The Dakotas Create Culturally-Rich Visitor Tour with Help from the GW International Institute of Tourism Studies

Indigenous people living in the Great Plains, Black Hills, and Badlands have recently developed a new one-of-a-kind Dakotas tour and are excited to be able to welcome visitors and share their history and culture. Destination America, in partnership with the South and North Dakota Tribal Nations, South Dakota Department of Tourism, and the George Washington University International Institute of Tourism Studies (GW IITS), has created and will offer a nine day cultural tour of tribal lands in the Dakotas starting in Spring 2023. This tour, called “National Parks and Native Trails of the Dakotas,” is a fascinating journey through South and North Dakota. Travelers can take the tour from May through August in a 20-30 person coach.

Creating the tour took intense collaboration, time, and testing. The tour is designed to delight visitors in meaningful Indigenous tribal experiences, support local Native American communities and allow tribes to share their culture, history and legacy in their own ways through the powerful incorporation of storytelling.

GW IITS supported the South Dakota Native Tourism Alliance (SDNTA) and North Dakota Native Tourism Alliance (NDNTA) during the tour planning process which included a familiarization (FAM) tour for Destination America, in-person product development workshops, and a test run of Destination America’s multi-day tour.

the dakotas tour 2022

Tour development began back in July 2021 with the FAM tour showcasing tourism sites and attractions in South and North Dakotas that could be included in a tour itinerary. Sites included the Lakota Youth Development Initiative and many points of interest on Pine Ridge, Rosebud and Standing Rock Reservations, as well as the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation. The FAM tour was led by SDNTA and NDNTA members.. GW IITS’ participation during the FAM tour helped identify technical assistance needs for development, pricing and successful operation of the new tour.

GW IITS held in-person product development studio workshops and training sessions in November 2021 for each tribal nation and native organization contributing to the developing tour. Tribal participants were guided in creating engaging itineraries that are profitably priced. At the workshop’s conclusion, all the tribes and organizations were ready to submit their tour packages–itineraries and prices–to Destination America.

The final step of the tour development process was a test tour of the multi-day itinerary. In July 2022, GW IITS and the SD Department of Tourism co-hosted a four-day test evaluating the tribal components of the upcoming tour. Planned stops in national parks and monuments were not included in the test. The twenty test participants were a mix of tour operators, marketers, guides, and SDNTA members who provided practical feedback on touring sites on the Pine Ridge Reservation, Rosebud Reservation, the Lakota Youth Development Camp in Milks Camp, and the Sitting Bull Visitor Center in Standing Rock Nation. Activities included storytelling performances, a traditional native food tasting of dishes made with fresh produce, a Native tea demonstration and touring a living history village, cultural heritage museums and art galleries.

Rated a great success, the test tour gave tour providers valuable practical insights and guidance and allowed tour providers and operators to strengthen their developing relationships.

The National Parks and Native Trails of the Dakotas tour launches to great fanfare in the Spring of 2023. Proud participants GW IITS, SDNTA, NDNTA, Destination America, and participating tribes and national parks are all excited to share the first-of-its-kind tour with curious travelers.

Tour Review: Trafalgar’s National Parks and Native Trails of the Dakotas

History, traditions, and nature are the stars of this north and south dakota based tour..

Allison Tibaldi

The Scoop: What to Know About Trafalgar Tours

  • I joined Trafalgar’s National Parks and Native Trails of the Dakotas tour to learn more about the Tribal Nations of the region.
  • On this nine-day motor coach tour, our group visited reservations, heard personal stories from First Nations communities, and learned about the culture through dance, food, history, and language.
  • This tour doesn’t just focus on Tribal Nations, it also contributes to them. All the proceeds of the Indigenous experiences on this tour go directly to the participating communities.
  • There are also stops at national parks including Badlands and Mount Rushmore.

I’ve long been interested in America’s Indigenous communities but my desire to learn more about the Tribal Nations of the Dakotas ramped up a few year ago, when my teenage son Alec spent a summer volunteering at a children’s camp on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.

His experience left a big impression and sparked a deeper interest to further understand the history and current experience of the Indigenous people that he had built personal relationships with.

U.S. TOURS: 10 Best U.S. Tours This Year and Next

When I had the chance to join Trafalgar’s National Parks and Native Trails of the Dakotas guided tour, I jumped at the opportunity.

On this 9-day group motor coach tour, I learned how First Nations communities have connected to the land for generations and how they continue to honor this connection. Visits to Pine Ridge, Rosebud, and Standing Rock reservations offered a human perspective, introducing me to members of these Tribal Nations, who shared their personal stories as well as their efforts to establish tribal tourism as a viable source of community income.

This immersive look into the Dakota’s Indigenous communities was punctuated by stops at national parks, including Badlands, Mount Rushmore and Theodore Roosevelt, surrounding me with breathtaking natural beauty along the way.

Things to Know About Trafalgar’s National Parks and Native Trails of the Dakotas Tour

Badlands of South Dakota

  • The tour doesn’t sugar-coat the harsh history or reality of contemporary life on the reservation, where poverty, unemployment, and addiction persist.
  • 100% of the proceeds of Indigenous experiences on Trafalgar tours go directly to the participating communities.
  • There’s a hands-on component as you learn to make herbal tea from ancient tribal
  • There are light moments, but over-all it’s a profound learning experience.   I wouldn’t recommend it for children younger than 12.
  • Trafalgar’s Be My Guest experiences foster a human connection; you’ll gain insight into the lives of locals as you have lunch with members of the Indigenous Lakota tribes in South Dakota.
  • There were several participants with mobility issues, using walkers and wheelchairs, who were fully able to participate.
  • Though a deeper understanding of Native American culture is a focus, visiting iconic national parks is woven throughout the itinerary.
  • Hotels are clean and comfortable.
  • Breakfast at the hotel each day and many additional meals, including several on reservations, are included. When meals are not included, your Travel Director is ready with multiple recommendations at a variety of price points.
  • Your Travel Director is with you every step of the way. On my tour, Travel Director Randy even gave out his cell phone number for round-the-clock accessibility.
  • Our new coach had Wi-Fi and screens where relevant videos pertaining to Native American culture and history were shown.
  • There were approximately 30 participants on a bus that seated twice that number, so we had room to spread out.

Important Details

Stephen Yellowhawk and his son

Itinerary Overview

The tour starts in Rapid City, South Dakota. Most guests arrive in the late afternoon, taking the hotel shuttle directly from the airport to the Rushmore Hotel and Suites. After you’ve freshened up, get ready for the welcome dinner at the hotel where you’ll meet Stephen Yellowhawk and his young son, who will introduce you to the history of his Sioux people and perform a traditional dance.

After breakfast, we departed for the  Oglala Lakota Living History Village . We met local guide Ivan Sorbel, who expressed how deeply his Lakota people are bound to their land, customs and ancestors.

Next, a visit to Badlands National Park presented dramatic scenery, where the prairie grassland blends with rugged geological formations of eroded buttes, spires and pyramids.

We arrived at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in time for lunch, meeting with Ivan once again, who escorted us to Wounded Knee Memorial, site of the 1890 Massacre where nearly 300 Lakota people were murdered by soldiers of the United States Army.

Dinner is on your own in Rapid City. There are numerous restaurants within a five-minute walk of the hotel. We enjoyed the chili at the Firehouse, located in a re-furbished firehouse.

We started the day visiting Mount Rushmore, where the 60-foot-tall faces of four American Presidents are carved into the massive granite.

Next, it was on to the Crazy Horse Memorial to see the striking monument of the famous Oglala Lakota warrior, a work in progress since 1948. A visit to the museum and a guided walk at the base of the mountain immersed us in the land and its people. Lunch was independent at the onsite restaurant.

Dinner in Rapid City is at your choice of nearby eateries. I splurged on a juicy steak at upscale Delmonico Grill.

After breakfast, we packed our bags, as we were headed to a new hotel for the next two nights. Our first stop was the St. Francis Mission on the Rosebud Indian Reservation, home to the Sicangu Lakota Oyate Nation. The church was a cross-cultural blend of traditional Christian symbols mixed with visually distinctive Native American elements, such as beaded altars and pulpits with buffalos carved in the woodwork.

ELDER TRAVELERS: 8 Best Senior Travel Tour Companies

Next, we met with visionary tribal member Matte Wilson, who runs a program that addresses issues such as food insecurity, food sovereignty and regenerative agriculture, driving home the point that food is much more than what we eat. Matte’s aim is to reconnect tribal members with their buried agricultural legacy that was disrupted long ago, when his people were displaced by European settlers. We were treated to a wonderful meal featuring reservation-grown produce, tender buffalo, and wild rice.

Our last stop was Sinte Gleska University for a lecture by Lakota elder and professor emeritus Victor Douville, that touched on astronomy and art.

We had dinner on our own at our new hotel, Arrowwood Resort & Conference Center at Cedar Shores, situated on the banks of the Missouri River.

The future of the Lakota Nation took center stage as we joined Marla C. Bull Bear, Executive Director of Lakota Youth Development program that helps tribal youth reclaim their language and culture. The Rosebud Reservation teens who frequent the program put on an original play that amplified the intergenerational trauma they face. They served us lunch using ingredients such as buffalo and locally-foraged choke cherries.

On our drive back to the hotel, we stopped to see the striking sculpture Dignity: of Earth & Sky, a 50-foot-high, stainless-steel structure of an Indigenous woman receiving a star quilt.

Dinner was on our own, either back at the Arrowwood Resort or at Al’s Oasis, a truck-stop diner near the hotel.

After breakfast, we checked out of the hotel and headed to South Dakota’s capital, Pierre, for a self-guided tour of the State Capitol building.

We crossed the border into North Dakota and immersed in Plains Indian History at the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. We met Sunshine, a reservation resident who demonstrated how the Lakota and Dakota people harness the medicinal power of plants through practices passed down through the generations. We mixed our own herbal tea bags in a hands-on experience steeped in tradition.

On to Bismarck for an overnight at Radisson Hotel Bismarck and dinner on our own. The downtown local mural art scene was an unexpected treat.

We journeyed on to Earth Lodge Village where we watched a tipi being built and toured an earthen lodge strong enough to withstand the harsh elements of the Northern Plains. We enjoyed watching—and participating in—dances from tribes across North America, from a grass dance to a warrior dance.

Next, it was on to a guided visit at the MHA Nation Interpretive Center , dedicated to sharing the history and culture of three united tribes: Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara. Before we departed, we enjoyed a choice of bison or frybread tacos for dinner. We spent the night at Teddy’s Residential Suites New Town.

We checked out of our hotel and boarded our coach for Theodore Roosevelt National Park . President Roosevelt fell in love with the rugged landscape when he here came to hunt bison in 1883. We visited both the North and South Units of his namesake park, getting acquainted with a variety of Badlands wilderness landscapes. We saw bison, wild horses, and prairie dogs from the comfort of our coach.

Our farewell group dinner was at Rough Riders Hotel, offering time to reflect on the many impactful moments we had during the trip.

After breakfast, it was back on the coach to drive from Medora, North Dakota to the airport in Rapid City for our early afternoon flights home.

Route Notes

You’re on the same motor coach for the entire trip. Our expert driver always put safety first. The route is mostly on well-maintained interstate highways, though expect some winding roads in national parks.

There are no strenuous physical activities on the itinerary, making it a good fit for anyone with mobility issues.

Buffet breakfast at the hotel is included each morning. Many lunches are included, with the highlight being those on the reservation featuring indigenous foods that represent local foodways; these meals offer limited choices.

When dinner is not included, your Travel Director makes suggestions for eateries within walking distance at a variety of price points.

Amenities Along the Way

The indoor swimming pool at Arrowwood Resort was a beauty. Radisson Hotel in Bismarck had refreshing lemonade and homemade cake ready for our group as we checked in, a treat after a long day’s journey. Luggage transfers are easy; you just leave your tagged bag outside your hotel room door by a certain time and let the bellhop do the rest.

Hotels Ratings

Hotels are not fancy but they don’t lack creature comforts.

The first three nights were at the  Rushmore Hotel and Suites  in Rapid City. Rooms have wall maps of the state of South Dakota, adding sense of place. It receives a 4/5 on TripAdvisor and a 7.9/10 on Kayak .

The next 2 nights are at  Arrowwood Resort  in Oacoma, South Dakota. It receives a 3.5/5 on TripAdvisor and a 8/10 on Kayak .

In Bismarck, we spent one night at the centrally-located  Radisson , scoring 3.5/5 on TripAdvisor and 7.4/10 on Kayak .

The next night was at  Teddy’s Residential Suites New Town , scoring a 3.5/5 on TripAdvisor and 7.9/10 on Kayak .

Our last night was spent at  Rough Riders Hotel in Medora,  a historic property where Teddy Roosevelt once stayed. It’s rated 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor .

Who Should (and Shouldn’t) Go on Trafalgar’s National Parks and Native Trails of the Dakotas Tour

View of Mount Rushmore on a sunny day

If you want in-person interactions with tribal communities, you’ll have the opportunity to speak with members of numerous tribes and hear unique perspectives, providing insight and appreciation into the richness and complexities of Native American culture.

If you’ve dreamed of seeing wide-open spaces and the beautiful national parks of the Dakotas, you can’t do better.

Distances are vast on the Great Plains; If you’re very active, long stretches on the coach might be hard to handle.

The itinerary includes frank discussions on the history of the Native American people, including the suffering they’ve been subjected to at the hands of European settlers. I would recommend it for kids at least 12 years of age.

Tour the Dakotas: From the Badlands to the Corn Palace

Often forgotten, the Dakotas are some of the most beautiful parts of America with incredibly natural scenery and wonderful attractions. The area is absolutely not to be missed and here’s why!

Visit National Parks

The Dakotas have some of the most impressive National Parks in America which really should be on every bucket list. Of course the biggest, and most famous, attraction is Mount Rushmore National Memorial (pictured). Located near Keystone, South Dakota, this is one of the most unique monuments in the world.

In North Dakota, explore the famous Badlands at Theodore Roosevelt National Park . Or, spend time following in the footsteps of two great adventurers, as you travel along the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail .

Enjoy Cultural Attractions

After some time wandering the backlands of the Dakotas, take a break to enjoy some of the many cultural attractions like the Crazy Horse Memorial , or the Laura Ingalls Wilder homestead that are so ingrained and unique to the area.

What’s a visit to the Dakotas without experiencing a bit of life as a cowboy? The Dakotas are one of the best spots in the country to take in a traditional rodeo experience . Coupled with a traditional Native American Powwow , these events really showcase some of the best the area has to offer.

There’s plenty of places to have fun in the Dakotas as well. Head to the famous Corn Palace to see a one of kind museum dedicated (and made of) corn.

If you love the days of the Wild West, head to the historic town of Deadwood. The entire town is on the historic register, giving you the opportunity to really explore life in those days.

And, for a little bit of relaxation after a long day of hiking or sightseeing, head to Apple Creek Winery to sample some of North Dakota’s best. The brand makes some really interesting honey wine that is available for tours and tastings.

There is plenty to do and see on any trip through the Dakota’s. Next time you’re looking to visit an interesting and unique place that’s a bit off the beaten path, give this part of America a try.

Griffin Wood on where he’s played most of his professional golf to this point… “I've got a lot of mini tours in the U.S., played on the Dakotas Tour, I played everywhere, APT a little bit, the Asher Tour out in Phoenix and I played (PGA TOUR) Canada two years ago. I had conditional, so I played there half a season. Last year I had conditional, but I didn't get into anything. Yeah, so mostly in the U.S. I've been playing full time for about five years in total even though I'm a little older. I had to take some time off. A little later progression.”

Wood on what was behind his extended break from professional golf… “ I had a back injury where I couldn't play for a couple years. When I came back, I was not shooting 60s on courses. I had to work to support myself and try and get my game back and try and play as much as I could. I played one year out of college. So I graduated in 2012, played for a year. Played pretty well, like was ‑‑ so I kind of proved to myself I could do it in small mini tours. Then I got hurt right before Q‑School right out of college, it would have been 2013. Then I was off for a couple years and was kind of pedaling around for a while. I've been back for the last four, I'd say, playing pretty full time and trying to get back.”

Wood on the playoff at Monday’s open qualifier… “I was playing solid golf and I bogeyed my last hole in regulation. It was a pretty easy hole, and I was pretty devastated because I thought that would be the difference. But I rebounded really well, because after I made that bogey, you know, you can go south quick. Me and another guy, Matt Atkins, birdied the first hole in a 5‑for‑2 (playoff). I had my head on straight, that was the big thing, and I was able to play right after I finished. I went right to the playoff hole, which helped. We finished in the dark, we didn't have any more time to play another hole and it worked out perfectly.”

Additional Player Notes

  • Tim Widing (4th/-15), who won last week’s LECOM Suncoast Classic, has four holes remaining in his second round and is one of three Korn Ferry Tour winners in the top 10 of the leaderboard
  • The only other Korn Ferry Tour winners in the current top 10 of the leaderboard are Kyle Jones (T5/-12) and Andrew Kozan (T5/-12)
  • Amateur Preston Stout (T11/-11), who attended J.J. Pearce High School in nearby Richardson, Texas, follows 4-under 67 with 7-under 64; he is a freshman at Oklahoma State University who earned co-medalist honors Wednesday at the 2024 Big 12 Conference Championship, and is making his first PGA TOUR-sanctioned start

Thank goodness I met by my long time and trusty observer, Dave Fronczak. Dave has been my observer since 2011. After weeks of planning, we wondered if winter would ever end this year. We had above average snow across much of the Dakotas the past winter, with many areas setting or getting very close to setting records. As the waterfowl survey unfolded, it became clear all that snow this winter set the stage for some particularly impressive waterfowl breeding conditions.

aerial of wetlands across the landscape

From Pierre, SD, we flew the western regions of the Dakota’s, the geographic region west of the Missouri River. There was as much quality breeding habitat and wetlands were in about as good of condition as you could wish for, the best I have seen in the past 16 years I have been flying the survey. From there we moved to Mitchell, SD and began flying the eastern regions of the Dakotas including the Missouri and Prairie Coteau’s and the glacial drift plain. The southeast region of South Dakota had improved significantly from 2022 as far as the amount of water on the landscape, but there was  still some room for improvement.

Aerial view of wetlands

From Mitchell, SD, we flew to Aberdeen SD, Jamestown, ND, and then on to Minot, ND. I have never seen the prairie pothole region of the Dakotas looking more impressive than what we observed this year. We saw full to overflowing wetlands, flowing streams and landscapes full of vegetation. The region from Huron, SD, to Jamestown, ND, was particularly impressive, with Northern pintails abounding! There were some parts in northeast North Dakota that were dry, mostly as a result of tile draining over the years, similar to what we encounter in the Red River Valley every year. Tile draining is when farmers bury drainage systems under their fields to move water away from areas that would naturally form wetlands and make particularly good breeding and brooding habitat. It’s sad to see and the tile draining continues to expand every year, reducing the quality of waterfowl breeding habitat.

I first started flying the Dakotas in 2008, and I have seen wet years and dry years. I have seen the prairie pothole region of the Dakotas look pretty good in some years, average some years, and even in pretty poor conditions in 2020 and 2021. I will say, I have never seen the pothole region look better or more impressive than what we observed this year. I believe the stage is set for some very good duck production out of the Dakotas in 2023. Conditions are excellent across much of the region. There was a fair amount of vacant habitat this year. I suppose that is still from the lag time of production catching up from the poor years of 2020 and 2021.

It was particularly gratifying to see all of this, as this will be my last survey that I fly. All good things must come to an end and I will retire in September, just in time to sample this years’ production from the ground in my duck blind! I’m looking forward to it. I have relished the opportunity to be part of this group of dedicated pilot biologists! I can’t imagine a more professional and dedicated group. And I’d particularly like to thank Dave for 13 years in the right seat! Here’s to hoping your fall flight is as good as mine!

Customer

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
