When did Sky Mobile impose roaming fees?

Since 3 May 2022, Sky Mobile has imposed a £2 daily fee on its large customer base who use their phones for calls, texts, and data outside of free WiFi networks while outside the UK.

Previously, mobile companies were prohibited from levying additional charges when customers used their UK allowances in Europe. However, with the conclusion of the post-Brexit transition period, these restrictions no longer apply.

Sky Mobile’s Roaming Passport Plus

Sky Mobile customers using their devices in Europe and other specified countries will have the "Roaming Passport Plus" pass automatically activated and appended to their accounts upon making a call, sending a text, or consuming over 10MB of data, at a cost of £2 a day.

The pass is valid for 24 hours, during which customers can utilise their inclusive minutes, texts, and data without extra charges. Sky will text to confirm the 24 hours have started and when the period is coming to an end. Subsequent passes will be triggered as customers reach the specified thresholds after the 24-hour pass expires.

In case of data depletion while roaming in a Passport Plus destination, users can tap into any unused data from previous months stored in their 'Piggybank.' However, the £2 daily roaming charge still applies.

If you want to avoid incurring charges for data usage abroad, you can disable data roaming by adjusting your phone settings to prevent automatic charges from your carrier.

Sky International Saver

Even with the £2 per day passport charge, it will still cost you to phone and text international numbers. If you wish to make calls or send texts to numbers outside of the UK Sky has the International Saver feature that Sky Mobile customers can add to their plans.

Costing £3 a month, International Saver is designed to save money for those who regularly make calls to friends, family and colleagues around the world. Customers with the add-on pay reduced per-minute rates for calls to a group of countries including Australia, Hong Kong, the USA and Nigeria.

Usually, when you dial out to international numbers from your UK mobile you will face huge charges, with call costs of more than £1.75 a minute. Texting can also be expensive, with providers charging more than 40p a text depending on its destination.

With International Saver, you’ll pay just £0.05 a minute and either £0.06 or £0.10 a text to talk with anyone in any of the available countries listed above.

For more information read Sky Mobile’s tariff guide .

What about roaming on Sky Mobile pay-as-you-go?

If you don’t want to buy the Roaming Passport Plus pass, you can pay as you go for data, calls and texts when you’re abroad. The cost of pay-as-you-go roaming varies depending on the destination, but it’s usually much cheaper than using your UK allowances.

Sky Mobile add-ons when roaming

When you’re in a Roaming Passport Plus destination, you have the option to purchase data add-ons, similar to when you’re at home.

The Roaming Passport Plus subscription, priced at £2 per 24 hours, will still be in place. So on top of that, a 1GB data add-on can be acquired through your Sky Mobile account for £6.

This data add-on remains active until the commencement of your next monthly billing cycle and you can purchase a maximum of 5 add-ons concurrently on a single account.

Additionally, you have the flexibility to use any data you have stored in your Sky Piggybank.

These provisions offer flexibility and convenience for managing your data needs while roaming with Sky Mobile in Roaming Passport Plus destinations.

Does Sky Mobile have a fair usage policy?

Luckily, Sky Mobile doesn't impose any specified fair usage policy for EU roaming at the moment. So, you can go ahead and use your monthly data allowance in any of the countries listed above, safe in the knowledge that it won't cost you any more than it would in the UK.

However, Sky T&C do state you cannot roam abroad for an ‘extended period of time’ and if you do you won't be able to buy any more Roaming Passport Plus 24-hour passes.

Can you roam in the USA?

Since the start of the year, mobile network providers in the USA have discontinued their 2G and 3G coverage to pave the way for more advanced 4G and 5G networks.

Because of this, it's imperative that your phone is compatible with VoLTE Roaming, also known as 4G Calling abroad. You will also need to confirm that 'VoLTE' is activated in your device settings. Some 5G iPhones might have VoLTE enabled by default.

What to do before embarking on your trip to the USA

Many phones support VoLTE Roaming (4G Calling abroad) in the USA, including iPhone 7 and above running iOS 15 or higher, and Samsung S10 and above, as well as Samsung A series devices running Android 12 or higher.

To check compatibility your phone’s compatibility visit Sky’s Device Support page and then:

Select your phone make and model.

Scroll down to the Specifications/Specs tab and navigate to/select Network.

Confirm whether your phone is compatible with VoLTE Roaming in the USA. A green tick or 'Yes (with Android 12 or higher)' beside 'VoLTE Roaming (works in the USA)' indicates compatibility.

If ‘VoLTE Roaming (works in the USA)’ is absent or marked with a red cross (X), your device is not compatible.

You also need to activate VoLTE in your device settings.

On iPhones: Go to Settings > Mobile Data > Mobile Data Options > Voice & Data > switch VoLTE on.

On Android devices: Navigate to Settings > Connections/Network & internet > Mobile networks > switch VoLTE on.

Can I roam outside the EU with Sky Mobile?

Yes, you can roam in most countries outside the EU with Sky Mobile.

But, if the country you’re visiting is not covered by Roaming Passport Plus, you will be charged an out-of-tariff rate, which varies depending on the country you are visiting. A list of the destinations covered by Roaming Passport Plus can be found here .

It is worth noting that the most you can be charged in a monthly billing cycle is £45. You can disable the roaming spend cap through your account’s settings.

Travelling abroad with Sky Mobile: Sky’s Roaming Passport explained

sky mobile travelling abroad

By Chris Barraclough

26th July 2017

Sky Mobile customers can now travel to 36 European destinations with total peace of mind, as their data, minutes and texts allowances can be used abroad at no extra cost. Here’s all you need to know about Sky Mobile’s Roaming Passport, including supported countries, how to activate the service, and what happens if you run out of data in a foreign country.

What happens when I travel outside of the UK with Sky Mobile?

That depends which country you’re travelling to. Right now, Sky is offering its mobile customers the ability to use their standard data, minutes and texts abroad at no extra cost, for 36 EU and EEA countries. This is the Roaming Passport deal , which was introduced in June 2017 as per EU regulations.

In other words, you can access the internet as you can at home, for checking emails, browsing websites, streaming media and more. Any data used will simply come out of your standard UK allowance. Calls and texts to mobiles and standard landlines within those supported countries will also come out of your standard allowance, while you also won’t be charged to receive calls.

If you’re travelling to a country outside of this group, then charges will apply. More on this later.

What about Pay As You Use customers? Are they covered by the Roaming Passport?

If you’re a Pay As You Use customer on Sky Mobile, you’ll be charged 10p per minute or per text when calling or messaging a mobile phone or standard landline within the supported countries. You won’t be charged if you receive a call or text message.

Which European countries are covered by Sky Mobile’s Roaming Passport?

The following is a comprehensive list of all of the countries covered by Sky Mobile’s Roaming Passport at the time of publication.

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canary Islands, Croatia, Cyprus, Cyprus (Northern), Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland (Republic of), Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Azores (Portugal), Madeira (Portugal), Reunion, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden.

Do I need to activate the Roaming Passport on my Sky Mobile account or do anything else before leaving the UK?

Roaming is automatically enabled for all Sky Mobile customers, so your mobile phone should work as normal when you land in a foreign country. Likewise, Roaming Passport is enabled for all users, with no further action required. You can just travel to any of the above countries and use your phone as usual and as long as you don’t go over your limits, you won’t be charged anything extra.

What about other countries? What will Sky Mobile charge me for using my phone everywhere else in the world?

Sky’s rates for other countries are competitive, although charges can of course stack up if you’re not careful. Head to the Sky Mobile travel tariffs page  for the charges incurred in every other country when travelling from the UK.

What happens if I use up all of my data allowance when abroad?

Don’t stress if you realise that you’re running low on data when outside of the UK. You have a few different options for topping up your data allowance, even when roaming. In fact, all of Sky Mobile’s usual top-up schemes work perfectly fine.

For one, any Piggybank data that you have saved up can be used abroad. That is, providing you have at least 1GB saved up in there. Check out Sky Mobile’s Piggybank page for more info.

Alternatively, you can simply buy a data add-on to give you more online time. These booster packages can be used in the supported EU and EEA countries without any extra charges. Just sign into your online account and choose ‘manage data’ to get started.

Is Brexit going to mean changes to mobile roaming charges?

Charge-free roaming is a new EU initiative, so it seems likely that Brexit will result in some changes to existing schemes. Of course, these changes all rest on the negotiations which are currently underway and we won’t know for sure until the UK leaves the EU what impact this move will have. Stay tuned!

Sky Mobile launches Roaming Passport Plus so customers can use their UK data outside of the EU

sky mobile travelling abroad

Sky Mobile has today announced the launch of Roaming Passport Plus, so that customers can use the data in their UK plan when travelling abroad in selected non-EU destinations. Roaming Passport Plus means that for the set price of just £5 each day they use mobile data, customers travelling outside of the EU in the most popular destinations will be better able to manage their roaming charges with the ability to use their data as they would in the UK. Whether trekking through Thailand or exploring downtown New York, customers taking advantage of the plan will have access to Sky Mobile’s fastest available roaming speeds, just as they would at home. Roaming Passport Plus will be available in the 10 most-popular roaming destinations outside of the European Union:

  • New Zealand
  • South Africa
  • Switzerland

With Sky Mobile’s Roll, any unused data at the end of the month is saved in a customer’s Sky Piggybank for up to three years, for customers to dip into when they need a little extra. Unused data in a Sky Piggybank can be used with Roaming Passport Plus in the same way as in the UK, ideal when you’re out sightseeing and not on a Wi-Fi connection. Liz Wynn, Sky’s Director of Mobile, said: “We’re making roaming even simpler by letting customers use their Sky Mobile data in far-away holiday destinations, from the USA to New Zealand. For just £5 a day, you can now browse freely with Sky Mobile knowing you won’t find any nasty surprises on your bill when you get home.” Roaming Passport Plus is available for all customers and will be automatically switched on when a customer uses data after arriving in one of the available destinations.  Each access period lasts 24 hours, after which a new one starts if they use more mobile data. Anyone who chooses not to use Roaming Passport Plus can simply turn data roaming off in their phone settings. Roaming Passport Plus builds on the launch of the Sky Mobile Roaming Passport in May, which lets customers on all plans use their data, calls and texts in European destinations at no extra cost. Calls and texts in Roaming Passport Plus destinations are charged as normal.  Full details of all Sky Mobile’s roaming charges and terms and conditions can be found at: http://www.sky.com/shop/terms-conditions/mobile For further information, please contact: Fever PR [email protected] Disclaimers Notes to editors Sky Mobile at a glance:

  • Roll: customers can redeem rolled-over data in 1GB increments. Data in Sky Piggybank expires after three years
  • Mix: customers can switch their calls, text and data package at any time during their contract. Downgrades are effective in the month following selection
