The Cure Live at Giants Stadium in 1989

It was 30 years ago today: On Aug. 20, 1989, The Cure launched the U.S. leg of the “Prayer” tour behind their phenomenal Disintegration album. Since everyone loves an anniversary, here’s a set of photographs I took on the day, which I’ve previously only shared with a few friends.

The Cure live at Meadowlands (Aug. 20, 1989)

On the day, I drove down with two friends from Connecticut to Giants Stadium, a former sports arena located in East Rutherford, New Jersey, in the Meadowlands, having procured general admission tickets for us all to access the ground level. Marianne drove; I had gotten my license but wasn’t yet comfortable (or allowed?) to drive across state lines or at least roundabout greater New York City.

Streaming onto the football field — general admission territory — we made it to within maybe 50 feet of the stage. It was a sweltering summer day, and staff fired a water hose over us at multiple intervals. Shelleyan Orphan opened, followed by Love and Rockets, followed by the Pixies. I remember the Pixies, who I love, didn’t quite seem to fill the stadium. As if the sound system and setup were optimized for someone else.

As dusk fell, smoke filled the stage to the sound of wind chimes and The Cure’s “Plainsong.” Writing about it even 30 years later gives me chills, as does seeing The Cure perform live this year, via YouTube, at the Sydney Opera House and later at Glastonbury.

Performing at the Meadowlands, they were immense, capturing the “emotional intensity and depth” — to quote Q’s August 2019 feature on Disintegration’s 30th anniversary — that the record had achieved, yet also live. The Cure’s set, including two encores, ran for close to 3 hours (if I remember correctly), never flagging in intensity. The stadium was rapt, in a frenzy, delirious at their presence. The show remains one of the best I’ve ever attended.

Five Imaginary Boys

Thirty years later, I’m struck by how the wonderfully lit stage so often echoed the hues of the group’s album covers, including the screaming red of Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, the group’s seventh album. Most of my photographs feature frontman and singer Robert Smith, who was front and center, with keyboardist Roger O’Donnell a haunted-looking presence directly behind. Capturing bassist Simon Gallup was more difficult, though I have a great photograph of him — more of a silhouette, wearing a big, round hat — that I have yet to relocate. And only grainy photos of guitarist Porl Thompson, and little of drummer Boris Williams, who was largely outside my sight line.

For me, Disintegration represents the group’s apotheosis, for reasons not just of musicality but also the time and place of its debut, in my teenage years, pursuing every bit of Cure music that I could find, mixed with the relative shift into maturity and gravitas — but still, so much fun — that Robert Smith and company managed to achieve on the album.

I still remember the smell of the plastic wrapper on the cassette as I snapped it off and slid the tape into my Hyundai’s car stereo, and the first chimes of Plainsong as I read the accordion-folded liner notes, obeying the order therein:

“THIS MUSIC HAS BEEN MIXED TO BE PLAYED  LOUD  SO TURN IT UP.”

The Rolling Stones kick off new tour sponsored by AARP

Mick Jagger, left, and Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones perform during the first night of...

HOUSTON (AP) — Time marches on and all good things must come to an end. But don’t tell that to The Rolling Stones .

What many believe to be the greatest rock ‘n’ roll band in the world showed no signs of slowing down anytime soon as they kicked off their latest tour Sunday night at Houston’s NRG Stadium.

The Stones have been touring for more than 60 years. Frontman Mick Jagger and lead guitarist Keith Richards are both 80, with guitarist Ronnie Wood not far behind at 76. Their tour is being sponsored in part by AARP.

But during a vibrant two-hour show, the Stones played with the energy of a band that was on tour for the first time.

“It’s great to be back in the Lone Star State,” Jagger told the packed stadium, filled with longtime fans, many wearing faded concert shirts from previous tours.

Jagger often strutted up and down the stage with seemingly boundless energy while Richards and Wood played many familiar guitar riffs beloved by fans. Jagger often led the audience in sing-alongs.

“The energy level is up and it’s always up with them. The age doesn’t show,” Dale Skjerseth, the Stones’ production director, said Friday before the concert.

The Stones have hit the road to support the release of their latest album, “Hackney Diamonds,” the band’s first record of original music since 2005.

Houston was the first stop on the band’s 16-city tour across the U.S. and Canada. Other cities on the tour include New Orleans, Philadelphia and Vancouver, British Columbia. The tour ends on July 17 in Santa Clara, California.

During Sunday’s 18-song concert set list, the Stones played several tracks off the new record, including lead single “Angry.” They also played classics including “Sympathy for the Devil,” “Gimme Shelter,” Honky Tonk Women” and “Start Me Up.”

After playing “Beast of Burden,” Jagger said that concertgoers in Houston had voted to include it on the set list.

“You can’t go wrong with that,” one man in the audience could be heard screaming.

The Stones also played some unexpected choices, including “Rocks Off,” from their 1972 double album “Exile on Main St.” and “Out of Time,” a 1966 song that Jagger said during the concert had not ever been played by the band in the U.S.

With the 2021 death of drummer Charlie Watts , the Stones are now comprised of the core trio of Jagger, Richards and Wood. On Sunday, they were backed by various musicians including two keyboardists, a new drummer, backup singers and a brass section.

While the stage was surrounded by a large collection of video screens projecting images throughout the show, the main focus of the concert was the band and their songs

Before Sunday’s concert, Jagger spent time on Friday touring NASA’s Johnson Space Center in suburban Houston, posting photos on his Instagram account of him with astronauts inside Mission Control.

“I had an amazing trip to the space center,” Jagger said.

When asked if the band might be thinking about retiring, Skjerseth said he doubts that will happen.

“This is not the end. They’re very enthused,” he said.

Concert ticket system is 'broken,' say artists. But some experts say targeting resellers isn't the fix

More than 250 artists signed a letter thursday calling out 'predatory' re-sellers.

the cure concert tour 1988

Social Sharing

The way concert tickets are sold is "broken," according to a new letter signed by more than 250 major recording artists including Billie Eilish, Blue Rodeo and Fall Out Boy.

The letter, signed Thursday, voiced support for the Fans First Act, a bill pending in the U.S. Senate that would prevent speculative ticket sales when a seller does not have a ticket. It also would require "all-in" pricing, outlaw deceptive websites and strengthen enforcement of penalties for bot usage to scoop up tickets.

"We are joining together to say that the current system is broken," the artists said in a letter to congressional sponsors of the legislation.

"Predatory re-sellers and secondary platforms engage in deceptive ticketing practices to inflate ticket prices and deprive fans of the chance to see their favourite artists at a fair price.

"Predatory resellers should not be more profitable than the people dedicating their lives to their art."

Other prominent artists who signed include Cyndi Lauper,  Aimee Mann, Indigo Girls, Lorde, Green Day and Duran Duran.

  • Analysis Quebec wants to stop sky-high prices from ticket resellers. It won't be easy
  • Music fans won't get a break on concert ticket prices in 2024, according to experts

"Buying a ticket to see your favourite artist in concert is like going through a gauntlet for too many Americans," said U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who is a co-sponsor of the bill, in a statement on her website . "This is hurting music fans and it's hurting artists."

It's an issue lawmakers are looking at in Canada , too. Measures such as more transparency, prohibiting bots, and strengthening penalties have already been adopted in some provinces, CBC previously reported . In last week's  federal budget , the Liberal government pledged to work with provinces to crack down on "fraudulent resellers and reseller practices which unfairly drive up prices."

the cure concert tour 1988

Ticket resale prices keep rising. What's Quebec doing to crack down?

But as ticket prices soar , and resale prices soar even higher (tickets for Taylor Swift's Nov. 14 Toronto show go as high as $11,267 a pair on StubHub, for instance), some experts argue that the letter — and the U.S. bill — are unlikely to change much for fans. And they say targeting resellers isn't necessarily the fix.

The perception is often that artists feel they're being exploited or taken advantage of by the ticketing industry, said Shiraz Mawani, an independent ticketing consultant in Toronto. And he says he can empathize with their frustration.

"But at the same time, it's difficult to find a solution that really works. Because, at the end of the day, it's a supply issue," Mawani said.

"There are only so many seats available."

Sales are booming

Live music sales are booming, according to Live Nation, which owns Ticketmaster. Earlier in April, the company said in a filing with regulators that 2023 brought all-time highs in both attendance and ticket sales . This was powered by big stadium tours from artists including Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, Live Nation said.

Economists have predicted that, this year, music fans will continue to see high prices for big-name artists .

One problem with the letter signed by the musicians calling for ticket reform is that it's directed at resellers such as StubHub instead of Ticketmaster and Live Nation, which hold the market share and "considerable control" in the industry, said Timothy Dewhirst, a professor of marketing and consumer studies at the University of Guelph.

"It's become pretty pricey to deal with Ticketmaster for a lot of the leading concerts that are out there," Dewhirst told CBC News.

Some artists have been vocally critical of Ticketmaster, calling out their extra fees and dynamic ticket pricing. Last year, The Cure's Robert Smith convinced Ticketmaster to refund some of what he said were the "unduly high" fees for tickets for the band's U.S. tour.

Some fans had complained that the fees essentially doubled the price of their tickets. In a post on X last year , formerly Twitter, Smith wrote that he was "sickened."

That was a "pretty notable gesture" on Smith's part, Dewhirst said, but it's not one he sees some of the major artists out there, such as Taylor Swift, replicating.

"People are willingly paying the high prices. She probably figures, 'well, people are willingly able to do that, that's the going rate,' so to speak," he said.

Fix the tix.

Venues and artist groups have formed a coalition called Fix the Tix, led by the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA), that is pushing for passage of the Fans First Act, which they say offers the strongest protections for ticket buyers.

Stephen Parker, executive director of NIVA, said that bill is "the most fan- and artist-friendly ticketing legislation that Congress has ever introduced."

"It makes illegal the abusive, predatory behaviour from predatory resale platforms and ticket brokers," he said, and also calls for a national evaluation of the ticket resale market.

  • 'If it's too good to be true, it likely is,' police warn amid reports of Taylor Swift concert ticket scam
  • Online scammers making it a cruel summer for Taylor Swift fans

But going after re-sellers, or more specifically, bad actors in the reseller market, won't fix the ticket price problem, said Mawani, the independent ticketing consultant. And limiting reselling could actually limit the supply of tickets for people who aren't able to buy them during the pre-sale or the moment they became available online, he added.

"This act that they're trying to push through does very little on the Ticketmaster side," he said.

"It could be a step in the right direction in terms of continuing the conversation around tickets and resale... but I don't know if this specific bill is going to be the one that's going to change the world."

Ticketmaster told Reuters it backed bans on speculative sales and deceptive websites, as well as better enforcement of anti-bot legislation.
