Phil Mickelson is going back to senior tour with a shot at historic feat

1248751495

Phil Mickelson warms up on the practice green during a practice round prior to the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club.

Tom Pennington

Nearly 30 years into his pro career, Phil Mickelson seemingly has very few “firsts” left to chase. The biggie, of course, is the U.S. Open victory that has painfully eluded him and denied the World Golf Hall of Famer the career Grand Slam.

But Mickelson has found new competitive life in the 50-and-older set, and he’s going to have a chance to make history next week (Feb. 26-28) in the Cologuard Classic in Tucson, Ariz., on the PGA Tour Champions. The tour announced on Friday the field of 81 in the second event on its schedule in 2021, and Mickelson tops the list of 20 major champions competing. He’s the only one, however, who can set a new tour standard. If Mickelson wins, he’ll become the first player on a PGA Tour-sanctioned tour to win his first three career starts. Let ’ s make this clear: No player on the PGA Tour, Champions Tour or Korn Ferry Tour has done it. Those are pretty juicy bragging rights to dangle in front of Lefty.

MORE: Here are the best storylines for senior tour in 2021

Mickelson, who turned 50 last June, won in his first two senior appearances at the Charles Schwab Series at Ozarks National and Dominion Energy Charity Classic in 2020. Lefty opened his senior career l ast August by shooting a 61 and won his inaugural outing by four shots. Almost two months later, he beat another Masters champion, Mike Weir, by three strokes.

The return to Tucson, where the venue is Omni Tucson National, figures to provide good vibes for Mickelson. He’s already made history there once, capturing the 1991 Northern Telecom Open as an amateur while attending Arizona State. ( No amateur has won on the tour since. ) Tucson National shared host responsibilities that year with TPC Starr Pass, and Mickelson shot 71 in the second round.

Mickelson, who has enjoyed the senior tour’s wider fairways and friendlier hole placements, is in need of a confidence-boosting week because he’s struggled to be competitive in the current PGA Tour season. In eight starts, he’s missed the cut four times and hasn’t finished better than T-44. Mickelson is coming off what has to be a terrible disappointment—being gone for the weekend at his beloved Pebble Beach, where he shot 74 in the first round before imploding with an 80 at Spyglass Hill.

The buzz earlier this week about Mickelson, created by comments from his manager, Steve Loy, was that he might be headed for the broadcast booth in the next few years.

Bernhard Langer is the defending champion of the Cologuard, winning the event last year at age 62.

Senior Players Championship, Steve Stricker

Steve Stricker has done it again. He won the Senior Players Championship Sunday, giving him three Senior Tour majors on the season. Stricker beat David Toms by three strokes after shooting a final round 66.

Incredibly, he has now won three of the four majors this season with one to go.

He previously won The Regions Tradition in May and the Senior PGA Championship a week later. He also finished runner-up to Bernhard Langer at the U.S. Senior Open.

It’s mind-blowing how good Stricker is playing right now. At Firestone Country Club in Akron, OH, he shot 65-73-65-66 to post an 11-under total score. Harrison Frazar, K.J. Choi and Ernie Els finished T3 at 7-under.

Stricker outlasted Frazar, who shared the lead heading into Sunday’s round. Frazar shot a 70 on the day as he fell short.

The Wisconsin native is steamrolling the competition this season. He opened his final round with a birdie on the par-4 1st hole. Stricker made another birdie on the par-3 7th to go out in 33 strokes. His strong play continued on the back nine. Stricker made a birdie on the par-4 10th.

He coughed up a stroke by making a bogey on the par-4 14th but quickly got that back when he made back-to-back birdies on the next two holes.

He never relented down the stretch to capture another title.

With this victory, Stricker has won four of his last six starts. There is one major left for the Senior Tour, along with the Charles Schwab Playoffs. Stricker already has five victories on the season. How many more will he add?

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Steve Stricker squeezed daughter and temporary caddie Izzi just a little harder after finishing a comeback and winning the Senior PGA Championship.

Now a six-time senior major winner, Stricker shared this one with a high school golf champion in Wisconsin, where Stricker also was born and raised.

“She looks up to what I do for a living, and she plays pretty dang good golf herself,” Stricker said. “It’s a lot of fun to have her with me. It’s special.”

Stricker beat Padraig Harrington on the first hole of a playoff for the Senior PGA title Sunday, giving the 56-year-old American a sweep of the first two majors of the season.

Harrington forced the playoff with a short birdie putt on the par-5 18th, but put his drive in the replay of the 72nd hole in deep grass on the right side of the fairway.

After a failed attempt to hack the ball out, the 51-year-old Irishman dropped to what he said was about 270 yards away and put a 5-wood within 15 feet .

Stricker, who stayed away from his driver and laid up both times on 18, missed a second consecutive putt to win, but Harrington couldn’t make the par putt to extend the playoff.

“If I hole the putt, we could say it was one of the best shots I ever hit,” Harrington said. “The fact that I didn’t hole the putt, we’ll forget about it. Golf is cruel.”

Stricker and Harrington, who was trying to become the first wire-to-wire winner of the Senior PGA since Rocco Mediate in 2016, finished 18 under. Stricker shot 3-under 69 and Harrington 70.

Stricker’s win came two weeks after a second consecutive victory in the Regions Tradition.

Harrington’s first PGA Tour Champions title was the U.S. Senior Open last year, when he held off Stricker by a stroke in a duel of the opposing Ryder Cup captains from 2021.

They were at it again in the first event on the Fields Ranch East course at the new headquarters of the PGA of America. The venue in Frisco, about 35 miles north of Dallas, is set to host the PGA Championship in 2027 and 2034 with talk of the Ryder Cup coming in the late 2030s.

“This means a lot,” Stricker said. “I spent a lot of time with the PGA of America during the Ryder Cup. To play in another PGA next year I think will be a lot of fun, too.”

Stewart Cink, playing with Stricker and Harrington but never threatening to crash their two-man battle, made a 60-footer for birdie 2 at No. 17 and eagled the par-5 18th to finish two shots back.

A week after turning 50, Cink finished his Champions debut with a 69. He intends to keep competing on the PGA Tour for now.

“This is no pushover golf course,” Cink said. “I’m taking a lot of confidence down the road from here. I would be lying if I told you I wasn’t looking forward to my next PGA Tour Champions. I don’t know when it’s going to be, but I’m looking forward to it.”

South Korean and Dallas resident Y.E. Yang, the 2009 PGA champion, was alone in fourth at 11 under after a 70. Defending champion Steven Alker shot 71 to finish 9 under along with Miguel Angel Jimenez and Darren Clarke.

All five of Stricker’s previous senior major wins were by six shots, but this time he came from behind, erasing a five-shot deficit in the final nine holes of the third round to set up another two-player showdown with Harrington two years after the U.S. rout of Harrington’s crew at the Ryder Cup.

Stricker, who extended his Champions tour record with a 49th consecutive round of par or better, took a two-shot lead with a chip-in for birdie at the 220-yard, par-3 13th to answer a bogey at 12.

Harrington narrowed the deficit to one with a birdie at the short par-4 15th. After both made bogey at 17, Harrington missed an eagle attempt at 18 to give Stricker a putt for the win. Stricker missed from about 18 feet, and Harrington made a short putt to force the playoff.

“Steve is probably the toughest guy you could ever play on a Sunday,” Harrington said. “He has to have the best wedge game in the world. He’s a fabulous putter, he’s a fabulous chipper. In a match play situation, he’s somebody you don’t want to be playing against.”

The lead began slipping away from Harrington on Saturday when a bathroom break started a sequence that led to a double-bogey, his first over-par hole of the tournament, at the par-4 16th.

Harrington had another adventure on the same hole in the final round when a wayward tee shot hit a fan in the head down the left side, caroming almost all the way back to the fairway.

After putting his second shot on the green, Harrington greeted the fan sitting in a cart and holding what appeared be a napkin on his head wound. After giving him a signed glove, Harrington took out his wallet and gave the fan $300.

“It never really seems adequate to give a guy a glove,” Harrington said. “He’s a grown man, like what’s he want with a glove with my signature? So I thought, he said his wife was inside, but, please take your wife out for dinner on me. I hope I gave him enough for dinner — $300 should cover it, wouldn’t it?”

Five things to know as the PGA's senior tour heads back to the desert

senior tour news

The news of a new PGA Tour Champions tournament in the Coachella Valley next year is certainly good for the image of the desert as a golf magnet, for both recreational and professional players. When the LPGA announced it was leaving the desert after 51 years, the Coachella Valley was down to a single televised professional golf tournament, The American Express on the PGA Tour. With the addition of the Galleri Classic, the desert is back to two televised events for 2023.

But it is possible that even golf fans in the desert aren’t all that up to date on the senior tour. After all, the tour hasn’t been in the desert since 1997 with the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf at PGA West. And the tour certainly fights with the LPGA for media attention after the men’s regular tour.

So with 11 months before the seniors hit the first tee at the Dinah Shore Tournament Course, here are a few things you might want to know about the tour behind the desert’s new event:

There are winners you don’t know

Yes, there are Hall of Famers who win. But there are also players who were journeymen at best on the regular tour who pop up and win on the senior circuit. The last PGA Tour Champions event three weeks ago in Mississippi was won by Steve Alker, a tour rookie from New Zealand who hasn’t played on the regular PGA Tour since 2017 and who has been playing on the Korn Ferry Tour the last few years. In coming weeks defending champions on the Champions Tour will include Dicky Pride, Stephen Dodd and Doug Barron. There is good golf from players who you have only passing knowledge of on the senior tour.

The stars do win, though

Bernhard Langer is the biggest winner on tour this days with 43 wins at the age of 64, just two wins short of Hale Irwin’s record of 45. Phil Mickelson has four wins in limited play in senior events, and who knows how limited that play will be in the next few years. But other winners last year in the last year have been Jim Furyk, Lee Janzen, Steve Stricker and Retief Goosen.

There is no cut

The PGA Tour Champions has limited fields, with 78 players to play in the Galleri Classic in Rancho Mirage next spring. With far fewer players than a PGA Tour event, there is no need for a cut during the tournament. So all 78 players who start will get to play on Sunday, assuming there are no injuries or illnesses. So a bad first round doesn’t necessarily doom a players, because there are guaranteed two more rounds.

There are new players every year

Alker, Brian Gay and David Duval are the names of some of the golfers who have turned 50 within the last year and are playing full seasons this year. Before the Galleri Classic next spring, golfers like Justin Leonard and Notah Begay will turn 50. There is no way to know how much, if any, golf those players will play on the PGA Tour Champions next year, but there is always fresh blood in the 50-and-over set.

The golf is better than you might think

If these guys could play on the PGA Tour event week, the would, so don’t expect that caliber of play from the PGA Tour Champions golfers. But with the right course setup, there are birdies and eagles to be had from the seniors. The Dinah Shore Tournament Course will stretch out to more than 7,000 yards for the seniors, but it certainly won’t be 7,400 yards. So the golfers will be able to make birdies and please the galleries. Just last month Goosen won the Hoag Classic in Newport Beach at 15-under par for 54 holes, and that’s crowd-pleasing golf.

Jack nicklaus: tiger woods will ‘kill everybody’ on senior tour; liv a ‘powerful addition’.

  • Brentley Romine ,
  • Brentley Romine

Jack Nicklaus appeared on “Golf Central” Wednesday evening to discuss a variety of topics in the sport of golf.

Part of the discussion, naturally, centered on Tiger Woods. Nicklaus said he still believes that Woods, even at age 48 and after all the injuries, is capable of “doing anything he wants to do.” He is delighted to see him back competing and called Woods a “great addition” to the PGA Tour’s policy board. He just doesn’t see Woods passing, or even getting to, 18 majors.

“If he remained healthy I think he would’ve gotten it, but he didn’t remain healthy,” Nicklaus said. "... I feel bad for him.”

Nicklaus then added of his major record: “Oh, I think it will probably stand for a while.”

He also said this of Woods, whom he expects to add another competitive chapter in a couple years: “I think Tiger will play the senior tour. He’d be able to get in a cart, and he’ll absolutely kill everybody.”

Here are a few more snippets from Nicklaus’ segment:

The golf ball rollback: “It’s about time they rolled it back...”

The ongoing PGA Tour-LIV Golf talks: “I talked to Jay [Monahan] about three weeks ago. We were talking, and I said, ‘Jay, don’t tell me what you’re doing. I don’t want to know because Rich Lerner is going to ask me a question about it, and if I don’t know, then I don’t have to answer the question.’ So, I don’t really know where they’re going. I hope that they get this thing together all in the best interest of the game of golf. The LIV thing has been a powerful addition to the game, probably impacted a lot more than we thought it was going to, but it has, and it probably will continue to do so.”

On Monahan specifically: “I know Jay’s taken a beating, but I’ve always been in full support of Jay. Everything Jay’s done has been in the best interest of golf and the Tour.”

On his best shots: All 1-irons. (He lists three during his interview.)

On his toughest rival: Not Trevino, not Watson, not Player, not Palmer. Who then? You’ll have to watch the clip above.

#daretodream, more information about the mr vegas 2024 world seniors snooker championship.

The four referees who will be officiating at the Crucible for the Mr Vegas 2024 World Seniors Snooker Championship have been announced. They are Michaela Tabb, Leo Scullion, Tatiana Woollaston and Mark Beale, who has been officiation at the 900 all season. Senior snooker is in safe hands!

It has also been announced that there will be a 30 seconds shot clock. Jason Francis has explained that this decision was taken to prevent players from getting bogged down and matches from dragging unnecessarily. Channel 5 will broadcast the event live in the UK – which is great – and they are a commercial channel. They need “time slots” for advertising and that of course adds to the duration of the matches. So it’s important that matches stay “fluent”.

Seniors Mr Vegas Heads to Goffs

Following the success of the first Mr Vegas Seniors event , the “concept” moves to Ireland! Indeed the Irish fans will have the opportunity to attend the second Seniors Mr Vegas event “live” in no other than the the iconic Goffs arena … and support their very own Ken Doherty and Fergal O’Brien! I suppose that Denis Taylor will count as “Irish” under the circumstances as well.

senior tour news

The event will be played under the “900” format:

  • Each match consists of just one frame
  • Each frame lasts (maximum) 900 seconds ie 15 minutes
  • There is a 20-second shot clock in operation
  • Players must hit a cushion or pot a ball with each shot
  • Any foul will give the offender’s opponent ball-in-hand

This event will be broadcast live on Channel 5 for UK and Irish viewers.

Goffs is really a special arena. Its atmosphere is unique. The fans literally surround the circular playing arena. There is no hiding place. It’s a pressure cooker! Thrill guaranteed!

About the future “900” Senior events

The first “900” Senior event concluded yesterday, with Stephen Hendry once again beating Jimmy White in the final. It was the first ever snooker event on Channel 5 and it was a huge success.

It also generated a record level of interest on this blog.

I have got questions about how to get tickets for the next similar event. I can’t answer that as this was a first and nothing had been planned yet for the future. Given the huge success I’m expecting a sequel obviously …

Great News for Seniors Snooker … 24.10.2023

Finally! Great news for Seniors snooker and, hopefully, the start of a great season!

Here is the announcement by WPBSA :

New Agreement to Boost World Seniors Snooker Tour World Seniors Snooker (WSS)  is delighted to announce the agreement of a new multi-year agreement with World Snooker Tour (WST) which will underpin the continued growth of the WSS Tour.  The new deal will see up to five events staged year around the world by WSS, which will continue to be governed by snooker’s world governing body the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA). During the current 2023/24 season, events will be open to all amateur players aged 40 or over, as well as professionals who are 45 or over as of 1 June 2024 and ranked outside of the top 64 at the start of this season. From next season, all players must be aged 45 or older. The first event under the new agreement is planned to take place in December 2023 and will be broadcast on mainstream television. Jason Francis, World Seniors Snooker Chairman said: “ Following today’s announcement I am pleased to be able to continue our important work alongside the WPBSA which has seen us provide vital opportunities for older players to be able to extend their snooker career s. “ I would like to thank both organisations for their cooperation and support and look forward to the announcement of a number of exciting events soon .” Jason Ferguson, WPBSA Chairman said: “ As a members association the WPBSA sees the organisation of a successful World Seniors Tour as a fundamental element of our events structure . “ We have seen in recent years with performances by greats including Jimmy White and Ken Doherty, as well as seasoned professionals such as David Lilley, Lee Walker and Peter Lines, that these players still have a great deal to offer our sport as they reach the end of their WST careers . “ It has also been pleasing to see the growth of seniors snooker around the world, which has seen many continental champions earn their place at World Seniors already in recent years and this will continue to play a major role in our strategy moving forwards. ” Further announcements about upcoming events will follow shortly at  seniorssnooker.com

This was shared yesterday and it really made my day!

I can now share this… the reason why there was no event planned/announced in the recent months was that the agreement between the snooker governing body and the chair of the Seniors snooker, allowing pros over 45 to compete on the seniors tour had expired and a new agreement needed to be negotiated. It wasn’t straightforward but here it is!

Without such agreement, players like Jimmy White, Ken Doherty or Stephen Hendry would not be allowed to compete on the Seniors tour, and without recognisable household names and Legends, marketing the Seniors events was an extremely difficult task.

Now the Seniors can go forward and grow. Happy days!

Good News about the Seniors Tour

It’s been a while … but eventually i’s good news.

After the last Seniors World Championship, we got no news about the World Seniors Tour, no provisional calendar for this season, no invitation to register for qualifiers… nothing.

Instead, Jason Francis has been involved in a lot of newer projects: Seniors Darts, the 900 and more… Many, me included, became worried that the World Seniors Snooker Tour would disappear. Clearly, there were some issues.

Yesterday, Jason Francis, posted this on social media

Keep the faith… we’re not done yet! #Daretodream

The announcement triggered a lot of positive comments, and, of course, questions.

Here is one comment by Barry Pinches, with Jason Francis’s answer

Pinches/Json FB 5.8.2022

Of course the other Jason he is mentionning is Jason Ferguson. That’s reassuring and definitely good news! Hopefully, we will know more and get a “calendar” very soon.

Changes to the qualifying process for upcoming events

This press release was shared by the Seniors World Tour on social media

PRESS RELEASE Today the World Seniors Snooker Tour announces some changes to the Qualifying criteria for the upcoming events in December 2021 and February 2022. These changes are immediate and follow lengthy consultations with the players commissions of both the WPBSA and World Seniors and the WPBSA Board. These changes apply to this season only at this stage as a trial, a decision on whether to adopt them for the tour will be taken after the conclusion of the 2022 World Seniors Snooker Championship. The changes are: For the World Seniors Qualifier in December (14-19) no current professional players will be eligible for entry which means that two Amateur players will progress from that event to the 2022 World Seniors Snooker Championship which will be held at the Crucible Theatre between the 4-8th May 2022. For the World Seniors Qualifier in February (8-13) no amateur players will be eligible for entry which means that two Professional players will progress from that event to the 2022 World Seniors Snooker Championship. The following amateur players have already secured their places in the final event and so will also not be eligible to enter the December Event. Those players are Patrick Wallace, Michael Judge, Gary Filtness, Wayne Cooper, Bob Chaperon, Frank Sarsfield and Darren Morgan. Jason Francis, Chairman of World Seniors said, “We must listen to our players and never be afraid to make bold decisions when needed. Its important the tour provides opportunities for both professional and amateur senior players. With some of the very best over 40 Amateur players in the world already in Sheffield Decembers event represents a fantastic opportunity for any snooker player over 40 to walk out at the Crucible live on TV” Players over 40 on or before 14th December 2021 can enter now here https://www.snookerlegends.co.uk/WSS_dec21_registration.html #daretodream

Personally I think that those changes are good as they guarantee that both older professionals and amateurs will be present at those important events.

Some information about next season

WPBSA has today published the following announcement :

New Qualifying Dates Announced for 2022 World Seniors Championship World Seniors Snooker (WSS) has today announced the dates for two new qualifying tournaments which will provide all players over-40 with the opportunity to earn a place at the Crucible Theatre next spring. Held at the Crucible Theatre since 2019, the World Seniors Snooker Championship is set to return to the home of snooker in 2022 with an all-new 24 player format aimed at providing more senior players with the opportunity to compete at the iconic venue than ever before. To complete the field, qualifying tournaments will be held from 14-19 December 2021 and 8-13 February 2022, each with two prized places on offer to compete in Sheffield. The four successful qualifiers will join an all-star field which is set to include the likes of defending champion David Lilley, four-time world seniors champion Jimmy White and former UK Seniors champion Ken Doherty. Both qualifying tournaments will be held at the Crucible Sports and Social Club in Reading, which is a recognised EPSB 147 Club and will be the official qualifying venue for the WSS Tour this season. It has today also been announced that the scheduled Seniors Masters and Irish Masters events will now not take place in 2022 . Although it is recognised that this decision will come as a disappointment to fans in Ireland and London, during what remains a challenging climate to stage events of this size, the Board has taken the responsible decision to focus on successfully delivering both the World and UK Championship tournaments at this time. The news does mean that all players who had previously qualified for either the Masters or Irish Masters tournaments will now be invited to the Crucible to compete at next year’s World Seniors Championship. These players are: Patrick Wallace, Michael Judge, Wayne Cooper, Gary Filtness, Darren Morgan, Bob Chaperon and Rory McLeod. Further information regarding the qualifying tournaments for the World Seniors Championship qualifiers, including how to enter, will be released soon.

We are going through difficult times and there are still a lot of uncertainties regarding the coming months. The governing body is doing its best to deliver quality events whilst keeping everyone safe.

Seniors Q-School 2021 – Two more spots at the Crucible for the grabs

A second Seniors Q-school will be held this spring, with two spots to play at the Crucible for the grabs.

Here is the announcement on WPBSA website :

A further two places at the 2021 World Seniors Snooker Championship will be claimed at the latest Qualifying School to be organised by the ROKiT Phones World Seniors Snooker Tour. To be held from 27 March – 4 April 2021 at the Crucible Sports and Social Club in Reading, the event follows the successful staging of Seniors Q School back in January which saw eight places at upcoming major tournaments decided. As in January, the event will be run strictly in accordance with guidelines from the DCMS and the EPSB with full COVID-19 testing protocols in place. Jason Francis has put huge efforts and energy into getting the Seniors playing despite the restrictions, and “his” events have actually been the only non-professional events allowed to go on. So, if you believe in your dream and want the Seniors tour to continue to be succesful, support it and get your cue out…

As you will see there is an interesting mix in there: great players from the past, recent past and current main tour seniors players and very talented amateurs.

Unfortunately, no Asian players are able to compete this time around.

It has been a colossal effort from Jason and the WSS team to get this on its feet. Thank you to all those who made this possible, and good luck to all players.

Gordon sargent will defer his pga tour card, return to vanderbilt for senior season, share this article.

Professional golf is going to have to wait a bit longer to see one of the game’s premier amateur players take his next step.

Gordon Sargent announced Thursday he was returning to Vanderbilt for his senior year. The news may come as a surprise to some, considering Sargent has a PGA Tour card secured thanks to PGA Tour University Accelerated, but he’ll defer his status until next summer, meaning the amateur game gets another year with one of its best players.

“It’s been an honor to represent this university alongside my teammates and coaches, and I look forward to continuing to compete – and further my education – at this amazing place that has given so much to me,” Sargent said in a release. “I would like to thank everyone who has supported me on this journey, and I’m excited for this final chapter at Vanderbilt.”

Sargent, from Birmingham, Alabama, is one of the game’s longest hitters with his astounding speed. He earned the final of 20 points in the PGA Tour U Accelerated program in the fall when he was on the United States team at the World Amateur Team Championship in Abu Dhabi.

As of now, Sargent is the only player who has earned 20 points via PGA Tour U Accelerated since the program was introduced two years ago .

Sargent, No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, won the NCAA individual championship as a freshman and went 4-0 at the Walker Cup last fall at St. Andrews. He also earned low amateur honors at the 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club.

This year, Sargent has one win, coming in his latest start at the Mason Rudolph Championship. The 2023-23 Golfweek Player of the Year has posted four top-five finishes during the 2023-24 season and holds a scoring average of 69.92 through eight collegiate tournaments.

By deferring his PGA Tour card, Sargent will be able to take it following the 2025 NCAA Championship. He will have full status through 2026 once he turns professional.

Entries Now Open for 2024 Senior Open Presented by Rolex

Both exempt and non-exempt players can now enter for this year’s edition of The Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex .

Carnoustie Golf Links-885506028

The Championship will take place from July 25-28 at Carnoustie, which will play host for the third time in the event’s 37-year history.

Those without an exemption can now enter one of four Qualifying Events set to be staged on the East Coast of Scotland. The venues – each of which lie within 20 miles of Carnoustie Golf Links – include Downfield Golf Club in Dundee, Panmure Golf Club in Carnoustie, the Medal Course at Monifieth Golf Links and the 1562 course at Montrose Golf Links.

Each venue boasts a strong pedigree having hosted both Open Final Qualifying and Senior Open Qualifying in previous years.

There will also be a Qualifying Event held in the United States at Firestone Country Club on Monday July 8 and administered by the PGA TOUR Champions, for which entries are now also open.

David Williams, Tournament Director of The Senior Open Presented by Rolex, said: “It’s very exciting to open qualifying for this year’s edition of The Senior Open Presented by Rolex. This marks the start of a three-month process that will culminate in the winner being crowned at Carnoustie’s legendary Championship Course in July.

“The four Qualifying venues will present a tricky challenge to the players hoping to reach this year’s Championship. Given the proximity of all four venues to the Angus Coastline, they will also offer ideal preparation to those who earn one of the available spots in the field.”

To be eligible for entry, players must be either male Professionals with a current Tour affiliation or PGA Membership, or male Amateurs with an exact handicap index of 0.4 (scratch) or lower under the World Handicap System, or the scheme adopted by the recognised authority controlling golf in their country.

The 10 Most Enjoyable Jobs for Older Workers

For flexibility and a sense of purpose, consider these jobs for your encore career.

Most Enjoyable Jobs for Older Workers

senior tour news

Getty Images | Maskot

Retired teachers are often returning as substitutes, and some teaching jobs may not require any traveling with the advent of online education.

Key Takeaways:

  • Nearly 1 in 5 Americans age 65 and older was working in 2023, according to the Pew Research Center.
  • Surveys show that older employees value meaningful work and flexible jobs.
  • Enjoyable jobs for older Americans include a mix of skilled jobs and entry-level positions.
  • Many people may be able to leverage their existing job into an enjoyable encore career as a consultant.

After decades in the workforce, it would seem natural for older Americans to look forward to retirement. However, many people age 65 or older continue to work and are quite happy to do so.

Nearly 20% of Americans in the 65-plus age bracket were employed in 2023, according to a report from the Pew Research Center . Of those, 62% were working full-time. For comparison, only 11% of individuals this age were working in 1987, and the majority were employed in part-time jobs .

Older workers aren’t begrudgingly clocking in either. A separate Pew Research Center survey found two-thirds of workers who are age 65 or older say they are extremely or very satisfied with their jobs.

Of course, not all jobs are created equal. Some positions are simply more age-friendly than others, according to a 2022 working paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research . The authors note that older workers have distinct skills and preferences, such as a desire for greater autonomy and fewer job hazards.

Whether you want an encore career or are simply looking to make some extra money while semi-retired, here are 10 jobs for those over age 50 to consider.

  • Tour guide.
  • Business owner.
  • Maintenance worker.
  • Retail salesperson.
  • Financial planner.
  • Counselor or life coach.
  • Consultant.
  • Any job that captures your imagination.

A top concern for older workers is having a job that provides meaning, and no job scores as more enjoyable for older workers than that of clergy. That's according to a 2017 survey of more than 6,000 workers age 62 and older conducted by the Urban Institute , a think tank. Nearly two-thirds of seniors in this profession say they really enjoy what they do.

Meaningful work was also cited as a job requirement by 90% of workers age 40 and older who were surveyed for the 2023 "Value of Experience" survey by AARP . And being a member of the clergy might tick off other boxes for older workers as well.

AARP found that 91% of survey respondents want to work with an organization with good values and mission, and 79% value the opportunity to work with different generations. Both may be found in many clergy positions.

When it comes to age-friendly jobs, the NBER working paper taps tour guides as a top choice for those age 50 and older . These jobs rely heavily on soft skills such as interpersonal communication, which is a strength for many older workers.

“As tour guides, they bring unique perspectives and insights to the table that enrich visitors' experiences in ways no one else could,” said Eva Chan, a career advisor and certified professional resume writer with Resume Genius, in an email.

What’s more, many tour guide positions offer flexibility, something valued by 79% of workers age 50 and older, according to AARP.

Business Owner

After decades of taking orders from someone else, older workers may be ready to be their own bosses.

“A large number of older people are ideally suited to entrepreneurship,” said business lawyer Mary Cannon, founder of business coaching service Goodcounsl, in an email. “They’re already experienced in life and business. They are more likely to know and accept their true selves.”

There’s no need to stick with your current industry, either. Some of the most successful business launches she’s assisted with involved clients who pivoted to a completely new field, Cannon noted.

Maintenance Worker

Working in maintenance is not the flashiest job, but it can be a perfect position for seniors who want less stressful employment on a full-time or part-time basis.

“We have folks who have transitioned into maintenance positions,” said Justin Guest, vice president of resident engagement for senior community company Atria Management, in an email. For residents of these communities who find work at their property, it provides a way to earn extra income without commuting .

An easy commute is a must-have job characteristic for 88% of workers age 50 and older, the AARP "Value of Experience" report finds.

Retail Salesperson

Working in a retail store isn't the most lucrative job available to older workers, but it's hard to beat when it comes to flexible hours.

Retail sales positions can be found in a variety of stores, making it possible to find a job that matches a person's interests. These jobs also allow employees to interact with customers as well as share their knowledge, two attributes that can make the work appealing.

After a high-pressure career, working in retail might be a welcome change of pace, and 79% of U.S. hiring managers say they’ve seen an uptick in older applicants for entry-level positions, according to a 2023 poll by Express Employment Professionals . They are in demand too, with 60% of hiring managers saying they prefer to hire older workers for these jobs.

Schools value experienced educators and are often willing to accommodate their work needs. Retired teachers are often welcomed back as substitutes, while postsecondary schools may look for experienced professionals to teach on a part-time basis.

“Teaching as an adjunct (professor) is another great job for an older worker,” said Paul Dillon, adjunct instructor at the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University, in an email. “It offers a chance to pass along your skills and experience to another generation.”

With the advent of online education, some teaching jobs may not even require instructors to travel to campus.

Financial Planner

For those who have experience with investing, one of the best jobs for older workers may be that of a financial planner . These positions lend themselves well to flexible working arrangements and can be done on a part-time basis for those who want to be semi-retired.

A related option would be an encore career in insurance sales. Since the industry is all about building relationships, older insurance sales agents benefit from the large network of connections they have acquired throughout the years.

Overall, jobs in finance, insurance and real estate have the highest average age-friendliness, according to the NBER working paper.

Counselor or Life Coach

Although a distant second to clergy, counselors have the second-most enjoyable job for older workers, according to the Urban Institute study. Nearly half of those employed in this field report they enjoy their jobs.

Counseling jobs may have specific education and licensure requirements, depending on the state. Not all older workers will qualify to work as a counselor, but becoming a life coach may be a viable alternative. These jobs offer a less formal way to provide guidance to others.

“They draw on their extensive life experiences to help clients navigate challenges and achieve their goals,” Chan said.

If someone enjoys their current career, there is no reason to change fields when they get older. Instead of leaving their profession, they could switch from being an employee to a consultant.

“Becoming a consultant on your own … in your field of endeavor is a great job for an older worker,” Dillon said. “It offers a chance to set your own hours and work at your own pace while making an income.”

Companies in a variety of fields, such as business, information technology, management and accounting, may use consultants. In some cases, workers will be brought on to help with specific projects, while others may be asked to mentor new employees. Older workers who have a good relationship with their current employer may be able to continue as a consultant for their firm even after they retire.

Any Job That Captures Your Imagination

Don't make the mistake of thinking only certain jobs are appropriate for those older than age 50.

“Ultimately, the most enjoyable job for older workers will depend on their individual interests and goals,” said Jon Morgan, CEO of consulting firm Venture Smarter, in an email. “It's essential to consider what type of work will bring the most satisfaction and fulfillment in this stage of life.”

Determine your personal goals and needs to find a position that will be a good fit. Any job can be an enjoyable one for older workers, and everyone needs to find what that occupation is for themselves.

What Taylor Swift's new album means for her $1 billion fortune

  • Taylor Swift's new album, " The Tortured Poets Department ," is almost guaranteed to be a bestseller.
  • But no matter how well it does, it won't be the way Swift earns most of her money this year.
  • The remaining leg of her Eras Tour is expected to add much more to Swift's billion-dollar fortune.

Insider Today

Taylor Swift released her new album, " The Tortured Poets Department ," at midnight, and, in what should be no surprise to anyone on this planet in the year 2024, it caused a scene.

Her album garnered millions of streams within hours. There's almost no doubt it'll top the Billboard chart like the 13 Swift albums before it.

But no matter how many platinum certifications it collects or streams it racks up on Spotify, "The Tortured Poets Department" won't be Swift's biggest money-maker this year.

The remaining leg of her Eras Tour — kicking off in Paris next month and running through December — is instead expected to be what contributes most to her fortune, which Bloomberg estimated to be $1.1 billion last year.

"Live music is the engine of the global music business," Clayton Durant, an adjunct professor at NYU Steinhardt's Music Business Program who's the founder of CAD Management, told Business Insider. "Her tour is probably going to earn 10 to 15 times more than her streaming."

Swift's Eras Tour brought in more than $1 billion in ticket sales last year over its 66 dates. By the end of this year, she's set to have played another 86. Swift's cut is unknown, but based on industry standards, she'll surely earn nine figures in 2024 from ticket sales.

Concerts don't only bring in money from ticket sales.

Pollstar estimates that Swifties spend an average of $40 a head on merch at her concerts — that adds up to about $175 million in gross merch sales last year. Swift's camp keeps the majority of that.

Bloomberg estimated that between box office and merchandise, Swift pocketed $225 million, pre-tax, from her first 57 Eras Tour dates. Career earnings from ticket sales and merchandise account for 34% of her total net worth, while earnings from music streaming and sales account for 18%, Bloomberg estimates.

Related stories

Swift isn't alone in making money on the road.

In 2021, the last year Billboard made a list of music's top earners, seven out of the 10 top money makers earned more than half of their income from touring.

But the music industry didn't always function this way. Before the advent of streaming, musicians made most of their fortune selling CDs, cassette tapes, and vinyl records .

"Physical music sales made up the bulk of artists' revenue pre-streaming, and that revenue was what enabled artists to tour. These days, the equation has flipped," Tatiana Cirisano, a senior music-industry analyst at MIDiA, told BI over email.

Streaming made listening to recorded music much cheaper. For less than the price of one CD — or for free, illegally or with ads — people could get all the songs they wanted.

"The moment Napster hit, it changed the paradigm, and it really honestly diluted the value of music," Durant said.

To be sure, Swift is still making tens of millions, if not more, on streaming and record sales each year — more than almost any other artist on the planet.

Streaming services such as Spotify pay out artists on a pro-rata model: There's a pot, made up of subscription and ad revenue, paid out to artists each year. Those with the biggest share of the platform's total streams get the biggest piece of it.

But "if you're an individual artist, you have to have a pretty massive audience to be able to earn a meaningful share of that revenue — which is paid out to you after your label gets its cut," Cirisano said.

Last year, Swift was the most streamed artist on both Apple and Spotify. One of every 78 songs streamed in the US last year was a Swift song, according to the music-data firm Luminate. She'll probably rank at or near the top again, between " The Tortured Poets Department " and a streaming lift from the second leg of her Eras Tour.

Swift is also set to earn more than most artists from physical music sales. Last year, she was responsible for one out of every 15 vinyl records sold, according to Luminate. Cirisano said Swift's rabid followers saw physical records as "a symbol of fandom" and a way to support Swift.

That said, without Eras, Swift would just be a poor centimillionaire.

The Rolling Stones have been busy for the past half-year or so. The rock band returned in late 2023 with their first album of original material in nearly two decades, Hackney Diamonds . Since then, the group has been pushing that set with interviews and a handful of singles, and they’re also getting ready for an upcoming tour.

In the middle of this period, the Rolling Stones have also found time to give their fans more of what they want: music. Today, the band dropped two new collections, which are sure to be highly desired by their most ardent followers.

For Record Store Day 2024, the Rolling Stones have delivered not one, but two special offerings. Both are only available in very limited quantities, and they’re likely to sell out quickly.

Perhaps most exciting is the release of a new live album. Live at Racket NYC is now available for the first time as a standalone project. The music featured on it was previously added to a deluxe edition of Hackney Diamonds , but now fans can own them both separately.

Live at Racket NYC features seven songs performed by the band during their recent intimate gathering at the New York City venue. It’s being sold in record stores on white vinyl, and it's limited to 7,000 copies.

Also new from the Rolling Stones is a special anniversary edition of their debut album. The self-titled affair, which was specific to the U.K. (at least in this form), is sold on a 180g blue/black swirled vinyl. Only 6,000 have been made, and each one comes with a lithograph with images by Terry O’Neill and stamped numbers.

Green Bay, Brown County optimistic about chances coal piles will move as White House official tours site

senior tour news

GREEN BAY - The Port of Green Bay applied for a $25 million federal grant to cover higher-than-expected costs to build a new port facility, a project key to ongoing community efforts to relocate the coal piles out of the central city.

The port in February applied for a U.S. Department of Transportation RAISE Discretionary Grant to close a budget gap in a plan to develop a new multipurpose port facility on the former Pulliam Power Plant site at the mouth of the Fox River. Cost estimates last fall showed improvements and infrastructure work on the site would cost about $48.7 million , about $19 million more than originally expected.

The RAISE grant program has about $1.5 billion to award in 2024.

Port Director Dean Haen said the community's application included letters of support from 40 businesses, legislators and Gov. Tony Evers that "make our case why it's very important to Green Bay." He said the grant is necessary to ensure construction starts in 2025 on the new port facility along the west shore at the mouth of the Fox River.

Senior aide to President Joe Biden tours Green Bay coal piles site

The port won't find out until summer whether it receives the grant, but a senior White House official toured the coal piles site during a visit to Green Bay on Thursday , giving local officials the opportunity to drive the point home that the city, county, and C. Reiss Coal Co. are "all aligned," said Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich.

The tour, as much as the guest of honor, carried some import in itself — It was the first time C. Reiss Coal Co. representatives joined city of Green Bay and Brown County officials to tour the site and publicly discuss the relocation since the community first identified an opportunity to relocate the coal yard in 2021.

Keith Haselhoff, CEO of C. Reiss Coal Co. , met with senior adviser to President Joe Biden and Director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs Tom Perez, Genrich, Haen and other city and county officials. Perez also toured City East Center , a city- and state-funded affordable housing development and new home of the Brown County United Way .

Perez said the collaborative work of the city, county, business community, and C. Reiss Coal is often a key to securing grants, though he personally does not judge any applications.

"I see potential, remarkable potential," Perez said after touring the C. Reiss site. "There's obviously leadership here."

'We're optimistic this can be a success'

Haselhoff said C. Reiss continues to take its cues from the city and county as they pursue the money necessary to pull off the port expansion, relocation of C. Reiss and redevelopment of the coal yard site. But he said the company is optimistic at this point and continues to discuss its operational needs with the community partners.

"We're optimistic this can be a success," Haselhoff said. "New beginnings are always exciting."

The company has not said much publicly, but that does not mean it hasn't been closely involved, Genrich said. He called the company a "constructive partner" since the county and city got serious.

"They've never said, 'No, we're not interested,'" Genrich said. "They've been at the table figuring out how to make it work for themselves and the community."

Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach said the community and company efforts to date have positioned the region to, after 25 years of talks, "reimagine what the next 100 years will look like" for the riverfront site.

After 4 years of work, Green Bay, Brown County, C. Reiss have community close to plan to relocate coal piles

Brown County in 2021 paid $2.7 million to Wisconsin Public Service Corp. for the former J.P. Pulliam power plant site. WPS generated electricity on the 43.7-acre site from 1927 until 2018 when WPS shut down the two coal-fired power plants and began demolishing them.

The county saw the property as an opportunity to expand port operations in an industrial area of Green Bay on a site with room to relocate the coal piles, a goal community leaders have pursued for decades now. The riverfront site has been a coal yard since 1900, C. Reiss officials said.

Genrich has called the relocation a "once-in-a-city's-lifetime" transformation of the community's waterfront.

But first, the port expansion site needs a lot of costly work and port officials have so far secured about $30.8 million in funding:

  • $15 million in American Rescue Plan Act dollars via Gov. Tony Evers .
  • $10.1 million federal Port Infrastructure Development Program Grant .
  • $500,000 Idle Sites Grant  from Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. to help buy the property.
  • $3.2 million in Brown County American Rescue Plan Act dollars.
  • $2.1 million in WisDOT Harbor Assistance Grants.

The funding and engineering work to design the port expansion enabled the community to accelerate discussions with C. Reiss Coal Co. about relocating the coal piles.

In Depth: A port, a power plant and partnerships: How Green Bay and Brown County could finally relocate the coal piles

What's the Port of Green Bay expansion project?

The site needs improvements and upgrades on land and in the Fox River in order to potentially facilitate a variety of maritime deliveries and pickups. This site would be publicly owned in contrast to the 14 current port terminals that are privately owned and operated. The new port facility on its own could bolster the port's economic impact by as much as $87 million.

A major component of the project would involve dredging along the site and installation of a steel dock wall to enable ships to dock at the site. Construction plans include:

  • Dredge the Fox River along the site and install a steel dock wall to enable ships to access the site.
  • Construct a rail spur.
  • Fill in the docking slip on the Pulliam site.
  • Build a stormwater detention basin.
  • Add mooring facilities and crane pads for port operations.
  • Repair the sea wall.

While some road and infrastructure construction could start still this year, Haen said the community needs to win a RAISE Grant if it wants to start construction on the port-specific improvements in 2025.

Coal piles site could become housing, port site and ... Green Bay's Amtrak station?

City and county officials envision a port/industrial operation, housing and, possibly, an Amtrak station on the coal piles current site. The overall goal would be to activate the riverfront and develop a mix of uses that complements the Shipyard Redevelopment Area housing and recreational amenities coming together just north of the Mason Street bridge.

The northern 10 acres of the site, closest to Mason Street, would be marketed to housing developers.

The southern 20-plus acres would be used to create a new port site to facilitate some industrial uses in order to further bolster the port's current $217 million economic impact .

And with northeastern Wisconsin being awarded $500,000 to study passenger rail expansion from Milwaukee north to Green Bay , Genrich also pitched the coal piles site as a potential location for a new Amtrak terminal. He touted the site as well-located between downtown Green Bay and the rapidly developing Lambeau Field stadium and entertainment district.

"(A train station) can a lot of times be a pretty catalytic presence. We'd love to have a station located here as well," Genrich said.

Politics latest: Rwanda bill finally clears parliament - as minister admits it's 'inevitable' there will now be challenges to legislation

Rishi Sunak's flagship Rwanda bill has passed through parliament, but a minister has acknowledged further challenges to the controversial legislation are "inevitable".

  • Small boat crossings must stop 'out of compassion more than anything else', PM says
  • Sunak in Poland with chancellor and defence secretary
  • Challenges to Rwanda bill 'inevitable', minister says - but declares government will 'overcome them'
  • Five deaths on migrant boat trying to cross Channel hours after legislation passes
  • Live reporting by  Ben Bloch

Speaking to journalists on the plane to Poland, Rishi Sunak discussed the deaths of at least five people this morning who were trying to cross the Channel on a small boat.

The tragedy occurred just hours after the Rwanda bill cleared its final hurdle in parliament - a scheme the government argues will deter people from making the journey.

He said: "There are reports of sadly yet more tragic deaths in the Channel this morning.

"I think that is just a reminder of why our plan is so important because there's a certain element of compassion about everything that we're doing."

The PM reiterated the government's aim is to "prevent people making these very dangerous crossings", noting people smugglers are "packing more and more people into these unseaworthy dinghies".

He continued: "This is what tragically happens when they push people out to sea and that's why, for matters of compassion more than anything else, we must actually break this business model and end this unfairness of people coming to our country illegally."

Mr Sunak paid tribute to the UK Border Force, as well as the French authorities "who have cooperated as they always do to rescue people".

"But as I said, it underscores why you need a deterrent, very simply.

"People need to know that if they try and come here illegally they won't be able to stay, they'll be returned either to their own country or Rwanda.

"And I'm pleased that the bill has passed through parliament in the face of lots of Labour opposition, it was a late night."

The prime minister has landed in Warsaw, Poland for a visit to meet with his counterpart, Donald Tusk, and the NATO secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg.

The chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, and the defence secretary, Grant Shapps, were also on the plane and are accompanying Rishi Sunak on the visit, it has been revealed.

On the plane, the PM told travelling journalists, including our political editor, Beth Rigby , that the "world is less safe than it has been in some decades".

He said his is "very proud that the UK has led" on support for Ukraine, having announced a fresh package today ( more here ).

Mr Sunak added: "We are Europe's largest defence spender and one of the few countries that’s consistently met the 2% [of GDP] NATO spending pledge, and today's action is another example of us leading by example."

Legal challenges to Rishi Sunak's Rwanda bill are "inevitable", the illegal migration minister has admitted, as human rights organisations called on the government not to put the scheme into force.

Michael Tomlinson said the government wanted to ensure flights get off the ground "as soon as possible" but that there would undoubtedly be challenges to the legislation, which passed around midnight last night after months of parliamentary ping pong.

Following the bill's passage, the United Nations and the Council of Europe urged ministers to reconsider the scheme.

Filippo Grandi, the UN high commissioner for refugees said the bill, which is likely to receive Royal Assent and pass into law this week, marked a "further step away from the UK's long tradition of providing refuge to those in need, in breach of the Refugee Convention".

"Protecting refugees requires all countries - not just those neighbouring crisis zones - to uphold their obligations," he said.

Rishi Sunak's bill, which aims to revive the stalled Rwanda policy, will finally become law following a very long evening of ping-pong amendments back-and-forth between the Commons and the House of Lords.

Why is this such an important issue for the Conservatives, and how many people are removed from the UK each year?

Enforced removals of rejected asylum seekers are down by 73% since 2010. The scheme will allow the government to send asylum seekers "entering the UK illegally" to Rwanda.

Most of those affected will be people arriving in small boats. The capacity of the proposed facility in Rwanda is 200 people annually, representing just 0.7% of 2023 small boat arrivals.

The clock is ticking for the prime minister to get deportations up and running - but how much of an impact will the scheme have?

Rishi Sunak is today unveiling a £500m military aid package to Ukraine in its war against Russia alongside the UK's largest provision of munitions so far.

The PM is jetting off to Poland today where he is expected to formally announce the package, and he will meet with his counterpart and the NATO secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg.

Some 400 vehicles, 60 boats, 1,600 strike and air defence missiles, and four million rounds of ammunition are included in the package.

The announcement comes during a downswing for Ukraine as Russian forces have been gaining the upper hand in recent weeks.

The PM spoke to Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, this morning, in which he assured him of the UK's "steadfast support", and said that "Ukraine's security was central to all of Europe's security".

Mr Zelenskyy wrote on X that his is "grateful to the UK and personally to Prime Minister Sunak for such a strong demonstration of support".

Marine tracking shows French rescue boats responding to a migrant incident off the coast of Wimereux, northern France, in the early hours of this morning.

Data from MarineTraffic24 shows two French ships patrolling the coastline overnight.

At around 4.45am UTC, at least three boats are involved in search and rescue efforts.

The rescue boats appear to be attending different locations all along the coast near Wimereux.

Meanwhile on the British side, at 6am UTC at least three Border Force boats are out in the Channel.

Rescues appear to be ongoing.

Watch below the marine traffic movements overnight and into this morning:

We've had some reaction from charities to the Rwanda bill completing its passage through parliament overnight.

Rose Caldwell, CEO of global children's charity Plan International UK, described the bill as a "shocking new low for the asylum system in the UK".

"Sending vulnerable asylum seekers thousands of miles away to yet another country could cause immense suffering for people who have already experienced the trauma of having to flee their homes," she said, calling for the government to "immediately abandon this cruel and unworkable policy".

Helen Stawski, policy lead at Oxfam, said it is a "sad indictment of the government that they have gone to such extraordinary lengths to pursue such an inhumane policy".

She said the government has a "moral and legal responsibility to welcome people fleeing war and persecution".

She called for more safe and legal routes for refugees to be established, accusing ministers of "dodging Britain's duty to people in desperate need".

As we've been reporting this morning, a major police operation is under way off the coast of France after a number of small boats were launched.

French media is reporting at least five people have died.

Following those reports, Home Secretary James Cleverly said: "These tragedies have to stop. I will not accept a status quo which costs so many lives.

"This government is doing everything we can to end this trade, stop the boats and ultimately break the business model of the evil people smuggling gangs, so they no longer put lives at risk."

James Cleverly will visit Italy to discuss joint action on curbing illegal migration.

The home secretary's visit comes as the government prepares to begin deportation flights to Rwanda after its Rwanda bill passed through parliament.

Mr Cleverly will discuss efforts to stem migration from north Africa with interior minister Matteo Piantedosi.

On Wednesday he will visit Lampedusa, an island at the centre of Europe's refugee crisis, and the Italian coastguard headquarters in Rome.

Mr Cleverly said: "Tackling the global migration crisis takes global solutions. Italy are one of our most crucial partners in tackling this shared challenge and have been at the forefront of arrivals into Europe.

"Our countries have shown we are willing to challenge the status quo and use innovative solutions to tackle the issues, while ferociously going after the people-smuggling gangs."

By Becky Johnson , communities correspondent

At a meeting of asylum seekers in Derby, Rwanda was the main topic of conversation.

Among the large group of mostly men, there are people who've been warned they're being considered for removal.

Hamzeh, 34, from Iran, arrived by small boat in December 2022.

He's received a letter from the Home Office telling him it has evidence that before he claimed asylum he was in France, adding that it may ask Rwanda whether it would admit him.

Through a translator he explains that he can't stop thinking about it and doesn't know what to do.

He says his wife back home has warned him if he does get sent to Rwanda he won't see her or their two-year-old child again.

Fahed, 30, arrived in the UK by small boat last July. He claims he was tortured in Sudan.

He says the asylum seekers he shares a house with are "losing sleep" over being sent to Rwanda.

"Before I came to the UK if you'd said they'd send me to Rwanda I'd never come here," he says, adding: "Rwanda is not a safe country."
