Small Ship Cruises in Greece

Warm weather, deep blue waters and the beauty of the Greek islands are at arm's reach in adventure cruises. An unforgettable experience.

Littered with tiny and beautiful islands, Greece small ship cruises offer you the opportunity to explore everything the Greek archipelagos have to offer from the comfort of a small ship cruise boat. Visiting the very best of Greece's glittering white sand beaches on one island then away to the lively nightlife hotspots on another is the best way to visit this beautiful part of the world in style. Greece caters to a variety of tastes and interests from fine dining and endless historical and cultural sites to shimmering blue waters, white beaches, and bustling nightlife.

Many adventure cruises around Greece begin in Athens, the capital, and an impressive cultural hub. Cruises then take in the Cyclades Islands, Ionian archipelago as well as the beautiful Dodecanese archipelago home to the iconic island of Rhodes. These island chains are each unique in culture, architecture, and cuisine, all enjoy the azure waters, sandy beaches, and laid-back atmosphere that is the postcard image of Greece. Whether you are hoping to see the wonders of Greek history, bronze yourself on the beach, or party until the morning visitors will find a host of wonders on a small ship cruise around Greece.

Best Greek cruises and areas to visit

Cyclades islands.

Home to some of Greece's most famous islands the Cyclades has always been a hotspot for discerning travellers. The all-night parties of Mykonos to romantic sunsets over the Caldera of Santorini the Cyclades has a reputation as a magical place. The larger islands are home to rows of beautiful tavernas, panoramic restaurants and wine cellars for fine dining aficionados. Sun worshippers will find a beach for every taste in a place where a cloud is so rare it seems almost a curiosity. A small ship cruise gives you the chance to make the most of hundreds of stunning swimming spots in the Cyclades with beautiful blue holes, caves and hidden beaches.

Ionian Islands

Rich in history and blessed with a dramatic coastline the Ionian Islands are renowned for their natural beauty. The islands are geologically fascinating with huge white cliffs along the coast and white sandy beaches nestled in between them, hard to access from land but drop off a small ship cruise and explore some of the quietest and most beautiful spots. Paxos, in particular, has a huge number of tiny coves, inlets and beaches tucked away, the largest island Kefalonia has a number of caves including an underground lake with the surrounding forest. For those looking for nightlife and fine dining Corfu, the second largest island is heaven. The main town is bustling with people enjoying the tavernas, cocktail bars and local shops.

Dodecanese Islands

Home to the iconic and well-loved island of Rhodes, a small ship cruise in the Dodecanese Islands is not only the chance to explore some of the best beaches in Greece but a host of significant historical and archaeological sites including an acropolis and palace. Rhodes is also famed for its unique local delicacies especially its wide range of delicious desserts and cookies. Kos island is also a popular island for small ship cruises thanks to its vibrant nightlife and abundant beaches. Kos is a wonderful mix of experiences with beaches and bars often found just next to historical buildings and ancient villas.

Best time to cruise in Greece

The best time to visit Greece depends on which of its treasures you want to experience and how you like your sun. The summer is the high season running from June to September, this is the time when not only visitors from abroad flock to the islands but locals from the mainland too. This is a vibrant and lively time to visit the islands when a rich variety of people are living the high life on the Greek archipelagos, be prepared to share these islands with the rich and famous and share the waters with their superyachts too. It can be pretty hot during the summer perfect for heading to the beach and making gloriously cool swim stops along the coast. Visiting Greece in spring and winter is cooler and it's a great time for those looking to take in the sights and appreciate the history and architecture of Greece. It is worth noting that during the winter months there will be fewer local businesses open as many are closed during the low season.

How to get to Greece

Most small ship cruises around Greece depart from Athens which is the main international hub of Greece. Athens international airport provides flights from around the world with good connections by metro to Piraeus port where most small ship cruises depart from. There are some of the cruises that start on the archipelagos themselves which usually means either travelling from Athens by flight or ferry out to the island chains. Some of the larger islands such as Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes and Zakynthos have their own international airports many of the smaller ones have domestic airports making it a short hop over from Athens or one of the larger islands.

Greece Cruise Tips

  • Small ship cruises of Greece are extremely popular thanks to the calm waters and rich experiences on offer. It is advisable to book early if you would like to visit in the summer as many boats are booked up months or more in advance.
  • For those who are travelling to the islands by ferry or domestic flight, it is worth noting that they are subject to delays, especially in the peak months. It is best to arrive a day or two before departure and enjoy a little more of Greece at the same time. The ferries and inter-island flights are also extremely busy and it is worth booking well in advance.
  • Check the itinerary for your small ship cruise, different cruises of Greece offer different activities. Sun worshippers should look out for beach tours and plenty of swim stops. Those looking to experience the history and culture of Greece will find some islands such as Rhodes and Kos to have the widest variety of sites.
  • Greece is extremely hot and sunny, good news, in the summer and still sunny in the cooler months making suncream and good coverage of hats and clothing a must. There are also some mosquitos, not so many on the islands themselves thankfully but it is worth bringing a repellent to avoid any bites.
  • The water in Greece is said to often look so clear your boat seems to be floating so it should come as no surprise that snorkelling is a big hit here. Beautiful geological formations, bubbling volcanic seabeds and shoals of fish make it worth bringing your own mask and fins if you enjoy snorkelling and swimming.
  • Greece is part of the E.U. and uses Euros as its currency, banks are easily found on the islands and cards are widely accepted. Tipping is widely accepted as customary for good service. It is interesting to note that due to local regulations your bill for food or drinks must always be left displayed on your table as proof that you have been legally charged.

Explore all the Greek archipelagos have to offer, take in the Cyclades Islands, the Ionian, and the beautiful Dodecanese archipelago. Whether you want to see the wonders of Greek history, tan on the beach, or party until the morning, you'll find a host of wonders in Greece.

I did not dive, but from what I saw from snorkeling, I'm not sorry I didn't. Incredible viz, with very little to see. Beautiful water for swimming, which is what we did, often from the boat like Elon Musk.

It was great. Best way to see Cyclades and flavor of the different islands.

We loved it except for the weather. It was a bit chilly in early May.

Cruising Greece in May on the Elysium

As expected. The Aegean Sea is beautiful and the islands, although some overly commercialized, were lovey. Overall, we enjoyed it immensely

Excellent, especially since we visited places off the beaten path. Our cab driver from the airport asked about our itinerary and was surprised and impressed.

Really good. 8 days was perfect for us to get a good look around the Saronic Islands and have plenty of time for both activities and relaxation.

Cruising Greece in June on the Glaros

My husband thought his 2 diving islands - Milos and Paros - were amazing! He especially loved the cave dive on Paros.

Best Greece cruises: Top 5 ships sailing the Greek isles

Ashley Kosciolek

From ancient mythology to wine and olives, there's a lot to love about Greece . There's something magical about the contrast between the deep-blue waters of the Aegean Sea and the ancient ruins and white buildings found on the Greek islands.

The best Greece cruises offer a well-rounded mix of islands and key Greece destinations: Athens for its ruins, Santorini for its blue-roofed churches, Mykonos for its shopping and nightlife, and Rhodes for its palace and charming cobblestone streets. You might even luck out and snag a visit to places like Turkey or Montenegro, too.

If you're not sure which ships to consider, here's a list of the best cruises to Greece for different kinds of travelers.

Note: Prices were accurate at the time of publication; they're subject to change without notice.

Best Greek isles cruises for families: Disney Dream

small greek cruise ships

Disney Cruise Line is ideal for families. If a Disney cruise to Greece with kids sounds appealing, Disney Dream is the ship that will take you there.

The vessel isn't the line's newest, but it's also not the oldest, and you'll still find plenty to do on board. The 2,500-passenger ship's small size means it's easy to learn your way around. Even better, Disney Dream is typically more affordable than the line's newest vessels.

Dream offers jaw-dropping entertainment and daily character appearances, which means your children likely won't be bored on the ship. Its magical kids clubs feature a replica of Andy's room from "Toy Story" and the Millennium Falcon's cockpit from "Star Wars." (Expect surprise visits from R2-D2 or a squad of stormtroopers.)

Also, Greece is wrapped in tons of ancient history to spark your family's imagination. For example, in Athens, you might choose to take a guided tour of the Acropolis, followed by a "day in the life of an archaeologist" experience, where you'll search for treasures in a faux archaeological dig.

If the kids prefer something sportier, they might enjoy an excursion that takes visitors to the Panathenaic Stadium for a tour and a talk about the first Olympic games of the modern era.

Disney Dream sails five-, seven- and nine-night voyages from $322 per person, per night, for a windowless inside cabin. Some itineraries sail round-trip from Rome, while others cruise one-way between Rome and Barcelona with calls on Athens, Mykonos and other ports in Greece.

Best adults-only Greece cruises for party animals: Resilient Lady

small greek cruise ships

If you enjoy a lively megaship party atmosphere but you don't want an environment that's overrun with kids, Virgin Voyages ' Resilient Lady will likely be the best Greece cruise option for you.

Although Virgin's Greece itineraries are pretty standard, its onboard experience is what sets it apart in the region.

The adults-only ship combines a casual vibe with a ramped-up nightlife. You'll find passengers dressed like mermaids, crew dressed like drag queens and performers that more accurately represent a cross-section of real life than those whom you'll find on most other lines' vessels.

As part of what just might be the best entertainment at sea , nighttime shows run the gamut from lounge singers and seemingly impromptu atrium dance parties to secret below-deck visits to the "crew bar" for a drink. There's also Scarlet Night — a rave-like pool-deck dance party where everyone wears red.

If that's not wild enough for you, there's also an app that lets you order Champagne to wherever you are on board, free fitness classes that encourage you to dress up in your '80s best and even a tattoo parlor so you can make some bad decisions.

Resilient Lady sails seven-, 10- and 11-night cruises from Athens, starting at $145 per person, per night, for an inside cabin. The voyages feature a mix of stops in Greece (including Santorini and Rhodes and an overnight in Mykonos), Croatia, Turkey and Montenegro, depending on the specific itinerary you choose.

Best budget-friendly Greece cruises: Rhapsody of the Seas

small greek cruise ships

Want to check out Greece but have limited funds? Although you'll have to factor in potentially expensive flights to Europe to board, a voyage on Royal Caribbean 's Explorer of the Seas could be right up your alley.

The vessel is one of Royal Caribbean's oldest ships — it debuted in 2000 — but that doesn't mean you won't find fun onboard activities such as trivia, pool games, nightly theater performances, game shows, dancing and live music.

The best part if you're on a budget is the price. You can snag sailings of six, seven or eight nights from just $85 per person, per night, for an inside cabin. These cruises sail either between Rome and Athens or between Barcelona and Athens, or round-trip from Ravenna (the port for Bologna, Italy). Voyages include calls on Athens, Santorini and Mykonos, as well as ports in Cyprus and Turkey.

Best small-ship luxury Greece cruises: Windstar's Wind Star

small greek cruise ships

Windstar Cruises ' namesake, Wind Star, is a 148-passenger masted sailing yacht that offers a special Greek islands experience because it calls on some of the area's smaller ports in addition to Athens.

The ship is great for sailing aficionados. Because of its small size, it can visit smaller ports that larger vessels can't access. (Think Monemvasia, a town carved into rock, and Gythion, where you'll find caves and lovely beaches.)

Also, Wind Star is an upscale ship, which means you'll find elevated dining and service on board. All cabins offer at least one window. When you purchase an all-inclusive fare, Wi-Fi, gratuities and alcohol are rolled into the price.

Among other itineraries, the vessel sails weeklong cruises between Athens and Rome that call on Monemvasia and Gythion in Greece, as well as several ports in Italy. Rates start from $300 per person, per night, for an outside cabin.

Best locally based Greek isles cruises: Celestyal Journey

small greek cruise ships

Celestyal Cruises is a line you don't hear about too often, but it's based in Greece, which means it has a unique perspective on Greek island sailings.

If you're looking for a cruise vacation that's full of local Greek flair, check out the brand's Celestyal Journey. The ship isn't new, but it's new to the line. Following an extensive refurbishment, and its Celestyal debut in late 2023, it's the youngest member of the line's fleet.

Holding about 1,200 passengers, Celestyal Journey is small enough that you'll still receive a personalized experience but large enough to offer a multitude of onboard amenities. Enjoy yourself at the spa and fitness center, eight bars, seven restaurants, a chef's table experience and two pools. The ship offers 630 cabins, including 149 balcony cabins, 120 junior suites and 28 full-fledged suite accommodations.

Itineraries offered by Celestyal Journey range from four to 28 nights, departing from either Athens or Thessaloniki. Most voyages include calls on well-known Greek ports like Santorini, Rhodes and Mykonos, while longer sailings also venture to places in Turkey and Montenegro. Prices start from $89 per person, per night, for an inside cabin.

Bottom line

The Greek islands are amongst Europe's most appealing cruise destinations, home to dazzling white sugarcube villages, gorgeous beaches, enticing tavernas and the sun-baked ruins of ancient civilisations. Read on for our pick of the best small ship cruises to the Greek Islands.

A cruise is the perfect way to experience the best of Greece, allowing you to hop from island to island without worrying about ferry timetables and hotel reservations. Not all Greek island cruises are created equal, however.

Popular islands such as Santorini and Mykonos feature on the itineraries of all the main cruise lines, and although they undeniably have their charms, they can be overrun with day-trippers during the summer high season. A small ship cruise, on the other hand, allows you to visit the smaller, quieter islands that the big ships can't reach, places where you'll have idyllic beaches and stunning ruins almost to yourself.

Most cruises focused on the Greek islands will be round-trip itineraries from Athens, but you'll also find voyages that combine Greece with Italy, Croatia and the Adriatic, using Venice or Rome as turnaround ports. Some cruises also include the Holy Land or pass through the islands on repositioning voyages towards the Middle East, while others include ports on the Aegean coast of Turkey, with some voyages beginning or ending in the wonderful city of Istanbul.

The season usually runs from May to October, with July and August the busiest (and hottest) time to visit. On a cruise visiting the smaller islands you'll almost always be tendered ashore, and each island has its own appeal, whether you're interested in history, cuisine, beaches, nature or all of the above.

Our clients are often surprised to discover that the number of Greek island cruises on offer each summer is quite limited, so it pays to book early. Here is our guide to eight of the best small ship cruise lines visiting the Greek Islands.

Best small ship cruises to the Greek Islands

1. seadream yacht club.

A firm Mundy favourite, the intimate yachts of SeaDream carry just 112 lucky guests, with a laid-back, al fresco style that is perfectly suited to exploring the sun-kissed Greek islands.

Itineraries include the glamour destinations of Mykonos and Santorini, as well as smaller islands such as rugged, fertile Naxos and the upmarket island of Patmos, where Saint John is said to have written the Book of Revelations.

2. Windstar Cruises

The small ships of Windstar Cruises are particularly popular with first-time cruisers, as well as those who prefer a more casual ambience on board, and their destination-focused itineraries visit many of the Mediterranean's smaller ports.

The 148-guest Wind Star and Wind Spirit as well as 342-guest Wind Surf all operate a number of round-trip voyages from Athens, calling at islands including Rhodes, Crete and Santorini, with the ship's marina ensuring you can enjoy the complimentary watersports when anchored in the Greek Islands' hidden bays and tiny coves.

French cruise line Ponant has undergone significant expansion over the last few years, and their chic Explorer Class yachts as well as their slightly older, beautiful Sister Ships both offer an extensive Greek islands programme.

An Athens round-trip ticks off the big hitters like Mykonos and Santorini, while more unusual itineraries call at sleepy Symi, reachable only by smaller cruise ships, traffic-free Hydra and off-the-beaten-track Limnos.

4. Sea Cloud Cruises

For those who love the romance of sail, Sea Cloud Cruises is the perfect choice. These magnificent three- and four-masted ships are a throwback to another age, and are a true sight to behold as they sail through the warm waters of the Mediterranean, showcasing the fascinating spectacle of hoisting all the sails by hand - a process that can take a full hour to complete.

You'll be the envy of other cruisers when you arrive at islands such as Paxos, Spetses, Patmos and Milos, and with a maximum of 136 guests the ships are able to visit those smaller ports that the bigger vessels can't reach.

5. Silversea

Silversea pioneered the all-inclusive luxury cruise concept, and are renowned for their personal service and varied itineraries. Their 'classic' fleet ranges in size from the 296-guest Silver Wind to Silver Spirit , which accommodates 608 guests, and they offer a number of Greek island itineraries.

Silversea tend to stick to the better known islands such as Rhodes, Corfu, Santorini and Mykonos on Athens round-trips or culminating in Venice, on itineraries of varying lengths between 7 and 14 nights.

6. Seabourn

Seabourn's fleet of small ships is the most modern of all the ultra-luxury lines, with three 458-guest sister ships and Encore and Ovation , both of which carry 604 pampered travellers.

Seabourn is a great choice if you're looking for a longer Greek islands cruise, with 14-night voyages that include Skopelos, Naxos, Santorini and Kos, as well as calls in Malta and Sicily. There are also some itineraries that combine Greece with Croatia and Slovenia, and occasionally you'll find even longer cruises that carry on to Dubai and beyond.

7. Crystal Cruises

Multi-award-winning Crystal Cruises are one of the best in the business, with a luxury all-inclusive product that includes fabulous dining, sumptuous accommodation and the very highest levels of personalised service, which has been enhanced since their relaunch in February 2023.

Their two newly-refurbished ships, the 606-guest Crystal Symphony and 740-guest Crystal Serenity , will visit the Med between April and August this year and next, with itineraries calling at islands including Mykonos, Paros and Patmos, home to fabulous beaches and upmarket restaurants and bars.

best small ship cruises to the Greek Islands

To combine a luxurious cruise with the Greek islands' history and culture, look no further than Emerald Cruises. Their yacht-like Emerald Azzurra is one of the most luxurious ships at sea, alongside an intimate, relaxed style as well as an infinity-style pool, al fresco Sky Bar, wellness area and marina at the back of the yacht, allowing you to hop straight into the bright blue coves surrounding the Greek islands with a host of water toys.

Itineraries visit key sites of historical interest such as Delos and Rhodes, as well as big hitters like Mykonos and Santorini and smaller, unspoilt islands like Lefkada's yacht-dotted Nydri and the classic whitewashed houses and blue-domed churches of Paros, with lots of options to extend your trip with pre- or post-cruise stays in Athens.

Moderately paced, and may include some early morning hotel departures, one or two on-tour flights, and extended motor coach travel.

Cultural Journeys and Expeditions

A Mediterranean cruise unlike any other on a voyage from Greece to the islands of Mykonos, Crete and Rhodes to Turkey...

Embark on a small ship odyssey to Greek islands and the 'Land of Four Seasons' - Turkey, where you'll experience unforgettable wines, local cuisines, cultures, ruins of lost empires, blazing sunsets, temples, Crusader citadels, and far flung, mystical landscapes where gods and mythologies were born.

Magical Island of Mykonos

Two ways to spend your day – and a master class in olive oil.

A choice of sightseeing excursions awaits you in Mykonos... On one, transfer by boat to the local island of Delos, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a treasure trove of ancient archeological sites – you'll be able to visualize Greek life as it once was. Ephesus' Library of Celsus

Although the ancient city of Ephesus, in what is now Turkey, was originally built by the Greeks in the 10th century AD, much of the ruins you'll see at the site today date to the city's Roman period – like the famed Library of Celsus, constructed in the 2nd century AD to memorialize a Roman governor of Asia. Only the facade of this remarkable building has survived, but restored and re-erected, it is a stunning example of Roman urban architecture...

Situated right in the heart of Athens since 1874, the five-star, landmark Hotel Grande Bretagne offers an unrivalled perspective of the Greek capital's mythical history, with breathtaking views of the fabled Acropolis, regal Syntagma Square and the Parliament, lush Lycabettus Hill or the original Olympic Stadium. A favorite of celebrities and dignitaries for more than 140 years, this historic hotel is also within walking distance of exclusive shopping areas, museums and the business district.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Greece and Turkey. Although Turkey usually requires foreign visitors to obtain a visa in order to enter the country, Tauck guests traveling aboard a ship are part of a validated escorted shore excursion and are thus not required to obtain an individual Turkish visa (regardless of their citizenship). You do not need a visa for Greece.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally , you should contact a consulate or embassy of Greece to determine what travel documentation is required.

International maritime security guidelines require that your passport information be provided to us prior to your embarkation. You need to provide this information to us as soon as you book your cruise or boarding may be denied. Once you board the cruise ship, your passport will be held by the purser until you disembark.

You will be issued a boarding card, which you must present before embarking the ship in each port. This security measure also ensures that only Tauck guests are permitted onboard.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies .

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

A doctor and limited medical facilities are available onboard. However, if you take special medications, please bring an adequate supply with you; they may not be available onboard. Medical services and all medicines (except acetaminophen, aspirin and anti-nausea pills) dispensed to you by the ship's doctor will be charged to your shipboard account. If you become ill during the voyage and the physician is unable to care for your needs onboard, you will be transferred to medical facilities onshore.

The Windstar cruise ships are registered in the Bahamas. Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Some of the countries visited on this itinerary may require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against certain diseases in order to enter the country.  These requirements are subject to frequent change as outbreaks occur and subside in different areas, and it is therefore crucial that you obtain the very latest information on entry requirements as you prepare for your journey.

For the most current information, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by clicking here  and the World Health Organization (WHO) by clicking here . You may also wish to visit the web sites for the embassies of the countries you will be visiting.  Besides providing details on vaccination requirements, these sites can also provide information on vaccinations that may be recommended (but aren't required) and other potential health issues for which no vaccines are available.

Any decisions relating to your health, of course, should not be based solely on information provided by a web site.  It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources.

Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective.  Also, be certain to ask your physician for proof of any vaccinations you receive, and to pack this proof along with your other travel documents in your carry-on luggage (not in your checked luggage).

Researching and complying with vaccination entry requirements for the countries visited on this itinerary is the responsibility of the traveler and not Tauck. Tauck is therefore not responsible for any expenses incurred or disruptions to travel caused by improper or incomplete vaccinations, or by the failure to provide proof of required vaccinations.

If you do not obtain the necessary vaccinations and proper documentation, you may be denied entry into one or more countries, or temporarily quarantined until the necessary vaccinations are administered, or until proper documentation is provided.

To enjoy this cruise, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot.  Many of the sites visited were built in antiquity and have many steps and uneven surfaces. It is important that you wear sturdy, comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in. The amount of walking that you choose to do, however, is at your discretion. Additionally, you should be steady on your feet to circumnavigate the decks of the ship while cruising on the Aegean Sea. Some ship-to-shore transportation is by local tender.  Occasionally you may get wet with spray.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Smoking is not permitted on the motor coaches or inside the ship, including inside staterooms. Smoking is only permitted on the outer decks in the designated smoking areas. These regulations pertain to e-cigarettes as well.

Greek Island Small Ship Cruises

Island hopping in the beautiful greek islands.

Overview | Cruises

Greek Island Hopping Holidays

If you're looking for an unforgettable holiday, consider a Greek island cruise. These island hopping cruises take you to some of the most beautiful and historic islands in the Mediterranean, and they're perfect for tourists and travellers of all ages.  Our Greek Island Hopping Holidays take in famous archaeological sites, enjoy delicious Mediterranean food, take in wonderful scenery, soak up the sun as well as plenty of time for relaxation on beautiful beaches. The great thing about our island hopping cruises is the fact you get to see several beautiful greek islands during your holiday. The Greek Islands, steeped in myth, with their rich history and breath-taking scenery, call to mind the romanticism of Homer and the bravery of the ancient heroes. The only quest which you will be undertaking is the search for absolute relaxation, whether that is reading a book on deck, soaking up the sun, or exploring ancient history on shore.

Our Greek Islands small ship cruises set sail from Athens and include stops on the most famous of the Greek islands including Santorini and Mykonos as well as lesser known small, picturesque islands such as Naxos and Paros. We have an extensive selection of luxury Greek Island Cruises such as Antiquity to Byzantium small ship Cruise, Athens & Greek Islands cruise holidays, Greece & Adriatic small ship cruise, Greek Islands cruise & stay holidays, Luxury Greek Island cruises, variety cruises and much more. On board you will enjoy a high standard of personal service combined with excellent cuisine. A typical small ship cruise in the Greek Islands has around 25 cabins and employs 16 - 20 crew including a professional ship manager, tour guides and service managers. Your itinerary will be planned by your expert tour guide, who will let you know every evening what the programme is for the following day and give you an insight into the culture and history of the places you will be exploring.  Greek Island hopping cruises are brilliant for seeing more of the beautiful islands and packing more into your holiday.

Why Should I Choose A Small Ship Cruise

Small ship cruises in Greece offer a more intimate and personalised travel experience compared to large cruise ships. Some of the benefits of small ship cruises include:

1.      Flexibility: Small ship cruises can access ports and locations that larger ships cannot, giving passengers the opportunity to visit unique and remote destinations not possible on larger vessels.

2.      Personalised experience: With fewer passengers, small ship cruises offer a more personalised experience. The crew can provide individual attention to each guest, and the itinerary can be customised to suit the group's preferences.

3.      Privacy: Small ship cruises allow for a more private and intimate experience. Passengers can enjoy the ship's amenities without the crowds and queues that are common on larger ships.

4.      Cultural immersion: Small ship cruises often offer opportunities to learn about the local culture and traditions of the destinations visited. This can include onboard lectures, local guides, and authentic cultural experiences.

5.      Eco-friendly: Small ships have a smaller environmental footprint than larger cruise ships. They consume less fuel and produce fewer emissions, making them a more sustainable choice for travellers who are concerned about their impact on the environment.

Our small ship cruises provide a unique and immersive island hopping experience that is well-suited for travellers who value intimacy, flexibility, and cultural immersion. Diamond Star Experience have a fabulous collection of Greek Island cruises with luxury small ship and Gulet cruises ideal for greek island hopping holidays.

Small-Ship Cruise Lines in Greece

Seabourn Cruise Line

6100 Blue Lagoon Dr., Suite 400, Miami, FL 33126. tel. 800/929-9391. www.seabourn.com.

The top of the line in the cruise world, Seabourn excels in many areas, including food, service, itineraries, and a luxurious and refined environment. These cruises are pricey, and the customers who can afford them are well-traveled sophisticates used to being doted on.

Although the ambience can be casual during the day, it becomes decidedly more formal in the evening, although new dining options with modern cuisine and an "always informal" option at the restaurant at the top of the ship go a way to making it feel more casual. There's an open-bar policy (all alcoholic and soft drinks are included in the fare) and lots of open, teak decks, which make these ships very yachtlike. The ships are all-suite with marble bathrooms, walk-in closets, plush software, stocked mini bars, elegant fine dining and more.

Nighttime entertainment is low key, though cabaret nights with themes like 1950s rock 'n' roll can get the audience going.

Seabourn has three nearly identical ships, and a trio of new larger ships. The Seabourn Legend (built in 1992; 208 passengers; 10,000 GRTs) and Seabourn Pride (built in 1991; 208 passengers; 10,000 GRTs) dip into the Greek Isles, though the newer larger Seabourn Odyssey (built in 2009; 450 passengers; 32,000 GRTs) and Seabourn Quest (built in 2011; 450 passengers; 32,000 GRTs) offer many more Greek itineraries.

All cabins on the Seabourn Legend and Pride are outside suites, many with French balconies -- sliding doors you can open to let in the ocean breezes (the ships were built before full balconies were all the rage). The other cabins have 1.5m-wide (5-ft.) picture windows, plenty big enough to make the room bright and airy. Owner's suites are plush and offer private verandas.

The Seabourn Odyssey and Quest boast verandas on 90% of all staterooms. There is a main open-eating restaurant, two alternative venues, plus a poolside grille. Enjoy a two-level state-of-the-art gym and spa, which includes a pair of spa villas.

Seabourn Odyssey Seven-day Athens-to-Istanbul cruise calls at Mylos, Rhodes, Patmos, Khylos, Kusadasi (Turkey). May 8; July 3; August 21. Rates: From $5,135. Seven-day Istanbul-to-Athens cruise calls at Dikili (Turkey), Kusadasi (Turkey), Bodrum (Turkey), Santorini, Mylos, Nauplion. May 15; July 10, July 31; August 28. Rates: From $5,135. Seven-day Venice-to-Athens cruise calls at Sibenik (Croatia), Bari (Italy), Cephalonia, Katakolon, Gythion, Mykonos. May 29; June 26; August 14. Rates: From $5,530. Seven-day Athens-to-Istanbul, Istanbul-to-Athens and Venice-to-Athens, Athens-to-Venice cruises continue until October 23.

Seabourn Spirit Seven-day Civitavecchia-to-Athens cruise calls at Sorrento (Italy), Lipari (Italy), Katakolon, Itea, Nafplion. May 8. Rates: From $4,260.

Sea Cloud Cruises

32-40 N. Dean St., Englewood, NJ 07631. tel. 888/732-2568. www.seacloud.com.

The flagship vessel Sea Cloud (built in 1931; 64 passengers; 2,532 GRTs) was built for heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post, who was involved in the design and construction of the sailing ship, planning the layout of the vessel down to where the antiques would be placed. At the time it was the largest sailing yacht to be built. The Sea Cloud served as a military support ship during World War II, was briefly owned by Dominican Republic dictator Rafael Trujillo, and sat tied up for 8 years before it was bought by a Hamburg-based group in the late 1970s and given a new, luxurious lease on life.

Guests can still see the care that Post originally put into it: Fireplaces in the cabins, antiques, marble, and shining wood. In the owner's suite, guests sleep in a Louis XIV-style bed next to a decorative marble fireplace; the bathroom alone is 9 sq. m (97 sq. ft.). The Category 5 cabins, on the other hand, are upper-and-lower berths, but Sea Cloud points out that since the cabins open to the promenade deck guests can sleep with the doors open to let in the sea air. Sailing buffs will be happy to gaze up at the 3,973 sq. m (32,000 sq. ft.) of sail -- it has 36 separate sails, from the flying jib to the mizzen royal to the jigger gaff.

Sea Cloud is often chartered out by tour operators, who set their own itineraries for the ship; contact Sea Cloud for information on additional Greece cruises through tour operators. The company has a total of four vessels, including a riverboat.

Sea Cloud Seven-day round-trip Athens cruise calls at Crete, Mylos, Naxos, Siros, Nafplion. May 31. Rates: From $4,515. Seven-day Athens-to-Istanbul cruise calls at Mylos, Siros, Patmos, Kusadasi (Turkey), Dikili (Turkey), Lesbos. June 7; July 9. Rates: From $4,515. Seven-day Athens-to-Istanbul cruise calls at Mylos, Santorini, Marmaris, Rhodes, Patmos, Kusadasi (Turkey). July 31. Rates: From $4,515.

Seadream Yacht Club

2601 S. Bayshore Dr., Penthouse 1B, Coconut Grove, FL 33133. tel. 800/707-4911. www.seadreamyachtclub.com.

The owner and operator of SeaDream Yacht Club, Atle Brynestad, has a luxury-line pedigree as the founder of Seabourn Cruise Line. For more than 10 years, he has been carrying on the Seabourn tradition of luxury and elegance, on a smaller, more casual, yachtlike scale. SeaDream in 2001 purchased the Sea Goddess I and Sea Goddess II from Seabourn, and after renovations renamed them SeaDream I and SeaDream II (built in 1984; 116 passengers; 4,260 GRTs). Updated in 2009, the ships have all new bedding and one additional suite.

The company defines itself not as a cruise line but an ultraluxury yacht company whose vessels journey to smaller, less-visited destinations. Guests are offered an unstructured, casually elegant vacation (no formal nights) with plenty of diversions. Toys carried aboard include jet skis and mountain bikes. You can dine outdoors or indoors; there are enough tables to accommodate all the passengers in one outdoor lunch seating. None of the cabins have private balconies, but the line often urges guests to treat the teak decks as one large veranda where you can sprawl on bed-size Balinese loungers. With advanced reservations, they will even make the beds up for you with a turndown service so you can sleep under the stars. Another evening option is to meet for a drink at the Top of the Yacht Bar -- SeaDream has an open-bar policy.

Seadream II Ten-day Venice (Italy) to Athens cruise calls at Split (Croatia), Korcula (Croatia), Dubrovnik (Croatia, overnight), Kotor (Montenegro), Sarande (Albania), Delphi, Mykonos, Santorini, Hydra. May 30. Rates: From $6,999. Seven-day round-trip Athens cruise calls at Delos, Mykonos, Rhodes, Fethiye (Turkey), Gocek (Turkey), Bodrum (Turkey, overnight), Hydra. June 9. Rates: From $4,999. Seven-day round-trip Athens cruise calls at Hydra, Delphi, Olympia/Katakolon, Gythion, Elafonsios, Santorini. June 16. Rates: From $5,199. Seven-day Athens to Istanbul (Turkey) cruise calls at Hydra, Santorini, Paros Island, Patmos, Ephesus/Kusadasi (Turkey), Kepez (Turkey). June 23. Rates: From $5,199.

Silversea Cruises

110 E. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301. tel. 800/722-9055. www.silversea.com.

The luxurious Silver Wind (built in 1995; 296 passengers; 16,800 GRTs) and newer and larger Silver Spirit (built in 2009; 540 passengers; 36,000 GRTs) carry their guests in splendor and elegance. Passengers are generally well traveled and used to the good life. Fares include all alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages along with tips.

Aboard both the Wind and the Spirit, all accommodations are outside suites with writing tables, sofas, walk-in closets, marble bathrooms, stocked minibars, and all the amenities you'd expect of top-of-the-line ships. Throughout, both vessels allot more space to each passenger than most other ships. Dine on some of the best cuisine at sea in open-seating restaurants that allow you dine when and with whom you desire. The larger Spirit boasts four restaurants, including La Terrazza for indoor or alfresco dining with breakfast and lunch buffets; Le Champagne for a six-course epicurean experience in an intimate atmosphere; The Pool Grill for lunch and dinner; the intimate Seishin Restaurant for a range of Asian-fusion menu items, from Kobe beef and spider lobster to caviar and lots of sushi choices (per-person degustation menu cost is $40); and the Stars Supper Club, where live music, dancing, and nightclub-style entertainment complement the innovative menus and provide a relaxed feeling.

Star Clippers

7200 NW 19th St., Suite 206, Miami, FL 33126. tel. 800/442-0550. www.starclippers.com.

Star Clipper (built in 1991; 170 passengers; 2,298 GRTs) is the name of the handsome old-timey vessel this three-ship line, named Star Clippers, is sending to Greece in 2012. It's a replica of the big 19th-century clipper sailing ships (or barkentines) that once circled the globe. Its tall square rigs carry enormous sails, are glorious to look at, and are a particular thrill for history buffs. And on this ship, the 3,345 sq. m (36,000 sq. ft.) of billowing sails are more than window dressing. The Star Clipper was constructed using original drawings and specifications of a leading 19th-century naval architect, but updated with modern touches so that today it is among the tallest (68m/226 ft.) and fastest clipper ships built.

The atmosphere onboard is akin to being on a private yacht rather than on a mainstream cruise ship. It's active and casual in an L.L. Bean sort of way, and friendly too. Cabins are decorated with wood accents; the top categories have doors that open up directly onto the deck. There is one owner's suite. The public rooms include an open-seating dining room, and an Edwardian-style library with a Belle Epoque fireplace and bookshelf-lined walls. There are two small swimming pools. Local entertainment is sometimes brought aboard and movies might be shown, plus you can always count on silly contests and games at the deck bar as part of the after-dinner offerings. Other activities on the ship tend toward the nautical, such as visiting the bridge, observing the crew handle the sails, and participating in knot-tying classes. Or you can just pad around the decks and lie in a deck chair underneath the sails. When seas are calm you can lie in the rigging.

Star Seven-day round-trip Athens cruise to the northern Greek islands calls at Camilimani (Turkey), Kusadasi (Turkey), Patmos, Amorgos, Mykonos, and Monemvasia. Once a month or so between May and October. Rates: From $2,075. Seven-day round-trip Athens cruise to the southern Greek islands calls at Rhodes, Bodrum (Turkey), Daylan River (Turkey), Santorini, Hydra. Once a month or so between May and October. Rates: From $2,075.

Swan Hellenic Cruises

Lynnem House, 1 Victoria Way, Burgess Hill, West Sussex, RH15 9NF. tel. 800/257-5767 or 0844 871 4603. www.swanhellenic.com

This British company founded in 1954 excels in small-ship cruising and features the Minerva (built in 1996; 320 passengers; 12,500 GRTs). The line appeals to those who really want to learn something about a destination. Escorted shore excursions are included in the fares (and so are all tips) and impressive guest lectures speak about the islands' history and culture. Called a "country house at sea," the ship has two open-seating restaurants, two bars, a cinema, swimming pool, gym, spa, salon, and beautiful tiered decks and teak promenade offering plenty of vantage points for sightseeing. For some downtime, bring a book and your daydreams to the conservatory-style Shackleton's Bar, with its cane chairs and potted palms.

Minerva Fourteen-day Sharm-El-Sheikh (Egypt) to Athens cruise overnights in Sharm-El-Sheikh and calls at Sokhna (Egypt, overnight), Cairo/Giza (Alexandria, Egypt), Damascus (Syria), Latakia (Syria), Antalya (Turkey), Fethiye (Turkey), Santorini, Athens (overnight). Travel Dynamics International

132 E. 70th St., New York, NY 10021. tel. 800/257-5767. www.traveldynamicsinternational.com.

This operator of small ships offers a number of interesting itineraries that include Greek ports, and no wonder: The cofounders of Travel Dynamics are two Greek brothers from the island of Rhodes. The journeys are tailored to be unique, visiting some of the smaller and lesser-known ports. Top-notch onboard educational programs complement the itineraries, and shore excursions are included in the cruise price. This line won't attract the budget-minded passenger or the folks who want to laze around. Itineraries are fast paced and educational. Each day has several components: a museum in the morning and an archaeological site in the afternoon, for example. The company's itineraries often include references to the nearby sites (Iraklion for Knossos or Gortyn, for example).

Variety Cruises

494 Eighth Ave., 22nd Floor, New York, NY 10001. tel. 800/319-7776. www.varietycruises.com.

These line's Greek-flagged and -operated yachts might be just the ticket if you're looking for a casual, intimate experience with a more international flavor. Formerly known as Zeus Tours, the cruise portion of the company has been around since the mid-1960s when it chartered the yacht Eleftherios; it began scheduled weekly cruise service in 1973. Today, it divides its ships into three divisions. The more upmarket Variety Cruises division emphasizes a blend of cruising and yachting, relaxing, and exploring Greece's historical treasures. Ships in this fleet include the yacht Harmony G (built in 2001; 46 passengers; 490 GRTs).

There are sun decks but no pools except for the surrounding Mediterranean: passengers can swim off the side of the ship during swim stops. Fares include two meals a day, breakfast and then either lunch or dinner, depending on the itinerary, which gives guests the chance to eat and drink in port. There's no organized onboard entertainment per se, except for chatting with other guests in the saloon or while catching rays on deck. And with only a couple dozen other guests, you'll probably get to know everyone within a day. Open-seating dinner helps with the mingling.

Harmony G Seven-day round-trip Athens cruise call at Nauplion/Mycenae, Gythion, Pylos, Olympia/Katakolon, Delphi. February 17, February 24; March 2, March 9, March 16, March 23; April 13. Rates: From $1,071.

Voyages of Antiquity

The midsize Aegean Odyssey (built in 1973; 350 passengers; 11,563 GRTs) is a cozy boutique-style ship with classic lines and a retro feel. Built as a ferry, the ship was converted to a cruise ship in 1988 and extensively refurbished. Perfect for history buffs and class ship lovers, the Aegean Odyssey is an old-world gem, with two restaurants, six bars and lounges, a library, theater, Internet center, spa, and salon. Expert lecturers, often professors and historians, sail on board to educate guests about the region and fares include excursions; pre- and/or posthotel stays in Athens or Istanbul or Rome; all meals; free wine, beer, or soft drinks with the evening meal; and tips. Voyages of Antiquity is geared to sophisticated travelers looking to be immersed in the destination and the focus is on education and learning.

Windstar Cruises

2101 Fourth Ave., Suite 1150, Seattle, WA 98121. tel. 87-STAR-SAIL (877/827-7245). www.windstarcruises.com.

Although they look like sailing ships of yore, Wind Star and Wind Spirit (built in 1986 and 1988; 144 passengers; 5,350 GRTs) and their bigger sister Wind Surf (built in 1990; 312 passengers; 14,745 GRTs) are more like floating luxury hotels with the flair of sailing ships. These vessels feature top-notch service and cuisine, yet have a wonderful casual vibe. Million-dollar computers operate the sails, and stabilizers allow for a smooth ride.

Windstar deploys its two smaller vessels, Wind Spirit and Wind Star, in the Greek islands. Casual, low-key elegance is the style. There's no set regime and no dress code above "resort casual." Most of the passengers are well heeled; the ships appeal to all ages except children. (There are no dedicated kids' facilities onboard the ships.)

None of the roomy outside cabins have balconies, but they do have large portholes. The top-level owner's cabins are slightly bigger. Refurbishments in 2009 include flatscreen TVs and DVD players; new mattresses, bedding, carpet, and curtains for the cabins; an expanded gym; and an updated spa.

A watersports platform at the stern allows for a variety of activities when the ships are docked. Entertainment is low key and sometimes includes local entertainers brought aboard at ports of call. Most of the onboard time revolves around the sun deck, plunge pool, and outdoor bar. The ships also have small casinos.

Small Ship Mediterranean Cruises: Where to Sail

Where to go in this widespread, popular destination? The following is an overview of Mediterranean small ship cruise regions, with notes on the best places for small ship. Our guidance on where to sail in the Mediterranean is separated into four broad categories based on the most common small ship Mediterranean cruise routes:

A map with beige and blue colors showing the popular small Mediterranean cruise region and waters around Greece, Italy and Croatia.

Cruises to Croatia, Dalmatian Coast, Albania, Montenegro

The southernmost shoreline of Croatia, running from the island of Rab south to the Bay of Kotor, is a popular stretch of coastline for Adriatic Sea cruises. Almost all Croatia small ship cruises visit this Dalmatia region, one of the best places to visit in the Mediterranean.

Historic hillside towns made of brick and terracotta drop down to the sea in dramatic fashion. Fortified castles standing guard at the water’s edge (some of which can be seen in the TV series “Game of Thrones.”) This trendy region offers ancient Roman marble palaces, quiet beaches on small off-shore islands, cultural dances by engaging locals, world-renowned wine tasting and delectable dishes. Other Adriatic Sea cruise routes aboard small ships include the ports of Venice, Naples or even Athens.

Small Ship Greek Island Cruises

Greece is one of the Mediterranean’s most popular cruising destinations. With over 200 islands they are ideal for small ship cruising. Many small ship Greek Island cruises hit the popular ports of Mykonos and Santorini as well as the Corinth Canal. But we recommend routes that explore lesser known gems too. We recommend Peloponnese Peninsula and Cyclades cruises, which operate round-trip from Athens, Greece. Select routes take you far north as Corfu and the other Ionian Islands. Some itineraries even connect south to Egypt!

Small Ship Cruises to Greece and Turkey, Croatia or Egypt

If you’re looking to go farther afield, some Greece small ship cruises continue on to visit other nearby countries. The Aegean Sea takes center stage for small ship cruises to Turkey and Greece. The Aegean Islands are a collection of stunning landscapes, historical monuments and mythical legends. They are mostly under Greek sovereignty, though some eastern islands and smaller islets are under Turkish rule.

Turkey’s Bodrum with its Mausoleum at Halicarnassus one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the vibrant Kusadasi market are highlights for cruises that include Turkey.

Small ship Mediterranean cruises that sail up the western coast of Greece and into the Adriatic Sea often include stops in Albania and Montenegro before finishing in Croatia. On a Dubrovnik to Athens cruise, for example, you can see the highlights of both of these iconic countries while not setting foot in an airport. These extended Croatia small ship cruise options are all excellent choices if you have time for a longer sailing.

Italy, Malta & Western Mediterranean Cruises (Spain, Portugal, France)

Italy has long been one of the best places to visit in the Mediterranean, but the small ship experience provides unique insights and exclusive access to sites not often visited. Unspoiled clifftop towns, sites of antiquity and incredible food and wine are highlights of Italy cruises. Mediterranean small ship cruises that include stops in Italy are fast-becoming favorites for travelers who want to skip crowded overland travel.

Look for popular routes from Venice or Naples that include Dubrovnik, Croatia, and small islets in the Adriatic Sea. Opt for cruises around Sicily and Malta, or continue west with Mediterranean small ship cruise itineraries that visit Mallorca, Menorca, Corsica, Lisbon, Porto and other must-see ports.

Temperature & Rainfall

Subtropic Summer Cruising

The Mediterranean consists of a subtropic climate providing relatively mild winters and very warm summers, making it a perfect destination for small ship cruises . The temperature is moderated by nearby large bodies of water making for comfortable conditions throughout most of the year. The best time of year for small ship Mediterranean cruises is April through November.

What Our Travelers Say About Their Mediterranean Cruise

Photo by Adventure Specialist Andrew Browning

Both the Sea Cloud and the land explorations were superb. We found Corsica to be particularly fascinating.

AdventureSmith is a very professional organization that is a pleasure to work with. This was our third, but certainly not last trip with AdventureSmith.

Accommodations, ship and staff were all excellent. Met several great people/couples, all were enjoyable. The Smithsonian lectures and tour guides were very good.

We enjoyed everything from the accommodations, tours, food and like-minded guests. We definitely have great memories and would recommend this trip to other friends and family.

All was great - from pre planning to the actual travel.

The staff was wonderful! The children love them.

  • Sea Cloud: Lindblad

AdventureSmith is a very professional organization that is a pleasure to work with. This was our third, but certainly not last trip with AS. The trip included 5 days in Athens, Greece and a week aboard the Sea Cloud through Lindblad. We found Lindblad a little rigid to work with during the planning stages.  In Greece, they were outstanding. The Sea Cloud is a gorgeous sailing barque. The crew, both Lindblad and Sea Cloud, were warm, gracious and a delight to sail with. My wife had always wanted to visit Greece. I love sailing. The combination got us.

I think Santorini was a top destination. It's a beautiful island that I would stay on. The smaller islands were interesting as well.

Room was, as expected, tight quarters. It's an old ship, after all. The public areas are great. The upper deck is a beautiful place for cocktails, or just relaxing. Seeing the Sea Cloud under sail is a real treat.

Meals Review

Food was excellent. I think I probably gained weight, but that's my fault. I preferred the buffet dinners to the served ones. Variety was excellent. Lot's of great salads. Good seafood and fresh fish.

All of the people leading the expedition are true professionals. They know their stuff. One of the regular speakers has her PHD in archeology and is a real expert on the region and Greek history.  I was really impressed with all of them. The two regular guides are Greek and have many years experience in the areas we visited. One of our Lindblad guides, a native Greek, was much too insistent on trying to tell us all about the Greek Orthodox religion. As a non-Christian, I found it a little off-putting. She knew her stuff, but seemed anxious to proselytize...

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Between AdventureSmith and Lindblad, we were well prepared. We made our own flight arrangements, but AS was very helpful. I cannot say enough good about our experience both with AdventureSmith and with Lindblad.

  • Sailing the Greek Isles Aboard Sea Cloud

First, the "dinners" would not stop me from recommending the cruise. For a French cruise line I had very high expectations, maybe too high. Other passengers had similar comments. Overall good, 5 star vessel, 3 star dinners. Other meals very good.

Overall good. Some details on shore excursion's were lacking. More free time at each would be have been nice.

Itinerary Review

All [places were] enjoyable in there different ways. The hiking excursion although very interesting was poorly planned, more difficult (for the old passengers) and much longer than we were told.

Very thorough with all the details.

The vessel was well appointed and had everything we needed for our week long stay. The staff was great as well and worked so hard to make sure everyone was happy and attended to.

I especially liked the local cuisine that they provided, with the wonderful Greek Salads and other selections. The only improvement on breakfast would be to provide brewed coffee as what was provided was instant coffee in tea-like bags That would probably be the only improvement.

Dittmar, the manager on board/tour director who did everything to provide us with information, changing tours to meet the changing weather conditions and providing information in a very professional, upbeat and pleasant way. He really kept everything going smoothly on board. He was very organized, provided excellent information on each island and really was great in every way. We also met one of the owners of the Variety ships, Christian, who introduced himself upon our arrival to the boat. That was a surprise!

I really liked ALL the locations we visited but enjoyed most Monemvassia and Santorini. We had a fantastic trip. Although we experienced some cooler/windier weather than is normal for this time of year, everything worked out really well. The ship staff was awesome and was professional, personable and thorough. Due to rough waters they had to turn the itinerary around and make all new tour reservations and many other last minute arrangements, adding a few different locations than expected. They did all this very well.

Transportation Review

All transportation arrangements went very smoothly and we were either provided the transportation or given the information (hotel in Athens) we needed to make our own. The hotel suggested was beautiful and first rate, with amazing views of the Acropolis from the rooftop restaurant.

Fellow Passengers Review

We can't say enough good things about all the passengers on board (that we met). There was a group of 30 Road Scholar passengers that we did not interact with too much, but all the other passengers were so pleasant, likeable and very well traveled. We got to know many very well and joined them for meals and tours and restaurants off the boat as well.

Andrew Browning, whom we have used several times to book trips, did his usual great job answering questions and provided timely information and everything we needed ahead of the trip. We have been on a number of trips with family over the years with AdventureSmith and we look forward to many more. Each trip is so memorable and provides great bonding time. I always recommend people to go to your website when looking for a trip.

Traveler Advice

Go to Greece, as we did, during the shoulder months like May and September when the hoards of people are not there. We never had to fight the crowds as you do in the summer months. With climate change, be prepared for unexpected weather and be flexible with tours being changed due to inclimate weather. If  travelers are looking for culture, history and beautiful scenery, this is a great place to go!

Athens hotel was a great location, nice rooms and pool. Older but great for our needs. Ship room was good sized and nice, common decks and dining areas were good. Dated but ideal for our needs.

Breakfast on the ship offered a lot of choices but was pretty much the same each morning.

Athens Delphi tour was great - bus ride took about 2+ hours each way. Syros, Flegandros and Paros were my favorite islands with each having good sites to visit and not too big with good food/shops. Mykonos and Santorini islands where good but very busy and my least favorite.

Airport transportation was on time, nice vehicles and driver.

Perfect group with similar age adult/children. Everyone was active.

The tour guides at Delphi and Parthenon were very good and knowledgeable. Athens guide were great.

Great planning.

The Galileo was very clean and functional. The staff was wonderful! The children love them. The chef was able to accomodate dietary restrictions easily. The food was wonderful! We liked the swim stops. We enjoyed the tours of the islands. Least enjoyed: It rained and the long trip back to Athens on the rough sea was LONG. We were grateful that the weather was beautiful for the rest of the trip.

Greek Island Cruise: The Best Way To Explore Greece?

D o you hate packing and unpacking? I do too. I just got back from a 5-week trip around Greece. During the first part of my trip, I had to switch hotels every couple of nights. Ugh! So it was a relief to finally board the Celestyal Crystal and stay put for my eight-day Greek Island Cruise ! I can’t wait to share with you why I think this is the best Greek Island Cruise to go Greek Island Hopping !

8-Day Greek Island Cruise “Idyllic Aegean”

There are a few reasons why I picked this cruise line and itinerary for my first Greek Island Cruise:

  • The islands on the Idyllic Aegean were on my bucket list (Thessaloniki, Kusadasi/Ephesus, Crete, Santorini, Mykonos, and Milos).
  • Celestyal Cruise Line stays longer at each destination, so you can experience the islands after the crowds leave. This made a BIG difference!!!
  • They offer small group “ authentic excursions ” at many destinations, which is great if you want to have a more custom experience in Greece.
  • With 1200 passengers, the Celestyal Crystal is a relatively small ship, which I prefer.
  • I did the 3-Continent cruise with Celestyal in 2019 and loved it!!!

Greek Island Cruise Itinerary

As I was traveling with my 13-year-old niece, I found the Celestyal Idyllic Aegean cruise itinerary and tours offered a good mix of historical places, great food, beautiful islands, and stunning beaches that made this trip interesting for both of us. Here were some of the highlights at each of the Greek islands we visited.

Day 1: Piraeus/Athens

As we arrived the night before our cruise departed, we didn’t have time to explore Athens or Piraeus before we boarded the ship. I had been to Athens before, but it was my niece’s first time in the city, so we added a few days to explore Athens after the cruise.

We arrived on the ship pretty early, around 11 AM. There was almost no line to check in and we were on board the ship at around 11:15. After checking out our Junior Suite , we explored the ship and had a quick lunch at the buffet. By the time we returned, our bags were waiting for us in the room and we unpacked and got settled in before heading to dinner and watching the evening show “Mama Mia”.

I highly recommend getting to the ship early. Last time we did a cruise out of Piraeus, we checked in after lunch, and not only was the check-in process much longer due to long lines, but the whole day felt more rushed.

Starting in September, you might be lucky to sail on the newest ship of the Celestyal fleet, the Celestyal Journey . This 1260 cabin ship features 149 suites, two pools, seven restaurants, and eight lounges and bars. Can’t wait to sail on it, too!

Day 2: Thessaloniki

On our first stop, we explored the second-largest city of Greece, Thessaloniki, on a food tour. This was an “authentic experiences” tour, and it was fantastic. We were a small group of 6 hungry travelers, ready to eat our way through the city.

Our local guide was fantastic and shared some interesting stories about Thessaloniki while taking us to some of the city’s best restaurants, bakeries, and cafés. We tried things like traditional Greek coffee, bougatsa (phyllo dough pockets stuffed with either sweet cream or cheese), and a traditional meze spread at an ouzeria with all kinds of treats, such as grilled octopus, mussels, fava beans, fried zucchini flowers stuffed with goat cheese, and many more local delicacies.

After our delicious food tour, my niece and I strolled through the city and did some shopping before returning to the ship.

Day 3: Kusadasi/Ephesus

This was my second time in Kusadasi, but the first time for my niece, so we definitely wanted to see Ephesus. The crowds at the end of May/beginning of June were definitely more than the last time I visited in December, but I= think that the UNESCO Heritage site of Ephesus is a must – at least once.

My favorite place in Ephesus is the area of the Terrace houses, which are over 2000 years old. You have to pay an extra entrance fee, but it is worth it to see the stunning mosaics and wall paintings that are incredibly well-preserved.

Afterward, we visited a carpet factory. To be honest, this was not my cup of tea as the experience was very sales-y and I would have preferred some more free time in Kusadasi to explore.

Pro Tip: If you plan on buying sweets and souvenirs, don’t buy it in the shops in town. For many things, the prices inside the cruise ship terminal are much better ($8 vs $22 for a box of Turkish delight).

Day 4: Heraklion, Crete

Crete is the largest Island in Greece, and one of the biggest sights on the island is the Palace of Knossos . Knossos is often referred to as the first city of Europe, dating back to the Neolithic area around 7000 BC.

After spending our previous day in Ephesus, I thought it would be a good idea to skip another day of ruins and go on a scenic drive around the Cretian countryside to a picturesque mountain village instead.

Big mistake! Our tour was quite touristy and not as idyllic as I had hoped. Three big busses of tourists approximately doubled that small village’s population, making it a lot less “quaint.” We overheard several cruise ship guests who had gone to Knossos’s archeological site and LOVED it. I recommend choosing one of the Palace of Knossos excursions for this cruise stop.

Day 5: Santorini

Santorini is by far the most popular Greek island, and we were visiting at the beginning of the high season, so I was expecting big crowds instead of serene Instagram-able scenery. Don’t get me wrong, it was busy, but as all the other cruise ships were leaving, the island transformed and turned into the magical place that drew those crowds in the first place.

We started our day with a winetasting tour and visited two small villages. Our group was about 20 people, and we had a very nice experience without the crowds and saw some beautiful places in Santorini. We visited two wineries: Anhydrous Winery is within walking distance or a short taxi ride from the town of Fira and has excellent wines. But don’t miss Venetsanos Winery ! This winery has stunning views overlooking the whole caldera. What a spot to enjoy a glass of wine, no?

After our tour, we were dropped off near the cable car. As there were five cruise ships in Santorini, the wait time in the afternoon was approximately 1-1.5 hours. I felt bad for the other cruise ship travelers, as their visit to Santorini was cut even shorter by having to stand in line to make it back in time to the last tender.

Celestyal doesn’t leave Santorini until past midnight, so got to enjoy the island when it was a lot less crowded. We strolled up the coastal path to Imerovigli, a small village north of Fira to enjoy the views and then had dinner trying some of the delicious Santorini dishes , overlooking the sunset over the caldera. Definitely worth the splurge for this stunning view.

Our waitress said it was only about 10 more minutes by foot down the switchbacks from the restaurant to the tender boat harbor. That was a lie, ha! I attribute our 30+ minute descent to the fact that I was wearing flimsy sandals (the stones are very slippery!) and that we had to dodge the donkey droppings in the dark with flashlights.

Pro Tip: If you plan on walking up or down to the harbor, wear proper footwear and give yourself a little extra time before the last tender leaves.

Day 6: Mykonos

Since my niece and I enjoyed our food tour in Thessaloniki so much, my niece and I decided to do another one in Mykonos . This time, our group was a little bigger (17 people) but we had the chance to try some delicious food on this tour as well, while also getting to know the port city of Chora.

Mykonos is known as one of the high-society party islands of the Mediterranean and we got to enjoy a little glimpse of it as our ship was again the last one to leave the port well past midnight. Most cruise ships left the island between 3-5 PM. After they left, Mykonos transformed similarly to Santorini and felt like a completely different island.

Day 7: Milos

I was really looking forward to Milos. My niece and I signed up to go kayaking, and I could not wait to see the bright turquoise water with white limestone cliffs. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate. We were still able to kayak and had a fantastic time, but the grey sky turned the water into a similarly bleak color.

However, my niece and I still had a blast. Our guide showed us stunning beaches, hidden caves, and hot springs and even shared homemade snacks with us. It was my niece’s first time kayaking, and she did really well. I was super proud of her for trying something outside her comfort zone, and when we returned to the ship, she couldn’t stop smiling the rest of the day. What a great way to finish our Greek island cruise!

Day 8: Piraeus/Athens

Time flies when you are having fun, and before we knew it, we were already back in Piraeus, and it was time to disembark.

Greek Island Cruise with Celestyal Review

I am so glad I picked Celestyal for my first Greek isles cruise. The small ship, small group tours, and long time in port really made this cruise a perfect fit for me, as I am not a big fan of crowds and like to explore each destination a little deeper. Of course, each island deserves more than just a one-day stop, but I felt I got a good first glimpse of each cruise stop.

If you have limited time and want to see as much as possible and as many places as possible during your trip to Greece, then a Greek island cruise is the most convenient and cost-effective way. Seven different destinations in 8 days would not be possible in any other way.

Of course, a smaller ship like the Celestyal Crystal has not have quite as many amenities as some of those big cruise ships, but it still has everything you expect to find on a cruise ship, including spa, pool, jacuzzi, casino, evening performances and several restaurants. And since there is no sea day and the time in port is so long, I wouldn’t have had much time to take advantage of those amenities anyway.

On the other hand, a smaller ship and longer time in port also means that it is less invasive and disruptive for the locals. Yes, they depend on tourism, but when the roads are so busy that even emergency vehicles can’t get through, you can see the dark side of mass tourism. As we had more time in port, we also had more time to shop, eat, and drink at each destination, supporting the local economy. Celestyal Cruise Line is a Greek company with headquarters in Piraeus, so even the money for the cruise tickets goes back into the Greek economy.

If you are looking for a small ship Greek island cruise that lets you maximize your time at each cruise stop and want to avoid the big crowds, then Celestyal is for you. I highly recommend them and can’t wait to cruise with them again!

T here’s something special about small-ship cruising. You’ll feel a deeper connection to the sea, and there’s a certain pleasure from being docked in chic little ports among the superyachts or anchored in a remote bay far from the crowds. Of course, there won’t be Broadway shows and a choice of restaurants, but simplicity is all part of the appeal. Here are ten of the best small-ship cruises for this year and next.

8. Tall ship Atlantic crossing

Star Flyer

Crossing the Atlantic under sail is special; you’ll have days to commune with the ocean, leaving the stresses of everyday life behind. Join the 170-passenger tall ship Star Flyer in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria — the city from which Columbus set sail in 1492. There’s a stop at the Canary island of La Gomera, then 13 days at sea as you head west to the Tropics, making landfall at St Maarten. On board you can help the crew with the sails, splash around in the pool, have a Thai massage and — on this sailing, which has a yoga theme — practise your sun salutations. Details Fifteen nights’ full board from £2,015pp, departing on November 15 (starclippers.co.uk). Fly to Gran Canaria and back from St Maarten

9. Tempting Tahiti

Moorea

Discover Tahiti in all its high-definition beauty on the small ship Star Breeze, which carries 312 and is based in Papeete. You’ll visit dreamy islands including Bora Bora, Huahine, Moorea and Raiatea on a seven-night meander through French Polynesia, with swimming in turquoise lagoons, rainforest hikes and visits to vanilla plantations and ancient sacred sites on the agenda. One night there’s a special dinner on a private island, followed by a fire-dancing display under the stars. Details Seven nights’ all-inclusive from £6,200pp, including flights and a night in a hotel pre-cruise, departing on October 17 (windstarcruises.com; book by June 30)

10. Wellness in the Cyclades

Milos

Potter round the lesser-visited Greek islands of the Cyclades on the 50-passenger Elysium, a tiny ship that can anchor in smaller harbours, away from the mainstream cruise ships. There’s an emphasis on healthy Greek food for meals onboard, and you can choose the most inviting taverna in town for either lunch or dinner each day. A wellness coach travels on every cruise to help balance mind and body, with yoga, meditation and hiking on offer. On a seven-night Divine Cyclades cruise you’ll sail from Athens and visit islands including Delos, Naxos, Milos, Serifos and Kythnos, as well as big-hitters such as Santorini and Ios. Details Seven nights’ half-board from £2,530pp, departing on September 7 (elixir.cruises). Fly to Athens

Travel + Leisure’s 2024 It List.

Since 1971, Travel + Leisure editors have followed one mission: to inform, inspire, and guide travelers to have deeper, more meaningful experiences. T+L's editors have traveled to countries all over the world, having flown, sailed, road tripped, and taken the train countless miles. They've visited small towns and big cities, hidden gems and popular destinations, beaches and mountains, and everything in between. With a breadth of knowledge about destinations around the globe, air travel, cruises, hotels, food and drinks, outdoor adventure, and more, they are able to take their real-world experience and provide readers with tried-and-tested trip ideas, in-depth intel, and inspiration at every point of a journey.

Elizabeth Rhodes/Travel + Leisure

For the first time, we’re spotlighting new cruise ships on Travel + Leisure ’s It List, as these exceptional vessels become more and more like floating resorts — celebrity chefs, crystal chandeliers, and Rolex boutiques included.

Explora Journeys’ Explora I

Paul Brady/Travel + Leisure

It’s not every day a new cruise line arrives. The debut of the remarkable Explora I was a moment years in the making for Explora Journeys , the upstart luxury operator that aims to bring a European sensibility to the world of vacations at sea. So far, the project is a smashing success, thanks to the ship’s low-key vibe, standout food and beverage, and intriguing itineraries that visit in-demand ports in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. My own August 2023 trip on Explora I , from Copenhagen to Hamburg, Germany, included fulfilling visits to places such as Oslo and the town of Stavanger, Norway, a gateway to adventurous hiking with a postcard-perfect Old Town. The ship itself was also a destination, with its abundance of outdoor space — including an alfresco fitness center — and pools at seemingly every turn. The 461 suites, all of them with balconies, are filled with luxurious touches such as Frette linens and robes, heated marble floors, and Dyson hair dryers. But Explora I truly shines when it comes to food: During the week I was aboard, it was impossible to find a bad meal — and I was often astonished at the quality of, in particular, the pasta served in the Emporium Marketplace and the sushi on offer at Sakura, two of the nine restaurants aboard. The most ambitious of them all is Anthology, a rotating-chef concept that has seen a residency from seafood whiz Mario Ulaissi, known for his Michelin three-starred restaurant on Italy's Adriatic coast, and that recently welcomed Emma Bengtsson, from Aquavit , in New York City. Much has been made of Explora I ’s Rolex boutique — the first on any cruise ship — but for my money, the other shops on board were more interesting: The company has tapped family-owned businesses around the world to create capsule collections of resort wear, handbags, fragrances, sunglasses, and beautiful gifts that can’t be found elsewhere. From $2,050 per person for a six-day sailing. Accessible ship. — Paul Brady

Oceania Cruises’ Vista

Nick Tortajada/Courtesy of Oceania Cruises

The new Oceania Vista is in a class of its own; no really, it’s the first in Oceania Cruises ’ new Allura class. Of its 11 bars and restaurants, three are entirely new to the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings–owned brand — including a high-end cocktail spot called Founders’ Bar, serving 26 intricate drinks that use house-made syrups and top-shelf booze like Whistle Pig and parsley-infused Grey Goose. As Oceania levels up, the cruise line has produced a ship that feels more like a floating resort than the vessels that came before. There’s pickleball; a health-conscious restaurant, Aquamar, serving made-to-order salads and pressed juices; and a coffee shop that looks like one in walking distance of my home in L.A. (marble counters, gold accents, leather bar stools) and pulls an espresso shot of similar quality. Vista has more suites than others in the Oceania fleet, too: There are 14 Oceania Suites (up to 1,200 square feet); eight Vista Suites (up to 1,850 square feet); and three Owner’s Suites with Ralph Lauren Home decor and two massive terraces (2,400 square feet). But the most hotel-like touch? A celebrity chef–driven restaurant, Toscana, where Giada De Laurentiis — the ship’s godmother — supplied two recipes for the menu. As someone who watched a lot of Everyday Italian in the early aughts, I was particularly excited to try her signature, Capri-inspired lemon spaghetti, and lemon-cream sauce with grilled shrimp and capers didn’t disappoint. From $2,499 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur

Courtesy of Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ sixth ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur , sailed its inaugural season in December, joining sibling ships Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor as the newest member of the luxury fleet. The cruise line is a favorite among T+L readers for its gorgeous ships and all-inclusive pricing that covers unlimited shore excursions, dining at specialty restaurants, and even round-trip airfare. Grandeur lives up to its name thanks to stunning, art-filled spaces designed by cruise ship interior experts Studio Dado: signature restaurant Compass Rose is enchanting with interiors inspired by a fairy-tale forest; the Observation Lounge sparkles with an undulating chandelier and swanky bar; and the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite has a private en suite spa and custom Treesse mini pool. As I boarded Grandeur for the ship’s inaugural sailing, I was mesmerized by the grand staircase and glittering chandelier. And with a maximum capacity of 744 guests, I found it easy to take time to myself in the myriad of quiet spots tucked throughout the ship, whether in the Serene Spa and Wellness area, in the Library, or on the Sports Deck overlooking the ocean. Seven restaurants include specialty steakhouse Prime 7, pan-Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, and breakfast and lunch buffet La Veranda, which refines the cruise buffet experience with daily specials like paella and sushi. Several bars and lounges, a pool and hot tubs, a casino, Broadway-style productions, and cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Kitchen make the ship a destination in itself, though guests will want to take advantage of those included excursions on Caribbean, Central American, North American, and European itineraries, ranging from seven to 16 nights, during the ship’s 2024 season. From $4,669 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Elizabeth Rhodes

Silversea’s Silver Nova

Courtesy of Silversea Cruises

Carrying 728 passengers, Silver Nova is big for the luxury sector, but boasts a hugely important metric: a capacious passenger space ratio — that is, the number of guests relative to the size of the ship. Simply put, this ship offers more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel. Silver Nova is wrapped in glass, with an asymmetrical layout; the funnel is positioned off-center, so is the pool, offering an expansive, uncluttered pool deck. Many features of the brand-new ship recall previous Silversea successes, my favorite of which is the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, expanded for Silver Nova . S.A.L.T. perks include a gorgeous, sea-facing lab for hands-on culinary lessons (at no additional cost), plus a new concept, the Chef’s Table, where an 11-course menu is prepared for just 24 diners. All facets of the S.A.L.T. ecosystem, including ingredients, a bar, lectures, and shore excursions, are keyed to the region Nova is sailing. While food is a drawing card for Silver Nova , accommodations also received a revamp. Tied to the theme of bringing the outside in, there are brilliant new suites found in the aft starboard corner of the ship, with wraparound balconies revealing a 270-degree view.  This is where you can tuck me in when I win the lottery and head off on a world cruise. But until then, Silver Nova will summer in Alaska and spend northern hemisphere winters in Australia and New Zealand, places where top-deck views should prove ceaselessly rewarding. From $3,250 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — David Swanson
