Purchase and Top-Up

Where can i buy metro tickets and cards.

  • The BonoMetro card can be purchased from any of the ticket vending machines located within the various Metro stations.
  • The Consortium Travel Card can be bought at any of the sales points authorised by the Malaga Area Metropolitan Transport Consortium.
  • To acquire the Large Family Travel Card, see the Tickets and Travel Cards section of our website.

Where can I top up my Metro Travel Card?

  • The BonoMetro card can be topped up at the ticket vending machines in the Metro stations.
  • The Consortium Travel Cards (Standard and Large Family) can be topped up at authorised Malaga Area Metropolitan Transport Consortium  sale points , as well as at the aforementioned Metro vending machines.

Discounts when changing to or from Metro trains are only available through the Consortium Travel Card. Reductions are applied as outlined below:

Changing from local or long-distance buses to Metro trains

  • The cost of the initial bus ticket depends on the number of fare zone crossings for which the Consortium Card has been configured: zero crossings – €0.93; one crossing – €1.07; two crossings – €1.43; three crossings €2.36.
  • The cost of the second ticket when transferring to Metro Malaga, again using the Consortium Card, is €0.65.

Changing from the Metro to local or long-distance buses:

  • The cost of the Metro ticket is €0.82.
  • The cost of transferring to a long-distance or local bus depends on the number of fare zone crossings for which the Consortium Card has been configured: zero crossings – €0.76; one crossing – €0.90; two crossings – €1.26; three crossings – €2.19.

Using the Travel Card on the Metro

At the start of the journey, the Travel card must be placed in front of the card reader at one of the turnstiles located in the station of origin. The same procedure is later repeated at the station where the journey ends. Passengers have 90 minutes in which to complete their journey. If this period is exceeded, a second journey will be deemed to have begun, and the corresponding fare will be charged to the Travel Card.

As on long-distance buses, up to 15 passengers may use the same Travel Card, providing no more than 3 minutes elapse between the purchases of the first and last ticket. This condition does not apply to the Large Family Travel Card, which is issued to a named individual and may not be used by anyone else.

Within the Consortium’s metropolitan fare zone system, Metro journeys are deemed to involve no fare crossings, as they do not take the passenger beyond the boundaries of  Zone A . This means that Consortium Cards for use on the Metro may be configured for 0, 1, 2 or 3 crossings, with 0 crossings being the cheapest option for this type of journey. For further information, see the Fares section of our website.

Train Times and Frequency

Metro lines 1 and 2 will have the following timetables:

At Easter and during Malaga’s August Fair, and also when other events leading to increased demand are in progress, special services may be provided. For further information, visit the  MetroMálaga  website.

Transport Tickets

Single ticket.

The best option for occasional travellers, this is purchased in cash on board the bus and its price (special services excepted) depends on the number of zones crossed during the journey. This ticket does not offer a discount on transfers.

This is a wallet card that entitles the holder to an unlimited number of trips, providing the card has sufficient credit. This is ideal for frequent travellers, who benefit from its ease of use and cheaper fares.

This card was introduced by the Malaga Consortium in 2012 to cater for the cumulative discount system applicable to large families.

Travel cards issued by other Andalusian Transport Consortia

As a result of the interoperability project introduced in 2006, travel card users can travel within the areas covered by all of Andalusia’s Transport Consortia using a card issued by any one of them, enjoying all of the discounts and benefits available in the area in which the fare is paid.

To consult the fares applicable when using travel cards issued by other Andalusian Consortia in the Malaga area, click here . To consult the fares applicable when using the Malaga Consortium card in areas of Andalusia served by other Consortia, please visit their own web sites .

It consists of a virtual wallet accessible from the Consorcio Málaga mobile app through which you can make trips on routes in the Metropolitan Area using your smartphone with the Android operating system.

The project is in a beta version, so please consult the following link to obtain all the information on this new system, especially the lines in which it can be used.

the consortium travel card

Hello everyone,

For the Cercanías train, I heard one can simply use a credit card to tap in and tap out. At the same time, to use metro and buses, is the "Transport Consortium Travel Card" the best choice, which I read about here:

https://metromalaga.es/en/tickets-and-fares/

Where would I be able to buy this card upon arrival at Malaga Maria Zambrano train station? This is different from the Bonobus card, is this right?

When taking the bus from Fuengirola to Mijas Pueblo, would that be covered by the same "Transport Consortium Travel Card" or would one have to purchase separate tickets because it is a different bus company?

Thank you in advance for any helpful responses.

For services within Málaga city you need a different card, the EMT one:

The fares are significantly lower with the EMT card but this doesn’t really matter if your journeys are going to be mostly on the CTMAM buses.

Thanks. I think I was paying 79 cents. All seems super cheap in comparison to the poor public transport here in Glasgow!

If using the Malaga EMT buses do you just scan the card without notifying the driver as these buses are local only

Thats what I thought, if the bus only operates in one zone thats all you should be charged

Thanks for confirming it

  3. "Transport Consortium Travel Card"?

We are looking at getting the 3 zone Consortium Travel Card when we arrive in Malaga next week as we will want to travel inland to various places in the area, I understand that you have to tell the driver your destination before scanning so he can put in the correct zone charge for you.
