Though the cultures vary, both sides of the island share beautiful beaches, excellent dining opportunities, and island adventures. Contact your Liberty Travel vacation consultant, and stay at an all-inclusive resort, enjoy the beach, or book a day trip across the island.

What a wonderful way to see the birds and as a benefit hear some of the history of the island. Binkie is a great guide and took us to places that we would not have found on our own, he knew where to go to see the birds. We saw 30 different types of birds and a few that were rare sightings at the time we were there. I would highly encourage all birders to take this tour!

Our guide made the tour a great experience for everyone! We all like getting off of the beaten path and not just hitting the “tourist” sites. Truly worth every minute !!!

Having visited St Maarten several times, we wanted an interesting mellow land-based experience, and chose the History Tour: excellent choice. We enjoyed a non-commercial day away from the crowds, learning about the island and checking out places we never would have found on our own. We highly recommend this ‘road less traveled’ quality-driven experience.

Lots of Joy

We, Nascha Kagie and Werner van de Zilver, met David Botha and Ilja Botha while enjoying quality time with friends on our beautiful island of St.Martin. We discovered a mutual love for all that is St.Martin. When the time came that Ilja and David decided to go on new adventures, the choice to continue Seagrape Tours as the quality eco tour company it is, was made with lots of joy and love. As per January 2021 Seagrape Tours has changed ownership from Ilja and David to Nascha and Werner.

We are both born in the Netherlands. Nascha has lived and went to school on St Maarten as a young child. As a teen and young adult she lived, went to school and started working in the Netherlands. Werner lived, went to school and started working in the Netherlands. Being together since 1997, we  went on an adventure journey through the Caribbean for several months in 2003 after which we decided to settle on Aruba. We lived on Aruba for 8 years before deciding to go back home, to the Friendly Island of St Martin. We  returned home to our beautiful island in 2011.

Our passion is for the beauty of all which our beautiful St Maarten / St Martin had, has and will have. Our passion is for our island, culture and people. By showing and telling others about St Maarten / St Martin’s fragile natural beauty in a responsible way, We are hoping to create more awareness for conservation.

David Botha

David and Ilja have met while volunteering on a kibbutz in Israel many moons ago. In 2008 they changed their steady lives in The Netherlands by quitting their jobs and traveling around the world for a year.

In 2009 they decided to settle in one of their favorite countries: The Friendly Island of St Maarten. Since then their two lovely daughters were born – Zimri and Zenzi – and most recently in 2014, their own eco tour company Seagrape Tours saw light.

In 2021 they decided to take on a new challenge in the Netherlands.

My family and I had the pleasure of taking this tour at the beginning of our trip to St. Martin. We always enjoy learning a bit of the history of the places we visit. Nascha was an excellent teacher – clearly knowledgeable and passionate about St. Maarten and its people. This is a “must do” if you want to learn a bit about this wonderful island nation.

The students and staff really enjoyed themselves and we really appreciate the work that you all did! Thank you for everything!!! I can’t tell you how much we appreciate all of your kindness and understanding (customized educational agricultural, nature and hiking tour).

A+ World Academy, international boarding school aboard the tallship Sørlandet, Group of 60 students

The difference in all the various tours is the sincerity of the guide and the small details. We have taken many tours in our travels and this tour was certainly one of our most enjoyable.

Visitor from Vancouver

Our tour guide Nascha took me, my sister and my 10 year old daughter on a great trip to visit different gallery’s and local artists on the island. She took all the time to let us ask questions and listen to the stories of the artists and let us experience a great variety of work. So thank you Nascha for this great tour. We could not leave without purchasing some art to keep the memory of this day even more alive.

Island of St. Martin | All-Inclusive

Click to Call

Known as Saint Martin to the French and Sint Maarten to the Dutch, this friendly island is the smallest island in the world and is inhabited and divided between two nations - France and the Netherlands.

It is home to beautiful beaches, lively nightlife, casinos, shopping, and its locally produced rum - making it a wonderful place to visit.

Soak Up the Atmosphere

The French-Dutch island of St. Martin offers visitors everything you could hope for from a small Caribbean island from beautiful white sandy beaches, exquisite dining options, tourist attractions, boat trips in crystal clear waters, and much more.

Visiting both sides of the island will allow you to explore everything it has to offer and enjoy the island's rich history.

Philipsburg

St. Martin Vacation, Street Art Philipsburg

As the capital of the Dutch side of Sint Maarten, Philipsburg has lots to see and do.

As well as a great collection of beautiful white-sand beaches, you can enjoy some retail therapy in the shopping street, a great selection of food and drink at the port, and a multitude of tourist attractions - such as the St. Maarten Zoo and Museum.

Marigot is the main town and capital of the French side of St. Martin. It's home to a vibrant blend of French and Caribbean culture, as well as a great selection of boutiques and shops selling everything from clothing and cosmetics, to jewelry and souvenirs.

There are fabulous dining options in the bistros and restaurants of Marigot, and you should make a point of experiencing the bustling Marigot Market. The best days to visit the market are Wednesday and Saturday it's a great place to find locally sourced food, drink, and crafts.

Fort Louis overlooks Marigot Bay and gives visitors the opportunity to explore some of the history this fascinating island has to offer.

SXM Music Festival

St. Martin Vacation, SXM Music Festival

Make the most of the festive nightlife on the Caribbean Island of Saint Martin, thanks to the SXM Music Festival.

The five-day-long celebration takes place at various locations in Saint Martin, including open-air clubs, beaches, jungles, villas, and boats - it's a must-visit for tourists!

St. Maarten Heineken Regatta

St. Martin Vacation, Yacht, St. Maarten Heineken Regatta

The St. Maarten Heineken Regatta is the perfect event for boating fanatics. The four-day event sees hundreds of sailboats compete.

The event is also the Caribbeans' first "clean Regatta" with the banning of styrofoam products and straws, biodegradable products being used, recycling stations set up, paperless management of the event, and a cleanup event that rewards people for collecting garbage.

Check Out the Beaches

Anyone visiting Saint Martin and Sint Maarten (the French and Dutch sides of the island) will be rewarded with beautiful Caribbean beaches to relax and enjoy the sun on. Here are some of the most popular beaches located on the island;

Simpson Bay Beach

Simpson Bay beach is located on the Dutch side of the island on the southwestern shore close to the Princess Juliana International Airport.

This long beach tends to remain uncrowded giving visitors beautiful views across the Caribbean Sea.

Great Bay Beach

Great Bay Beach is located in Philipsburg, Sint Maarten's capital, and offers a two-mile stretch of stunning white sands.

Explore the boardwalk and its countless shops and businesses, or stop at one of the many bars and restaurants to enjoy sea-view dining.

Beach bars make sure you are well-catered for on the sand with refreshments, loungers, and other amenities.

Watch the cruise ships float by, enjoy the sun, or go for a swim at this fantastic beach in the heart of Dutch Sint Maarten.

St. Martin Vacation, Resort View, Divi Little Bay Beach Resort

Orient Beach is found on the northeastern shore of French Saint-Martin and is probably the most famous beach on the island and boasts state-of-the-art amenities.

Sun worshippers will be able to enjoy the beach sun loungers, and swimmers will find the waters great for swimming thanks to the protection afforded by the reef of Green Key.

This is one of the more lively beaches because it is so accessible, and the restaurants, bars, and cafes ensure there is a buzz long into the night.

If you are looking for a more active beach experience, you will be able to rent watersports equipment here too.

It is worth noting that the south end of the beach is known for being popular among naturists, so, depending on your preferences, you may want to stick to other areas.

Why Go To St. Martin - St. Maarten

If you associate the Caribbean with a laid-back atmosphere, a tranquil beach and a quiet sunset, then you haven't been to feisty St. Martin and St. Maarten. What's the best part of visiting this dual-governed island? You can get a taste of two distinct, lively cultures all for the price of one vacation. Like much of the Caribbean, the island was hit hard by Hurricane Irma in 2017. Make sure you call or check the websites of any businesses you plan to visit in advance to check on their status. The 37-square-mile dot is popular with travelers who like to eat well, party hard and shop duty-free in between trips to the beach. The north side, St. Martin, is controlled by the French government. It's the home of the island's tastiest restaurants and party beaches. Whereas cosmopolitan St. Maarten shelters the most animated casinos, bars and clubs. A territory of the Netherlands Antilles, St. Maarten takes up the southern 16 square miles.

But for all the excitement, St. Martin and St. Maarten still foster a stress-free vibe – starting out with how easily you can pass between both sides of the island. So catch a few morning rays on a quiet Dutch-side beach; later, take a leisurely afternoon stroll through a French-side mountain. You'll be more than primed to sneak back over the border for a night in the casinos.

St. Martin - St. Maarten Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit St. Martin and St. Maarten is May and June or between November and mid-December. These select weeks are times when hotels advertise their best rates. The island's weather is pleasant year-round, but these are times when rain showers are less likely. Summer and early fall are not good for a vacation; many hotels close in this offseason and there's a chance of hurricanes. Also avoid visiting in winter and early spring (mid-December to April) if you can. That's when St. Martin and St. Maarten milks its wealthy vacationers.

Weather in St. Martin - St. Maarten

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

The official language In St. Martin it's French. Meanwhile, St. Maarten's official language is both Dutch and English. Confused yet? Don't worry – English is widely spoken throughout.

How to say "watch out" in Dutch You should definitely go to Maho Bay to see a few 747s land at the neighboring Princess Juliana International Airport. But  uitkijken ! This can be a scary, noisy and windy experience.

How to say "Live and Let Live" in French St. Martin's beaches are well-known for their  vivre et laisser vivre  philosophy on swimsuits (in other words, expect to see a lot of bare chests and bottoms).

How to Save Money in St. Martin - St. Maarten

Don't tip extra  You'll see some restaurants have put an extra 15-percent "tax" on the bill that the wait staff might neglect to tell you is their service charge. Don't tip extra unless your service was really exceptional.

Email, don't phone  Making a call from the French side to the Dutch side, and vice versa, is considered an international call. Some businesses will have two numbers (to help you avoid this particular nuisance), but if not, attempt to make restaurant reservations and book island tours by email.

Take the bus  Things move at a more leisurely pace in the Caribbean, so take advantage of that by taking the bus to the top tourist sites. There's no set schedule for drop-off and pick-ups, but you'll get where you want to go for about $1.50 one-way.

Culture & Customs

A true "Tale of Two Cities,"   the island of St. Martin and St. Maarten is proud of its dual heritage and customs. There is no physical border between the French and Dutch territories and people and goods may travel freely between both sides of the island. The Dutch side's official currency is the Netherlands Antillean guilder (ANG) while the official currency of the French side is the euro (EUR). However, the United States dollar is widely accepted, as are most major credit cards.

What to Eat

Bring your appetite to St. Martin/St. Maarten, because you'll most assuredly put it to good use. Fresh seafood is often the star of many menus here (it is an island, after all), but there is a rich variety of cuisines to be found, from high-end French to Lebanese to Italian to traditional barbecue. Typical Creole dishes often include conch, goat and oxtail. You'll also want to try the island's national liqueur, Guavaberry, made from rum, cane sugar and local, wild guavaberries. A bottle also makes a great souvenir to take home.

Some visitors say the island's dining is some of the best in the Caribbean, especially in the Grand Case area on the French side. Bistrot Caraibes in Grand Case consistently earns rave reviews from diners, who praise both its food and service. The restaurant's signature dish is lobster, a big favorite with repeat diners. La Villa Restaurant , another Grand Case mainstay, is equally praised for its French-Caribbean menu and exceptional service.

If you're looking for a casual meal, try one of the  lolos , or open-air restaurants on the beach (outdoor cooking on large barbecues is very popular here). In the evening, live music is often a staple at these local spots. Recent travelers especially enjoyed the bars and grills along Simpson Bay. The Palms was a particular favorite thanks to its Caribbean and international menu. Popular dishes include the jerk chicken and curry chicken. Izi Ristorant Italiano was also a hit for those passing through Simpson Bay for its variety of Italian classics.

The dual-nation island is just as safe as other island getaways. Crowds are denser in St. Maarten, however, so travelers should exercise common sense when moving around the tourist areas; leave your valuables at home, and only carry small bills. St. Martin and St. Maarten's visitors should also be mindful of the jet blast when watching the planes take off and land at  Maho Bay . Blasts of sand can be powerful depending on where you're standing, and spectators should prepare by bringing a brimmed hat and umbrella, in addition to plenty of sunscreen (the strong winds can make it hard to determine when you're sunburned). For that matter, sunscreen and a hat should always be worn, since the island is located between the Tropic of Cancer and the Equator, receiving the full force of the sun. A good pair of sunglasses is also a good idea.

Getting Around St. Martin - St. Maarten

The best way to get around St. Martin and St. Maarten is in a rental car. But really, outside of walking, just about any means of navigating between the French and Dutch sides of the island is manageable. Having a car will allow you more mobility and you'll find reasonable rental rates. Agencies are clustered on the outskirts of Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM), located in St. Maarten. Unfortunately, traffic can be pretty heinous on both sides. The island buses also cater to tourists and are fairly cheap to ride. If you don't like the idea of waiting on a bus, consider splurging on a taxi. And if you're feeling adventurous you might want to use a scooter; there's nothing like feeling the sea breeze in your hair – ahem, helmet.

Entry & Exit Requirements

You can travel freely between this island's French and the Dutch sides, but you will need to present a passport that has at least six months remaining validity (for the French side) when you first arrive. A valid passport is all that is required to enter the Dutch side. You might also be asked to present your return ticket, proof of sufficient funds for your trip and proof of lodging. For more information on customs, visit the U.S. State Department's  for information on St. Martin here and for St. Maarten here . Tourist visas are not required.

Marigot Harbor sits on the French side of the island.

4 Best St. Martin All-Inclusive Resorts

Part of the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean Sea, St. Martin is a beautiful island with a few all-inclusive resort options. It actually comprises two separate countries. The north side is controlled by the French government, and the south, known as St. Maarten , is a territory of the Netherlands Antilles.

The island is filled with busy, lavish resort beaches and gorgeous secluded coves, and it is known for its bustling nightlife, great shopping opportunities (especially for jewelry and liquor) as well as amazing fusion cuisine. But probably the best thing about visiting this exotic paradise is the chance to get a taste of two distinct, lively cultures for the price of one vacation.

St. Martin All-Inclusive Resorts: Pros & Cons of Going All-Inclusive

Whether you decide to have an all-inclusive holiday or you prefer planning every day of your escape is your choice. There are, however, a few things to think of before making this decision.

First of all, there are many all-inclusive resort types, so all kinds of travelers are promised satisfaction. Also, many of them offer special packages for honeymoons, weddings , or other celebrations. If you want to avoid noise and kids, there are also many resorts specially created for adults or couples, so your peace of mind can be safe.

One of the best things about choosing an all-inclusive resort is having all the food and drinks included. So, you don’t have to spend extra money or wander around looking for the best restaurants and risk ending up in tourist traps.

But, if you like sampling native foods and drinks, an all-inclusive vacation might not be the best, unless the resort you choose promises to offer local cuisine experiences.

Another great thing about all-inclusive packages is that they offer visitors the chance to enjoy amazing activities all over the resort. Whether you are a big fan of yoga on the beach, you want to join dance classes by the pool, or adventure in thrilling hikes and water sports, you have something exciting to do from the moment you wake up.

st martin island travel agencies

Keep in mind, however, that the great number of activities can also be annoying for people who want tranquility instead of bumping into other tourists who are roaming around. Also, all-inclusive vacations can be very economical. But, to make sure you don’t go over your budget, carefully read all the fine print and know what is included and what is not.

When to Visit St. Martin

St. Martin is blessed with pleasant weather year-round, but there are times when rain showers are more frequent. With a big chance of hurricanes and many hotels closed, summer and early fall are considered offseason. Winter and early spring, from mid-December to April, are popular months among wealthy travelers, so, unless you are ready to pay more than usual, avoid these months.

The best time to visit St. Martin and St. Maarten is between November and mid-December or May and June when the weather is perfect, and hotels have their best rates and offers.

st martin island travel agencies

Is St. Martin Safe?

Being aware of the safety recommendations is mandatory, no matter where you plan to go. Fortunately, this gorgeous dual-nation island is quite safe, like many other Caribbean islands .

Just keep in mind that St. Maarten is a lot busier, with denser crowds of visitors. So, when moving around the tourist areas, be extra careful, leave your valuables at the hotel, and try to carry only small bills.

Also, the island is located between the Tropic of Cancer and the Equator, receiving the full force of the sun. So, invest in a good pair of sunglasses and always use sunscreen.

St. Martin is a fantastic option for anyone looking for a tropical vacation or honeymoon. Not only does it have amazing resorts, but it also offers a look at two different nations and cultures. And the beach is never far away! If you’re ready to plan a trip here, feel free to reach out to one of our trusted travel advisors !

Morning Rundown: What Trump's immunity ruling means for future presidents, Cat. 5 Hurricane Beryl breaks startling record, trans runner Nikki Hiltz heads to the Olympics

Beryl becomes 'extremely dangerous' Category 4 hurricane expected to bring life-threatening conditions to Caribbean

Hurricane Beryl has become an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 storm as it inches closer to the Windward Islands, bringing life-threatening winds and storm surge to the Caribbean, the National Hurricane Center said Sunday.

Beryl expanded its strength for two days, reaching Category 4 strength on a scale of 5 on Sunday before leveling off, the center said in a late-afternoon advisory.

With sustained winds of 130 mph, the storm was likely to be a destructive force through the early week as it aimed for a possible clash with Mexico's Yucatán peninsula around next weekend, according to the hurricane center.

"Fluctuations in strength are common in major hurricanes in conducive environments, and it is expected that Beryl will also fluctuate in strength for the next day or so," the center said in a separate forecast discussion. "There is high confidence that Beryl will remain an extremely dangerous hurricane through landfall in the Windward Islands."

Its center is expected to move across the Windward Islands early Monday, with hurricane conditions, including heavy rain, expected Sunday evening, the agency said.

A strengthening Tropical Storm Beryl on NOAA satellite on Saturday morning.

The Windward Islands include St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Martinique. As of Sunday night, Beryl was about 200 miles southeast of Barbados with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph. It was moving northwest at around 18 mph.

A U.S. hurricane warning is in effect for Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Tobago, where hurricane conditions are possible starting early Monday.

The government of Barbados began opening emergency shelters Sunday evening and ordered all businesses to close by 7 p.m. The Barbados Water Authority asked residents to store potable water as it would shut down water lines across the island Sunday night as a precaution, according to a statement.

The Barbados government said the center of the hurricane would travel 75 to 80 miles south of Barbados sometime Monday morning.

Government forecasters said the hurricane could pulse with renewed strength as it passes beneath Barbados, with winds associated with the storm projected to reach near 145 mph.

Flash flooding and hurricane-force winds are likely, the government said. Barbados officials also warned of a low pressure system behind Beryl that could become a tropical depression and affect the country Wednesday if it continues apace.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for Martinique, and tropical storm watches are in effect for Dominica and Trinidad, which could all experience tropical storm conditions Sunday night.

“Potentially catastrophic wind damage is expected where the eyewall of Beryl moves through portions of the Windward Islands, with the highest risk of the core in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada,” the hurricane center said.

Life-threatening storm surges may raise water levels by 6 to 9 feet above normal tide levels in the hurricane watch areas and bring destructive waves to the coast.

Three to 6 inches of rain is possible across Barbados and the Windward Islands on Sunday into Monday, which may cause flooding in some areas. Up to 10 inches of rain is possible in some areas, especially in the Grenadines.

St. Lucia Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre announced a national shutdown as a result of the hurricane warning that will go into effect Sunday 8:30 p.m. local time. He did not say when it will be lifted. Schools will remain closed Monday, and “employers are expected to cooperate,” he said.

In a Facebook post, the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority asked the public to “remain indoors and away from glass windows once tropical hurricane-force winds affect the area.”

“All persons should avoid entering the ocean. Failure to comply with this request puts human lives at risk, including those of our first responders,” the board said. The board also encouraged tourists to contact their airlines to schedule flights home.

The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force has canceled all police leave in preparation for Beryl.

“All officers are requested to report to the nearest police station by 6:00 p.m. today, Sunday, June 30, 2024,” it s a id on Fa cebook .

In Grenada, a state of emergency will go into effect at 7 p.m. Sunday and remain for a week, “unless earlier revoked,” Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell said at a briefing.

The country’s National Disaster Management Agency encouraged the public to secure three days of nonperishable food and water as Beryl makes impact. Those in areas susceptible to storm surge were encouraged to move to one of the shelters opened across Grenada.

Mitchell warned the public that “this is not a drill.”

“We need to be calm, we need to pray, but most importantly we need to prepare,” Mitchell said.

All police leave has also been canceled in Grenada, and officers were asked to return to work, according to Mitchell.

Caribbean braces for Hurricane Beryl as Category 3 storm approaches

Beryl is expected to slam the Lesser Antilles with potential “life-threatening” impact, but residents and tourists were cautiously optimistic Sunday.

Hurricane Beryl was approaching the Caribbean with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph early Monday — leading islanders to prepare for the violent Category 3 storm to strike later in the morning.

The National Hurricane Center downgraded Beryl from a Category 4 in its 2 a.m. Monday update .

Beryl was expected to move across the Windward Islands on Monday morning and through the southeastern and central Caribbean Sea late Monday through Wednesday, the Hurricane Center said. “Life-threatening” winds and storm surge were also expected early Monday.

Hurricane warnings have been issued for Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadine Islands, Grenada and Tobago, while tropical storm advisories stretched as far north as the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The Hurricane Center is expecting a storm surge of 6 to 9 feet, as well as 3 to 6 inches of rain.

By late Sunday, much of the region had shut down public life, closing storefronts and requiring residents and tourists to take shelter indoors.

Researchers have been warning for months that the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season could be one for the record books, and now it is: There is no precedent for a storm to intensify this quickly, nor reach this strength, in this part of the ocean in June. Records date from 1851.

Grenada entered a state of emergency Sunday evening as a precaution for the storm charging its way, and Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell urged the island’s 125,000 residents to stay home. St. Lucian Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre said a national shutdown in the country of about 170,000 would begin at 8:30 p.m. Sunday. The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Meteorological Service issued a flash-flood warning to its 100,000 residents.

In Bridgetown, the Barbadian capital, Doriel Gill-Skinner spent Sunday telling others about a neighborhood shelter that’s available for those that need it, she told The Washington Post. The storm wasn’t expected to hit the island for several hours, but by early afternoon she had prepared her grab-and-go bag of nonperishable food items, water and a change of clothes, and busied herself by readying her neighbors.

“The mood in the community is calm and confident,” she said. “We are taking the storm seriously and are prepared for it.”

At midday Sunday, Michael Tiller was looking at blue skies and calm, clear water from the patio of a rented vacation home in Barbados. “You can’t really tell there’s a hurricane coming,” the Michigan resident said. “It’s a really beautiful day out here.”

Tiller plans to hunker down as soon as the winds pick up. The property managers of the home he is sharing with his family for the week boarded up the windows and glass doors earlier Sunday. The family is bracing for strong winds and power outages, but Tiller said he isn’t too concerned. The family is planning to return to the United States on Wednesday.

Nauman Khan, visiting from Toronto, spent most of Sunday exploring Barbados with his wife and two children. Like Tiller, Khan said there was little to suggest that a major storm was on its way.

“It’s been mostly sunny the whole day, with a slight breeze — a quintessentially Barbadian day,” Khan said.

But the winds began picking up in the late afternoon, and his resort on the southern end of the island told guests that the on-site restaurant would stop dine-in services. Customers were asked to spend the remainder of the evening in their rooms.

“I haven’t seen any panic,” Khan said. “The DJ is still playing. The bar is still open.”

Over the weekend, Beryl strengthened quickly. It went from a tropical storm to a Category 3 hurricane in 36 hours and intensified by 75 mph during that time. According to Sam Lillo, a researcher at DTN Weather, that level of rapid intensification has never happened in June and has happened only twice in July.

There is a firm link between rapid intensification — the strengthening of hurricanes — and human-induced climate change. Ocean waters are running 3 or 4 degrees above average, reminiscent of August rather than June.

Before now, the Atlantic had only seen two major hurricanes, rated Category 3 or higher, in June — Audrey in 1957 and Alma in 1966. The Atlantic’s Main Development Region, between northern South America and Africa, was believed to be inhospitable to major hurricanes during June — until now.

In the center of that path, Grenadians were preparing for the worst and hoping to avoid a repeat of 2004’s Hurricane Ivan, which killed at least 37 people and damaged 90 percent of homes on the island.

Kitaka Chakumba Mawuto recalled that during that storm, he and his family watched the roof fly off their home before they rushed to a neighbor’s house.

“It was traumatizing, but it brought us together,” said Mawuto, 30. His family had no idea what they were in for during Ivan, but he is better prepared now. He hopes authorities are, too, he said.

Several islands north, in St. Lucia, Rhyesa Joseph said Sunday that she has prepared as much as she can, ensuring all her electronics are charged and setting aside essentials. She’s more worried about the safety of others on the 28-mile-long island and what the storm will leave behind, she said.

“I am very concerned about the economic implications of the hurricane, the damage to infrastructure, the food insecurity it may cause,” Joseph said. “We know what has happened to our neighbors because of hurricanes, and we ourselves have experienced Hurricane Tomas and other storms.” Hurricane Tomas killed at least eight people in the Windward Islands before killing 35 more in Haiti over about a week in 2010. It caused about $336 million of damage in St. Lucia.

Still, on Sunday afternoon, Joseph said it was “a quintessentially beautiful day,” and the weather was sunny and hot.

“Literally the calm before the storm,” she said.

Jiselle Lee contributed to this report.
