In southwestern Europe on the Iberian Peninsula, Spain boasts a culinary scene that is celebrated worldwide. From tapas to paella, Spain tantalizes the taste buds with a spectrum of flavors. Its social atmosphere, vibrant nightlife, and wealth of monuments make Spain an incredible place. Located on the northeast coast, Barcelona offers some of the best beaches in Spain. This cosmopolitan capital is dotted with architectural treasures, from Gothic cathedrals to Modernisme creations – the world's largest, nearly finished Catholic church, La Sagrada Familia dominates the skyline. The Gothic Quarter encompasses the oldest part of Barcelona, with numerous medieval landmarks and the city's Roman wall. Madrid, which is centrally located, boasts a dynamic blend of excitement, relaxation, and unparalleled nightlife. As the sun goes down, the city comes to life. Dine late into the evening, or dance at nightclubs until the sun comes up – this city truly never sleeps. Take a stroll through the Patio de los Naranjos in Seville, a mosque-cathedral courtyard where cypresses and orange trees are gracefully planted, and listen while the rhythmic beats of flamenco resonate through the cobblestone streets of southwest Spain. Savor the warmth of Spanish hospitality with a fiesta of colors, traditions, and passion throughout Spain.

If you're hoping to avoid the summer beach crowds, consider heading to some of the great cities during the cooler months. Many of the cultural sights are best visited during the winter when the crowds are at a minimum.
  • While the trains throughout the country are efficient and of high quality, they do not always go by the high population areas. Many times you will also have to pass through Madrid, even if it isn't on the way. Consider all of your options as sometimes taking a bus can save you both time and money.
  • If you're driving your own car, watch out for parking fines, particularly in the larger cities. The fees can be quite high and they are rarely lenient when passing out tickets.

spain tour cost

Is Spain expensive? How much will a trip to Spain cost? Well-known for its sunshine, tapas, siestas and fantastic wine, Spain has always been a popular holiday destination. However, with all these people wanting to experience the Spanish sun and laid-back lifestyle for themselves, it’s likely you’re wondering if Spain is an expensive destination to visit.

Spain can certainly seem more expensive if visiting popular places such as Barcelona or Madrid , however, it can still be a very affordable destination and travellers can expect to pay approximately €60-185 per person per day.

This can obviously vary significantly so after spending many months travelling in Spain over several years and keeping a keen eye on our expenses across different regions, we’ve narrowed the five biggest areas that are going to factor into an overall trip cost: accommodation, transportation, food, activities, and entertainment.

If you are smart about where and how you spend your money in these areas, you will find that a visit to Spain doesn’t have to cost much at all.

Accommodation Prices

The first biggest area that you’re going to need to consider when planning for your overall trip to Spain cost is going to be accommodation.

This is likely going to take one of the biggest percentages out of your Spanish travel budget and it is important to get an idea of the average costs and types of accommodation available in Spain before you get too far into planning your trip.

There are a multitude of lodging choices throughout Spain and they all come with radically different price tags. In fact, it is very much in this category where your overall Spain trip cost could skyrocket.

Luxury hotels abound in this Southern European nation, especially in cities like Madrid , Barcelona , Seville , Málaga , and along the Costa del Sol and these can come with an incredibly steep price tag. However, while high-end accommodation certainly isn’t hard to come by in Spain, the same goes for more budget-friendly options.

Keeping in mind that the big cities and popular tourist areas tend to be more expensive than smaller, more off-beat towns, there are still myriad affordable options available for the more budget-conscious traveller.

For instance, if your travel budget falls more into the mid-range category, you can expect a double room in a budget- to mid-range hotel to range anywhere from €50-150 per night. Obviously, prices will vary depending on factors like season, location, amenities, region etc, however, this is a good average to go off on.

If you’re interested in staying in a 4-star hotel or above, the average price is going to be relatively high. Expect a night in a luxury hotel to start at around €200 and go up from there – depending on the region, season, etc.

The charming Plaza de España in Seville

If you’re truly travelling in Spain on a budget or backpacking through Spain, then hostels are likely going to be your best option. Luckily, Spain has well-cemented itself on the backpacker trail and there are usually numerous hostels to choose from in most major cities.

Even smaller, lesser-visited cities in Spain usually have one or two. While the average cost of a dorm bed in Spain isn’t as cheap as you’ll find in Central or Eastern Europe, you can still expect them to be an affordable place to spend the night, especially if you’re travelling solo. Depending on where you find yourself, you can expect a bed in a hostel dorm to start somewhere around €20-30 per night.

If the traditional accommodation options seem like they might be a little too expensive for you, there is still good news. Airbnb is an excellent option to save money on accommodation costs in Spain.

While there are certainly some cities in Spain ( Barcelona springs to mind) where the ethics of using Airbnb to travel are called to question, there are ways to use the platform responsibly without having a negative effect on the locals.

For instance, finding a private room on Airbnb where you are sharing the house with a local is an excellent way to cut down on the cost of travel in Spain without taking away affordable housing from those who actually live in the city. It is also a particularly attractive way to save money if you’re travelling as a couple.

On average, you can expect a private room on Airbnb in a major city to cost around €50-60 per night and expect to pay about €40-50 per night in smaller cities and towns. For those looking for an entire one-bedroom apartment in a Spanish city, then plan to spend about €75-100 per night.

All in, whether you’re travelling solo or as a couple, plan to spend roughly €20-100 per person per night on accommodation in Spain.

Transportation Prices

Now that we’ve covered the cost of accommodation, it is time to get into the price of another major category in your Spanish travel budget: transportation. You’re going to need to get around the country and the cities you’re visiting somehow and, unfortunately, it is going to cost you.

There are two different areas you need to factor in when you’re considering how much to budget for transport costs in Spain: intercity transport (ie. long-distance coaches and train) and city public transportation (ie. metros, trams, and buses). I’m going to cover intercity transport first.

If you want to cut down on your total Spain trip cost, then I am going to give you one major piece of advice: don’t take the train.

Before visiting this wonderful country when I was in the research stage, I was astounded by how many travel blogs and forums acted as if the only form of transport between cities in Spain was the train, and I was even more astounded when I realised how expensive fares were.

Sure, you can save money on train tickets in Spain if you book months in advance (we recommend using Omio for this) and they are fast and comfortable, however, if you want to be a little bit flexible with your Spain itinerary or are trying to save as much money as you can, then the train isn’t the most affordable option.

If you’d like to take the train, then a train pass can be good value. If you’re from outside of Europe, you can view Eurail Spain Passes here . Alternatively, if you’re from the EU, you can view Interrail Spain Passes here.

A far better and more budget-friendly option would be to use the extensive intercity bus system. The system is just as vast as the train system (sometimes even more so — the train can’t go everywhere!) and tickets can be more than 50% less expensive than the train.

For instance, if you’re looking to get between two major cities in Spain by bus, expect to pay about €15-20 for a one-way ticket. Obviously, this depends on the length of the journey, however, it is a good average.

Inside Atocha Train Station

Another popular mode of transport in Spain is to rent a car , especially for those who want to get out of the bigger cities or are keen to explore some harder-to-reach areas.

Surprisingly, if you know where to look, daily rental car rates can actually be quite low, especially if you get third-party insurance (we suggest iCarHireInsurance for affordable excess insurance!) and are comfortable driving a manual transmission.

Expect car hire prices in Spain to start at around €25-30 per day, however, this is not factoring in fuel prices or the cost of any insurance. If you want to find great deals for renting a car, we recommend using Rentalcars.com .

It is also worth knowing that, if you’re from outside the EU, the Spanish government requires you to obtain an International Driver’s Permit. If you’re caught driving on a non-EU licence without one, your car could be towed and you will face a hefty fine that will certainly add to your Spain holiday cost.

Now that we’ve covered the cost of intercity transport, let’s talk about how much it will cost get around the amazing Spanish cities that you’ll be visiting.

Luckily for the budget-conscious traveller, most Spanish cities are gloriously walkable and you can easily get around to most of the main tourist sites on foot. However, sometimes, you need to use public transportation to get from point A to point B when the distances are just too far to walk.

The town of Getaria near San Sebastian

Spanish cities are well-served by affordable public transport including both bus and metro systems. If you plan to stay in any city for longer than a few days and expect to use the transport system a lot, it can be worth purchasing a travel card as it will inevitably cost you less per journey than buying single tickets.

However, if you don’t plan on using the transport system much, then purchasing single tickets is going to be a better bet. Most bus and metro tickets cost between €1.30-1.50 for a single journey.

All in all, if don’t rent a car, only plan to travel between cities only every three or four days or so and walk most places instead of relying on the bus, metro, or uber/taxis, then expect to spend an average of about €8-10 per day on transportation.

If you rent a car, expect to spend about €20-30 on transport costs once you factor in everything from petrol to parking to insurance – assuming you’re splitting the cost of a car hire between two people.

Food Prices

Now that we’ve covered the boring costs of Spain travel like accommodation and transport, now it’s time to talk about one of the main reasons you’re visiting Spain anyway: the food.

Spanish cuisine has reached a pique in its popularity with many people visiting the country solely to experience its unique tapas culture and balanced Mediterranean diet.

And no visit to Spain is complete without taking full advantage of the many gastronomic opportunities available. And luckily, if you know where to go, eating out in Spain does not have to be expensive at all.

Sure, if you plan to eat out every single meal and only frequent restaurants directly catered toward tourists, then it won’t be hard to spend the majority of your Spain budget on food. However, if you are frugal and smart about when you eat out in a restaurant, you don’t need to spend much money at all.

Overall, I would suggest only planning on eating one meal out per day if you’re planning on sticking to a tight budget. Breakfast isn’t a huge ordeal in Spain so it is easy to skip going out for your first meal of the day while you’re in the country.

Also, if you happen to be staying in accommodation that provides free breakfast, that will save you some money anyway. Otherwise, we recommend finding a place to stay that offers at least some self-catering facilities so you can make your own breakfast for yourself. This will save you lots of money because groceries in Spain can be very affordable.

If you do eat one meal out per day, I would advise that meal to be lunch. Lunch is often the biggest, most heavy meal in Spanish culture and it is possible to get an incredibly hearty and large meal at lunchtime for a great value.

One of the best budget tips I could give when trying to figure out your Spain trip cost is to take advantage of the prevalent menú del día deals that are available throughout the country.

Menú del Día in Madrid

Basically, a menú del día (literally menu of the day) is a daily set lunch menu that will typically include a beverage (a glass of wine, beer, or a soft drink), an appetiser, a main dish, and a dessert or coffee all for a low price.

There is generally a lot of food in these set menus and it is an excellent way to get a hearty Spanish meal without breaking the bank. They are available at most restaurants, however, the restaurants catered toward tourists tend to be a bit more pricey.

Generally, I wouldn’t recommend spending more than about €10-12 on a menú del día , even in cities like Madrid or Seville. However, daily menus can cost a bit more in Catalonia where you’re looking at an average of about €15 per person.

Now it’s time to get onto the price of one of Spain’s most popular food traditions: tapas! Tapas are a wonderful way to go out, have a drink, and sample some of the country’s top specialities without getting too much food.

They are also typically affordable. In some cities, you might even get a free tapa with the order of a drink. This is common in most bars in cities like Granada but also more local restaurants in Madrid and the surrounding regions, as well.

Conversely, in cities like Bilbao and San Sebastian where pintxos reign supreme, there is rarely any snack included in the drink price.

Pintxos & Cider from Bar Txepetxa

Depending on what you order, tapas will set you back around €3-7. They are quite small and you will need to order a few different plates in order to have a full meal in most cases.

Therefore, a light meal with some tapas and a drink will rarely cost you more than about €10-15 per person. This is, of course, if you decide to head to a restaurant or bar that is more catered toward locals rather than tourists where prices are less likely to be inflated.

All in, if plan to budget about €20-30 per person per day for food in Spain, you are sure to eat very well!

Activity Prices

Now that we’ve covered the basic costs of food, accommodation, and transportation in Spain, we need to discuss how much it will cost you to actually do things in this beautiful country.

Spain is packed with amazing historical monuments, fascinating museums, and wonderful natural sites (such as Montserrat ) that it can seem overwhelming to choose what to see and do when you’re visiting. However, heading to many of these attractions tend to cost money and it is a major factor to consider when figuring out how much your Spain trip will cost.

In Spain, most museums will charge an entry fee. While the fee will vary from museum to museum, you can expect to pay for entry for most of them.

Madrid’s ever-popular Prado Museum, for instance, charges €15 for entry. Conversely, the underrated Museo del Vino in Málaga , where you get two glasses of wine along with entry to the museum, is €5.

One way to save money on museum visits in Spain is to check to see if there are any free entry time periods. Many of the most prominent museums open their doors for free for a few hours each day or one day per week.

Make sure to check the specific museum’s website to see if there are any times when you can get in for free.

Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao

Another popular activity in Spain is to visit the many cathedrals and historic sites that are all over the country. Normally, you will have to pay an entry fee for these as well. The fee usually depends on how popular the site is and how much work needs to be done to preserve the site.

For instance, entry into Granada’s famed Alhambra costs €19 without a guided tour, however, this is on the high-end for historical site entry.

Another popular activity in Spain would be to go to a flamenco show. Now, there is a massive discrepancy between costs for flamenco shows and a lot of it really depends on where and when you decide to see this most Spanish of performances.

If you head to a massive, touristy flamenco show in Madrid, for instance, you can sometimes end up paying up to €50 for the pleasure of attending.

However, if you find yourself in cities like Seville or Jerez (the region where the art actually got its start), it is possible to see authentic flamenco in a bar just for the price of a drink. However, if you want to head to an authentic “flamenco show” that is more geared toward tourists, an agreeable price to pay for this would be around €20-25.

All in, if you only choose to do one paid activity per day (and opt to forgo them entirely some days), expect to pay about €10-20 per day on this.

Visiting Granada's Alhambra

Entertainment Prices

Now that we’ve covered the costs of accommodation, transport, food, and activities in Spain, we have reached our final category: entertainment. How much you tend to spend on entertainment truly depends on your general habits, however, you don’t need to spend a lot in Spain to have a good time.

If you like to go out in the evening and have a good time, then Spain is the country for you. Famous for its late-night culture, going out in Spain is common and relatively affordable, especially compared with prices found in Northern Europe or the USA.

For instance, a glass of house wine at a bar in Spain is likely only going to set you back around €2-2.50 and a small draft beer (colloquially referred to as a caña in Spain) is normally only about €1.50-2. Oftentimes, as well, you will get a small dish of olives or some other snack with your drinks.

In cities like Granada , it is also common to get a free tapa (which is more than a dish of olives) with the order of a drink, however, drinks can be slightly more expensive to make up for the free food.

However, it isn’t normally anything significant, as a caña will still only set you back about €2 and you’ll get a sizeable snack with it as well!

Liquor and hard alcohol are likely going to cost more, with a basic cocktail like a gin & tonic or a negroni will cost somewhere between €6-8 depending on where it is you’re drinking.

All in, if you drink responsibly and don’t plan to spend most of your nights in Spain out on the town, you don’t need to budget more than about €5-10 per day on entertainment in Spain.

Vermouth in Spain

Average Trip to Spain Cost

With all the above factors considered, this is the average amount you should expect to spend in Spain per person per day. This is assuming some costs, such as for accommodation or a car hire, are split between two people.

Accommodation: €20-100/night

Transportation: €10-30/day

Food: €15-25/day

Activities: €10-20/day

Entertainment: €5-10/day

Providing that you only travel between cities every three or four days, cook some daily meals at your accommodation, and don’t spend a lot of money on expensive tours or activities, you can expect your average trip to Spain cost to be around €60-185 per day.

This doesn’t include any pre-trip expenses such as flights or travel insurance. For travel insurance, World Nomads   offers flexible and simple travel insurance policies with coverage for more than 150 activities that you can buy or extend while on the road.

The Castillo de San Sebastian in Cádiz

Travelling in Spain doesn’t have to be too expensive. While it isn’t the cheapest country to visit in Europe for Western travellers, it is still an affordable destination with lots of ways to save money.

In American dollars for a family of 4 what is the amount of money I’m looking at that I would have to have for the trip to Spain and cost while I’m there

It depends on your budget and what you’d like to do how much it will end up costing, but the prices in this article are an average per person. I recommend looking up the current exchange rate at xe.com as it would be wise to familiarize yourself with before travelling as Spain uses the Euro.

Spain Barcelona Sagrada Di Familia

Walk into Gaudi's la Sagrada Familia in Barcelona

When you picture Barcelona you think of Antoni Gaudi, the 20th century architect who left his Art Nouveau mark on the city. The La Sagrada Familia is one of his greatest works and has been inspiring crowds since construction began in 1882. On our Barcelona tours, you'll view the outside of the building with your Local Specialist and marvel at the sheer size and its intricate designs.

Spain Madrid Palacio De Cibeles

Admire the Royal Palace in Madrid

See how the other half live when you view the Palacio Real de Madrid, the largest palace in Europe. This impressive building is the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family, although you probably won’t catch a glimpse as it’s only used for state ceremonies. Gaze in awe at the grand facades and hear stories about the palace from your Local Specialist.

Spain Valencia City Of Arts And Sciences

Explore the modern cites of Valencia

You can’t go past Valencia when you visit Spain. This gorgeous city combines historic treasures like the Town Hall, the Quart Towers, and Valencia Cathedral, with futuristic gems like the City of Arts and Science, an otherworldly recreation center for culture and science. Why not hop on a bicycle and go exploring through the gardens of pretty Turia Park?

Spain Valencia City Of Arts Sciences at the sunrise

Admire the city of arts & sciences in Valencia

The City of Arts and Sciences is an ensemble of 6 areas in the dry river bed of Turia. Designed by Valencian architect, it is an impressive example of modern architecture. The "city" is made up of an opera house, performing arts center, Imax Cinema, planetarium, science museum, and an open-air aquarium. Come here any time of day or night with your fellow Costsaver travelers and you are guaranteed to be amazed!

Spain Barcelona Park Guell

Stroll around Park Guell in Barcelona

Park Guell is one of the quirkiest places I have ever visited in my life. Not only will you feel as though you have stepped into some kind of psychedelic fairytale, you will also be gifted with an incredible sweeping view of Barcelona from above (provided you are willing to brave the steps).

WHAT TO EAT & DRINK IN SPAIN

From paella to patatas and croquetas to churros, Spanish food is the gift that keeps on giving. We’ve got all the hottest tips on where to find the best Spanish tapas and treats.

A cold soup may come as a shock, but it will all make sense as you slurp into this tomato-y dish in the sizzling Seville sun. Andalusia’s beloved Gazpacho is a chilled soup made from raw, blended vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers and bell peppers and we think it’s the most refreshing part of the day.

Sangria is the fruity national symbol of Spain and there’s nothing better than kicking back with a cold glass (or jug!) of this delicious wine punch on your Spain tour. The recipes for sangria vary all over the country, but you can bet you’ll love this cooling beverage made with fruit and alcohols like red or white wine, cava or even cider.

These tasty street treats are Spain’s amazing answer to doughnuts. They’re made from fried dough cut into long sausage shapes and smothered in cinnamon sugar. Don’t forget to dip them in hot melted chocolate and don’t forget to pick up more than one - we bet you’ll want to come back for more.

WHEN IS BEST TO VISIT SPAIN

Famed for its 300 days of sunshine a year, pack your hat and sunglasses and get ready to shine almost any time of the year.

Best time to visit Spain’s beaches

July and August are the hottest summer months in Spain, but we love kicking back on Spain’s beaches in May and June when the weather is still beautiful and there are fewer crowds along the coast.

Best time to experience Spanish festivals

Head to Spain in spring and early summer if you want to catch a fiesta or two, from local flamenco and food fairs, to Easter’s semana santa and the amazing castellers human towers of Catalonia.

Best time to explore Spain’s cities

If you’re after some Spanish sightseeing in the cities, the best time to visit is autumn, spring or even winter when the weather isn’t too hot and the summer crowds haven’t arrived.

PACKING TIPS FOR SPAIN

HOW TO TRAVEL RESPONSIBLY IN SPAIN

Bring a reusable water bottle

Tap water is safe to drink in nearly all of Spain, so bring a reusable bottle and reduce your plastic waste. You can even find public drinking fountains to refill your bottle.

Spanish food is best enjoyed the local way, and you’ll have a ball visiting the local markets to find fresh fruit, vegetables, bread, cheese, olives and wine while chatting with the local producers.

Leave no trace

Help to preserve Spain’s incredible natural beauty by following the rules for each protected area. Never leave any litter behind and stay on the marked paths when walking in Spain.

Thomas Cook, apart from offering some of the best Spain holiday packages, also assists you in the visa process. This is very handy as you don't have to go through too much trouble on your own to get a Spanish visa.

A Span tourist visa can be procured through the Spanish embassy which is located in many Indian cities. Spain is a Schengen country, so you need a Schengen visa to enter this nation. You can get the visa from the Spanish embassy or any other Schengen country’s embassy.

Foreign Currency

Spain is a nation in Europe and like most other countries in the continent, Euro is the currency used in Spain as well. You will need to transact in Euros when you are in Spain. The Indian Rupee is not valid in the country, so you either have to exchange the currency or withdraw the local currency from a bank or ATM while you are on your Spain trip.

Currently, 1 Euro is equivalent to INR 91. You have to check the conversion rate on the day you convert, as the rates keep fluctuating. It is a good idea for you to do some research and find the agency that offers the best exchange rate . Also, remember to convert money only from registered agencies or banks, and not from random shops located in a small Spanish market, as that can lead to fraudulent transactions.

You can also carry an international credit card and use the card to make payments at shops, hotels and restaurants. If you book one of the Spain vacation packages, most of the expenses will be covered, so your spending on the spot will be limited.

Fed up with tourists, Barcelona protesters blast them with water guns

Locals marched and delivered a manifesto on tourism’s cost-of-living impact, the latest backlash against a global travel surge since the end of pandemic limits.

Key takeaways

Summary is AI-generated, newsroom-reviewed.

  • Demonstrators say that tourism inflates living costs and that revenue distribution is uneven.
  • They made 13 demands, including limits on tourist accommodations and fewer cruise terminals.
  • The frustration in Spain reflects a growing backlash against overtourism around the world.

Thousands took to the streets of Barcelona over the weekend to protest overtourism , some armed with brightly colored water pistols that sent bewildered visitors fleeing restaurant patios, abandoning half-eaten meals.

The protesters, who carried signs reading “Tourists go home,” say tourism has inflated the cost of living for Barcelonians, while the revenue from visitors hasn’t been fairly distributed across the city. As travel rebounds after the end of pandemic restrictions, the frustration in Spain reflects growing backlash against overtourism around the world.

  • Led by the Assemblea de Barris pel Decreixement Turístic, or the Neighborhood Assembly for Tourism Degrowth, the protesters listed 13 demands in a manifesto published Saturday, including restrictions on tourist accommodations, fewer cruise terminals in the city’s port and an end to tourism advertisements using public money.
  • Local authorities estimated 2,800 people participated in the protests. Daniel Pardo Rivacoba, 48, a member of the organizing group, said as many as 20,000 people from 170 organizations took part in the protests.
  • Rivacoba said the use of water guns was a spontaneous decision made by individual protesters and was not suggested by organizers. “Receiving water on your face is not nice, but it’s not violent,” he said.
  • Responding to growing concerns, Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni pledged Saturday to reserve 10,000 residential units usually used by tourists for local residents and increase taxes on tourists, among other measures.

Barcelona has long been a popular tourist destination. Last year, close to 26 million visited the region, according to official figures , and Spain was the second-most-visited country in the world, according to U.N. Tourism . Barcelona’s population is 1.7 million.

Along with Venice , it is where the backlash against overtourism began, said T.C. Chang, a professor of geography at the National University of Singapore who researches urban tourism.

“As far as I know, there has been no explicit violence. But [overtourism] was already recognized at least 2-3 years before the pandemic,” he said in an email, noting that residents have also put up “No tourists welcome” signs in neighborhoods. “What has happened in Barcelona will spread to more tourist-crowded places beyond Europe,” he added.

The bigger picture

Locales in Japan , Indonesia , Greece , Italy and the Netherlands have also taken steps to curb influxes of visitors in the past year.

In Japan, one town sought to install a huge screen at a popular photo spot in front of Mount Fuji to stop tourists from taking selfies and causing traffic jams. Last year, the Greek government imposed a new timed ticketing system for the ancient Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, along with a visitor cap of 20,000 people per day. Venice experimented with extracting extra fees from tourists, while Amsterdam restricted the construction of new hotels.

“I think the key point here is about sustainable tourism development and sustainable management of tourist flows within a country,” said J.J. Zhang, a tourism geographer at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

As a possible solution, Zhang suggested determining the capacity of popular sites and controlling traffic, such as by “using technology where real-time data can be communicated to tourists such that overcrowded places could be avoided,” he said.

But Bob McKercher, a professor in tourism at the University of Queensland in Australia, raised another issue: The majority of tourists worldwide are domestic. “So while overtourism may be a long-standing issue,” he said, “can you really stop people from visiting their own country?”

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

Expat issues ‘complicated’ travel warning for Brits holidaying to Spain this summer

author image

Cala Llombards

If you’re counting down the days to your summer holiday to Spain , you might want to mark down a few dates on your calender.

From Barcelona to the Costa del Sol, we all know Spain is much loved fly and flop destination for Brits – a staggering 17.8 million UK tourists flocked to the country in 2023.

However, one cultural difference could catch unsuspecting travelers off guard: bank holidays.

While bank holidays in the UK are mostly on Mondays (with a few exceptions such as Good Friday and Christmas ) Spain has them across various days of the week.

Yep, Spaniards aren’t always given the gift of a long weekend, as supermarkets, restaurants and clubs shut their doors for numerous celebrated days across the year that occur on any and all weekdays.

This fact caught Stephanie Saint Remy , a YouTube content creator, off guard, when she moved to the country. The revelation led her to her share the knowledge with those planning to travel like her.

Stephanie remarked that ‘the amount of times I’ve gone into a supermarket on a Wednesday only to find that it was closed, is incredible.’

Far from ideal if you’re looking to pick up those all-important holiday snacks (Lays crisps anyone?)

Stephanie also warned that tourists and residents alike may also be caught out by the fact that not all bank holidays are the same across Spain, with certain events only happening in one or two communities.

She said the situation can be particularly ‘complicated’ because it’s hard to find much information on the internet. Thankfully she’s come up with a solution: ‘If I go into my local supermarket they’ll have their monthly opening hours printed.’ This indicates which days are bank holidays. Genius.

Stephanie also suggests creating a timetable for the events occurring during your stay in Spain to keep yourself in the loop.

Prime holiday season is rapidly approaching, so what events should you note down if you’re travelling in the coming months? Fear not, for the hard work has been done for you.

Here are the public holidays across Spain for July and August (although like Stephanie says, these vary from region to region):

  • Thursday 25th July – Both the National Day of Galicia and St. James’s Day, impacting Galicia, Basque Country, Cantabria, Madrid and Navarre.
  • Monday 5th August – Our Lady of Africa, taking place in Ceuta.
  • Thursday 15th August – The Assumption of Mary, a national bank holiday.

For those travelling in the later months of the year to escape the floods of other tourists and the chill settling in over the UK, all dates can be found online .

Tourists in Spain sprayed with water guns in latest 'go home' protest

Tourists in Spain sprayed with water guns in latest 'go home' protest

Diners had water sprayed over them by locals protesting tourism in barcelona.

Tom Earnshaw

Tom Earnshaw

Tourists in Spain enjoying a day out across Barcelona found themselves being sprayed with water pistols in the latest 'go home' protest to hit the country and its islands.

Recent months have been marred with a flurry of protests against tourism right across Spain .

From Tenerife in the Canary Islands over to the Balearic island of Majorca in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, Spanish natives are uniting against what they call 'bad tourism ', with some locals even worried that their life as they know it is 'facing collapse' due to what they claim are the negative effects of tourism.

Now, images from the weekend show Spain's second city and the capital of Catalonia overwhelmed by thousands of protestors telling tourists in Barcelona to 'go home'.

Images from Saturday (6 July) show huge swathes of people walking through the city centre, claiming tourism has 'enormous negative impacts, in labour, social and environmental terms'.

Among the protestors were individuals with water guns. Filled to the brim, they opened fire on tourists sitting at restaurant tables enjoying a spot of al fresco dining .

Crowds went by as tourists enjoyed a drink (Paco Freire/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images)

And then when staff tried to get involved, they also found themselves a little on the wet side.

Due to the crowds, guests were then stopped from leaving their hotels and restaurants with protestors using tape to seal the entrances to the buildings.

The purpose of the protest, which had almost 3,000 people in attendance, was to put pressure on authorities when it came to the high cost of living in Spain. They claim reducing annual footfall will help focus attention back on those who live in the country.

And protesters have a point. Rents are up 68 percent in the last decade, with the cost of buying a house up 38 percent.

Going forward, Barcelona’s mayor, Jaume Collboni, has promised to ban tourists from renting holiday apartments by 2028 to try and tackle the housing crisis in the city.

He said: "We are confronting what we believe is Barcelona’s largest problem."

The mayor himself said that licences for short-term rentals will be scrapped, which could free up to 10,101 apartments across the major city.

It comes after recent action on the Spanish island of Majorca where locals have plotted to 'reclaim' one of the most gorgeous beaches on the planet due to it being targeted by tourists.

You can see why tourists go to Calo des Moro on Majorca (Getty Stock Images)

The beach in question is Calo des Moro, which is described as 'one of the last paradises of Majorca'.

It's bespoke given it is absolutely tiny and found in a small cove tucked in from the main seafront. Boasting shallow, turquoise water, it is truly stunning.

But protest group Platform Mallorca Platja Tour [Majorcan Beach Tour] now wants to 'squeeze' out tourists from the area, saying the beach has become a symbol of 'massification'.

"It’s full of Instagrammers who go just to take their picture," one protestor said.

She got an ultra-thorough checkup without coughing up for a million-dollar checkup.

Scans, tests and blood work. The crucial health screenings are all typically done with one’s primary physician during an annual visit to the doctor’s office.

But Bryn Elise bypassed her doc and, instead, opted for an $810 full-body exam in a foreign land.

A screenshot from TikTok influencer Bryn Elise.

“I flew to Turkey to get the most in-depth checkup of my life,” Elise, 29, a beauty and health tourism influencer from Colorado, told over 8 million viewers in her trending TikTok testimonial.

“It was the greatest thing I’ve ever done for my health and my bank account,” added the blonde, joking that the same exhaustive evaluation would have come with a price tag of “$36,537,951 zillion dollars” if it had been performed in the US.

“The price of everything was jaw-dropping.”

Elise, who ditched her 9-to-5 as a waitress to make six figures selling used books on Amazon in 2022, has saved more than $40,000 by traveling abroad to undergo medical and grooming treatments over the past three years.

She’s in the high number of content creators to tout the abounding boons of healthcare tourism — which has amassed over 29.7 million hashtags online.

In the eye-popping posts, adventures film themselves bidding adieu to America for operating tables in Europe, South America and Asia.

A woman undergoing a health scan.

A staggering 1.2 million Americans visit Mexico for specialized surgeries each year, according to a 2023 report from Medical Tourism Mexico . The findings revealed that penny-pinchers from the US save up to 80% in costs on procedures done south of the border.

But nip/tuck fanatics on the internet seem to have taken a special liking to doctors in Turkey.

Folks have virally jetted off to Istanbul for inexpensive nose jobs, veneers, hair transplants and the “Instagram” look — which consists of a tummy tuck and butt lift, as well as breast and teeth implants.

Elise, however, seemed more interested in the inner workings of her body than in adding outer embellishments.

The millennial, armed with a list of her “mysterious ailments” and an English-speaking translator, saw a slew of doctors at Memorial Hospital Bahçelievler. While at the facility, she underwent X-rays, chest and thyroid ultrasounds, a pap smear, vision testing, bone density scans and internal medicine screenings.

“We went over the 30-plus scans, tests and cancer makers I was tested for in-depth,” said Elise.

“This is why I love health tourism,” she added as commenters praised her money-saving medical hack. “I would never be able to afford this level of care in the United States.”

Kim Kardashian, 42, with the body-scanning machine.

Kim Kardashian opted for a similar health scan in August 2023.

But when the mega mogul, 42, took to social media, boasting about the benefits of her $2,500 checkup via the Prenuvo body scan machine, she was blasted for exhibiting “tone deaf” behaviors.

“Kim, this is for wealthy people. People can’t afford food right now,” spat an unimpressed Instagram user .

“This is SO tone deaf. The majority of people in America could not afford to use this machine,” another barked. “The fact that she’s promoting medical devices that cost thousands is so ridiculous.”

“I’m a fan of the Kardashians,” began an equally perturbed detractor. “But Kim shut the f–k up. Most people can’t afford to go to urgent care.

“This is so f–king tone-deaf.”

spain tour cost

I visited this lesser-known European gem alone — and spent just £300 in a week

I received the dreaded email a week before my flight : ‘Your trip has been cancelled.’

Scrambling to book a holiday only seven days in advance in May, I searched ‘everywhere’ on SkyScanner, until I stopped on a name I recognised. Cádiz, in Spain , had always been on my bucket list and the weather was looking particularly good.

I’ve been on three solo trips so far (Bulgaria, Poland and Spain) and started the tradition accidentally when I was 21-years-old and had no one to go on holiday with.

Now, it’s become an important part of looking after my mental health . My trips have completely cured my social anxiety and I always feel like I’ve had ten therapy sessions injected into my veins when I return.

Andalusia was on my solo travel bucket list as I wanted to go to as many historical sights as possible, and that’s not something my boyfriend or friends always agree with.

Upon arriving in the city, I quickly realised a walk through Cádiz is like travelling in time – a Roman theatre, a grand Gothic Spanish cathedral and Moorish whitewashed homes, all within a five-minute walk.

Cádiz is a 3,000-year-old city  – one of the oldest in Western Europe – with its streets painted by the generations who once lived there, from the Moors to sailors.

Its main sights, from the pristine beach to the bustling market are all just 15 minutes’ walk from each other, so you’re unlikely to need transport.

The thing that shocked me the most, though, was the lack of tourists. To me, it seemed that most travellers were pensioners taking a one-day stop as part of their cruise itinerary. I didn’t see a single Brit under 65.

So if you’re not a fan of big crowds, this lesser-known gem could be the perfect for you.

Cádiz holiday cost breakdown

  • AirBnB for four nights in Cádiz: £272
  • Return flights to Seville: £218
  • AirBnB for two nights in Seville: £140
  • Spending money: £300

Getting to Cádiz , Spain

Getting to the Southern city in the Andalusia province isn’t straightforward, but it’s pretty easy.

You need to fly around three hours to Seville, then get an hour-and-a-half-long coach or train to Cádiz.

I opted for the coach (it was only £11 one way, and saw luxuries I could only wish for in the UK – a TV on the bus, with movies, games, books and even free Internet access! A dream.)

The train is a bit more expensive, averaging £20 to £30 depending on when you visit.

When is the best time to visit Cádiz and how long should you stay?

If you prefer 25°C weather and not sweltering, May would be the best time to go. Cádiz is quite a windy city so it’s generally cooler than other places in Andalusia, like Seville.

If you’re in a rush, you could see Cádiz in 48 hours, but I’d recommend staying for four days so you can see all the city has to offer.

My Ryanair flight was £114 one-way, but I upgraded to include priority and a suitcase as I was going for seven days.

Thankfully, the average flight price to Seville isn’t always three digits. Flights in September are as little as £28 one-way, according to SkyScanner.

Where to stay  in Cádiz, Spain

Whenever I’m on holiday, I prefer staying in an Airbnb as I like to feel like a local. You know, buy fresh ingredients from the local market, whip up a good breakfast and pretend I actually live there.

That’s why I booked a one-bed apartment right in the centre of the old town for £68 a night.

I felt like the main character in a movie, popping into the local bakery before heading to the beach with a book in my hand.

My modest Airbnb was light and airy, tastefully decorated, with large windows that I could fling open and watch the world go by in the streets below.

If a hotel breakfast and daily cleaning is more your thing, there are plenty of hotels tucked in the Old Town and along the beach, but on average it’ll cost you around £150 to £1,000 more, depending on your taste and budget.

Food, drink and what to do in Cádiz , Spain

I spent my days in the best possible way: drinking iced coffee and eating Turròn ice cream (Turròn is a Spanish nougat sweet, and the ice cream tastes like burnt caramel) in the stunning Cafe Royalty , a historic cafe which has been serving Gaditani (that’s people who hail from Cádiz) since 1912.

That was proceeded by a long day of lying down at the beach and shifting between swimming, reading and doing nothing.

Cádiz has multiple beaches, and I found all of them to be clean, sandy and accessible by foot — Playa Santa Maria del Mar (pictured) was my favourite. Plus, at some beaches, I was the only person there.

But sunbathing by the sea is not all Cádiz has to offer. The Andalusian city competes with some of Spain’s best foodie cities for the ultimate gastronomical experience.

Take my word for it and head to Cádiz Central Market first, which sells produce during the day and then turns into a food market with dozens of independent stalls at night.

I ate sushi — yes, not Spanish — made with Tuna freshly caught in Cádiz and bought from the market that day. It was the perfect way to try the local produce without cooking it.

What did I get for £25 at Cádiz Central Market?

  • A kilo of beef tomatoes
  • A kilo of oranges
  • A quarter of a kilo of cherries
  • Fresh sushi made with tuna caught in Cádiz
  • Two nectarines
  • A pair of linen trousers
  • A peach (the salesperson gave it to me for free, to be fair)

There are tons of mouth-watering restaurants too, from locally caught seafood eaten in rustic bars to fine dining. It gets even better – I went to the fancy, expensive restaurants, ordered multiple courses and drinks, and never spent over £35.

I made up my own food tour list after some research and visited Cafe Lazo , a bar that sells the best Gambos al Ajillo (Prawns in oil and garlic.) For something a little less traditional, I headed to The Tapería of Columela , where I ate three dishes (pictured) for £30 in total. Normally you get a starter, main and dessert, but I don’t have much of a sweet tooth – and I was hungry.

The bill included fresh lemonade and still water. It might have been more expensive if I ordered alcohol, but I saved money as I don’t drink.

I loved the food in the restaurants, I really did, but my favourite thing I ate (or should I say drank) was the gazpacho (cold Spanish soup) that I bought by the litre at the supermarket. Paired with some crisps and a sandwich, it was chef’s kiss.

For history and culture, the ruins of the Roman theatre are free to enter, and tickets to the cathedral range between £1.70 to £3.40.

In my opinion, the best cultural thing to do is to walk through the Old Town. I spent hours getting lost in the narrow, cobbled streets – no complaints.

Day trips from Cádiz , Spain

You could easily spend all your time in Cádiz, but the coastal city has great transport links, making it easy to explore all of Andalusia.

I headed to Seville for £11 on the coach. The city boasts the largest historic centre in Europe. I spent the day watching multiple Flamenco shows (thanks to spontaneous street performers), getting lost in the old town, and my favourite, visiting Plaza de España. The landmark representing different regions of Spain made my architecture-loving heart very happy.

For once I didn’t follow a cliché and unfortunately didn’t eat any olives — one for next time.

Other places are a bit closer than Seville, though. Jerez de la Frontera, famous for its sherry wine, Flamenco culture and Moorish fortress, is only a 35-minute bus ride away.

I absolutely loved my week in Cádiz, but next time I’d add also Donana National Park to my itinerary.

The wetlands are home to flamingos, lynxes, glossy ibises and more, and I always love a good wildlife spot. Plus, it helps that it’s only a 44-minute drive away from the city.

My verdict? Cádiz had sun, sand, history and it was pretty quiet. If you’re a lover of good food and budget trips that don’t feel cheap, it’s the best place to go.

Politics latest: Starmer jets off for first NATO summit - and in 'stronger position' than many allies

Sir Keir Starmer is on his way to his first NATO summit as prime minister, hosted in Washington DC. It comes after he sat opposite Rishi Sunak in the first sitting of the new parliament since last week's general election.

Thanks for joining us for a very busy day for the new Labour government - and there's plenty more to come this week.

You can scroll through the page for today's updates, or check our 10pm post for a round-up of Tuesday's most significant news.

We'll be back at 6am with all the latest from Westminster.

The chancellor has revealed plans for a new national wealth fund designed to attract billions in private sector investment.

The new Labour government said it has allocated £7.3bn in additional state funding to support the plan.

The proposals include reforms to the state-owned British Business Bank.

Rachel Reeves met with a nine-strong National Wealth Fund Taskforce at Number 11 Downing Street in order to launch the plans.

The taskforce includes former Bank of England governor Mark Carney, Barclays chief executive officer CS Venkatakrishnan and Aviva chief executive Amanda Blanc.

'Further, faster'

Ms Reeves said the funding will be used to target green and high-growth British industries, stressing there is "no time to waste".

The chancellor added: "We need to go further and faster if we are to fix the foundations of our economy to rebuild Britain and make every part of our country better off."

It's the end of the day - which means it's time for a round-up of the main things you need to know from the Politics Hub.

  • Sir Keir Starmer is en route to Washington DC as you read this for his first NATO summit, where he'll meet world leaders including Joe Biden;
  • Our US correspondent Mark Stoke says he goes on the trip in a "much stronger position" than many of his allies, given his massive election win - we'll have live updates and analysis from the trip starting tomorrow.
  • Back in the UK, parliament has returned and the Speaker re-elected, with the cabinet and shadow cabinet having been sworn in;
  • Sir Keir Starmer  welcomed the diversity of the new parliament in his first Commons speech as PM, while  Rishi Sunak  vowed the Tories would be an "effective and professional" opposition;
  • The return of parliament allowed the Tories to elect the chair of their backbench 1922 Committee , which runs the party's leadership contests;
  • But our political correspondent Darren McCaffrey is getting the sense from Conservatives that the contest may not happen for several months, as the battle for the soul of the party commences.
  • Elsewhere, Health Secretary Wes Streeting says he's "optimistic" after his first meeting with representatives of junior doctors, as he seeks an end to the pay dispute that has caused industrial action;
  • Our political correspondent Tamara Cohen said there may only be "a matter of weeks" to find an agreement before the BMA union holds a vote on holding more strikes.

That's it for our final bulletin of the day - stay with us for more news and analysis through the evening.

A former army chief has warned members of NATO the world is facing "as dangerous a moment as any time that we've had since 1945" as he called on members to invest more into their arms.

General Sir Patrick Sanders, who served as chief of the general staff until last month, told The Times that Russia, China and Iran were the "new axis powers", and a third world war could break out within the next five years if action was not taken.

Arguing the countries posed even more of a threat than the Nazis in 1939, he said: "They are more interdependent and more aligned than the original axis powers were."

But the military expert said the conflict was not a foregone conclusion if NATO members, including the UK, significantly improved their arms.

You can read more from Sky News:

The UK's newest MPs might have spent the last six weeks fighting for a place in parliament - but it can still be a shock to the system once they enter it, according to those familiar with the process.

That's why House of Commons staff have spent months preparing for their arrival, working on everything from buddy schemes to starter packs and photobooks to help them get to grips with the job.

This secret team of helpers is not messing about. In fact, the first contact parliament has with newly elected representatives is at the election count itself.

Read all about how new MPs are prepared for the job here:

After the Conservative Party lost the general election, Rishi Sunak announced he would resign as leader "once the formal arrangements for selecting my successor are in place".

So how could the next leader be selected?

1922 committee

The body that governs Tory party leadership races is their backbench committee of MPs, the 1922 Committee.

Today, Tory MPs elected a new chair - Bob Blackman.

Decisions can now be taken about the timeframe and process of the leadership contest - although it is unclear when that will happen.

Rishi Sunak's role

As it stands, the former PM remains leader of the party and leader of the opposition. He has appointed a shadow cabinet and will fulfil the constitutional requirements of the role - for now.

Mr Sunak could agree to stay as party leader until a permanent successor is selected - in which case he will continue to carry out the opposition leader role, including facing Sir Keir Starmer at PMQs.

But he could choose to step down before the contest is concluded, which he seemed to suggest in his resignation speech, which would mean an interim leader would have to be chosen (that would likely fall to Oliver Dowden, who is the interim deputy leader).

Will the party members have a say?

There appears to be broad consensus among Tory MPs that members should get a vote on who the new party leader should be.

Short vs long

Some Tories have proposed the contest should be short, so the new leader can be in place to challenge the Labour government as soon as possible - particularly when they present their first budget in the autumn.

However, a consensus appears to be emerging that a long leadership contest is the right thing to do to ensure there is full debate on which direction the party should take.

It could mean that nominations for the new leader don't even open for a number of weeks, and then MPs could whittle down the number of candidates - or not, and members could choose between multiple people.

There have been suggestions that the contest should not conclude until after the party's conference in early October, like when David Cameron won back in 2005.

By Mark Kleinman , City editor

The boss of Hakluyt, the corporate intelligence firm, is being lined up for a top business role in Sir Keir Starmer's fledgling Labour administration.

Sky News has learnt that Varun Chandra, who has been Hakluyt's managing partner since 2019, is in advanced talks to join the government.

Sources said on Tuesday that he was likely to take on a senior business liaison role in 10 Downing Street - a role occupied by Lord Petitgas, the former Morgan Stanley banker, in Rishi Sunak's administration.

Like Lord Petitgas, Mr Chandra is an ex-Lehman Brothers banker who went on to establish the regulated business operations of Tony Blair, the former prime minister.

You can read more from Sky News here:

The UK is in a relatively unusual position as Sir Keir Starmer jets off for his first NATO summit as prime minister.

Given the struggles of Joe Biden, Emmanuel Macron, and some other Western leaders, our  US correspondent  Mark Stone   says the prime minister comes to Washington DC looking relatively strong given his enormous election win.

"Politically he is in a much stronger position than many colleagues he will meet," says Mark, who'll be at the summit.

Sir Keir will be among the leaders of the 31 other NATO members for a summit being described "as the biggest event of its kind for three decades" given the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Mark says that sometimes in politics "timing is luck" - "and it's certainly luck for Starmer that so soon after he took office, he is in Washington".

He'll also meet Joe Biden at the White House while he's in town.

That concludes our coverage of tonight's Politics Hub programme - it will be back again from 7pm tomorrow. Stay with us here for more news and analysis through the evening.

Our political correspondent Darren McCaffrey is outside The Spectator's depressingly rainy summer party in London - and it doesn't get more "establishment" than this, he says.

Plenty of senior Tories are there, and so is Nigel Farage.

Darren notes that although the new chairman of the 1922 Committee was confirmed as Bob Blackman tonight - the timing of a Tory leadership contest remains unclear.

"The conversation is not tonight about who should take over the Conservative Party, it's much more about this process," Darren says.

"Whether this leadership contest needs to be sorted as soon as possible - ahead of the party conference - or whether the Conservative Party should do what they decided back in 2005."

That was a really long campaign, one which ended with David Cameron taking the reins.

Darren says the consensus at the party seems to be the Conservatives need to have a think - and they need a long time, certainly until the summer has been and gone.

It means Rishi Sunak could still be leader for months to come.

Housing minister Matthew Pennycook is now asked about  Labour's decision to take "Levelling Up" out of his department's name.

It is now the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

Boris Johnson didn't take well to this decision, accusing the new government of a lack of ambition.

Mr Pennycook says this is "nonsense", adding: "I'd expect nothing less from the former prime minister."

He said the way the Tory government had approached levelling up was a "gimmick", with communities "held back" and "forced to bid" for "small pots of money" from Whitehall.

"We are taking a whole government approach to regional inequality," says the minister.

"It's got to run through everything we do, so the ambition remains the problem, if you like. The diagnosis was right.

"We want to get back to basics."
