Here's Where Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Is Really Filmed

Anson Mount on Star Trek Day

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is one of those shows that, because of its fantastic setting, could be filmed almost anywhere. Of course, that's the case with most "Star Trek" shows. Even when there's a scene taking place on Earth, it's so far in the future that set designers and location scouts need not worry too much about making sure that the scenery looks like, say, current-day San Francisco or Los Angeles ("Picard" Season 2 notwithstanding).

For this reason, it comes as little surprise that most "Star Trek" shows were simply filmed at studios in and around Los Angeles. For most of its run, "The Original Series" was filmed on Stages 31 and 32 at the Studios at Paramount, right smack in the middle of Hollywood (via Discover Los Angeles ). "The Next Generation," "Deep Space Nine," "Voyager," and "Enterprise" were also shot at the Studios at Paramount, while a great many of the outdoor scenes were simply filmed among LA's many canyons and hills.

Given how much of a throwback "Strange New Worlds" is — between its return to an episodic format , its use of so many classic characters, and its retro look  – you would think that it, too, films in the LA area. But in fact, you would be wrong.

Strange New Worlds films in Toronto, Canada

Most exterior scenes for "Strange New Worlds" are filmed in Toronto, Canada (via The Cinemaholic ). Toronto is, of course, a popular filming destination due to its high urban density and proximity to one of the largest lakes in North America (not to mention those sweet tax credits). The home of the production, however, is actually CBS Stages Canada, the first branded studio from an American entertainment company to be opened in the country (via The Hollywood Reporter ), and it is located in Mississauga, a city of nearly 800,000 people located just 17 miles southwest of Toronto (via World Population Review ). "Strange New Worlds" began filming there in February 2021 (via Daily Star Trek News ).

Many of the backgrounds used in "Strange New Worlds" are shot in New Mexico, whose dramatic desert dunes, mountains, and other bizarre landscapes are often the starting point for CGI and other special effects. Other exterior scenes for "Strange New Worlds" have been shot at York University, a large public university on the edge of Toronto whose angular Brutalist architecture makes it an appropriate choice for anything futuristic (via LatLong.net ). "Star Trek: Discovery" also shoots in the Toronto area, though most of its interior scenes have been shot at Pinewood Toronto Studios (via MovieWeb ). "Star Trek: Picard," meanwhile, filmed its three seasons primarily in Greater Los Angeles (via IMDb ).

Pinewood Toronto Studios, part of the Pinewood Group, have named one of their sound stages The Star Trek Stage to celebrate one of the franchise's long-running filming locations. The announcement coincides with the release of the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery , produced by CBS Studios and currently streaming on Paramount+ in the US and Canada.

The Star Trek Stage is an 18,000 sq foot stage at Pinewood Toronto Studios and was officially renamed whilst the cast and crew were filming the final scenes of the final season. Star Trek: Discovery has been based at the Studios in downtown Toronto since January 2017. The stage was used to house the Ready Room and International Federation HQ. The production also utilized the 45,900 sq foot Mega Stage and Stage 7, 9 and 12 as well as production facilities and workshops.

  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 has begun filming in Toronto, after being delayed due to strikes.
  • A close-up image shared by producing director Chris Fisher suggests the Enterprise will come under fire and a section of the bridge will explode.
  • Co-executive producer and writer Davy Perez also shared an image, hinting that he and Fisher are working on the season 3 premiere.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 has begun filming in Toronto, as announced on social media by producing director Chris Fisher and co-executive producer and writer Davy Perez. Strange New Worlds season 3 production was originally to start in May but was halted due to the Writer's Guild strike, and then the SAG-AFTRA actors' strike. But now, the USS Enterprise under the command of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) is about to jump to warp speed again, with the cast and crew converging in Toronto and cameras rolling.

On Instagram, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds producing director Chris Fisher (@widgetfactoryco) shared an image from "Day 1, Episode 301" of the season 3 premiere's production. Fisher's image is a close-up of a console from the Starship Enterprise's bridge , and it was Liked by cast members Celia Rose Gooding, Christina Chong, Melissa Navia, and Melanie Scrofano. Check it out below:

Chris Fisher's image of the Enterprise bridge console has Caution tape and a sign that says "Caution Loaded Pyro," which indicates the Enterprise will come under fire by the Gorn and that section of the bridge will explode . Celia Rose Gooding commented, "that looks familiar!" and this could mean it's Ensign Nyota Uhura's communications console that could blow up in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 's premiere.

Strange New Worlds co-executive producer and writer Davy Perez (@davyperez) also shared an image of his director's chair from the set, with the caption: "Strange New Worlds Season 3, Day 1 of shooting,,, Time to get back in the chair #startrek" . Perez's pic was Liked by Bruce Horak, Christina Chong, Melissa Navia, and even Star Trek: Picard season 3's Todd Stashwick. Since both Chris Fisher and Davy Perez are on set, it could mean they are the respective director and writer of Strange New Worlds' season 3 premiere .

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 is in production, and Paramount+ should release the new episodes ASAP rather than drop them all in 2025.

When Will Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Premiere On Paramount+?

Filming on strange new worlds season 3 should last about 6 months,.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is filming 10 season 3 episodes , and production is reportedly set to continue into June 2024. It takes approximately 10 days to film an episode of Strange New Worlds, and the production team's plan may be to get Strange New Worlds season 3's premiere in the can before the Christmas and New Year's holiday break. Season 3's premiere will resolve Strange New Worlds season 2's cliffhanger ending where Captain Pike was put in a no-win scenario against the Gorn.

Strange New Worlds season 2 ended with Captain Pike ordered to retreat while members of the USS Enterprise crew were kidnapped by the Gorn and Captain Marie Batel (Melanie Scrofano) is dying from a Gorn infection.

In all likelihood, fans won't get to see Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 until some time in 2025, given the amount of post-production the episodes require, and Paramount+ will also want to properly promote Strange New Worlds season 3 . It's possible that Paramount+ could split Strange New Worlds season 3 in half and release some episodes by the end of 2024, but that is unsubstantiated wishful thinking by eager fans right now. But with Star Trek: Picard now over and Star Trek: Discovery ending with season 5 in 2024, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds becomes the flagship and crown jewel series of Star Trek on Paramount+.

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Season 3 Resumes Filming With New Set Image

Everyone is excited to get back to set, even Princess Runa!

The Big Picture

  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 is now filming in Toronto.
  • The series may not return until 2025 due to extensive post-production.
  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 resolved Una's arrest (a cliffhanger from Season 1), and featured unprecedented episodes like an animated crossover and a musical episode.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is finally ready to begin its latest voyage. The third season of Paramount+'s sci-fi hit is now filming in Toronto, Ontario. The news comes from the Instagram account of Runa Ewok , the adorable dog of Strange New Worlds star Christina Chong . Chong, who plays the USS Enterprise 's security chief La'an Noonien-Singh in the series, posted a picture of Runa in the Enterprise 's ready room set, indicating that filming is now underway.

Collider previously had the exclusive news that Strange New Worlds had set a post-strike production window from December 2023 to June 2024. Given the series' extensive special effects and post-production time, it is unlikely that the series, which chronicles the adventures of Captain Christopher Pike ( Anson Mount ) and the Enterprise before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series , will return this year. Star Trek fans do have the upcoming fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery to look forward to; Strange New Worlds was spun off from that series after a well-received guest stint by Mount and fellow Enterprise crew members Spock ( Ethan Peck ) and Una Chin-Riley ( Rebecca Romijn ) in its second season. Discovery will take its final bow starting April 4 , with Strange New Worlds likely to air in 2025.

What Happened in Season 2 of 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds'?

Season 2 of Strange New Worlds resolved Season 1's shocking ending — when Una was arrested by the Federation for concealing her genetic enhancements. Pike won a court battle to have her freed and reinstated. Over the course of the season, the show traveled back in time to 21st-century Toronto, crossed over with the animated Star Trek: Lower Decks , and featured the franchise's first-ever musical episode . The season ended with a cataclysmic cliffhanger — the Enterprise is under attack from the hostile reptilian Gorn aliens, and Pike's fellow captain and lover Marie Batel ( Melanie Scrofano ) has been implanted with a Gorn embryo, spelling her doom. It hearkened back to the legendary cliffhanger of Star Trek: The Next Generation 's season-ending " The Best of Both Worlds " — and unfortunately, fans will have a lot longer than a few months to learn the fate of all involved.

Runa has appeared in the series herself; she was featured as the pet of Princess Thalia (also Chong) in " The Elysian Kingdom ", a first-season episode in which the Enterprise 's crew is transformed into storybook characters by a mysterious space entity. Star Trek has a long tradition of on-screen animal appearances, from Data's cat Spot from The Next Generation to Captain Archer's beagle Porthos, who was a regular on Enterprise .

The third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is now filming, but has not yet set a release date . Stay tuned to Collider for future updates, and watch Collider's interview with Chong and castmates Celia Rose Gooding and Melissa Navia below. Keep up with our guide to Season 3 here .

Toronto Stage Used For ‘Discovery’ Renamed “The Star Trek Stage” By Pinewood Studios

Back in 2016, CBS Studios picked Pinewood Studios in Toronto for where they would be filming their upcoming (and still unnamed) streaming Star Trek series. Several of their stages have been used to produce five seasons of Star Trek: Discovery (and more Trek), and to honor that legacy Pinewood renamed one of the stages for the franchise.

The Star Trek Stage

Today Pinewood Studios is officially announcing the stage renaming to coincide with the release of the fifth and final season of Discovery , now streaming on Paramount+. “The Star Trek Stage” (Originally Pinewood’s Stage 8) is an 18,000 sq foot stage at Pinewood Toronto Studios. While they are making the announcement today, the actual stage was renamed during production on season 5.

The Star Trek Stage is one of many stages that have been used by CBS Studios for Star Trek, most recently for the Federation HQ and USS Discovery ready room sets. The Star Trek: Discovery production has also utilized the 45,900 sq foot Mega Stage and Pinewood’s Stage 7, Stage 9, and Stage 12 as well as production facilities and workshops. The upcoming Section 31 streaming movie was also shot at Pinewood.

Sarah Farrell, General Manager of Pinewood Toronto Studios, said in a statement, “We are so delighted to have hosted Star Trek: Discovery over 5 seasons and the recently wrapped Star Trek: Section 31 movie event and to celebrate our longstanding relationship with the franchise with our own Star Trek Stage. We look forward to welcoming many more productions to come.”

“Pinewood Toronto Studios has become a second home for our Star Trek family, and we’re grateful that they’ve named a stage in honor of the franchise,” said Alex Kurtzman, Executive Producer at the helm of the Star Trek series. “In addition to the amazing stage space, we’ve benefitted from working with the talented artists in front of the camera and behind the scenes and look forward to our partnership in Toronto on future series.”

Pinewood Studios has a history for naming stages after famous productions that use their facilities. The original Pinewood Studios lot in the UK has the Albert R. Broccoli 007 Stage , as Pinewood has long been a home to the James Bond franchise with producer Albert R. Broccoli (and more recently daughter Barbara Broccoli).

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , which is currently in production on its third season with a fourth recently announced by Paramount+, is also shot in the Toronto area, but not at Pinewood. SNW is shot at CBS Stages Canada  in Mississauga, Ontario. Both productions also use the Pixomondo AR Wall LED Stage in Toronto.

Starfleet Academy coming to the Mega Stage

Pinewood will also be home to the upcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series, which is expected to start filming this summer. The recent Star Trek feature in Variety described how Pinewood’s “Mega Stage” will be used for Academy :

“In one of Kurtzman’s several production offices in Toronto, he and production designer Matthew Davies are scrutinizing a series of concept drawings for the newest “Star Trek” show, “Starfleet Academy.” A bit earlier, they showed me their plans for the series’ central academic atrium, a sprawling, two-story structure that will include a mess hall, amphitheater, trees, catwalks, multiple classrooms and a striking view of the Golden Gate Bridge in a single, contiguous space. To fit it all, they plan to use every inch of Pinewood Toronto’s 45,900 square foot soundstage, the largest in Canada.”

Nice gesture. After decades of use by Trek movies and shows, Paramount never did this for Stages 8 or 9.

So Kurtzman clearly signed some sort of long term deal here right?

Maybe. Or it’s just Pinewood buttering up a good client.

I just sooo ironic one ofvthise videos posted in this article is geo blacked Canada…….fir a show shot in Canada. Heaven forbid Canadians get access to promotional materials for a Canadian produced show.

And why would it being filmed in Canada have any significance ?

I agree it shouldn’t. Promotional materials should be available to everyone regardless where it was filmed. Doesn’t make sense for a behind the scenes internet clip to be geo blocked.

should have called it the 1701 stage, a la Pinewood’s 007 stage.

That woulda been SAWEET!!!

I like the way you think, sir.

Oh nice! That’d have been cool.

It’s Canada, so the 1701-eh? Stage.

So touching. Reminds me of ‘Leonard Nimoy Way’ on the Paramount lot.

Nice gesture from Pinewood.

The Star Trek Stage announced at Pinewood Toronto Studios

The star trek stage is the new name for the 18,000 sq foot stage 8.

Pinewood Toronto Studios, part of the Pinewood Group, have named one of their sound stages “ The Star Trek Stage” to celebrate one of the franchise’s long-running filming locations. The announcement coincides with the release of the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery, produced by CBS Studios and currently streaming on Paramount+ in the US and Canada.

“The Star Trek Stage” is an 18,000 sq foot stage at Pinewood Toronto Studios and was officially renamed whilst the cast and crew were filming the final scenes of the final season. Star Trek: Discovery has been based at the Studios in downtown Toronto since January 2017. The Stage was used to house the Ready Room and International Federation HQ. The production also utilised the 45,900 sq foot Mega Stage and Stage 7, 9 and 12 as well as production facilities and workshops.

The fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery will find Captain Burnham and the crew of the  U.S.S. Discovery  uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well…dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it.

William Shatner willing to return as Kirk in new 'Star Trek' film Back to video

In an interview with the Canadian Press , Shatner, 93, proposes that he could return as a younger version of Kirk using de-aging technology similar to how 80-year-old Harrison Ford appeared during the opening sequence of last year’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny . T elling the newswire service that he’s now a spokesperson for Otoy, a company specializing in technology that “takes years off of your face,” a boyish Kirk could reappear and “look 10, 20, 30, 50 years younger.”

He also says it’s possible Kirk could come back from the dead after he’s resurrected.

“‘We’ve got Captain Kirk’s brain frozen here,’” he said, imagining a scene in which his character is revived. “There’s a scenario. ‘Let’s see if we can bring back a little bit of this, a little salt, a little pepper (in his hair). Oh, look at that. Here comes Captain Kirk!’”

Acknowledging that it is “almost impossible” he’ll be back on the Starship Enterprise, Shatner concedes that returning to the venerable sci-fi franchise is still an “intriguing idea.”

“It was a great role and so well-written and if there were a reason to be there not just to make a cameo appearance, but if there were a genuine reason for the character appearing, I might consider it,” he says.

Shatner, whose decades-long career includes  Miss Congeniality ,  T.J. Hooker ,  Boston Legal ,  $#*! My Dad Says ,  Better Late Than Never  and  The Unexplained , along with the original 1960s  Star Trek  TV series and films, was speaking to the CP to celebrate the release of his new documentary You Can Call Me Bill .

As Star Trek has enjoyed renewed popularity on the small screen, we have asked Shatner many times about possibly returning as Kirk, who was killed off in 1994’s Star Trek Generations .

In 2018 , Shatner told Postmedia that reprising the role “wasn’t for (him).” Just a few years before that , he told us he didn’t want stop playing Kirk and that the character died “protesting.”

When we suggested that Kirk could still be alive because the timeline had been altered by the release of the 2009 Star Trek film, which rebooted the series on the big screen, Shatner was nonplussed.

“Mark, I’m giving you this job right now. I’m assigning you a job – and you’ll be highly paid. I want you to solve the mystery of bringing me, 50 years later, back as Captain Kirk. I want you to solve that mystery,” he said at the time,

But during our last conversation in 2022 , Shatner spoke about Kirk’s final lines in Generations when he uttered the words, “Oh my.”

“ As you get older, as I’m sure you can imagine, you think of death — it becomes more and more present … So when this character was dying, I thought, ‘How do you die?’ I’ve heard of people weeping, my father was incapacitated, he had had a stroke and he had tears in his eyes and I wonder quite often what he was crying about. Was he crying about leaving? I loved him very much and he loved me. Was he weeping because of me and leaving this world?” Shatner said.

“So I thought, ‘How would Captain Kirk die?’ Captain Kirk, who has faced death so often. I thought he would look at death approaching with the same awe and wonder that he looked at these strange beings that he faced in the years I played him. I wanted him to look at death as something filled with the awe and wonder that he looked at the universe. So the, ‘Oh my,’ was supposed to be a ‘wow.’ What came out had an element of dread, and I didn’t want that. I didn’t play it exactly the way I wanted to, which was, ‘Oh my, the gorgeousness of death. What’s going to happen?’ That’s the way I feel about it.”

He then let out a little laugh. “That’s the way I want to feel about it. I don’t want to feel fear, but I’m afraid I feel fear.”

Shatner’s last appearancewas in the 1994 film Star Trek Generations , and – spoiler alert – he dies.

Shatner even has a scenario where Kirk is resurrected.

“A company that wants to freeze my body and my brain for the future might be a way of going about it,” he said. “‘We’ve got Captain Kirk’s brain frozen here.’ There’s a scenario. ‘Let’s see if we can bring back a little bit of this, a little salt, a little pepper. William Shatner recently told Canadian Press that he wouldn’t rule out returning as Captain Kirk in a new “ Star Trek ” project if the script impressed him. While the actor’s age might pose an issue as Shatner turned 93 years old in March, that’s nothing a bit of de-aging technology couldn’t fix.

“It’s an intriguing idea,” Shatner said about returning as Kirk. “It’s almost impossible. But if was a great role and so well-written and if there were a reason to be there not just to make a cameo appearance, but if there were a genuine reason for the character appearing, I might consider it.”

Popular on Variety

“[It] takes years off of your face, so that in a film you can look 10, 20, 30, 50 years younger than you are,” Shatner said.

Another issue around Shatner’s “Star Trek” return is Kirk’s death in the 1994 film “Star Trek Generations,” which is the last time Shatner appeared in the iconic franchise. He’s already brainstormed a plot device that could serve as a workaround and have his version of Kirk come back to life.

“A company that wants to freeze my body and my brain for the future might be a way of going about it,” Shatner said. “‘We’ve got Captain Kirk’s brain frozen here.’ There’s a scenario. ‘Let’s see if we can bring back a little bit of this, a little salt, a little pepper. Oh, look at that. Here comes Captain Kirk!’”

Variety exclusively reported in March that Steve Yockey, creator of the Max series “The Flight Attendant,” had signed on to write the script for “Star Trek 4.” The movie is being designed as the final installment for Pine and the cast. Several attempts to get a fourth “Star Trek” movie off the ground with this cast have failed over the years. One version of the project was to be directed by Matt Shakman (“WandaVision”) and written by Lindsey Beer (“Sierra Burgess Is a Loser”) and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (“Captain Marvel”). Shakman left the project to direct Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four” instead.

Other “Star Trek” projects remain in development at Paramount as well. The studio is working with screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”) and director by Toby Haynes (“Black Mirror: USS Callister”) on an origin story movie, while a project with screenwriter Kalinda Vazquez (“Fear the Walking Dead”) that was first announced in 2021 also remains in development.

William Shatner says he would consider ‘Star Trek’ return: ‘Here comes Captain Kirk!’

star trek toronto filming

By Alex Nino Gheciu, The Canadian Press

Posted May 5, 2024 8:00 am.

Last Updated May 5, 2024 8:12 am.

TORONTO — At 93, William Shatner would entertain boldly going where no man has gone before — again.

The Montreal-born actor, famed for his portrayal of Captain Kirk in “Star Trek,” says he is open to reprising the iconic role in the sci-fi franchise as long as the storytelling is stellar.

“It’s an intriguing idea,” Shatner says on a video call while promoting his new documentary “You Can Call Me Bill,” which drops digitally and on video-on-demand Tuesday.

“It’s almost impossible but it was a great role and so well-written and if there were a reason to be there not just to make a cameo appearance, but if there were a genuine reason for the character appearing, I might consider it.”

Shatner’s last appearance in the franchise was in the 1994 film “Star Trek Generations,” where Captain Kirk is killed off. He suggests he could play a younger version of the Starship Enterprise captain as he’s recently signed on to be the spokesperson for Otoy, a company specializing in technology that “takes years off of your face, so that in a film you can look 10, 20, 30, 50 years younger than you are.”

He muses on a scenario where Kirk is resurrected.

“A company that wants to freeze my body and my brain for the future might be a way of going about it,” he says in a recent call from Los Angeles.

“‘We’ve got Captain Kirk’s brain frozen here.’ There’s a scenario. ‘Let’s see if we can bring back a little bit of this, a little salt, a little pepper. Oh, look at that. Here comes Captain Kirk!’”

“You Can Call Me Bill,” directed by Alexandre O. Phillippe, offers a look back at Shatner’s body of work — from his “Star Trek” TV show and films to TV series including “Boston Legal” and “T.J. Hooker” — and follows his trip to outer space aboard Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin shuttle in 2021. It also features the actor’s musings on life, death and nature.

“Over the years, people have come to me and said, ‘Let’s make a biographical film,” Shatner says.

“I’d say, ‘Oh no, I don’t want to do that.’ A biographical film sort of signifies the end. Cut! And then you die.”

But Shatner says he was sold on the idea when the doc’s producers Legion M approached him with the idea of crowdfunding the film.

The self-described “fan-owned” company allows fans to own a financial share in the film and any profits it generates. “You Can Call Me Bill” raised US$750,000 in four days.

The actor also wanted to “leave some part of a truth” about him for his children and grandchildren after he dies.

Shatner says he learned a great deal about himself while making the film but on the other hand, “I don’t know what ‘know thyself’ means.”

Even at 93, he says he doesn’t believe he has much wisdom to offer.

“That’s a mystique that has no basis in truth: as you get older, you get wiser. If you’re dumb as a young man, you’re dumb as an old man. You’re a dumb old man is what you are. It doesn’t necessarily mean time foists wisdom on you. What it does put upon you is how quickly life is over. That’s for certain.”

Well aware of his fleeting mortality, Shatner is making the most of the time he has left. He’s releasing a children’s album, “Where Will The Animals Sleep? Songs For Kids & Other Living Things” later this month and will join a cruise to Antarctica with astronaut Scott Kelly and astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson in December.

He’s also joined several “companies of the future,” as a spokesperson for some and in the background for others, including one that develops “technology like the medical device on ‘Star Trek,’ so it’s the size of a pack of cards and can tell you whether you have a disease or not,” and one “that will take your DNA, make an artificial gem out of it and give you two: one that you keep and one that goes into a box that will be released on the moon.”

“Life is so short, you’ve got to do something now. Go to that place, know that person, read that book now!” he says.

“That’s what I think old age (teaches you). But then, by the time you learn that, you’re dying. You don’t have any time. That’s right. You’re dead.”
