STONE: bruising post-punk full of Scouse spirit and soul

Each week in First On, we introduce a shit-hot artist you’ll see opening the bill for your favourite act. This week, STONE discuss the importance of regional identity and returning to live shows with a support slot on Yungblud's UK tour

STONE

There’s no time for formalities during STONE’s home turf show at the O2 Academy Liverpool. During the pounding intro of set opener ‘Keep Running’, frontman Finlay Power has launched himself over the barrier and started a frenzied moshpit. It’s the perfect introduction to the Merseyside Gen Z punks, who’ve exploded onto festival stages this year with raucous anthems that cut through a sea of guitar-wielding contemporaries.

Meeting NME a few hours earlier proves no easy task. It’s Friday night and the city centre bars are already booming, but when we eventually find a seat outside a back street bar, he cuts a more reclined figure alongside drummer Alex Smith. Both are refraining from beer in the knowledge that they have a long drive south for the Isle Of Wight Festival looming the minute they’re off stage. It does well to sum up the packed schedule the band have had since lockdown restrictions eased, but Smith insists that they’re loving every minute: “Until now we’ve had no reference to a fanbase, so to be on the road and have places bouncing has been insane.”

He makes a good point. The band broke through with their 2020 single ‘Leave It Out’; a visceral slice of post-punk, it makes a thrilling backdrop for Power’s seething Scouse delivery: “So you got your eyes on your ex-girl’s social media / That’s fine mate but I promise it ain’t healing ya.” He says the lyrics – which were penned outside Liverpool’s dive bars – came to be a huge turning point for STONE. “It was an absolute eruption of energy and we carry that into the live show – we were desperate to get out and play.”

Pre-lockdown, their previous band The Bohos had reached a natural end. Power says there was a growing urge to move away from their classic indie sound, and to cut loose from the weight of his father, John Power, a member of Merseyside legends The La’s and frontman of Cast . “I felt like I was either something I wasn’t, or I was John Power’s son,” he says. “I knew that something new was coming though; I was writing these spoken word songs, and they felt more like me – and then STONE started in 2019. It was an evolution.”

Finding such moments of clarity before a global pandemic was far from ideal. Tonight, though, you can’t help feel that being caged inside for a year has intensified the magnitude of the show they put on. Power spends as much time in the crowd as he does onstage, spitting bars out in the middle of a circle pit, with a sickly smell of cheap shots hanging heavy in the air. There’s a depth and substance beyond the confrontational and direct lyricism; tracks like ‘Let’s Dance To The Real Thing’ and ‘Stay Silent’ offer up a more melodic and versatile side – there’s still that thrashing bite, but they carry sprawling melodies.

Scenes were similar at their triumphant Reading & Leeds sets this summer. Footage shows Power’s camouflaged trousers flung high above the crowd, as he surfs across waves of feral hands. They made such an impression that word of his antics got through to Reading Festival staff before they’d even arrived on-site, with security threatening to pull their show if there was a repeat of the previous day’s carnage at Leeds.

Recommended

“Reading & Leeds was one off the bucket list. To play a show at such a historic festival was important to us,” he says. “During lockdown, I felt like my dreams were withering – then to step onstage and have such an amazing turnout… it was surreal.”

Off the back of the set, STONE were asked to open Yungblud’s tour, which will see the band play some of the biggest venues they’ve taken on to date, including two huge hometown shows at Liverpool’s Mountford Hall. Needless to say, they’re ready to seize the opportunity with both hands. “Yungblud’s fans will be queuing from 10am, so we know there’s going to be a bunch of people dying to absorb new music,” he says. “We’re going to cater for them. I’ve always said that I want to be an underground voice for the lost youth, and I feel like Yungblud is doing that on a much larger scale.”

As Yungblud embraces his regional identity much like STONE, there’s a clear mutual respect between the artists. “You don’t get British superstars like him these days. When I first saw Yungblud, I was like, ‘Woah, this is a bit overwhelming!’. But when you see him live, you just get it – the kid is a rock star, and there’s not many of them left.”

Looking ahead, STONE’s focus is all on their live shows. Power says: “I just need to get in front of those crowds – it’s all about the live performance for us. Put me in a room with anyone and I will convert them all to fall in love with the band.” They’re confident words, but after their show tonight, you’d struggle to disagree with him.

STONE have unveiled a UK tour for October, and dropped new single ‘I Gotta Feeling’

STONE have released their new single, ‘I Gotta Feeling’.

It arrives ahead of the Liverpool band’s upcoming set at Glastonbury, and alongside news of an October tour that includes a night at London’s The Garage.

Fin Power says of the track: “‘I Gotta Feeling’ was written about when me and Alex went out on the night of the Grand National and how hostile the environment in the bars was – from people dressing like wannabee gangsters and also being upset they have lost money on the races. I walked around town with my notes app open and wrote lyrics whilst it was happening. The song also portrays how I used to relate to the ego these people have – but how liberating it is that I have escaped that toxic mentality. I feel like the song helps to show self-insight, and that lot of people will relate to it.”

Check out the track below, and catch the band on tour at the following:

STONE announce new UK tour dates alongside new single ‘Stupid’

STONE announce new UK tour dates alongside new single 'Stupid'

STONE share a new single ‘Stupid’ today, another fierce and roguish offering from the rising Liverpool four-piece, accompanied by an appropriately chaotic music video. STONE have already sold out their debut national headline tour set to kick off this weekend, which includes a 500 capacity show in their hometown.

They have now announced a second headline tour for May, which will see them take on larger venues and new cities across the country, before appearing at Summer Festivals including Boardmasters, full dates below. STONE were recently named as part of the NME 100 for 2022 and were invited by Yungblud to join his national tour late last year, amassing a legion of new fans off the back of their dynamic live show.

Of the new single, the band commented, “Stupid was captured during a period of time when we felt torn between being a child and an adult. The lyrics go deep into the youthful angst of growing up. We’ve backed this with a wall of sound and a guitar riff that almost sounds like an alarm siren letting you know how real everything is getting. The lyrics are sarcastic at times and we wanted the melody of the guitar and bass to have a groove to pace the song out. We wanted the song to feel uneasy and exciting at the same time.”

Watch the video for ‘Stupid’ – BELOW:

‘Stupid’ follows STONE’s previous single ‘ Let’s Dance To The Real Thing ’, which premiered via Steve Lamacq on BBC 6 Music, and was championed by the likes of Clara Amfo and Jack Saunders on BBC Radio 1. The band toured alongside The Blinders and Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard, and appeared at festivals including Live At Leeds, Liverpool Sound City, as well as explosive appearances as Reading & Leeds Festivals, as captured by BBC Introducing  here .

STONE are Fin Power (vocals/guitar), Sarah Surrage (bass), Elliot Gill (lead guitar) and Alex Smith (drums). Like many new young bands, STONE’s introduction to the scene has been less than conventional. Dropping their first track ‘ Leave It Out ’ shortly before national lockdown, STONE’s rite-of-passage experience of playing live shows was cut short, and their following single ‘ Fuse ’ emerged directly from that sense of stagnancy and restlessness. Despite this, STONE have quickly built a name for themselves in the North West scene, with the coming live dates set to make further waves across the UK.

What a night !!!!

It started with a great set from

Steve Pilgrim (Paul Weller’s Drummer)

He played guitar & sang to open the gig.

Then on came Stone Foundation at the Rescue Rooms Nottingham.

The boys played an extended set & the atmosphere was electric as was the performance.

One of the great small room venues which brings together the audience & the band for a SPECIAL night.

The support for the band is growing but having said that the boys were happy to stay & chat at the end of the gig.

Happy to sign vinyl or cd’s & have photos take etc, so too did Steve Pilgrim.

Hope the boys can arrange a gig at The Flower Pot next year in Derby ???

In a world of divides and conflict, Stone Foundation are the perfect antidote. Tuneful, soulful, musical, lyrical, and very danceable (even runnable, if that's your thing!)

They're a veritable cocktail of so many sounds and styles its tempting to think they are not their own band. They are. So refreshing to experience a band of real talent, genuine cohesion and who not only look like they are enjoying themselves but actually are.

When so many acts are faux and/or afraid to reference their influences you've got to love a band who give credit where its due and know just who they are, where they are and what they are trying to do: make you smile, dance and forget your woes.

Liked them from when I first saw them in Delamere in June. And again in Edinburgh. So now I've paid to see them for themselves, bought the album (on vinyl and CD) and would very happily do so again, as would my friends. They've been one of the musical highlights of my (very difficult) year. Thank you!

Brilliant venue for a brilliant band, they started with Beverley which is an old song but a classic then moved onto the last 2 albums, they are a really good band live and this is the 3rd time I have seen them.

A really tight set of musicians who are very talented the string section really adds some strength and the bass is ever present to provide the backing with a very good guitarist and singer add it all together and its a perfect mix.

The addition of 2 backing singers adds a lot to the overall sound and I cannot state how good a gig this was, I had a smile on my face throughout.

I cannot believe this band are not bigger (well I can actually it’s because of s**t like X Factor) if you haven’t listened to them I implore you to do so as you will be hooked, I have encouraged several of my friends and a couple were with me on Friday.

The venue is great as it’s quite small and intimate and afterwards they open the Ska Bar and the band came up to meet and chat which was a bonus. You couldn’t meet a more down to earth nice set of lads.

Overall a great night, a few too many beers but what a band, get on it people.

“bruising post-punk full of Scouse spirit and soul” NME

Ahead of the tour, the band will play at  Live At Leeds  festival, and headline an initial headline show at  Liverpool’s Arts Club Lof t this November, a show which sold out six months in advance.

The tour news follows STONE’s recent tour with The Blinders  and  Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard , as well as explosive appearances as  Reading & Leeds Festivals,  as captured by BBC Introducing .  Their latest single ‘ Let’s Dance To The Real Thing ’ premiered recently on  BBC 6Music  with  Steve Lamacq , and has seen further support from  Clara Amfo  on  BBC Radio 1 .

MUSICAL  STYLE: Post Apocalyptic Scally Rock

PERFECT FOR: Those who are loud and proud. Our music is for the misunderstood.

WHO: Finley Power – Alex Smith – Elliot Gill – Sarah Surrage

WHERE FROM: Band is based in Liverpool. Our only non scouse member is Sarah

STARTED PERFORMING: Each member has been at this for years but as STONE two years. Fin and Elliot met 5 years ago and started jamming under an old outfit, played a good few gigs together before Alex joined in 2018. STONE came when they decided to begin a new project in 2019 before Sarah joined in 2020 just before COVID. We have been building, writing, and recording throughout the pandemic before finally getting to deliver our sound live after September of this year, and have plans to keep going throughout 2022.

Liverpool hailing indie four-piece, STONE

STONE are Fin Power (vocals/guitar), Sarah Surrage (bass), Elliot Gill (lead guitar) and Alex Smith (drums). In true Gen Z fashion, STONE are a diffusion of the limitless cultures and subcultures they’ve had access to growing up in the digital age. Through their music, the band hope to capture the dizzying experience of youth culture in Liverpool and the paradox of their own young adulthood as they navigate the limbo between youth and maturity.

Describe your band in one sentence

Alex : Bottled up chaos, best listened to loud… Fin: A hint of northern truth and youth culture.

Elliot: Scouse racket on the edge of life.

Sarah:  Bunch of Scouse boys and a southern girl here to rip up the stage & blow ur minds.

Who influenced your musical style ?

The band have many influences musically, the four of them channelling everything they listen to from N.W.A. to Led Zeppelin. The band’s sound is a melting pot of alt-rock, punk and hip-hop delivered via northern truth. Sonically, STONE like to deliver walls of noisy guitar derived from 90s Pixies/Pumpkins-esque alt-rock and Gang Of Four-style angular post-punk, accompanied by huge Bonham-style drums and punky, driving bass. Lyrically, Fin is influenced by numerous artists such as The Streets, Dave, Joy Division and many more. STONE is a brutal, honest truth delivered from the northwest.

Share with us an interesting anecdote behind any of your songs.

‘Leave It Out’ was the birth of STONE as we know it… The track was a realisation that we had to stop pretending to be something we are not. The track was written during an intense and vulnerable period of change in all of the band members lives, this is represented within the tracks angst and emotional delivery.

If all of you are to be described as an animal, what would they be?

Sarah: I’d be a house cat because they’re nice and cuddly but can also be a bitch when necessary hahahaha.

Fin: I’d be a jellyfish because they have no brain.

Alex: Probably an ape – Cadbury’s advert vibes.

Ell – Some kind of mountain goat or ibex or something. Chilling on mountain tops and head butting everyone.

Your favourite music venue in the UK:

Ell: I think Albert Hall is gorgeous, but our dream is to play Brixton or Ally Pally. That will be a full circle moment.

Alex: Personal favourite of mine is Victoria Warehouse, big ‘n’ loud.

Sarah: Brixton Academy.

Fin: Arts Club Theatre.

You are sent to Mars, no check in baggage and you can take one record- which one ?

Ell: Pixies – ‘Doolittle’ – I was introduced to it when I was 10 and it blew my mind. I love how frantic and esoteric it sounds yet there’s such a sense of craft which I feel laid the blueprint that inspired decades of alt-rock to come. (See Nevermind by Nirvana)

Alex: Has to be Biggie’s ‘Life After Death, something about the samples used resonate with the darker/gritty side of me. ‘Kick in the Door’ is a fave.

Sarah: Gorillaz – ‘Plastic Beach’, melancholic vibes to get me through.

Fin: ‘Original Pirate Material’ – The Streets.

We are proudly Subculture inspired. How about you ?

STONE is a melting pot of multiple subcultures stemming from the band’s multiple influences. We are proud that we are inspired by other people’s individuality.

“Jesus Christ Superstar” is a rock opera and musical created by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Originally released as a concept album in 1970, it later became a stage production and a film. 36 rock and metal albums to look forward to in 2022:, slash ft. myles kennedy & the conspirators – ‘4’.

Slash ft. Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators fourth studio album , the aptly entitled '4', comes out on Friday 11th February 2022 via Gibson Records. Boasting the Planet Rock playlisted anthem 'The River Is Rising', '4' was recorded at the fabled RCA Studio A in Nashville, Tennessee with producer Dave Cobb (Rival Sons, Chris Stapleton, John Prine, Brandi Carlile), and it saw Slash and co. lay down the tracks live in the studio, including guitar solos and vocals - a first for the group.

Saxon – ‘Carpe Diem’

Barnsley metal heroes Saxon unleash their 23rd studio album 'Carpe Diem' on Friday 4th February 2022 via Silver Lining Music. Saxon's first album of original material since 2018's chart-denting 'Thunderbolt', the 10-track 'Carpe Diem' was produced by Saxon frontman Biff Byford and Judas Priest axeman Andy Sneap at Backstage Recording Studios in Derbyshire. Byford says of 'Carpe Diem': "I do think it's a very intense album, and maybe some of that intensity comes from the frustration of not being able to do anything in the Covid period."

Beth Hart – ‘A Tribute To Led Zeppelin’

Blues powerhouse vocalist Beth Hart will release her nine-track Led Zeppelin covers album , 'A Tribute To Led Zeppelin', on Friday 25th February 2022 via Provogue/Mascot Label Group. Produced by Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance), the album features Hart's reworkings of Led Zep classics including 'Stairway To Heaven', 'Good Times Bad Times', 'Kashmir', 'Black Dog' and 'Whole Lotta Love.' Hart says that recording the album during the pandemic was somewhat therapeutic, explaining: "This Zeppelin album allowed me to get all my rage out, and for that, I'm really grateful."

Scorpions – ‘Rock Believer’

German hard rock bastions Scorpions will release album no.19, 'Rock Believer', on Friday 25th February 2022. The follow-up to 2015's 'Return to Forever' was recorded in Scorpions' hometown of Hanover during the coronavirus pandemic. "The album was written and recorded in the Scorpions DNA with core Schenker/Meine compositions," says singer Klaus Meine. "We recorded the album as a band live in one room, like we did in the 80s." The album features the single 'Peacemaker', which has been a mainstay on Planet Rock's playlist since early November.

Stone Broken – ‘Revelation’

Walsall rockers Stone Broken will return with their third studio album 'Revelation' on Friday 15th April 2022. Featuring 11 tracks including the lead single and title track 'Revelation', the follow-up to 2018's chart-denting 'Ain't Always Easy' was produced by Dan Weller of progressive rock act SikTh. Frontman Rich Moss says of working with Dan Weller: "I believe that together we have produced something that me and the rest of the guys in the band are super, super proud of and we can't wait for you guys to hear it."

Rammstein – TBA

Fans of German Neue Deutsche Härte band Rammstein had to wait a decade for the release of their untitled album in 2019, however their new record looks like it's set to arrive very soon. With their mind-blowing Stadium Tour put on hold until 2022 due to the coronavirus pandemic, Rammstein have used the downtime to decamp to La Fabrique Studios in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and work on new material. In March keyboardist Christian "Flake" Lorenz confirmed they have a new record in the bag . "The fact that we couldn't perform live increased our creativity," Flake told Motor.de. "We had more time to think of new things and less distraction. As a result, we recorded an album that we hadn't planned on."

Magnum – ‘The Monster Roars’

British hard rockers Magnum are kickstarting the year in fine style by releasing their 22nd studio album 'The Monster Roars' on Friday 14th January 2022. Produced by guitarist Tony Clarkin, 'The Monster Roars' features 12 tracks including the lead singles 'I Won't Let You Down' and 'No Steppin' Stones.' Alongside the regular album, Magnum are releasing a limited box set with three extra bonus tracks - a new version of 1988 song 'Days of No Trust', a remastered version of debut single 'Sweets For My Sweet' from 1975, and a previously unreleased track from the same era.

Jethro Tull – ‘The Zealot Gene’

Progressive rock veterans Jethro Tull release their new studio album 'The Zealot Gene' via their new label home of InsideOutMusic/Sony Music in early 2022. 'The Zealot Gene' is Jethro Tull's first album since 'The Jethro Tull Christmas Album' way back in 2003 and their first record of original material this millennium – their 20th album 'J-Tull Dot Com' was released in 1999.

Kris Barras Band – ‘Death Valley Paradise’

Kris Barras Band will release their new studio album 'Death Valley Paradise' on Friday 4th March 2022 via Mascot Records/Mascot Label Group. Featuring 11 songs including the epic singles 'Dead Horses' and 'My Parade', 'Death Valley Paradise' was produced by Dan Weller and it sees Kris Barras and co. embrace heavier musical realms. "In my teens, I was pretty much only listening to hard rock and metal so it feels completely natural and free," Kris Barras says of the new direction. "More than ever, this album is me on an LP. I do think I've gone a little bit darker and deeper on it. Writing songs about topics I haven't done before."

Megadeth – ‘The Sick, The Dying… and The Dead’

Megadeth's 16th studio album 'The Sick, The Dying… and The Dead' will be unleashed in spring 2022. Dave Mustaine says the not-so-cheery title references various plagues that have blighted mankind throughout time: "A broader, more historical scope of the diseases that have plagued humankind throughout time, 'The Sick The Dying... and The Dead' covers the current virus, swine flu, and other epidemics from centuries past." The album doesn't feature long-time bassist David Ellefson who was fired from the band in May 2021 a few weeks after explicit messages and video footage involving the musician was leaked on social media.

Marillion – ‘An Hour Before It’s Dark’

Marillion will release their new studio album 'An Hour Before It's Dark' on Friday 4th March 2022 via earMUSIC. Just like its predecessor, September 2016's Top 5 album 'F--- Everyone and Run (F E A R)', 'An Hour Before It's Dark' was recorded at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios near Bath. Singer Steve 'h' Hogarth says that although the album deals with many weighty issues, 'An Hour Before It's Dark' is ultimately an upbeat record. "Despite the seemingly bleak contemplations across this album - the virus, our mortality, medical science, care, AND Leonard Cohen (ha ha) - the overall feeling of the music is surprisingly upbeat," says Hogarth. "I think the band are as on form as they ever were really, and the addition of Choir Noir has added another new soul and colour to things." The album was preceded by the nine-and-a-half-minute epic 'Be Hard On Yourself' in November.

Ozzy Osbourne – TBA

Although he's been unable to tour due to the pandemic and various health setbacks, Ozzy Osbourne has been more active in the studio recently than he has been for decades. Hot on the heels of his February 2020 album 'Ordinary Man', Osbourne has been working once again with producer Andrew Watt on album no.13 throughout the pandemic. There are guests aplenty on the record too including Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Foo Fighters' Taylor Hawkins, Metallica's Robert Trujillo, Red Hot Chili Peppers' Chad Smith and, of course, Osbourne's frequent collaborator Zakk Wylde.

Halestorm – TBA

Lzzy Hale has revealed that Halestorm have finished work on their first album since July 2018's 'Vicious.' In a November interview with US radio station 105.7 The Point, Hale lavished the album with praise, saying: "This album is absolutely a banger. It's on eleven. We have really just kind of exceeded all of the energy that has come before on these albums, both technically, music-wise, vocally, drum, lyric-wise. I think because of the roller-coaster ride when we were making this record, and just through the pandemic and all the different phases of that, we just kind of looked at each other, like, if the future is unknown and we don't know whether we're actually going to be out and playing these things, everything has to be, like I said, at eleven. It's Halestorm elevated."

Black Star Riders – TBA

In September, Black Star Riders dropped the devastating news that guitarist and founder Scott Gorham had stepped down from the band after eight years and four studio albums. The good news, however, was that the newly trimmed down four-piece BSR - Ricky Warwick (vocals, guitars) alongside Robbie Crane (bass, vocals), Christian Martucci (lead guitars, backing vocals) and Zak St. John (drums) – were cracking on with their fifth album with producer Jay Ruston. In a video update in December 2021, Ricky Warwick said the album is "sounding epic." Fingers crossed it sees the light of day in 2022!

Nita Strauss – TBA

Phenomenally talented guitarist Nita Strauss (Alice Cooper, The Iron Maidens) is preparing to unleash her second studio album in 2022 via Sumerian Records. Strauss' instrumental debut 'Controlled Chaos' was met with widespread acclaim upon its release in 2018, and the follow-up record will see her expand her musical palette with six instrumentals and six songs featuring guest vocalists. The first taster for the record, the pulsating and riff-heavy David Draiman collaboration 'Dead Inside', was unleashed in October and hints at truly great things to come from album no.2.

Alter Bridge – TBA

The unstoppable Myles Kennedy has already released a solo album in 2021 (the brilliant 'The Ides of March') and he's got the Slash ft. Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators' new album '4' coming up in February, while Mark Tremonti has recently unleashed the Tremonti album 'Marching in Time.' Despite their band members' various other ventures, Alter Bridge are primed to hit the studio this spring to start laying down their seventh album. "I think me and Myles will just get together and compare demos and hopefully be ready by April," Tremonti told Metal Talk in December. "We're working as hard as we can to get there. It's kind of a short turnaround in between solo records and Alter Bridge records." We can't wait!

Ghost – TBA

Ghost leader Tobias Forge says the follow-up album to 2018's 'Prequelle' is a concept record of sorts based on the "unescapable fails and falls of empires." Forge says he's had the idea for eight years and it's partially inspired by the book 'The Rule Of Empires: Those Who Built Them, Those Who Endured Them, And Why They Always Fall' by Timothy Parsons. On 31st October, Ghost premiered the rip-roaring tune 'Hunter's Moon' from the movie Halloween Kills. It's unclear whether the track will appear on album no.5 or it's a standalone release.

Shinedown – TBA

On New Year's Day 2022, Shinedown took to Instagram to tease their first new album since 2018's 'Attention Attention.' Alongside a 42-second video of cryptic symbols and bizarre music, Shinedown wrote: "So it begins... 😈 #nowiknowmyabcs… Do you? #SD7." Commenting on the album's themes, singer Brent Smith said in December: "Going through everything that the world went through last year, and we wrote the majority of the record last year, and this year, we couldn't turn a blind eye to everything that was going on. And we talk on this record, and we express on this record — we're not trying to dance around certain subject matter. We're trying to be very honest and very real. In a lot of ways, this is a very humanitarian record."

Tony Martin – ‘Thorns’

Former Black Sabbath vocalist Tony Martin releases 'Thorns', his first solo album in 13 years, on 14th January 2022. Musicians that appear on the 11-track record include Scott McClellan (who helped write the album), Danny "Danté" Needham (Venom), Magnus Rosén (Hammerfall) and Greg Smith (Alice Cooper, Rainbow, Blue Öyster Cult). Martin says of 'Thorns': "It's got several surprises that will lift people's eyebrows, I am sure. Largely but not entirely based around the riffs of Scott McClellan, new to the world scene, he has proved to be a worthy partner in crime for this release... I was able to make some great songs out of the riffs he was coming up with, which is very similar in the writing sense to that which I experienced with Tony Iommi. Different sound and style, but the riffing talent that someone like Scott has is very cool. It is diverse, melodic, powerful, thought-provoking and of a standard high as ever I have worked on."

Elles Bailey – ‘Shining in the Half Light'

Featuring the Planet Rock playlisted anthems 'Cheats and Liars' and 'Sunshine City' plus darkly mesmeric new single 'Stones', Elles Bailey's new album 'Shining in the Half Light' is due to land in 2022. Recorded at Middle Farm Studios in Devon with producer Dan Weller, Bailey says the album is "inspired by those who spread love in a time of heartbreak, happiness in a time of fear and connection in a time of loneliness."

Those Damn Crows – TBA

Fresh from their triumphant headline slot at Planet Rockstock, Bridgend's prodigal sons Those Damn Crows took to social media in the run up to Christmas to tease their third studio album. The band commenced recording the new record on 3rd December and just over two weeks later, they revealed all the vocals and guitars were in the can. They wrote: "We know every band says it, but we could not be more excited for you to hear these new songs."

Red Hot Chili Peppers – TBA

In an October 2021 interview with Rolling Stone coinciding with the announcement of Red Hot Chili Peppers' global stadium tour , drummer Chad Smith confirmed that the band's 12th studio album was "almost done." The record will be RHCP's first long-player with iconic guitarist John Frusciante since 2006's 'Stadium Arcadium'. He rejoined the band after a decade away in 2019. Commenting on the album's sound, Chad Smith said: "Look, John hasn't been in our group in 10 years. That's a long time. So of course, it's going to sound different, but it's gonna sound like the four of us because we do have this special chemistry together. It sounds like Red Hot Chili Peppers, but it's different and new, and to me that's great… We really like it and we're proud of it and it has to start there."

GUN – ‘The Calton Songs’

GUN's eighth studio album 'The Calton Songs' is scheduled to be released in March 2022. The album features revamped versions of GUN songs from their 33-year back catalogue including debut single 'Better Days' , which was re-released in December. The semi acoustic new version of 'Better Days' was recorded at Morsecode Studios in Glasgow and boasts backing vocals from Beverley Skeete, who has previously worked with The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd amongst many others.

Sammy Hagar & The Circle – ‘These Crazy Times’

The eponymous Sammy Hagar and his Circle band mates Jason Bonham (drums), Michael Anthony (bass) and Vic Johnson (guitars) have finished work on their second studio album, tentatively titled 'These Crazy Times'. The record was recorded with the Grammy Award winning Dave Cobb in Nashville and it's Sammy Hagar & The Circle's first album of wholly original material. "It's not a country record," Hagar said in October "(Dave Cobb is) a great producer. He's a rock guy to the bone. He just happens to produce Chris Stapleton and Brandi Carlile. Rival Sons, he produces that band too. Anyway, he's a great producer. We went in and did a whole new record with The Circle. And it's so badass, I just can't wait to get it out."

Skid Row – TBA

The New Jersey rockers are working on their new album in Nashville, Tennessee with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Rush, Halestorm) for a tentative 2022 release. It's currently unclear whether the album will be the long gestating Chapter Three of Skid Row's 'United World Rebellion' album series – a trilogy album series they kicked off with late singer Johnny Solinger in 2013 and 2014 – or a new standalone release. Set to feature the vocal talents of their new vocalist ZP Theart, Skid Row have vowed that it will be a full-length record unlike its two predecessors. Enthusing about the new album, bassist Rachel Bolan said: "We're cranking on all eight cylinders. We've got great songs we're happy with. We've got a killer producer, making a killer record. We love our label (earMUSIC)."

Steve Vai – ‘Inviolate’

Guitar virtuoso Steve Vai returns with his new studio album 'Inviolate' on 28th January 2022. Featuring nine songs including 'Little Pretty' and 'Teeth of the Hydra' (which features playing on Vai's bonkers new "steampunk" Hydra guitar), Steve Vai says 'Inviolate' contains "very honest music" and it's far removed from some of his previous records. "Because a lot of my records, they're long and there's a lot of concepts and playing around with stories. This one has none of that," Vai explains. "This is nine pretty dense all-instrumental compositions that I wanted to capture and record so I could get out there and play them live for people."

Eddie Vedder – ‘Earthling’

Not to be confused with the David Bowie album of the same name, Eddie Vedder's first solo album in 11 years, 'Earthling', will see the light of day on Friday 11th February 2022. Produced by the Grammy Award winning Andrew Watt (Ozzy Osbourne), the album features the songs 'The Haves' and the Tom Petty-esque heartlands rock anthem 'Long Way.'

Porcupine Tree – ‘Closure/Continuation’

Forward thinking progressive rockers Porcupine Tree release their first new album in 13 years, 'Closure/Continuation', on Friday 24th June 2022. Steven Wilson, Richard Barbieri and Gavin Harrison have already given us a tantalising taster for the seven-track record, the eight minute opus 'Harridan', and we can expect more genre defying brilliance from the trio when 'Closure/Continuation' lands in the summer. "Harridan and a few of the other new songs have been in play since shortly after the release of The Incident," Porcupine Tree said. "They initially lived on a hard drive in a slowly growing computer file marked PT2012, later renamed PT2015, PT2018, and so on. There were times when we even forgot they were there, and times when they nagged us to finish them to see where they would take us. Listening to the finished pieces, it was clear that this wasn't like any of our work outside of the band - the combined DNA of the people behind the music meant these tracks were forming what was undeniably, unmistakably, obviously a Porcupine Tree record."

Bernie Marsden – TBA

Whitesnake legend Bernie Marsden will release the third instalment of his 'Inspirations' album series in 2022. Released back in July, the first album in the series (and Marsden's first solo album in seven years) entitled 'Kings' paid homage to three of his blues heroes; Albert King, B.B. King and Freddie King. The November 2021 follow-up 'Chess' contained songs released on the fabled Chicago imprint Chess Records. It's currently unclear what the next instalment will be, but if 'Kings' and 'Chess' are anything to go by, it's bound to be a corker.

Slipknot – TBA

Having unleashed their critically acclaimed and chart-topping sixth album 'We Are Not Your Kind' in August 2019, Iowan masked metallers Slipknot have been working on album no.7 during the pandemic. The first fruits of their labours surfaced in November, the typically blistering and ferocious song 'The Chapeltown Rag'. The track is partially inspired by the bungled police investigation into the Yorkshire Ripper murders in the late 1970s and into 1980, and it takes its name from the Leeds suburb of Chapeltown, which was a stalking ground for Peter Sutcliffe. Slipknot percussionist Shawn 'Clown' Crahan has boldly described Slipknot's new record as "God's music."

Tony Iommi – ‘TBA’

Okay, this is a tenuous one, but fresh from releasing his blistering instrumental track 'Scent of Dark' (and accompanying cologne) in November, we're hoping his first song in a decade paves the way for a full-length album from Tony Iommi. The heavy metal torchbearer has made no secret of the fact he has an abundance of riffs laid down in his musical arsenal, and he remarked in the autumn: "I've got so many riffs; it would be great to do more instrumental and soundtrack work." If the hypothetical album scales the same heights as 'Scent of Dark', we're in for a doom-tastic treat.

Anthrax – TBA

Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante revealed last summer the legendary thrash metal band were eyeing up a 2022 release date for their 12th studio album, which will be the follow-up to 2016's 'For All Kings.' A few months later, singer Joey Belladonna said he "can't wait" to commence work on the new record and explained that Anthrax take longer to release albums than some bands as they're perfectionists at heart. "There's so much going on to the songs, we just want it to be really, really hot and heavy and strong and everything," he said.

Metallica – ‘TBA’

It's already been six years since the release of Metallica's last effort 'Hardwired... to Self-Destruct' and drummer Lars Ulrich said way back in November 2020 they were a month into "pretty serious writing" on their 11th studio album . Last September, Ulrich gave a fresh update, saying: "We're engaged. And we are creating at some level. It's way too early to talk about a record or a timeline or anything. But we're staying busy. And it's exciting to just think of the possibilities. Right now, we're so rejuvenated and just ready to get back in."

Fozzy – ‘Boombox’

Chris Jericho and co.'s first album in five years, 'Boombox' , will see the light of day on Friday 15th April 2022 via Mascot Label Group. Featuring the singles 'Nowhere to Run' and 'Sane', the record was once again produced by frequent collaborator Johnny Andrews. Typically understated, Chris Jericho said of the record: "I firmly believe this is the third best album of our entire career!! (Of course I think it's our best…but I always wanted to hear a band say that). So crank the volume and hold the Boombox up to your earholes!! It's gonna be a wild ride."

Clutch – TBA

Maryland rock behemoths Clutch revealed in November that they'd finished tracking their 13th studio album – the follow-up to 2018's 'Book of Bad Decisions.' The first taster of the record surfaced in September when the band debuted excellent new song 'Boss Metal Zone' (named after the popular distortion pedals) live. Not ones to rest on their laurels, Clutch have vowed that the as-yet-untitled album will explore "different" musical realms.

Bruce Dickinson - TBA

In a January 2022 interview with Loudwire, Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson said he's planning to join forces with frequent collaborator Roy Z in the spring to work on his first new album since 2005's 'Tyranny of Souls.' Bruce said: "We've already got a bunch of material — demos and everything — but we need to organise it a bit more properly and be a bit more serious about it. (We have to) maybe write a few more tunes and then basically leave it down to Roy. He can go off and start doing backing tracks and things like that."

Balmoral Castle

Tea and a tour of Balmoral Castle? That will set you back £150

For the first time visitors will be able to see areas of the Scottish castle used by Charles and Camilla – if they have deep pockets

Parts of Balmoral Castle used by the royal family will open to the public for the first time – for those who have deep pockets.

For £100 for an adult ticket – and an extra £50 for those wishing to partake of afternoon tea – guided summer tours of the castle in Aberdeenshire are being offered, limited to 40 people a day and in groups restricted to 10 people.

It is the first time since the castle’s completion in 1855 that visitors will be shown two dining rooms, the drawing room, the page’s lobby and the red corridor, where King Charles greeted Rishi Sunak.

The tour also includes access to the ballroom with a collection of Charles’s watercolour collection depicting scenery at Balmoral, Highgrove and Sandringham as well as a selection of outfits worn by Charles, Camilla, the late queen and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Previous tours, which will continue, have been of the grounds and gardens with access to the castle itself limited to the ballroom.

The tours, from 1 July until 4 August, before the king and queen arrive for their annual break, are being run for a trial period so estate staff can judge how the fragile building copes with increased footfall.

The £150 a head price tag for tour and high tea makes it the most expensive royal residence for visitors wanting the exclusive experience.

Buckingham Palace, which has long been open to the public during the summer months, charges £95 for an exclusive guided tour away from the crowds, though general summer admission with the masses costs between £32 and £35. Afternoon tea is not included, but at the nearby Ritz, the “afternoon tea experience” costs from £64.

St James’s Palace, which started guided tours in 2022 limited to 30 people, costs £80 for an adult. At the cheaper end of royal residence visits, Windsor Castle offers general adult admission at £30 in advance, while Sandringham House in Norfolk costs £24 and the Castle of Mey, the queen’s mother’s former Scottish home, is £14.50.

The Balmoral Castle website said experienced guides on the interior tour “will take you on a historical journey through several of the beautiful rooms within Balmoral Castle”.

It adds: “Travel through time from the purchase of the Balmoral by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, through to present day, where you can see how rooms within the castle are used today.”

50 years on from Waterloo, Abba Voyage rightfully places legendary band in unique hall of fame

Abba Voyage concert

50 years ago Saturday, a Swedish group changed the face of pop music forever.

And in 2024, there is no better way of truly understanding their influence than at the Abba Arena in East London .

The mere idea of Abba Voyage would have been nothing more than the most far-fetched reaches of sci-fi when Abba first stepped on stage at Eurovision 1974 in Brighton.

Now, watching the Abba-tars perform on stage and talk to audiences between songs, it feels like we’ve invented a time machine.

On Saturday night I headed to Pudding Mill Lane with 3,000 other Abba fans (and one person who declared he didn’t even like Abba, was simply in awe of the technology), to watch Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson at the height of their fame.

It wasn’t my first time at Abba Voyage, but the same goosebumps crept up my arms as the lights shone on the four figures on stage, and remained through the breathtaking 90 minutes of music, moving through all the eras of their iconic career.

The Abba Voyage concert from the outside

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video

And it all goes back to the beginning: dressed in the iconic sparkling outfits, an Abba-tar recalls performing Waterloo in Brighton and how, shockingly, the UK awarded them nil points .

The thousands-strong crowd let out a roar of boos, horrified that such a thing could ever have happened.

Because there’s really no one as iconic as Abba: their songs have sparked musicals performed all over the world, star-studded films, and now a groundbreaking futuristic experience unlike anything that’s ever come before.

The Abba voyage concert viewed from the audience

There are rumours Voyage will be heading to the US and beyond, but a spokesperson assured Metro.co.uk that even if this happens, it will still remain in London.

And thank God for that, because two years on from the opening night in Pudding Mill Lane, the appetite for Abba Voyage is still insatiable: almost everyone I spoke to on the night had been there for the second, third or fourth time, and I’m already looking forward to the next outing.

You also never know who you’ll bump into at a night at Abba Voyage: Saturday night saw Rylan Clark, Mae Muller, Conchita Wurst and Bambie Thug among the revellers, and even Louis Theroux was spotted bopping away to Voulez Vous.

Eurovision is still iconic, but no one before or since has ever had the same impact as Abba did 50 years ago.

Voyage rightfully places them in an individual hall of fame that no other music act can claim.

If you’ve been on the fence or putting off going, this is your sign: Abba Voyage is an utterly unique experience paying tribute to an utterly unique band.

And as soon as the lights come on at the end of the show, you’ll already be planning your next trip, all the way back to Waterloo 1974.

Modest Mouse Plot ‘Good News’ Tour, New Album

By Brian Hiatt

Brian Hiatt

Modest Mouse ‘s Isaac Brock has been known to take as long as eight years between albums, but nearly three decades into his band’s career, he’s ready to pick up the pace. Three years after the release of the well-received The Golden Casket , he’s already recorded enough songs for a new Modest Mouse album with producers including Jacknife Lee and Dave Sardy, and intends to put one out by next spring. “In my early days of putting out records, I wrote music every fucking day,” he tells our Rolling Stone Music Now podcast. “And then sometime after The Moon and Antarctica , I spent less time and then I spent less time and less time, and then gaps got big and I didn’t like that. So, yeah, I’m happy to be back to writing every day again.”

The interview centers around the 20th anniversary of Modest Mouse’s classic major-label breakthrough, Good News for People Who Love Bad News (which has an expanded reissue out now), and Brock also reveals that he’s tentatively planning a tour for the fall featuring the original band that played on that album, including drummer Benjamin Weikel, who filled in for the late Jeremiah Green. “It’s the only record where I can do a tour with all the living members, all the exact same members,” he says, acknowledging that he’s still figuring out how to fill out the rest of the set list.
