'85-'94 Ski-doo Safaris

  • Add to quote

I was just wondering about the Ski-Doo Safaris. I wanted to know if they are good motor, good gas mileage, good performance, and basically maintenance-free. I was wondering what the a good price would be for an '85-'94 safari. It dosnt matter what model of safari it is, as long as the 377 motor has twin carbs. Thats a must. If someone could tell me what year and model of safaris had the twin carbs and what the top speed would be of this sled it would be great. SWRules

Safaris can be had here around Barrie, Ontario for about $500. bucks or less. I'm talking about the 377's that are single carb, I'm not sure if the the 477's had twins or not but they are pretty much not worth anything around here unless you ice fish. Leaf springs and ziltch for suspension are there biggest downfall. I have a 85 safari right now that I have had since new and this sled had never let me down during the years I did ride it and I rode the snot out of it. It will go forever on a tank of gas, the only thing it cost me was a new starter rope and thats it. I do know the Citation SS had the same motor pretty much with the twin carbs and were a hoot in there time but these sleds are really outdated.

We sold our 93 377 Safari Deluxe this year. It was a twin carb and never let us down. It would run 80-85 flat out on a hard surface. It was a good beginner sled for my son who was 12 when we picked it up. It sold for 2000 with 3800 km on it and barely a scratch. It was always serviced and it showed. It rode good and handled OK on good trails. It wasn't much at off trail riding. It was very easy on gas. For a beginer sled or to tool around the farm it is great. For aggressive trail riding, no way. Mind you that big windshield kept you as warm as could be.

what year was yours BARRIEMACHZ?

My uncle has an 88 377 and the only thing he has had to change in almost 15 years now is a track. the sled still starts on first pull everytime. it is still fast enough to keep up with alot of the new sleds. he still loves it. it has about 25,000 k on it . he dosen't do any road riding or he dosen't ride in low snow conditions. guess that is why he has never changed Hi-Fax.

Fuzzy: Does it have 2 carbs? Electric Start, hand/thumb warmers? Speedo? Tach? How fast has he had it going? Ok thanks.

FREEZERBURNT: How was the Scout E on gas? What colour was it? Good performance??

Yellow but mine was painted black by previous owner :hallo1: Some Safaries are black, some are yellow and some are burgundy Its a 377 so it runs great for a 377 it will do 100kmph They are good on gas

One carb has a spedo no tach ,electric start or any other options like that.. track is a 118 or a 121 X 16 1/2 " don't know what spped he has had it at. it was a fast skidoo in it's day. the same cc cats and poos couldn't look at in speed or deep snow. he is thinking about getting a Gade next year so his son can use the 377. forgot to mention gas milage was excelent. before I got my sks I had a tundra and I would bunr two tanks of gas to his one. he gets about 15-17 MPG Click to expand...

How much would it cost for someone to put a second carb on say a '89 Safari 377?

Would it increase the power much? faster accelaration and top speed?

Got a 89 safari cheyenne 503 Long track, just did the first rebuild after 20000 km. A part from the susp which is a real POS, it is a great work sled ,not for trails though. Top speed was 95 kph.

Ski-Doo Safari. Good starter sled?

Looking at a couple of mid 80's to early 90's Safari 377 sleds. Just wondering if anyone has one? Any issues with your sled? Good for a beginner? Thanks

My wife had a 88, and my daughter had a 89.. They were great on gas and oil..Rode a little stiff compared to the newer iron..The motors are a well proven design.. Good starter sled.MMV.

you should be able to find something 10 years newer for the same price I suspect.. unless its under $500

ski doo safari 500

What price Dude :wtf: he did not mention price I had a 85 Safari 447,87 Safari 377 and 89 Safari Scout E(same as 377),all good sleds great in deep snow for the power Only thing to watch is the oil injection pump on the recoil and the secondary helixes as the setting pin likes to eat as at them BTW stay away from the Safari L or any Safari with Aarms front as they are heavy POS 100+ lbs more then the leaf spring 84-92 Safaris and no good off trail and riding like a lumber wagon even with independant

ski doo safari 500

i had a 89 when i was younger. it spent almost as much time upside down than it did on the track. was a great starter sled for young kids but for a little extra you can get something with the same power but with a wider ski stance, which in turn makes it more stable for the beginner.

ski doo safari 500

We had a 93 and it was a great sled. Never missed a beat while we had it.

We had a 92 LCE 4?? cc liquid, single carb when I was in High School total POS compared to the 94 arctic cat cougar 440 we had. The cougar was faster, rode better, less repairs, and easier for beginners to maneuvar.

ski doo safari 500

I have a 1984 Safari 377. I have found it damn near bullet proof. It's seems the harder I ride it, the better it behaves. They are very inexpensive to repair should the need arises and parts are ready available. I bought a full parts sled for 80 bucks and stripped it. I will say you might outgrow its top speed quickly as the single carb units top out about 40 to 50. I plan to shave my heads this spring and rebuild a motor I blew up and bore it 20 over which will bring the 377 to approximately a 442cc. It is a really fun ride though.

My dad had an 85 Safari 377 very good beginner sled, Handles very good, great on gas, light snowmobile. The only real issue is the suspension or lack there of. It's smaller than most of the full sized sleds of the 90's. It doesn't set the world on fire in the power department either, but it wasn't really made to be fast.

ski doo safari 500

That motor was around forever in a few sleds right up to 04-05 in the 380 MXZ, might just run forever

Old Sled Sighting: 1994 Ski-Doo Safari Deluxe—on cusp of vintage

If a vintage snowmobile starts at 25 years, then this 1994 Ski-Doo Safari is on the cusp of being a vintage ride.

— October 12, 2017

A 1994 Ski-Doo Safari Deluxe, a dusty relic from back in the day.

Some will say that a dusty relic hardly qualifies as vintage snowmobile, but I found this 1994 Ski Doo Safari Deluxe sitting in a shed waiting to see the light of day. The owner said it was the “kid’s sled” but the kid hadn’t ridden it in a while. So what’s the story of Ski-Doo Safari?

Here’s what one forum contributor had to say about the Safari: “So far it's been a real nice first sled! It's pretty quick, but I wish it was a little faster. She tops out at around 85-90 km/h.”

If a vintage snowmobile starts at 25 years, then this 1994 Ski Doo Safari is on the cusp of being a vintage ride.

Talking about sleds of this era, American Snowmobiler stated back in 1995, “Ski-Doo recognizes this. That is why you see the Bombardier line taking on a very familiar stance. The 1995 models are all based on the F-2000 chassis, DSA front suspensions, C-7 type rear suspension, and proven Rotax engines from one to three cylinders. This year, Ski-Doo has "out-Polarised" Polaris when it comes to efficiency and standardization in its model mix. Oh, yeah. The Safari replacements, now simply Touring models, combine the best of the best - the F-2000 chassis and rock-steady Rotax fan-cooled engines. And with standardization comes an ability to offer aggressive pricing, which is good news for snowmobile consumers. Doesn't this all sound familiar? Isn't that what Polaris has been doing with its Indy? And isn't it what Yamaha would do with the Max series if it was focused?”

Surpassing and overshadowing the Ski-Doo Safari line up was the milestone introduction of the Summit line, because on September 14, 1993 the two millionth Ski-Doo snowmobile was manufactured in Valcourt, Québec. Bombardier creates a new segment in the snowmobiling market with the Summit model, especially designed for powder snow and mountain terrain.

1985 skidoo safari

  • Add to quote

Greetings; Just registered and am still trying to navigate around. I have aquired a 1985 ski doo Safari 377 with a primer/plunger vs. a choke. It runs good once it starts but seems to flood out a lot. Are their any alternitives to the primer? sugestions?

ski doo safari 500

I personally think the primer is a great alternative to choke. Skidoo has used them for years succesfully. Each machine seems to start a little differently, with different number of primes, but you should be able to find one a sequence that lets you start it in 1 or 2 pulls the flooding issue on startup might be due to pumping it too much. Or if it's flooding while running it could be carb issues. On my skidoo, if i don't get the primer right the first time, it will flood. Then i will need to pull it over a few times to clean 'er out.

Thanks,I never had a sled with a primer,I'll giv it a shot!

i know my 89 safari 500 only needs 2-3 pumps of the primer, 3 if the first one sounds like it sucking air.

Primers are THE BOMB! Sleds with a primer will usually start on 1-2 pulls even first thing after sitting for awhile, with a choke you'll have to pull a bunch more times... I like 'em so much I even added one to my old Arctic Cat Add a Primer The best part of it on that sled is the primer pulls gas from the million mile away rear gas tank...

Maybe you can help me. I also acquired a Ski Doo Safari but do not know the year. It starts with model number 3604. It has a fold out headlight and I believe a 377 engine. I think it is an 85 as well, but not sure. Can you check your model number and see what the 1st four digits are. Also, I have a primer on this and on my 95 Ski doo formula 500 and I love it. This Safari isn't running yet, but just got it and it is 7 degrees in Massachusetts and I'm not crazy enough to work on it in this weather.

i have a 1985 grand luxe and it only take 3-4 primes and it usually starts with 2 pulls. once in a while it will get flooded but if you hold the throttle wide open about 4 pulls it will fire up. does anyone know if i can get plastic skins for the ski's or not??

im thinkin about buying a skidoo safari for 100 bucks what kinda mods can u do to a fan cooled 377cc skidoo safari and does ne one know where i can get a decent hood for cheap

ski doo safari 500

I see lots of safari hoods on Craigslist, for some reason. Any ways,i have a '90 safari, and there isn't much you can do to such a small sled. THe seat seems especially long to me, and the windshield is HUGE(easy to crack, i would know. Why i don't have one). Good beater

ik u cant kill them safaris this sled used to be mine i sold it them im gonna buy it back i used to jump everything and go through like 7 feet of snow without getting stuck i just thought it would be a kinda cool old sled to restore and mess around with on craigslist what are the price ranges go from for the hoods

i dont think it will fit i think its a safari saga the cowels a bit taller

ok. Yah, never heard of them. good luck! I guess there's always the normal stuff- handguards, skis, fishbones, risers, mountain bar, hooks. I dont know about clutching, might not be worth it on that sled.

I learned on one of them mine was an 86" couldn't kill it there really reliable we used ares for ice fishing light and easy to manuever fun sleds

My old man had a 1988 377 Safari and it melted a piston with about 3200 kilometers on it. Pretty gutless sleds but great for beginner riders! Cheers

Skidoo Snowmobile Track Fitment Guide

Welcome to our Skidoo snowmobile track fitment guide. The fitment information comes directly from Camoplast. Its meant to serve as a general fitment guide. Use it to shop with confidence for your replacement snowmobile track.

In general, determining what snowmobile track will fit your Ski Doo sled will consist of determining what width, length, lug height and pitch will fit your sled. Once you determine these dimensions then you need to consider the conditions you ride in most often. For example, if you ride mostly on trails, you ride half on trail and half off trail, you ride mostly off trail, in the mountains, etc…

What information does this Skidoo snowmobile fitment guide provide?

It lists the model and year; original width, length, lug height dimension and pitch for most Skidoo snowmobiles. This will provide you with key information for selecting the correct replacement track for your Ski-doo snowmobile.

How to use the Ski Doo snowmobile track fitment guide

The guide lists Skidoo snowmobile models in alphabetical order. So your first option is to search by simply scrolling down looking at the left hand column for your model of sled and then checking the year column for the correct year. Once you find it, make a note of the lug height and pitch, then look over to the far right for the associated Shop link and click it to start shopping for your track.

Or, you can use the search feature located below. The search feature only needs one key word concerning the model of Skidoo sled you are searching for. For example, if you have a MXZ model, type in MXZ and the table will show you all MXZ models. This will narrow down the number of models on the chart. Once again, once you find your sled, make a note of the lug height and pitch, then look over to the far right for the associated Shop link and click it to start shopping for your track.

If you get frustrated or simply want us to help you with fitment, either call us at 607-693-1031 M-F 10am to 4pm EST or contact us via email and we will help you out.

Camso (Camoplast) is experiencing supply shortages. That means tracks are in short supply. We are trying to carry a supply of tracks in stock but they do sell out quickly. If you order a track from us we will notify you in case the track is out of stock. Dismiss

ski doo safari 500

Needs more info. Different year Safari's had different track. Most tracks for the safaris were either 3/4 or 5/8 i believe. One thing i do know, the pitch is 1.97, most tracks are 2.5 or something like that. Pitch is the size of window on the track between each track clip.

Its a 1990 Lx or lxe, it has the spedo/tach/elctronic fuel gage, Do not think heated grips where stock, Its hard to tell the original motors been swaped out with a 503, with the tra clutch style...not sure if the chaincase or anything else has been modified..

lx or lxe was a 447 if you have a 503 the engines was switched for sure. Heated grips came stock for many of them. I got a post in where you can down a manual, you should check it out. It covers your sled.

i don't think a paddle will fit.... check how far of a distance you got between the track itself which sits on the drive cogs and the tunnel. make sure you have enough space all around the tunnel for a paddle or you could do some hefty damage. i know my 92' safari LCE wont fit a paddle. biggest i got is a 3/4". EDIT: i don't think my 93' safari rally will fit a paddle either, but it would be nice for one of them to have a paddle for sure!

Most 1.97 pitch tracks do not have paddles, and they may be very rare, I think.
