6 great cruises that will take you to the Maldives

Gene Sloan

Located in the Indian Ocean, about 600 miles south of India , the Maldives is known for stunning white-sand beaches, impossibly clear blue waters and dozens of over-the-top luxury resorts.

If you're thinking about a Maldives trip , you'll want to look closely at these resorts, some of which promise pampering and privacy of a sort found in few other destinations on Earth. Many of them, including the recently reviewed JW Marriott Maldives Resort and Spa and the W Maldives , feature overwater bungalows -- a signature feature of high-end properties here. They often are set on their very own private islands, only reachable by seaplane or boat. Exclusivity is the watch word.

But there is another, lesser-known way to visit to the Maldives that you might want to at least consider: A cruise.

The Maldives is definitely not a major destination for cruise ships. Only a handful of vessels visit the archipelago each year. But those that do often arrive as part of unusual, long-distance itineraries that will let you visit not just the Maldives but other destinations in the region such as the Seychelles and Sri Lanka in a single trip -- all while only having to pack and unpack once.

Cruise lines that sail to the Maldives

The lines operating cruises to the Maldives vary every year. Holland America, Oceania Cruises, Ponant and Costa Cruises are among the operators that send ships to the destination most often. Seabourn Cruise Line, Crystal Cruises, Princess Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line also have sent vessels to the Maldives recently, or have at least one ship scheduled to visit in 2020 or 2021.

In some cases, the vessels are just passing through the region while in the midst of epic, around-the-world voyages. Holland America's 1,380-passenger Amsterdam, for instance, will visit the Maldives in April as part of a 128-day, globe-circling sailing out of Fort Lauderdale , Florida, that began in January. The voyage also includes ports in South America , Australia and Africa .

Other vessels stopping in the Maldives are on Indian Ocean-focused itineraries. One example is a seven-night Costa Cruises voyage beginning in Male, the capital of the Maldives, on Feb. 22 that includes two days in the Maldives, a day in Sri Lanka, and three days in India.

The line that traditionally has offered the most in-depth voyages around the Maldives is Ponant, a France-based company that specializes in upscale, small-ship voyages to exotic locales. It sometimes runs trips that are almost completely centered on the Maldives and include visits to half a dozen of the archipelago's 26 atolls.

The pros and cons of a cruise to the Maldives

If it's a classic Maldives experience you crave -- days spent relaxing on pristine beaches, swimming, snorkeling, diving and splurging on spa treatments -- a cruise is generally not the best choice. You'll want to fly to the Maldives and spend extended time at one or more of its many island resorts instead.

In most cases, cruises that touch the Maldives only include a brief stay at the island nation -- and we mean brief! Many ships that stop in the Maldives as part of broader Indian Ocean sailings only do so for a single day. Others will stay for two days, which isn't much better if your goal is to get a true sense of the archipelago's spectacular beaches, coral reefs, diving spots and other allures. Much more rare are cruises that feature up to a week in the destination.

White-sand beaches, crystal-clear water and luxury resorts with overwater bungalows such as the Four Seasons Resort Maldives Laadaa Giraavaru, shown here, are top allures of the Maldives. (Photo courtesy of Four Seasons).

In general, cruises that include the Maldives are best for travelers who just want a quick sampler of the destination and other hot spots around the Indian Ocean such as the Seychelles and Goa, India , in one easy-to-book, easy-to-manage trip. On a cruise, you sometimes can visit three, four or even five places in the region in just a week or two, with someone else figuring out all the logistics.

The downside, of course, is that you'll get very little time in any one place.

For the coming year, the only major cruise line that has voyages with extended time in the Maldives on its schedule is Ponant. Featuring visits to half a dozen destinations around the archipelago, the line's Essential Maldives trips offer vacationers the chance to see more of the destination in a week than would be possible staying at a land resort.

Another more in-depth "cruise" around the Maldives is a multiday trip on one of several liveaboard diving boats that call the Maldives home.

Here, we take a closer look at the best cruises and cruise-like itineraries to the destination:

The "Essential Maldives" with Ponant

By far the most interesting Maldives itinerary currently on the market is the eight-night Essential Maldives routing offered by Ponant. Nearly every day of the itinerary brings a stop at a different Maldivian atoll -- six in all -- for snorkeling, scuba diving, beach-going, wildlife watching and other pursuits. The routing thus offers a broader exploration of the Maldives than you can get from staying at any one land resort or even several resorts.

The itinerary includes a day at Baa Atoll, one of the archipelago's wildest corners. Listed as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Baa is known for its globally significant biodiversity including stony and soft corals, reef fish, marine turtles, manta rays and whale sharks.

There's also a day scheduled for Rasdhoo Atoll, a hot spot for scuba diving and snorkeling where passengers can see hammerhead sharks as well as rays and turtles. The four other atolls on the itinerary are Noonu, Ari, Mulaku and Male.

France-based cruise line Ponant offers voyages around the Maldives on an intimate, 184-passenger vessel. (Photo courtesy of Ponant).

Ponant typically operates just a couple departures of the itinerary each year on one of its small, yacht-like Explorer Class ships. Holding just 184 passengers, the vessels are designed for off-the-beaten-path "expedition" cruising. They have Zodiac boats on board for landings and an aft marina for water sports. They famously have an underwater lounge called the Blue Eye.

Ponant currently has just two departures of this Maldivian itinerary open for booking, starting on Jan. 25, 2021, and Feb. 2, 2021, respectively. The voyages are one-way between Colombo, Sri Lanka, and Male in the Maldives. Fares start at $4,410 per person, not including $900 in port taxes. For more information, call 888-400-1082 or visit us.ponant.com .

A short visit to the Maldives with Oceania Cruises

Ships operated by upscale line Oceania Cruises typically stop in the Maldives two or three times a a year as they move between Europe, Africa and Asia.

Usually, these Oceania vessels only will stay in the Maldives for two days — typically in the capital, Male — as they make their way across the Indian Ocean. As a result, passengers on the sailings only get a tiny taste of the destination.

On the flipside, these cruises offer a chance to see not just a slice of the Maldives but also multiple places around the Indian Ocean in one relatively quick and easy trip.

Oceania's 684-passenger Nautica, for instance, will visit Male for two days in February 2021 as part of a 30-day voyage from Cape Town, South Africa, to Singapore. In addition to four stops in South Africa and a visit to Mozambique, the sailing will include calls at such Indian Ocean draws as Reunion Island, Mauritius and the Seychelles (for two days). Stops in Sri Lanka, Thailand and Malaysia round out the voyage.

Fares for the Nautica trip start at $8,299 per person, including government fees and taxes. For more information, call 855-335-2609 or visit oceaniacruises.com .

A quick trip to the Maldives with Holland America

One of the more unusual Indian Ocean voyages on the schedule for the coming year is a 20-day Holland America sailing out of Singapore.

The round-trip itinerary pairs four stops in Malaysia and a single day in Phuket, Thailand, with a multiday visit to Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

As is the case with the Oceania sailing mentioned above, the Holland America voyage only includes two days in the Maldives. But there's a twist to the visit: In addition to a day stop in the capital of Male, the stopover includes a day in Utheemu, also known as Haa Alif Atoll. The latter is rarely visited by cruise ships.

The voyage will take place on Holland America's 1,258-passenger Maasdam. It kicks off Jan. 24, 2021.

Fares start at $2,999 per person, not including up to $210 in taxes and fees. For more information, call 855-932-1711 or visit hollandamerica.com .

A diving cruise on a floating Four Seasons

If you're a diving enthusiast, one of the top ways to cruise around the Maldives is a trip on the private Maldives diving yacht operated by Four Seasons . (Yes, that Four Seasons.)

Dubbed Four Seasons Explorer, the 11-cabin catamaran sails three- and four-night trips between two Four Seasons resorts in the Maldives: The Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa and the Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru. Customers also can string together the two itineraries to create a seven-night loop.

Featuring stops in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the trips are aimed specifically at divers, with opportunities for three dives per day, plus occasional night and sunrise dives.

The 22-passenger Four Seasons Explorer operates diving cruises around the Maldives.

Four Season Explorer is billed as the fastest and most luxurious dive vessel in the Maldives. Capable of carrying up to 22 passengers, it has its own PADI Five Star diving center, comfortable cabins with en suite bathrooms, a main dining room and plush open-plan lounges. In addition to diving during sailings, passengers can sign up for spa treatments on uninhabited isles and take part in island barbecues, stargazing, sunset fishing and water sports.

Four Seasons Explorer cruises can be combined with a stay at one of the Four Seasons resorts in the Maldives to create an extended Maldivian vacation. Note that the spa at the Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru just made our list of the seven best spas in the Maldives .

Fares start at $2,550 per person for a three-night cruise, not including a 12% goods and services tax and 10% service charge. For more information, call 800-819-5053 or visit fourseasons.com .

A cruise from the US to the Maldives

Yes, you can get all the way to the Maldives and back from the United States by ship. There are just two big caveats: First, you need to block out more than 100 days for the trip. Second, the opportunity doesn't come up very often -- usually just once every year or two.

The opportunity arises when a cruise line unveils an around-the-world voyage beginning and ending in the U.S. that includes a visit to the Maldives.

As of the publishing of this story, there are just two such voyages open for bookings:

  • Oceania Cruises plans a 196-day around-the-world sailing from Miami departing on Dec. 21, 2021 that includes a one-day call in the Maldives. The trip, on the 684-passenger Insignia, ends July 5, 2022 in New York. Fares start at $42,199 per person.
  • Crystal Cruises has scheduled a 116-day around-the-world voyage from Miami departing on Jan. 17, 2022 that also includes a one-day call in the Maldives. The trip, on the 980-passenger Crystal Serenity, ends in Miami on May 13, 2022. Fares start at $37,097 per person.

Smaller segments of both trips also are available for booking.

The 980-passenger Crystal Serenity will visit the Maldives in 2022 as part of an around-the-world voyage from Miami. (Photo courtesy of Crystal Cruises)

Nobody goes on these around-the-world voyages just to see the Maldives, of course. The typical around-the-world cruise includes stops at dozens of countries on multiple continents. But, if you're looking to add the Maldives to your country count while visiting an array of other nations, too, all while never boarding a long-haul flight, these two sailings are the cruises for you.

Small Ship Cruises in Maldives

The Maldives have something for everyone. The beautiful waters are perfect to explore with a snorkel and there's no better way than by boat when in these stunning islands.

Gliding over turquoise waters on a cruise around the Maldives is the best way to view its numerous islands, visit different diving sites and get around the picturesque island nation. The perfect way to explore the archipelago and spend time on some of the best Maldives beaches in one holiday. There are 26 atolls (groups of islands) in the archipelago comprising more than 1200 islands/ islets composed of sand bars and coral reefs. Secluded lagoons, crystal-clear water, vibrant reefs, and magnificent marine animals have made the Maldives a tourist’s heaven. Primarily a scuba diving hotspot, the beaches of Maldives are popular with everyone from celebrities who sail in their private yachts to backpacker travelers that enjoy a more rustic and culturally enriching experience.

The country's geographical location allows prevailing currents to supply the island waters with rich nutrition from the ocean's depth, making for bountiful fishing and larger animal spotting. These stunning islands have the highest point of 6 meters above sea level and are at the mercy of the sea, hence best explored by boat. Relaxing, themed holidays sailing aboard traditional Maldivian dhonis or intimate journeys aboard small Maldivian cruises while soaking in the tropical sun and sipping fresh fruit juice are some of the best ways to de-stress.

Swim around charismatic manta rays and the seasonal whale sharks, visit local islands, partake in different water sports, enjoy delicious seafood and local cuisine or go on a hike. These are just some of the activities guests can experience while cruising around the Maldives.

Some of the places to visit

With 26 atolls and islands so abundant that it would take years to enjoy what they offer, the island nation of Maldives is a thalassophilic’s sweetest dream. The beauty lies under the sea for the smaller uninhabited islands, while some of the inhabited islands are rich in tradition and culture on land. This country's welcoming and smiling people are friendly and ready to share their oceanic lifestyle.

Declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Baa Atoll is the best location in the world to dive with manta rays and whale sharks. This Maldivian atoll is known for the rare biodiversity in its coral reefs and marine life. Baa atoll is a unique formation with the world-famous Hanifaru Bay, a protected marine area that hosts manta rays in huge numbers during the season. Snorkelers can witness barrel-rolling chains of mantas and gulping whale sharks, all feeding on the plankton concentrated in the narrow bay.

Vaavu Atoll

This administrative division of the Maldives consists of Felidhu Atoll and the Vattaru Reef. Located over 60 km from the capital Malé, it is accessible by small boat cruises and speedboats. Fishing, scuba diving, and snorkeling are popular activities at Vaavu Atoll . The Felidhu atoll includes the islands of Bodu Mora with its idyllic beaches and Felidhu’s watersports hub. Diving schools on the islands offer diving courses if you want to make the most of the magical marine life found in abundance on the reefs here.

South Malé Atoll

South Malé Atoll is a 35km long oblong shaped atoll formation comprising 22 islands and is separated from the North Malé Atoll by a very deep channel called Vaadhu Kandu. It is drastically different from its more mainstream cousin in the north as these islands are more peaceful and serene. There are many activities to partake in, like scuba diving, snorkeling, catamaran cruises, dolphin and whale watching, and island hopping. The interior of the atoll is myriad shallow coral reefs, sandbars, and lagoons that make for perfect romantic picnic spots and the best sunset views.

Meemu Atoll

Also known as Mulak Atoll of Mulakatolhu, Meemu Atoll is an administrative district of the Maldives of significant historical importance. There is a mosque on Kolhufushi island, but no Buddhist remains were ever food. The flag-bearing Maldivian battleship Kalhu Oh Fummi’s wreck from 1570’s Maldives uprising against the Portuguese is located on the southeastern reef of Kolhuvaariyaafushi island. The islands of this atoll were greatly affected by the tsunami of 2004, with some islands having entire civilizations washed away, albeit there was no loss of life.

Best time to Visit

The Maldives enjoys a tropical climate comprising dry and wet seasons. The dry season is the best time to enjoy a cruise holiday as the humidity is relatively lower, with hardly any rain. November to April is ideally a good time for traveling to the Maldives. The weather remains clear for shore excursions and smooth sailing, which makes cruising through the Maldives during these months a fantastic experience.

How to get to the Maldives

The Maldives houses 12 airports, out of which 4 are international. The Male International Airport, also known as Velana International Airport at Hulhule Island, is the most famous of the four. The second most popular is the Gan International Airport at Seenu Atoll, followed by Hanimaadhoo International Airport in Haa Dhaalu Atoll and Maafaru International Airport, Noonu Atoll.

Male International Airport is the main hub that connects the Maldives to all major countries in South-East Asia, including India, China, and Sri Lanka. There are also direct flights to this airport from Dubai and chartered flights from Europe, China, and Singapore.

During the peak season, which is from October through March, British Airways offers direct flights thrice a week. If you’re traveling through the Middle East, then Etihad, Emirates, Oman Air, and Qatar Airways offer indirect flights into Malé from London Heathrow.

Maldives Trip Tips

  • Official passports, hotel booking receipts, and return tickets are the mandatory documents required at the visa desk. So keep these within reach.
  • Passports of travelers must have at least 6 months of remaining validity. The Male international airport grants a visa-on-arrival which saves travelers the ordeal of pre-applying for visas.
  • Keep loose change handy in Maldivian Rufiyaa. Some taxi drivers accept USD payments but may not render exact change.
  • If you’re taking kids along, be sure to check with the resorts or tour operators whether kids are allowed there. Some honeymoon resorts only allow kids if they’re ten years of age or above.
  • Make sure to arrive at Male before 9:30 a.m. if you have connecting transport to other islands.
  • Keep your eyes peeled for competitive prices on flights and resorts. If you’re good at bargaining, cracking deals with resorts could work in your favor.
  • Be sure to watch the bioluminescent sea waves at night! Check with the cruise captain whether this can be viewed on the route taken during the holiday.
  • Avoid carrying alcohol while in the country.

Plan ahead, and arrive early.

Booking flight tickets prior, especially during the off-season, gives travelers the freedom to tailor their trip within a decent budget. Substantial cost-cutting from flight fares to accommodation charges, getting documentation work in place, and saving up more are some advantages of planning well in advance.

The Maldives is home to people who are friendly and supportive of tourism. However, travelers must avoid carrying pork, alcohol, or any other banned products. More information on this is available on the Internet.

Guests should clearly understand the adventurous activities they would like to try. This can help in efficient packing and costing strategies during the planning stage.

By arriving early, travelers can indulge in some street shopping, scrumptious Maldivian cuisine, little strolls amidst scenic island views, and much more. Reaching well before the actual check-in time lets travelers explore the outside of the islands and the streetside of Maldives. Sprawling greenery, pristine beaches, and a vibrant culture await your arrival in the Maldives.

What to pack

Since the trip is a cruise, it’s important to have high-SPF sunscreen, beach hats and cover-ups, flip-flops or water shoes, sunglasses, and swimwear. A reusable water bottle goes a long way in being a responsible traveler. Flashlight, camera, extra batteries, and memory cards; for drones, please enquire first. Personal first aid kit with necessary personal medication with prescription. Preferably biodegradable toiletries are some key items travelers should include while packing for this trip.

Snorkeling and fishing equipment

Although snorkeling equipment is provided onboard, it is best to carry along personal equipment since it would be the best fit for yourself during all the in-water adventures. Fishing equipment is carried aboard the cruises, and the staff is kind enough to give guests pointers on the best fishing methods. Catch a fish for supper or go for a catch and release.

Travel Advice

Some important personal documents include flight information, insurance information, a passport with minimum 6 months validity remaining, vaccination certificates, an external battery pack and a plug point converter, vouchers, and pre-departure information for cruises are a must-carry.

Maldives Cruise: Indian Ocean Dhoni Life

Really enjoyed it! Good boat, good food, great snorkelling and also the CEO helped me so I could do a dive instead of snorkelling one of the days which I really appreciate. Could skip the beach clean up, not that its not needed but after collecting several of bags with trash the bags where just left on the island. Just left us all with a bad feeling, first of all seeing all the trash and then collecting as much as we could, was so much left though, just to leave it on the island in the end 🤷‍♀️. BUT the tour was great!

Maldives Dhoni Cruise

The stunningly beautiful Maldives really can be affordable for anyone. A week spent on a traditional Dhoni, snorkeling on 2 reefs each day, sunbathing on the deck, relaxing - pure bliss. The water is turquoise and crystal clear. The sea life is abundant, we saw reef sharks, sea turtles, sea cucumbers and many wonderful colorful species of fish. We visited islands along the way where we got to meet and mingle with the locals. One of the best parts of the trip was that we were so far from the resorts that we had the reefs completely to ourselves. A really amazing trip!

Maldives Dhoni Cruise Tour

It was definitely the most relaxing week in my life! Cruised through some of the world's most beautiful islands, uncovered isolated beaches, explored small fishing villages, met lovely local people and listened to their traditional music, snorkeled the vibrant coral reefs of the Indian Ocean spotting turtles, manta rays, reef sharks and millions of colorful fish, enjoyed great fresh food made by our private chef on board and slept a lot...White sands, blue skies and crystal-clear waters every day, all day - this is what I call tropical paradise!! Sailing Maldives...anytime again!

Zaff was an amazing tour leader. He promised us the best snorkel experience ever and he definitely kept his promise. We couldn’t do certain activities because of covid but Zaff was able to find even better solutions. We could always count on his and boat crew’s help and they were quick to solve any of our issues. The boat crew was super nice and they assured that we have an incredible time. I will certainly recommend this trip to any of my friends.

Maldives Dhoni Cruise

7 days, malé to malé.

the maldives boat tour

Please note the “Snorkelling in the Maldives" included excursion begins around 10:30am, therefore we strongly suggest travellers arrive by 10:00am in order to have enough time to transfer to the boat for this activity. Any flight arriving after 10:00am would result in missing this included excursion. BUT do not fear, there are plenty of snorkelling opportunities throughout the trip. Just be sure you arrive by 2:00pm, so you don't miss the last transfer to the boat.

Itineraries on some departure dates may differ, please select the itinerary that you wish to explore.

Our adventure begins in Male at the hotel where we spend the night. The circumference of the island is little more than 5 kilometres so it's very easy to explore on foot, and is a hive of activity, in stark contrast to the laid-back islands of the archipelago that we will be exploring in the coming days.

If you would like to receive a complimentary airport transfer today, you'll need to arrive into Male International Airport (MLE). For those arriving on time our representative will meet you in the hotel reception at 4pm for the initial tour briefing and to take us on an orientation walking tour of the town, taking in the Mosque, to the fish market and strolling along the water's edge to watch the ferries coming and going.

Please note that if you wish to join the orientation tour today, you must arrive at the hotel by 4pm. If you are booking your own flights, we recommend giving yourself at least one hour to clear the airport and the short transfer to the hotel. Therefore the latest your flight can arrive is 3pm. Should you miss the meeting, our rep will leave you information giving the meeting time for the next day in the hotel reception and will inform you of any essential information as soon as you catch up.

This morning we walk to the waterfront to meet our moored dhoni and crew. We take our breakfast on the boat and then begin cruising south for two to three hours, passing through the Vaadhoo Canal to the South Male Atoll - a smaller and quieter neighbour to the more developed North Male Atoll. Here, many of the islands are inhabited simply by vegetation and white sand, surrounded by clear turquoise water and reef. Heading further south we cruise to the Vavuu Atoll, where we spend time exploring the uninhabited and picturesque islands of Kudiboli and Kuda Anbaraa. When exploring this and other islands in the itinerary, it isn't necessary to bring special footwear. Most customers seem to manage well in flip-flops, and these have the obvious advantage of being quick to get on and off - ideal for walking through sand. Our afternoon is spent snorkelling or relaxing on board. Over the course of the week, underwater fauna we are likely to see include green turtles, reef sharks and gigantic manta rays, as well as smaller sting rays and eagle rays. At each stop, we will also swim among a rainbow of small, colourful fish, including the famous Clown Fish. Our knowledgeable local guides will be able to help identify many of the underwater species that we come across.

Today, and each day, afternoon tea with freshly baked cake will be served by our talented chef.

Every meal is included on the dhoni . Menus are likely to include freshly-caught fish each day, as well curries and pasta. Drinking water, tea and coffee are readily available, with alcoholic and soft drinks available for purchase on-board. You can pay your bill for drinks at the end of your cruise in US dollars or by Credit Card.

Our cabins are compact, but with plenty of room for two people and luggage. However, many customers choose to enjoy the tranquillity of sleeping under the stars on deck for at least some of the nights.

Today we sail south for a further two to three hours, crossing to Meemu Atoll - home to one of the longest stretches of reef in the Maldives. On this or other crossings, we may be lucky enough to be chased by spinner dolphins, sometimes swimming and jumping alongside the boat. As well as this on some occasions we will spot flying fish close to the dhoni. Meemu Atoll is made up of 34 islands, of which 25 are uninhabited. Some of the inhabited ones grow yams, and all of them are largely dependent on fishing. Here more than anywhere, we are likely to experience the true Maldivian way of life. Shortly after entering the atoll, we arrive at Fenboa Finolhu - another beautiful uninhabited island where we aim to base ourselves for the night. We will have plenty of time to enjoy the white-sand beach and to snorkel on the reef. This evening, we can look forward to a barbeque beach banquet in an idyllic spot on the island, laid on by the dhoni crew.

After a relaxed start, we head east to the inhabited island of Dhiggaru. Here, we drop our anchor by a particularly good snorkelling reef. Later in the afternoon, when it has cooled down a bit, we plan to go ashore to meet the island's inhabitants. We may be struck by the traditional, yet relaxed, way of life in the island's lively village. Very few tourist groups visit and we must remember to dress and act respectfully, removing our shoes when visiting a house or a mosque.

Today, we head back to Felidhoo Atoll and its administrative centre, Felidhoo. With a population of about 400, this is the least populated of all the country's administrative centres. Again, we take time to visit the village and have the opportunity to enjoy a Bodu Beru performance in the evening, the traditional folk music of the country.

By now, we are likely to be feeling completely relaxed, as our routine of reading, sunbathing and napping between island stops and snorkelling spots has become second nature. With a subtly different name to our previous day's stop-off, we break today's journey with a visit to Fulidhoo Island. Once again, we meet the locals and gain more of an appreciation of their life in this tropical paradise. After a further visit to the island of Hulhidhoo, we anchor by a large reef, where we can spend time snorkelling.

Our last day on the boat sees us cruising back towards Male. We take the opportunity for some final snorkelling and swimming, before enjoying a farewell meal with our boat crew.

The trip ends after breakfast on our dhoni in Male.

There are no activities planned today, so you are free to depart from Male at any time. If your flight is departing later in the day, luggage storage facilities are available at the airport for a cost of $6 per item. If you would like an airport transfer today, you need to depart from Male International Airport (MLE).

Trip information

Day time temperatures are remarkably consistent throughout the year ranging from 30°C to 32°C dropping to between 25°C and 26°C at night. Although rain is heaviest in June, July and August, heavy rain can fall at any time of year - even in February and March when statistically only 50mm usually falls during those months combined. The south-west monsoon lasts from May to November and not only brings the rains but also stronger winds and storms, although the transitional periods of early May and late November are supposed to be calm with exceptionally clear water.

Only lightweight clothing is needed. Local people in Male and in villages on the islands find western styles of dress extremely offensive. Brief shorts, tight fitting clothing etc. should be avoided by both men and women. A sarong and something to cover the head (for women) is recommended. Don't forget swimming gear and clothes to protect you from the sun including a wide brimmed hat. You may consider wearing a Tshirt whilst snorkelling to avoid bad sunburn on the back and shoulders.

Comfortable shoes and sandals.

Luggage: On tour

One main piece of baggage and a daypack. A soft holdall is the best option as luggage is stored under the beds in the cabins. Remember you are expected to carry your own baggage - so don't overload yourself.

Snorkels, masks and flippers are provided on the Dhonis. All equipment is thorough sanitised after each use. You are welcome to bring your own equipment if you prefer. Bring a high factor sun protection and a hat. We recommend Factor 30 plus for snorkelling as the water intensifies the sun's strength, swimming in a tshirt is a good idea for extra protection. Both bath and beach towels are provided on the Dhoni. We advise you bring a water bottle for day to day use.

Food and drink The costs for meals may vary depending upon location, type of restaurant and number of courses eaten and so the prices given are an average guide. Local restaurants located off the beaten track may be less expensive, whereas an upmarket restaurant located in the centre of a major city may charge more.

Foreign exchange, transport information, accommodation notes.

We work with a local operator who owns a number of different Dhonis; all of which are different sizes with different layouts. We plan to use a 5 berth Dhoni. All Dhonis that we use are fitted with diesel engines, which are used most of the time that we are travelling. Some of the boats still have sails but these are used very infrequently. The 5 cabins are small and simple but adequate for sleeping and changing. In all of the cabins there will be bunk beds and so the person on the top will need to be prepared to climb up to their bed. Two of the cabins have slightly wider (4.1ft) lower bunk beds and where possible we will allocate these to couples but we cannot guarantee this, couples should state preference when booking. Four cabins have an ensuite bathroom with WC and shower. The other cabin is assigned a bathroom with WC and shower that is not ensuite. There are plugs available in each cabin with electricity available when the boats generator is running (when the boat is moving or the crew are cooking meals) so it is possible to charge cameras and phones during the tour. There is no A/C but there is a fan in each cabin. There are small cupboards in each cabin for you to store valuables such as passports. There is no WiFi on board but it is possible to buy a SIM card from the airport or speak with your Tour Leader for advice on this while you have time in Male. Good quality snorkelling equipment including mask, snorkel, flippers and swim noodles are provided (we will ask for your shoe/flipper size before you travel!). You are free to bring your own equipment should you wish. No scuba diving equipment will be carried on board. Whilst we do our best to deliver the advertised itinerary, the safe operation of the boat and all passengers is the crew's priority and as such, deviations from the planned itinerary may be necessary due to weather/local conditions. All Dhonis are inspected annually in order to retain their license. They carry enough lifejackets for all clients and crew plus buoyancy aids and a dinghy with small outboard engine. All boats have a CB radio, and for most of the voyage the boat is in mobile phone range of the islands. Full fire fighting equipment is also carried on every boat. There will be a minimum of 4 crew on board including the captain and cook - depending on the number of people on the boat. Most of the cabins offer couchette accommodation on a twin share basis with all bedding provided.

Food and drink

All meals and a bottle of drinking water each day are provided on board the Dhonis. There is a bar for any additional soft and alcoholic drinks you may wish to buy, a dining area and a sundeck to relax and sunbathe throughout the day. It should be noted that it is not permitted for tourists to bring alcohol in to the country and it will be confiscated at the airport if you attempt to do so. Breakfasts are often mashuni - a tuna and coconut combination which is served with roti style bread or a more western start to the day with eggs and toast. Most lunches and dinners will have a pasta element and during the afternoons the boat crew will often bake a cake. Plenty of fresh veg, meat and fruit is also provided. Please advise us at time of booking if you require a gluten free or vegetarian diet.

Can you drink the water?  The water quality is poor and therefore it is recommended to avoid drinking tap water during your trip.

Maldives Snorkelling Tours - Full & Half Day Trips

Maldives Snorkelling Tours (w/ Price & Itinerary)

The Maldives is located smack in the middle of the Indian Ocean, making it the perfect vacation destination for couples who value privacy. While luxury stays over azure waters are one of the biggest draws of this country, there are countless water-based activities to keep visitors engaged. Maldives snorkelling tours are at the forefront of seaside exploration.

The versatility of snorkelling in the Maldives will astound any traveller. One can snorkel right under one’s over water villa in a private island , explore the house reef of any public island, by signing up for an all-inclusive Maldives vacation package . For a luxurious experience you can even stay on a liveaboard to go on multiple snorkelling dives spread over many days!

Snorkeling, Sandbank & Sunset Cruise Trip

Snorkel in the sparkling blue sea with crystal clear water gently breaking on the pure white sands with gracefully swaying palms. Cool sea breeze whispering in the background, the lush greenery and a wide variety of flora and fauna made Maldives an ideal honeymoon destination .

Maldives’ weather remains quite balanced round the year. This makes it possible to snorkel whenever you visit this island nation. However, the best time of the year to visit the Maldives is November to January, which is the dry season. The scarcity of rain makes these months a time of great underwater visibility.

Take a look at some of the best snorkelling tours and dive sites in The Maldives.

#1 Coral Garden Maldives Snorkelling Tour

Coral Garden Maldives Snorkelling Tour

Suitable for snorkelling beginners, Coral Garden is a protected dive site with a minimum depth of 3 metres. The coral blocks have a gentle slope leading to a depth of 20 metres.

This dive site is highly recommended for those who want to see a lot of marine diversity just below the water surface. You can see both hard and soft corals here, along with other underwater beings such as schooling snapper, stingrays, moray eels and green turtles.

A snorkelling tour in the Coral Garden can easily be extended to include a sandbank dining experience on the nearest Maldivian island of Kuredu which is just 5 minutes away. Even if you happen to be on the isle of Komandoo , you can take a short 30-minute boat ride to Coral Garden to enjoy its reefs.

#2 Bodu Giri Maldives Snorkelling Tour

Maldives Snorkelling Tours

The Maldives is home to about 1,200 little islands , each combining to form a cluster called an atoll . Since most of this region is rich in marine biodiversity, you can only imagine the countless snorkelling dive sites that must exist here! Bodu Giri is one such site which is great not only for its shallow corals but also vibrant shoals.

Bodu Giri is about 150 km away from Male, the capital of The Maldives . Nevertheless, the world’s smallest capital is only a short seaplane ride away from most of the distance isles. The top reef at Bodu Giri is just 3 metres from the sea level. If you carry an underwater camera such as GoPro, you should be able to take amazing shots of the smallest folds in the corals with the help of a compatible gimbal.

Keep your eyes peeled for colourful marine species such as the big-nose unicorn fish, the butterfly fish, the napoleon wrasse, coral groupers, painted rock lobsters and the moorish idol fish. As you snorkel, you can also sight tunas, oriental sweet lips, blue-fin jacks, blue-striped snappers, neon fusiliers and yellow-back fusiliers.

Located in Maldives’ Lhaviyani Atoll , Bodu Giri’s abundance of coral columns is a result of its unique location which is protected from strong water currents. The underwater island is also able to sustain schooling fish. Do not miss the coordinated swimming display as you watch certain schools where each fish synchronizes its movement with the others.

#3 Huravalhi Maldives Snorkelling Tour

Maldives Full Day Snorkelling Tour

Huravalhi is another island that is a part of the Lhaviyani Atoll in The Maldives. You can either choose to stay at the opulent Huravalhi Island Resort or visit this island from any other Maldivian island on a yacht , a traditional dhoni or a speedboat. Around this island is a sheltered dive spot called Aquarium, which presents amazing half day tours to each and every one.

Aptly named, this place lets you experience an aquarium from the inside as you put on your snorkelling mask and swim away in search of exotic fish and enigmatic corals. The reef growth extends from as deep as 20 metres to a shallow 3 metres from the sea level. This popular diving spot in Maldives is perfect for beginners who are not accustomed to water currents.

If you are a fan of sharks , you will be excited to spot the guitar shark quite easily at Aquarium. Interestingly, these sharks clean their bodies by rubbing off any grime on a coral block. Don’t forget to take videos of unusual underwater activities of the marine life that occur here.

Turtles are not found everywhere, but Huravalhi Island is lucky to have some Hawksbill turtles that live off the sponge and algae that grow on the coral reef in Aquarium. You might also be able to see an octopus or two if you are lucky. These eight-legged organisms generally remain in hiding, but sightings are not impossible. Most easily visible are humpback snappers and blue striped snappers which are schooling fish that travel in groups.

#4 Kuda Giri Maldives Snorkelling Tour

Kuda Giri Maldives Snorkelling Tour w/ Price & Itinerary

One of the most popular snorkelling sites in The Maldives is Kuda Giri. This underwater island has an awe-inspiring collection of tube corals, sponges, starfish and orange cup corals. With an underwater visibility of 5 metres to 15 metres, one will find the waters quite clear as compared to other dive sites. If you have never snorkelled before, book a full day trip with the experts to do this in a safe and fun atmosphere.

Located in the South Male Atoll , Kuda Giri is easily accessible from the islands of Dhigufinolhu, Maafushi and Fihalhohi . This underwater island is rather small in area, but dense in its concentration of marine life. The table corals at the top are just 3 metres deep, making it well worth a dive even for snorkelers who are just starting out.

Among the numerous water fauna one can spot at Kuda Giri, scorpion fish, clownfish and green turtle are the most common. You might have to be patient to sight moray eels which often hide in the crevices of the coral walls. Triggerfish, wrasses, batfish, shrimp, glassfish and gobies can also be seen underwater. Shrimps and gobies often dwell together, the former harvesting sand for its home and the latter keeping a guard on it.

December to May happens to be the best time to snorkel at Kuda Giri which sees bouts of rain and choppy seas from June to November. The waters are usually warm and comfortable for staying underwater for a long time. However, if you are planning to snorkel in the evening or early mornings when the sun is not so warm yet, you should wear thermally insulated swimwear to keep you from getting the chills.

#5 Nakolhu Giri Maldives Snorkelling Tour

Nakolhu Giri Maldives Snorkelling Tour

Located in Faadhippolhu Atoll, or Lhaviyani Atoll , as it is more commonly known, Nakolhu Giri is a fantastic choice for spotting reef octopi. You can witness a unique phenomenon that the octopus uses to camouflage. It not only changes its colour but also shapes in an attempt to hide in the reef.

As you begin to snorkel at Nakolhu Giri, you will come across a flurry of glass fish. Sharpen your observation to sight mantis shrimps, crabs, ribbon eels and more. The top reef is 3 metres deep, a manageable depth for first-time snorkelers. The reef itself is in the formation of a wall in certain parts of this dive site.

#6 The Shipyard Photo Shoot & Snorkelling Tour

The Shipyard Photo Shoot & Snorkelling Tour

A unique underwater attraction in the Lhaviyani Atoll is The Shipyard. This snorkelling site is home to two shipwrecks, only one of which is accessible while snorkelling. You can see the other wrecked ship lying at the seabed at a depth of 21 metres from the sea level.

The Shipyard is a fantastic photo shoot location in The Maldives as one of the vessels is positioned vertically, making the bow jut out of the surface of the Indian Ocean. Both the wrecks are over 40 years old and well covered by corals now that so many decades have passed, besides the strong currents that have fuelled their rapid growth.

Most Maldives day tours include an option to explore the Shipyard with dedicated snorkelling time and photography sessions underwater. The snorkelling instructors are skilled at underwater photography and they ensure that each participant gets a chance to be individually photographed against the upright wrecked ship.

You can also appreciate the marine diversity of the Arabian Sea as you come across grey reef sharks, yellow sweeper schools, Napoleon wrasses, nurse sharks, butterfly fish, morays and damsels. Other sightings possible here are of stingrays, blennies, scorpion fish, emperor angelfish, glassfish and anthias.

Best Season to Snorkel in Maldives

Favourable conditions like high visibility and moderate temperature of the water makes Maldives a favourite destination for Snorkelling. The visibility of the water is especially good during the months of March and April just prior to the onset of the wet monsoon. It is up to 15 – 40 metres (50 – 130 feet).

The temperature of water, on an average is 25°C (77°F), thus making snorkelling much more enjoyable. Maldivian islands boast of varied and rich flora and fauna. There are around 70 different species of colourful coral reefs and more than 700 species of fishes and other aqua marine creatures constituting the aquatic life inside Indian Ocean.

The Maldives is like a paradise, not only because of its surroundings overland, but also because of the colourful mix of underwater fauna that the country is blessed to have. Snorkelling gives every traveller a glimpse into the mysteries of exotic life forms.

One can choose to explore deeper and take up scuba diving in the future, especially to see the pristine coral columns, beds and walls farther below. However, the unassuming charm and ease of snorkelling keeps visitors returning for more adventures in this island nation.

Surf conditions

The Maldives surf season goes from April to October. Waves are incredibly consistent and while June and July may get a bit wet, it's is hard to complain about some rain when the waves are pumping and the water is 28°C. Since the Central and Southern Atolls are harder to access than the Male Atolls, fewer boats operate in the area – which translates to fewer surfers in the line-up. Since most surfers heading to the Central and Southern Atolls are usually interested in more advanced waves, this often leaves other more intermediate spots (but still world-class) completely empty. This is the perfect recipe for a week of scoring incredible waves and improving your surfing skills. CENTRAL ATOLLS

Maldives Tries to Win Back Indian Tourists As Arrivals Fall 40%

Peden Doma Bhutia , Skift

April 16th, 2024 at 9:11 AM EDT

While Maldives enjoys record-breaking arrivals, its tourism companies aren't about to let the Indian market keep falling. They're on a mission to reverse the trend.

Peden Doma Bhutia

The Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators is determined to increase Indian arrivals to the island destination and is taking steps to achieve this.

“Indian arrivals to the Maldives have gone down by almost 40%,” said Abdulla Ghiyas, the association’s president, in an exclusive interview with Skift.

In early January, #BoycottMaldives started trending in Indian social media following a diplomatic dispute between the two countries. Indians accused Maldivian politicians of making disparaging remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

As a result, India, which was the number 2 source market for Maldives, has now fallen to number 6 . India’s share of visitors had been almost 11% – it has shrunk to 5.6%.

Promotions in Indian Cities

Ghiyas said the association will be hosting roadshows in 3 Indian cities in July and confirmed to Skift that one of the cities would be Bengaluru.

The association also plans to engage with Indian social media influencers. “We also want to see how we can work with the tourism board in Maldives as we have partnered with them in the past as well. There are talks that the tourism board is also planning of doing something in India,” Ghiyas said.

At the July roadshows, he said he’s keen to look at cities that have direct connectivity with Maldives.

Ghiyas expressed a desire to have conducted the roadshow earlier, noting that May is when Indian outbound travel peaks. However, he mentioned plans for another round of roadshows towards the end of the year, aiming to include Tier 2 cities. “Even if they lack direct flights to the Maldives, these cities would represent an important market for us,” he said.

the maldives boat tour

Maldives has so far received (from January 1-April 15) 693,867 tourists, up from 606,395 arrivals for the same period last year, as per the latest data from the Maldives tourism ministry.

China is the top source market for the island destination, followed by UK and Russia.

Between January 1-April 15, almost 39,000 Indians visited Maldives, a decline of almost 40%, compared to the 64,250 arrivals for the same period last year.

“We might not talk immediately about the growth scenario, but I would definitely like to see the 40% decline narrow down,” Ghiyas said.

Can’t Ignore India

While Maldives has experienced record-breaking tourism arrivals so far, Ghiyas said it still needs India. “There are properties and resorts that rely heavily on the Indian market, which have been severely affected. This will hurt us in the long term and that is why we have decided to engage with the India market.”

Aminath Suzan, CEO of Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators, pointed to cultural ties, such as similarities in food, language, and pop culture. “We must ensure that unrelated matters do not negatively impact the bond, for which we have dedicated years and built this alliance.”

The association members also recently met with Munu Mahawar, the Indian high commissioner in Maldives, to collaborate closely with his office to boost tourism initiatives.

Dubbing the meeting with Mahawar “positive,” Ghiyas said the high commission has offered assistance to the association. “Once we have a concrete plan, we will definitely follow up with the High Commission and share our plans.”
