The Grand Tour

Jeremy Clarkson has revealed why it’s the end of the road for The Grand Tour . Clarkson said he and co-hosts, James May and Richard Hammond, decided to quit the Amazon Prime Video show after running out of steam.

In an interview with The Times of London , Clarkson said it was becoming increasingly difficult to conjure up outlandish adventures for the show and that the presenters were all showing their age.

He added that The Grand Tour missions are “immensely physical” and had become increasingly difficult when “you’re unfit and fat and old.” “If you’re Bear Grylls you go to a hotel — there aren’t any hotels in the Sahara desert,” Clarkson said.

Clarkson, Hammond, and May confirmed last November that they had filmed their final installments of  The Grand Tour . Two final episodes of the motoring series were recorded in Mauritania and Zimbabwe and will premiere on Amazon Prime Video.

Fozia Khan, Amazon Studios’ head of unscripted in the UK, said the brand could survive with another set of presenters. “It’s come to its natural end,” she said, adding that her team was “thinking about” how the show can live on.

Clarkson will continue to host Clarkson’s Farm for Amazon after the series has become the streamer’s highest-rated UK original. Filming on Season 4 is set to begin this year. Clarkson is also hosting more Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? for ITV.

The Times interviewer Ed Potton wrote that he was told not to ask Clarkson about his reviled The Sun newspaper column about Meghan Markle. Clarkson wrote that he imagines the day Markle is paraded “naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her.” The piece was retracted and Amazon made clear its fury at the article.

Asked if he feels under pressure to be controversial, Clarkson said: “No! I like being controversial. Some people who see a still pond find that peaceful, but I cannot resist throwing a stone in it.”

A fresh start … Rob and Rylan’s Grand Tour.

Rob and Rylan’s Grand Tour review – one of them has a formidable mind, but which?

The odd couple journey through Venice, Florence and Rome in the hope of enlightenment – and mending their broken hearts in the Italian sun. Expect to have your preconceptions challenged …

I n a country where so much of society is still bisected along class lines, many have a very particular image of a clever person – and it’s roughly Stephen Fry. A grand-seeming Oxbridge-educated man with a posh accent and an interest in art and opera, who can recite passages of classic literature. Rob Rinder , the criminal barrister, broadcaster and host of Judge Rinder, fits well into this mould and loves all things “high culture” and intellectual pursuits. He is, as his co-host Rylan Clark says, “one of the cleverest blokes I know”. Meanwhile, Rinder says Clark “doesn’t know his arts from his elbow”. However, over the course of the three episodes of Rob and Rylan’s Grand Tour, Clark emerges as the brilliant mind, with levels of intelligence, wit and profundity that may have been overlooked because there remains a perception of what a clever person is like.

The pair position themselves as an odd couple from different sides of the tracks, being good mates, both going through “painful divorces” who, despite their divergent interests, have decided to embark on a journey that represents a fresh start. The series follows them through the “hedonism” of Venice, the Renaissance feast that is Florence and the baroque glory of Rome, replicating a journey made by Lord Byron, 200 years after his death at just 36. But as the series reminds us, this was not just a journey that Byron made: many of the “poshos” of the era would journey to Italy as a rite of passage, a form of cultural education to establish themselves as erudite individuals who understood art, history and the ways of the world.

We first see Rinder in Venice aboard a gondola, wanting to take in the historical traditions of the city. Clark is in a glitzy speedboat and is a little intimidated by all the art and opera ahead. But while Rinder is moved and fascinated by the galleries, concerts and archaeology of this and the other two cities, his response comes across as a little more shallow than Clark’s reflections. When discussing Caravaggio, castratos or the Colosseum, Rinder always seems to give the prototypical clever-person answer, while Clark connects to his surroundings on a molecular level, seeing in ancient ruins existential questions that connect to his own mortality and desire to achieve greatness.

Clark also brings a gorgeous vulnerability to the screen. Not only is he dealing with heartbreak, but also with the lingering insecurity of having been an object of ridicule in his early career. It’s a truly remarkable journey that he has been on, having first come to public attention as the runner-up on Signed By Katie Price before being labelled a “joke act” on The X Factor and finally hitting his stride as a presenter on This Morning, Big Brother’s Bit on the Side and Ready Steady Cook. But even if he is best known for being a larger-than-life camp icon who pokes fun at himself, it has become clear over the years – and is further illuminated by this programme – that Clark is an extremely smart and talented man who should not be underestimated.

The relationship between Rinder and Clark proves surprisingly sweet and tender, too. Although they often fall back into the clever one/silly one shtick, they seem to hold each other in equally high regard. Clark has little ego around the gaps in his knowledge and soaks up what Rinder tells him about the historical significance of the places that they visit. Rinder also gazes at him adoringly when Clark interprets what the Botticellis hanging in the Uffizi or the Venetian mask worn during the carnival symbolise to him.

While Rinder and Clark seem quite transformed by their journey and time together, ending the trip with their hearts a little less broken and open to the possibility of finding love again (albeit with an iron-clad prenup), what’s most interesting about the programme is how it challenges our perception of Clark. For centuries, the Grand Tour was undertaken by those who more closely resembled Rinder, people with the right sort of class and education, unlike Clark, who was a “ginger kid from a council flat in Stepney Green”. But it is lovely to behold where that kid has ended up, see his formidable mind absorb the glories of the journey Byron once embarked on and watch his confidence bloom in the Italian sunshine.

The Grand Tour Episode 3 Review: A Return to the Classics

The naysayers and doubters who rose up following The Grand Tour’s somewhat shaky Episode 2 have now been silenced all at once by the majesty that was Episode 3. From start to finish this week’s episode of The Grand Tour was everything we love about Jeremy Clarkson , Richard Hammond & James May . This one, folks, will go down as a classic.

Episode 3 of The Grand Tour features the boys on a title adventure, a grand tour, through the European countryside with a series of beautiful stops along the way. Cars featured in the episode included an Aston Martin DB11, a Rolls Royce Dawn, and a Dodge Hellcat.

The episode also featured classic Top Gear-esque pranks, speed boats, race tracks, and Jeremy’s house being blown to smithereens! I fail to see how they could have done much better.

1

The show begins with the boys each selecting their aforementioned grand touring cars for the coming trip. James being the refined one of the group is driving the Rolls Royce. Jeremy chooses the Aston, an artful balance of power and style. Hammond being Hammond, chooses the delightfully tacky but, oh so powerful American Dodge Challenger Hellcat.

The three hosts exchange the classic jabs at one another we’ve come to know and love during their time on Top Gear hitting us right in the nostalgia. The trio sets off on their Italian Grand Tour from the scenic city of Siena to the timeless location of Florence and ending in the City of Water, Venice.

Along the way we get to see more of the trio doing what they love, and what we love watching, which includes May developing a twitch, Jeremy being pompous, and Hammond acting like an idiot. The three tourers head to the beautiful racetrack known as Mugello Circuit in Tuscany, Italy. While there the classy James May take an absence to practice his watercolors while Clarkson and Hammond duke it out on the circuit to see who’s car is the fastest ’round.

2

At this point, we come to the midpoint of the show where we are treated once again to the running segment Conversation Street. The segment which obviously is a replacement for the news segment on Top Gear has received mixed reviews up to this point and I don’t expect that to change anytime this season.

The trio discusses driving trends in the U.K.,local politics, precious gems, and of course cars. Jeremy also shows up Google in a surprise unveiling of his newest invention, a self driving car, so be sure and keep and eye out for it, or is poke your eyes out when you see it? You can be the judge of that. All around it’s an enjoyable segment with some good laughs, especially for those who appreciate a bit of British humor.

After wrapping up in the studio, we start back up on the grand tour following a narrow victory (you’ll have to watch to see who’s) at the track. Clarkson, Hammond, and May leave the circuit along with several of Hammond’s tires and travel to the Vicenza main square where Clarkson & May attempt to ditch Hammond with a cleverly thought out social media post.

Leaving their friend behind the hosts head to their final destination of Venice, Italy. Unfortunately for them, they aren’t the only host who makes it to this point and they get a bit wet finding out the hard way.

3

After finishing their grand tour the boys are back in the studio and we are once again graced with the Celebrity Brain Crash segment. I for one am a fan of this segment, but it seems audiences are split on it at the moment, and I don’t know if I can confidently say we will see it continue on into another season. This episode’s celebrity guest is Simon Pegg who meets with a bit of bad luck as is the usual for the show’s guests. Let’s just say his unfortunate end involves ice cream, seagulls, a bridge, and well, you’ll see soon enough if you haven’t already.

Episode 3 really ends with a bang. No seriously, a huge bang. There’s a massive explosion and it’s set off by none other than Mr. Boring, Captain Slow, James May! You may remember a certain bet from Episode 1 that an overconfident Jeremy Clarkson made with Richard Hammond and James May and in Episode 3 the terms of the bet come to fruition in this delightful show of fire. It’s the perfect way to end a perfect episode of The Grand Tour. I think it may have left the BBC shaking as they prepare the next season of Top Gear.

4

And on that terrible disappointment…

Yes – but he was having it demolished anyway to build a new house…

Proof, if needed that less is more. Apart from the opening segment of episode 1, this was the best TGT by miles. All you need are three idiots, three amazing cars and an amazing backdrop. Just hope that they drop the celebrity brain crash. That joke was good once but three times?

Best show on earth. No one moaning about the doughnuts in Italy then lol.

‘Clarkson's Farm' Executive Producer Andy Wilman: Ratings Success Has Been Unexpected, But We May Walk Away After Season 4

EXCLUSIVE : Andy Wilman looks like a man who's not seen sunlight for a while. Peering down the barrel of a Zoom call, he's got a touch of man flu after a spell in his editing bunker. Wilman is perpetually "in an edit." He's currently honing the final episode of The Grand Tour , but he could just as well be looking at rushes from Clarkson's Farm Season 4. It is his happy place.

We talk just days after Season 3 has been confirmed as Amazon Prime Video's highest-rated UK original , sitting acres ahead of lavishly-budgeted series including Fallout and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power . Not bad for a show in which the centerpiece storyline is the birthing journey of a pig named Baroness. Clarkson's Farm was, in Wilman's words, conceived as Clarkson's "solo album" away from Richard Hammond and James May, but it would not be unreasonable to suggest that it has become bigger than the band.

Each of the first three seasons has chronicled a year on Diddly Squat, Clarkson's 1,000-acre farm nestled in the ancient stone villages of the Cotswolds. Once better known as a member of the Chipping Norton set (a wealthy Cotswolds clique that includes ex-prime minister David Cameron), the presenter is now more synonymous with drilling grain into fields in his Lamborghini tractor. The transformation was not inevitable. Wilman admits to having serious jitters during the making of Season 1 in 2019. Could Clarkson cope without his co-hosts? Would he be a fish out of water but without the comedy?

"I don’t think we saw the real magic until the sheep arrived," Wilman says, reflecting on the anarchic arrival of drone-herded mutton in Season 1. "And obviously Kaleb [Cooper] bollocking Jeremy. Those are the moments where you go: alright, we've really got something here."

Kaleb, for those who don't know, is Clarkson's skilled assistant. He is one of a cast of characters that fell into Wilman's lap during filming and have become as much a part of the show's success as Clarkson himself. There's Charlie Ireland, the fastidious Diddly Squat land manager; Gerald Cooper, the incomprehensible farm handyman; and Lisa Hogan, Clarkson's girlfriend of seven years. Hogan has emerged as a hero for farmers' wives in Britain, with one voicing a BBC Radio 4 ode to Lisa on the morning of Wilman's interview. She mucks in, runs the farm shop, and takes no s*** from Clarkson, which Wilman thinks female viewers are particularly thankful for.

This community is what grounds Clarkson's Farm and gives it that most precious of TV commodities: authenticity. "Everybody wants to be in that little world because it’s a bit of a 1950s world where a big problem is a cow that’s in trouble, or a dam that’s not mended. Very little of consequence happens," Wilman says. "It's like an escape pod. Forget all your troubles and be on Clarkson's Farm ."

Season 2's story arc follows Clarkson's fight against local planning authorities as he seeks to build a Diddly Squat restaurant. Season 3's throughline was not so obvious, but Clarkson came up with the idea of splitting the farm with Cooper and competing to see who can make the most money from the land. It's a wheeze straight out of his Top Gear days, but Wiman says the idea is also a testament to Clarkson's eye for "journalistic detail," keeping viewers informed and giving them an insight into the brutal economics of farming. Clarkson may be wealthier than his counterparts - a fact Clarkson's Farm often addresses head-on - but that does not mean he is any less invested in the farm's success.

"He’s a restless man, he needs work, he needs things to do. And he loves that farm, he’s really at peace in that place," Wilman says of his friend. Farm's success on Amazon has been a happy by-product: "He never saw this coming in his career [at the age of] 64. He thought his big end moment was that we end The Grand Tour successfully."

Season 4 is currently shooting and Wilman, despite being a confessed "glass half empty" guy, seems comfortable with the progress. He is uncertain whether there will be a Season 5 - and not necessarily because they are at the mercy of Amazon's green light. "I’ve got no feelings on whether there’s a five or not," Wilman says. "Jeremy's the same. He's like: when we've got nothing left to say, let’s walk away."

This perspective was not a luxury they enjoyed last year. Amazon was incandescent about Clarkson's Meghan Markle column in The Sun newspaper and Variety reported that the streamer was prepared to cancel the presenter. Sources say the report caught Wilman and colleagues off guard as they were filming Season 3, but it proved to be wide of the mark. Amazon did eventually renew Clarkson's Farm , but only after some spicy comments at the Edinburgh TV Festival, where executives claimed the show was bigger than the presenter. Wilman does not entirely disagree. "To me, he's like the tent pole, it would all collapse without him, but he does need a foil," he says.

Ultimately, few content chiefs would cancel a series on the up. Clarkson's Farm was watched by 5.2M on its return, making it the second biggest show on a streaming service in the UK this year. Does Wilman think it could persuade Jeff Bezos to join the Chipping Norton set? "I think we'd have to show him where it is," he smiles. "I hope he watches it because he must be going: ‘Bloody hell. This show doesn’t cost me a lot and gets these numbers.'"

There has been talk of Amazon licensing old episodes of Clarkson's Farm to a British broadcaster and it is not hard to imagine the show finding a home in ITV's primetime schedule, for example. It is, in many ways, heartland public service broadcasting. Unsurprisingly, Wiman is supportive of a second window sale: "I wouldn’t have a problem with it. It's made the noise, so I just want as many people as possible to watch it. What is Amazon’s business model about keeping it to themselves or pumping out an earlier series to get more people to watch the later ones? That’s up to them. We're just here at the f*****g coalface making the next thing."

And with that, Wilman disappears back to his edit suite.

NAPLES, Italy (AP) — Dutch cyclist Olav Kooij won a bunch sprint for a stage victory on his grand tour debut while Tadej Pogacar maintained his considerable lead after the ninth stage of the Giro d’Italia on Sunday.

Kooij, who rides for Visma-Lease a Bike, edged Jonathan Milan by half a wheel at the end of the 214-kilometer (133-mile) route from Avezzano to Napoli – the second longest day of this Giro. Juan Sebastian Molano was third.

It was a 33rd professional win for the 22-year-old Kooij.

“I was really looking forward to my first grand tour,” Kooij said, adding that despite his previous wins “this one is really one I was dreaming of.”

Jhonatan Narvaez had seemed set for victory after making his move with 7.7 kilometers remaining and he had a gap of 12 seconds heading into the final kilometer.

But, with Pogacar leading a charging peloton for his own fast man Molano, Narvaez was caught just 50 meters from the line.

Milan launched his sprint but he was edged at the line by Kooij.

It had been expected to be a day for the breakaway but only two riders went clear right at the start. Polti–Kometa teammates Mirco Maestri and Andrea Pietrobon had a long and lonely day up front before they were caught with 24 kilometers remaining.

Pogacar remained 2 minutes, 40 seconds ahead of Daniel Martinez overall. Last year’s runner-up Geraint Thomas was 2:58 behind.

“It’s a comfortable gap to go to the rest day, I’m really looking forward for (an) easy day tomorrow,” Pogacar said. “Just relax and try to not think about the race for one day, but it is going to be hard.”

Monday sees the race’s first rest day before a short but difficult leg. Tuesday’s 10th stage starts in Pompei and is just 142 kilometers (88 miles) but features a second-category climb in the middle before the top-classified climb to the finish at Cusano Mutri.

“It’s good to be for rest day in Napoli and let’s hope for some good pizza and good cappuccino,” Pogacar said.

The Giro ends in Rome on May 26.
