Each photo leader has years of experience in photographic education, and each has his or her own philosophy and style. New Zealand: South Island Encompassed

Worth the price, great itinerary, Summer was an excellent guide. Breakfast could have been a bit more "colourful", but still did it. Regrettably weather is out of anyone's hand, but Summer made sure, that we have alternative options and activities. Would recommend.

An absolutely amazing experience with the best group leader. We faced quite a few challenges during the South Island tour due to extreme weather, but Emily always went above and beyond to make sure we’d all still have the best experience possible. No matter what was thrown at us Emily was there to reassure us, adapt & improvise and make us laugh

Queenstown Southern Loop Tour

Queenstown Southern Loop

Although Rod, the driver was very nice I felt that Intrepid had not organised the tour as well as previous Intrepid tours I have done. It was very overpriced for what was provided. The van had a broken seat belt attachment with a sharp edge which ruined a down jacket I had bought for the trip. I have asked Intrepid about it but received no reply.

New Zealand Journey National Geographic Journeys Tour

New Zealand Journey National Geographic Journeys

This was an excellent tour with a very knowledgeable guide (Jonno). We only had 6 people on the tour which allowed us to get to know each other very well over the 12 day tour. The tour bus was very clean and our driver/guide kept us entertained during the entire trip. All transportation (bus, flight, train & boat) were well coordinated and we never felt rushed. Our guide always made good suggestions for lunch and dinner and we often ate together as a group. Overall a good experience that I would highly recommend for anyone wanting to see the most of both North and South islands over a 2 weeks period.

South Island Lick Tour Tour

South Island Lick Tour

It was a well organized tour.I did not feel rushed. We visited the most scenic parts of South Island. The Tour Leader, Daniel was a very good Tour Leader looking after everybody and making sure everyone doesn’t miss the optional excursions . He worked hard , driving long distance and showing us places in the itinerary. He was good to me especially when I had the colds, in Franz Joseph he made kiwi tea for me 2x. He was also kind enough to offer his room so I can rest well, and not to spread the virus to others with no additional charge . Being a solo traveller and at 60 years old, I was not left out. In fact I felt everybody was looking after me.. It was a good group and the Tour is unforgettable .

Himanshu the representative was very Cooperative and answered all our queries. Though the group was maximum to 15 people there were some trips where we were around 50 people in the trip. We had paid for a private trip where maximum size was 15 people and hence that was disappointing. Overall the trip was good.

Excellent tour. Definitely recommend
One of the best experiences of my life, made possible by the incredibly talented and charismatic Daisy! This was well organized with all of the logistics taken care of for you while having the freedom to pick what activities interest you most. The group setting was fun and a nice bonding expensive of people from around the world. Some of the hostel stays were great, some were just ok, but all were clean and had the essentials.
Great tour! We got to see so many places in such a short amount of time, and I had a great time. Made some friends during the whole time! Will be heading to see the North Island next year! I’m already looking forward to exploring! ??

New Zealand South Island Glaciers and Fjords Photo Tour August 31 - September 13, 2022

August 31 - September 13, 2022 14 days / 13 nights

New Zealand. Aotearoa. Land of the long white cloud. No matter what you call it, New Zealand will leave you speechless with the beauty of its mystical fjords, pristine beaches, and glacier-carved mountains. Join five other adventurous photographers on the trip of a lifetime through the dramatic landscapes of New Zealand’s South Island. From the stunning grandeur of Milford Sound and the soaring peaks of Aoraki National Park to the unreal blues of Lakes Pukaki and Wanaka, this 14-day New Zealand Photography Tour will provide photographic opportunities on an epic scale. The photography will be incredible, the scenery breathtaking, and the memories will last a lifetime.

What’s new for this tour:

On our last New Zealand Photography Tour we added an overnight cruise through Doubtful Sound, one of the most remote and wild places in the world. This rare and unique experience was a lifetime highlight for many of our participants, and more than a few of us were crying with joy at the beauty of this special place.

But I began to think, how can we make our next NZ trip even better??? And the answer was really simple: why drive to Milford Sound when we can FLY THERE! That’s right, we’ve added another scenic flight that takes you over the most beautiful terrain in the world on the way to Milford Sound.

That means this trip includes two scenic flights, two stunning boat cruises, wine tasting, and more cute baby sheep than you can count. Plus, we’ve included every single breakfast during the tour (amazing ones at that), even cooler accommodation (our first night we will be staying at New Zealand’s only castle), and a few other fun surprises.

On top of all of that we’re also doing more for conservation this year. We’re donating a portion of the trip proceeds to two environmental causes: The first, Give Back Nature, plants trees. And we fund enough tree planting to ensure the trip is not just carbon neutral, but actually carbon negative. Second, we are funding efforts to remove a highly invasive weed from Fiordland’s waterways, helping keep New Zealand’s wildest corner as pristine as it’s meant to be.

So join us for 14 days, 13 nights of incredible photography, delicious food, and fantastic company.

Josh Cripps – Lead Guide and Chief Sand Fly Squisher

Josh has been visiting New Zealand since 1998 and cumulatively has spent over a year of his life traveling through, exploring, and photographing this amazing island nation. He even lived for a short time in the far north town of Kaitaia. He’s been chased by seals at Arnott Point, eaten the best whitebait sandwich in the country, and explored ice caves in the west coast glaciers. Josh thinks New Zealand’s South Island is quite possible the most beautiful chunk of land on the planet and relishes every minute he spends there.

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

south island tours nz photos

Part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, Fiordland National Park comprises over 4,800 square miles of glacier-carved fjords and sounds, deep river valleys, and rugged peaks. One of the high points of Fiordland, Milford Sound, has been called the 8th wonder of the world. From a deep, tranquil bay Mitre Peak rises straight up over a mile high to present a truly breathtaking view. Abundant precipitation and sheer-walled mountains create two powerful year-round waterfalls and hundreds of ephemeral ones.

south island tours nz photos

Aoraki / Mt Cook National Park

An instructor favorite location, Mt. Cook / Aoraki National Park showcases beautifully braided rivers, iceberg-dotted lakes, and more than 70 named glaciers, including the Tasman Glacier, the country’s longest. It’s also home to New Zealand’s highest peak, Aoraki Mt. Cook, which rises nearly two vertical miles from the surrounding plains. But for all its ruggedness, Mt. Cook National Park is highly accessible, and a few short tramps will put us in position for prime photography.

south island tours nz photos

Queenstown and Wanaka

Near Queenstown we will find glacial valleys, vast lakes, and steep mountains. Here the opportunities for breathtaking photography are limitless.

Wanaka is a land of rolling hills, pastures, and idyllic scenes. Not to mention an enormous, gorgeous lake, alongside access to tremendous scenery in Mt. Aspiring National Park.

south island tours nz photos

Otago Peninsula & Moeraki Boulders

We start our trip on the east coast of the South Island, at Larnach Castle on the Otago Peninsula. This peninsula is a land of endless rolling hills and pastures.

Just an hour north you’ll find the supremely cool Moeraki Boulders: gigantic spheres of rock that litter a stunning, reflective beach.

2 Scenic Flights

On this trip you will enjoy two spectacular scenic flights. The first takes us around the Southern Alps, encircling the two highest peaks in New Zealand, and landing on New Zealand’s longest glacier.

Our second flight will take us from Queenstown over Lake Wakatipu, and into Fiordland National Park. There’s no more impressive way to experience the grandeur of this wild landscape.

Deep Water Fjord Excursions

The climax of the trip is surely the last three days. We start with a short boat cruise through Milford Sound, taking in thundering waterfalls and towering cliffs.

Then we move on to Doubtful Sound, where we spend two nights aboard the Fiordland Navigator, wandering through this mystical corner of New Zealand.

THE TOUR EXPERIENCE

south island tours nz photos

Who is this Photo Tour for?

This New Zealand South Island photo tour is for upbeat, adventurous photographers who appreciate a wide array of landscapes and scenes. If you love intimate details of ferns as much as grand landscapes, then this trip is for you. There is a wonderful range of subjects and scales to explore through the South Island of New Zealand, and photographers open to all kinds of different shots will find great joy on this trip. The focus of this trip is glaciers and fjords, so expect to see lots of stunning mountains, rivers, ice flows, lakes, waterfalls, and fjords.

Experience Level

This tour is for photographers of all experience levels, from pros to novices. That being said, you will get the most out of this trip if you understand the basics of exposure and composition.

One of the most important things you can do to prepare is to know your camera. Understand how to change the settings, how to zoom in to 100% on Live View and on Playback, and how to quickly access the histogram and menus. When the good light is changing rapidly, simply knowing how to work your gear quickly and efficiently will set you up for success.

Group Dynamics

This is a group trip, and morale is a key factor to everyone’s enjoyment. Our favorite kinds of photographers:

  • – Roll with the punches and go with the flow.
  • – Respect people from different backgrounds and different styles of shooting.
  • – Can laugh when Mother Nature throws a monkey wrench into the plan.
  • – Look for reasons to be excited about the landscape, regardless of the light or conditions. New Zealand is a world-class location for photography, no matter whether it’s totally overcast or blazing blue skies. Photographers who are fixated on “epic light and clouds” are going to miss out on a lot of beauty. So be open to the opportunities in each moment.

If this describes you, we’d love to have you aboard this tour. Negative, complain-y, or high-maintenance “everything needs to be my way” photographers need not apply.

In short, this tour is for anyone who wants to explore and photograph stunning scenery with a fun group of like-minded people. The trip is limited to 6 participants for a small, personal feel.

About New Zealand’s South Island

Photographers will find NZ’s South Island to be a land of stunning beauty and wonderful photographic opportunities. The landscapes are dramatic, varied, and accessible.  We will photograph marvelous glaciers, soaring snow-capped peaks, breathtaking fjords, lush rain forests, and rugged coastlines .  On top of the scenery itself, the light in New Zealand is truly mesmerizing. The weather in New Zealand is constantly changing, and interacting with the country’s unique geology in a way that produces absolutely beautiful conditions. While this is not a guarantee of anything, I will say that I’ve seen more double rainbows in New Zealand than everywhere else in the world put together. 🙂

In addition to the photography, you will find New Zealand to be a charming country that’s easy to explore. The Kiwis are an extremely friendly people who are in love with their wonderful land. Prepare yourself for incredible scenery, stunning photos, and memorable experiences with our New Zealand photography tour.

Fitness and Physicality: Low-Moderate, 4/10

This New Zealand photo tour is appropriate for photographers of most fitness levels. You should have good balance and mobility. Hiking is minimal, perhaps only 1-2 miles total each day. However, in Aoraki / Mt Cook National Park you should expect walks of up to 30-45 minutes (with +/- 500 feet elevation change) each way to reach certain shooting locations.

Walking in the mountains can be strenuous at elevation and we recommend preparing for the trip by walking at least a few miles per week leading up to the tour. All participants are expected to carry their own camera, personal gear, and water during the tour.

The average age of our past participants is 50 – 70 years old.

What’s the difference between a photo tour and a workshop?

This is a photo tour, meaning that we are focused on getting you to the right places at the right times to create amazing images. We don’t have any boring lectures, and we don’t force you to learn the latest complicated processing techniques. This trip is about having the best possible experience in New Zealand’s stunning South Island. That means in addition to shooting we are also enjoying meals together, learning the history of these areas, and allowing for down time so that you can stay rested and excited. We set a relaxed pace during the tour so that you will enjoy each day, rather than feeling exhausted, burned out, or mentally fatigued. This trip is FUN, not boot camp.

We are here to help, without overwhelming you.

In the field Josh is always available to answer questions, provide guidance and feedback, and give you ideas of how to approach your photography. In short, if you have questions I’m here for you. At the same time, it’s important to avoid spending every field session cramming your brain full of as much photography knowledge as possible, as this only leads to overwhelm and an inability to retain anything.

Josh will also be shooting photos during the trip, both to provide examples and ideas, and so that you can see the scene through his eyes, get inspiration, and learn about his approaches to photography.

ITINERARY AND LOGISTICS

Tour itinerary*.

Our itinerary is organized to visit some of the most spectacular locations on the South Island. The tour is 14 days total: 12 shooting days bookended by an arrival day and a departure day. We’ll set a relaxed pace on the trip, with emphasis on shoots during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset, with breaks in the middle of day for meals, optional side-trips, or transit between hotels. NZ is a small country and most of our hotel locations are a 3-4 hour drive apart.

Day 1, Arrival Day. August 31st.

Arrive in Dunedin. Meet at the Larnach Castle for orientation, introductions, a relaxed evening shoot, and a delicious kick-off dinner prepared by the castle chef.

Days 2 – 13. September 1 – September 12.

Our tour follows a rough counterclockwise loop out of Dunedin, first heading up to the iconic Moeraki Boulders for a sunset and sunrise. Next we’ll set off for three nights at Mt. Cook National Park, where rugged mountains and milky-blue lakes dominate the landscape. We’ll enjoy glacier-sculpted scenery from easy hikes in the park as well as our own, private flight-seeing tour and glacier landing.

Next we will venture to Wanaka for two nights to enjoy the incredible scenery and hospitality of Wanaka and the Matukituki Valley. Sheep, wineries, elegant trees, delicious food, and massive lakes are on the itinerary for this stop.  We will have a planned rest day in Wanaka.  Then it’s a short drive to our next location of Queenstown, where we are staying for 2 nights. This hip city is in one of the most beautiful locations in New Zealand, with towering peaks, glacial valleys, picturesque lakes, and other secret finds within easy access.

After Queenstown we’ll enjoy an epic scenic flight into one of the most incredible parts of New Zealand: Fiordland National Park and Milford Sound. There we will spend two nights drinking in the spectacular scenery of New Zealand’s largest national park, both by land and by a cruise through majestic Milford Sound. Then we’ll head to Manapouri for our 2-night journey into Doubtful Sound, an experience that will leave you breathless.

Day 14, Last Day and Departure.  September 13th .

On our last day we finish our Doubtful Sound cruise by noon, then return to Dunedin between 5 and 7 pm. Hotel this night is not included. We recommend planning your flight for the next day. Bid your new friends and fellow photographers goodbye and reminisce about an awesome tour.

*all times and dates in this itinerary are given for New Zealand in September, which will be GMT+12. When making flight bookings, please make sure the date you arrive in Dunedin coincides with our itinerary. We reserve the right to revise this itinerary at any time. For detailed trip information please contact me.

Getting to the tour

This New Zealand photography tour meets and disbands in Dunedin, the second-largest city on New Zealand’s South Island. Participants are responsible for their flights to and from the Dunedin Airport, the local transfer to our first hotel, and the local transfer back to the airport once the tour has finished. If you are staying in Dunedin prior to the tour, we will arrange pickup to get you to Larnach Castle, our kickoff point.

Transportation during the tour

Transportation is provided throughout the tour, from our first hotel until our return to Dunedin. Transportation during the tour will be in a comfortable, private coach capable of holding the entire group plus our photo gear and luggage. Everyone will have two seats for themselves: one for you, and one for your camera bag.

The tour includes 13 nights of high-end hotel lodging throughout the South Island. By default everyone has their own room during the tour (with the exception of the Doubtful Sound cruise where we double up due to space constraints). Double occupancy may be available for a slightly reduced price.

Wi-Fi  and Cell Coverage

Wi-Fi, while widely available, is slower than in many Westernized countries. We will generally have access to Wi-Fi at our hotels but expect that it may not be available everywhere. In Fiordland it is basically non-existent. In some places there may be a fee to access the internet.

Cell phone coverage is generally good, except for Fiordland.

EQUIPMENT AND CLOTHING

Camera gear you should bring.

  • – Digital SLR or Mirrorless Camera
  • – Ultra-wide, such as a 14-24mm or 16-35mm

  • – A warm jacket and pants
  • – A windproof rain jacket
  • – A warm hat and gloves
  • – Lighter layers for warm days, like a sun hoodie or long-sleeved sun shirt

Weather and Conditions

September is early spring in NZ and marks the beginning of New Zealand’s transition from winter. Days will be mild and nights may be cold. Kiwis often claim their country can experience all four seasons in a single day, so participants on this tour should be ready for a variety of conditions from rain and snow to warm sun.

Average temperatures at this time range between 35°F lows and 65°F highs (2°C – 18°C). Temperatures throughout the South Island will be relatively similar, with perhaps +/- 10°F (+/- 5°C) differences.

Breathtaking impressions await you on this photo journey on the South Island of New Zealand. You will visit Nelson, the first city founded in New Zealand, and only a few days later you can admire the imposing Franz Josef Glacier. You'll also be able to experience the pleasures of photography in Wanaka and Milford Sound, where New Zealand's nature showcases its beauty.

Before we leave the northern island to head south, we will visit New Zealand's National Museum Te Papa. In the early afternoon we will then take the Interislander ferry for the short transfer to Picton. From Picton we will travel along Tasman Bay directly to Nelson, New Zealand's first city ever. By the way the area around Nelson has the highest amount of sunshine hours in New Zealand and will give you lots of photo opportunities.

Day 3: Nelson

As a day tour, we will today undertake an excursion to the Abel Tasman National Park where we will be dropped off per water taxi at the beach and after a walk in the free wilderness simply be picked up again.

Day 4: Nelson > Greymouth

Pancake Rocks, New Zealand

Our photo tour adventure leads us southwest along the famous Buller Gorge Road to Cape Foulwind and south to the Pancake Rocks. Here we will get a close up view of the blowholes with the spraying seawater. We will spend the night in the coastal city Greymouth, once an important Maori settlement.

Day 5: Greymouth > Franz Josef

New Zealand, Franz Josef Helicopter Flight

We will visit a Jade Factory for souvenirs, pass the old gold mining town Ross and enjoy the all uniting landscape with imposing mountains, green rain forest and the Tasman Sea to the right. In Franz Josef we will set up our sleeping quarters below the Franz Josef Glacier. Depending on the weather, there is the possibility for a helicopter flight with a landing on the famous glacier or weather independent to take a breathtaking quad tour in the rain forest.

Day 6: Franz Josef

Franz Josef Glacier, New Zealand

Explore the Franz Josef Glacier on your own and take an optional hiking tour - this day is at your own disposal.

Day 7: Franz Josef > Queenstown

TSS Earnslaw, Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown, New Zealand

Passing the Fox Glacier we will leave the Tasman Sea, cross the Haast Pass and reach Wanaka. A lonely mountain road leads us to the most exciting city of New Zealand, to Queenstown. After a breathtaking passage on the Lake Wakatipu we will have dinner in the Colonel's Homestead restaurant of the Walter Peak High Country Sheep farm and with a farm tour get a picture of the work on a New Zealand farm. The TSS Earnslaw, the oldest coal fueled steam ship of New Zealand, brings us afterwards back again to Queenstown.

Day 8: Queenstown

Bungee Jumping, Kawarau Bridge, New Zealand

There is action and sights to see: Starting with the popular bungee jumping off the historic Kawarau Bridge, up to para sailing and jet boat riding. Of course you can also spend your time with an abundant shopping tour in Queenstown or just relax - this day is at your own disposal.

Day 9: Queenstown > Te Anau

New Zealand, Queenstown Gardens

Your photo tour continues on by spending the morning in lovely Queenstown and heading to Te Anau in the early afternoon.

Day 10: Te Anau

Milford Sound, New Zealand

Today a world wonder is on the photo program, one of the most famous symbols of New Zealand: the Milford Sound in the rain-laden zone of New Zealand. Here we will take a cruise on the 16 kilometer long fjord to the Tasman Sea and at the same time take amazing photographs from penguins, sea lions, dolphins, sometimes even whales, as well as the most spectacular waterfalls in New Zealand.

Day 11: Te Anau > Invercargill

New Zealand, Southland

Later in the morning we will continue our adventure to Invercargill, the southernmost city of New Zealand and the heart of the Southland.

Day 12: Invercargill

New Zealand, Stewart Island

Our day trip leads us to Stewart Island in the far south of New Zealand. Here we can observe in untouched nature i.e. rare bird species and take a boats tour for a spectacular underwater world.

Day 13: Invercargill > Dunedin

New Zealand, Nugget Point Lighthouse

Surely most of you have heard of the cult film 'The World's Fastest Indian' with Anthony Hopkins. We will have a close up view of Burt Monro's original motorcycle today. Afterwards we head through the Catlins on to Dunedin. Several photo stops like the famous Nugget Point Lighthouse are on our way.

Day 14: Dunedin

Albatross, Stewart Island, New Zealand

Dunedin's Royal Albatross Colony in the Otago Peninsula will be today's highlight with onsite albatross and penguin viewing as well as a historical tour of Tairoa Head. Prepare your cameras for many photos and videos!

Day 15: Dunedin > Mount Cook

New Zealand, Mount Cook

Our destination for today is Mount Cook, more than 3800 meters high and the highest mountain in New Zealand. We will take a photo tour and, if possible, stay the night at the legendary Hermitage Hotel below the mountain.

Day 16: Mount Cook > Christchurch

New Zealand, Church of the Good Shephard

The inland route to Christchurch leads us to the 'Church of the Good Shepherd' located on the shores of Lake Tekapo. The church is arguably one of the most photographed in New Zealand, and features an altar window that frames stunning views of the lake and mountains.

Day 17: Christchurch

New Zealand, Akaroa

Today we will learn more about the French influence in New Zealand by taking a day trip to the village Akaroa, set on a beautiful sheltered harbour and overlooked by craggy volcanic hills.

Day 18: Christchurch > Kaikoura

New Zealand, Whale Watching Kaikoura

Depending on the weather, we will join a whale watching tour. Our destination is Kaikoura, the most famous place for whale watching and photo shooting in New Zealand.

Day 19: Kaikoura > Blenheim

New Zealand Marlborough Winery

While travelling back north, we have an overnight stay in Blenheim, the centre of New Zealand's wine industry and located in the Marlborough Region in the north of the South Island of New Zealand. Of course we will have a wine tasting tour.

Day 20: Blenheim > Wellington

New Zealand, Queen Charlotte Sound

On our last day we take the famous ferry ride via Interislander through the Queen Charlotte Sound and pass the Cook Straight between the islands. LAKE TEKAPO TO OAMARU

Today we’ll spend the morning in Lake Tekapo before departing this afternoon to travel back towards the Pacific coast. We'll camp in the historic town of Oamaru this evening, close to the unique Moeraki Boulders and the Scottish city of Dunedin. Go for a walk this evening to a great view point offering expansive views of the Pacific Ocean and try to spot a little Blue Penguin along the shore.

  • Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
  • Bike Rides: 13 km Alps2Ocean trail ride
  • Walks and Hikes: Explore the Moeraki Heritage Trail

OAMARU TO TE ANAU

If the tide is low this morning, we’ll go for a walk along the beach to see the mysterious Moeraki boulders. These perfectly round spheres of rock have formed over millions of years and have found their way onto the beach near Moeraki and make for some fun photo opportunities.

Next it’s onto the historic Scottish city of Dunedin, the South Island's second-largest city and home to NZ’s only castle. Dunedin is home to the world’s steepest residential street and the coastline is home to some fantastic and rare wildlife. Afterwards, we’ll continue down to the gateway to the Milford Sound, situated on the edge of Lake Te Anau.  Tonight’s camp is on the lakeside in Te Anau, which is the South Island's largest lake.  The bikers can go for a ride on the lake to lake Te Anau trail and the rest of us can enjoy a leisurely walk along the lakefront or head up to the Te Anau Bird Sanctuary where we can see the endangered native Takahē. If you’d like to do an activity, we recommend the incredible glowworm caves tour and boat ride.

  • Bike Rides: Lake Te Anau Lakefront Cycle Upukerora Trail (5km+)
  • Walks and Hikes: World’s steepest street, explore Dunedin city
  • Optional Activities: Te Anau glowworm caves tour & boat ride

FIORDLAND NATIONAL PARK

Today we’ll travel along one of the world’s most scenic roads and into Milford Sound! Described as the 'eighth wonder of the world', Milford Sound was carved by glaciers during the ice ages. We highly recommend boarding a cruise, where you'll see dramatic waterfalls and snow-capped peaks and if you’re lucky, some wildlife! At different times of year, penguins, dolphins, seals and even whales have been spotted at Milford. As it’s just the one road in and out, we head back along the same breath-taking route to our lakeside camp in Te Anau. Along the way, we drop off those doing the Routeburn Track, one of New Zealand’s 9 Great Walks. This hike is a haven for native birdlife. Charge up your camera as this hike offers everything from mountainous peaks and sheer rock faces to pristine lakes, cascading waterfalls and dense, luxuriant forest.

  • Bike Rides: Lake to Lake Te Anau trail, Lakefront Upukerora trail (5 km+)
  • Walks and Hikes: Plenty of short walks from camp
  • Optional Activities: Milford Sound Cruise, Te Anau glowworm caves tour & boat ride

TE ANAU TO QUEENSTOWN

After a chance for a morning bike ride on the Lake to Lake Trail, if not done already, we will make our way along the Devil’s Staircase, and catch our first glimpses of Queenstown.  The Adventure Capital of NZ,  Queenstown is located on the shores of the South Islands second largest lake, Lake Wakatipu.  There are many cycle trails & walks for everyone to enjoy.

  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Walks and Hikes: Routeburn Track (must be pre-booked and hikers will rejoin the group in Queenstown)
  • Optional Activities: Bungy jumping, skydiving, horse-riding, white water rafting, jet boating & the list goes on! You are in the adventure capital of the world!
  • Drive Distance: No Driving today

With so much to do we’ll spend another full day in the fantastic Queenstown, so everyone has the opportunity to have those once in a lifetime experiences. Speaking of experiences, may we suggest trying the legendary Fergburger! Tonight, we dine out at one of Queenstown’s many delicious eateries - a great chance for your group to enjoy a feast at an iconic Queenstown eatery (own cost).

  • Bike Rides: Lake Wakatipu trail (16km), Queenstown trail (48 km)
  • Walks and Hikes: Queenstown walks, Ben Lomond
  • Optional Activities: Bungy jumping, skydiving, horse-riding, white water rafting, jet boating & the list goes on!

How do I get to the South Island?

The two major airports on New Zealand's South Island are Christchurch and Queenstown.

Flying into Christchurch is generally cheaper than flying into Queenstown, especially during ski season.

Vehicle ferry services, which also take foot passengers, travel between Wellington in the North Island and Picton at the tip of the South Island daily and take around three-and-a-half hours.

Getting around the South Island

Most people hire a car or a motorhome or book a New Zealand tour to travel around the South Island of New Zealand.

InterCity buses are also available for long distance travel to the major towns in the South Island.

When is the best time to visit the South Island?

If you would like to go skiing, the best time to visit the South Island is from late June to early September.

Visiting outside the school holidays is the best option if you aren't travelling with school-age children as New Zealand's South Island is popular for family holidays and gets busy during these times.

Summer is pleasantly warm with low humidity and days that are generally clear and sunny.

Winter sees snow on the mountains and in the middle of the South Island. Some inland roads can be closed due to snow, so plan your journey accordingly.

Spring sees fewer crowds and is ideal for hiking and outdoor pursuits.

What should I pack for the South Island?

The weather in the South Island can be changeable so pack clothes you can layer plus a jumper or jacket, wet weather gear, a hat and a beanie.

Even if you are visiting in winter, a pair of shorts and a t-shirt is a good idea if you are planning on going hiking as it can be get surprisingly warm in the middle of the day during the cooler months.

What should I wear in the South Island?

The South Island of New Zealand is a fairly casual place although locals do tend to dress up if they are 'hitting the town' at night in major towns like Queenstown or Christchurch.

Smart casual is the norm at most restaurants, aside from the signature 'date night' ones where people tend to dress up more.

What is the internet access like in the South Island?

There is good WiFi coverage in major towns and tourist centres in the South Island of New Zealand but it is not uncommon to lose coverage in some situations such as when you are driving through mountains or hiking in remote areas.

Can I use my mobile/cell phone in the South Island?

There is good mobile coverage in major towns and tourist centres in the South Island of New Zealand but it is not uncommon to lose coverage in some situations such as when you are driving through mountains or hiking in remote areas.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

18 Most Photogenic Places on The South Island of New Zealand

Moeraki Boulders 5

It’s difficult not to fall in love with New Zealand, especially for a nature lover like me. When it comes down to landscapes I have never seen so much diversity in such a small country.  It’s a perfect spot for photography lovers!

After living in Queenstown, I finally decided to leave what the locals call the Queenstown bubble and go on a road trip around the south island. A road trip that took me right back to Queenstown.

During the 6 weeks, I was on the road I wanted to capture the most dramatic landscapes of the south island of New Zealand. Landscapes that make you want to gasp for air.

I have put together a  road trip plan for photographers on New Zealand’s South Island  to make your planning easier if you want to visit most of the spots enlisted below.

1. Moeraki Boulders

Best photography spots on the South Island of New Zealand

The  Moeraki Boulders  are one of the highlights of the  east coast . These spheres started to form over 60 million years ago at the bottom of the ocean.

The  best time to photograph  them is  in the morning  as the beach faces east toward the sunrise.

Tidal times are really important too as the boulders could be half-submerged and unreachable or completely devoid of water.

2. St Clairs Beach – Dunedin

Saint Claires Beach Dunedin 1

A  nice beach stroll  with views like this!!! Who could say no? For the best light, make sure you  go there at sunrise and check the tide!

It’s a short  10-minute drive from Dunedin ‘s city centre and a short 5-minute walk from the closest parking spot.

3. Purakaunui Waterfalls

Purakaunui Waterfall Catlins 2

One of many  great waterfalls in the Catlins region  near the southern tip of the south island. Purakaunui Falls is a  15-minute walk along a well-maintained boardwalk.

The nearby  McLean Falls are a 20-minute walk away from their respective car park and are also worth visiting. They are a 30-minute drive apart from each other.

4. Church of the Good Shepherd

Church of the good Shephers at night 1

The list wouldn’t be complete without at least one Astro shot from this gem. A must-see for every astrophotography enthusiast!  This little chapel is placed right among the  international dark sky reserve in Tekapo.

One of the stops on my  one-week road itinerary around the South Island of New Zealand.  For the best results make sure to have  the least cloud coverage and the lowest moon luminance.  Parking is available directly at the church.

5. St. Peter’s Lookout – Lake Pukaki

Lake Pukaki Mount Cook National Park 5

A roadside pulls off on the  road to Mount Cook , one of  several amazing drives in New Zealand . Peter’s Lookout showcases the  winding road , New Zealand’s tallest mountain Mount Cook and the crystal clear  icy blue water of Lake Pukaki.

6. Lupin Flowers in Tekapo

Lake Tekapo Lupin Flowers

Once a year at the start of summer usually  starting in late November, lupin flowers bloom for around 6 weeks.  They are commonly found along the  shoreline of Lake Tekapo, Lake Wanaka, Lake Pukaki, the Lindis Pass and the Ahuriri River.

7. Wharariki Beach

Wharariki Beach 4

Close to the  northern tip of the south island , Wharariki (read: Fara:riki) beach at sunset is the perfect end to a day’s picnic. The view from the beach towards the rocks looks west.

With a bit of luck, you might  spot some seal pups hanging around  the place too.

To get there it’s a 1km walk from the car park which meanders through rolling hills before eventually emerging out on the beach where the vista of the Archway Islands is right in your face.

8. Hooker Glacier Lake

Winter Mount Cook National Park 13

The  glacial lake at the foot of Mount Cook  is stunning at all times of the year. The carving of the  Hooker Glacier creates icebergs  that float toward the south end of the lake, they make for very interesting foreground subjects.

It’s a  10km return hike  to this lake which crosses 3 scenic suspension bridges. It’s a great  hike on the South Island.  Sunset is the best time to get golden, orange and sometimes vibrant pink light on the southwestern face of Mount Cook.

9. Roy’s Peak

Roys Peak Lake Wanaka 7

This is an  iconic viewpoint overlooking Lake Wanaka,  The undulating ridge like on the Roys Peak hike has become very popular and queuing up is not uncommon to take this photo. To get there it’s a  2-3 hour steady uphill hike.

The photograph above however is taken from a slightly different spot called the Coromandel peak. I am afraid this one is only accessible via helicopter.

The two islands in the lake, which you can view from the top are called Mou Tapu and Mou Waho which translate to Holy Island and Outer Island.

If you are not a fan of crowds check out my article about other photography spots in Wanaka .

10. Lake Matheson

Lake Matheson 2

Another vantage point of New Zealand’s tallest mountain, Lake Matheson offers  reflective panoramas of the western face of Mount Cook.  Its location on the West Coast makes it great to  combine with a trip to Fox or Franz Josef Glaciers.

To get there it’s a 30-minute drive from Franz Josef Village or a 5-minute drive from the town of Fox Glacier.  Once you’re at the trailhead car park, it’s a  20-minute walk  to the photo spot featured above.

11. Milford Sound

Milford Sound Sun Beams

The  most visited tourist attraction in the whole of Oceania . Milford Sound, which by the way is not actually a sound but a fjord, is a place that offers a multitude of different compositions.

Generally, the background is of the Mitre Peak, one of the most prominent peaks in Fiordland National Park but foreground elements often include driftwood, moss-covered rocks, grassland and boardwalks.

It’s a must-do if you’re in New Zealand  and here’s a list of  travel tips with 8 beautiful photos that will inspire you to visit Milford Sound .

12. Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown

Queenstown Sunrise 3

Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding mountain ranges, with the most notable Remarkable and Hector ranges draw in many tourists from around the World. Not only because of how photogenic they are, but because of Queenstown. The town was built right on its shore and today it is known as the adventure capital of New Zealand.

The photo above was taken from the  1-mile car park.  I spent a total of 7 months living in Queenstown and here are my  top photography spots  around here.

13. Bennett’s Bluff on the Glenorchy-Queenstown Road

Glenorchy Road

A viewpoint on one of  the most scenic drives in New Zealand  that connects Queenstown and Glenorchy. The viewpoint overlooks Pig Island, Pigeon Island, Lake Wakatipu and the winding Queenstown-Glenorchy road.

The roadside pull-out, which has space for around 5 cars, is roughly a 30-minute drive away from Queenstown.

Access to this viewpoint is very dangerous whilst driving back from Glenorchy as it’s on the opposite side of the road. Make sure you visit it on the way to Glenorchy.

14. Nugget Point

Nugget Point Lighthouse 3

There are  two photography spots here for the price of one , both Nugget Point Lighthouse and the actual rocky outcrop known as the Nuggets are right next to each other.

On the southern part of the east coast, they are remote but not too far away from the waterfalls in The Caitlins mentioned earlier.

Sunrise is one of the most scenic times  of the day to shoot here but  astrophotography is well sought after here  too. At a certain time of the year, the core of the Milky Way rises directly behind the lighthouse. From the car park, it’s a 25-minute walk  away.

15. Devil’s Punchbowl Waterfall

Devils Punchbowl Waterfall 1

One of the largest waterfalls in New Zealand,  the Devil’s Punchbowl waterfall is 131m high and well worth a visit. Take your rain jacket and expect to get wet if you plan on getting up close and personal.

The path to get here contains several sections of steps and can get wet and boggy.  The walk takes around 30 minutes one way.

16. Okarito, West Coast

Okarito Sunset 4

The pebble beach at Okarito is a quiet, under-appreciated spot for sunset. When the tides roll in over the rocks, shooting longer exposures can create a misty effect.

The beach faces west so is best in the afternoon. It’s a  25-minute drive away from Franz Josef Village.

17. Franz Josef Glacier Valley

Franz Josef Valley 3

Although quickly retreating the  Franz Josef glacier is still spectacular . The river that was formed by the glacier over thousands of years offers a great photographic opportunity both up and downstream.

Another viewpoint is from the Alex Knob hike.  The elevation gain on this hike makes for better photos and the extra effort is obviously worth it.

18. That Wanaka Tree

That Wanaka Tree 8

A symbolic willow tree just off the shoreline of Lake Wanaka is rumoured to be one of the most photographed trees in the world. Both are great at sunrise and sunset, I think sunrise has a slight edge as the mountains in the background showcase the soft first light.

The  best time of the year however is Autumn  when the leaves turn golden. This happens usually around mid to late April. This is widely regarded as the best time to visit  the photography spots around Wanaka . My personal favourite time too!

Have you recently visited New Zealand and have captured some awesome photographs of these spots? Make sure to share them in the comments, along with any questions you may have!

30 Photos From New Zealand That Will Turn You Into an Outdoor Person

Brilliant photos. How did you get such a soft and clear reflection on your Milford sound composition? Went there today and the water was so rough at 10 stops it would only look cloudy. Did you like, do 16 stops or sometbing? Incredible composition and im kicking myself for not finding a private access to there instead of the tour I went with

Hi Ken! Thanks for stopping by and your nice comment about my photographs. To answer your question it was pure luck. This photo was taken in May, when the tide was low (Milford sound is subject to low tides and high tides). There was no wind and the conditions were just perfect. No filter was used to get extend the shutter speed. I hope you get to visit it again. I do highly recommend autumn for photography in New Zealand. I think it’s the best time.

Day 1 – Welcome & Hike Kepler Track

We’ve distilled down the very best experiences on the South Island for our Pure South trip, making sure you don't miss a thing on your New Zealand adventure! And it all starts today!

After meeting your guides and fellow travellers in Queenstown, you’ll embark on your long-awaited New Zealand adventure.

Hike the Kepler Track

The Kepler Track is renowned for its vivid green moss, native beech forest, and stunning mountain ranges. We’ll walk the section from Rainbow Reach up to Moturau Hut. Following the Waiau River through beech forest and wetlands until we emerge out onto the spectacular viewpoint at the lakeside Moturau Hut. Cast your eyes out over beautiful Lake Manapouri, framed against a backdrop of Fiordland peaks. What a way to welcome you to New Zealand! Afterwards, we’ll head to our accommodation in Te Anau for a delicious home-cooked meal and the chance to rest up before tomorrow’s adventures.

Tonight we stay at Matai Lodge*

Day 2 – Cruise Milford Sound & hike the Routeburn Track

It’s time to rise and shine for your first full day of activities. We’ll head straight to Milford Sound for a beautiful morning cruise. After our relaxing morning on the water, it’s time to take on the Routeburn Track to Key Summit before ending the day back at your accommodation in Te Anau.

Cruise Milford Sound

This morning, we’ll head to Milford Sound for our scenic boat trip. Enjoy the crisp, fresh air and feel your everyday anxieties slip away as the tranquillity of the fiord washes over you. Have your cameras ready as you snap reels of photos of cascading waterfalls, towering peaks and native wildlife in action. Eventually, we’ll cruise back to dock to discover Fiordland National Park on foot, with a hike on part of the Routeburn Track.

Hike the Routeburn Track to Key Summit

Once back on dry land, we’ll head deeper in Fiordland’s wilderness for a heart-pumping hike on the world famous Routeburn Track up to Key Summit. A well-formed track leads us through lush beech forest and past tall tree ferns, with velvety mosses blanketing the rich earth underfoot. Native birdsong provides a beautiful soundtrack to our walk and as we climb higher, views of the Darran Mountains and Hollyford Valley stretch out beneath us providing a fitting reward for our efforts. You’ll sleep soundly tonight in your lakefront accommodation in Te Anau.

Tonight we stay at Matai Lodge again*

Bike or Walk Arrowtown Explore Wanaka

1. Arrowtown bike trip guests on bikes

Day 3 – Bike or Walk Arrowtown & Explore Wanaka

Today we leave the rainforests of Fiordland behind and head for the high-country lakes of Central Otago. We’ll take to the trails - either by bike or on foot, it's your choice - to explore Queenstown’s stunning surrounds and the world-class wine-growing region of Gibbston Valley. We then head over the Crown Range to the pretty mountain resort town of Wanaka and gateway to Mt Aspiring National Park, where we’ll spend the night.

Bike or Walk Arrowtown to the Kawarau Bungy Bridge

Welcome to our backyard! Queenstown and the surrounding area is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream, with many purpose-built tracks and trails ideal for hiking, biking or running. As part of your introduction to New Zealand, we’ll travel to the historic Arrowtown, a quaint old gold-mining settlement just a short drive from Queenstown. Today you’ll have the choice of either biking or walking the Arrow River Bridges Trail.

Explore Wanaka

A short but incredibly scenic drive over New Zealand’s highest sealed road at 1022m takes us into Wanaka, a favourite holiday spot for Kiwis. Nestled at the foot of snow-capped mountains, this lakefront town is Queenstown’s more relaxed cousin, although its equal in stunning scenery. It’s a great place to explore on your own for a bit – be sure to try out some of the local delicacies including meat pies, fantastic coffee, uniquely flavoured gelatos and craft beers.

Tonight we stay at Te Wanaka Lodge*

Bike Arrowtown

We’ll get fitted out with bikes before taking to the trail on two wheels. We’ll follow the Kawarau River along a wide trail, riding past homesteads, meadows and mountains out towards the famous Gibbston Valley vineyards and the world’s first commercial bungy bridge.

Hike Arrowtown

If you prefer to walk rather than cycle, we have an equally exciting alternative. You can still experience the beautiful Arrowtown trail that the cyclists do except you can do it on foot! Your driver will pick you up from the stunning Southern Discoveries swing bridge and drive you to the Kawarau bungy bridge to regroup with the rest of the team.

Mt Aspiring National Park Siberia Valley

Pure South Our group exploring Siberia Valley

Day 4 – Scenic flight into Mount Aspiring National Park, Hike & Wilderness Jet boat

Get ready for a real Kiwi backcountry experience - this is the stuff legendary holiday tales are made of! We’ll begin the day with a scenic flight deep into the heart of Mt Aspiring National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. We land in an isolated valley where we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch with views that will knock your socks off. Sufficiently fortified, we’ll hike back down to the river where a jetboat will be waiting to whisk you back to civilisation and your comfortable bed in Wanaka.

Scenic Flight into Mount Aspiring National Park

Today's adventure begins on one of Southern Alps Air’s Cessna bush planes, taking in expansive views of the 355,000ha Mount Aspiring National Park. Look out across winding rivers, virgin beech forest, glaciated valleys, alpine lakes, glaciers and the towering Southern Alps, before landing on the remote Siberia Valley air strip. Once on the ground, we'll head up the valley to a backcountry hut with outrageous views of the surrounding peaks.

Hike Siberia Valley

After a tasty picnic lunch on the deck of the hut, we'll begin our walk along a well-marked track through the thick forest linking the Siberia Valley to the Wilkin Valley wilderness below. Be on the lookout for native birds along the way and the many photo opportunities as you immerse yourself in nature. The track was originally used by Mount Albert Station to take stock into the valley for grazing. The track is 6.8km in length, the first half of which climbs gently 200m in elevation from the airstrip, before heading downhill for the second half of the walk - a total drop in elevation of 470m.

Wilderness Jet Boat Trip

Jet boats were invented in 1954 in New Zealand by Sir William Hamilton for the shallow waters of our braided rivers. Jet boating originally started on the Wilkin River in 1968 transporting venison out of the mountains before hiking and commercial work became more commonplace. On reaching the Wilkin River at Kerin Forks, jet boats will be waiting to take us for a thrilling 30-minute ride down the Wilkin and Makarora Rivers back to the Makarora Village. Get a whole different perspective on this dramatic valley as you watch the landscape rush by and feel the wind in your hair.

Tonight we stay at Te Wanaka Lodge again*

Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park Hike Aspiring National Park

Mt Cook Village

Pure South Our guests heading down from Rocky Mountain

Day 5 – Hike Wanaka & Aoraki/Mount Cook

If you’re feeling energetic this morning, we’ll start the day off with a heart pumping hike up to Rocky Mountain. If you’d prefer a more relaxed start, there’s plenty to do in the town itself, from great coffee and boutique gift shops to a gentle amble along the beach and obligatory photo in front of Wanaka’s ‘giant hand’ sculpture. This afternoon it’s a change of scenery as we make our way to the Mackenzie Country, an area of jaw-dropping beauty, wide-open skies, glacial lakes and distant towering peaks. We’ll spend the next two nights staying at the foot of New Zealand’s highest mountain, Aoraki/Mount Cook.

Hike Diamond Lake and Rocky Mountain Track

We’ll kick the day off with a hike to Diamond Lake to appreciate the sweeping views out over the Southern Alps and Lake Wanaka, before carrying on up the Rocky Mountain trail. It’s a steady climb and one that will no doubt get your heart pumping, but with each passing step, the scenery just gets better and better, making it all worth it at the top.

Tonight we stay in the Aoraki/Mt Cook region*

Aoraki/Mt Cook Your choice

Pure South Aoraki Mt Cook2

Day 6 – Your Choice in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park

Home to not only its namesake, known as “the Cloud Piercer” to Māori looming at 3,724 metres (over 12,000 feet), Aoraki Mount Cook National Park boasts a further 19 peaks topping more than 3,000 metres. These are the mountains where Edmund Hillary honed his skills before becoming the first to successfully summit Mount Everest with Tenzing Norgay in 1953. This incredible outdoor playground is a hiker’s paradise, and you have several experiences to choose from today. Get up close to the icebergs on a glacier boat tour, or even splurge on a heli-hike if you’d like. Check out the many hiking tracks and trails, or simply explore the village at your leisure. Whatever you decide, it’s an incredible place to spend the day.

After a full day of activities, we’ll meet up and return to our accommodation for a tasty meal and a chance to trade stories from the day as well as gaze up at the impressive night sky in this internationally recognised Dark Sky Reserve.

Tonight we stay in the Aoraki/Mt Cook region  again*

Hike to Red Tarns

Offering phenomenal views of Aoraki/Mt Cook and the surrounding mountains the Red Tarns Track is one of Aoraki/Mt Cook's hidden gems. On a calm day, you'll enjoy incredible mirror-like reflections of Aoraki/Mt Cook that will leave a lasting memory of this magical spot.

Walk the Hooker Valley Track

This is one of the South Island’s most popular glacier country trails. Looking down from swing bridges over rushing rivers, you’ll walk a track that leads to an alpine lake complete with icebergs. For those with an interest in New Zealand flora, the Hooker Valley is one of the best places to see Mount Cook lilies in season.

Free time around Mount Cook Village

Today is a great opportunity to explore on your own. Visit the museum and planetarium at the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre. Take some short walks around the area or just soak in the views with a coffee and good book.

Day 6 Optional Add-ons

Below are some of the optional add-ons you can also enjoy:

Glacier heli-hiking

Take a helicopter up to land high on the Tasman, New Zealand’s longest glacier. In the company of an experienced guide, you’ll don crampons to explore the dramatic ice caves of this frozen wonderland. If you book this optional add-on it will replace this morning's hike to Red Tarns, after which you'll rejoin the group for an afternoon on the Hooker Valley Track.

Glacier lake boat tour

Hop aboard a Zodiac boat and set off across the iceberg-filled lake for an up-close encounter with the Tasman Glacier’s terminal face. If you book this scenic boat tour it will replace this morning's hike to Red Tarns, after which you'll rejoin the group for an afternoon on the Hooker Valley Track.

Aoraki/Mt Cook Hike Mt John

7. Guests in the lupins Lake Tekapo

Day 7 – Hike near Lake Tekapo & Explore Akaroa

We’ll start today with a hike through the picturesque Mackenzie Country, we'll climb through forest and tussock until we reach a spectacular view of the surreal turquoise waters of Lake Pukaki. We’ll then make our way to the charming town of Akaroa, a historic French settlement nestled in a quiet harbour, where we’ll spend our final night.

Hike Mt John

This morning we’ll make the steady climb up Mount John though forest and tussock to the observatory at the top. As we walk, we’ll look out over 360-degree views across the impressive Mackenzie Basin flats and surrounding mountains and lakes. After our hike, we’ll check out the famous and much-photographed Church of the Good Shepherd, as well as Tekapo’s statue to the working dog, commissioned in 1968 by local farmers to pay tribute to the role these intelligent canines played in working the land.

Explore Akaroa

Akaroa sits on a quiet harbour surrounded by the remnants of an old volcano and is rich in both Maori and French history. It’s the perfect place to spend our last night of the trip together. We’ll arrive into Akaroa by late afternoon and you’ll have time to explore the township’s colonial architecture and its thriving arts and crafts scene, as well as meet a few of the locals.

Tonight we stay at Akaroa Village Inn*

For trips travelling from October 2024 onwards here we will return to Queenstown. See trip details here .*

Akaroa Dolphin Swimming

Breakfast Lunch

Today we finish the trip in Christchurch

Swim with dolphins in Akaroa on a New Zealand South Island guided tour.jpg

Day 8 – Akaroa Dolphin Swim & Finish in Christchurch

We’ve saved one last ‘only in New Zealand’ adventure for this morning – a chance to get up close to Hector’s dolphins, the smallest and rarest dolphins in the world. Whether you choose to swim with them or watch from the boat, this promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This afternoon we’ll say our farewells in Christchurch, sending you home refreshed and revitalised with incredible stories to tell your friends and family.

Akaroa Dolphin Swim

It’s our last morning together and the adventure isn’t quite over just yet. We’ll board a small well-equipped boat with a specialised guide to experience Akaroa Harbour the abundance of marine life that make their home there. After donning our wetsuits, we’ll take to the water to swim with native Hector’s dolphins, enjoying their playfully curious antics. Akaroa is the only place in the world where you can take a specific trip to swim with them and this adventure is strictly regulated to ensure it doesn’t interfere with the routine and habitat of these incredible creatures.

Finish in Christchurch

This afternoon we finish our adventure in the South Island’s biggest city, Christchurch. It’s only an hour or two from Akaroa to Christchurch so we’ll have you there in plenty of time for your departing flight, or we can drop you at your accommodation if you’d like to spend some time exploring this cosmopolitan and transitional city. The Pure South works perfectly with our Sweet North trip if you’re keen to explore the North Island as well.

*For logistical reasons, we may make small changes to our itineraries or accommodation from time to time.

See the historic woolshed and blacksmith shop before stopping at Lake Tennyson for a cuppa, enjoy the natural alpine plants growing in this picturesque setting.

We will stop at Fowlers Hut, see the rabbit proof fence of old, drive over Island Saddle to the boundary of Rainbow Station. We will have a picnic lunch at Sedgemere Tarn before returning to Hanmer for the night an enjoyable meal out . L. D

Day 2 Molesworth Station to Blenheim

Today we will explore the eastern side of Molesworth Station with a visit to the historic Acheron Accommodation House with time to look around and have a cup of tea at Pig Trough Corner, see how the pioneers lived in this wonderfully preserved large cobb building, before enjoying a picnic lunch. We will cross the Guide River, and follow the cattle drovers’ route through Isolated Flat, recounting tales of old characters that made this area their home.

We will drive up and over Wards Pass to be able to view the Station operations hub, view the original Molesworth two room cobb cottage. We will continue our journey through the Awatere Valley, while stopping at various vantage points, e.g., Hodder Bridge, on our way to Blenheim, where we will enjoy an overnight stay. B. MT. L. D.

Day 3 Blenheim to Kaikoura

After a delicious café breakfast, we will walk through Seymour Square to visit and tour through the Omaka Museum.  Onward to the wonderful wine region to visit Yealands Estate winery which is a world leader in premier sustainable wine production. Yealands Estate’s passion for innovation and on-going commitment to environmental initiatives makes this particular winery a highly interesting visit.  After observing the coastline from Yealands Estate, we venture down to Ward Beach and then on to Kekerengu for a spot of lunch.  While driving to Kaikoura we will make the most of stopping to take in the magnificent views.

Tonight, we will stay in Kaikoura and enjoy a meal on the waterfront at The Pier Restaurant, which is an iconic nineteenth century character hotel – famous for the freshest seafood and Kaikoura crayfish. B. D.

Day 4 Kaikoura to Christchurch

We start the day with a delicious café breakfast, before visiting the Kaikoura Museum. Here we will experience the “New Normal” – The Kaikoura Earthquake Exhibition. New Normal is a compelling long-term exhibition that looks at the impacts of the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake on the people, the landscape, and the natural environment.

On our drive to Christchurch, we will take the inland route, visit the Historic Hurunui Hotel for lunch and weave through the small regional towns, observing points of interest.  The final evening of our tour we will stay in Christchurch central and share a wonderful meal and recap the past several days we have experienced together. B. D.

I have to say it was an amazing trip and I might have to acknowledge that Geoff’s knowledge of where the various farm boundaries were and are, the people who owned the farms and worked there, what mountain points we were looking at and history etc gave such a great depth of background, as did the notes, as that sort of information always gives another dimension to visiting a new place.
