New Ownership

We are thrilled to announce that cable beach camels is now under new ownership.

We’re eager to embark on this journey with you! As the YELLOW camels dot the beachscape, we bring a fresh wave of enthusiasm and dedication to ensure unforgettable experiences for our guests.

Del, our loving cameleer, brings 25 years of expertise rooted in a deep-seated love for these magnificent creatures. Her journey began with a  transformative ride on Harold Canard’s camels in Silverton, NSW. Since then, Del has dedicated herself to educating camel owners through specialized training schools, ensuring the well-being of these gentle giants. In addition, Del operates a sanctuary for rescue camels where she continues to work with Harold to rehabilitate these beautiful creatures.

CHOOSE YELLOW

Our camels have been walking on cable beach since 1992..

Our camels were part of the ORIGINAL operators of Camel Tours in Broome, and played an integral part in putting this ICONIC tour on Cable Beach on the map in the late 90’s.

CAble Beach CAmels

Why choose yellow, part of putting broome on the map.

Our camels were part of the original tour operators of Camel Tours in Broome on Cable Beach. We helped Broome gain international popularity with camel riding on Cable Beach to be known as one of the icons of Broome.  With us, you can take a camel tour on Cable Beach with some of the original guided camels. Choose yellow for the best camel tour in Broome.

Our camels have Over 25 years of Camel Tourism experience!

Whether it be local or overseas tourism projects, breeding or racing, the animals are carefully selected according to their temperament, body type and age and are trained to suit their purpose.  With our knowledge and love of these remarkable animals your camel tour on magnificent Cable Beach will be one to be remembered.

Bring your own camera and we will take photos for you.

Our camels are an interesting mix of colours because they have come from four different regions. As a result, they are all quite different looking from each other in colour and physical characteristics.

This interesting variety of colours stands out in contrast against their gold saddle blankets with black saddles and halters. Through the camera lens, especially at Sunset they are extremely photogenic.

Where to meet for your Cable Beach Camels Tour

Tour Location

Where to meet..

We meet on the 4WD access beach.

Walk past sunset bar onto the beach, turn right, walk past the rocks, then continue walking 300 meters up the beach until you see the yellow truck. We are the 3rd set of camels and we are dressed in YELLOW.

Cable Beach Camel Tours

Camel rides on cable beach in broome, frequently asked questions, how do i get on and off the camel.

As part of our commitment and compliance to safe work practices, our policy is to give careful safety instructions to all patrons prior to commencement of our tour.  For example you will be shown the correct manner of mounting and dismounting the camel prior to being seated – we have people to assist you. Our ramp not only makes it easier for you to climb onboard, it is also easier for the camels.

Why is there a weight limit of 90kgs per person?

Camels, whilst powerful animals, work most days on the beach.  As part of our commitment to the ongoing optimal health and safety of our animals we have introduced the weight limit of 90kg per person.  This limit is well within their lifting capacity, thus keeping their backs strain free, comfortable and happy; as a result we are very strict on this weight limit and we thank you in advance for your appreciation of our caring for our animals.

What time does my tour begin?

Can my child sit in my lap.

Yes, small children under 15kg will be seated in the lap of a parent or known adult.

Do camels carry water in their hump?

No they do not.  The hump is usually full of fat; whilst there is a bit of fluid mixed within the fat, the size of a camel’s hump is a reflection of the camel’s condition – the bigger the hump the fatter the camel.

Your guide to the iconic camel rides in Broome

Time

Broome and camel rides go hand-in-hand, here’s what to expect.

There are many tourist traps around the world, and one can’t help but be a little sceptical when everyone is talking about an experience like Broome camel rides. The thing is, I actually loved it.

The camels are (mostly) chill, the tour leaders are very friendly and the views are incredible. For me, it was 40 minutes of rhythmic heaven that made me feel like I’d really experienced Broome – besides which the history of camels in Broome is so fascinating that becoming part of it is truly a bucket list item.

Where can you ride camels in Broome?

Cable Beach is the one and only place to take a camel ride in Broome, and frankly, you couldn’t hope for a more peaceful backdrop. All tour operators will meet guests on the beach, close to Cable Beach Resort & Spa .

Best time of day to ride camels

While a sunset tour is obviously the iconic imagery you’ve seen (as it should be, the oranges, pinks and purples of Cable Beach sunsets are honestly out of this world) and are always booked out weeks in advance, you really shouldn’t discount a morning tour.

On a sunset tour, you’ll get the incredible colours of a WA sunset, and get to watch the beach come to life as others flock to it. Your photos will be incredible, and you will most definitely have social media bragging rights.

However, on a morning tour, you’ll avoid the heat and the crowds. If you’re booking at the last minute, there will most likely still be a spot open, unlike at sunset. Overall, it’s a far more peaceful experience and the vistas are still ‘gram-worthy with 22 kilometres of unusually straight beach stretching out before you. It’ll also be cheaper.

What to expect on a camel ride

Camels have a reputation for being on the grumpy side, but these ones are (mostly) very well-trained, and seemingly unbothered by carting around random tourists. Having said that, operators may include a less-trained camel in the string to help get them used to it.

This is exactly what happened on my tour and the woman behind me had a minor freakout when her camel broke ranks – an understandable reaction but to be fair it wasn’t really a big deal and he was tied back up in no time. Camels are tied in a line and the group will always have a tour operator leading the sting, walking alongside and bringing up the rear, so they’re ready for mishaps.

a group camel ride on a straight line

The camels are usually pretty good at following the leader. (Image: Kassia Byrnes)

On that note, tour operators will ask for your weight beforehand to make sure none of the camels are given more to carry than they can safely handle, and there are weight limits.

Getting on and off the camels has become almost luxurious now as well, with mounting platforms on the back of operator trucks so you can swing a leg over your camel without the poor thing having to sit down and perform the famously awkward standing back up with you on it.

Top tours to book a camel ride

Traditionally, camel tour operators in Broome have a frosty coexistence. The long-running “camel wars” reached a truce in February 2011 after years of feuding over camel licenses involving public acrimony, slashed tyres, nude photos and even the throwing of camel dung.

After one court ruling allowed all operators the right to conduct business, and another convicted a former cameleer of theft and burglary with a sizeable fine to boot, peace seems to have been restored.

This means that these days you’re welcome to choose from the three current operators without issue.

Red Sun Camels

Red Sun Camels are easy to spot on the beach thanks to their bright red saddle blankets. They operate a morning, sunset and shorter 30-minute pre-sunset tour nearly every day.

For the safety of their camels, they do have a 95-kilo weight limit per person, and a 170-kilo limit power camel (all saddles have two seats).

Staff are bubbly, friendly and really seem to love what they do – even the brand-new staff member from Germany on my tour who never really planned to be working there but now doesn’t want to leave.

The staff will also gladly help you take photos during the tour, going to lengths to get the good angles for you.

Broome Camel Safaris

Operating from Monday to Saturday Broome Camel Safaris , claim to have Broome’s friendliest camels, under the tutelage of Broome’s original camel lady, Alison Bird. While she’s not the only one claiming this title, she did trek through the Australian Outback alone with her camels for more than seven years, so it’s safe to say she knows what she’s doing.

They’re currently not doing morning tours but are running afternoon and sunset tours. They’re also a great option if you’d like to organise a bespoke tour for your own group.

Included in the price of a tour is a free pair of freshwater pearl sterling-silver earrings from local Broome designer, Dahlia Designs for ladies.

Sundowner Camel Tours

Look out for the yellow saddle mats with red trimming and you’ll find Sundowner Camel Tours .  As one of the first camel tour operators on Cable Beach back in the ‘90s, owner Steve Madden and his team are very happy to share their wealth of knowledge about camel’s character, physiology and nature during your tour.

Also offering afternoon and sunset tours only, they have a weight limit of 90 kilos per seat and will hand out a complimentary beer, wine or water at the end of every tour. They’ll also be glad to take photos for you on your own camera.

Broome Camel Safaris Review 2024: Locals Guide to the Best Two

' src=

Three operators offer camel rides in Broome, so which one should you choose? I researched the tour operators thoroughly before deciding which camel ride to book, so you don’t have to. This article compares the top two camel rides to help you decide which is best for you.

In  Australia’s North West  region, Broome is known for its Cable Beach (22 kilometers of white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters).  Here camel ride companies offer tourists the opportunity to experience the area’s beauty from a different perspective. It is one of the most popular  things to do in Broome .

This post may contain affiliate links (of companies I book through). This means I may receive a small commission if you book through them. You can read the disclaimer for more information.

Comparing Camel Rides in Broome Western Australia

Three companies operate camel rides in Broome; Broome Camel Safaris, Red Sun Camels, and Sundowner Camel Tours. However, I would book either Broome Camel Safaris or Red Sun Camels.

Red Sun Camels

⭐️ Rating: 4.6/5 ⏰  Tour Start Times:  7:50am, 4pm, 4:50pm ⏳  Tour Lengths:  30-60 mins   Check Rates and Availability

Red Sun Camels began in 1991 but were purchased by John and Janet Geappen in 2000, who now have over 40 camels. The couple opened the Camel Store in Broome in 2007, where you can purchase camel-related products.

Red Sun Camels have red blankets and offer a sunset tour, a pre-sunset sampler tour, and a morning tour. They have a strict 100 kg maximum per person and two people ride each camel. If you have a child on your lap (0 to 4 years), you jointly cannot exceed the 100 kg limit. As with Broome Camel Safaris, the combined weight of two passengers cannot exceed 170 kg. Child rates apply for 5 to 15-year-olds.

There are a variety of tours, but their signature is the “Sunset Safari.” Lasting about an hour, this tour is timed perfectly to capture the sunset over the Indian Ocean. As the sky transitions through a kaleidoscope of colors, you’ll be riding atop one of Red Sun’s well-trained, gentle camels, each with its own name and personality. Broome Camel Safaris

⭐️ Rating: 4.6/5 ⏰  Tour Start Times:  3:45pm, 4:45pm ⏳  Tour Lengths:  30-60 mins   Check Rates and Availability

Alison Bird profoundly cares for her camels, has trained them, and brought up orphan calves from the wild. Alison and her husband, Allen, now have over 30 camels which are all loved. They have a strict 90kg per person weight limit policy, with a combined weight of two passengers not exceeding 170 kg. Children are between five and fifteen but must not weigh more than 60 kg; otherwise will be charged as adults. Children up to four years old can sit on an adult’s lap.

You can tell their camels by the blue blankets. They offer morning, afternoon, and sunset camel rides on Cable Beach, and every lady receives a pair of freshwater pearl earrings.

The most popular holiday activity is the one hour sunset camel ride , where you get to give your camel a carrot at the end.

The 30-minute pre-sunset tour is great value if you prefer a shorter ride. It also allows you to take photos of the camel train at sunset.

The rave reviews speak volumes. Visitors consistently praise the knowledgeable guides , the friendly camels , and the unforgettable views . One reviewer mentioned, “It’s more than just a ride; it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that connects you with nature and these incredible animals.”

Maximum Weight Limit of Camel Rides in Broome

There are maximum weight restrictions for camel rides in Broome to safeguard the health of these animals.

Broome Camel Safari has a 90kg weight limit, and Red Sun Camels has a 100kg limit per adult. Child weight limits are 60 kg, and a couple cannot exceed 170 kg.

Camel Rides in Broome: My Review

My top two camel ride operators have excellent reviews and the prices are similar. We ended up choosing Red Sun Camels, but Broome Camel Safaris looked good too.

Pre Sunset Camel Ride Tour

I opted for the Broome pre-sunset ride as I thought a 30-minute ride would be long enough and wanted to be on this beautiful beach to take photos of the camel trains at sunset. It was also cheaper for our family of four, and you still have the same experience, although not at sunset.

Also, this end of Cable Beach gets very busy around sunset, and lots of 4wd vehicles park and drive along the beach. However, the camels do go further up the beach.

The camel ride operators are easy to find. Turn right at the rocks from the main access point on Cable Beach and look for your chosen tour operator’s colour. Make sure you leave plenty of time to get there, though, as they won’t wait and will leave without you.

Upon arrival, we were offered a complimentary drink of a beer, sparkling wine (thank you very much), or water. Once signed in, we relaxed on the beach while waiting for the rest of the group to arrive.

We spotted the camels approaching soon, and they were brought alongside a Ute, used as a loading platform to make it easier to get off and on the camels. I believe Red Camels are the only operator to offer this at this stage.

ute on cable beach used to get people on and off the camels

We then had to gather around to decide who goes on what camel and with whom. The guides try to keep families together.

Soon it was our time to climb the steps onto the platform and wait for the camel to come alongside. It was an easy swing of the leg over, and off we went.

It felt bumpy to start with, but we soon got used to the feeling and enjoyed a gentle ride along the white sands of Cable Beach . During the ride, the friendly guides told us the name of our camel and how she became part of their camel train.

The friendly camels were constantly coming alongside for a pat and a stroke. They are adorable animals with long eyelashes and don’t smell at all (or spit).

On the return part of the journey, the staff uses your camera to take photos of you on the camel, so you have a memory of it all free of charge. There were options to buy professional photos too.

Before we knew it, the ride was over, and we were back alongside the loading platform to dismount the camel.

We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and found the pre-sunset tour perfect. I didn’t find it uncomfortable, but I might have after an hour.

Add camel rides in Broome to your bucket list; it’s a true Broome iconic experience and great fun for the family.

Camel Information & Facts

There are two types of camels; Arabian Camel (Dromedary) and Bactrian Camel. The Dromedary camels have one hump and are the ones found in Broome. They live to about 25 years old in the wild, but Domestic camels can live up to 40 years old.

These animals can grow to 7 feet at the hump and weigh 1600 pounds. Their hump stores fat which can be broken down into energy when food is scarce. They hardly sweat, so they don’t require much water. The domestic ones will drink around 25 litres daily, but a thirsty camel can drink 115 litres in 13 minutes.

Unlike most animals, when walking, the camel moves both feet on one side of its body, then both feet on the other.

History of Camels in Australia

Camels were introduced from India and Afghanistan into Australia in the 19th Century to help with transport and workloads. Muslim cameleers were brought in to service the South Australian outback and soon began their own businesses importing and running camel trains. It is estimated that around 15,000 camels were imported into Australia at that time. The handlers were known as Afghans or Ghans, from which the train, The Ghan , gets its name.

After the arrival of motorised transport, camels weren’t required and so were released into the wild. Here they thrived, and today Australia has the world’s largest population of feral camels. This has become a problem for outback communities where they destroy fences and pipes and drink the waterholes dry. The government funded a culling program that killed around 160,000 camels from 2009 to 2013.

So you could say that these camel ride companies are saving the camels from death. I’m not a supporter of animal tourism when the animals suffer. However, these are well looked after; they are fed and watered, there is a weight limit for passengers, and they only work two to three times a day.

Best Time to Visit Broome for Camel Safaris

The best times to visit Broome for camel safaris are during the dry season, which typically spans from April to October . Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect during these months:

  • April to June: This period marks the transition from the wet to the dry season. The weather is more comfortable, and the landscape is green from the recent rains. It’s an ideal time for those who prefer milder temperatures and fewer crowds.
  • July to August: These are the peak tourist months in Broome. The weather is dry and cool, making it perfect for outdoor activities like camel safaris. However, it’s also the busiest time, so booking tours in advance is recommended.
  • September to October: As the dry season comes to an end, the temperatures start to rise, but it’s still a great time for camel safaris. The sunsets are particularly spectacular during these months, offering a breathtaking backdrop for evening rides.

My Helpful Tips for First-Time Camel Rifers

  • Wear Comfortable Clothing: Opt for light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing (long pants to prevent chafing). Wear closed-toe shoes for better support or ide bare-foot as I did.
  • Listen to the Guide: Pay attention to the instructions provided by your guide for mounting, riding, and dismounting the camel.
  • Stay Relaxed: Camels can sense if you’re tense. Stay calm and relaxed, especially during the mount and dismount, as camels stand up and sit down front legs first. Note that Red Camels mount via a ute so the camels don’t have to bend down.
  • Hold on Securely: Use the saddle handle to hold on when the camel is moving, but avoid gripping too tightly.
  • Sit Upright: Maintain a straight posture with your weight balanced. Leaning can make the ride uncomfortable for both you and the camel.
  • Be Prepared for Height: Camels are taller than horses, so be ready for a higher perspective.
  • Use Sun Protection: Apply sunscreen and wear a hat, as you’ll be exposed to the sun for the duration of the ride.
  • Avoid Sudden Movements: Quick movements can startle the camel. Move smoothly and follow the camel’s rhythm.
  • Capture Memories: Bring a camera or phone to take photos, but make sure it’s secure.
  • Respect the Animal: Remember that camels are living creatures. Treat them with respect and kindness.

The camel behind us was pretty vocal but my 6 year old just said it was scared of the sea and chatted to it the whole way round.
