SpaceX Careers: Working in the Commercial Space Industry

The commercial space industry is growing in significant ways. Learn more about in-demand roles at Elon Musk's private, California-based company SpaceX.

[Featured image] A young white man with glasses works on a circuit board.

Going to space used to be exclusive to astronauts, who spent years acquiring specialized training to undertake various government missions. However, in recent years, a growing number of companies have worked to expand space travel and tourism to private citizens, broadening the space industry in noticeable ways. In fact, new space companies comprised 32 percent of total research and development expenditures in 2020 [ 1 ].

SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk in 2002, is one such company. In 2021, it successfully partnered with NASA to launch the first commercial spacecraft, which carried a retired astronaut and three private citizens to the International Space Station for a six-month science mission [ 2 ].

Given that the space industry is poised to reach $1 trillion in revenue by 2040, it may be an incredibly lucrative field to work in [ 3 ]. Furthermore, according to a 2023 study from the Space Foundation, the commercial space industry is projected to grow by 41 percent over the next five years, largely due to the success of SpaceX [ 4 ]. In this article, we’ll review the different career areas you can explore if you’re interested in SpaceX and other companies working toward the future of space.

What is SpaceX?

SpaceX is a private, California-based company with between 5,000 and 10,000 employees. In recent years, it has undertaken a tremendous amount of hiring, especially in engineering , software and IT , sales , and management .

Jobs at SpaceX mirror what you might find at a leading tech company, with a specific focus on space and related endeavors. While a portion of the company concentrates on human spaceflight and related programs like ride sharing, it also works on rockets and orbital rockets (Falcon Heavy and Falcon 9), interplanetary exploration (Starship SN15), and telecommunications (Starlink).

In fact, telecommunications represents a significant portion of the business potential for the commercial space industry. Fifty percent of its growth is expected to come from satellite broadband, which can be especially useful in rural areas where cable internet is scarce or nonexistent.

SpaceX Jobs

Below, we’ve compiled the most common departments SpaceX typically hires for, with sample job titles you may want to consider as you think about your career opportunities.

1. Engineering

SpaceX has a high demand for engineers across several departments, including satellite development, avionics, environmental safety, launch, civil engineering and construction, materials, propulsion, and vehicles.

Many associate-level engineering roles require a bachelor’s degree in engineering and at least two years of experience, with direct experience in the area to which you’re applying. For example, a chemical engineer would need relevant experience in fluid systems. Senior engineering roles typically require more than five years of experience.

Sample job titles:

How to apply to SpaceX

SpaceX uses an applicant tracking system (ATS) , and the majority of interviews come from this source, according to candidate reporting on Glassdoor. The company wants “world-class talent” given its advanced products and initiatives, and getting an interview can be competitive. Let’s discuss how you can put together a strong application.

Building a strong SpaceX application

Most SpaceX roles require a mix of technical skills (sometimes called “hard skills”) and workplace skills (sometimes called “soft skills”). When it comes to workplace skills, it can be useful to identify the transferable skills you’ve developed and highlight how they would make you a strong candidate for a career in the space industry. Learn how to feature and format key skills on your resume , so your qualifications are evident.

If you’re looking to break into the space industry, including a resume objective —or a line about your larger career goals—can be beneficial. In your cover letter , it’s worthwhile to explain why you’re interested in the space industry in general and SpaceX specifically. Spend time researching the company and take note of what stands out to you: its mission, its products, its culture, or something else.

Although it can be difficult to follow up on an initial job application submitted through an ATS, it may be worthwhile to reach out to a SpaceX recruiter on LinkedIn and express your interest.

The future of space careers

The growth of the space industry has to do with its expansion from what’s been termed “space-for-earth” to “space-for-space.” Both refer to different but related economies.

Space-for-earth: The term “space-for-earth” concerns the space resources developed for use by those who live on Earth. These include things like satellite internet and national security products. Typically, the government has overseen this work, but lately, it has attracted private businesses.

Space-for-space: The term “space-for-space” refers to space resources developed for use by those in space, such as space tourism, space stations, cargo travel, and more. It’s not about finding resources in space and using them on Earth, but about cultivating resources, experiences, and potentially a sustainable way of life in space.

Other companies currently involved in the commercial “space-for-space” industry include:

Blue Origin: Founded by Jeff Bezos, Blue Origin primarily focuses on suborbital space flights and reusable rockets designed to clear a path for eventual life in space.

Virgin Galactic: From Virgin founder Richard Branson, the company focuses on space travel for private citizens.

Made in Space, Inc.: Designs and produces 3D printers for use in space

Axiom: Develops space infrastructure and aims to build the first commercial space station

LeoLabs: Works to monitor and protect Low Earth Orbit (LEO) through radar and data services that keep other companies’ satellite efforts safe and secure

Astroscale: An orbital debris removal company, Astroscale clears space to make sure space is developed sustainably.

Besides working in the private sector, you can also explore careers at government agencies such as NASA and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), both of which are heavily involved with private businesses when it comes to commercial space travel.

With many jobs requiring frequent travel, some professionals purposely seek out these opportunities ... [+] that afford them the chance to see the world.

My parents and extended family were almost all teachers and educators. With two months of summer off from work, along with plenty of vacation days, they had the privilege of enjoying both their work and traveling around the world.

They were bitten by the wanderlust bug. At family events, everyone would share their most recent exciting trip. My family seamlessly blended their love of travel, exploring new and different sites, with their occupation of teaching elementary, middle and high school students.

Is Frequent Traveling Compatible With Your Lifestyle?

With many jobs requiring frequent travel, some professionals purposely seek out these opportunities that afford them the chance to see the world. During the job search process, it is critical for professionals to consider how much travel is required to perform a specific role successfully. By carefully evaluating the travel requirements, candidates can make informed decisions about jobs that are a compatible fit for their circumstances, preferences and career aspirations.

Extensive travel can disrupt personal and family life, making it challenging to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Professionals with caregiving obligations may find frequent travel particularly burdensome or impossible.

However, for those who have wanderlust, a career that offers the opportunity to get paid to explore new places may be a dream come true. In these roles, accommodations and travel expenses are often covered, while you get to immerse yourself in different cultures.

Scotland's first minister tells Sky News he has "every intention" of winning the vote of confidence against him.

Speaking live to Sky's Scotland correspondent Connor Gillies , Humza Yousaf accused the opposition parties of "playing games".

"I intend to fight that vote of no confidence. I've got every intention of winning that vote of no confidence," he said.

Mr Yousaf said he understand the "upset and anger" felt by the Scottish Greens after he scrapped their power-sharing agreement yesterday.

But he said the opposition must act in "good faith" in order to make a minority government work "in the interests of the people of Scotland".

He said he will be writing to all political party leaders and party groups represented in the Scottish parliament, including the leaders of the Greens, to ask them to meet with him.

Asked how he can be confident he will win the no-confidence vote, he says: "I believe in our ability to be able to work with, negotiate, compromise where necessary. We've shown that in the past."

"I'll be looking to do that over the next coming days with the opposition leaders.

"And with that, I'm quite confident, very confident, in fact, that we'll be able to win that vote of confidence."

Mr Yousaf confirms he has no intention of resigning.

Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey has backed Labour calls for an election in Scotland, describing the situation facing the SNP and first minister as a "total mess".

Scottish Labour have lodged a motion of no confidence in the government, saying "we need an election right now".

Humza Yousef is also facing a no-confidence vote on his leadership next week.

Put forward by the Conservatives, it has the backing of Labour, the Lib Dems and the Greens.

"It's a total mess with the SNP and Humza Yousaf," Sir Ed said during a visit to the River Goyt in Stockport.

"I personally think this SNP government has really failed Scotland."

He said the SNP has let Scotland down on key services such as health and education because the party has been "so focused on their ideological obsession of independence".

"On these basic things that matter to people, the SNP have been failing them and so Liberal Democrats have been saying in Scotland, look, we need to focus on the NHS, we need to focus on our schools, the cost of living, the environment."

"Because the SNP haven't done, I actually think it's time for a general election in Scotland."

Following the prime minister's trip to Europe this week, Beth Rigby , Jess Phillips and Ruth Davidson examine whether Rishi Sunak is convincing on the world stage and ask if his announcement on defence spending will help the Conservatives' chances in next week's local elections.

And after the Rwanda bill was passed this week - is this another win for the prime minister or a policy that he should have dumped months ago?

Plus, what's the future for Scottish First Minister Hamza Yusuf following the breakdown of the coalition between the SNP and the Greens. Ruth Davidson who was the leader of the Scottish Conservatives gives her verdict.

And how do MPs get deselected if they behave badly and can you become an MP if you have a past?  The team answer more of your questions.

With a general election looming, what counts as gains and losses for the main parties in next week's locals?

Sky's election analyst Michael Thrasher tells us what to look out for:

Lord David Cameron has said he is "deeply concerned" as a British man is charged with conducting hostile state activity to benefit Russia.

"While we must let the judicial process run its course, I am deeply concerned by allegations of British nationals carrying out criminal activity on UK soil to benefit the Russian state," the foreign secretary said.

"We will use the full weight of the criminal justice system to hold anyone found guilty of crimes linked to foreign interference to account."

Dylan Earl, 20, is alleged to have engaged in conduct targeting businesses which were linked to Ukraine in order to benefit the Russian state.

Nick Price, head of the Crown Prosecution Service's special crime and counter terrorism division, said: "Included in the alleged activity was involvement in the planning of an arson attack on a Ukrainian-linked commercial property in March 2024."

Four others have also been charged in connection with the investigation, the CPS said, after reporting restrictions were lifted on Friday.

Home Secretary James Cleverly said: "Hostile foreign acts will never be tolerated on UK soil.

"Our National Security Act has allowed charges to be brought against an individual alleged to be carrying out harmful activity for the benefit of the Russian state.

"If you threaten UK security, you will face justice."

There might not be a general election just yet, but there are important votes that will define how the areas around us are run for the next four years.

See what's happening where you are here:

Labour's shadow chancellor says it is "time for a fresh start in Scotland", reiterating calls for a fresh election from Scottish Labour's Anas Sarwar.

Scottish Labour say they are putting forward a motion of no condolence in the government today.

They have also said they will back a motion of no confidence next week in First Minister Humza Yousaf.

"The chaos and division at the heart of the SNP is having a real impact on public services and the lives of communities across Scotland," Rachel Reeves says.

"And we now have two broken governments - the SNP in Scotland and the Conservatives in Westminster.

"It is time for fresh elections in Scotland and across the UK."

The shadow chancellor was speaking during a visit to Tees Valley today, where she and Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer are discussing the cost of living.

Earlier, the Scottish Labour leader said it is a matter of "when, not if" the first minister resigns ( see post at 11.56am ).

"But this isn't just about him [Humza Yousaf]," Mr Sarwar said.

"We have no confidence in this SNP government.

"That is why we need an election right now."

Scottish politics is in "utter chaos", a Greens source tells Sky News, as the first minister faces a no-confidence motion and Scottish Labour has said it will file a separate motion against the government.

The Greens, who were ousted from a power-sharing agreement with the SNP yesterday, have said they will back the motion of no confidence in Humza Yousaf.

However, the Greens source said the party is undecided on the motion of no confidence in the government.

The leader of Scottish Labour says it is a matter of "when, not if" the first minister resigns.

Humza Yousaf is facing a motion of no confidence, put forward by the Conservatives and backed by the Greens, Labour and Lib Dems, next week.

However, Labour has said it will also table a motion of no confidence in the SNP government.

In a video posted on X, Anas Sarwar said "this isn't just about him [Humza Yousaf]".

A short time ago, the Alba Party said it would not be backing Labour's motion (see previous post).

However Alba's one MSP, Ash Regan, may prove to have the deciding vote in the motion of no confidence in Mr Yousaf.

Scotland's Alba Party says it won't back Labour's motion of no confidence in the Scottish government, warning them to "beware in their glee".

Earlier, Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar said he would lay down the motion - which is separate to an earlier no-confidence motion in Humza Yousaf as first minister - later today ( see post at 10.12am ).

However, Sky's Scotland correspondent Connor Gillies says Alba's announcement leaves the Labour motion weakened before it has even started.

An Alba Party spokesperson said: "Anas Sarwar’s grandstanding is just an attempt to remain relevant. However, unionist parties should beware in their glee."

"As much as Humza Yousaf and the SNP find themselves in a tricky predicament, independence supporters will not turn back to the yoke of Tory and Labour mediocrity.

"Alba Party are now ensuring that independence supporters have a party they can turn to.“

Alex Salmond's pro-independence Alba Party has one MSP in the Scottish parliament ( see post at 10.55am ).

Ash Regan, once a rival to Humza Yousaf for SNP leader, defected to the party last year.

While the party isn't backing the motion against the government as a whole, she may well have the deciding vote in the motion of no confidence against Mr Yousaf next week ( see post at 9.47am ).

Sky's  Connor Gillies says  that currently makes her "possibly the most powerful woman in Scotland".

Russia's Nuclear Deterrent Command Center Imperiled by Winter Freeze—Report

A Russian nuclear deterrent command center in Moscow has been imperiled by power outages that have impacted more than one-quarter of the region's cities amid freezing temperatures, a Russian Telegram channel has reported.

The VChK-OGPU outlet, which purports to have inside information from Russian security forces, reported that the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings—part of the Russian Space Forces, a branch of the country's Aerospace Forces—near Solnechnogorsk in Moscow is without power.

It serves as the space forces early warning network against potential ballistic missile attacks.

The development comes as Russians are reported to be suffering from power outages in their homes in the Moscow region caused by technical issues at plants amid subzero temperatures.

On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is about 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes.

Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov and Naro-Fominsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.

Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky and Selyatino are also without power.

The Telegram channel said that at the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings, "the crew...is on duty around the clock."

"It is here that the decision on a retaliatory nuclear strike is executed," the channel said.

Newsweek could not independently verify the report and has reached out to the Russian Defense Ministry by email for comment.

Power outages have also been reported in Russia's second-largest city, St. Petersburg, in the country's western Voronezh region, in the southwest city of Volgograd, and in Rostov, which borders Ukraine, a country that Russia has been at war with since February 24, 2022.

On Sunday, two shopping malls in St. Petersburg were forced to close because of problems with light and heating, reported local news outlet 78.ru. Hundreds of other homes in the city have had no electricity, water or heating for days amid temperatures of -25 C (-13 F).

Russian authorities have also been forced to compensate passengers of a train that ran from Samara to St. Petersburg (a 20-hour journey) without heating during -30 C (-22 F) temperatures. Videos circulating on social media showed carriage windows frozen over. A passenger also said the toilet didn't work during the trip because of frozen pipes.
