A pretty village at the southern tip of greenland, information about narsarmijit & tasermiut fjord.

Pretty Greenland village at the southern tip of Greenland that was the easternmost of the Norse settlements during their colonization of Greenland, with remains in the area (most settlements were on the south-west coast).

The fjords are great to explore including Tasermiut Fjord with the largest hanging glacier in southern Greenland, with World challenging big walls for climbing such as Ulamertorsuaq and Nalumasortoq.

Kangilinnguit

The main Danish naval base in Greenland, plus various quarries in the region, with interesting geology, and the ‘ghost’ mining town of Ivittut. Arsuk Fjord is an attractive fjord to explore with a tidewater glacier in south-west Greenland, and for Musk Ox (introduced in SW Greenland), White-tailed Eagles and other wildlife.

Narsarsuaq & Qaqortoq

This area of deep fjords and lush scenery was probably the area where that the Vikings came up with the name of Greenland, and where first church in the New World was built.

Icebergs contrast with the verdant landscape that is great explore. Qaqortoq is South Greenland’s largest town with lots of colourful houses. It is also a good area to see White-tailed Eagles and other Greenland wildlfe.

Greenland’s largest city and capital that is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, at the mouth of an extensive fjord system. Great to explore the city and the surrounding tundra and fjords, with lovely sunset views from Myggedalen.

Richly coloured houses in this small village situated on a small island close to the ocean. Behind there is a backdrop of vertical mountains and deep fjords.

Skjoldungen

Large Island, mid-way along the south-east coast, in an area with numerous fjords coming down from the icecap, and some of the best landscapes in SE Greenland.

Uninhabited today, it was used by nomadic people for thousands of years with the remains of Inuit dwellings here. A harsh area to survive in, the Vikings never settled this stretch of coast. Tidewater glaciers calve into the fjords for great ship and Zodiac cruising.

Tasiilaq & Kulusak

Tasiilaq is the largest town in south-east Greenland, close to the mouth of the rugged and long Sermilik Fjord. With the ice sheet just to the west the Sermilik glacier carves numerous icebergs. Kulusak is nearby and with an airport is popular with the short flight from Iceland.

Area good for the landscape, whale watching, the wildlife, and the flora.

Uninhabited island on the south-west coast close to the southern tip of Greenland that overlooks icebergs and can be a good spot for Humpback Whales. There are also hot springs nearby, the remains of Innuit settlements, and the chance to see White-tailed Eagle.

Tasermiut fjord tour, nanortalik, greenland.

Cruise the sheltered waters of Tasermiut Fjord and marvel at the extraordinary scenery along this waterway that stretches deep into southwestern Greenland. You will travel into the fjord’s mouth near Nanortalik and continue on into a natural wonderland of steep-walled mountains, snow-capped peaks and gorgeous vistas that seem to go on forever. Thousands of Norse Vikings settled this area in the 10th century and remnants of their stone buildings still stand in the stark treeless landscape. Today, dozen sheep farms blanket much of the suitable terrain.

You will also pass landmarks such as Nuugaarsuk Point on the fjord’s eastern shore and Saputit, an inlet whose name refers to the stone weirs that the indigenous Inuits built to hold fish. If the conditions permit, you will have the opportunity to disembark and walk on the surrounding ice cap. Be sure to keep an eye out for wildlife such as ringed seals, minke whales and white-tailed eagles.

Our first organized trips in southern Greenland, back in 1997, were “only” the kayaking routes from Narsarsuaq to the Qaleraliq glacier fronts. Since those hard beginnings, Tasermiut South Greenland Expeditions has been growing slowly but steadily and today we are the leading adventure travel tour operator throughout South Greenland, covering the triangle area formed by Narsarsuaq, Arsuk and Kap Farvel.

First of all, we would like to refer to our tour programs, which are based on years of experience and exploration in areas of southern Greenland that, in many cases, no one had stepped before. Our trips are inspired by the spirit of polar exploration but can be undertaken by any nature lover. Either by kayak, using crampons, skis or, definitely, by foot, all our routes are conducted in small groups (from 1 to 12 max) and have been designed to take full advantage of the days of our travelers in Greenland.

About our own logistics in South Greenland, the few kayaks that we had in 1997, have now become a big logistics network that allows us to operate many groups of travelers at the same time. This infrastructure includes our fleet of speed boats, cosy hostels in the most awesome spots (Narsaq, Qassiarsuk and Tasiusaq), office (Narsarsuaq), storage for kayak material (Narsaq), 4×4 cars and permanent dome camps located in the most remote and stunning areas of southern Greenland, including the Qaleraliq glacier fronts or the Big Walls of the Tasermiut fjord.

The secret of this success has to do with the incredible nature of southern Greenland -probably the best area of the entire country for hiking around glacier tongues and kayaking among icebergs- but also with the job of our people. From the manager to the guides, the staff of South Greenland Expeditions is composed by enthusiasts of Greenland who enjoy to show Greenland, a multinational Team of Leaders -english, spanish, french, german and italian speaking- for whom safety comes first.

Tasermiut Camp | Nanortalik | South Greenland

Venture into Tasermiut fjord and experience, explore and examine wonders of the arctic.

Tasermiut Ford is well-known for its spectacular beauty. With its sky high mountains, reflecting themselves in the still waters of the fjord, the inhabitants have crowned it as a wonder of the arctic.

Come along this mesmerizing sailing adventure, paired with camping in Tasermiut Fjord. Combining the two makes for great adventures, as you can explore as much as you want, without thinking of time and tides!

This tour is for any one whole loves the arctic, from the raw, naked and steep mountain sides to the Gree nland Ice cap.

You will set out on your adventure from Nanortalik. In Tasermiut fjord, you will explore, experience and examine the Greenland Ice cap, Kuusuaq forest and Tasiusaq. The arctic tundra will be your home for the night, as you camp in the wild, wonderful and vast Greenland wilderness.

The itinerary is described below.

Tasermiut fjord.

Venture into Tasermiut fjord and experience a wonder of the arctic.

Your adventure starts at harbour, where you will be met by your tour captain. From here you will get friendly with the security precautions that apply sea adventures, and be briefed of the schedule for the next 2 days.

The first destination of the day will be the settlement Tasiusaq. In its ow n little bay, lies the colorful and charming settlement, surrounded by sky high and peaky mountain tins. Take your time to explore and experience Greenlandic culture. Chat with one of the 80 locals, before moving on to the next destination of the day.

You will venture deeper into Tasermiut Fjord. Tasermiut fjord is not inhabited, but holds its very own forest. Kuussuaq forest resembles a canvas of beautiful green trees, surrounded by sky high mountain tins with white powder resting at their tins. Explore the forest, if Interested in arctic flying wildlife , explore the birdlife in the forest. The ice free zones of South Greenland should be covered by forest by 2100. Leave a trace of your existence to be found in 2100!

After you have explored, experienced and examined Kuussuaq forest, you will head to a branch of the Greenland Ice cap. When arriving at the glacier, you will overwhelmed with its enormous size. But this branch is yet a small part of the Greenland ice cap, that covers 80 % of the country. Stand in the blue and white nuanced rays of the soaring glacier, while the arctic winds long to play with your hair. It is a unique and once in a lifetime experience, that will drain you emotionally with its beauty. If you touch the Ice cap, you will be rewarded with a cup of something good!

Last stop of the day will be at Ketil Mountain, that will home you and your fellow explorers for the night. The foot of Ketil Mountain, is famous for holding Norse ruins, and is yours for the night to explore. Enjoy dinner under the open sky with lamb or your self-caught fish - served with Greenlandic commodities.

You will be entertained by the actor and multi talent Miki Thomsen. He will preform with music, drum dancing and ancient Greenlandic myths and tales.

Return To Nanortalik

You wake up in your camp. Take the last of your adventure, to explore the surrounding arctic tundra. The arctic tundra in the south, is famous for its fruitful plains and mesmerizing views! As you hike the plains, let the arctic winds flow between your finger tips!

When returning to Nanortalik, you will travel the same way you came. Tasermiut fjord, never sto ps to impress. Enjoy the beautiful fjord, with its peaky mountains reflecting the waters!

When arriving in Nanortalik again, you will be giver a voucher for a free Greenlandic coffee at Cafe 44.

• It is cold at sea, therefore bring warm clothes. Dress after the weather conditions. The trip can be cancelled, due to bad weather or mechanical boat problems.

Klosterdalen

Uiluit Qaqqaa also known as Ketil Mountain together with Nalumasortoq and Ulamertorsuaq are a group of three walls of rocky mountains. Beneath those massive mountains, therein lies Klosterdalen (Monastery Valley). In the old age of Viking era, Nordic settlers came to this place and left us ruins including what once was a Monastery hence the name Monastery Valley.

This particular place is famous for its mountains once formed by the glaciers and for a reason, attracts a lot of trekkers and climbers and simply put this place is a pure miracle formed by the nature itself that you would just stop and applaud the nature for a place like this. I believe these Nordic settlers had the same thought and chose this place.

The last destination of the day will be a branch of the Greenland ice cap. When arriving at the glacier, you will be overwhelmed with its enormous size. We are a new tourist company with the main goal to do guided tours around South Greenland, primarily near Nanortalik. We offer many different package trips with our own boat with room up to 6 passengers.

We love our country and would like to present South Greenland in the best possible way to our dear guests. It is also no coincidence that we employ 4 local guides with deep Greenlandic roots who knows the local area and its history. Tasermiut camp is our main attraction, it is an overnight camping trip in the fjord.

The trip begins with visiting Tasiusaq, a small charming settlement in the area of Tasermiut.

Next stop is the forest which lies beneath a beautiful mountain near the creek Kuussuaq.

Last trip goes to the edge of the ice cap before going to our camp site for the overnight stay. In the evening after dinner there will be entertainment in the form of musical drum dance and theatrical tales of old mythical Greenlandic legends, with the famous Ketil mountain in the background, it is an experience of a life time.

Food, tents and sleeping bags are included.
