This Artificially Intelligent Pin Wants to Free You From Your Phone

The $700 Ai Pin, funded by OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Microsoft, can be helpful — until it struggles with tasks like doing math and crafting sandwich recipes.

On a recent afternoon, I held a bagel in front of me and said: “Look and tell me if this is healthy.”

A monotone voice responded that the bagel was unhealthy because it was high in carbohydrates, which could contribute to weight gain.

I wasn’t talking to a tech bro obsessed with the ketogenic diet. This was the Ai Pin, a $700 tiny computer featuring a virtual assistant pulling data from OpenAI (the research firm behind the ChatGPT chatbot), Google, Microsoft and others to answer questions and perform tasks.

Shaped like a lapel pin that may be a throwback to “Star Trek,” it attaches to your clothing with magnets and is supposed to offload tasks you would normally do with a smartphone, like taking notes, searching the web and shooting photos. Instead of a screen, the pin shines a green laser on your hand to show text. The device includes a camera, speaker and cellular connection.

The novel design of the Ai Pin, which was made by the start-up Humane, generated buzz when it was unveiled late last year. Sam Altman, OpenAI’s chief executive, and companies including Microsoft and Salesforce have placed a bold bet — to the tune of $240 million in funding for Humane — that artificially intelligent hardware like the Ai Pin will become the next big thing after the smartphone. (The New York Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft last year for using copyrighted news articles without permission to train chatbots.)

Humane said its goal with the Ai Pin was to offer technology that would help people avoid screens and maintain eye contact.

  • Brian Chen asks the Humane Ai Pin about a bagel.
  • Brian Chen asks the Humane Ai Pin what the square root of 49 is.
  • Brian Chen asks the Humane Ai Pin to translate some common travel phrases into Indonesian.

I liked the chic aesthetic and concept of the pin. It was occasionally helpful, like when it suggested items to pack for my recent trip to Hawaii. But as I wore it for two weeks, it presented glaring flaws. Often, its responses were off-putting, like with the bagel, or wrong, like when it said the square root of 49 was 49. Also, The Times’s photo shoot of the Ai Pin ended prematurely when the device overheated and shut down.

I wouldn’t pay $700 for this pin — let alone the $24-a-month subscription required to use its data services, including its T-Mobile cellular plan. But consider my curiosity piqued.

Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, Humane’s husband-and-wife founders, who worked at Apple, said updates issued through its servers would address many of the glitches I had encountered, including heat issues and shoddy math.

“It’s a journey, and we are just at the start,” Ms. Bongiorno said. “The first version is never the entirety of the vision.”

Here’s how my experience wearing the Ai Pin went.

Getting Started

Since the Ai Pin lacks a screen, users set up their accounts and other settings on Humane’s website. To unlock the device with a passcode, hold out your hand to project a green laser onto your palm. Pulling your hand outward increases the number while pulling it inward decreases it, and you select each digit by pinching two fingers on the same hand.

The laser can be used to tweak other settings, like connecting to a Wi-Fi network, and it can show a text transcription of the virtual assistant’s answers. Humane said the laser was intended to be used for no longer than nine minutes, but for me, it lasted about three before the Ai Pin complained it was too hot and shut down.

Several pieces of boxy equipment, in white, black and pink, related to the Ai Pin.

A Virtual Assistant

Beyond unlocking the pin with the laser, you’ll control the Ai Pin mostly with finger taps and your voice. The advantage of pinning a virtual assistant to my shirt became clear when I was moving around and thinking about the many things I had to do.

With one finger held down on the Ai Pin, I could summon the assistant and ask it to add tasks to my to-do list. This feature shined when I was packing for my vacation to Hawaii and adding items to my packing list, including T-shirts and swim trunks. When I asked the pin to suggest other items to pack for my trip there, it recommended a hat, sunscreen and other relevant items. Very cool.

However, the Ai Pin was less helpful in some other situations. When I was in Hawaii last week, I struggled to remember the name of a food truck near my hotel serving loco moco, so I asked the assistant to look it up for me. It said no such food truck could be found, leading me to search on my phone instead.

A Language Interpreter

An important feature on the Ai Pin is the ability to translate a conversation into another language in real time. With one finger held down on the pin, I could set a language to translate to, such as Mandarin. When I held two fingers down on the pin and spoke a phrase in English, the Ai Pin said it in Mandarin, and vice versa.

I tested this with several other languages, including Spanish, French and Indonesian. I confirmed that the interpreter was usually correct, though with converting English into Mandarin, it incorrectly translated “good morning” into “da jia hao,” which means “hello, everyone.”

Would You Look at That?

Humane is including a feature called Vision on the Ai Pin, which is labeled “beta” to signal that it is unfinished. The device uses its camera and A.I. to analyze your surroundings and give information about what you are looking at. This is what led to my quirky experience with a bagel, which only got weirder when I asked more questions.

I asked the pin how to make the bagel more delicious, and it proceeded to explain how to make bagels from scratch. Eventually, I asked the pin to come up with suggestions for sandwiches that could be made with the bagel. It generated a long list of ideas, including chickpea salad sandwiches, sloppy Joes and cucumber sandwiches with green chutney.

On vacation, I visited a botanical garden and asked the pin to identify a flower. “The flower is yellow with red stripes on the inside,” the pin said. This was correct, but it didn’t answer my question.

“It’s a Solandra maxima,” my wife said. She had taken a photo of the flower with her phone and uploaded it into a Google Images search. I felt sheepish.

Humane said it was working constantly to improve the Vision feature.

The Phone Stuff

Similar to a smartphone, the Ai Pin has its own phone number and cellular data connection to place phone calls and play music, and its camera can be used to shoot photos and videos.

Here is where the Ai Pin especially underdelivered. For something designed to make you spend less time on your phone, it isn’t better than a smartphone at any of those tasks. Photos and videos taken with the camera look poorly lit and blurry. To place a phone call, you can ask the assistant to call someone in your address book, but to dial a new number, you dictate the digits. For music, the device currently works only with Tidal, an unpopular music streaming service.

Ms. Bongiorno said the Ai Pin let her take more candid photos without a screen getting in the way. But to me, this was a disadvantage. Without a viewfinder, photos looked poorly framed.

Bottom Line

While the Ai Pin was occasionally useful and impressive, it was wrong, unhelpful or inefficient enough times to drive me back to my phone.

Gary Marcus, an A.I. entrepreneur, said the mistakes the Ai Pin made, like with the bagel, were the result of so-called hallucinations , the tendency for A.I. to guess and make things up when it can’t find the right answer. That’s a problem that remains unsolved in many A.I. technologies including ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

Ms. Bongiorno acknowledged that hallucinations were happening with Gemini, the technology behind the Ai Pin’s Vision feature. She added that the technology would improve rapidly with user feedback and that the company had already finessed the pin’s reaction to bagels.

Mr. Marcus said no company yet had A.I. technology that was sophisticated enough to make a virtual assistant answer questions reliably.

“It’s almost like a broken watch being right twice a day,” he said. “It’s right some of the time, but you don’t know which part of the time, and that greatly diminishes its value.”

Yet there is a kernel of an idea worth preserving. I liked having an assistant on my shirt when it was actually helpful. I’ll pin my hopes on future iterations of the product — perhaps a cheaper one that lacks a camera and a laser.

An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that OpenAI was an investor in Humane. Sam Altman, OpenAI’s chief executive, made a personal investment.

Humane AI Pin review roundup: an undercooked flop that's way ahead of its time

T he Humane AI Pin is a fascinating little device for gadget fans. If you missed its reveal in November 2023 , it's a tiny wearable computer with a built-in AI assistant, camera, and a little projector that blasts its UI onto your hand. Unfortunately, it's also pretty terrible, according to the internet's first reviews, which have landed in the past few days.

It's rare for tech reviews, from both traditional media and YouTubers, to be so unanimous in their criticism of a much-hyped product. "The worst product I've ever reviewed... for now" concluded Marques Brownlee. Ouch. Meanwhile, Engadget branded it "the solution to none of technology's problems", while The Verge simply said that the AI Pin was "not even close".

Naturally, these scathing verdicts create some added fascination about a $699 device that also requires a $ 24-a-month subscription. Yet few of the reviews think the AI Pin is completely without merit. Many praise its hardware design, which is solid aluminum and clips to your chest thanks to a magnetic 'battery booster' that goes inside your clothing. On the few occasions that it did work seamlessly, it also gave reviewers a little glimpse of a refreshingly screen-less future.

But beyond the specific features – many of which don't seem to work reliably enough yet – the most interesting thing about these Humane AI Pin reviews is their broad conclusions about AI gadgets. In short, our phones aren't going anywhere for a long time, and, as Bloomberg's review concluded, "the AI device revolution isn't going to kill the smartphone". We haven't yet reviewed the Rabbit R1 , but that will probably hold true for a while yet.

This doesn't mean that the Humane AI Pin isn't a fascinating (if deeply flawed device) today. Here are all of the internet's thoughts on the boldest tech launch since the Apple Vision Pro ...

Humane AI Pin: the key reviews

Marques brownlee: "the worst product i've ever reviewed...for now".

Despite the scathing headline, Marques Brownlee's report on his time with the AI Pin is typically fair and even-handed. Unfortunately, he simply couldn't find many positives, aside from the design. "The build of this thing is actually impressive", he says of the solid, aluminum gadget. Unfortunately, it's also "bad at almost everything it does".

That list includes answering your voice queries, where it's either painfully slow (given most requests go to the cloud) or "just wrong all the time". The battery life was also strangely inconsistent, and the device was worryingly warm a lot of time. But the fundamental issue, a theme across most of the reviews, is that everything the AI Pin does, a "modern smartphone does better and faster". Without connecting to your smartphone or offering any apps, the AI Pin is strangely adrift.

  • Solid build quality
  • Translation feature has promise
  • Impressive engineering
  • Too slow at giving answers
  • Poor, inconsistent battery life
  • Overheating issues
  • Wrong all the time

Mrwhosetheboss: "It's not good"

Tech YouTuber Arun Maini, AKA Mrwhosetheboss, was clearly conflicted in his review between the "small twinges of something magical" he could see in the Humane AI Pin and the unworkable reality of using it. "As of right now, the Human Pin is an incredibly poor proposition" he concluded.

As other reviews noted, it all goes downhill after you see the hardware. The price (which works out at $1,700 over two years, when you factor in the subscription, accessories, and taxes), slow responses to voice requests, lack of integration with existing phone apps, and impractical projector interface were all black marks.

As Maini notes, a more sensible setup would surely be for the AI Pin to connect to your phone – like the best smartwatches – rather than act as a standalone device. All of this led him to conclude that he can't see "a single angle from which it makes sense".

  • Construction is top-notch
  • No wake words needed
  • Vision feature is satisfying
  • Too expensive
  • Requests take too long
  • Doesn't talk to existing apps
  • Projector not bright enough

CNET: "Futuristic but frustrating"

CNET's hands-on review of the AI Pin contains a nice nod to the Star Trek Communicator badge that the pin is seemingly inspired by, but that's one of the few moments of levity in a review that cautions, you "definitely not" consider buying it in its current form.

The video is more of a whistlestop tour of the AI Pin's features – including the built-in camera for taking photos and 15-second videos – than a real deep-dive into living with it. But there are lots of useful real-world examples of using the wearable, including its promising translation feature and uncut takes of how long it often takes to respond.

There are also some familiar conclusions; overheating, the laser display not being bright enough in daylight, underwhelming AI features, and the hand-tracking interface being frustrating and worse than on a VR headset. In short, it's frustrating and CNET said there are times when the AI Pin has driven it crazy.

  • Sleek design
  • Well-conceived accessories
  • Decent battery life
  • Too frustrating for everyday use
  • Can't connect to your phone
  • AI is unreliable

The Verge: "Not even close"

Frequent bouts of hysterical laughter aren't usually a good sign for a tech review –and sure enough, The Verge found that the AI Pin's promise is completely undermined by its unreliability and its "single biggest problem – it is so, so slow".

Cue a 13-second wait for it to mis-identify the Brooklyn Bridge and other unintentionally hilarious gaffes. The Verge actually still came away "sort of impressed" by the AI Pin's technology, including the fact that it doesn't need a wake word and promises a world where you can sometimes leave your phone at home.

It also concluded that the Pin "might still be the future, or something like it", with its camera-based descriptions of real-world objects being "easily the most futuristic thing" about the device. But it's also a "$700 gamble" and the damning conclusion is that a cell-connected Apple Watch is a much more capable and functional device, while being a lot cheaper.

  • Sturdy and nicely made
  • No wake word needed
  • Many features not yet available
  • Very slow at responding
  • Doesn't always work

Bloomberg: "The design and interface are fatally flawed"

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman is an Apple reporter who notes that Humane's co-founders are former Apple staffers who worked on the iPhone and iPad, which gave them a leg-up when it came to investment. But despite its promising backstory, he concludes that the AI Pin's "fundamental design and interface are fatally flawed".

Gurman's conclusion is that the bugs and slow response times aren't the AI Pin's main problem. Instead, the voice control and laser projection system make it "a nonstarter for most people". He notes that smart speaker and voice assistant hype has died down because they're not a "practical user interface".

So while Gurman concludes, like most of the early reviews, that Humane deserves credit for creating something new and creating a system that "aggregate data from several AI engines", the concept is ultimately doomed to failure and is "never going to work".

What next for the Humane AI Pin?

Understandably, Humane has defended its new gadget from the wave of scathing reviews. Ken Kocienda, the company's Head of Product Engineering and the inventor of the iPhone's autocorrect, posted a lengthy statement on X (formerly Twitter) about why he's a "happy AI Pin user" and why his "intuition tells me that we are on track".

Kocienda admits that the AI Pin can be "frustrating sometimes", but apparently no more than a laptop or smartphone. That isn't the conclusion from the internet's first reviews from multiple sources, but the Humane designer also blames the social media landscape for encouraging "hot takes" and encouraging people to "jump on the skepticism bandwagon".

So what next for the AI Pin? Humane does have a roadmap for new features , with timers, gesture unlock, photo sharing via SMS, and more coming in software version 1.2, which is scheduled for "Summer". Other features like number sharing, visual shopping, and an SDK for apps are also in the pipeline, but don't yet have a date.

As it stands, the current consensus for the Humane AI Pin is that it's simply too ambitious for its form factor and current technology – including the problem that AI tends to 'hallucinate' or confidently give incorrect answers. For now, the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses and Rabbit R1 look like more promising examples of AI gadgets, but we'll be keeping an eye on AI Pin to see if it can overcome its inauspicious start.

Star Trek Discovery Enterprise Medical Badge and Pin Set

Coming Soon

Zoom image

The original USS Enterprise NCC-1701 returns in Star Trek: Discovery, complete with updated uniforms and re-imagined versions of those classic Starfleet insignia. QMx is now proud to bring fans exact replicas of the screen-used Enterprise badges, and we’re including a miniature lapel pin version of the same design with each badge.

The Enterprise badges are inspired by the patches from Star Trek: The Original Series, but also fit with the metallic designs created for Star Trek: Discovery. The new metal badges are shiny gold with a brushed silver outline and a debossed division icon. As with all of our QMx badges, these exact replicas are taken directly from the screen-used hero prop.

What sets our wearable badges apart from the original is the clasp, which uses strong, short-field magnets that are embedded in each badge and in a metal backplate. No more pinholes in delicate fabric! They can even be worn on leather and suede. The QMx magnetic clasp was first developed for the prop badges used in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek. Since Star Trek’s return to the small screen, all badges seen in Discovery use the same magnetic clasp invented by QMx.

Also in the set is a lapel pin that's a pin-backed miniature version of the Medical badge. Perfect for your favorite jacket, bag or hat, the lapel pin is a great way to show you're a member of Starfleet in situations where a full-size replica badge might not be an appropriate choice. All four Star Trek: Discovery Enterprise insignia badge sets are available separately: Command, Science, Operations and Medical.

  • Exact 1:1 replicas of the screen-used Enterprise badges from Star Trek: Discovery with black cross-detail
  • Includes a miniature lapel-pin version with the same level of detail
