power sockets and plugs, so you might have to bring an adaptor if you are visiting from UK, USA, Canada or other countries using a different voltage, Hz or plugs.

How are the tours rated in terms of difficulty?

Our tours are split into four different categories that help participants to understand what to expect from the tour. The categories are Easy, Moderate, Challenging and Demanding. Each tour is rated making it easier to find tours that suit you.

For further information about the   difficulty ratings   and descriptions.

How does carbon offsetting work?

We’ve partnered with the Kolviður Fund in a new carbon offsetting program, which passengers can select to participate in at the time of booking.

The Kolviður Fund   is the oldest, most respected carbon offsetting program in Iceland. With your support, one tree will be planted in special Kolviður forests in Iceland to carbon offset your tour with us.

Kolviður forests are strategically planted to absorb the maximum amount of CO2 and the forests are protected for a minimum of 60 years. During their lifetime the trees absorb carbon and store it in their root system, trunk, and branches. Trees also prevent soil erosion and maintain storage of carbon in the soil.

Best Whale Watching Tours In Reykjavik – Ultimate Guide 2024

by Kev Shepherd

the incredible humpack breach as seen on many whale watching tours in reykjavik

The capital is a very convenient location to see the whales of Iceland so here is a breakdown of the best whale watching tours in Reykjavik.

Amelia Rose Yacht Whale Watching Tour

We ended up choosing to go on this incredible yacht which took us out to the feeding grounds in style. The guide was absolutely brilliant and the bar served very nice drinks to warm up on the way back to the harbor. Check out this #1 whale watching tour in Reykjavik here!

Whale Watching In Reykjavik On A Yacht! - Sea Trips Amelia Rose

Whale Watching Tours In Reykjavik

There are many options when considering a whale watching tour in Reykjavik, including different boats, different times, and different amounts of people. The price of each of these options doesn’t actually vary that much, ranging from $90, to $150 per person which means that you should be able to choose the exact tour you want.

Take a look below at the top 10 whale watching tours in Reykjavik and if you want even more information on what you can fully expect from a tour like this then either watch our video or look at the information below the recommendations!

#1 Best YACHT Whale Watching Experience

We ended up choosing to go on a luxury yacht called the Amelia Rose ; this turned out to be a fantastic option. You get a very nice yacht with a fantastic top-deck viewing platform, a nice interior and bar, and an exceptionally good tour guide who provides information throughout the experience.

Check out our video below to see exactly what your tour will be like on the Amelia Rose

I think choosing a yacht is the best option for people who want an incredible experience but are a little budget savvy as a ferry is slightly cheaper (but only just) and a yacht has fewer people and you get a much nicer boat.

We highly recommend the Amelia Rose whale watching tour in Reykjavik and you can book the exact tour we went on here!

Key Information

  • Tour Duration: 3 Hours
  • Pickup Included: No
  • Age Suitable For: All
  • Tour Pace: Relaxed
  • Start Time: 9:15 am or 1:15 pm
  • Tour Guide: Yes

#1 Best FERRY Whale Watching Experience

For the most budget-conscious among you, a ferry is the best option. It is usually around 15-20% less than a yacht and offers very close to the same service. So, if you are looking for the most value-for-money whale watching tour in Reykjavik then this is the one for you!

You will board a larger boat that includes outside and indoor seating. This boat comes with a bar for food and drinks as well as an experienced whale watching tour guide. If you are staying a bit further away from the harbor (but still in Reykjavik) there is also an option for pick-up (for an additional fee). Book this #1 ferry whale watching experience in Reykjavik here!

#1 Best RIB Whale Watching Experience

It can be argued that the undisputed best whale watching in Reykjavik experience is on a RIB (rigid inflatable boat). These small, extremely fast vehicles get you to the feeding grounds quicker than any other transport which gives you the most amount of time with the whales. Not only this, but they also are closer to the water which means you are closer to the action (they can also get closer to the whales too).

You get all of the warm clothing provided (including goggles and life vests) and the seats even have suspension built in for additional comfort whilst you are crashing a long those waves! Check out the prices and availability of this tour right here!

  • Tour Duration: 2 Hours
  • Age Suitable For: 10+
  • Tour Pace: Fast
  • Start Time: Many Options

Speedboat Whale Watching (RIB)

This is one of the highest rated whale watching tours in Reykjavik on a RIB. It is basically identical to the RIB tour above but is another fantastic option if you would prefer to book through Viator and not Get Your Guide.

The tour comes with thermals, goggles, hats, and gloves as well as having a maximum group size of 12. The tour guide is exceptionally experienced and, as the group is smaller, will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about your surroundings and the animals that you can see. Check out this fantastic RIB whale wathcing experience here!

  • Start Time: 9am 11am 2pm

The Original Classic Whale Watching Tour (Ferry)

It’s called the original whale watching tour in Reykjavik and it certainly has the most reviews of any other tour available right now! It is a large ferry type boat with a maximum amount of travellers set at 150 people.

This is another fantastic option for budget savvy travellers but I would avoid a ferry if you are going during peak times (during holiday periods) as 150 people is a lot. Check out this exact tour right here!

  • Start Time: 9am 1pm

Whale Watching & Dolphins (Yacht)

This is another fantasitc Yacht experience with an very nice interior that includes a bar for refreshments. This company does actually run some tours on the Ameila Rose (our number 1 recommend tour) but, if you are going to go with this company, then see if you can get on the Harpa yacht as this is even smaller and has an even smaller group size, which is always nice. Check out prices and availability here!

  • Tour Duration: 2.5 Hours
  • Start Time: 1:15 pm

Small Group Whale Watching (RIB)

Another exceptionally high rated RIB whale watching tour in Reykjavik that offers full gear and an exceptional on board tour guide. This tour is very slightly more expensive that our top recommended RIB experience and this is the only reason it is not at the top. It is only around $10 more so if the other is fully booked then check out the availability of this tour right here!

  • Start Time: 10am 12pm 2pm 4pm

Read More: How To See The Puffins Of Iceland!

Whale Watching In The Midnight Sun (Ferry)

Fancy something a bit more unique? If you are going whale watching in Reykjavik during the summer months then you will be able to choose this cool midnight sun experience and watch the whales in the middle of the night!

Everything esle is essentially the same as the other ferry tours above but the beautiful golden hue at this time of year may make the entire experience that little bit more magical for you. Check out prices and availability here!

  • Start Time: 8:30 pm

Whale & Puffin Tour (RIB)

If you love puffins (why wouldn’t you) then this is a great tour to combine seeing the puffins in the summer months as well as the whales! You will go to see the puffins in their natural habitat and then zoom off into deeper waters to see the wahels in their feeding grounds. Best of both worlds! Check out prices and availability right here!

Whale Watching & Northern Lights Combo Tour (Ferry)

If you are in Iceland during the winter months (when the Northern Lights are observable) then you can combine a whale watching tour with a northern lights tour. They are not both on the boat, rather you go and see the whales during the day and then later on go on a northern lights hunt.

You could book these tours sepereatly but you will save a little bit of money combing them here so check out prices and availability now!

  • Tour Duration: 6 Hours
  • Tour Pace: Medium
  • Start Time: 9 am 1 pm

The Different Boats Explained

A RIB (rigid inflatable boat) is basically a small speed boat designed for speed across the water. These boats are extremely fast and usually have a maximum amount of passengers of 12. This makes them require less time to get to the whales feeding grounds.

It can be argued that a RIB is the best way of experiencing whale watching tours in Reykjavik. this is becasue you are closer to the water, closer to the whales, and you have the smallest group size. You also get the added thrill of travelling at high speeds across the water.

However, this does come with a caveat. RIB whale watching tours in Reykjavik are more expensive (around double), they are not suitable for anyone under 10, they are not the most comfortable of rides (understatement of the year), and they are not suitable for anyone with any back issues or who are pregnant.

If you love the speed, have the budget, and you are not a small child then absolutley the RIB is the option for you! Book our #1 rated RIB whale watching tour in Reykjavik here!

A yacht is basically a fancy ferry which has a nicer interior /exterior and usually a nice bar. The other benefit of choosing a yacht is they can take less people than the ferries so your tour is not going to be as packed.

Overall the yacht tours are only a little more than the ferry tours and you get that little bit more class for your experience. If that is not that important to you then check out the ferry below. If a budget option with a bit of style does appeal to you then check out our number 1 recommended yacht tour here!

This is the cheapest option and is essnetially exactly the same as the yacht option but with more people on a slightly less fancy boat. You will still get a place to buy refreshments and some seating indoors but the amount of people on the boat will roughly double to 150-200.

Going on a yacht means that it is very easy to move from one side of the boat to the other to maximise your chances of seeing a whale. However, on a ferry, this is going to be much more difficult. I genuinally do not think this is going to affect your whale watching tour in Reykjavik that much as the captains always swing the boat around to show both sides anyway.

If the most affordable option sounds good to you then check out our number 1 recommended ferry whale tour here!

What Can You See?

Minke whales.

Minke whales are the most common whale in all of Iceland so this is the whale you are most likely to see on your whale watching tours in Reykjavik.

You can see minke whales on any of the whale watching tours in reykjavik on this list

Humpback Whales

Humpack whales come to Iceland in great numbners during the summer months and they are the ones which, so famously, jump out of the water (breach). It is not the most common of sight to see on a whale watching tour but they do it so keep your eyes peeled!

Humpack are the most acrobatic of all the whales that you can see on a whale watching tours in reykjavik

Harbor Porpoises

These tiny adorable porpoises can be seen in large numbers but due to their size you may have to keep your eyes EXTRA peeled to see them!

Keep your eyes peeled for harbour porpoises during your whale watching tours in reykjavik

Everyone loves these adorable little colourful birds and, in the summer months, they are in Iceland in GREAT numbers. You should be able to many hundreds of them during this time!

In the summer months you can see these everywhere on a whale watching tours in reykjavik

When To Go Whale Watching In Reykjavik

You can go on whale watching tours in Reykjavik all year round however the best time to go has to be from April – September . At this time of year there are many more whales present of the coast of Iceland and you will almost be guarenteed to see many sightings.

Some of the great whales do stay throughout the winter months so the chances of sightings around Reykjavik are still good but much lower. The weather is also much colder so remember to wrap up VERY warm!

What To Take With You

Iceland is called Iceland for a reason so make sure you take some warm clothing, even in the summer months. We have a very good list of recommended clothing below so if you see anything you do not currently own then remember to click through the links to see prices and availability in your area!

HOT FEET Winter Boot Socks

If you're going to be wearing boots, especially in colder climates, then you need to grab yourself a decent set of cold-weather socks. These thermal socks from HOT FEET don't break the bank and will keep your feet warm in some of the coldest weather. You also get 8 pairs!

100% Cotton Cable Sweater

Cotton is the way to go to keep you warm on cold nights staring up at the beautiful starry sky, surrounded by ice and snow. This is from Amazon Basics so you're not paying a premium for a famous brand but you're still getting that thick cotton quality.

Fleece Lined Long Johns & Base Layer

If you really feel the cold but already have a decent jacket and insulated trousers , then you have to check out these fleece-lined thermal long johns and top base layer. These will fit under your outer clothes and give a massive increase to your warmth whilst paired with other quality winter wear. A must-have for someone who struggles with the cold.

Classic Ear Warmers

Jade prefers wearing ear muffs because it gives her more options to style her hair whilst also keeping her little ears warm. If that sounds like something you might struggle with then check out these fantastic ear warmers that come in a variety of colours!

KINGSBOM -40F° Waterproof & Windproof Thermal Gloves

If you need a pair of no-nonsense, warm, waterproof, and windproof gloves that will work with your touch devices then we highly recommend checking out these gloves. I recommend getting slightly larger than you think as the sizing is on the small size.

C.C Cable Knit Fleece Lined Beanie

This beautiful cable knit beanie comes in a huge variety of colours and will keep your head warm in some of the most difficult of conditions. If you will be wearing your hood up a lot then I recommend getting one without a pom.

MOERDENG Women's Mountain Waterproof/Windproof Jacket

If you are thinking of going into colder climates then you have to make sure you have a suitable jacket to go along for the ride. This ski jacket is waterproof and windproof which helps keep out the cold and a fleece lining which helps to keep in the warmth. The jacket is also extremely affordable compared to other brands meaning your comfort is no longer going to cost you an arm and a leg!

CAMEL CROWN Fleece Lined Waterproof/Windproof Pants

People often buy really good gloves, hats, boots, and jackets when they are going into colder climates but neglect the need for a good pair of waterproof/windproof trousers to go along with it. These brilliant fleece-lined trousers will keep you warm, dry, and comfortable for those long days in the freezing cold.

The Best Whale Watching in Iceland (with Sea Trips Reykjavik)

Posted on Published: March 5, 2024  - Last updated: July 27, 2024

Humpback whale tail exposed during whale watching in Iceland

Some of the best whale watching in Iceland takes place near the Old Harbor of Reykjavik , the country’s capital.

Since most travelers will either pass through Reykjavik or use it as their home base for visiting Iceland, this makes whale watching an easy activity to incorporate into any itinerary.

During my two week road trip across Iceland’s southern coast, I was mostly set on exploring glaciers, chasing waterfalls and checking out the beautiful black sand beaches found in this region.

However, Iceland is also known as one of the best places in the world for whale watching due to its unique location between the chilly Arctic and Atlantic Oceans.

Naturally, I wanted to include this activity on my itinerary. While you’re likely to find a number of operators offering whale watching tours from Reykjavik, I ended up going with Sea Trips Reykjavik and was lucky enough to enjoy an afternoon aboard the stylish Amelia Rose vessel.

Amelia Rose Whale Watching ship in Reykjavik Iceland

While there are multiple companies in the area offering whale watching excursions, after doing extensive research and spending the day on one of their ships, I can strongly recommend the experience I had with Sea Trips Reykjavik.

Not only did they successfully lead us to what felt like an endless number of whale sightings , but the ship is beautiful, stocked with a full bar and offers a substantial amount of viewing deck space so I never felt crowded out by other guests.

Although no whale watching guide can fully guarantee whale sightings, the team at Sea Trips Reykjavik is experienced and knowledgeable which means you’ll have excellent odds.

As you spot whales in Reykjavik Old Harbor, the spotter will also provide lots of interesting information and facts about the whales you’re seeing or could potentially see.

Throughout the remainder of this post I’ll answer a number of common questions that travelers might have about how to best enjoy whale watching in Reykjavik Iceland!

Where is Sea Trips Reykjavik located?

Whale watching excursions with Sea Trips Reykjavík depart centrally from Downtown, near the Old Harbor. Your ticket should provide the physical address, but when I visited there was a sign on their office door instructing me to check in at the restaurant across the street.

If you drive yourself, there's a paid parking lot across the street from the Old Harbor or instructions included in your reservation with how to access free parking near their office.

You'll spot a lot of other vessels while walking through Reykjavik Harbor

The area will likely be busy with other whale watching tours and restaurant goers so you should anticipate having a difficult time to park . In general, parking in Reykjavik isn't great.

If you're staying in Reykjavik, keep in mind that Sea Trips does offer a pickup service. Inquire with them directly to see if your hotel is eligible for pickup to avoid the parking headaches.

Where should I stay when visiting Iceland?

Most travelers to Iceland will want to spend at least a couple nights in the capital city of Reykjavik. This serves as a natural home base for starting or ending your trip given it's proximity to Keflavik International Airport.

This will make it easy to access your whale watching activity but also allow you to enjoy other activities that the city has to offer. Reykjavik is home to a great walking food tour and also makes for the best jumping off point to do the volcano hike near Fagradalsfjall .

Exploring Reykjavik Harbor by sea also offers amazing city views!

If you haven't booked your accommodations yet, you can browse deals on hotels in Reykjavik here . It also might be worth checking out the Reykjavik Lights Hotel , which is one of the better reviewed hotels in the area.

While I spent a total of two nights in Reykjavik, I stayed at the Eco Campsite in my camper van. The best way to experience Iceland involves moving away from Reykjavik, and the most economical and flexible way to do that is with a camper van!

a man standing next to a car

My camper van rental with Go Campers allowed me to explore Iceland's south coast over the span of two weeks!

I rented my camper van with Go Campers and had a really great experience. The heater worked great which kept me plenty warm during the frigid winter nights and I was able to reserve plenty of add ons like extra pillows, a premium comforter, French press so I could make my own coffee, and more!

Where is the best place in Iceland for whale watching?

When considering logistics, Reykjavik tends to be the best overall option for visitors hoping to go whale watching during their trip to Iceland.

a whale in the water

A humpback whale releases his spray into the air

However, if time is not a factor, the town of Husavik in Northern Iceland is generally considered to have slightly better odds of spotting whale activity. Keep in mind that Husavik is a six hour drive north of Reykjavik and so it won't make sense unless you're already planning to visit Northern Iceland.

What months are best for whale watching in Iceland?

Peak whale watching season in Iceland is generally considered to be the summer months, between June and August .

However, due to Iceland's unique geographic positioning in the rich feeding waters of the Northern Atlantic, it is possible to spot whales here year round.

How likely are you to see whales in Iceland?

Sea Trips Reykjavik claims to have a success rate of around 90% spotting whales during the summer months. They do concede that this success rate is slightly lower in the winter, but a specific number isn't provided.

With that said, my winter whale watching trip during the month of February was extremely eventful. We saw quite a few humpback whales that were extremely active. Once we spotted our first whale, we enjoyed a full 90 minutes of whale activity without any real breaks in the action!

a person looking at a whale swimming in the water

It felt like every time I looked up there was a Humpback Whale popping up from somewhere!

While no whale watching operator can fully guarantee a sighting , you should pick a company that provides suitable compensation if you don't see any whales.

Sea Trips Reykjavik has a great program where anyone who doesn't spot a whale on their excursion will receive a complimentary voucher to attend an available tour of their choice within the next three years.

Can you see whales in Reykjavik?

The most common whale sightings near Reykjavik include minke and humpback whales, dolphins and porpoises. During my activity we primarily saw humpback whales and a few seals floating around the harbor.

a seal swimming in the water

You'll have a chance of seeing seals and other wildlife during your whale watching activity!

Sea Trips Reykjavik also suggests it's possible to spot Orcas (killer whales) and a variety of other sea life in the area. Whales are said to be equally active in the mornings and afternoons so the timing of your departure shouldn't impact your chances either.

What should I bring when whale watching in Iceland?

While the ships interior stays heated, you'll need to bring enough layers and warm clothing gear to tolerate between one and two hours of time on the ships deck watching the whales.

During the summer months, this shouldn't be too much of an issue. However, if you partake in this activity during the winter like I did, you're going to need proper attire if you hope to endure the chilly temps and windy harbor conditions.

a whale tail above water

You'll want to dress warm to maximize your time outside watching whales in the Reykjavik Harbor

For winter visitors, I'd recommend wearing multiple layers that you can easily remove while spending time inside the ship. A wool hat, heavy gloves and the warmest boots you own will go a long way. You'll probably want to have on a couple pairs of warm socks as well.

I'd also suggest stashing some light snacks and water in your bag as well to make the experience more comfortable. The Amelia Rose does offer a full bar, so you can enjoy that during your time aboard as well.

And remember to bring your digital camera and binoculars to spot blows from the whales and get clear photos!

How long does whale watching with Sea Trips Reykjavik last?

The entire whale watching experience with Sea Trips Reykjavik typically lasts between 3 and 4 hours from start to finish.

You can expect between one and two hours of actual whale sighting time once you get to the area outside of the harbor where the whales tend to feed.

a boat on the water

Although colder in the winter, the landscapes are beautiful when covered in snow

A nice thing about whale watching from Reykjavik is how short the ride is out to the feeding area. Enjoying this activity in other parts of the world can involve a much longer boat ride out to the action!

During your trip the boat will sail beyond the Old Harbor, pass by the Harpa Reykjavik Concert Hall and other small islands such as Faxafloi, Engey, Lundey (known as Puffin Island) and Videy Island.

Do I need a reservation to go whale watching?

As soon as you've decided on your travel dates, I'd suggest making a reservation for whale watching. This is especially true if you're visiting during Iceland's peak summer tourism months.

a whale swimming in the water

Some of the whales were curious and popping up really close to our ship

There are limited space on ships (through Sea Trips or otherwise) and lots of people hoping to have an intimate whale experience. Ships will sell out so avoid waiting until the last minute to reserve your spot!

It would be a real shame to travel all the way to Iceland and miss out on this experience because you forgot to make a reservation.

Is it expensive to go whale watching in Iceland?

On a per person basis, the larger whale watching vessel prices are usually quite reasonable . I'd suggest checking current activity pricing here .

a buoy in the water

You won't spend too much time sailing away from Reykjavik before encountering whales

You'll also see whale watching tours being marketed that zip around on smaller RIB speedboats. These tours are generally more expensive, less comfortable, but do allow you to get much closer to the whales since you'll be sitting right on the water.

Is whale watching in Reykjavik Iceland worth it?

Whale watching is a great activity to enjoy during your travels to Reykjavik, Iceland. Even though you aren’t guaranteed to see whales during this activity, the success rate that Sea Trips Reykjavik has played a major role in my decision to book with them, and I wasn’t disappointed.

Photo of a humpback whale tail in Reykjavik Harbor, Iceland

We were able to enjoy nearly two full hours of humpback whale activity, saw tons of Icelandic birds and even a few seals floating around the harbor.

Even though whales tend to be less active in the winter months around Reykjavik, your odds of seeing them is still very high. Just make sure you dress appropriately so you can endure the chilly temperatures while hanging out on the ships deck!

Beyond the whales, you’ll be able to take in stunning views of Reykjavik and the islands that make of the geography of this area from sea.

If you’re interested in booking this activity for yourself, I’d suggest heading over to the Sea Trips Reykjavik booking site . For  help planning travel abroad  or for  tips to save on airfare  be sure to check out my guides at the links shown here.

For any big time whale watching enthusiasts, be sure to read my post about whale watching in Tromso, Norway . It’s a popular feeding ground for Orcas and we saw a super active pod of them hunting in the Arctic waters during my visit.

I also created a short highlight video about whale watching in Reykjavik that you can watch on my YouTube channel.

If you’re looking for other unique winter Iceland activities to partake in, consider checking out my posts on the following topics:

The Reykjavik Whale Watching Tour

sea trips reykjavik whale watching

Description

Join this whale watching tour to see the incredible wealth of marine wildlife just off Reykjavík’s shores. You’ll journey into the famous Faxafloi Bay in search of these amazing creatures of the deep. This tour is a must for nature-lovers and fits perfectly into a busy holiday - a 3-3.5 hour trip departing straight from the capital city’s Old Harbour.

You will arrive at the harbour in good time for your departure, either by making your way there yourself or through a pick-up you can request during booking. If taking this trip during summer, you will have a choice between two boats, which you can select based on your sense of adventure and the nature of your group.

This Classic Whale Watching tour sails year-round and is one of the largest whale watching boats in Iceland. It has a fantastic educational and interactive focus on board, where you can learn more about the whales. Alternatively, if you’d rather sit back and relax before venturing outside for a glimpse the ship hosts a great cafe with a variety of drinks and snack options.

You can expect to spend 3-3.5 hours out on the ocean looking for whales. As you travel out, your guide will point out the natural features surrounding the capital; in clear weather, you should be able to see both the Reykjanes Peninsula and the Snæfellsnes peninsula, as well as the ‘whale fjord’, otherwise called Hvalfjörður. These views will show you a quick snapshot into the diverse landscapes of Iceland with mountains, fjords, glaciers and lava fields.

Four species can be regularly seen on these tours: harbour porpoises, white-beaked dolphins, minke whales and humpback whales. Other species that are occasionally seen are orcas (or killer whales), pilot whales and basking sharks. On top of these incredible animals, during summer you can expect to see a wealth of seabirds, most notably the puffin. Your experienced guides can answer any questions you have as you search for and marvel over these majestic creatures.

Each tour yields entirely different results. The animals’ behaviour changes throughout the day; you might catch them breaching, socialising, feeding or just basking near the surface. If by chance, you are not lucky enough to see a marine mammal, you will have another opportunity to take this tour for free until you do.

You will return to Reykjavík after three hours on the sea, hopefully after many exciting sightings and an up-close look at some of Iceland’s most incredible creatures. Because of the convenience and length of this tour, there will still be plenty of opportunities to make the most of the rest of your day, either on another tour or within the capital.

Do not miss your chance to see the magnificent whales, dolphins and porpoises of Iceland. Set sail into Faxaflói Bay for your opportunity. Check availability by choosing a date and book your Whale Watching adventure.

One of my favorite activities from our visit to Iceland. It’s so much more fun taking the speedboat out than the larger boats. We saw two whale species as well as a pod of dolphins. It’s not the focus of the trip, but we also saw more puffins than I saw on my separately booked puffin tour. Incredible!
