It seems like a long time, now, since we were introduced to The Game as 50 Cent’s understudy and heir apparent; whether or not their subsequent feuds were clever marketing ploys or genuine fallouts will probably never be totally clear, but it’s probably fair to say that neither rapper has seen their career take the kind of turns they would have been hoping for. It’s a shame, in a lot of ways, because The Game’s debut full-length, The Documentary, was superb; cuts including ‘How We Do’, ‘Hate It or Love It’ and ‘Dreams’ remain staples of his live set, and rightly so. He’s still a regular on the UK live circuit, in fact, and continues to deliver a very solid hip hop show. It might be a blessing, in fact, that he never quite graduated to rap’s very biggest leagues, because there’s no pretense or rock star nonsense to his gigs; I can’t imagine him ranting about fashion houses for twenty minutes and wearing ridiculous masks for the duration of his performance any time soon. He brings a hype man with him, but mainly for the old-fashioned purpose of riling up the crowd; his flow remains sharp enough that he doesn’t need anybody backing him up. A DJ drops the beats, but it’s really the crowd’s relentless energy that provides the bedrock of The Game’s shows, a decade on from his emergence.

Great show by the Game.
He absolutely nailed it.
Shame about the new type of football chanting type fans in hop hop concerts.
Other than that it was a great show.

A musical tour of Manchester: from the Hallé to the Happy Mondays
Every genre of music has made its mark on Manchester, including dialect ballads, classical, TV theme tunes and all the strands of post-punk. Welcome to the north-west sound
M yth distorts any city’s musical history, and in Manchester myth looms as large as the new Co-op Live , a £365m, 23,500-capacity mega-venue that opens today and will soon be staging big-name acts, including Take That. So, for every occasion a music fan mentions the hit-making boy band or, for that matter, 10cc or the Hollies, a thousand more bark back: Joy Division, the Fall, Happy Mondays. Not that 10cc were a small Manc band, but they peaked before punk and a wall went up at the end of the 1970s that relegated all that had passed prior to 4 June 1976 – the night the Sex Pistols performed at the Lesser Free Trade Hall – to prehistory, as in dinosaurs, fossils, folk musicians. New hagiographies about music impresario Tony Wilson (1950-2007) are no doubt at the printers as I write. But how about we spend half an hour mooching round the Rainy City aboard the free buses and trams in search of the underplayed, surprising and tangential – with a few Gen X/6 Music standards for when we’re stuck at the lights.
You might not think Coronation Street a promising departure point, but it gives us an in to Bowton’s Yard. It’s one of those ditties that may prompt unpleasant memories of the BBC TV series Sit Thi Deawn, but listen carefully and you’ll hear it is in fact a Victorian reality show made song. Written by Marsden-born, Stalybridge-based Samuel Laycock, it inspired Tony Warren when he was devising the characters for his Weatherfield/Salford-set soap opera. Granada Studios on Quay Street also played a leading role in disseminating the north-western sound, from regional accents to theme tunes to the Beatles’ first TV appearance , in October 1962.
Dialect ballads spoke truth to power after Peterloo – memorialised in 2019 by Jeremy Deller’s burial mound-like stone tump – and during the cotton famine . To spread the word, broadsides were run off at printers around the Oldham Street-Swan Street junction. Lancashire songs were central to the folk revival of the 1960s. Harry Boardman, a singer and collector from Failsworth, unearthed many anonymous songs of protest and historical record. Edward II has recorded a reggae version of the Great Flood, about the time the Medlock burst its banks in 1872. Jennifer Reid , from Middleton, performs The New Poor Law Bill a cappella on her album Gradely Manchester.
The most famous folk number, Ewan MacColl’s Dirty Old Town , alludes to a “gasworks wall” or “gasworks croft”, depending on the version. The works were in Ordsall, bounded by West Egerton Street, Liverpool Street and Regent Road. Prior to their demolition in 2019, a prosaic infographic (not quite a “ muriel ”) was placed on the West Egerton Street wall. The Working Class Movement Library is a repository of MacColl’s work and life and has significant holdings of sheet music and song lyrics.
The Hallé Orchestra was founded by Sir Charles Hallé, who was conductor for the first concert at the Free Trade Hall on 30 January 1858. The Hallé premiered Elgar’s Symphony No 1 and Vaughan Williams’s Symphony No 8. The latter, dedicated to the orchestra’s celebrated conductor John Barbirolli, took place at the Kings Hall , a converted tea house at Belle Vue (demolished to make way for a car auction centre) on 2 May 1956. The BBC recorded it a few days later. The third movement, a cavatina, is a swirl of lark-like ascents and descents.
Since 1996, the orchestra’s HQ has been the purpose-built, vibration-proof Bridgewater Hall , with former St Peter’s church in Ancoats, a hulking redbrick Romanesque building, used for rehearsals, recordings and intimate shows. Manchester has an opera house , originally known as the New theatre. Recent shows include The Full Monty and Peppa Pig’s Fun Day Out, but it may get weightier fare as the ENO relocates to Manchester over the next five years. The region’s greatest opera singer was, like so much Manchester talent, from way outside town. Tom Burke, a miner from Leigh, was known as the “ Lancashire Caruso ”. What used to be the city’s Hippodrome is now a Wetherspoons named after him.
The Manchester School includes Accrington-born Harrison Birtwistle, Salford’s Peter Maxwell Davies and German immigrant Alexander Goehr, who met at the Royal Manchester College of Music in the 1950s. They founded the New Music Manchester group with pianist John Ogdon, who had attended Manchester Grammar School, and trumpeter Elgar Howarth. Exponents of avant-garde experimentation, they shunned cotton-themed concertos and any kind of parochialism.
If Unesco dispensed rosettes for demolition, Manchester would have many. Most of the old taverns that hosted turns, popular dance salons and music hall venues have been razed, together with mills, warehouses and factories. Concert halls and fun palaces were removed to make way for multistorey car parks and office blocks. The Free Trade Hall , where locals including Gracie Fields, Van der Graaf Generator and James played, as well as Dylan (AKA “ Judas ” as he was called at a gig there in 1966 ), Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and Genesis, is now a hotel . Does a ribald, rollicking spirit live on from the boozy days of industrial Manchester? Certainly the refurbished Band on the Wall – which reopened in March – celebrates its location on the foundations of the George & Dragon and nearby Rising Sun pubs.
Every genre of popular music surfaced in Manchester between 1950 and the present, including big band, beat, rhythm and blues, soul, chart-oriented pop, punk, goth and all the strands of post-punk. There are not as many landmarks as songs, partly because, as mentioned, the wrecking ball is unsentimental and also, because pop stars have generally used their art to get away – lyrically first, and then physically. The Bee Gees, who claimed to have practised harmonising at their childhood home at 51 Keppel Road , Chorlton-cum-Hardy, never knowingly screamed a word about the town.
Northern soul, which arrived via Liverpool docks and Burtonwood airbase, drew large followings in Stoke, Wigan, Blackpool and, before any of those , Manchester. The Twisted Wheel on Brazennose Street and, later, Whitworth Street, had gigs by the Hollies and Freddie and the Dreamers, and less well-known bands such as Powerhouse 6 , but is best known for its legendary northern soul nights. The building has gone but Twisted Wheel “lives on”, according to a members-only Facebook page , at Area, 50 Sackville Street. The Ritz, on Whitworth St, survives as an O2 franchise. Originally opened as a dance hall (with a sprung floor) in 1927, it hosted a Dancing in the Dark evening in the 50s and 60s, fronted by Crumpsall’s Phil “King of the Ritz” Moss and his Band (which later became a stalwart on TV’s Come Dancing), and went on to transition through beat, northern soul, disco and mainstream rock scenes. The mobile phone firm also owns the famous art deco-style Apollo , long a fixture for bands on tour. Stockport’s MoR hitmakers 10cc were a classic art school, let’s-go-to-London-asap outfit, but they played here when they came home, as did Sad Café.
The Pistols concert in 1976 made the Lesser Free Trade Hall a holy-of-holies in Manc muso circles, but the Electric Circus , in Collyhurst (birthplace of pianist and crooner Les Dawson), earned its credentials through many seminal punk performances, including the first gig by Warsaw (Joy Division’s first name), and shows by Buzzcocks, John Cooper Clarke, the Fall, the Nosebleeds and Slaughter and the Dogs, among others. The fact it had previously been a cinema, Bernard Manning’s Top Hat club and a bingo hall should surely have made it one for the heritage buffs to list.
Richard Boon and Howard Devoto launched the New Hormones label in 1977 at a then ramshackle, now listed former hat merchants’ warehouse at 50 Newton Street . The first release, the Spiral Scratch EP , was a punk watershed and a declaration that bands needed neither London nor major labels. In 1980, Boon and others started up The Beach Club (a reference to the Situationist slogan “Under the pavement, the beach!”) at Oozits on Newgate Street. In 1978, Factory Records began as a WFH DIY disruptive startup at Alan Erasmus’s first-floor flat at 86 Palatine Road (now blue plaqued), only moving to a proper HQ on Charles Street in 1990 – where it was officially incorporated with the catalogue number FAC 251 (the name of a venue for cover bands on the site, part owned by Peter Hook). The Factory was the name of a night at the Russell Club on Royce Road in Hulme that ran from 1978-80; two years later the Haçienda (FAC 51) opened in a former yacht builders’ shop and warehouse on Whitworth Street West, beside the Rochdale Canal. The site is now occupied by “ iconic ” apartments.
The last Factory catalogue number, FAC 501, was used for the plaque on Wilson’s coffin, and no number adorns designer Peter Saville’s headstone for his business partner in Southern Cemetery . Fabled producer Martin Hannett is also buried at the necropolis – said to be entered via the Smiths’ Cemetry Gates.
There’s no better terminus than a musical graveyard. Inevitably, dozens of Manchester music sites are missing from this hop, skip and jump, including Rochdale’s recording studios, Festival of the Tenth Summer venues and countless bedrooms, garages and rave locations. But most tell versions of the same story, just as some songs seem like Venn diagrams of influence; Oasis by Happy Mondays sounds like New Order with lyrics by Morrissey or Ian Curtis, on a bad day (“You went too far, and it’s gone all the wrong way”). If you want to aurally vacuum up every Manc motif in a single song, steam on in to Mike Garry and Joe Duddell’s St Anthony: An Ode to Anthony H Wilson (Andrew Weatherall Remix; lyrics here ), perhaps while walking from the thrusting Aviva Studios/Factory International behemoth to the Epping Walk Bridge to search hopelessly – à la 80s – for Hulme Crescents and the dead souls of yesteryear.

Manchester United’s U.S. tour: Ten Hag authority, ticket prices and a Glazer appearance
Erik ten Hag kept a tight grip on who could watch Manchester United train during their now-concluded pre-season tour of the United States. But the final session of the trip, in San Diego, was open to fans. Lasting about an hour, it provided a small window into the mind of a manager whose exacting standards and meticulous eye for detail are finding even greater influence at United as he enters his second campaign in charge.

Ten Hag, wearing shorts, T-shirt and a baseball cap, to protect him from the Californian sunshine, stepped in whenever an aspect of a drill wasn’t to his liking.
One moment, in particular, stood out.
Antony was on the wing during a small-sided game and had space ahead to run into. Instead, he turned back and passed to Harry Maguire , who then went back again to goalkeeper Andre Onana . Ten Hag stopped things immediately and asked his players why they had funnelled the ball deeper rather than go forward.

He then joined in the drill himself, a man who made over 200 first-team appearances for FC Twente in his Dutch homeland showing them how he wanted the move to go; picking up possession in midfield, beckoning a press from Alvaro Fernandez , then passing to Victor Lindelof and dropping into defence for the return.
Ball at his feet, Ten Hag ushered Maguire forwards so he would be available for his next pass.
Maguire moved into position and passed first-time to Jadon Sancho , who was in the false-nine role, the ball going beyond Antony, who was a decoy. Antony then spun in behind to get the final pass from Sancho and run clear.
It was a routine evident in United’s build-up play against Borussia Dortmund in the tour’s final match in Las Vegas on Sunday.
Bryce Guzzetta, a United fan who watched the session and is event coordinator for Red Devils of San Diego, a supporters’ club, said it came across as Ten Hag wanting to instil “muscle memory” into his players.
“He seemed very focused on people being in the right places at the right time and especially off the ball movement and awareness,” Guzzetta said. “It was good to get a peek behind the curtain.”
Erik ten Hag: 'It's the difference between a manager and a human being'
That peek included technical director, and former United and Scotland midfielder, Darren Fletcher playing a part in one of the training games, now 39, and putting in a good tackle.
The session, at the University of California/San Diego, had started with the goalkeepers — Onana, Tom Heaton , Dean Henderson and Nathan Bishop — playing rondos around mannequins in circles that increased in size, the emphasis on their footwork clear.
A drone went up into the sky to record events, and Ten Hag manoeuvred a blue mannequin into the precise position he desired, coming back to make an adjustment of a few inches after yanking it out of the grass. He waved to the 100-plus crowd in the stand as he ran back to the main group to deliver a talk.
This focus on minutiae from the manager extended to matters off the pitch, notably as far as the colour of club kit to be worn by players and staff each day. An email would land in all employee inboxes to instruct which version of three looks they should pick out of the wardrobe the next morning, right down to the socks — the idea being that everyone on the trip should look and be as one when on work duty. Making attendance at breakfast compulsory for the entire travelling party was applying the same principle.
Ten Hag’s control covered United’s commercial commitments on tour, too. He would read documents running to 30 pages which detailed the specific requirements of players at sponsorship events, and come back with changes, including matching certain members of his squad with the arranged activity. After a year in charge, he feels he knows his players’ personalities and wanted the events to be suitable.
While Ten Hag understands the commercial benefit travelling the globe like this brings, and how the £20million or so raised by each tour can help with signings, he also drew a line. “Once he’s made a decision, there is no changing his mind,” said a source close to the club.
Having looked at the schedule in advance, Ten Hag reduced the three commercial days to two, insisting his players needed some space to relax on the 11-day, four-match trip that also saw fixtures in New York and Houston, Texas.
Last Friday, July 28, was designated as a day off, with the players arranging three fourballs for nearby Torrey Pines golf course, which has staged the US Open and overlooks the Pacific Ocean. It was a 30-minute walk from the hotel which served as United’s base for that leg of the trip.
The evening before, United booked out the rooftop bar at a Marriott hotel overlooking the USS Midway, which was once the longest-serving aircraft carrier in U.S. Navy history (47 years) and is now a museum. Players and staff mingled before being allowed to do their own thing.
“What is important? Sleep, recovery, nutrition,” Ten Hag said during his sit-down interview with United reporters who travelled Stateside. “Three key areas, and when you don’t do this right, you have a problem.”
That tone was set from take-off, when United flew from Edinburgh following a July 19 friendly against French club Lyon at Murrayfield, the home of Scotland’s national rugby union team. The players were told to sleep so they could wake up for 8am New York time. On the way back to Manchester from Las Vegas two weeks later, they went to sleep early so their body clocks began getting adjusted to UK time.
Football director John Murtough had by then already returned to England, to complete the transfer of Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund . Murtough was in the U.S. at each stop before Vegas, however, and mixed with fans at functions in New York and San Diego.
Chief operating officer Collette Roche also attended several supporter meet-ups, which this summer were factored into a United pre-season tour for the first time. Usually, interactions between the club and fans are confined to impromptu gatherings outside a team hotel or open training session, but United were involved in 23 events across the four cities, which they estimate meant direct meetings with 5,000 supporters. Former United stars Bryan Robson, Denis Irwin, Andrew Cole and Wes Brown spoke multiple times.
That coordination is led by Rick McGagh, head of fan engagement and Richard Arnold’s first appointment after becoming chief executive in February last year. McGagh and Roche twice made three-hour round-trips from the team’s base in deep New Jersey to be at events in Manhattan, and answer questions from fans. Roche had a meeting with Ten Hag about the importance of including fan elements well in advance of flying out.
The Pingry School, in the New Jersey town of Basking Ridge, was chosen for its remoteness as well as its superb facilities. Set way past the suburbs and commuter towns surrounding New York City, the location allowed for privacy, with only a smattering of fans turning up for autographs compared to the hundreds seen at the more city-centre locations used in previous years.
The appeal for United was the pitch. First laid in 1994, to specifications made by the Italian national team ahead of the U.S. hosted World Cup that year, it is ideal for Premier League football clubs.
The rest of the facilities are high-end too. It’s officially known as the Miller A Bugliari ’52 Athletics Center in tribute to the school’s long-time coach. Bugliari is 87 and still coaching Pingry, where he had been a pupil and graduated in 1952, into his 63rd season. He is on good terms with Sir Alex Ferguson, having been introduced by mutual friend Charlie Stillitano, a Pingry School old boy and an influential figure in U.S. soccer.
Grumpy Ferguson, missiles in LA and Bob Dylan: How United 'cracked' America in 2003
Bugliari is considered the most successful coach in U.S. school-level sport by number of games won, and when he oversaw his 900th victory in 2021, Ferguson rang him while he was still on the touchline and left a message of congratulations.
Stillitano was on site for United’s visit this summer under Ten Hag, with Pingry making alterations to accommodate the club, turning three squash courts into meeting rooms, with carpet being laid and televisions and massage tables installed. The school had 400lb of ice delivered each day to cater for players’ ice baths, according to the Tapinto Basking Ridge news site.
Security was tight. The local police department sent eight officers, Pingry had 11 operational staff dotted around, and United took 12 of their own guards.
Players did beckon school children over the barricade after one session to pose for pictures and sign autographs next to the team bus, which was decked in red and featuring landmarks from the cities they were visiting on this tour. David Fahey, Pingry’s director of institutional advancement, whose son got a photograph with Jadon Sancho, said: “That was above what we might have expected. The players were respectful and polite.”
A VIP tent, with speciality ice creams, bug repellent and towels that were iced but not wet, was erected so United co-owner Avram Glazer, his family, and other executives could mingle. Glazer attended training on the two days before the Arsenal game at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium on Saturday, July 22, shaking Ten Hag’s hand but not having a full conversation. Ten Hag was eager to get out for training.
Glazer was seen after the match at the home of the NFL ’s New York Giants and New York Jets, but would only say, “I’m here to enjoy the game” when asked for a takeover update. He declined to answer a follow-up about a reported split among his siblings on how to proceed on a proposed sale.
Before kick-off, there was a tailgate in the car park. Organised by United, it was well attended and had a raucous atmosphere, with green and gold flares being set off as well as anti-Glazer chants breaking out.
Michael Stanley was one supporter in amongst it. “I feel like there’s just a fuel in the United States right now that there wasn’t before,” he said. “This feels monumental. This is like the first soccer game I’ve attended where the turnout is insane.”
Olivia Haberberger said: “I was in there for the green and gold flare and it was like tear gas in my face.”
Stanley and Haberberger travelled from Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, a six-hour drive, for the game, and met their friends Sierra Daniels and Alec Goodwin, who live in New York City.
Andy Sookram caught a train across from New York’s eastern borough of Queens. He has been a United fan since 2006, when Cristiano Ronaldo ’s performances for Portugal at the World Cup got him hooked. “Then we won three in a row,” he said. “When people say, ‘Are you a glory hunter?’. (I answer) No, because (if I was) I would have supported Chelsea or Arsenal, who won it the three years before.
“It means a lot United have come out — I left my wife and child at home to come to the game.”
Sookram spent a year at university in England in 2014 and attended United matches throughout his stay. He does not think competitive Premier League or Champions League fixtures should move abroad, as happens in the NFL, which plays matches in England, Germany and Mexico: “To grow the game it would be great, but as a fan, it should stay in the UK. I respect tradition. Living in the UK, experiencing the culture, I do understand it.” He paid $230 (£181) for his ticket including fees — which is comparable to what it costs to attend an NFL game. “Ten Hag putting out the first-team squad is worth the money.”
When the tour got to San Diego, there was some anger among fans over ticket pricing, given United fielded their under-21 team in the match there.
That friendly against Wrexham , who play three divisions below the Premier League on the English football ladder but are big news in the U.S. and around the world because of Hollywood-star owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney and the Emmy-nominated documentary series following events at the club, had been billed as featuring a youth-focussed United side when first announced but locally there was anticipation that the crowd would see some senior-squad stars.
Joseph Garcia told The Athletic he paid $207 for his seat via Ticketmaster, including booking fees, and said: “For a working-class person and today’s economy, $207 means a lot and that product we saw was absolutely not even close to being worth that.”
Garcia has written a complaint to the club detailing how fans were “vocally disappointed” in the ground. United apologised in their reply but said the game was impossible to brand as specifically an under-21s fixture due to possible changes to the line-up. Tickets, with prices set by the promoter, were also available for $70 and United also gave 50 away for free to the local supporters’ club.
The tour’s final game against Dortmund, in Las Vegas on Sunday night, was visibly short of the stadium’s 65,000 capacity, with the official attendance given at 50,857, but across eight days, a total of 235,168 supporters watched United’s four matches.
For Roche, the United executive, being in the U.S. allowed her another look at stadiums which are much more modern than Old Trafford. The MetLife, the Snapdragon in San Diego, the NRG in Houston, and the Allegiant in Las Vegas are all examples of excellent construction and offered ideas for the rebuild of United’s home ground.
Plans for that have long been drawn up, of course, ranging from renovation of the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand, to building a totally new Old Trafford, which could cost £2billion. Co-owner Joel Glazer has seen them, as have the bidding parties on a takeover or minority investment. But progress is on hold until there is clarity on the club’s “strategic review” launched last November.
Before kick-off in the win over Arsenal, New Jersey’s state governor Phil Murphy said he would be happy to talk to United about MetLife Stadium, which he is lobbying to be chosen to host the World Cup final in 2026.
In San Diego, United stayed at the Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa, which was a 10-minute walk from the university pitches they trained on. There was a Mediterranean feel to the setting, with its terracotta buildings, seaside location, and garden squares, one of which was converted into a space for squad members to play basketball and table tennis.
There was time there for players to relax and chat in the bar, some of their conversations touching on the takeover, the club’s need for a new main striker, and who is the best defender at United.
Also discussed was Omar Meziane’s role in making life enjoyable on this tour. Appointed as United’s chef in January, Meziane is popular because of his varied menus which, while the club travelling, are in part influenced by local cuisine.
Meziane, who has previously been the performance chef for the England cricket team and the Great Britain rowing team, as well as top-flight English rugby union clubs Harlequins and Wasps, travelled out the day before the main party at each stage of the trip to familiarise himself with the kitchen that would be used, meet the chefs already in place at the hotels, and source fresh food.
The game in Houston against Real Madrid was where the only major setback of the tour occurred. The ankle injury suffered by Kobbie Mainoo will sideline him for the start of the campaign and Ten Hag’s disappointment over it in the press conference afterwards was palpable. The 18-year-old midfielder was playing himself into contention for selection when the real action starts next weekend through his performances in these friendlies.
In that same post-match press conference, Ten Hag said the fact his team did not score in the 2-0 defeat “absolutely” emphasised why a new striker was required. Anthony Martial has been training with the squad but did not play a single second across the four U.S. matches.
In hindsight, it is clear Ten Hag knew the Hojlund deal was close, so felt free to make the point. By the time he did his end-of-tour interview with reporters three days later, the transfer had been agreed.
Ten Hag was serious throughout that 25-minute chat, but finished by suggesting, with a chuckle, that one of his inquisitors reminded him of 1950s pop star Ritchie Valens because of his colourful shirt. “La Bamba,” Ten Hag laughed, adding it was attire suitable for United’s final stop.
There in Las Vegas, United stayed at the Westin — a hotel in that city built on gambling that does not have a casino. Ten Hag, it seemed, did not want to gamble on players staying away from the slot machines. On the pitch, United played a losing hand.
While the loss to Real Madrid was a case of one team being better than the other, the 3-2 defeat by Dortmund owed to sloppy mistakes from United. Ten Hag said the lapses were “unforgivable”.
Heaton and defender Brandon Williams had a row about the blame for Dortmund’s second goal, which came immediately from United’s restart after conceding an equaliser. In the second half, new signing Onana sprinted from the six-yard box to shout at Maguire for a mistake that led to a Dortmund shot on target.
Onana had shown his softer side after his first session as a United player following a move from Inter Milan back in New Jersey, striking up a conversation with new colleagues Amad , Hannibal and Anthony Elanga as they walked from the recovery room to the team bus.
In any case, defender Lisandro Martinez insisted United are “better for” players calling out each other directly like that. “If you are focused, you can fight with your team-mates as well, you need to make sure everyone is really sharp,” he said, while in the bowels of Allegiant Stadium.
When Ten Hag came through the mixed zone that night, he made a point of smiling and waving to reporters. “Safe flight home,” he said.
Three defeats to finish their U.S. tour and some elements of concern, but the United manager is satisfied with the club’s transfer work and, having put some useful training in the bank, knows more meaningful matches are ahead.

Manchester United kick off their pre-season in Norway where they face recently relegated Leeds United. Before United head stateside, Ten Haag and his player will travel north to Scotland to face Lyon at Murrayfield, the home of Scottish Rugby. Their American tour begins on the East Coast in New York, taking on fierce Premier League rivals Arsenal.
The Reds then fly west for games against the most famous forth-tier side in the world, Wrexham . Infamously owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, United will face the Welsh side on the 25th of July, before travelling to Texas to face 14-time European Champions Real Madrid.
Wrexham pre-season tour: Everything we know
United conclude their trip in the Sin City, Las Vegas, where they play Bundesliga runners-up Borussia Dortmund at the new Allegiant Stadium, home of the recently relocated Las Vegas Raiders NFL team.
Why are Man Utd playing Wrexham?
The biggest surprise to many fans when they saw the pre-season fixtures was the presence of League 2 Wrexham among the likes of Real Madrid and Arsenal. Wrexham won promotion for the National League in dramatic fashion, winning the league over Notts County to secure a place in the Football League next season.
The club have flourished under the ownership of Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney and their notoriety has helped land a pre-season fixtures with the 20-time champions of England. Manchester United football director John Murtough stated that the game is an opportunity for United to “ give opportunities for our most promising young Academy players to gain valuable experience in the first team environment ”

United begin their pre-season in Oslo, Norway where they face Leeds United before flying back to the UK to take on Lyon in Edinburgh.
Man United will rack up the air miles on their pre-season tour, beginning on the east coast before flying to the west coast. MetLife Stadium, home of the New York Giants and New York Jets in the NFL, will host their first game on US soil against Arsenal. United will fly from San Diego immediately after facing Wrexham on the 25th July to Houston, Texas where they face Real Madrid just 24 hours after the final whistle at Snapdragon Stadium.
The home of the Houston Texans, NRG Stadium, will host Manchester United vs Real Madrid. The stadium has hosted two Super Bowls, most recently in 2017, and has a retractable roof which may be used for the fixture. Finally, Allegiant Stadium hosts United’s final pre-season game in the United States against Borussia Dortmund. Opened in 2020 to relocate the Las Vegas Raiders from their former home in Oakland, California, Allegiant Stadium will host the 2024 Superbowl.
What are the kick-off times?
If United fans want to watch all of their pre-season games in America, they may have to adjust their sleeping schedules.
Of course, the friendly against Leeds in Norway and Lyon in Scotland will kick off at reasonable times, with a 4pm and 2pm kick off times scheduled respectively.

The time difference gets even trickier when United head to the West Coast. United fans will have to set an alarm clock if they fancy watching their side take on Wrexham in San Diego which is billed for a 7.30pm local time kick off, or 3.30am UK time due to the seven-hour difference between the UK and the United States west coast. The Real Madrid game the next day in Houston begins at 4pm local time, or midnight UK time.
The final game of the tour in Las Vegas will also require United fans to set their alarm clock. Man United vs Borussia Dortmund is scheduled for a 6pm local time start or 2am UK time.

The Cube Live Has Opened In Manchester Where You Can Take On The Game With Friends
Oh, how we love a game show here in the UK. And The Cube is no exception. Prime tea-time viewing and hosted by national sweetheart, Phillip Schofield, the show has it all – including the “I could do that EASY” factor. So, if you’ve ever sat there screaming at the telly while a contestant royally effs things up – now’s your chance to show off your skills, once and for all.
Opening up within the Arndale inside a brand new ‘Urban Playground’, The Cube Live recreates the gameshow IRL for fans to take on – marking the first live experience in the show’s 13-year history.
Promising to be “Manchester’s biggest and best experiential day out” yet, the unique new venue allows guests to step into the famous perspex cube to take on a series of seemingly simple tasks – some of which you may recognise from the show itself. The game boasts seven iconic games – both single and double player, just like on the show – and will require participants to showcase serious skill, nerve and determination in order to beat The Cube.
Additionally, Urban Playground will also be home to Tech-Infused Mini Golf, Putters and award-winning burger bar THE BUTCHER – which is making its way over to the UK from the Netherlands for the first time ever.
Allowing guests to take part in the “best putting experience in the world”, Putters consists of nine tech-infused holes, where groups of up to six can challenge one another to a game of mini golf. The game is amplified by on-screen animations and audio, along with a scoreboard, where players can fight to become the best player in Manchester that day.
At THE BUTCHER , guests can fill up on delicious ‘haute couture’ burgers, that have become famous across Europe, made from the very best Aberdeen Angus beef. If that wasn’t all, guests can also take advantage of a fully-stocked bar serving cocktails, wines, beers, liqueurs and more.
Holly Pye, Commercial Director at Objective Media Group says of the opening: “We are very excited that The Cube is joining Urban Playground. At last members of the public will get the opportunity to play these iconic games for themselves and get a taste of the adrenaline.”
Urban Playground is open now, and you can find it near Foot Asylum in the Upper Mall, Corn Exchange side. Get tickets here.

All about FC Barcelona v Manchester City on the 2024 US Tour
FC Barcelona's first opponent on the 2024 US Tour will be the all-conquering Manchester City managed by Pep Guardiola, winners of the Champions League and Premiership last season. The game is on Tuesday 30 July at a time yet to be confirmed and will be the first test for Barça 2024/25. The tour will continue with games against Real Madrid and AC Milan.
The game will be played at the Camping World Stadium , Orlando. Holding 60,219 people, it was built in 1936 for soccer and American football and hosted games at the 1994 FIFA World Cup, the Copa America Centenario in 2016 and many other major sporting events. This is the first time the teams have ever met in the US, but they have played two friendlies before. Both the previous games between Barça and Man City were at Spotify Camp Nou, one in the Joan Gamper Trophy of 2009 (which City won 1-0) and a 3-3 draw in a charity friendly in 2022.
Previous meetings with Pep Guardiola
Since Pep Guardiola left FC Barcelona in 2012, he has played four competitive matches against his former club, and the current record is two wins for him and two wins for Barça in clashes against Bayern in 2015 and Manchester City in 2016.

Shaun Murphy fires warning to players tempted by breakaway snooker tour
Share this with
Shaun Murphy tells players considering leaving the World Snooker Tour that they should ‘be careful what they wish for’ as uncertainty could await them.
There have been plenty of rumours of a breakaway tour circling, with Judd Trump revealing he had been approached but dismissed the idea of leaving WST.
Mark Williams has been teasing that he may not be playing on the main tour next season , but nothing has been announced of a rumoured new circuit or who would be playing on it.
Murphy is well aware of the rumours but says he knows little about the venture and has not been approached to play himself.
‘It’s obviously something we’re talking about. We’ve heard a lot about it. I haven’t been approached by anybody, I don’t know anything about it,’ he said. ‘Nobody’s rung me.
‘I’m led to believe some players have signed NDAs (non-disclosure agreements) not to talk about it. I saw my name mentioned in despatches that I have. I haven’t. I don’t know anything about it and will finish this season and look to return to the tour next season.
‘I haven’t got any interest in it. As far as I’m aware it doesn’t exist. I haven’t seen anything about it. If that changes I’ll let you know, but at the moment I don’t know anything about it. It’s all rumour and hearsay, which I haven’t got time for.
‘I don’t think many of us do the game any favours talking about these things. It’s just conjecture and rumour. These people who have been approached know more than I do. I was pleased to see Judd nail his colours to the mast. He’s obviously been approached. That’s more than me.’
Ronnie O’Sullivan will not be joining any rival tour after signing an agreement with Saudi Arabia, but he has backed any players to take whatever offer they feel is best for them and their families.
Murphy can see why players late in their career might be tempted by an offer of guaranteed money elsewhere, but suggests that might show a lack of loyalty.
‘I’ve seen comments from players saying they’ve got to make choices for their families and what suits them. I think that’s right,’ said the Magician. ‘These players have had their time, maybe, they’ve had their years.
‘They’ve taken and taken and taken from the sport and they want to take even more. Good luck to them. It’s a shame they haven’t considered putting a little bit more back into the tour that’s given them so much before they run away.
‘But I know very little about it. I’d be scared to comment on it really because I don’t know enough about it. I assume these players are being paid a lot of money and who am I to say they shouldn’t be taking it. I half understand it.’
Players are allowed to play exhibition events when WST tournaments are not being held, but Murphy is keen that anyone joining an actual rival tour, clashing with WST events, should not be able to dip back in.
‘I think I’d like to see a situation where players have to declare their allegiance one way or the other,’ he said. ‘They can play on the World Snooker Tour with the majors, the Triple Crowns, the history and heritage that Judd talked about.
‘Or they can go and play on a new tour with unknown backers, people we don’t know. How long does this pot of money last? It’s a case of be careful what you wish for.
‘I wouldn’t like a situation where players can go off and then come back and play in the Triple Crown events. I don’t think that should happen. You stick your flag in the ground, declare your loyalty somewhere and see how we go.
‘Players want the independence to play where they want when they want and I really do understand that. I’m not sure you can have your cake and eat it.’
Murphy was beaten 13-9 by Stephen Maguire in the second round of the World Championship on Sunday and the Scot had a different view on any opportunities that might be arising elsewhere.
The 43-year-old said: ‘I’m only hearing it from other players. I think it’s good.
‘If somebody else is interested to come in and some of the numbers being thrown about is interesting.
‘My ears are always open, I’m always listening. I’ve not been approached, but my door’s always open. Why not? If there’s a few years guaranteed [money], especially someone like me who is having to go to these qualifiers. I know it’s my own fault, but I don’t enjoy it.
‘If there’s another opportunity there that doesn’t mean Barnsley, Leicester then I would seriously think about it. I’m listening, my phone’s always on.’

Man charged over alleged tragedy chanting at Manchester United game
Police warn members of the public not to share videos of the incident on social media and say "continued incidents of tragedy chanting by anyone will not be tolerated and will be dealt with robustly".
Sunday 28 April 2024 16:32, UK
A man has been charged with causing harassment, alarm or distress over alleged tragedy chanting during a match between Manchester United and Burnley.
Nathan Rawlinson, 44, of Bacup, Lancashire, has been charged with a Section 5 of the Public Order Act 1986 offence and bailed, Greater Manchester Police said.
It comes as the police force warned members of the public not to share videos of the incident on social media and said "continued incidents of tragedy chanting by anyone will not be tolerated and will be dealt with robustly".
The Premier League match ended in a draw on Saturday at Manchester United's Old Trafford ground.
After the game, Burnley released a statement on X, saying: "We are aware of offensive footage currently circulating on social media from the away end of today's fixture at Old Trafford.
"Tragedy-related gesturing and chanting is completely unacceptable, and Burnley Football Club take a zero-tolerance approach.
"We will continue to work with Greater Manchester Police, Lancashire Police and Manchester United to help identify and prosecute the individuals responsible."

After Saturday's incident, the Premier League vowed anyone found guilty would be punished, saying on X: "There is no place for football tragedy abuse in our game. We strongly condemn this behaviour and sanctions are in place to ensure anybody found guilty faces consequences.
"We continue to treat this as an unacceptable issue and fully support Burnley FC, Manchester United and the police in identifying and prosecuting those responsible."

Absolutely credit to the Coventry City supporters who have stayed late to celebrate their team after that. What a memorable occasion and a heroic performance.
Not sure why they are booing Harry Maguire during his on-pitch interview, mind!
Heartbreak for Coventry. United will face Manchester City in the final.
Hojlund... SCORES! United are into the FA Cup Final, just!
If Hojlund scores, it’s over.
Sheaf next up, as Onana is booked for doing his best Emi Martinez impression.
Sheaf... blazes over! Huge, huge miss.
Fernandes... slots home easily.
Fernandes is next.
Palmer... is DENIED! Superb save from Onana down to his right-hand side.
Eriksen... and SCORES! Unsaveable effort into the bottom inside netting.
Eriksen next.
Torp... top corner! Perfect pen.
Dalot with a long run up... SCORES!
Dalot next.
Wright for Coventry... SCORES!
Right, here comes Casemiro... who fires straight at Collins! SAVED!
Casemiro is still waiting.
Casemiro up first.
Fernandes has won the coin flip, it looks like United will go first.
123min: It’s off! It’s been ruled out!
Breathless, breathless stuff.
Penalties it is. United have all the pressure on them and Coventry have a free hit at this. They mustn't let that late goal being disallowed impact them.
124min: We’re going to penalties!
122min: VAR are checking. It might be offside.
121min: COVENTRY HAVE WON IT IN THE FINAL MINUTE!
THIS IS INCREDIBLE! AN HISTORIC COMEBACK!
120min: Into the final minute as Onana almost goes walkabout.
They think its all over? It is, no... Ellis Simms crashes one against the underside of the bar in this classic. United look as likely to lose as win.
A damning assessment of how far this club has fallen and how they have become even worse under Erik Ten Hag. Some United fans have left. Every single Coventry fan is willing their team on.
118min: It’s been all Coventry in the final minutes.
116min: I don’t believe it. I can’t believe it.
Simms looks to have won it for Coventry, on the turn and firing high at the goal from eight yards, but his effort hits the cross and bounces out.
115min: United on the break now through Antony, pushing Coventry back until Diallo goes to bend one but gets it all wrong.
112min: Oh, Wright fires wide with the goal gaping! A superb break, as Fernandes screams for a foul, ends with the midfield dragging a shot wide of the far post.
Was that the moment?
111min: Again Coventry come forward and again the wrong decision is made as Simms cuts inside and looks for a team-mate on the edge of the area but only finds a red shirt.
110min: Godden is released into the United half, has half the pitch to himself before United defender get back and deflect a curling effort behind.
109min: A pause in play as VAR look at a possible penalty for United for handball, but it’s a ridiculous waste of time.
108min: Corner comes in, is sent out and then Coventry clear for another.
107min: An early sighter from Maguire from a tight angle to win a corner.
Back under way
105min: Tavares has been replaced by Godden as the second half of extra time begins.
Half-time in extra time
107min: The tensions are mounting.
106min: Corner is sent in, cleared and the Forson gives away a foul while trying an overhead kick.
105min: One minute added on as Forson wins a corner.
104min: Coventry making some inroads in the United half, and Wright is found in the area, spins and shoots but sees his effort blocked. Should have spotted O’Hare in acres and screaming for the ball.
103min: Forson is on for McTominay.
101min: Sheaf tries his luck from 30 yards, but it spins wide. Lots of tiredness on show.
98min: Tavares is back on, but hobbling a bit. Neither club pushing for another goal, yet.
96min: Pause in play as Tavarez needs to be looked at.
95min: Inches away for United as Diallo tees up Fernandes for a thunderous drive which hits the bar and bounces down in front of the line.
94min: A calmer start to extra time as both sets of players re-adjust to being back on level terms.
Extra time!
91min: Right, what does this game have in store for us next?
United were cruising at 70 minutes. In full control.
Now they are clinging on.
End of 90 minutes
101min: We are heading for extra time.
100min: Hojlund is poised for a tap in but the keeper cuts out Amad’s pass from the byline.
98min: Onana races from his goal to boot a Coventry ball forward clear...
Haji Wright equalises. This is one of the most remarkable comebacks in FA Cup history. And it could become one of the most remarkable upsets.
Erik Ten Hag is on the brink, albeit from a harsh penalty call. Dreadful from United, how has this happened? They threw away leads at Brentford, Chelsea and Bournemouth and now against Coventry.
95min: Wright sends Onana the wrong way, this is INCREDIBLE!
94min: VAR approve. Wright has the ball...
PENALTY FOR COVENTRY!
93min: OH MY WORD! Wan-Bissaka handles in the area, VAR taking a look...
92min: Coventry wasting a lot of time over a throw in, getting their players in position... and then fail to get it into the box.
91min: Six minutes added on.
89min: Hojlund looks certain to spin inside the area and end the game, but he can’t get the ball out of his feet and Coventry hack clear.
88min: It’s backs against the wall for United as Coventry probe to find an unthinkable equaliser.
United could throw away this game. That's quite clear. What was supposed to be a calm procession to the final is anything but.
Andre Onana has had to save a screamer from Victor Torp. United are on the ropes and waiting for the bell to ring.
85min: Incredible save from Onana to deny Torp’s thunderous volley from the edge of the area.
84min: United clear through Dalot.
83min: A huge roar as Coventry win another corner, their fifth of the game... It comes in but the referee halts play as Coventry get another go...
79min: Now, this is game on! O’Hare’s shot takes a wild deflection off Wan-Bissaka and spins over Onana!
76min: United back to try to calm down Coventry. Last time that happened, they scored.
72min: Ten Hag replaces Mainoo with Eriksen.
71min: Maybe not! Simms gives the stadium liftoff as he sweeps home Tavares’ cross.
69min: It’s all gone very pedestrian.
66min: Antony is on for Garnacho.
64min: Triple change for Coventry as Tavares, Binks and Torp replace Latibeaudiere, Kitching and Eccles.
63min: Almost a fourth, and second for Maguire, as the defender stretches and punts a shot over the bar from inside the area.
Bruno Fernandes kills the game. He is alive to a Coventry mistake in the box and his shot is deflected in past Bradley Collins. Game, Set and Match. Credit to Rashford who forced the mistake with his drive into the box.
59min: That’s it! Fernandes gets luck with a deflection but his snapshot from inside the area makes it three.
57min: More frustrations as Sheaf gets the better of Casemiro but not Maguire when turning in the centre circle. A heavy touch from the midfielder gave Maguire the chance to hoof clear.
56min: Corner comes to nothing.
55min: Wan-Bissaka gets in a boot to divert the ball behind for the corner after a decent move from Coventry.
53min: Sheaf with a tame effort after Maguire gave away the ball.
50min: Fernandes plays it short for Rashford to shoot... and it only hits a Coventry player.
49min: Rashford does well to win a free kick very close to where Fernandes let fly.
48min: Almost a third for United as Fernandes bends one inches wide of the far corner from the angle of the area.
So close to a stunner.
46min: Back underway. No changes.
Here come the teams for the second half.
Coventry need to change something up at the break. Robins’ hope to catch United on the break simply hasn’t worked.
47min: There’s the whistle.
46min: Maguire, unmarked, heads home!
The way this first half has done, that could be that for this game.
45min: Rashford denied with a superb one-handed Collins save. Corner to come.
44min: Wright tries to find Simms with a long ball over the top, but it’s easy for Onana to run out and collect.
43min: United trying to slow down the play now as half-time approaches. Coventry trying to build momentum.
That's more like it from Coventry. A real scare for United, but it took 40 minutes to come.
40min: United calmly playing the ball around midfield, Coventry eventually put a boot in to nick the ball off them and it almost leads to an equaliser.
Eccles sends in a great ball for Simms to slide in and convert, but Dalot is on hand to divert the ball away.
Mark Robbins looks quite frustrated with his Coventry team. They must have more than this to trouble a generally out-of-sorts Manchester United. They've made Erik Ten Hag's team look good.
36min: United look in full control. Barely breaking into a stride at times.
33min: No. The free kick is sent straight into the wall after a long wait.
31min: A tough tackle from McTominay gives away a free kick on the edge of the area. Can Coventry capitalise?
The key problem Coventry can't deal with is United are making the pitch so wide with Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford.,
They're dealing with cross-field balls when they sit in and long balls over the top when they try to press. They can't live with the pace on show.
23min: There it is! McTominay opens the scoring, tucking home at the back post.
It’s a beautiful low, driven cross by Dalot that puts it on a plate for McTominay for this 10th goal of the season.
25min: Coventry need to come out now, likely making it easier for United.
21min: Garnacho doesn’t have his shooting boots on yet as he blazes another effort over from the edge of the area.

15 Best Manchester Tours
The city of Manchester is located in central England between Liverpool and the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and the North Sea and Europe to the east.
About 550,000 people live within Manchester city limits, but the surrounding suburbs are home to nearly three million residents, making it one of the United Kingdom’s most populous urban areas.
Featuring a distinct feel when compared to the capital city of London, Manchester is most well-known for its resilient and hard-working residents, raucous sports fans, and industrial economy.
It’s also a hotspot for arts, cuisine, live entertainment, and features lots of easily accessible historical and natural attractions.

Tours are customizable and may last between two and six hours, depending on the participants’ schedules and interests.

This gastronomic adventure tour allows guests to experience the city’s eateries from a street-level perspective while learning lots about the area’s history and culture along the way.

Visitors can test their skills on the ever-popular Penalty Shootout Challenge, have their photos taken with famous trophies, or just enjoy a casual stroll while recalling notable matches of yesteryear.
6. LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Entrance Ticket
During much of the fall and winter, the weather in Manchester isn’t particularly conducive to outdoor activities.
Luckily, there are plenty of indoor options available for those who’d rather not brave the elements.
LEGOLAND Discovery Center is the ultimate indoor playground; it’s actually comprised of dozens of exhilarating attractions all under one roof.
It’s all about fostering an atmosphere of activity, creativity, and engagement for young minds, and it tends to occupy little ones as few other places can.
The center is wheelchair friendly, has an on-site café, and touches on everything from space and the natural world to aviation and technology.
7. Haunted Manchester City Exploration Game and Tour
App-based game tours are fun and educational options for those who’d rather not spend their time crammed into a stuffy bus on an all-day tour.
Using their collective brainpower to solve clues and decipher riddles, guests will use their smartphones as a map and GPS guide to lead them to many of the city’s most significant attractions.
Each step brings the team closer to unlocking the tour’s hidden story, and since it’s an unguided excursion, participants can take as much or as little time as they’d like at each site.
Tours last about 90 minutes and focus on the eerie, macabre, and hair-raising.
8. Silent Disco Adventure Tour
Like dandelions and microbreweries, silent disco adventure tours are popping up all over the place.

Before returning to Manchester, guests will head to Lancaster to gaze upon its regal medieval architecture and impressive castle.
11. Self-Guided Chatsworth House Day-Trip by Train from Manchester

The views include picturesque villages and seemingly endless expanses of rolling hills. Once in town, guests will have ample time to explore many of Chatsworth House’s premier attractions.
The home was once the residence of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and features opulent living quarters, impressive art, and sprawling grounds that include breathtaking gardens and spectacular fountains.
12. Hard Rock Cafe Manchester Skip-the-Line Ticket
Lovers of hearty American fare and rock ‘n roll memorabilia need not visit two distinct locations to get their fill of both.
Hard Rock Café Manchester is located in the city center and is a popular eatery catering to locals and visitors alike.
During peak times, it can be darn near impossible to get a table, which is precisely why skip-the-line tickets are such good value for those who don’t want to miss out.
Their menu includes great food and beer from all over the world, and the restaurant is decorated in music-related paraphernalia that, for many guests, is like taking a walk down memory lane.
13. Liverpool and the Beatles Day-Trip from Manchester

Chester is most well-known for its Roman-era attractions that include remnants of the city’s original walls and a cathedral that’s nearly 1,000 years old.
Guests may also opt for a guided walking tour of the city’s center, or continue exploring on their own.
A light lunch of soup and sandwiches is also included while in Chester.

Guests will have ample time to set out on their own to explore the town’s historic attractions, after which there are additional stops at a local town known for its traditional creamery, and the Ribblehead Viaduct that’s been around since the Romans built it centuries ago.
Tours last about ten hours and begin and end in Manchester.

WREXHAM, Wales — Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are taking Wrexham back to the United States this summer.
Details were announced in an online video on Thursday, confirming two games in California and another in Vancouver, British Columbia, as part of the Welsh club’s preparations for the English third tier next season.
