The year was 1995. It had been two years since a Star Trek series starring a former Benson regular debuted on television. It was also the first time in almost thirty years that a Star Trek series showed up on a network TV lineup, launching the new United Paramount Network on January 16th.

To refresh your memory, it was competing in the Monday at 8 pm timeslot with Coach, The Nanny, Melrose Place, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. For those of you under 30, shows used to air at specific times during the week. Maybe you could tape them to watch later, but half the time that didn’t work.

And now I feel like Gilbert Gottfried doing his old Groucho Marx impression .

Like TNG, and DS9 before it, it got off to a bit of a rocky start. The Kazon are still the most annoying Trek villains to me of the franchise, and Ceska just never worked for me. But they later found their footing, established their characters, and got people to not hate Neelix as much as they did at the start. For me, it never reached the pinnacle that DS9 reached, but the last few seasons were strong.

So here we are, 28+ years later, and now Voyager has come to Star Trek Fleet Command. And we’ve got the Delta Quadrant, the EMH, and B’Elanna Torres in the game, for starters. We’ve got a new building, and a whole new Armada system (that builds on a whole old Armada system.)

Maybe it’s just because I’m crazy tired from work and running around after my kids this month, but I’m kinda looking forward to exploring the Delta Quadrant. It’s always fun to explore.

More is coming. Probably a ship. Janeway and Tuvox, and a Seven of Nine article that will top the Carol Marcus article for the number of clicks that exactly related to game-strategy. Somehow we’re going to get Neelix in the game, though I can’t even begin to imagine how he’s going to work.

And you know there’s a Tuvix reference coming in the game.

And without comment, I’ll leave this here. If you know, you know.

New Building – The Artifact Gallery

So another arc set, and another new building. To be fair, the last few (the Armory, Mess Hall, and Command Center) have all been really useful, without costing any gas, ore, or crystal, so they’ve all been wins.

This new one, the artifact hall that you’ll be able to construct starting at level 26 will allow you to collect and upgrade artifacts. (Yes, upgrading an artifact seems like an odd concept to me, sort of like finding a chariot from ancient Egypt and upgrading it with a cd-player. But that’s as may be.)

The building itself, (located on the far left of your base) gives you nice bonuses to your hull health and shield health. It also gives you a bonus to your “Artifact Tokens.”

You’ll unlock the building and your first artifact from the Artifact Gallery Intro Missions. And the good news is that you can get these missions for free. Yes, there will be options to spend money on this feature in the near future.

The artifacts will give you various permanent buffs. Think of these like researches, or like Bajoran Favors. The word on the street is that these buffs will make a noticeable difference.

In order to unlock these artifact buffs, you’ll need to collect artifact shards, which you’ll create from artifact tokens. There will be two types of artifact tokens: standard and premium.

You’ll get tokens by defeating formation armadas. And speaking of those…

Formation Armadas

After adding solo armadas, and then Borg solo armadas, now we go the other way. Formation armadas.

These will involve the simultaneous destruction of three connected armadas. Each of the sub-armadas (that look like Species 8472 bioships ) can have up to four players, for 12 players in total. Now you will get an armada chest for defeating one node of the Formation Armada, but you’ll won’t get any artifact materials unless you defeat all three.

Probably the most groundbreaking thing is that you’ll be able to complete these armadas with players from other alliances. Each node can only have players from one alliance, but other alliances could complete the other two nodes.

Like the Artifact Gallery, you’ll need to be ops level 26 or above to participate in these. It’s also not dependent on your Armada Control Center. The lowest available Formation Armadas will be level 30, but level 26 players should be able to defeat these (and reach them) if they work together. In total, there will be six different levels of uncommon Formation Armadas to start with.

You’ll launch these with new Formation Armada Directives, and you’ll get some of these for free each day through daily goals.

Each node will need to be launched with its own directives. So Armada A, Armada B, and Armada C will all need to be launched. They’ll operate on 15-minute synchronized timers, so the timer will start when the first armada is launched. The second and third timers will then sync up to the first.

You cannot start a formation armada if one of the nodes is damaged or missing. You’ll have to wait for them to respawn, and this time frame should be shorter than deep-space armadas, but longer than solos. But that’s as precise as I’ve been told. They are supposed to be a bit harder than normal FKR Armadas.

The last thing you’ll probably be asking yourself is “Where does a body find these newfangled Formation Armadas?”

Fair question.

Since it’s the Voyager Arc, you’ll find them in the Delta Quadrant, of course.

Delta Quadrant Space

About the Delta Quadrant. The vast section of space that was the setting for Star Trek Voyager is also the setting for the game this month.

There are two points of entry for the Delta Quadrant. One will be at the bottom of your screen after you restart your game (after updating your client in the app store.) This one is called the Border of the Alpha Quadrant and is accessible for players level 26+.

The second will be found in the top of your screen, above Federation Space and is for players level 34+. This one is called the “Depths of the Delta Quadrant.” Now you’re searching for the USS Voyager as it continues its journey home. (Not it’s Voyage Home, that’s got whales.)

The Delta Quadrant will contain new systems, in addition to “lost hostiles” pulled there by the caretaker. You’ll also come across Hirogen Hunters, who’ll have inflated loot and power, and should be harder to kill than other ships of their level.

It’s also where you’ll find “planetary missions.”

Two New Officers. One of them is Holographic. The other is not.

And with a Voyager Arc, we’ve got the first two Voyager officers, B’Elannah Torres, and the Doctor. Both of them have below-deck abilities, (so no Emergency Command Hologram here.)

He’s an epic science officer, whose officer ability will increase your armor, shield deflection and dodge for two rounds every time your ship takes damage from a non-armada hostile. His below-deck ability increases the resources gained from hostiles.

She’s a rare engineering officer, whose officer ability is also hostile-based. When you take damage, she the opposite of the Doctor, increasing your offensive stats (armor piercing, shield piercing and accuracy), though only for one round each time.

Her below-deck ability is also something new. She can trigger a hull breach on hostiles for one round, so you can pair her with your hull-breach crews. Not quite sure how big an impact this will really make yet, but it’s different. It’s the first below-deck ability to trigger hull-breach, burning or morale. Granted it’s only for hostiles, but it’s noteworthy.

There are lots of missions this month, focusing on the Voyager Storyline. You’ll have 10 core missions for players 34+, 10 “Planetary” side missions, and the three Artifact Gallery Side Missions.

And this month, SNW Part 1 missions come to the Holodeck.

Other things to look out for this month

• Species 8472’s Energy beam. Always looked cool on Voyager, and gives you a 20% piercing buff against all armadas. It’s currently only available for purchase.
• There are also three new prime nodes, prime ex-borg credit efficiency, defiant cost efficiency, and prime interceptor wrecking. The last of the three will give you a 300% damage buff when fighting other player’s interceptors.
• For those of you into avatars, we’ve got the Doctor, B’Elanna, a Hirogen Hunder Ship, Delta Flyer, and Species 8472 Ship. The new frames are Species 8472, Warp Core, and Artifact Hall.
• New hailing frequencies are an old-time pocket watch and a choosy Doctor.

USS Voyager

How can you add the USS Voyager to your fleet?

To acquire blueprints for the USS Voyager, you need to reach Operations Level 30 and defeat Hirogen hostiles in the Delta Quadrant. Collect Hirogen Relics as spoils of victory, and refine them in the Voyager refinery. Once you reach Operations Level 34 and have gathered all the blueprints, you can build the USS Voyager.

The USS Voyager enables you to acquire Isolytic damage Artifacts and ship parts for various vessels, including the Cerritos, Amalgam, G4 ships, and more.

Advanced Sensors (active) uncover hidden hostiles in the Delta Quadrant, such as the elusive Species 8472. This state has a cost, Deuterium Canister, duration, and cooldown.

Astometrics Scan (active) scans a player's ship and reveals the location of their station. This state has a cost, Deuterium Canister, duration, and cooldown.

Deuterium Canister can be found after refining Hirogen Relics in the USS Voyager Refinery. Hirogen Relics can be found in the Delta Quadrant systems on Hirogen Hostiles.

How to upgrade it?

To upgrade the USS Voyager, you need to refine Exotic Biotoxins and Anomaly Samples . These valuable materials need to be refined in the Voyager refinery, harnessing their true power to enhance the starship's capabilities.

Exotic Biotoxins can be acquired from Species 8472 Bioships in the Velixys system, while Anomaly samples can be mined from systems such as FSEP-505, FSEP-3819, FSEP-247, and FSEP-001.

Important note : Species 8472 Bioships are elusive and can only be spotted while using Advanced Sensors.

USS Voyager research nodes will further enhance not only the ship itself but also provide fleetwide buffs. From the Below Deck Assembly (unlocks Below Deck slots in officer presets), to the Artifact Hunting Extraordinaire (adds a bonus roll of Artifact rewards in the common and rare Anomaly Sample refinery), Dismantle Tinkering (increases base scrapping speed for all ships), and Ship Maintenance Efficiency (increases the base cost efficiency for repairing all ships); these nodes are an invaluable addition to your buffs.

Early usage [ ]

By the development of the NX-Alpha in 2143 , the Starfleet rank structure had at least three enlisted ranks, four officer ranks, and three ranks for use by flag officers . Silver rank pips were displayed on the right breast of the Starfleet uniforms , above a colored shoulder trim denoting what division the crew member was assigned to. Flag officers' pips were surrounded by a black rectangle with a silver border. ( ENT : " First Flight ", et al.) This system was still in place by 2161 . ( ENT : " These Are the Voyages... ")

By the 2230s , the Starfleet uniform used a sleeve stripe system instead of pips to denote rank. ( Star Trek )

Early-mid 23rd century [ ]

By 2239 , Starfleet had adopted a uniform where officer rank was denoted by the number of raised or indented pips on a Starfleet delta . ( ST : " The Brightest Star ") The admiralty wore a Starfleet insignia surrounded by a wreath made up of smaller golden or black Starfleet insignia on a dark disc; the more of them are gold, the higher the rank. ( DIS : " The Vulcan Hello ", " The Butcher's Knife Cares Not for the Lamb's Cry ")

A variation of this uniform introduced in the 2250s changed the rank system back to a sleeve stripe system. For the command and operations division officers, the stripes matched the division color: gold stripes for command, red stripes for operations. Sciences division officers wore silver stripes. ( DIS : " Brother ", " Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2 ")

A new uniform was introduced around 2259 , retaining the rank insignia system from the previous style with only slight modifications. Sciences officers wore blue stripes in the new system, while silver stripes were reserved for medical officers. Doctors wore a light-blue variant of the sciences uniform while nurses wore white. Another Starfleet uniform used around this time had a much simpler rank and insignia system, in which enlisted personnel wore no rank insignia while the rank of chief petty officer was denoted by a special sleeve stripe. Commissioned officers wore a solid gold stripe. This system would be in use concurrently with other rank insignia systems for at least fifteen years, with only a slight modification by 2265 , when those holding the rank of captain were authorized to wear two gold stripes whereas other officers wore one. ( TOS : " The Cage ", " Where No One Has Gone Before ")

Late-mid 23rd century [ ]

By 2266 , Starfleet had phased out the simple rank system that gave all commissioned officers the same insignia. They also modified the other system that had been in use for the last decade or so. In this new system, all enlisted personnel, chief petty officers included, as well as ensigns, had no insignia whatsoever with most enlisted personnel also wearing Starfleet jumpsuits instead of the standard tunic uniforms worn by the officers. ( TOS : " The Corbomite Maneuver ", et al)

Starfleet flag officers wore a thicker braid insignia than regular officers. ( TOS : " Court Martial ", " The Trouble with Tribbles ")

The rank of cadet and midshipman were both in use at Starfleet Academy . ( TOS : " Shore Leave ", " Court Martial ")

In the mid- 2270s , Starfleet changed its uniforms yet again, although mainly in appearance only. The rank insignia of officers remained almost the same, though the lieutenant junior grade braid was now used to indicate ensign. Enlisted personnel adopted a style of their own rank insignia and both officers and admirals could now wear a short sleeve "Class B" uniform which displayed rank insignia on shoulder tabs. Late 23rd century [ ]

By the year 2278 , Starfleet had again changed its uniforms , abandoning the previous sleeve stripe system and adopting a totally new insignia design which incorporated a series of rank pins worn on a shoulder strap with the color of the strap determining the bearer's branch within Starfleet. At this point, the lieutenant junior grade rank had also been re-established.

The shoulder strap system also matched with a cuff strap which could display various citation and years-of-service pins. Finally, in the case of admirals, another series of cuff straps denoted the particular rank of the admiral.

Enlisted uniforms were also completely revamped from previous versions and now were worn as jumpsuits with rank pins worn on the lower right sleeve. Enlisted ranks themselves were expanded, encompassing several grades of petty officer and chief petty officer . ( Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan )

With the exception of some minor cosmetic changes to officer uniforms, including the introduction of a standard communicator pin by 2344 , the uniforms and insignia of the late 23rd century remained unchanged until the late 2340s . ( TNG : " Yesterday's Enterprise ", " Family ")

A captain's rank pips

By the year 2355 , Starfleet had introduced a new uniform design , with a pip system of golden pin insignia worn on the collar. ( TNG : " The Battle ")

The 24th century pip system included a black pip insignia to denote chief petty officers. ( TNG : " Realm Of Fear ")

The pip system used in the mid-to-late 24th century remained relatively unchanged through 2385 , having been kept across several uniform design changes. ( PIC : " Maps and Legends ")

In the 2360s , admirals wore a triangular insignia on a special flag officer uniform. ( TNG : " Too Short A Season ", " Coming of Age ", " Conspiracy ")

By 2365 , this insignia had been replaced by a "boxed pip" system worn vertically on the flag uniform collar. By the 32nd century , Starfleet had passed through a number of rank insignia systems. ( DIS : " Forget Me Not ", " Su'Kal ")

By 3189 , rank was indicated on an officer's tricom badge . The ranks of captains and admirals were also shown on the collar and shoulders. The shoulder and collar had a similar design; captains had a vertical shoulder rank band at the edge of the shoulder, while admirals had a horizontal band along the top of the shoulder. By 2258 in the alternate reality , Starfleet had adopted uniforms and an insignia pattern reminiscent of the mid 2250s in the prime reality . These new insignia consisted of silver bands worn on the lower sleeves of the uniform. Ensigns and certain skirt uniforms displayed no rank insignia. ( Star Trek )

In an alternate universe observed during a quantum fissure , Starfleet had adopted an additional form of insignia which was incorporated directly into the design of the Starfleet combadge . The same insignia was also used by the alien Barash during a holographic simulation of the USS Enterprise -D , designed to trick Commander William T. Riker into thinking he was in the future. Barash's simulation did not include the collar pips. ( TNG : " Future Imperfect ")

Fleet captain insignia, 2259

Fleet captain was a title bestowed upon Starfleet captains when in command of more than one facility. It was a rare distinction, held by particularly respected captains. ( TOS : " The Menagerie, Part I ", " Whom Gods Destroy ") The 2259 fleet captain rank insignia used the flag-officer-disk-version of the Starfleet insignia, with only the two small delta leaves below the main delta colored gold; the cuff stripes and other elements of the uniform were those of a captain. In 2259, Captain Christopher Pike , commanding officer of the USS Enterprise , was temporarily promoted to fleet captain, bringing the USS Farragut and Bavali Station under his command. The rank system used during Star Trek: The Original Series was originally designed by William Ware Theiss , with the first versions inspired principally by the insignia of the United States Navy. According to Inside Star Trek: The Real Story [ page number? • edit ] , since Gene Roddenberry didn't want an overtly military Starfleet, Theiss toned down his stripe system by giving ensigns no stripe and lieutenants one full stripe, which is what an actual USN ensign wears.

For Star Trek: The Motion Picture , Jon Povill sent Fletcher a production memo, dated 3 August 1978 , explaining the rank insignia to be used in the film, with no reference to lieutenant junior grade or other flag officers. ( The Making of Star Trek: The Motion Picture , p. 126) Robert Fletcher , who designed the Starfleet uniform used in the film, developed a rank system which displayed on straps over both shoulders. These insignia included a circle for "mid shipman", a triangle for "lieut comm jr. grade", a chevron for "lieutenant comm", a single stripe for "commander", two stripes for "captain", two stripes a circle with spines for "admiral" and two spiney circles for "adm of the fleet". ( Star Trek: Costumes , p. 45) An unidentified triangular insignia is worn on the epaulets of several crewmembers, but is not identified in any production or background sources. It's A Wrap! sale and auction listed it as representing the rank of petty officer . [6] While an additional epaulet insignia featuring a single thin strip was also used but not identified to a rank. During the production of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , Director Nicholas Meyer wanted the uniforms to feel as real as possible, and asked for new rank insignia. Fletcher explained: " There was kind of a complicated arrangement of divisions and ranks expressed by the braid on the sleeves. I made that up. I organized it and produced a little instruction booklet about it for the wardrobe department […]. " ( citation needed • edit ) On the early version of the uniforms, the insignia was on a band around the upper arm, which was later moved to the cuff. ( citation needed • edit )

The Star Trek Encyclopedia omitted and created insignia, introducing some confusion

The Star Trek Encyclopedia  (3rd ed., p. 201), depicted an overview of the rank system used in the Star Trek films , though it omitted the petty officer second class, created the master chief petty officer second class and fleet captain (which had not been used in the films,) and depicted erroneous insignia for lieutenant commander and admiral. The Star Trek Fact Files Part 70 and the Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 2, Issue 10 , p. 99, would also include the apocryphal fleet captain and master chief petty officer second class insignia, the erroneous lieutenant commander insignia (with a broken vertical gold stripe, instead of a solid horizontal gold stripe,) and an almost entirely different depiction of flag officer insignia. This system created an insignia with one gold dart to represent commodore, used the commodore insignia for rear admiral, created a three gold dart insignia for vice admiral, and used the rear admiral insignia for admiral. A three gold dart insignia was included in some It's A Wrap! sale and auction flag officer sets, but never seen on screen. [8]

The later pip designs of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Enterprise emulated US Navy insignias almost exactly, although an article on the 2151 uniforms and rank did not mention lieutenant junior grade or lieutenant commander. ( Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 3, Issue 11 , p. 42) Neither rank is used during Star Trek: Enterprise .

Star Trek: Countdown to Darkness , Issue 2 depicts that a style of uniform was in use by 2239 . This would make it seem that a few versions of the prime reality uniform were never adopted in the alternate reality, unless they was used very briefly after 2233 .

A rank senior to fleet admiral was first referenced in " The Wormhole Connection ". The rank of grand admiral is said to have existed in 2285 and has a special uniform with shoulder boards worn on the red maroon jacket uniform. The rank also appeared in the novel The Sorrows of Empire , held first by the counterpart Garth , then by the counterpart Matt Decker and then by Spock , before he becomes Emperor of the Terran Empire .

M'Ress is a Caitian officer with a seat on the USS Enterprise bridge, created for Star Trek: The Animated Series when Star Trek 's jump to animation meant that the aliens in Star Trek were no longer restrained by what the makeup department could physically create. As the first Caitian in Star Trek , M'Ress sets the standard for the feline alien species , later echoed by Star Trek 's other animated Caitian, Dr. T'Ana (Gillian Vigman) in Star Trek: Lower Decks .

Like many background characters, M'Ress' cool character design is a top reason for her appeal, but M'Ress earns her spot on the bridge of the Starship Enterprise by being a capable officer. When Vadic (Amanda Plummer) commandeers the Titan in Star Trek: Picard season 3, episode 8, "Surrender" , T'Veen is one of the Titan bridge officers used as leverage against Vadic's request for Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers). Mr. Mot (Ken Thorley)

In an interesting twist, Mr. Mot is a barber working on the USS Enterprise-D, and happens to be a Bolian, a species that has no hair of their own. Nonetheless, Commander William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) says that the civilian Mot is the best barber in Starfleet . There's more to being a barber than just cutting hair, after all, and Mot's listening ears are available to anyone who comes to sit in his barbershop chair, as long as they don't mind receiving a little free advice on the side.

After providing excellent service to the crew on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Mot grew even more successful. The Bolian barber became an entrepreneur, which is evident by the presence of Mr. Mot's Hair Emporium as one of the many businesses in Stardust City, on the planet Freecloud, as seen in Star Trek: Picard season 1, episode 5, "Stardust City Rag".

Groundskeeper Boothby's no-nonsense approach to the natural development of the Academy's flora also applies to how Boothby interacts with Starfleet cadets .

Boothby's influence on the USS Voyager crew was evident in Star Trek: Voyager season 5, episode 4, "In the Flesh", when a Species 8472 leader took on the guise of Boothby in a Starfleet Academy simulation, instead of a high-ranking Admiral.

Sometimes, Boothby's advice is harsh, as was the case with Jean-Luc Picard as a Starfleet Academy cadet. But in the end, Boothby always has an uncanny sensibility for knowing exactly how to cultivate the best forms of both botanical specimens and future Starfleet officers.

Lt. Kayshon (Carl Tart)

Lt. Kayshon has the honor of being the first Tamarian in Starfleet , debuting in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2, episode 2, "Kayshon, His Eyes Open", as the USS Cerritos' new security officer. The Tamarians, first seen in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 5, episode 2, "Darmok", have a puzzling metaphorical language reliant on background knowledge of Tamarian culture. Kayshon spends more time in the background after his first episode, still part of the USS Cerritos' security team. The years between "Picard and Dathon at El-Adred" and Kayshon's assignment to the USS Cerritos in Star Trek: Lower Decks mean the communication gap between Kayshon and the rest of the USS Cerritos' crew is much smaller than it might have been in the past. Kayshon communicates in Federation Standard, but still slips into Tamarian metaphor from time to time, which just adds new phrases to the Tamarian lexicon.

Dr. Migleemo (Paul F. Tompkins)

In Dr. Migleemo, Star Trek: Lower Decks continues the tradition that was established with Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) on Star Trek: The Next Generation by having a counselor aboard the USS Cerritos . Strictly speaking, Migleemo is not the galaxy's best counselor , with a whole plateful of food metaphors that don't always land butter-side-up, but Migleemo's heart is always in the right place.

As a bird-like alien of an unspecified species, Dr. Migleemo's character design pays homage to Star Trek: The Animated Series , since a bird man in a tweed suit may not translate that well to live action, but works perfectly for animation.

Even though Migleemo is bad at his job, it's in a way that's not actively harmful, but makes you want to root for him, just like any other lower decker on the Cerritos. Sometimes Migleemo gets it right , after all, like counseling Ensign D'Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) in the senior science officer training program in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3, episode 3, "Mining the Mind's Mines".

Nurse Alyssa Ogawa (Patti Yasutake)

Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) usually has assistants in the background of the USS Enterprise-D's sick bay, and one of these, Nurse Alyssa Ogawa, is a regular background character starting in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 4. Ogawa grows as a character over the course of TNG 's final four seasons , receiving a full name as of Star Trek: The Next Generation season 5, episode 18, "Cause and Effect", and developing as a character through Ogawa's casual conversations with Dr. Crusher about Alyssa's dating history.

Nurse Ogawa gets more to do when Ogawa is one of the four USS Enterprise-D junior officers at the heart of Star Trek: The Next Generation season 7, episode 15, "Lower Decks" , focusing on the friendship between often-overlooked characters. Instead, the picture of who Morn really is slowly comes together through other people's comments and conversation about Morn, with the speculation about Morn's true identity finally coming to a head in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 6, episode 12, "Who Mourns for Morn". Despite being separated by thousands of light years, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine crossed over inside the Mirror Universe. Voyager and Deep Space Nine were very different in tone, due to the differing approaches of the shows' respective producers, Brannon Braga and Ira Steven Behr. Where DS9 was a serialized drama that tackled huge themes, Voyager embraced a traditional episodic approach that could sometimes feel disposable and regressive . In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 3, episode 19, "Through the Looking Glass", Commander Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) is captured and taken to the Mirror Universe by "Smiley" O'Brien (Colm Meaney). The Rebellion in the Mirror Universe wanted Prime Sisko to convince the ex-wife of his Terran counterpart to join the resistance against the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance . As Sisko is taken to the Terran Rebellion's enclave, he meets the Mirror Universe variants of his DS9 crew mates. In the same scene Sisko also meets the Mirror Universe version of Star Trek: Voyager 's Lt. Tuvok (Tim Russ), leading a more logic-driven faction of the Rebellion.

Mirror Tuvok is the only Mirror Universe variant of a Star Trek: Voyager character that has appeared on TV.

Tuvok was included in "Through the Looking Glass" at the request of Rick Berman , who presumably wanted to strengthen the links between Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager . DS9 season 3 and Voyager season 1 aired concurrently with each other, and "Through the Looking Glass" aired on April 17, 1995, a week when there was no new episode of Voyager . In this gap between "State of Flux" and "Heroes and Demons", therefore, a brief crossover between Voyager and DS9 was a good way to keep the fledgling Star Trek show in the minds of the audience.

"Through the Looking Glass" isn't the only crossover between Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . The Voyager pilot "Caretaker" features the USS Voyager depart from Deep Space Nine to search for the missing Tuvok and the Maquis ship, the Valjean in the Badlands. As with McCoy and Picard in the previous Star Trek pilots, DS9 's Quark (Armin Shimerman) appeared in "Caretaker" to pass the baton to Voyager . In a scene that demonstrated how green the young Ensign Harry Kim (Garrett Wang) was, he almost falls for one of Quark's latest scams, until he's rescued by Lt. Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill).

Gul Evek (Richard Poe) and Morn (Mark Allen Shepherd) are the two other Star Trek: Deep Space Nine characters that appear in the Star Trek: Voyager pilot.

A version of Star Trek: Voyager 's Doctor (Robert Picardo) appeared in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 5, episode 16, "Doctor Bashir, I Presume" alongside his creator Dr. Lewis Zimmerman (also Picardo). Technically, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine marks the first real appearance by the EMH's creator, who had previously appeared in Voyager as a holographic replica. The real Zimmerman would later appear in Star Trek: Voyager season 6, episode 24, "Life Line", which also featured Lt. Reginald Barclay (Dwight Schultz) and Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) further strengthening the bonds between different corners of the Star Trek universe.

For those who follow him on X , Toufexis is a massive Star Trek fan, but he didn't find out how significant his role as L'ak in the final season was until he was in a spot where, understandably, wild reactions and jerky movements are discouraged. The actor shared the details of when he first found out he was going to be a Breen and how he felt about it:

When I went to the makeup test I had, I had to go put on the whole plaster where you sit there for 20 minutes and try not to pass out, try not to freak out. But I said, ‘Can I look at what I'm going to look like?’ And they showed me some concept art and I said, ‘What is he?’ And they said, ‘Oh, he's, he's gonna be a Breen.’ And I was like, ‘Breen don't take their helmets off.’ That was the first thing I said, that's a much of a nerd I am. And I'm like, ‘Are you telling me I'm gonna be the first Breen that takes his helmet off?’ …The makeup guys are geeks too. So it's like, ‘Yeah, it's gonna be cool. It's gonna be the first time in Star Trek!’ And so that really got me excited.

I can't express how much I love it when a big fan of Star Trek finds themselves in a role for the franchise. Being the first unmasked Breen may not mean a ton to every actor who would get the honor, but I know Elias Toufexis was as enthusiastic as he stated in the quote above. At the same time, what awful timing to figure it out when you're in the makeup chair and have to contain your excitement physically for a set period of time!

The Breen were first mentioned Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1990, and then six years later, the species would make its debut in the Deep Space Nine episode "Indiscretion" but remained unseen until just recently. According to a quote from showrunner Ira Steven Behr from the Deep Space Nine Companion , Breen were originally fully covered up because he "wasn't in the mood" to design a new alien race.

Fast forward to now, we've seen an unmasked Breen on the run from his species with his lover, Moll (who is nothing like Ahsoka 's Shin Hati ). The couriers are searching for the Progenitors' device in hopes they can exchange it with the Breen for freedom and no longer have to live as fugitives.

I'm getting really excited about this.

Michael Burnham, being the inspiring captain that she is , offered to protect L'ak and Moll from the Breen, but her offer was rejected. The two made their escape, are off to continue to search for more clues and, hopefully, evade the Breen capture.

It is cool to see Star Trek still surprising fans with reveals decades later, and I wonder if we'll see more unmasked Breen in upcoming Star Trek projects going forward. Perhaps whatever comes out of this conflict with the Breen will play a part in the story of the upcoming Starfleet Academy series , which is also set in the 32nd century. I can imagine we'll see at least one or two members of the Discovery cast there, though Mary Wiseman wouldn't spill the beans when I asked. Hey, you can't blame a guy for trying!
