Inside the Titanic II, a close replica of the 1912 Titanic cruise liner that could set sail in 2022

The ocean liner spanned 882 feet in length and was 106 feet wide.

Compare that to the largest cruise ship today, and it's dwarfed in comparison. The Royal Caribbean's gargantuan "floating city" Symphony of the Seas runs 1,188 feet in length and spans 215 feet across at its widest part.

On April 10, 1912, the Titanic set sail on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, across the Atlantic Ocean to New York with 2,200 passengers and crew aboard.

But five days later, the ship hit an iceberg, its jagged underwater edges slicing a gash in the side of the Titanic and causing it to sink in less than three hours. About 1,500 people perished in the catastrophe.

The shipwreck has since gone down in history and in popular culture as one of the most famous and tragic disasters on the seas.

But now, an Australian businessman is recreating the famed Titanic — and the new ship could set sail across the Atlantic by 2022 for 2,400 passengers.

Dubbed the Titanic ll, the new vessel will be a close replica of the original Titanic, right down to the architecture, cabin layout, class categories, restaurants, dining rooms, and length.

The reimagining of the infamous ship is thanks to Clive Palmer, who shelled out $500 million for the project.

The project was initially announced in 2013 but suffered a series of financial setbacks.

But now, the Titanic ll is on track to set sail in 2022, thanks to Palmer and his company Blue Star Line ...

... which is a nod to company behind the original Titanic vessel, White Star Line.

"We want to recreate, in Titanic ll, the whole experience, the wonder that was in Titanic, and I think we can do that," Palmer said in a Blue Star Line interview.

The ship would sail along the same route as its sunken predecessor, from Southampton, England, to New York, which is about an 11-hour trip if you travel by plane.

The first class cabins were spacious and were the priciest accommodations, so more affluent and prominent figures resided in these quarters.

Passengers who purchase first class tickets aboard the Titanic ll would have something similar.

A canopied bed, vanity, and a desk would be included.

There was a reception area for the first class passengers aboard the Titanic in 1912.

The iconic Titanic staircase was also located in this first-class section.

And yes, the new ship would feature a replica of the grand Titanic staircase beneath a domed skylight.

No word yet if a meet-and-greet with DiCaprio or Winslet is included at the bottom, though.

But if it's not, you could still re-live the decadence of that time period ...

... because each passenger aboard the Titanic ll would be given outfits circa 1912 to truly immerse themselves in that cultural era.

Ladies would receive bustles for their dresses, and men would be able to wear tuxedoes, according to Palmer.

A heated pool was installed on the original Titanic. It was the second pool of its kind, the first being constructed on the vessel's sister ship, Olympic.

The Titanic ll would have a similar pool, porthole windows included.

Though its size may be a little small for the Titanic ll's future 2,400 passengers.

The 1912 Titanic also came outfitted with a gym.

The gym had an electric camel, an electric horse, and cycling and rowing machines, all of which would be included in the new vessel.

Though 21st century gym-goers would likely prefer to don yoga pants en lieu of corsets and floor-length dresses.

A squash, or racquetball, court will also be available to passengers aboard the Titanic ll. Passengers aboard the original Titanic could play racquetball for two shillings, or 50 cents, an hour.

First class male passengers had access to a smoke room aboard the Titanic in 1912.

There would also be one aboard the Titanic ll.

The original smoke room was reserved only for men. It's not yet clear if the smoking room aboard the Titanic ll will have the same restrictions.

The Titanic's designer, Thomas Andrews, is said to have been last seen in the smoke room. James Cameron's 1997 film "Titanic" reflects that and alludes that this is where Andrews went down with the ship.

For four shillings, or $1, first class passengers had access to Turkish Bath suites, which included cooling rooms, temperature rooms, steam rooms, and more.

The Titanic ll would have the same features.

The Moorish-style amenities would be available for guests to enjoy.

Modern safety and navigation systems are just one of the ship's upgrades from its predecessor — the Titanic ll would feature a sturdier welded hull instead of a riveted one.

And, most importantly, the Titanic ll will have enough life jackets and lifeboats for every person onboard.

The original Titanic was famously equipped with just 20 lifeboats — enough for only one third of the ship's occupants.

The Titanic ll will have a new safety deck to hold the appropriate number of lifeboats.

It will have the same maximum speed as its predecessor of 24 knots and would feature a larger rudder and a modern diesel engine instead of steam boilers.

And an additional deck would also be constructed that looks over the bow, a feature the original Titanic did not have that could have helped conductors spot the iceberg it was speeding toward.

An Australian businessman has undertaken a $500 million project building a replica of the ill-fated 1912 Titanic cruise ship.
Announced in 2012, the design of the vessel, dubbed Titanic ll , will be a close replica of the original — down to the dimensions, architecture, and the layout.
The ship will be able to accommodate 2,400 passengers and will feature modern day navigation technology and safety systems, including an adequate number of lifeboats and life jackets for passengers.
Ticket prices are not yet available, but the ship could set sail as soon as 2022, USA Today reports.
In February 2020, the Titanic II Facebook page announced that more information would be coming later this year, advising fans to "stay tuned."

The Titanic II project isn’t sunk yet, but can it float?

Australian billionaire Clive Palmer has revived his pet project, a working replica of the doomed cruise liner Titanic, after a favourable court ruling. But given the sketchy details around the project and Palmer’s history of over-reaching, should Titanic II be taken seriously?

Back in 2015, it looked like one of the more eccentric ideas in the history of shipbuilding was going to sink without a trace. The Titanic II project, the brainchild of billionaire Australian businessman and politician Clive Palmer, was announced in 2012 and aimed to create an authentic replica of the original Titanic cruise liner, which sank after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York in April 1912, with more than 1,500 passengers and crew losing their lives.

The cruise liner, which was due to make its first voyage in 2016, was planned as a detailed replica of the original vessel, with impeccably recreated interiors and hull form, albeit slightly larger than the original and incorporating modern safety technologies and standards, including more than enough lifeboats and rafts to evacuate all passengers and crew in case history should repeat itself.

While the media clamoured at the ambition of the idea and sceptical commentators wondered if it was anything more than a publicity stunt from a businessman with a history of ego-driven bad ideas , Palmer appeared confident that the vessel would be built. Blue Star Line – its name harking back to the White Star Line that built the original Titanic – was established to steward the A$700m project to completion, and reputable contractors such as Deltamarin and Lloyd’s Register Marine were brought on board to create and review designs for the ship. CSC Jinling shipyard in China was mooted as the site for the construction of the vessel.

“Millions have dreamt of sailing on her, seeing her in port and experiencing her unique majesty,” Palmer said in 2012. “ Titanic II will be the ship where those dreams come true.”

Three years later, the dream had soured.

Deadlines had already slipped to the extent that the 2016 launch date was already out of reach, but in 2015 a dispute over mining royalty payments between Palmer’s company Mineralogy and Chinese firm Citic reportedly drained the project of funds, putting it on indefinite hold.

The revived Titanic II project

In September 2018, Titanic II seemed to experience a miraculous revival. The Supreme Court of Western Australia ruled in 2017 that Citic was obliged to pay nearly $150m in unpaid royalties, which apparently left enough in the pot to bring Palmer’s passion project back to life.

In late 2018, Blue Star Line announced that Deltamarin had recommenced work on the project, and in December V.Ships Leisure was contracted to support the development of the build.

“We are looking forward to assisting Blue Star Line with our expertise in project support, new build supervision and ship management,’’ said V.Ships Leisure director Per Bjornsen. “This process showcases the full spectrum of ways in which ship management can add value from the very beginning in the management of a cruise vessel, long before the first steel is even cut.”

Palmer also made headlines last year when he announced that the European headquarters would be established in Paris rather than London due to concerns over Brexit, and that the European operation would be overseen by the somewhat worryingly named Clive Mensink.

Should Titanic II be taken seriously?

Even if Palmer’s Titanic II appears to have a tentative green light again, there’s little reason to believe that this project will ever see the light of day. Conflicting media reports over basic information such as whether or not construction on the ship has actually started, and where it will be built – some reports have said construction is already underway , while others have noted that the upcoming build is expected to take place in China , and still others have quoted Blue Star Line as saying the ship will likely be built in the Northern hemisphere .

Blue Star Line is doing little to provide clarity on key details, and appears to have deleted from its website many news releases quoted in media reports about the project. Even a widely-reported new launch date of 2022 was contradicted by the company, which confirmed to The Guardian in October that no dates had been announced, no construction had taken place and no shipbuilders had been contracted.

Beyond the lack of credible confirmation that the project is remotely ready to move forward, there are reasons to doubt that even a ship outfitted exactly as Palmer has described – from the recreated gymnasium to the ballrooms and Turkish baths – would actually find a market. No information on pricing is available, but Blue Star Line seems set on reviving period-specific details that are completely out-of-step with modern cruise expectations.

Air conditioning will apparently be added, but there will be no televisions or internet access, with the idea being that passengers who have no doubt spent thousands will be happier dressing up in period outfits, which will reportedly be provided in every room.

Second and third-class cabins circa 1912 will be incorporated, with narrow bunk beds and wash basins replacing the bathrooms and sea views that modern cruise customers expect, despite Palmer’s insistence is that third class is “where the fun will be”. Perhaps he imagines the cheerful working-class dancing scenes with Jack and Rose from the 1997 movie. By the by, Palmer has also said ‘Palmer Pictures’ is looking to outdo James Cameron’s classic with a Titanic movie of his own, a romance filmed onboard Titanic II .

The ultimate fate of the project remains to be seen. There are certainly viable ways of reviving the Titanic as a non-functional museum or centrepiece tourist attraction, as a theme park in China’s Sichuan province is attempting to do. But with Palmer’s history of over-reaching and the sketchy details of the build, it’s impossible to escape the conclusion that this is the vanity project of a billionaire Titanic obsessive looking to recreate a bygone relic of colonial elegance, without much thought put into whether the rest of the world is as interested as he is. Titanic II might not be sunk yet, but it would be a minor miracle if this project turns out to be seaworthy.

A replica of the Titanic could embark on its maiden voyage by 2022 and eventually follow its doomed predecessor's original route from Southampton to New York, the company behind the "Titanic II" project says. Clive Palmer, an Australian businessman and chairman of Blue Star Line, announced the revival of the project in September following years of delays due to financial constraints.

The new Titanic, which will cost about $500 million to build, could hold 2,400 passengers and 900 crew members. Palmer told Cruise Arabia and Africa that the launch date for the ship had been pushed back from 2018 to 2022, 110 years after the original hit an iceberg and fell to the ocean floor. If all goes according to plan, Palmer said the ship will travel from Dubai to Southampton before making the journey across the Atlantic.

"The ship will follow the original journey, carrying passengers from Southampton to New York," Palmer said in a statement last month. "But she will also circumnavigate the globe, inspiring and enchanting people while attracting unrivaled attention, intrigue and mystery in every port she visits."

Blue Star Line did not immediately respond to a request for additional details on the project.

The project was initially announced in 2012. After myriad financial problems, the plan was suspended in 2015 and restarted in September.

"Blue Star Line will create an authentic Titanic experience, providing passengers with a ship that has the same interiors and cabin layout as the original vessel, while integrating modern safety procedures, navigation methods and 21st century technology to produce the highest level of luxurious comfort," Palmer said in his statement.

Palmer intends to make Titanic II's maiden voyage a two-week journey from Singapore to Dubai, followed by a trip to Southampton, where it would begin weekly trips between the U.S. and the U.K. during the summer months. The European headquarters of Blue Star Line will likely be in Paris, Palmer announced Monday , citing Britain's decision to leave the European Union.

Its namesake famously sank in the Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912, after hitting an iceberg. But in a few years, fans of "Titanic" the film could have to opportunity to ride in the same ship where people fell in love with Rose and Jack.

"Millions have dreamt of sailing on her, seeing her in port and experiencing her unique majesty," Palmer said. "Titanic ll will be the ship where those dreams come true."

A replica of "the ship of dreams" -- also known as Titanic -- will sail the high seas in the year 2022.

An announcement about the luxury Titanic II was first made in 2013, but work was suspended due to financial constraints. Now that those financial matters have been resolved, building has recommenced on the vessel, according to a media release from Blue Star Line.

The launch has been a dream of Palmer, an Australian business magnate, for years.

On its maiden voyage on April 10, 1912, the ship left Southampton, England, with more than 2,200 people aboard on its way to New York City. The billionaire mining magnate Clive Palmer has vowed to build a vessel “far, far superior than the original” as he unveiled designs for his Titanic II project – again.

Palmer hired a room at Sydney Opera House on Wednesday to let the world know his vision of building a to-scale replica of the doomed ocean liner would finally come to be.

Yet after distributing a press release to journalists in which he promised his company Blue Star Line would construct “the ship of love and the ultimate in style and luxury”, Palmer acknowledged he hadn’t yet secured a shipyard.

It was almost 10 years to the day since Palmer held a very similar press conference at London’s Ritz Hotel to “launch” his Titanic II dream.

Asked by a reporter at that event if the project was a hoax or a publicity stunt, Palmer said that was “bullshit, really” and he had “enough money to build the Titanic 10 times over”.

Since then, Palmer has served a term as a federal MP, deregistered and then revived a political party and spent millions of dollars on various legal challenges , tourism ventures and expensive election campaigns .

Work on the Titanic II was suspended in 2015 after a payment dispute between one of Palmer’s companies and the Chinese company Citic starved it of funds. Palmer re-announced the project in 2018 with a proposed sail date of 2022.

On Wednesday, Palmer blamed the Covid pandemic for the delays. He said people should believe him this time because “I’ve got more money now”.

Palmer, who turns 70 later this month, stood in front of Sydney Harbour and suggested he could die having “done nothing”.

“So I could do the Titanic. I’m gonna do it,” he said. “It’s a lot more fun to do the Titanic than it is to sit at home and count my money.

“All you need to be happy, I’ve found in my life, is to have someone that loves you, somewhere to sleep at night and enough for a good meal.

“Beyond that, the rest is an illusion – it’s like playing golf.”

Palmer said he was confident he could secure a shipyard in time for construction on the vessel start early next year, with the ship’s maiden voyage from Southampton to New York – replicating the ill-fated 1912 voyage of the original – scheduled for June 2027.

He said tenders for construction would go out in June, with contracts signed by December. He estimated the 56,000-tonne ship would cost between $500m and $1bn.

The Finnish-based ship design and marine engineering company Deltamarin was among the companies that supported the project, Palmer said.

While there was no real ship in sight – at least, not yet – journalists were shown a five-minute video of detailed 3D renders of what all nine decks of the Titanic II would look like.

Palmer said he was bringing in some of “the best designers in the world for cruise shipping”. The ship would have the same interiors and cabin layout as the original vessel, complete with a ballroom, swimming pool and Turkish baths.

Set to Johann Strauss’s The Blue Danube and featuring CGI animations of people dressed in period attire from the early 1900s, the video detailed the ship’s technical specifications, including a “Lifeboat Overview”.

The real RMS Titanic struck an iceberg partway through its maiden voyage across the Atlantic and sank on 15 April 1912, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 1,500 passengers and crew.

The story was mythologised with the release of James Cameron’s hit romantic film in 1997 starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as star-crossed lovers Jack and Rose.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday, Palmer said Jack and Rose’s love story was “one that touches the hearts of everybody”.

“The Titanic [II] we hope can act as a catalyst to reinvigorate some of those values that we’ve got, which will hopefully lead to peace.”

NEW YORK — Australian billionaire Clive Palmer unveiled plans Tuesday for construction of Titanic II, a cruise ship designed as a "full-scale re-creation" of the Titanic, which sank in the Atlantic Ocean in April 1912.

Displaying a blueprint for the Titanic II at a press conference aboard the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, Palmer announced that the ship will be built in China and begin carrying passengers in the third quarter of 2016.

Palmer, who refused to divulge the cost of building the ship, said "the Titanic was a ship of dreams," and "the Titanic II will be the ship where dreams come true."

The Australian businessman, who owns an Australian mining company and other businesses, said he has received an overwhelming response from prospective passengers who want to travel on Titanic II. He predicted that it "will be a real financial bonanza" so successful that he will "have to build Titanic III."

Some Titanic and cruise-ship experts doubt the Titanic II, which Palmer says will regularly sail across the North Atlantic, will be able to attract enough passengers after its maiden voyage. Some also question whether the new cruise ship desecrates the memory of those who died on the Titanic.

The Titanic II will be built 883 feet long – 3 inches longer than the original Titanic– and weigh 55,800 gross tons, according to Palmer. It will carry a maximum of 2,435 passengers and 900 crew members, and include a gymnasium, Turkish baths, a squash court, a swimming pool, a theater and a casino.

Its first voyage is scheduled to be from Shanghai to Southampton, England, and then on to New York.

The Titanic — the largest and most luxurious cruise ship of its time — departed from Southampton on its maiden voyage to New York in 1912 and made two stops in Europe before striking an iceberg several hundred miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. More than 1,500 people aboard died after the collision.

The Titanic II, which will be built by a state-owned Chinese company, CSC Jinling Shipyard, will honor the memories of those who died and survived on the Titanic, Palmer said. The Titanic was operated by the White Star Line, and Palmer's cruise company is called Blue Star Line.

Like the original ship, there will no TVs aboard and probably no Internet service, he says.

The press conference was held on an aircraft carrier in the Hudson River near where the Titanic was expected to dock in 1912 and next to another ill-fated form of transport, the supersonic Concorde.

Timing of the announcement for the unveiling of Titanic II wasn't smooth.

Palmer originally scheduled the unveiling of his plans at six kick-off events in December, but they were postponed because of the "devastation caused in New York and along the East Coast by Hurricane Sandy," which struck last October.

This month, the cruise ship industry received a black eye after a fire broke out on the Carnival Triumph, knocking out power and causing five days of hardship for 4,200 passengers until the ship was towed to shore.

Michael Driscoll, the editor of the industry newsletter Cruise Week , is skeptical about the future of Titanic II in the aftermath of the Carnival Triumph fire and last year's shipwreck of the Costa Concordia off the coast of Tuscany. The Costa Concordia slammed into a jagged reef and capsized, and 32 people were killed.

"Given all the safety concerns the industry has faced over the past 14 months — especially with Costa Concordia — such a ship would appear to have very limited appeal in this era," Driscoll says. "Themed cruises in general and even one-off re-creations of Titanic sailings in particular have proven popular in this business, but those thrive because they are done infrequently, not on a year-round basis."

Driscoll says he's been told by travel agents that Titanic II will have "very limited viability with the North American market."

Bad weather and big waves pose problems for trans-Atlantic sailings in winter, and the Titanic II "would appear to have no appeal" in regions with warmer weather, he says.

"Titanic II is a curiosity and may have a draw as a floating hotel, but the idea of spending close to a week at sea on a vessel built around such a thin premise is seen as a stretch, at least by many within the industry," Driscoll says.

Titanic expert J. Joseph Edgette, professor emeritus of education at Widener University in Chester, Pa., questions whether cruise ship passengers will continue to book Titanic II "once the initial hype is over."

He says the Titanic's primary purposes were to carry mail and cargo across the Atlantic, and it was a means of transportation for European and American passengers. In contrast, Titanic II will solely be a cruise ship, he says.

Edgette, who is also folklorist emeritus at Widener, says a cruise ship named Titanic II is "a little tacky," and there is a maritime tradition of not naming a ship after one lost at sea.

Some people may not want to travel on it because of the tragedy suffered by its predecessor or a belief it would be disrespectful to those who died on the original ship, Edgette says.

Brad Matsen, author of Titanic's Last Secrets , says "some people" like Palmer "have too much money."

There was "an immense amount of hubris in the construction of the Titanic," and that may be the case in the building of Titanic II, he says.

Matsen says the story of the Titanic still holds the "public's fascination," but he doesn't know why anyone would name a ship after it.

"There were a lot of people who died on the Titanic," Matsen says. "That's what gets lost on this."

Helen Benziger, the great-granddaughter of Molly Brown, who survived the Titanic sinking, says she is "thrilled" that the Titanic II is being built.

Benziger said at the press conference that Palmer "has assured me that everything possible has been done to honor the passengers who perished and the passengers who survived."

Paul Kurzman, whose great-grandparents, Isidor and Ida Straus, died on the Titanic, says he has "no problem" with the construction of Titanic II. Isidor served in Congress and owned R.H. Macy & Co..

He says he thinks his grandparents would also not have felt offended.

"I don't think they would have had any problem whatsoever, as long as the Titanic II steers clear of icebergs," says Kurzman, a professor of social work at Hunter College in New York.

Karen Kamuda, vice president of The Titanic Historical Society in Indian Orchard, Mass., says a new cruise ship modeled after the original Titanic is a positive development.

"The Titanic was a piece of history and a symbol of an era," Kamuda says. "As we get farther away from that time, people want to feel that part of history."

Kamuda says it's not insensitive to build a ship today modeled after one involved in a tragedy.

"I'm glad people are interested in history," she says. "If a symbol like this makes people reflect on an era that's past, I don't have a problem with that."

Julie Hedgepeth Williams, whose great uncle, Albert Caldwell, survived the Titanic sinking, says she often spoke with Albert about the tragedy. She is author of A Rare Titanic Family .

She says Albert, who died in 1992, would have wanted to travel on the Titanic II.

"He would have loved to have seen it," says Williams, a professor of journalism at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala. "He would have found a new ship intriguing. He always wanted to see the Titanic again."

An Australian billionaire is reviving his dream of building the Titanic II, a replica of the infamous ship that sank in 1912, CNN reports.

Clive Palmer’s project stalled out during two previous efforts, the most recent coming during the pandemic.

Palmer shared, “We are very pleased to announce that after unforeseen global delays, we have reengaged with partners to bring the dream of Titanic ll to life. Let the journey begin,” per CNN .

Forbes reports that Palmer is planning for the Titanic II to take its maiden voyage in June 2027. It will follow the same route as the Titanic, setting off from Southampton, England, on the path to New York.

Blue Star Line explains the features that will be found on the Titanic II will mimic the original Titanic design:

Passengers can choose between first-class, second-class or third-class cabins.
The deck will include Edwardian era games such as shuffleboard and deck quoits.
A pool and gymnasium will be available to passengers.
Meals provided will replicate original Edwardian era dishes.

Changes in regulations since the Titanic

When the Titanic sank, only around 700 passengers survived and more than 1,500 died, CNN reports.

The Titanic was equipped with only enough lifeboats for half of the passengers. Many people thought the ship was unsinkable, so safety was not a top concern.

Vox explains that the lack of lifeboats was due to the belief that the telegraph would get a distress signal out to nearby ships and the lifeboats would only need to be used as ferry vessels to transport passengers before it completely sank.

That was how an older ship, the RMS Republic, was able to save all its passengers in 1909 before it sank, according to Vox.

CNN reports that after the Titanic disaster, an international standard was created to ensure the safety of future ships, known as the SOLAS Convention, or International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea.

The convention has been updated since then, but it was originally created after the Titanic sank, according to the International Maritime Organization .

The SOLAS Convention has created modern regulations to hopefully prevent any Titanic-like disasters:

Ice patrols are now a requirement in the north Atlantic.
If a passenger ship receives report of ice, they must slow down or alter course.
All passenger ships must have a public address system.
Lifeboats must be fully or partially covered to prevent hypothermia and must account for 125% of the number of passengers.
Crew members must undergo lifeboat training drills, and lifeboat drills (and fire drills) must be held weekly.
Distress alerts are sent via satellites, and all ships are required to have someone watching for potential distress signals.
Helicopters and evacuation chutes are now used on ships in addition to lifeboats.
All ships must have immersion suits on hand.

For more than a decade, Australian billionaire Clive Palmer has been the driving force behind plans to build Titanic II — a replica of the ill-fated ship that sank in 1912 with more than 2,200 people on board.

Only about 700 survived, making it the world’s most disastrous voyage.

More than a century after the Titanic went down, the world remains drawn to its story.

The tragedy inspired James Cameron’s Oscar-winning 1997 blockbuster “Titanic,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, and has fascinated amateur explorers for decades.

One such mission ended in tragedy last June, when all five passengers aboard the Titan submersible were killed when the vessel suffered a catastrophic implosion en route to the wreckage.

Six years later, he relaunched the project during a recent press briefing at Sydney Opera House, against the backdrop of the city’s famed harbor.

The question is: Why?

“It’s a lot more fun to do the Titanic than it is to sit at home and count my money,” Palmer reportedly told local media.

Palmer, who made his fortune from mining, remains undaunted by Titanic’s calamitous streak. He first launched plans for Titanic II in 2012, and again in 2018, but plans were sidelined during the Covid epidemic.

When he first floated his dream of building a more buoyant version of the Titanic more than a decade ago, the popular view was that he was rich and eccentric enough to do it.

But headwinds of the pandemic hit, and the multimillion-dollar project was put on hold as ports closed and passengers reassessed their risk appetite for being quarantined at sea.

Now that the pandemic has passed, and cruise ships are once again at sea, Palmer, who is chairman of the Blue Star Line company behind the project, said the time is right to revive his Titanic dream.

“We are very pleased to announce that after unforeseen global delays, we have reengaged with partners to bring the dream of Titanic ll to life. Let the journey begin,’’ Palmer said in a press release.

Blue Star is soliciting proposals and plans to confirm a ship builder by the end of the year, to begin work in the first quarter of 2025.

Right now, Palmer expects the winning bidders to be based in Europe. He doesn’t believe Chinese standards are up to the task, he told reporters.

At the relaunch, his team redistributed an eight-minute video, showing the layout of the ship and how each room will look, complete with actors dressed in period costume.

Passengers will be encouraged to dress for the 1900s, but it’s not mandatory, a spokesperson said.

The ship itself will be 269 meters (833 feet) long and 32.2 meters (105 feet) wide — slightly wider than the original. Capacity will be 2,345 passengers spread across nine decks with 835 cabins. Almost half of those will be reserved for first class passengers.

Third class passengers will be treated to stew and mash at long tables in a communal dining room – as they were on the original boat – though a spokesperson said other meals will also be available for those who want a less authentic experience.

Palmer wants to replicate the Titanic – without the tragic ending. And he believes that tapping the world’s fascination for the luxury vessel will somehow bring people closer together.

“We all know how to make war. We get armies and we fund wars. People know about that. But it is a lot harder to make peace. To make peace you have got to stick with it every day. You progress inch by inch,” he said in the press release.

“Titanic ll is something that can provide peace. It can be a ship of peace between all countries of the world.

“Millions have dreamt of sailing on her, seeing her in port and experiencing her unique majesty. Titanic ll will be the ship where those dreams come true,’’ Palmer said.
