What Are Senior Travel Clubs? And Should You Join One?

What is a senior travel club, anyway? A scam? A great way to save on travel? A way to meet potential travel companions? Or something else entirely?

It turns out that senior travel clubs can be any of these things.

What Are Senior Travel Clubs?

Many travel clubs charge an annual membership fee. Typically, the membership fee is modest, and provides you with access to members-only publications, information, discounts or online travel content. A few travel clubs charge an initiation fee and annual dues.

Before you decide to join a senior travel club, take a few minutes to find out which type of travel club you are considering.

Travel Groups

For seniors who are not interested in solo travel, joining a travel club can help them find interesting trips to take.  Some senior travel clubs exist for the sole purpose of organizing trips for members. Trip lengths and destinations vary.

Travel Information and Social Gathering

Other senior travel clubs are social in nature. Members are invited to attend monthly or quarterly meetings, which may involve social time and, possibly, a presentation from a member or a travel professional. This type of senior travel club would be a good fit for someone who is looking for inspiration, new friends or potential travel companions.

Transportation or Activity-Specific Travel

RV owners will be familiar with this type of travel club; in addition to clubs for owners of all types of RVs, you can also join a travel club for owners of your make or class of RV. Train enthusiasts can also join travel clubs just for them.

If your interests lie elsewhere, you will probably be able to find a travel club with like-minded members, such as a travel club for seniors who enjoy outdoor adventure.

Women-Only Travel

While there are many travel providers that organize women-only trips, it can be a bit more difficult to find a travel club created just for women. Thelma & Louise is one of the best-known online women-only travel clubs. Members share travel stories, plan trips and meetups and look for travel companions via Thelma & Louise’s website.

Money-Saving Club

Some travel clubs are formed to help members save money. Boondockers Welcome and The Affordable Travel Club , for example, help travelers arrange free RV parking (Boondockers Welcome) or lodging (The Affordable Travel Club) at members’ homes.

Travel Club Scams

Some so-called travel clubs are scams designed to part you from your hard-earned money. In some cases, scammers offer free airfare or hotel stays, often by postcard or at a “travel seminar,” but require you to pay a reservation fee in advance. When you try to book a trip, your dates are never available, and the scammer keeps your fee payment. Another version of this scam involves restrictive terms and conditions that prevent you from ever actually booking a trip.

Other travel clubs run by scammers charge thousands of dollars in upfront membership fees, promising travel discounts or free travel. Instead, the scammers disappear with your money and you are left with nothing.

To protect yourself against scammers, never agree to join a travel club if a salesperson is pressuring you to do so.

Get all the information about the club in writing and take it home.  A reputable travel club will willingly give you the information you request, without pressuring you to join.

Read every word. Do an online search for the name of the club and the names of its owners. If possible, have an attorney read the contract; in the absence of an attorney, ask a family member or friend to read the document.

Never give your credit card number or other financial information to a travel club representative unless you are joining the club. Pay dues, fees and travel costs by credit card so that you can dispute them if problems occur.

Remember, if something seems too good to be true, it is.

Where to Find Senior Travel Clubs

Start your search for a senior travel club in your own community. Senior centers and recreation departments often sponsor senior travel clubs or organize outings for local seniors. You can also do an online search; this approach is particularly helpful if you are looking for an activity-specific travel club.

Alternatives to Senior Travel Clubs

If you are reluctant to pay annual dues or a membership fee to belong to a travel club, perhaps a well-organized tour is a better choice. You can find women-only, high adventure and other themed tours quite easily, either through a travel agent or online.

You may be able to find travel meetups and presentations in your local community, perhaps through a church or community center. If you are mainly interested in meeting people who enjoy travel or getting travel information, you may be able to do so without paying money to join a club.

Other places to learn about vacation destinations and meet people who love to travel include colleges – look for noncredit courses – as well as libraries and travel shows.

Have you ever joined a senior travel club? Why did you join? How did things work out? Share your experiences in the comments section below.

Still from Thelma and Louise

Single female seeks similar for travel and adventure

'I'm a fun, light-hearted, down-to-earth girl, I love life and nice dinners, ' reads the entry on the website.

'Rosielove', a 29-year-old single woman from Belfast, hopes to meet someone but she isn't looking for romance. She wants to find a like-minded female to go on a luxury cruise with her, and is using a new website, www.thelmaandlouiseclub.com , to do so.

More than 600 women in 25 countries have already joined the Thelma and Louise Club, launched last week as a forum for women to find female traveling companions. Members post messages about themselves, their interests and where they wish to travel to, then wait for other members to email them. Some are divorcees, widows and single women who don't have a travel mate but don't wish to go alone, others such as Vivien, 51, from Suffolk, have partners but want to escape without them. 'I have a workaholic husband , but my children have flown the nest .'

Another member, Elena Makagonova, 34, from Moscow, said: 'I'm single and have travelled by myself for 10 years. My female friends are married with kids or can't afford to go abroad. '

The website was co-founded by Christine Davies , a widow and ex-director for the BBC's travel programmes, who was inspired after taking an adventurous holiday in Australia with a divorced friend of her sister's that she had never met. ' We made a plan via the internet and booked a backpacker's bus trip through Australia's red centre. We were two middle aged "princesses" used to luxury holidays with our husbands, but we loved roughing it. '

Christine set up the site with Grace Frankel, her friend of 20 years and the owner of a travel company. Grace had recently separated from her husband, after the death of her two sons. The women say their personal tragedies made them realise 'how strong the bonds between women are'. Users can browse the site for free but to contact another user they need to register which costs £9.99 a year.

Thelma And Louise Reviews

Thelma and louise review.

Editor's Star Ratings:

Editor's Review:

“Drive Louise! Drive! Drive the car! Go! Go! Go go go go go go!”

Now and again we all want to escape the rigmarole of life, whether it’s just the mundane trudge of going work or because we’ve just committed a robbery. ThelmaAndLouise.com is a travel companion website for women , with a number of community features that help it to stand out. What’s more, it’s free to use! There’s plenty to like here, so let’s get started...

What you will notice when you first load up the site is how well organized it is. You can easily lose yourself looking at photos and reading articles written by the members. The home page content changes depending on the time of year , meaning you’ll find Christmas getaways near Christmas, winter sun or something around Easter, and so on. This shows that the site’s team really care about creating a space for people who are real travellers, as it takes their potential trips into consideration.

Moving around the website is mostly very simple and you can choose from four main tabs : Inspired (where you can read articles or listen to podcasts), Plan Your Trip (where you can talk on forums, respond to meet ups and more), Find a Travel Buddy (where you can search for travel partners or groups) and Quick Links (which simply takes you to the busiest areas of the site).

There are hoards of good travel articles written by people who have been traveling. These are really useful because they give you a good idea of a particular location whilst also offering some tips on where to eat, drink, stay and so on. Some writers also include specific details on bus prices, train station locations, habits and local traditions. Meanwhile you can listen to podcasts , which is quite a nice way of getting to grips with your potential route, particularly if you are driving or on a walk (and therefore can’t read).

Finding a buddy is fairly simple as you can choose the age range, preferred holiday type, destination and budget. However, there’s not so much in the way of matching, and further filtering through the results isn’t that simple. You can, however, build a list of your favorite members, which is a good way of developing a group of people you think you’d like to meet in person.

There are not really any links to sites where you can reserve hotels or book plane tickets, but you can send messages to multiple recipients so you can arrange group trips and discuss the nuances of the journey. Profiles contain basic information but this could be further developed to allow you to express what you’re interested in a bit more. Membership numbers seem healthy  and, on evidence of the articles we read, people definitely do use the website to meet up and travel together.

Overall, Thelma And Louise does a grand job of letting women meet online and arrange trips abroad. Its great virtue is in the sheer number of articles it contains, as well as its useful community features. This site is also free to use, so the value is unbeatable.

  • Trivia The sequence where Darryl slips and falls over on the builder's supplies as he is leaving for work was unscripted, as Christopher McDonald genuinely lost his footing. Despite this, he remained in character, yelling at the workmen as he got into the car and drove away. As he states on the DVD commentary, director Sir Ridley Scott liked the result so much, he kept it in the film.
  • Goofs While it is a popular movie trope that a caller must stay on the line a minimum amount of time before the call can be traced, by the time of this movie's setting, calls could be traced as soon as the connection was made. This is true even with a landline, a public phone, or a long distance call, as was the case in the film.

State Trooper : [sobbing] Please! I have a wife and kids. Please!

Thelma : You do? Well, you're lucky. You be sweet to 'em, especially your wife. My husband wasn't sweet to me. Look how I turned out.

Thelma & Louise: A Tribute Road Trip Through the Classic Film’s Utah Settings

6 Days   •   312 Miles

This itinerary brings a whole new meaning to hitting the open road. Perfect for fans of the beloved film “Thelma & Louise,” tour the exact places where the movie was shot, and make some memories of your own exploring the beauty of this exquisite desert. You can go high-adventure and rough it, or stay in plush lodging with wine pairings at dinner — whatever you and your closest posse are seeking.

The 1991 adventure drama “Thelma & Louise” delighted audiences everywhere — but especially struck a chord with women. The film was a rarity, a “buddy” adventure movie starring two women, played by Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis. The story inspired generations of audiences, who found the film relatable, funny, inspiring and gut-wrenching all at once.

As the duo flees the law, forsakes convention and finds a true sense of freedom for the first time in their lives, their journey takes them through wild open landscapes that feel absolutely fitting for the tale’s themes. And while the story takes place on a road trip that’s supposedly from Arkansas to Arizona, much of the movie was actually filmed in Utah , from the looming desert mountain in the opening credits to the epic “Grand Canyon” car scene at the end. (Spoiler: That wasn’t the Grand Canyon — the scene was shot at Fossil Point outside Moab , Utah.)

It just so happens that Utah’s desert wilds make the perfect setting for a road trip with your best friends (or with any fans of the film, of course). Not only can “Thelma & Louise” diehards check out the places where the movie’s iconic moments took place, but there’s potential for plenty of your own adventure, too. The film and its characters made history. Now it’s your turn to thoughtfully explore these rugged and fragile lands.

Pack your hiking boots, sun hat and outlaw soul. Vintage convertible optional.

Experience the Liberating Wonder of Arches National Park

  • Drive to Courthouse Towers
  • Take a classic Arches National Park hike

Moab today may be a mecca for mountain bikers, river runners, rock climbers, Jeep crawlers and anyone with the sense to point their cameras at the rugged red-tinted landscape. But Moab comes with a storied past, too — from the days its earliest Native American inhabitants carved petroglyphs into the towering desert canyons, all the way up to the area’s heyday as a go-to film location for Hollywood directors. Over decades, classics like “Rio Grande,” “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” “Star Trek,” “Wagon Master,” and “Geronimo” have filmed scenes here. So as you gaze at your wondrous sandstone-studded surroundings, think of John Wayne riding his horse into the sunset here — or, even better, Thelma and Louise in their 1966 Ford Thunderbird.

You’ll start your day in Arches , a crown jewel of a national park just a few minutes outside Moab. Shortly after entering the park, you’ll pass a cluster of soaring rock formations called the Courthouse Towers. This is the spot where Thelma and Louise, pulled over for speeding, decide to take the trooper’s gun and leave him in his car trunk. (Hey, they did apologize.)

While you’re in the neighborhood, check out a few of the iconic hikes and overlooks around the national park. Delicate Arch is a can’t-miss landmark made famous on the Utah license plate and well worth the three-mile round-trip hike across gorgeous solid sandstone. If you can, sign up for a ranger-led tour of the Fiery Furnace , an insanely intricate maze of crimson rock fissures and pinnacles. And don’t leave without a stop at Devils Garden , a wonderland of red-hued rock shapes emerging from the living cryptobiotic soil, studded with hardy desert sage and juniper. Wandering this land quiets the mind and frees the soul. You can easily see why our film’s renegade heroines experienced new realizations here in the wide-open.

Where to Stay : Camp in Arches National Park , rent a hotel room or Airbnb in Moab or try glamping under the stars (Read: " The Best Time to Visit Moab "). You can also rent a room at nearby Red Cliffs Lodge and schedule a reservation for dinner at the lodge, which is the perfect way to cap off a desert day. (As a fun bonus, there is a Movie Museum at the Red Cliffs Lodge that’s free to the public and includes interesting props and memorabilia from local films, including “Thelma and Louise.”)

Tips for Travel : The Moab area is gorgeous year-round and is fun to visit during any season. The high desert climate shows its more extreme edges at the high point of summer and darkest days of midwinter, so if that’s when you’re visiting, just plan ahead when it comes to clothing, layers and choice of vehicle. You can explore perfectly comfortably in winter if you bundle up and bring microspikes for hiking shoe traction. You can also have a wonderful visit in the heat of summer if you just time your hikes for early and late in the day. No matter the season, travel responsibly, practicing Leave No Trace principles while recreating and, when possible, supporting local during your visit to help keep Utah Forever Mighty .

See Firsthand the Vistas of the Film’s Final Scene

  • Drive to famous Dead Horse Point Overlook
  • Take a walk on the East Rim Trail System
  • Stroll the galleries and follow with a beer and a bite in town

If there’s one scene of “Thelma & Louise” that viewers may never shake from their minds, it’s the soaring car flying above the Grand Canyon at the movie’s end. While the scene is arresting on many levels, there’s another startling fact to contemplate: that this wasn’t filmed at the Grand Canyon at all. Rather, it was filmed at Fossil Point, visible from Dead Horse Point State Park outside Moab. You can get a sense of the river canyon’s sheer scope and splendor from Dead Horse State Park’s West Rim overlook trail.

To shoot the scene, the film producers needed to send a real car flying off the cliff — their budget didn’t allow for special effects. It took months to put everything perfectly into place, including stripping everything out of three identical Ford Thunderbirds to make them light enough to slingshot into the air. They constructed dummies to sit in the actresses’ seats, with plaster casts of their heads for a more realistic effect. On shoot day, the first car they flung into the air sank like a rock. But after a few adjustments, they set the second sacrificial car into the air, and it soared in a perfect arc. The movie was concluded. And they never even needed to crash the third stunt car.

You can spend the rest of your day strolling the majestic Dead Horse State Park Trail System, with a variety of short, easy hiking routes that let you explore the canyon’s upper heights firsthand. Dart onto the Basin Overlook Spur for a quiet moment contemplating the expanses around you from a secluded rock shelf along the mesa.

When you’ve had your fill of exquisite sandstone topography, head back into town to stroll Moab’s fine Native American and desert-inspired art galleries , where you can find paintings, sculptures, jewelry, pottery, photography and housewares from local artists. Sip a cold beer at the infamous Woody’s Tavern and have a decadent dinner at the charming Desert Bistro. Or venture a 30-minute drive up the scenic Colorado River Road Highway for a stately dinner at the River Grill at Sorrel River Ranch.

Where to Stay: In the center of walkable Moab, or venture from the beaten path and stay along the Colorado River at Sorrel River Ranch or Red Cliffs Lodge.

Take a Tour of Real-Life Ghost Towns

  • See the desolate art and magic of Cisco
  • Drive the lonesome road to Thompson Springs
  • Hike to the petroglyphs of Sego Canyon

About an hour from Moab, the tiny ghost town of Cisco sits a little way off the main highway. Eerie yet beautiful, a consistent wind blows errant sagebrush through the ramshackle buildings barely standing from an earlier era. The police chase scene from “Thelma & Louise” was shot here, with plenty of wide-open terrain to give the scene a sense of near-endless desert.

Cisco does, in fact, have exactly one resident — the caretaker of a very unique artist-in-residence program, which gives artists from around the world the chance to come and spend a month in the ghost town, with no utilities, very simple lodging and few visitors. Artists quietly work on their projects, one by one, and set a few pieces out for sale if someone does drive through. The project is called Home of the Brave , and it’s well worth checking out.

Then, drive up through Thompson Springs, an old Western town nearing ghost-town status, with just a handful of remaining residents and crumbling, boarded-up buildings. Shots from “Thelma & Louise” were filmed here, and you can see it certainly conveys the sense of a dusty, windblown once-was town.

You can continue up the road to the full-fledged ghost town of Sego, where hundreds of residents once eked out an existence mining, but only crumbling building foundations remain. Be sure to stop and visit the extraordinary petroglyph panels just outside town. A clearly marked parking lot with plaques make it easy to find and give some historic flavor.

You may work up an appetite on your ghost town adventures, so stop back in Green River for classic American eats and a fully stocked salad bar at the Tamarisk Restaurant. Or pull up at the town taco truck, Tacos La Pasadita, for one of the best platters you’ll ever enjoy, complete with a salsa bar, all set up in the parking lot of a former gas station which the food truck has taken over with picnic tables.

Where to Stay: Green River , or head back to Moab

Pictured: “Thelma & Louise” near Thompson Springs, 1991. Photo: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Wrap Your Road Trip in the Majestic La Sal Mountains

  • Drive to La Sal to catch the view of the film’s opening credits
  • Take a hike from the high desert mountains
  • Head back to town for a little guided off-roading

The lonesome mountain road at the opening of “Thelma & Louise” is a stark and poignant sight. Drive to the tiny town of La Sal to approach this high mountain range yourself, crossing the desert valley flats for an up-close view of peaks that hit well over 12,000 feet in elevation. Not only was the opening vista shot here, but some chase scenes from the movie were, too.

Since you’re in the neighborhood — and in the mood for adventure — drive up La Sal Pass road to really get up into the cool thin air. There are multiple gorgeous hikes you can take up here to feed your wanderlust, including Mt. Peale. You can also take a walk around Medicine Lake.

If you’d like to head back to Moab, this is an excellent adventure-driving themed day, which lends itself well to a guided four-wheel-drive “rock crawler” expedition. If time permits, this is a thrilling way to get a sense of what vehicles can truly do on the local terrain. They can go up, down and around things you’d never imagine. And you have to think: if Thelma and Louise had this kind of technology on their Thunderbird, they may have baffled their pursuers even more.

The Ultimate Thelma & Louise Road Trip (with map!)

Explore the open road through the rear-view mirror of Thelma and Louise's iconic '66 Thunderbird and follow the tire tracks of these two daring women across the American Southwest. Adventure and freedom await you on this world-famous Thelma & Louise road trip!

Replicating Thelma and Louise's 1,440-mile road trip will take 25 hours to drive nonstop. You will drive through Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona while avoiding Texas on your way to the Grand Canyon, just like Thelma and Louise did.

Are you ready for the ride of a lifetime? Read on to learn about the route from the movie, where to stay on your own adventure and the best things to do and see en route - including our favorite Thelma & Louise filming locations. Just make sure you stay on the right side of the law, unlike our mischievous duo!

Note: Spoilers ahead!

Where did Thelma and Louise travel in the movie, and how long would this road trip take?

Thelma and Louise are two friends from Arkansas (most likely Little Rock) who plan to set off on a fun-filled road trip. As with all grand plans in the movies, absolutely nothing could go wrong... right?

Everything goes topsy-turvy when Louise kills a man to protect Thelma, and the duo is soon chased by the police from one state to the other, until they reach their destination in Grand Canyon.

Thelma and Louise - Selfie Polaroid Scene in the Car

The route we have created is inspired by Thelma and Louise's journey, even though it might stray from their fictional route at times due to ambiguities in the movie itself. The Movie Route from Little Rock, Arkansas to Grand Canyon will take 25 hours to drive and will cover 1,440 miles.

By contrast, The Shorter Route is perfect if you don't have the time to dedicate to the Main Route. It will take you from Taos to Grand Canyon in 8 hours and 30 minutes, spanning 480 miles.

We suggest putting aside at least 5 days to complete this monumental Thelma & Louise road trip, so that you can explore some of the most famous landmarks in the United States, while making some life-long memories with your own best buds.

Planning the best route for a Thelma & Louise road trip

If you're planning your own "Thelma & Louise"-style adventure, you'll first need to decide whether you want to travel the entire length of the route (aka "The Movie Route" in this guide) from Little Rock, Arkansas to the Grand Canyon, or a shorter subsection of their journey.

The decision will most likely come down to how much time you have on your hands. As Louise might say, "you get what you settle for", but luckily, neither choice here will feel like settling at all, as you drive from one iconic landscape to another.

The Movie Route starts in Little Rock, Arkansas, and instantly hits the road running through Bellefonte, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Woodward, and Boise City. Each town promises a slice of authentic Americana that will have you reaching for your camera faster than Thelma can grab a tequila.

Thelma and Louise - the duo

On the other hand, The Shorter Route might not feature as many pit-stops, but don't be fooled - this journey is just as exciting. This route follows the last leg of the Main Route, starting in the gorgeous and unique Taos.

The enchanting town of Taos, with its unique blend of Native American and Hispanic cultures, is an ideal start. Then it's a straight run to Tierra Amarilla and the Grand Canyon, offering a scenic tour of the Southwest's stunning desert landscapes.

Follow Thelma and Louise's road trip route

The map above shows our interpretation of the route taken by Thelma and Louise in the classic movie. The darker coloured section of the route corresponds with the The Shorter Route described in this road trip guide. Keep reading for detailed descriptions of both routes, where to stay on either, and the best things to do on the way.

The Movie Route - from Little Rock, Arkansas to The Grand Canyon

Embark on your journey in Little Rock along Interstate 40 (I-40) west, reaching Bellefonte, which could easily double for the backdrop of Thelma and Louise's first transformative encounter at the Silver Bullet bar.

Then set your sights on Tulsa and immerse yourself in the culture and history of the 'Oil Capital of the World'. Move on to Oklahoma City and explore the vibrancy of this city steeped in cowboy culture.

Continue on your journey to Boise City and then Springer, New Mexico. Enjoy the breathtaking Mexican landscape on this stretch of the journey.

Taos Pueblo is believed to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in USA.

On the road again, take US-64 W to reach Tierra Amarilla, a beautiful area known for its unique topography and rich history. It's almost like a scene right out of the movie. The final stretch is on US-64 W once again, leading you to the grand finale - the Grand Canyon.

The Shorter Route - from Taos, New Mexico to The Grand Canyon

If you are flying into Santa Fe Airport, simply follow US-285 north until you reach Taos and start your road trip here. This historic town boasts unique architecture and is the perfect setting to channel your inner Thelma and Louise.

Keep cruising on the highway, heading towards Tierra Amarilla. This scenic drive is perfect for a windows-down, music-up type of road trip - just as Thelma and Louise would do it. Once you arrive, soak up the local history and experience the unique culture of this charming New Mexican town.

Now, let's set your compass to one of the most majestic destinations in the world, the Grand Canyon. Hop back on US-64 W, and you'll find yourself cruising along a route filled with awe-inspiring landscapes.

Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA with an amazing sunrise overlooking the canyons in the distance.

As you near your final destination, take a moment to appreciate the journey that has brought you here - a shorter route, perhaps, but one filled with experiences to cherish. The Grand Canyon's breathtaking vistas are the perfect ending to your Thelma and Louise-inspired road trip.

Best places to stop on a Thelma & Louise road trip

Whether you choose to follow the entire length of Thelma and Louise's journey or opt to drive the last leg of their adventure (or misadventure!) on the Shorter Route, you will need to split up your journey so that you can rest up and make the most of this unforgettable experience.

You can find our top suggestions for where to stop overnight below:

Kick back in style in Oklahoma City

While the Oklahoma motel visited by Thelma, Louise, and JD in the movie is actually located in California, and you can still visit it if you want to get a feel of its atmosphere (see below in our list of filming locations).

However, since California is not located on the route, and if you want a similar lodging option but with a little bit of color, we absolutely love Classen Inn in Oklahoma City . With such cheerful and quirky rooms, we are sure Thelma and Louise would approve!

Back view of the Statue of Coming Through the Rye designed by Frederick Remington at National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.

In addition to its vibrant decor and stylish interior, this inn also boasts a stellar location. You will be located within close proximity of the State Capitol, White Water Bay and the Oklahoma City Museum of Art.

While in Oklahoma City, we recommend visiting the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum to go with the free-spirited, cowboy vibes of the movie.

If you have a little more time on your hands, the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, a symbol of strength and resilience, is also a must-visit before hopping back on the road.

Experience the beauty of the great outdoors in Chama

While parts of Thelma and Louise's journeys are vague, the route they follow is definitely inspirational. If you have chosen to follow the Shorter Route, you will drive through the beautiful scenery of Northern New Mexico and arrive at Chama in 2 hours, traveling from Taos.

Chama is best known as the northern starting point of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, a heritage railroad running between Chama and Antonito, Colorado. Here, you can admire vintage steam locomotives chugging through the beautiful landscapes of the southern Rocky Mountains.

With access to the Carson National Forest and the Continental Divide Trail, Chama is also well known as a hiking, fishing and camping hub. for outdoor enthusiasts. The village's high elevation and clear skies also make it a great place for stargazing.

While in Chama, the rustic Corkins Lodge makes an excellent accommodation option . Situated on the foot of some scenic hills, this beautiful property has a sun terrace, where you can take in the views and bathe in their tranquility.

The lodge has an outdoor swimming pool, where you can take a dip after your drive. Or, if you cannot wait to explore, the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad is a short drive from the property.

  • Vagabond Inn, Los Angeles - The motel where Thelma and Louise encounter the charming JD, portrayed by Brad Pitt, isn't located in expansive open areas as depicted in the film. Instead, it's located near downtown Los Angeles and is called Vagabond Inn Los Angeles at USC.

  • Monument Valley, Utah-Arizona - Monument Valley serves as a stunning backdrop to the women's journey and was also featured in the movie's release poster.

  • Canyonlands National Park, Utah - Similar to Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park's intricate canyons and other striking geological features were used as filming locations to add atmosphere to the duo's eventful escape.
  • Cisco, Utah - The deserted town of Cisco, Utah is used as the filming location for the intense police chase scene.
  • Dead Horse Point State Park, Utah - Even though the storyline ends in the Grand Canyon, the famous final scene of the movie was shot here place here.

Best time to go on a Thelma & Louise road trip

The ideal time to embark on this Thelma and Louise road trip from Little Rock to the Grand Canyon is generally during the spring or fall. These periods offer a balance of moderate temperatures, limited rainfall, and lesser crowd sizes.

However, this trip is feasible year-round, with each season presenting its own unique charm and challenges. The Grand Canyon experiences a varied climate throughout the year due to its elevation.

In summer, temperatures at the rim range from 50 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit, while the canyon bottom can reach up to a scorching 120 degrees. It's worth noting that summer is also the most crowded period.

However, if you want to flaunt your summer wardrobe like Thelma and Louise, then the warmer months would be perfect for this road trip. You might not have a Thunderbird or a convertible, but even if not, what is stopping you from rolling your windows down and feeling the wind in your hair!

Thelma and Louise's car makes its way in the direction of Mexico

During the fall, temperatures at the rim range from 25 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The weather is cooler, the crowds thinner, and the changing foliage offers a beautiful display of colors.

In winter, temperatures at the rim can range from 20 to 45 degrees, and the inner canyon is usually 15 to 20 degrees warmer. Snowfall can occur, potentially leading to some road and trail closures, but also giving the canyon a stunning frosty appearance.

It is also good to keep in mind that the North Rim is closed in winter, so you might want to plan your road trip accordingly.

In spring, temperatures at the rim range from 30 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit, and the park starts to get busier as the weather warms. There may still be some residual snow from winter, but trails and roads are usually clear.

Remember that the weather can change rapidly in these regions, so it's always a good idea to check current conditions before setting out each day.
