In six-part TV series The Tourist, Jamie Dornan joins a coterie of famous foreign actors who have been plonked in the thick of arid Australian land and left to fry in the sun for our dramatic amusement.

The Tourist review – Jamie Dornan is intense in explosively entertaining outback thriller

An Irishman wakes up in Australia with amnesia in this pulse-pounding series packed with humour and philosophical questions

F anging it down an outback road when he is rammed by a truck driver from hell, Jamie Dornan experiences a terrible accident that gives him amnesia – making him forget about all that bondage paraphernalia from Fifty Shades of Grey .

In the explosively entertaining six-part series The Tourist, created and written by Harry and Jack Williams, the Irish actor and former Hugo Boss and Calvin Klein studmuffin plays a louche loner who can’t remember who is he, what he is doing in Australia or why he appears to have “kill me” stamped figuratively speaking across his forehead.

Dornan joins a coterie of famous foreign actors who have been plonked in the thick of arid, unforgiving Australian land and left to fry in the sun for our dramatic amusement. See also: Gary Bond in Wake in Fright , who drank a lot of beer and went mad; Dennis Hopper in Mad Dog Morgan , who drank a lot of moonshine and went mad; Johnathon Schaech in Welcome to Woop Woop , who spent a lot of time with the locals and went mad; and soon to be Zac Efron in Gold, who, the trailer suggests, finds gold in them thar desert and then goes mad.

Come to think of it, Dornan’s character in The Tourist – billed as “The Man” – is pretty sane compared with these rather rabid fellows. He’s like Guy Pearce in Memento in that he’s determined but displaced (in this instance geographically as well as mentally) and constantly banging against the walls of his own mind. If the whole being rammed into near-oblivion wasn’t enough, “The Man” is also a mite concerned when, after meeting the friendly and charming Luci (Shalom Brune-Franklin) at a diner, there appears to be another (rather spectacular) attempt on his life.

The show’s central mystery has something to do with a man who has been buried alive and calls “The Man” from inside a barrel, begging to be found post-haste. Director Chris Sweeney (who helmed episodes one to three, with Daniel Nettheim steering the others) shoves a camera inside a tight coffin-esque space, evoking memories of Ryan Reynolds in Buried.

A big, beefy, cowboy shirt-wearing villain emerges in Billy (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson), who whistles cheerfully but with absolute menace, his merry tune a harbinger of impending doom. In the series’ second half, Alex Dimitriades emerges as another prominent bad guy, hamming it up in super-villain style.

Jamie Dornan as ‘The Man’ with Luci (Shalom Brune-Franklin)

Certain characters aren’t who they say they are, though that does not apply to Helen Chambers – a fair dinkum what-you-see-is-what-you-get probationary constable battling with low self-esteem. She is superbly portrayed by Danielle Macdonald (who played the gossip columnist Lillian Roxon in I am Woman ), bringing loads of colour and detail to what could have been the simple sweet hick. Macdonald’s performance vividly contrasts with the rough and tough Dornan – also perfect in a high-intensity role as a man who is something of a blank slate, frightened by who he is or who he may be. There are philosophical questions about identity to ponder – if viewers pause for a breather and stop chewing their nails – including to what extent each of us are defined by our past actions.

There’s also an oddly good performance from the ever-reliable Damon Herriman, offsetting his recent menacing work by playing a detective inspector in a way that’s both funny weird and funny ha-ha, suiting the show’s quite dry approach to comedy. Many scenes are humorous in a cagey way, sans explicit signposting: at one point for instance we discover a traffic pile-up has been created by two turtles rooting in the middle of the road. Elsewhere, in the aftermath of an intense confrontation, in a shot one could imagine belonging to a Coen brothers movie, the show cuts to a framed picture on a wall bearing the following message: “LIFE IS MADE OF CHOICES. WIPE YOUR FEET OR SCRUB THE FLOOR.”

Damon Herriman as Detective Inspector Lachlan Rogers.

The Tourist is very well shot by Ben Wheeler and Geoffrey Hall (who was also the cinematographer for Chopper , Red Dog: True Blue and Eden ), with colour grading that’s a little off, a little sickly, as if the blues and greens (hard to find in arid outback) in particular have been poisoned from the inside. This is a clever way of visualising the feeling that something isn’t quite right. Sweeney and Nettheim (whose directorial work includes episodes of Halifax: Retribution , Tidelands and Line of Duty) establish a cracker pace that creeps, creeps, creeps up on you, then explodes with a great big thunderclap of action then creeps, creeps, creeps up again.

The “bugger me dead, it’s hot!” action-thriller, as it shall henceforth be known, is by now very familiar, but The Tourist is different: a pulse-pounder that feels fresh despite many genre elements, particularly of the neo-noir variety. The show has a great forwards and backwards momentum, contrasting cliffhanger moments with questions about the past and the ambiguities therein. It’s a vision of Australiana that’s less “ where the bloody hell are you? ” than who the bloody hell are you, and what the bloody hell will happen next? And – summarising my personal response – bloody hell, this is good.

Jamie Dornan in The Tourist

The Tourist is the BBC’s latest explosive drama starring Jamie Dornan and it’s set to keep us on tenterhooks in the New Year.

The six-part series follows a British man who finds himself in the glowing red heart of the Australian outback, being pursued by a vast tank truck trying to drive him off the road.

‘An epic cat and mouse chase unfolds and the man later wakes in hospital, hurt, but somehow alive,’ the synopsis teases. ‘Except he has no idea who he is.

‘With merciless figures from his past pursuing him, The Man’s search for answers propels him through the vast and unforgiving outback.’

Here’s everything you need to know about The Tourist, including who is in the cast and when it’s released.

Who does Jamie Dornan play in The Tourist?

Jamie Dornan takes on the role of The Man in The Tourist.

When we meet The Man, he’s forgotten who he is. He’ll be forced to reckon with past actions he has no recollection of, and over the course of six episodes, wrestle with whether the person he was is the person he is now.

Jamie Dornan in The Tourist

Describing his character in five words, Dornan said: ‘Desperate, confused, alone, angry, and complicated.’

‘We find The Man driving through the dusty outback of South Australia and it’s very hard to gauge much about this guy,’ he teased. ‘We find out that he’s been followed by a big, nasty, aggressive-looking truck, and The Man gets hit off the road, having this terrible accident.

‘He wakes up in a hospital, doesn’t remember anything, doesn’t know who he is, and then this mad, epic journey starts with him trying to piece together what’s happened.’

Who else is in The Tourist cast?

The Tourist also stars Dumplin’s Danielle Macdonald, who plays probationary constable Helen Chambers.

Helen is described as earnest and eager to please, locked in a self-conscious struggle with her weight. Her struggle will be having the confidence to trust her instincts – which are far more perceptive than she realises.

Danielle Macdonald in The Tourist

Line Of Duty’s Shalom Brune-Franklin takes on the role of Luci Miller, a young woman working in a diner in a one-horse town in the middle of nowhere.

Although she has an infectious energy, Luci is hiding a past that will become clearer as the series goes on, a past that places her at the centre of some very dangerous situations.

Mindhunter’s Damon Herriman plays Detective Inspector Lachlan Rogers.

DI Rogers is described as a ‘no-bullshit police officer’. As one of the most highly regarded detective inspectors in Australia, he bears the confidence that comes with this.

Shalom Brune-Franklin takes on the role of Luci Miller in The Tourist

The Cry’s Alex Dimitriades is Kosta Panigiris, a wealthy and powerful man who has always kept at arm’s length from the messier side of his nefarious business.

Neither his capacity for brutality nor his intelligence (both of which got him where he is now) should be underestimated.

The Missing’s Ólafur Darri Ólafsson plays American man Billy Nixon who runs a trucking distribution company on the outskirts of the small city of Cooper Springs.

Mindhunter’s Damon Herriman plays Detective Inspector Lachlan Rogers

His appearance and his cool tempered voice belie a sinister mind beneath.

Australian actor Kamil Ellis takes on the role of Sergeant Lammon, an easy-going cop in the sleepy tourist town of Burnt Ridge. His personable, small-town attitude to policing is at odds with the serious detectives from Major Crimes that he’ll be forced to work with.

The Tourist, created by siblings Harry and Jack Williams, the Emmy-winning producers of The Missing and Fleabag, was the most watched drama of 2022 in the UK and a hit internationally, with season 2 proving just as popular domestically.

After learning some hard home truths about our amnesiac anti-hero, did Elliott manage to balance the karmic scales this season? No spoilers here of course, but we can say that season 2, saw Helen escort him to his native Ireland where they found themselves unwittingly in the middle of a bitter family feud and also hunted by brand new enemies.

Yet, as Niamh Cassidy (Joyride’s Olwen Fouéré) cautioned Helen in the series' trailer, “You don’t know him sweetheart. You don’t even know his real name.”

The second outing also welcomed Conor MacNeill (Industry), Diarmaid Murtagh (Vikings), and Francis Magee (Kin) to the cast, and delivered even bigger twists and turns than the first season of this compelling crime drama series. Jamie Dornan in \"The Tourist.\"

The trailer for the second season of "The Tourist," starring County Down native Jamie Dornan , is here just after Netflix announced the drama will be available in the US on the streaming platform in February.

"Set against the striking backdrop of Ireland, the upcoming series sees Elliot ( Jamie Dornan ) and Helen (Danielle MacDonald) dragged into a longstanding feud and forced to deal with the consequences of his past actions," BBC said on December 15.

"After Elliot quickly goes missing, Helen seeks the help of Detective Ruairi Slater (Conor MacNeill), before secrets of Elliot’s past are later uncovered."

BBC says alongside MacNeill, series two of "The Tourist" introduces a raft of new characters including Niamh Cassidy, Diarmaid Murtagh, Nessa Matthews, Mark McKenna, and Francis Magee.

Series one of "The Tourist" was the UK’s most-watched drama of 2022 across all platforms, BBC says.

All episodes of "The Tourist" will be available on BBC iPlayer from January 1, before becoming available in the US on Netflix in February.

Netflix has acquired exclusive rights for the series outside the UK and Ireland after the first season of the show dropped off Max, HBO's streaming service, in September.

Netflix announced on December 14 that the first season of "The Tourist" will be available on the streaming platform in the US on February 1, 2024, while new episodes from season two of "The Tourist" will be available on February 29, 2024.

The Netflix premiere of "The Tourist" is the first time season two will be available in the US.

The Guardian says that the Irish plotline in the upcoming second season of "The Tourist" features "kidnappings, molotov cocktails and some ludicrous laugh-out-loud moments.

"Think balaclava-clad thugs hand-jiving to the Pretenders’ Brass in Pocket and what must be the funniest ever mid-fight joke about a high-street coffee chain.

"It is absolutely wild."

After a double instalment last year, Race Across the World is back!

As previously revealed, five new teams will take on a whopping 15,000 kilometre race across several countries. From northernmost Japan, the groups will travel across six seas and eight borders, traversing across the volcanic ring of fire before reaching the finish line in Lombok.

Narrated by John Hannah, the new season will see the groups leave behind their smartphones, internet access and bank cards in a test like no other as they all vie to finish in first place and win a huge £20,000 cash prize.

In a newly released trailer, fans have been given a first look at the East Asian adventure, airing soon on BBC One.

The 30-second clip shows the contestants experiencing highs and lows as they race from one checkpoint to the next, with one competitor exclaiming: "Oh my God, it's real now."

More like this

"It's all in Japanese mate," another contestant says as we see his companion putting his head in his hands, before another wipes away tears, exclaiming: "It's hard, really hard."

Those gearing up and ready to go are: brother and sister Betty and James, married couple Stephen and Viv , best friends Alfie and Owen , and two mother-and-daughter duos, Brydie and Sharon and Eugenie and Isabel . In the last season, the contestants tackled an epic Canadian adventure, with Cathie and Tricia emerging victorious.

Time will soon tell which of the duos will take this year's top prize.
