I Went to Opening Weekend of the Eras Tour — Here's What to Wear to Taylor Swift's Concert

On March 18, I buzzed with excitement in a crowd of nearly 70,000 fans eagerly counting down the seconds (literally — a giant clock ticked on screen) until Taylor Swift walked onstage for her second show of the wildly-anticipated Eras Tour . Three hours and 13 minutes later, I was basking in the blissful aftermath of an epic 44-song setlist from the music icon.

But before that, I thought long and hard about what to wear to a Taylor Swift concert I'd been daydreaming about for years. With four new albums and two re-recordings released since her last tour, the options were endless. Should I dress for her latest era, the glimmering, moody Midnights , wander back into the whimsical woods in honor of Folklore and Evermore , embrace the bubblegum pink wonderland of Lover , or pay tribute to Red (Taylor's Version) in loafers and, well, red?

The countless Taylor Swift concert outfit ideas might seem overwhelming, but after attending the first stop on the Eras Tour, I can tell you this: You'll see a little bit of everything (and a lot of sparkles.) Some Swifties threw it back to Fearless in cowboy boots , others wore heart-covered tulle dresses, and one dedicated fan even covered herself head-to-toe in ivy in honor of the Evermore track.

Swift's latest album, Midnights, evokes a '70s haze, if you will, with purple eyeshadow, tousled hair, and shag coats. For the final portion of her Eras Tour setlist, the "Anti-Hero" singer wore two outfits: a sparkly T-shirt dress topped with a lavender fur jacket that was dripping in crystals and a bejeweled dark purple fringe leotard, both worn with knee-high Christian Louboutin rhinestone boots.

While you might not go that extra (or designer), the color palette is an easy place to start. I opted for these lavender metallic wide-leg trousers and this sparkly ruched cowl neck tank top , both under $25 at Cider. Folklore and Evermore , released just four months apart in 2020, took us deep into the trees where moss grew on pianos and braided buns were a must. While Swift sang songs like "Marjorie" and "Champagne Problems" during the Eras Tour, she donned a dreamy mustard maxi dress with a tiered skirt, ruffled shoulders, and gold accents. For slow burns like "Cardigan" and "Invisible String," the 12-time Grammy winner laid on the roof of a cabin and twirled around in a billowy cream maxi .

With pop anthems like "Cruel Summer" and the album's titular swoony ballad, Lover is the Taylor Swift album fans have been waiting to hear live since 2019. This lovestruck era was all about pink, pastel tie-dye, and fringe jackets. During the second night of the Eras Tour, Swift made a splash in her opening outfit, a custom Atelier Versace bodysuit covered in blue and gold rhinestones and silver knee-high boots by Christian Louboutin. She coyly layered a matching rhinestone Versace blazer on top for her cheeky performance of "The Man."

Before there was the starry-eyed Taylor seeing life through rose-colored glasses, we had the all-black-clad, hooded, narrow-eyed snake, aka Reputation -era Taylor . The showstopping one-legged Roberto Cavalli catsuit featured red snakes slithering down her body and black sequins that resembled scales.

With 1989 , Taylor ditched her country roots and dove headfirst into pop music — and her "red-lipped, classic" style reflected that shift. Taylor looked like a real-life princess in a Zuhair Murad ball gown fitting for a castle while she sang "Enchanted." I got tickets to Taylor Swift's Era's tour, and am trying to decide what era I should go as. . I can't wait to see what Taylor Swift's concert outfits are for this tour!

What do I wear to a Taylor Swift concert? Especially to the Eras tour?

Attendees are planning to wear outfits inspired by their favorite Taylor Swift era. There are ten eras total: Taylor Swift (Self-Titled), Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989, Reputation, Lover, Folklore, Evermore, and Midnights. Each era has its own vibe, color aesthetic, and specific pieces Taylor wore during those periods. For example, Reputation is an absolute classic, with snake print, black leather, and tons of sass. Or maybe the Red era? I mean, that one IS my favorite Taylor Swift album. Come as a sad autumn girl with a red scarf, black high-waisted shorts and oxfords— that's definitely a vibe.

Be sure to wear plenty of sequins, shiny fabrics, and two-piece outfits for a true 1989 era look from Taylor Swift! Add on the quintessential white rayon-type sunglasses to look like a true 1989 fan.

I think it's such a unique outfit to wear to the Era's tour, because it's not exactly a "era" look, but something SO iconic from that era! Pink, lots of pink. Actually, all pink. Just kidding! I put together some outfit ideas that are inspired by some of her performance looks and music video outfits from the Lover era.

The Taylor Swift Lover vibe: Lots of pink, multicolor, fringe, pearls, iridescence, hearts, and sweetness all around.

Grab a hot pink jacket and pearl sunglasses to look like Taylor from "You Need to Calm Down"! Choosing to wear a pastel sky print is such a Lover look, similar to her album cover!

Makeup for your Lover eras tour outfit

If you're wanting to dress up as Taylor's Lover era, it's a sweet detail to do the heart shape makeup over her eye like she does on her album cover! In order to do that, you'll need two main items: liquid latex and skin-safe pink glitter. You can find them here:

I've used the liquid latex above before and it works really well. All you'll need to do is outline the heart around your eye with the liquid latex, wait for it to get tacky, and then apply the pink glitter!

Folklore Era

If you aren't the sparkly-dress Taylor Swift fan, and want to be a sad cottage-core girl, here is your chance! This album screams alone-in-the-woods-and-in-the-feels.

Tap into the cottage-core look and opt for some comfy sweaters, cardigans, and ditsy floral prints. I've grabbed a few items that look similar to the outfits she wore on some of her photoshoots from this era.

Evermore Era

Am I crazy to say that Evermore is one of my favorite TSwift albums? It's definitely the most forgotten one, but WOW does it have some bops, both sad and lovely.

This era was so short-lived, but it gave us some beautiful looks! An easy go-to would be the brown/orange plaid jacket from Evermore. (I've linked on similar) Also, the Willow music video is a huge inspiration for these, and other Swifties will know exactly what you're going for!

Midnights Era

Midnights only came out a few weeks ago while I'm writing this, so I'm still reeling from this album release! I know from the second I hear "Anti-Hero" that it would be an instant classic.

When it comes to the looks from Midnights era, they span from glitzy blue midnight dresses and plenty of sparkles, mixed with vintage looks that evoke a sense of 70s retro. Combining these all together will be the ultimate Midnights tour outfit!

The Taylor Swift Midnights vibe: Honestly, Taylor's Midnights aesthetic is all over the place, but can be boiled down to: 70s vintage, starry night, retro, oranges, blues, lavender, clocks, and anything, and I mean anything that is bejeweled.

Inspired by her 70's glam looks in much of the material for the release of her album midnights, you can don some burnt orange and corduroy and fit in well! The top and fur jacket look similar to the starry dress Taylor wore out when she was promoting "Midnights". For a more casual "Midnights" look, you can wear this sheer celestial top as well. If you want to come to the concert the MOST prepared, you can dress like the current Era: the Eras era! Pretty meta, right? Here are some of the outfits that Taylor's been wearing on her tour that you can recreate in your concert outfit:

Stage outfit 1— Midnights era Lavender Haze jacket

Taylor wears a pink/lavender sparkly dress with a fun faux-fur lavender coat. You can find a super sparkly dress and add a lavender faux fur coat, and look just like Taylor!

Stage outfit 2— Evermore era pink dress

Taylor's whimsical pink dress during her Evermore era is GORGEOUS. Play up your own ethereal vibe and wear a similar dress to the Eras tour!

Stage outfit 3— Reputation era jumpsuit

Taylor wears this awesome one-legged jumpsuit with red snakes all over it. You can buy a black sparkly jumpsuit and attach red snake appliqués to create a look similar to it.

Stage outfit 4— Sparkly RED era jacket

The RED era (my favorite!) has Taylor donning a long red sparkle trench coat. You can look similar to this in either this red velvet long trench I've found, or a men's sparkly suit jacket!

Stage outfit 5— "A LOT Going On At The Moment" shirt

She's reinvented her own RED era look with a shirt that instead of saying "Not a lot going on at the moment" it says "A LOT going on at the moment"! I've found a shirt that says exactly that new phrase on Amazon. Taylor also pairs it with a pair of sparkly black bottoms and a black hat.

Stage outfit 6— 1989 era green two piece

A very Taylor typical outfit, more sparkles! And this time we're working with fun and bright green. She has a sparkle fringed two piece set on stage.

Whether you duked it out with Ticketmaster for tickets or are just going as a very lucky plus-one, you need an outfit that matches the vibe.

If you’re anything like team Marie Claire, you’ve been waiting for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour from the minute that it was announced. And whether you duked it out with Ticketmaster for tickets or are just going as a very lucky plus-one, you need an outfit that matches the vibe. Or, should I say, matches the eras of Swift’s music. 

As a fan who got to attend the show in Boston recently, I was amazed at the wide array of looks at my show. Fans were decked out in Reputation -era snake print, glitter-encrusted face paint inspired by Swift's Lovers album cover, and plenty of DIY’d T-shirts from her Speak Now days. The bottom line? The looks varied widely, proving that you can truly go in any direction when picking your outfit for the Eras tour.

I love getting dressed up for concerts, but I also want to make sure that I can wear my new pieces again and again. It was a question I asked myself over and over while shopping for my own Eras Tour ensemble: Is the look good for me for right now, or good for me forever? In the end, I opted for a bedazzled mesh dress that I could also wear again on a night out over jeans or a slip dress . For the show, I opted to style it over a bodysuit for added coverage. 

If you’re heading to the show this summer, there are a few key things to keep in mind, no matter what you wear. The show is long—five hours from the beginning of the opening act to the end of Swift’s set!—so you’ll want to wear comfortable clothing. Plus, if you’re the kind of fan who spends the majority of the concert jumping and dancing like you’re alone in your bedroom, you’ll want to wear something that you don’t have to worry about adjusting. Comfortable footwear is a must, so make sure that your new shoes don’t require breaking in before you go. Finally, the temperature tends to drop at night—especially if you’re at one of Swift’s rainier shows—so packing waterproof layers in your stadium-approved clear bag is key. (I wish I had packed a sweater.)

Ahead, I rounded up a selection of pieces for you to wear to the Eras Tour, broken down by Era. I’ve tried to think of everything: the shoes I’ve selected are known for being comfortable from the first wear. The dresses are comfortable to both sit and move around in. The jackets add warmth when you need them. Plus, many of the pieces below fall in line with some of summer 2023's biggest fashion trends . 

Taylor Swift's Debut Album Era

If you’re dying for a debut self-titled album Secret Song at your show, wear something that harkens back to Swift’s first-ever era. This time in her career was defined by pastel blue and green shades, her iconic curling-iron curls, and her country twang. Consider cowboy boots and sweet tulle skirts. 

Taylor Swift's 'Fearless' Era

Prefer gold to silver? The Fearless era is for you. This album had it all: Fireworks! A sparkly gold guitar! A gold fringed dress! More was more. To make it work, incorporate gold into your look via a pair of trendy sneakers , a going-out top in the hue, or by wearing a pair of viral gold jeans.     

Taylor Swift's 'Speak Now' Era

Speak Now was defined by one color and one color only: A rich purple. It's the color Swift is wearing on the cover of the album, and it's the shade that has stayed attached to the record ever since. Sweet midi dresses and shoes that come in the same shade are go-tos for this era. 

Taylor Swift's 'Red' Era

Red makes for an easy outfit because it only requires that you wear one color—red. Swift also went slightly preppy while on tour for the album, opting for a classic Breton striped shirt and red high-waisted denim . No matter which outfit vibe you choose, don’t forget your heart-shaped sunglasses. 

Taylor Swift's '1989' Era

1989 is one of the more unique albums in Swift’s discography regarding her looks. While she repped matching sets on tour for the album, she's opted for orange ensembles while on the current Eras Tour.

My personal favorite era as someone who loves to wear all-black, Reputation- inspired outfits are perfect for those who prefer a little drama. From the actual sheer mesh dress I wore to my own concert to a statement-making choker necklace priced at under $50, this era is all about going all-out. 

Taylor Swift's 'Lover' Era

If you love playing with color, consider a Lover- era ensemble for your concert. The key colors for this era were bright Barbiecore pink and rich blue, but pastel shades like baby pink and lavender —a trending color for 2023—were also popular. Go all-out with a heart-shaped stencil around your eye, or heart-shaped earrings. 

Taylor Swift's 'Folklore' Era

Folklore was a departure from the previous maximalist Lover era. The aesthetic for the album was a combination of woodland fairy and cottagecore. On-stage, this translates to flowing summer dresses in muted shades like olive green. IRL, pair lacy layers with chunky cardigans and sweet Mary Jane shoes.

Taylor Swift's 'Evermore' Era

Cozy-core fans, the Evermore era is for you. Taylor’s second pandemic album was full of woodland references but, unlike its predecessor, the vibe this time around was very much fall-inspired. Flannel dresses, comfy Birkenstock sandals, and other comfy pieces reign supreme. Shades to highlight include marigold yellow and burnt red.

Good thing silver everything is one of 2023’s biggest trends—Taylor is obsessed with the shade for her Midnights era. What 200 Swifties Wore to an Eras Show

Sometimes, a place that draws a specific kind of crowd — from a sample sale to an office lunch spot — can yield a wealth of shopping intel. What are these like-minded people all into right now? What sneakers are they wearing? What is that pants brand? For the inaugural edition of People Watching, we posted up at Penn Station ahead of Taylor Swift’s first Eras tour show at MetLife Stadium.

Wherever Taylor Swift’s Eras tour goes, a flurry of sequins follows. But what color sequins? And for which era? And what about all the cowboy boots? The tour made a three-night stop in town during Memorial Day weekend, so on Friday, May 26, I headed to Penn Station, hoping to glean some insight from the crush of concertgoers commuting to MetLife Stadium via NJ Transit. The show’s official start time was 6:30 p.m., so I arrived at the atrium at 4 and lingered among Swifties excitedly checking their phones and outfits, chatting with many of them about their knee-high cowboy boots, Shein crop tops, and the Advil and hair ties stuffed into their clear stadium bags. Here’s what I learned.

The unofficial Eras tour uniform is, obviously, a fun dress + cowboy boots

The combination leaves lots of room for interpretation, depending on which era they wanted to rep. Concertgoers went Fearless glam in fringed flapper dresses; Reputation edgy in tight leather; Lover romantic in puffy organza; and Folklore cottagecore in corseted Renaissance looks. This dreamy Selkie number I saw someone wearing was definitely a nod to Lover .

Final sequins + sparkles count: 67

From sequined dresses to shimmery eye shadow, pretty much every Swiftie was sporting some sort of sparkle. I counted nearly 70 people wearing rhinestones, sequins, or glitter, and I probably missed a lot more. “My friend who went to the Atlanta concert told me she felt left out because she didn’t have sparkles on, so she told me to make sure my outfit had them,” said one fan. These emerald sequined shorts worn by another were a reference to Swift’s serpentine Reputation era.

Final rainbow count: 11

Most memorable was this rainbow-fringe jacket that can pull double duty for Pride.

I saw several people wearing this tall white pair.

Though fans with floor tickets were wearing sneakers

Among those planning to fight their way to the front pit, white sneakers overwhelmingly won out. “Nah, nah to the cowboy boots,” said one fan. “We’re about to go into battle. Sneakers only.” I noticed both Nike AF1s and Vejas in the crowd.

Because the Eras Tour promises to span her entire music catalog, fans have almost unlimited options for how to style themselves in celebration of the occasion.

They posted a TikTok video in which they wear outfits reminiscent of eras past and present as “POV you’re Taylor Swift looking out into the crowd at the Eras Tour” is superimposed over the footage. The caption reads, “Cannot wait for the Swiftie chaos at the Eras Tour.”

Many fans appear to be designing their own apparel that represents all of Swift’s eras, including on denim jackets. Here are some other unique ways people have combined various themes.

“Bejeweled” meets “Lover”: Foreverandfashion shared a “‘Bejeweled’ meets ‘Lover’” look for one of the Houston concerts on Tumblr. It comprises rhinestones, holographic shorts, a tie dye rainbow fringe jacket similar to one Swift wore during an iHeartRadio Wango Tango performance in 2019 and bedazzled heeled boots.

DIY Eras cape: @sunflowerrswift is traveling from Sydney, Australia, to attend both Arizona shows and hand-painted a cape with 10 different sections, with each representing the imagery from an album.

DIY Eras jeweled bustier: Sarah, aka @spookybaseball on TikTok, has been sharing progress on a custom-made bustier top that is striped with hand-glued jewels grouped into colors that represent each album.

"Folklore," "Reputation," "Red" and "1989" patchwork outfit: @HollyMar13 shared a DIY outfit for the first show of The Eras Tour that incorporates at least four eras on Twitter and TikTok . The patchwork project, which appears to be split down the middle, includes half of a cardigan and the "rep" velvet long-sleeve bodysuit (from the "Look What You Made Me Do" music video) on top, split black and white hot pants on the bottom (the black is reminiscent of the Red Tour and the white portion is similar to a 1989 Tour look), thigh-high boots and a sparkly Red Tour ringmaster cape. Swift herself seemed to cosign the outfit by liking it on TikTok.

DIY stars: @Skye_Caylen0614 tweeted photos of a DIY dress made out of more than 550 paper stars that are shipped with merchandise purchased from Swift’s official online store. Coincidentally, it is also reminiscent of the star-embellished blue Moschino romper that Swift wore to a Video Music Awards afterparty in August 2022; the style looks similar to the fringe mini dresses that Swift has worn on stage during various tours, too.

“Cardigan” and “Willow”: Sisters Elaine ( @replover4eva ) and Kelly ( @xmastreefarm13 ) revealed three different complementary looks for their State Farm Stadium shows, including one that pays homage to “Folklore” and “Evermore.” Their outfits incorporate Swift’s “Folklore” merchandise cardigan with an ivory dress as well as a green velvet cape paired with a medieval-inspired dress, which look like what she wore in her “Cardigan” and “Willow” music videos, respectively.

“Cruel Summer”: @longggglive has a head-to-toe blue group outfit complete with blue heart sunglasses, bodysuits and tutus planned for the State Farm Stadium shows, according to a Twitter post . This is in homage to “Cruel Summer,” in which Swift sings, “it's new, the shape of your body / It's blue, the feeling I've got.”

The house from the “Lover” music video: In an impressive feat, Madi — aka @bettysporchlght — created the three-story house in the “Lover” music video that depicts each album as a different room. The accessory, which is made out of foam, is attached with straps and covers Madi’s entire torso.

‘Reputation’ era outfits

Swifties who are nostalgic for her last tour are ready to don dark colors, snake motifs and bodysuits once again in honor of the 2017 “Reputation” album.

“Reputation” meets “Lover”: @danibeedabbles is combining “Reputation” and “Lover” — “my favorite two albums” — to put together an outfit that incorporates the snake motif and rainbow tie dye. It comprises a snake-print mesh bolero jacket and holographic colorful snakeskin-print bodysuit.

Taylor Swift’s Debut era was largely casual, with her often seen sporting a short sundress and cowboy boots both on stage and off.

The green off shoulder maxi dress is a nod to Taylor’s dress in the “Teardrops On My Guitar” music video , where the blue tulle mini dress resembles the corset and tutu she wears in the “Our Song” music video .

The black halter dress references Taylor’s first appearance at the American Music Awards in 2007, where she wore a similar (but bejeweled) dress with tall black cowboy boots.

Throughout the Speak Now tour, she wore a purple A-line halter dress along with gold and black fringe dresses. During the Eras Tour, Taylor sings “Enchanted” in a layered purple ballgown.

Outfits resembling school uniforms were also a strong aesthetic during this era, not only in the “The Story of Us” music video , but also in Taylor’s personal style. She was regularly photographed wearing pleated skirts, knee high socks and button downs.

If you were on Tumblr between 2012-2014, you’re probably intimately familiar with the Red era aesthetic. Probably the easiest to dress for, it’s mostly made up of black and white outfits with red accents– particularly red lipstick.

Also prominent during this era were black fedoras, red heart sunglasses and high waisted shorts. The gold sequin shirt and red shorts combo is inspired by Taylor’s Jingle Ball performance at Madison Square Garden in 2012.

1989 Era Outfits

We got a lot more color back during Taylor’s 1989 era. During her 1989 Tour, she wore a multi-colored sequin jacket over a black bustier with various metallic skater skirts every night.

The “Shake It Off” music video provides a ton of outfit inspo, but my personal fave is the cheerleader costume, which is super easy to recreate.

One of Taylor’s most popular red carpet outfits is from this era, when she paired an orange bandeau top with a flowy fuchsia skirt at the 2016 Grammys– it was simple, but made a statement!

Reputation Era Outfits

Despite the departure from what we had been used to seeing her in, Taylor still worked in some of her signature style choices like sequins, rhinestones, fringe, and lace… just in black.

During her 2019 Wango Tango performance , she sported tie dye shorts with a yellow tee. At the 2019 VMAs , she paired a boldly patterned blazer with a pink sequin bustier and thigh high boots. And of course, there’s the “You Need to Calm Down” music video , which she spends mostly in a pastel pink two-piece under a fluffy fuchsia coat with pearl accessories.

Folklore Era Outfits

Despite being released in the summer, the Folklore era gave us sad girl autumn vibes in both music and style.

This would be a great era to choose if you’re attending The Eras Tour early or late into its run, when the weather may still be chilly from winter or cooling down after summer.

Evermore Era Outfits

Taylor’s Folklore and Evermore eras have a lot of crossover in themes and visuals, with the “sister albums” released just 5 months apart.

One distinct look from the Evermore album cover is Taylor’s long orange and black plaid peacoat and single french braid in her hair.

The “Willow” music video provides two more Evermore outfits to recreate: a lace maxi dress paired with a pearl headband, and the storybook-inspired green cape ensemble.

Midnights Era Outfits

Because Midnights represents so many different points in Taylor’s life, there isn’t one single aesthetic to hone in on. For this era, I’m pulling inspo from music videos as well as her Eras Tour costumes.

In the “Bejeweled” music video , Taylor wears a black corset and shorts bejeweled in colorful stones. In the music video for “Anti-Hero,” one version of Taylor wears a striped one-piece with high waisted sequin shorts.

During the Midnights set at The Eras Tour, we see a lot of sequin dresses. During “Lavender Haze,” she sports a fluffy purple jacket with either a purple or pink sequin dress underneath. Her “Vigilante Shit” outfit may be the most iconic– a sparkly navy blue dress with tassels.

For those that know Taylor Swift fans “All Too Well,” you know that Eras Tour ticket holders will have “Enchanted” and “Bejeweled” outfits for the upcoming shows.

The Eras Tour began on March 17, in Glendale, Arizona. After that, Swifties have been found all over the nation, with shows in Nevada, Texas, Nashville, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Seattle, California and more, culminating in an Inglewood, CA show on August 9.

Taylor Swift’s famous for marking each of her musical eras with distinct shifts in her personal style — and in the months preceding Friday’s release of her new album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” the superstar leaned hard into her scholastic side, sartorially speaking.

“There’s definitely a ‘literary academia’ style that’s going on,” Taylor Swift Style blogger Sarah Chapelle told Page Six Style of the Grammy winner’s “TTPD”-era attire. (Chapelle’s book about the singer’s style evolution,  “Taylor Swift Style: Fashion Through the Eras,”  is out in October.)

“Taylor, I feel, is somebody who’s a little bit of a history nerd.”

As such, she’s been paying subtle tributes to the tortured poets before her — like Sylvia Plath, Elizabeth Barrett Browning and her own distant relative, Emily Dickinson — with pleated skirts, pops of plaid, chunky loafers, corsets and dramatic white dresses, occasionally accented with a gold locket or antique timepiece.

The Real Reason Taylor Swift Dresses Like That

A close read on a decade of outfits..

Considering the meta nature of Taylor Swift’ s performances — her autobiographical lyrics and her intimate connection with audiences — it’s unsurprising that her fashion choices betray self-consciousness. One senses that she isn’t entirely comfortable with high fashion, and maybe that’s something she shares with her young fans and why they instinctively relate to her. Swift is 34 and one of the most successful musical artists in history , with an empire estimated at over $1 billion . And much of that success is due to the image she projects — of a woman still coming of age, still discovering herself. Any style that’s too sophisticated or eccentric would spoil the illusion, and that goes for her red-carpet and casual attire as well as her stage clothes.

For the Eras tour, which had 16 costumes per show, Swift did have some looks by Versace, Oscar de la Renta, and Roberto Cavalli. But these are not the most exciting designer names. Besides, the Cavalli and Versace styles — a beaded miniskirt and cropped top or a bejeweled bodysuit, all worn with glitter boots — conformed to Swift’s favorite stage aesthetic of a drum majorette. She dressed like a marching-band leader, in a gold-braided white jacket and top hat, for her 2009 global Fearless tour. To me, so many of her costumes are reminiscent of the corny saloon-gal styles that another American sweetheart, Debbie Reynolds, wore in westerns, as well as the spangled costumes that the great Bob Mackie designed for TV variety shows in the 1960s and ’70s. There’s a wonderful hoofer charm, a showgirl moxie, about these Swift looks that resonate with audiences. During Eras, Swift also wore ethereal princess gowns — another key style for the singer — like a dreamy Elie Saab number in blush tulle and a lavender tiered Nicole + Felicia dress, both worn for the Speak Now section.

By contrast, other pop divas have harnessed high fashion to their power. Look at Madonna’s “Blond Ambition” phase, in 1990, and her use of Jean Paul Gaultier’s shocking designs. Beyoncé, for her Renaissance tour, completely bent fashion to her will, taking the work of some of the most daring designers — Marc Jacobs, Rick Owens, and Jonathan Anderson of Loewe, to name three — and pushing their looks for her further into fantasy.

That’s not Swift’s jam or, rather, her brand. She sees herself as a storyteller, in the tradition of Joni Mitchell. She has sung about love, breakups, revenge, family, and self-loathing. These are universal themes and especially relevant to girls and young women. Swift is famous for planting what she calls “ Easter eggs” — hidden clues — in her lyrics. Describing the strategy as a way to “incentivize” fans to read her lyrics, she has said, “I think the best messages are cryptic ones.” This also applies to her style. Indeed, with Swift — more than most pop stars — every choice seems to relate to her work or the Swift brand image. One obvious, feel-good connection point with her audience — which includes moms who accompany their daughters to concerts — is nostalgia and a feeling of pageantry. Some of her frothy gowns evoke not only high-school prom and images of old-style debutante parties but also the glamour of Edith Head’s movie costumes in the 1950s. Swift has said that watching Hitchcock’s Rear Window — gowns by Head — and reading the romantic novel Rebecca during lockdown influenced her albums Folklore and Evermore . In a cynical, fast-moving world, that kind of traditional form can seem quite attractive.

It’s also worth noting that Swift is hyperaware of the dangers of celebrity. “I see a lot of celebrities build up these emotional walls around themselves where they let no one in,” she said in 2014, “and that’s what makes them feel very lonely at the top.” Staying emotionally open in her lyrics and accessible in her fashion is surely a way she avoids creating walls. Her fans must sense that. But it can lead to some self-conscious looks on the red carpet and in her street attire. This was true of the white custom-made Schiaparelli gown with a floor-sweeping hem and train that she wore to this year’s Grammys , which was criticized across social media. On Instagram, Sarah Chapelle (@taylorswiftstyled), who is publishing a book this fall about Swift’s style, likened the gown’s draping to “tangled bedsheets” and said that considering it was the work of Daniel Roseberry, it was “almost a greater disappointment.” Chapelle, who has spent years tracking and decoding every detail of Swift’s outfits, assumed that the gown and its black accessories were Easter eggs. This time, the hint was to her forthcoming album The Tortured Poets Department, which has a black-and-white cover of a woman in black underwear lying in white sheets. Chapelle hunted down the make of the undies — a sheer Saint Laurent top and The Row’s briefs — and noted that Swift’s wearing so much of late from those brands was no coincidence. “Is there ever one with Taylor, really?” wrote Chapelle. She felt that the beautiful elements of the Schiaparelli gown were “sacrificed to the early evocation of a scholarly-sounding album.”

In other words, Swift laid a bad egg.

There is also a fair amount of calculation in the singer’s off-duty clothes — more than a non-Swifty might suppose, given how basic much of her street style is. Her favorite looks, and maybe her best, are easy slip dresses, or a frilly white shirt with denim cutoffs and boots, or a schoolgirl plaid skirt with a plain sweater and chunky loafers — what one Swiftologist calls “liberal arts student, Shoreditch dweller.” Though Swift is known for wearing relatively inexpensive brands like Rails, House of CB (for a $119 black bustier top she wore earlier this year with a $1,400 Miu Miu mini), Madewell and Reformation, she also wears a lot of high-end labels, including Louis Vuitton, Gucci, The Row, Stella McCartney, and Area. Lots of celebrities play with a similar high-low mix, but with Swift, the effect generally comes off as decidedly junior, as though she’s consciously trying not to get above her fans’ tastes or means.

As a Kansas City Chiefs fan, I watched Swift’s appearances during the NFL season to cheer on her boyfriend , Travis Kelce . Still, I found nothing special about her red sweaters and bombers, with layers of gold jewelry, other than a tie-in to K.C.’s team color. But Chapelle found the Easter eggs. The red crewneck, from Gigi Hadid’s Guest in Residence brand , that Swift wore to the Chiefs’ title match with the Ravens was a “sentimental” nod to a friend. In Chapelle’s view, its plainness showed that Swift was careful “to strike a more supportive spectator (not starring) role” at such a big game. Chapelle clocked her diamond tennis bracelet with the romantic letters “TNT” and then linked the style to the friendship bracelets her fans wear, a fad that started because of a line in a song she wrote.

The fact that Swift makes all these gestures, with or without the help of a stylist (she has long worked with Joseph Cassell), is a great way to keep her fans engaged. And apparently, it’s also good for business. But it seems exhausting and limiting for a woman in her mid-30s to dress according to a lyric or a girlish sentiment. You can understand why many people on fan sites wish she’d take more risks with her street style. They’re probably bored with the “liberal arts student” look. It’s also a little disingenuous, given her grown-up status. I admire the fact that she doesn’t seem interested in playing the high-fashion game — that is, turning up at the shows or appearing in a campaign or being a brand ambassador. She has her own immense platform, which she’s used for political and social causes.

But she could afford to go further in her style. Instead of a schoolgirl skirt or a baggy pair of jeans, she’d look amazing in, say, a sleek Dior pencil suit, made to measure — why not? — and without all the trinket jewelry, however expensive. It’s worth remembering that Taylor Swift has always been older and wiser than her years. The girl can’t be discovering herself forever.

Taylor Swift shows no mercy

The pop superstar’s overdone new double album, “the tortured poets department: the anthology,” feels relentless.

Who’s torturing who here? Sorry, sorry. That isn’t the freshest zinger to zing in the direction of this sprawling new Taylor Swift double album , but please know that after funneling 19 of its 31 tracks through my headphones on Friday morning, my phone died, as if by its own volition. Same for any hope I had that the overall mood might improve in the third act of this two-hour hostage situation, a despair made manifest once I located my charger and heard the lyric, “My friends used to play a game where we would pick a decade we wished we could live in … I’d say the 1830s, but without all the racists.”

As a 21st-century pop omnipresence, Swift remains mercilessly prolific and unwilling to edit for length, which makes this extended version of her new album, “The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology,” feel miserable and bottomless. The big surprise is how much of that misery is intentional. In concussive contrast to the good times she’s been having in the public eye — highest grossing concert tour in the history of the species; highest grossing concert film to match; on-field kisses with her boyfriend after he won the Super Bowl — Swift’s new ballads are sour theater, fixated on memories of being wronged and stranded, sodden with lyrics that feel clunky, convoluted, samey, purple and hacky. There are song titles that burn hot like distress flares (“I Hate it Here”), and lines that feel waxy with Freudian slippage (“I know I’m just repeating myself”), and a profusion of soft-edged, slow-moving melodies — produced by Swift, Jack Antonoff, Aaron Dessner and Patrik Berger — that do her lyrics few favors. As she unloads every last item from her grievance vault, it’s hard for sentient listeners to not want to reciprocate.

That said, is this the album that finally grants us societal permission to say that Swift is not a great lyricist? She can be, sometimes, but greatness isn’t a part-time job, and the thinning thinness of her words can make big emotions feel hollow. Plus, the objects of affection that populate these midtempo reminiscences all sound like real creeps. “At dinner, you take my ring off my middle finger and put it on the one people put wedding rings on,” sings the most celebrated songwriter of her generation on her album’s title track , “and that’s the closest I’ve come to my heart exploding.” Oh man. In “ The Manuscript ,” she sings in the third person, describing a flame who once “said that if the sex was half as good as the conversation was, soon they’d be pushing strollers.” During “ I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can) ,” she gloms onto some imaginary bad boy, describing how “his hand, so calloused from his pistol, softly traces hearts on my face” — which must be pretty close to what you get when you ask ChatGPT to compose a Lana Del Rey hook. Attempting to further signal her maturity, Swift deploys profanity with awkward relentlessness across too many of these songs, sounding like a child test-driving her illicit new vocabulary in hopes of convincing the greater populace that she is, in fact, 34 years old.

Her music has no problem walking up to the precipice of self-examination — Hmm, why did I want to live in the slavery era if I’m not all that into the slavery part? Hey, why didn’t I barf when that dude played his cringey ring game? — but Swift almost always steps back into the shallow end, dulling her ideas with reflexive clichés. Lightning appears in bottles. Wrinkles appear in time. Ships are abandoned or gone down with. Plans are best laid. Hearts are cold, cold. Scripts get flipped. Poisons get picked. To zest things up, she likes tweaking certain words in rote figures of speech, or grafting them onto more melodramatic phrases until a completed line begins to resemble cathartic teenager poetry. “They say what doesn’t kill you makes you aware, ” she sings on “ Cassandra ,” a piano ballad that vaguely surges in the direction of Tori Amos. (Stay that course, please.) “Old habits die screaming ,” she sings while seething tidily during “ The Black Dog .” On “ Loml ,” she feels “better safe than starry-eyed ,” but eventually grieves “our field of dreams engulfed in fire. ” On “ How Did It End ,” she flips the old playground matrimony ditty so that she’s “sitting in a tree, D-Y-I-N-G. ”

The Style section

Enough. These are highly embarrassing combinations of words made to serve an even more embarrassing narrative: the childish idea that the most famous singer alive should be pitied for living alone atop her mountaintop of money, feeling sad and aggrieved. We should all try our hardest to forget the manipulative underdog posture that Swift refuses to forfeit with each passing album, especially when the genuine tragedy-like feeling to be gleaned from all of these songs — and from nearly every Swift song that came before, too — is that Swift has traded her adulthood for superstardom.

She hasn’t been an anonymous human being since she was 17, and in terms of her art, many of her horizons seem to have stopped right there. It helps to explain why at least three songs on this double album take place on playgrounds; and why another one is set at a high school party (where the sexiest lyric of her career sounds like additional AI-generated Lana worship: “You know how to ball, I know Aristotle … Touch me while your bros play Grand Theft Auto”). It’s probably why her songs rely so heavily on the make-believe concepts of destiny, and prophecy, and fate. She has not lived a normal life. She doesn’t make normal choices. Everything in her creative and professional world happens at epic heights that are difficult to comprehend and from which there is no coming down. Where are the songs about the profound sadness in all that?

Also, who cares what I want? You are a middle-aged man , you’re saying, This music is not for you . The first part is true. But I would argue that pop music is for everyone. You’re here, I’m here, I’m writing, you’re reading, we’re in this listening life together, and it’s probably just fine to wish that the most widely circulated music of our lifetimes might be more imaginative and less self-obsessed. We’re long overdue for a Swift album that feels even a little bit curious about the world she rules.

Taylor Swift Seemingly Has A Scathing Review Of Matty Healy Relationship On 'The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived'

Is the song 'The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived' about the 1975 frontman?

The 11 th studio album from the star, which was released on April 19, features one song titled 'The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived', which is believed to allude to Healy's height given it has been the subject of debate for some time. For example, in 2018, the star told The Fader : ' Everyone in [the 1975] is 6’4" and I’m 5’10", so everyone thinks that I’m 5’5”.' In 2022, he also told a fan that he was 'sick to f*cking death' of this injustice, given that he is, in fact, 'a big boy'.

While we don't know for sure that Swift's song is about Healy, one of the biggest suggestions that it is is the song's first verse, which features the line ' Gazing at me, starry-eyed / In your Jehovah’s Witness suit.' Healy’s iconic 1975 outfit is, as The New Yorker described it, a 'close-cut suit and a tie ', which is an ensemble often worn by Jehovah’s Witnesses who look to ' reflect the values that we live by ' and ' show respect for our God '. While it's important to note that Healy is not a Jehovah's Witness, the comparison between his suit choice is telling.

In the song Swift also compares the unnamed man to a ‘tattooed golden retriever’ in the song 'The Tortured Poet's Department' adding that the individual is ‘in self sabotage mode / Throwing spikes down on the road’ and questions whether ‘trusting my sparkling summer was the goal’.

The summer reference is crucial here as Swift and Healy began dating last summer following the Grammy Award winner’s split from British actor Joe Alwyn, who she dated for six years. Swift and Healy were regularly seen attending each other’s concerts, going to dinners together, heading to a Brits Awards after party, kissing, and had a mutual friend and producer in Jack Antonoff.

However, the romance was short lived and by June the pair had called it quits.

While it’s not unusual for Swift to pull from her previous relationships as inspiration for her music (see Joe Jonas, Harry Styles, Calvin Harris and Tom Hiddleston for reference), but it seems her time with Healy has provided a powerful memory of creativity for the star. Swift is currently in a relationship with Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce.

In the track 'The Tortured Poet's Department', Swift dubs the individual ‘not Dylan Thomas’, adding: ‘Sometimes I wonder if you’re going to screw this up with me / But you told Lucy you would kill yourself if I ever leave.

‘And I had said that to Jack about you so I felt seen / Everyone we know understands why it’s meant to be / Because we’re crazy.

‘You said if we had been closer in age maybe it would have been fine / And that made me want to die / The idea you had of me, who was she? / A never-needy, ever-lovely jewel whose shine reflects on you.’

In 'The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived', Swift also notes: ‘I would have died for your sins / Instead I just died inside / And you deserve prison / But you won’t get time / You’ll slide into inboxes / And slip through the bars.’

Of course, Swift isn’t the only one to look back at their time together with less than rose-tinted glasses.

In an interview with Q in 2016, Healy (who was first linked to Swift in 2015), reportedly described the prospect of dating the singer-songwriter as a ‘de-masculinating, emasculating thing’.

‘She wasn’t a big impact on my life. It’s just interesting to me how interested the world is about Taylor Swift,’ he said, later adding: ‘if I had gone out with Taylor Swift I would’ve been, ‘F**king hell! I am NOT being Taylor Swift’s boyfriend.’ You know, ‘F**K. THAT’.

The singer later reportedly, per Yahoo , clarified his comments on X , writing: ‘Now I may admit to being an idiot on occasion, but I am not a misogynist. This suggestion makes me really sad.

‘I was for a very short time immersed in a celebrity world that I found confusing and scary.

‘At that time, I had fears of being “somebody’s boyfriend” (remember this is all speculation as we never dated!) before even being recognised for my music or presence as a person in my own right.

‘Now I don’t pride myself on being more intelligent, or worldly, or wise, or progressive, or even regressive than the next man but I DO pride myself on being honest.

‘I was being HONEST about all the thoughts, feelings, and situations that come along when people ASSUME you are dating the most famous woman on the planet.’

He also described her as ‘one of the most gracious, hard working, creatively gifted, and beautiful women’ that he has met, and that he has ‘a lot of respect and admiration for her’.

‘I didn’t even date Taylor, but the media’s incessant and brutal obsession with her has meant that even a guy who DIDN’T DATE HER has been so battered by their never-ending questions that he’s inevitably said something that can be lifted and moulded into something that resembles “shade”. It’s really sad.’

There Are New Reports On Taylor Swift And Travis Kelce's Relationship After Their Appearance At Coachella

A source shared new details about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's relationship — including the couple's surprise appearance at Coachella.

In case you missed it, Taylor and Travis attended Day 2 on Saturday. They watched performances by "Karma" rapper Ice Spice and the Bleachers, the band helmed by her close friend and collaborator Jack Antonoff . The couple was also seen dancing and kissing backstage at points.

"Taylor and Travis were so excited to go to Coachella together," a source told Entertainment Tonight . "They wanted to be there to support their friends and just have fun. They had the best time at the festival and were in their own world even though so many people were around them."

The insider also discussed the pair's relationship, and from the sounds of it, things are going pretty great for them. "They are very in love and in sync in so many aspects of their lives, and it's very sweet to see."

Since getting together last fall , the pair has made it a priority to support each other at events. Taylor has been seen at various Kansas City Chiefs games, while Travis attended several of her Eras Tour stops.

"They are very supportive of each other," a source told People. "They're enjoying solo dates, but have also been hanging out with their friends." In June, Taylor will be back on the road to resume her Eras Tour, but in the meantime, the source said she and Travis have been "all about quality time together."

Coachella is "one of many adventures yet to come for the duo," the ET source added.
