PS3/X360 Review - 'Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters'

By brad hilderbrand on april 2, 2011 @ 12:30 a.m. pdt.

tiger woods pga tour 12 the masters ps3

Given the troubles faced by Tiger Woods over the past year, there was some question as to what role he would play in EA's annual tribute to the world of professional golf. While the franchise still bears his name, the focus in this year's game is all about Augusta National and the Masters Tournament, and rightly so. This is the first time in over a decade the Masters has appeared in a video game, and it's an absolutely sublime experience. Couple it with the franchise's new caddy mechanic, and you have one of the best golf games ever made.

Augusta National is the centerpiece of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters , and it has been treated with every ounce of love and reverence you would expect. The course is beautifully represented in the game, and this is one of the first times where I feel the difficulty of a course actually comes through in a video game. I found myself obsessing over every single shot at Augusta, and when the situations arose where I'd normally fire at the green with reckless abandon, I would often dial it back out of respect for the course. Greens are guarded fiercely by deep bunkers and dangerous water, and the putting surfaces are slick as glass. If you've been looking for a course with a genuine challenge, then it awaits you in this game.

tiger woods pga tour 12 the masters ps3

It also can't be understated just how cool it is to experience Augusta firsthand, even if it is just digitally. Most golf fans know that they'd be lucky to ever get inside the gates to watch a round at one of golf's most hallowed courses, let alone play it themselves, so this may be the closest we ever get. It's still incredible, though, as the level of detail makes it feel almost like the real thing. I felt my body quake when I stepped up to the 11th tee to kick off Amen Corner for the first time, and I was subconsciously aiming all my shots to account for the mysterious pull of Rae's Creek. If for no other reason, this is a game all golf fans should pick up just to see the course.

The broadcast-style presentation of the game also adds to the allure, as EA has recruited Jim Nantz, the voice of the Masters, to provide the hole descriptions across all courses and the golf equivalent of play-by-play. This year's edition also marks the return of David Feherty, the fan-favorite commentator who has been missing from the franchise for the past several years. The duo combines to create possibly the best broadcast team the series has ever had, and they're immensely better than the horrid announcers of the past few years. Hopefully this pairing will stick around for a while.

The game also gives you plenty of ways to play the course, either selecting it from the Quickplay menu or going through one of the Masters-specific modes. Masters Moments puts you in the shoes of some of the great winners throughout history as you try to replicate the shots and runs they made to win the tournament. Tiger at the Masters plays like the cover athlete's personal Masters highlight reel, taking you through all of his biggest triumphs. Perhaps the best way to earn a spot in the tournament is through the new career mode, aptly named Road to the Masters.

tiger woods pga tour 12 the masters ps3

This remade version of the classic career structure sees you starting out as an amateur and then working your way up through the Nationwide Tour, Q School and several PGA events before you get your exemption to play at Augusta. Veteran players should have no problem zooming up the ranks and earning a spot in the field, but newer players will appreciate the opportunity to tackle easier courses and build up their skills before going after the game's namesake challenge. Along the way, new equipment is unlocked by passing challenges set before you by sponsors, so earning new equipment is much more fun and engaging than the old method of reaching a certain player level and then spending a ton of cash to buy a driver. On the whole, the entire experience is genuinely more fun than it used to be.

Further improving the game is the fact that you're not alone out on the course anymore, as Tiger Woods 12 also features a new caddy that provides on-course advice before every shot. Similar to Madden 's GameFlow system, the caddy will read the yardage, lie, wind and course conditions before every shot and then make suggestions about where to put the ball. He'll present at least one (and often two) potential shots with the club, grip, loft and power all preset; all you have to do is execute. Of course, that's easier said than done, as you still must dial in just the right amount of power and precision accuracy, and even then a wind gust might be enough to ruin an otherwise perfect shot. Still, it's great to have such genuinely useful AI helping you at every turn, and you can opt to ignore the caddy at any time or turn him off entirely so the mechanic never interferes with or restricts your options.

tiger woods pga tour 12 the masters ps3

Also enhancing this new feature is the fact that caddies develop alongside you and actually get better at reading courses over time. There are four different stages of "course mastery" that you can improve through good play, like going on birdie streaks or sinking long putts. As your course mastery improves, your caddy will make better and better shot recommendations and, most importantly, his skill at reading greens improves drastically. It's a great wrinkle that adds a nice amount of depth to the experience and gives you something more to focus on than simply posting low scores on each round. The only downside to course mastery is that the objectives are the same for every single location, so after a while, it can feel a bit stale. Hopefully next year, the challenges will be a bit more course-specific so as to really spice up gameplay.

Much like Tiger Woods himself, EA's golf franchise has been in a bit of a decline over the past few years. While we wait to find out if this will be a season of redemption for Tiger, it's clear that this is the year EA comes roaring back with its best golf title in a generation. Aside from a few minor nitpicky graphical issues, the presentation is top-notch, and all the new content, modes and mechanics are absolutely spectacular. If anything, EA has set the bar too high for next year's game, but that's a good problem to have. Simply put, this is one of the best golf games ever made, and there's absolutely no reason to pass it up.

Score: 9.2/10

Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 12: The Masters Review (PS3)

We recently changed how we do our reviews. Read about the new process here , then check out the new scoring guidelines and revised scoring rubric . Article 1: Tiger Woods 12 Initial Impressions Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters is the latest iteration of EA Sports' golf series that has prominently featured Tiger on the cover for the better part of the last 10 years. While the series has seen some controversy, EA has stood by its man so far. However, EA decided to hedge its bets somewhat by taking Tiger off the cover of most versions of the game this year, replacing him instead with the most prestigious course and tournament in golf. Beyond the debut of Augusta National and the Masters in video games, there are also new golfers and the usual selection of new courses and our old favorites. But does all of this equal a great game of golf? The answer to that question depends on what you want out of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters .

Presentational This is one of Tiger 's weak points. As a personal bias, I've always wanted games to take a point of view, stick to it and do it well. For instance, if you do broadcast presentation go all out from that perspective. Make it as close to the real thing as possible. Same thing for on the field/course/track. Developers may think dabbling in both is creative or that it might work, but it really just makes both aspects shallow, and it really makes the whole package seem uninspired. Thus, enter T iger Woods PGA Tour 12 . The presentation of Tiger Woods is a strange mix of being on the course with your caddie and watching a pseudo-broadcast on TV. The problem with this, of course, is that neither aspect is explored with the depth that it should be. While many people think golf is a bore to watch on TV, it's hard to beat the tension and buildup of the Masters or any other major being broadcast on TV. However, camera shots like one of the leaderboard, cut-ins of other players and so on just are not present. You don't even know who you are playing with during a round. Remember how Tiger would defeat opponents by simply being paired with them a few years back? Don't expect that in this game. Simply put, Tiger is packaged to be a pseudo-broadcast/simulation/arcade experience through and through. It's shallow but tries to go deep enough to keep you pleased. In the end the presentation just feels vapid and stale after a few rounds. Simulation Realism With the idea in mind that I don't know if Tiger is exactly meant to be a total simulation of golf, it's hard to fault the game for cutting corners on the course. In case you are wondering, you can still post ridiculously low scores at the US Open, some greens feel like mini-golf, and if you simply focus on power and putting you'll dominate in this game. That's not to say the Tiger series has not taken positive steps toward simulation realism over the past few years, because the game is slowly heading in a positive direction. It's just not quite there yet. Drives on lower difficulty levels are automatic. Once you climb up the levels a bit, then they become more unforgiving. However, the caddie simply makes drives automagic. You don't have to change anything yourself, just pull the stick back and push it forward to the correct percentage, and you hit the drive your caddie envisioned. It's like you two have a secret ESP link -- or worse, that the game is doing all the work for you, but I'm trying to give EA credit for imaginative storytelling here. Approach shots are still quite boring to me. I don't know why, but approach shots are my kryptonite in the game of golf because I personally lack the touch needed sometimes. In Tiger there is simply no imagination or touch needed. Thanks to the Caddie feature, you can simply choose to not use anything. Instead, just try to focus on the right motion with your analog stick, and you will be successful every time (or close to it). Putting is mostly a frustrating mix of being too easy or just ridiculously hard. First off, your caddie gives you a blueprint on where to aim with a circle on the green. If you just aim your shot within the circle, most of the time you will end up with a putt that scrapes the hole. Then there are the moments where putts roll back past you if you miss an uphill shot (or roll to the next county if you are putting downhill). Sure, this happens sometimes in golf -- and a lot in miniature golf -- but for it to regularly happen on some courses is just ridiculous. The controls themselves are definitely fine, and, to repeat my theme from a previous section, EA has done a really good job with the control scheme of Tiger . What the developers haven't done well is create a game that fits coherently together. Nevertheless, while the game has issues simulating real golf, it's hard to say the game is not fun. There is definite balance within the game, and you can obtain realistic numbers if you simply find the difficulty settings that work for you. At the same time, realistic results are hit and miss and can't be fine tuned to any meaningful degree. The best way to put it is that Tiger , while not totally realistic, can achieve a semblance of balance if you put some work into fine tuning the game for yourself. However, there are notable flaws and holes in how the game was put together, which makes it seem like the developers cut corners in order to give the game an appearance of being more realistic than it really is. Thus, Tiger Woods 12 will frustrate those looking for a more realistic experience.

Final Thoughts Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters is a game that falls into a trap so many games have fallen into. It tries to be one thing, but it then tries to claim another banner. Unfortunately, if you hold it up to either banner, the game really falls short. At the end of the day, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 is not a bad game. I pointed out a lot of flaws in the game from the realism standpoint, but the game is far from a bad game. If you take the game for what it is and apply some tweaks to balance it for you, the game turns out to be a fun game of golf. The game is not for those looking for a realistic game of golf -- the caddie feature alone guarantees you can't enjoy that type of a game. I understand the reasoning for Tiger being made to appeal to the masses, but perhaps adding another level for hardcore golf fans in the future will round out this game and make it truly great. As it is, the game is sorely lacking in-depth, balance and realistic touches that separate the good games from the great ones in our genre. Visuals: The grass textures look plasticy to me, and each course really runs together. The graphics aren't technically bad, just stylistically they don't work as well as they could. Audio: Commentary isn't quite what it should be (or shouldn't be). Golf sounds are good, crowd noise from the gallery is adequate. It's really a very average package. PS3 Move: Move controls are average and don't risk too much -- future iterations should be better. It's kind of hard to get the hang of touch shots since you have to get percentages right. Course Choices: The number of courses in the PS3 version is pretty solid, DLC will help as well. There's enough variety to give you enough challenges for sure. Lasting Appeal: How long you play Tiger 12 will depend on how you feel about the brand of golf it gives. But there is enough here to keep you busy for awhile. Learning Curve: With the caddie function, you just need to learn the stick movement, and you can begin golfing like a pro. You can learn how to do it yourself, but it seems pointless with the caddie (via ESP) setting up your shots. Score: 6.5 (Above Average)

GameSpot Review

tiger woods pga tour 12 the masters ps3

  • 2.1 User Score Based on 19 user reviews.
  • 58 Absolute Games This is basically an extended version of the free Tiger Woods PGA TourOnline with a weak single-player mode and a $30 price tag.
  • 55 GameSpot Tiger Woods 12 for the PC is a cut-rate and buggy golf sim that shares little more than a name with its superior console counterparts.
  • 50 LEVEL (Czech Republic) Obsolete graphics and dull controls await all wanna-be golfers. The Masters tourney in Augusta with its video diaries is the only reason to try this piece instead of its free online version. [Oct 2011]
  • 15 PC Gamer Now that it's saddled with a price tag, a bare minimum of polish, and one new course, I'm not even sure just telling you to avoid it is enough. [Holiday 2011, p.81]
  • 7.2 User Score Based on 19 user reviews.
  • 75 1UP Like golf, it's certainly a great game, albeit one with limited appeal.
  • 80 DarkStation The addition of The Masters continues to push the Tiger Woods franchise forward. Although there were no major changes to the gameplay this remains to be an amazing game of golf.
  • 90 Game Informer Through the years the Tiger franchise has layered on more realistic tour touches like the FedEx championship, the Masters, or the U.S. Open. This year EA's lined things up and knocked the ball down the fairway straight and true.
  • 80 Playstation Official Magazine UK This golfing great's finally close to its best again. [May 2011, p.118]
  • 6.1 User Score Based on 27 user reviews.
  • 65 Armchair Empire In the end, The Masters is, in the purest sense, a golf simulator. It does not require extensive practice, nor does it have enough to entice people who have no interest in the sport. For those that do, however, your devotion will be greatly rewarded.
  • 80 Xbox World 360 Magazine UK Even pros will struggle to outsmart the caddy, but every other change is for the better. [June 2011, p.99]
  • 6.1 User Score Based on 11 user reviews.
  • 88 Game Informer Making structural changes can go a long way for a game. Tiger 12 certainly does this, but there are still a couple hiccups that get in the way. This year's model is the best on the console, and it's that way because of what it's using from the other versions – namely the PGA Tour structure and the Masters. But like a local pro playing on the same greens as Tiger, it can't keep up the pace shot for shot.
  • 80 GameSpot Tiger Woods 12 for the Wii remains the golf sim of choice for motion-controller fans because of its accurate swing mechanics and the addition of the legendary Masters.
  • 82 Multiplayer.it Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters confirms all the strengths of the series, with accurate controls (thanks to the MotionPlus attachment) and lots of game modes.
  • 90 Official Nintendo Magazine UK Superb golf. [May 2011, p.93]

Theatres in Moscow

Cultural life of Moscow city is various and rich! Operas, ballets, symphonic concerts... Russian composers have created some of the most beautiful classical music. Russian classical music is very popular in Moscow. It is performed in many beautiful historical venues. Do not forget to include a visit to a concert hall in your itinerary when you are planning your stay in Moscow! And do it in advance.

There are almost no restrictions on dress code in Russian theatres. Visitors may wear jeans and sports shoes, they may have a backpack with them. Only shorts are not allowed.

A typical feature of Russian theatre – visitors are bringing a lot of flowers which they present to their favorite performers after the show.

Here are some practical advices where to go and how to buy tickets.

The Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the oldest, the most famous and popular opera and ballet theatre in Russia. The word “Bolshoi” means “big” in Russian. You can buy a ticket online in advance, 2-3 months before the date of performance on the official website . Prices for famous ballets are high: 6-8 thousand rubles for a seat in stalls. Tickets to operas are cheaper: you can get a good seat for 4-5 thousand rubles. Tickets are cheaper for daytime performances and performances on the New Stage. The New Stage is situated in the light-green building to the left of the Bolshoi's main building. The quality of operas and ballets shown on the New Stage is excellent too. However, you should pay attention that many seats of the Bolshoi’s Old and New Stages have limited visibility . If you want to see the Bolshoi’s Old Stage but all tickets are sold out, you can order a tour of the theatre. You can book such a tour on the official website.

If you want, following Russian tradition, to give flowers to the performers at the end of the show, in the Bolshoi flowers should be presented via special staff who collects these flowers in advance.

In August the Bolshoi is closed.

The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre

This theatre is noteworthy. On one hand, it offers brilliant classical opera and ballet performances. On the other hand, it is an experimental venue for modern artists. You can check the program and buy tickets online here http://stanmus.com/ . If you are opera lover, get a ticket to see superstar Hibla Gerzmava . The theatre has a very beautiful historic building and a stage with a good view from every seat. Tickets are twice cheaper than in the Bolshoi.

The Novaya Opera

“Novaya” means “New” in Russian. This opera house was founded in 1991 by a famous conductor Eugene Kolobov. Its repertoire has several directions: Russian and Western classics, original shows and divertissements, and operas of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is very popular with Muscovites for excellent quality of performances, a comfortable hall, a beautiful Art Nouveau building and a historic park Hermitage, which is situated right next to it. You can buy tickets online here http://www.novayaopera.ru/en .

Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center

The Opera Center has become one of the best theatrical venues in Moscow. It was founded in 2002 by great diva Galina Vishnevskaya. Nowadays its artistic director is Olga Rostropovich, daughter of Galina Vishnevskaya and her husband Mstislav Rostropovich, great cellist and conductor. Not only best young opera singers perform here, but also world music stars do; chamber and symphonic concerts, theatrical productions and musical festivals take place here. You can see what is on the program here http://opera-centre.ru/theatre . Unfortunately “booking tickets online” is available in Russian only. If you need help, you can contact us at and we can book a ticket for you.

Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and The Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory

These are two major concert halls for symphonic music in Moscow. Both feature excellent acoustics, impressive interior, various repertoire and best performers. You can check the program here http://meloman.ru/calendar/ . You need just to switch to English. Booking tickets online is available only for owners of Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian phone numbers. If you need help, you can contact us and we can book a ticket for you.

Moscow International Performing Arts Center (MIPAC)

This modern and elegant concert hall houses performances of national and foreign symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo instrumentalists, opera singers, ballet dancers, theatre companies, jazz bands, variety and traditional ensembles. Actually, it has three concert halls placed on three different levels and having separate entrances. The President of MIPAC is People’s Artist of the USSR Vladimir Spivakov, conductor of “Virtuosy Moskvy” orchestra. You can see pictures of the concert halls here http://www.mmdm.ru/en/content/halls . The program is impressive in its variety but is not translated into English. You can contact us at and we can find a performance for you.
