In 1987, I embarked on the adventure of a lifetime. Two years earlier, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute had discovered  Titanic  and now I co-led a 6 million dollar dive expedition to the site of the sinking.

Our team’s mission was to explore the wreckage, retrieve artifacts and film the broken remains. Standing on the slippery deck of our salvage ship, it was thrilling to hover more than 2.5 miles above the legendary  Titanic .

Our team spent 44 days at sea and the expedition dove to the site 32 times in an amazing 20 million dollar submersible. We returned with hundreds of hours of haunting ghost-like images. They formed the framework of “Return to  Titanic …Live!” a two-hour television special that I co-produced with my partner Doug Lewelyn. This special became the second highest rated live TV documentary ever.

After 30 years Titanic remains my magnificent obsession. I’ve dedicated my career to her and the 2,208 passengers and crew aboard its tragic maiden voyage. It started with TV shows and became these permanent Titanic Museum Attractions in Branson, MO and Pigeon Forge, TN.

These giant museum attractions exhibit one of the largest permanent collections of  Titanic  artifacts and memorabilia. Inside, guests enter a unique world where they can climb an exact replica of the most famous staircase— Titanic’s  hand-crafted Grand Staircase.

I want to share as closely as possible with guests what  Titanic’s  actual passengers and crew experienced aboard ship. Visitors can touch finely carved wooden inlays, grasp the wheel on the captain’s bridge, tap out messages on the ship’s wireless, feel an iceberg’s chill, stroll decks and galleries and listen to stories told by real survivors. I think of it as “Living Theatre” with guests as part of the experience. Plus it offers a realistic, interactive educational experience for students of all ages.

Twenty-five years after Titanic hit the big screen, becoming the highest-grossing movie of its time, Zoey Goto pays a visit to Tennessee’s quirky Titanic-shaped museum and discovers that some of the ship’s most intriguing tales still remain submerged.

In most towns, a gigantic replica of the Titanic ship towering above the roadside would be pretty easy to spot. But Pigeon Forge, in the foothills of East Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountains, isn’t most towns.

Driving up to the Titanic Museum , the highway soon dissolves into a neon-lit carousel of jaw-dropping attractions, just crying out for your attention. There’s the upside-down Wonderworks Museum, perhaps thrown by nearby King Kong, who’s waving from a replica Empire State Building outside the Hollywood Wax Museum. Next up is a kitschy hotel that celebrates Christmas every single day of the year, followed by arcades shaped as regal castles and a replica of Alcatraz prison. Pigeon Forge is a town that does left field by the shipload.

titanic replica tour

Despite the jostling competition from its neighbours, when I finally locate Pigeon Forge’s Titanic Museum, which opened in 2010 at a cost of $25 million (£18.4m), it still packs a punch. At half the size of the original doomed ocean liner, the boat-shaped attraction sits in a reflective pool of water, complete with a 30-foot (9m) tall imitation iceberg; which, bizarrely enough, collapsed in 2021 causing minor injuries to a few unfortunate visitors and further adding to the mythology of the cursed vessel.

It’s been almost 110 years since the tragic night when RMS Titanic hit an iceberg with 2,208 passengers on board, 1,496 of which sadly perished, and 25 years since Leonardo DiCaprio drew Kate Winslet like one of his French girls in the Oscar-winning Titanic film. But the ship continues to hold a distinctive place in our collective imagination.

titanic replica tour

There are now a handful of permanent and temporary Titanic exhibitions scattered across the globe, including Pigeon Forge’s sister museum in Branson, Missouri, and each attraction offers its own take on the harrowing tale.

At Tennessee’s Titanic, the museum workers are dressed in period costume and their enthusiasm for their characters is palpable. “We just really enjoy telling the stories,” says George at the museum’s entrance, as she grants me permission to board, dressed as a maid with a starched white apron and bonnet.

titanic replica tour

On an average day she welcomes over 2,000 visitors through these doors, who come to see the 400 Titanic-related artefacts on display, “many of which we buy directly from the families, so we know the personal stories behind each item, which I think adds to the appeal”. George hands me a boarding pass with the details of an actual passenger from 1912 – Emma Schabert, a 35-year-old New Yorker – whose fate I’ll learn later.

Venturing inside, my audio tour offers a deep dive into this treasure-trove collection, valued at over $4 million (£2.9m). Displays include passenger Selena Cook’s lucky tooth in a box (it worked, she survived!) and a section dedicated to the dogs on board, three of which made it safely to shore, miraculously.

titanic replica tour

There’s an entire room filled with beautiful, sepia-toned photos by Father Francis Browne, who boarded in Southampton, England and disembarked in Queenstown, Ireland, along with his camera brimming with rare images of the “unsinkable” ship and its patrons. The 30,000 square foot (2,787sq m) museum also includes a replica of a third-class stairwell flooding with water, which claustrophobics should probably swerve.

READ MORE:  Secrets of the Titanic – life onboard the world's most famous ship

On a lighter note, there are plenty of interactive exhibits for kids, including shovelling coal into the engine’s fire pit and plunging fingers into the icy cold waters below. During the pandemic, virtual school tours of the museum accelerated its educational program and there’s since been an uptick in younger visitors.

titanic replica tour

The jewel in the museum’s crown is the elegant Grand Staircase, a meticulous copy of the first-class sweeping oak staircase with its linoleum flooring – “it was the height of luxury at the time” a nearby captain reassures me – framed under the twinkling glow of an elaborate dome ceiling.

Gliding up the staircase, I wander through handsome first-class staterooms filled with sumptuous four-poster beds and finely carved panelled walls, following the faint sound of ragtime music, only to discover Bill, or Captain Bill Young as he prefers, tinkling the keys of his baby grand piano in a room dedicated to the eight members of the Titanic’s orchestra.

titanic replica tour

Captain Bill Young is a daily fixture at the museum, performing “the sounds that were around at the time, so it’s a mixture of classical, folk and Irish songs. Plus occasionally the Beatles or Elton John, just to keep things interesting!” He laughs as he picks up the fiddle and races through a jig at lightning speed. “You know, those musicians showed such bravery, they kept on playing even as the ship went down,” he adds quietly.

Striking a balance between respecting the human tragedy at the heart of the Titanic story and creating an engaging tourist attraction, was always going to be a tough gig. But Tennessee’s Titanic Museum does an admirable job of treading this wafer-thin line, give or take the odd  ‘tea-tanic’ tea infuser selling for $9.99 in the gift shop.

So what became of Emma Schabert, whose boarding pass I carried in my hand? In the ultimate room, I’m relieved to discover that she was mercifully spared a watery grave by escaping in lifeboat 11. She went on to marry a baron and live a colourful life in Italy, before finally dying of natural causes at the ripe old age of 84. It’s an unknown tale fit for a Hollywood blockbuster.

World’s Largest LEGO Replica of the Titanic on Display in Pigeon Forge

LEGO fans will definitely want to stop by Pigeon Forge’s Titanic Museum Attraction during their next vacation! Throughout the 2018 season, the museum will display a replica of the RMS Titanic that was built entirely out of LEGOs. Made from 56,000 bricks, the 26-foot long ship is the largest LEGO replica of the Titanic in the world. The Titanic Museum Attraction is the first and only place in the United States where the LEGO ship can be seen.

This incredible work of art was built by Brynjar Karl Birgisson, an Icelandic boy who was only 10 years old when he constructed the ship. Brynjar, who has autism, found building the LEGO ship to be a transformative experience. When he began the project, Brynjar could hardly communicate with others. Now, Brynjar gives interviews and presentations all around the world, sharing his story and educating audiences about autism.

Origins of the LEGO Titanic

Diagnosed with autism when he was 5 years old, Brynjar Karl found himself “trapped behind a fog.” The words he wanted to say wouldn’t come out correctly, he found it difficult to make friends, and he felt lonely and isolated.

Brynjar spent most of his free time pursuing individual projects, with LEGO building and learning about ships being his two favorite activities. Around the age of 10, Brynjar became fascinated with the RMS Titanic. He read about the Titanic, drew pictures of the Titanic, put together a Titanic jigsaw puzzle, and even baked a Titanic cake!

One day, Brynjar envisioned an incredibly ambitious project. He wanted to build a model of the Titanic using LEGOS that would be completely to scale, assuming a LEGO man was the size of an average passenger. As Brynjar explains it, “I just had to build that amazing ship, and there was not a doubt in my mind that I could do it.”

How the LEGO Titanic Was Built

With help from his grandfather (who is an engineer), Brynjar downloaded an original blueprint of the RMS Titanic and scaled the designs down to LEGO size. Their calculations indicated that it would take 56,000 LEGO bricks to build the ship. In order to obtain all of the bricks he needed, Brynjar and his mom launched an online crowdfunding campaign. Together, they raised around $6,000 along with donations of old LEGO bricks.

Because the ship was going to be 26 feet long, Brynjar built his model in a warehouse that belonged to the main LEGO wholesaler in Iceland. Every day after school, Brynjar would come to the warehouse to work on his project. It ultimately took 700 hours over 11 months to complete the project. You can see Brynjar working on the ship in this video from the Discovery Channel:

Although having autism has been difficult for Brynjar, when it came to building the LEGO Titanic, it was actually helpful. Brynjar’s obsessive tendencies and affinity for repetitive tasks were an asset as he completed this monumental undertaking, and he has called these qualities his “autistic X factor.” Of course, the driving force behind Brynjar’s success was also his incredible determination and positive attitude.

LEGO Titanic on Tour

Brynjar and his LEGO Titanic have traveled the world, with exhibits in Sweden, Norway, Germany, and now Pigeon Forge. In an interview with the Titanic Museum Attraction , Brynjar explains what this life-changing experience has meant to him:

“This whole journey has helped me out of my autistic fog….It has given me confidence. When I started the building process I had a person helping me in school in every step that I took, but today, I’m studying without any support. My grades have risen and my classmates consider me as their peer. I have had the opportunity to travel and explore and meet wonderful people.”

How Branson's Titanic Museum honors the triumph and tragedy of the world's most famous ship

Tarah Chieffi

Editor's Note

As I stood surrounded by photographs of the musicians who bravely played on as the Titanic sunk deeper and deeper toward her icy fate, I felt myself fighting back tears. The live pianist had paused briefly — leaving space for me and others in the room to reflect on the moment's significance.

It's been more than 100 years since the Titanic sunk while en route from South Hampton, England, to New York City. Still, I felt so aware of the emotions that the musicians — and the passengers they hoped to calm with their melodies — must have been feeling in those final hours that I was almost certain they were in the room with me.

titanic replica tour

This was not at all how I thought I'd feel when I paid a visit to the Titanic Museum during a family trip to Branson, Missouri.

Like many of us, I've been familiar with the history of the Titanic since elementary school. Although I found the story both tragic and fascinating, I expected to spend an hour or so looking at interesting artifacts and photos before making a requisite visit to the gift shop and moving on to our next activity. But my visit ended up being much more poignant than what I had read about in history books or seen in movies.

There are plenty of artifacts — more than 400 valued at $4.5 million, to be exact — at the Titanic Museum, given by descendants and recovered from expeditions to the wreckage. However, the attraction focuses first and foremost on the ship's survivors and fatalities, making it all the more impactful.

Here's what you need to know before you visit the Titanic Museum.

Where is the Titanic Museum?

titanic replica tour

The Titanic Museum is in Branson on 76 Country Boulevard, also known as the Branson Strip. This is where many of the town's attractions are. The area includes Branson's well-known theater district and popular tourist spots like the Aquarium at the Boardwalk, the Branson Ferris Wheel and the World's Largest Toy Museum.

It's hard to miss, as the exterior of the museum is a replica of the Titanic — iceberg, water and all.

There is a second Titanic Museum in Pigeon Forge, Tennesee, with similar displays and interactive exhibits.

How much does it cost to visit the Titanic Museum?

titanic replica tour

General-admission timed-entry tickets to the Titanic Museum cost $32 for adults and $15 for children ages 5 to 12 when purchased online in advance through the museum's website . Children ages 4 and under are free. Depending on the size of your party, you may be able to save with the Titanic Museum's Branson Family One-Day Pass. The pass is valid for two adults and up to four children; it costs $115 when purchased online.

Tickets purchased in person cost slightly more and may be unavailable if all time slots are filled.

If you are planning to visit other attractions in the area, there are a variety of combination tickets available that you can use to visit Branson's other shows and activities in Branson, including Silver Dollar City and Dolly Parton Stampede.

What is it like visiting the Titanic Museum?

titanic replica tour

When we entered the museum, we were handed a "boarding pass" with the name and description of a real-life Titanic passenger printed on it. We were instructed to keep the card with us throughout our journey, and we would find out their fate. It was interactive and personal elements like this that brought the experience to life.

titanic replica tour

Each visitor received a headset to follow along with the museum's audio tour, and there are also youth audio tour stations throughout the exhibits. Many of these were accompanied by interactive activities and quizzes that ended up being some of the highlights of the day for my kids.

Most rooms featured exhibits designed to resemble different parts of the ship. We started by learning about the Titanic's construction, crew and the planned path of her maiden voyage.

Many of the photos come from Francis Browne, a photographer and priest who was only on board for a portion of the Titanic's journey. Seeing these photos of the Titanic that depicted the voyage before tragedy struck helped set the stage for the rest of our tour.

titanic replica tour

From there, we were taken through the kitchen and boiler room. We saw menus, dishes, cookware, photos and other kitchen and dining room artifacts that showed the difference between the dining experiences of first-class and third-class passengers.

In the boiler room, we learned how hard the staff worked to keep the fires stoked, working and sleeping in shifts with only a few hours to rest before it was time to get back to work. To demonstrate just how difficult their job was, the museum had a surprisingly heavy shovel you could pick up and pretend to throw some coal into the fire.

titanic replica tour

The museum also had replicas of the different types of cabins on board the Titanic. There was such a stark contrast in the size and decor between the first- and third-class cabins, but it was the difference in cost and onboard experiences that really shocked me.

titanic replica tour

Third-class passengers often spent a year's salary just to squeeze into a tiny cabin with their entire family or total strangers if they were traveling alone. First-class passengers had spacious, well-furnished accommodations that, while obviously expensive, often did not carry the same apples-to-apples financial burden for them.

titanic replica tour

Between the third- and first-class cabin exhibits was an exact replica of the Titanic's Grand Staircase. This would have separated the ship's third- and first-class passengers; even in the museum, the atmosphere shifted as we moved to what would have been the ship's upper decks.

This was also when we further delved into the events surrounding the sinking of the Titanic.

My kids had fun sticking their hands in a tank of icy cold 28-degree water and fighting to stay upright on decks sloped to mimic different phases of the ship as it sank. But for me, it was just another example of how the museum effectively made the experience feel real and relevant.

titanic replica tour

One of the final rooms in the museum displays images from the discovery of the Titanic's wreckage and the many expeditions that have been made since.

The museum's founder, John Joslyn, made many of those voyages himself. Joslyn, who also founded the Titanic Museum in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, is not shy about his self-proclaimed obsession with the Titanic. He has completed 32 dives to the ship's remains in a submersible, bringing back photographs and artifacts from the wreckage.

titanic replica tour

Before "disembarking," we learned the fate of the passenger we had been assigned upon arrival.

Of the Titanic's 2,208 passengers, only 705 survived. Most of those were women and children. My assigned passenger was among them. Genevieve Cassebeer was one of the lucky ones, and because of her and other survivors, the rest of us can glimpse into the Titanic's ill-fated maiden — and only — voyage.

titanic replica tour

Bottom line

From the outside, it's easy to assume the Titanic Museum is all show and no substance in a town full of attractions geared toward tourists. But it turned out to be quite the opposite experience for me.

The museum showed as much reverence toward the Titanic's accomplishments as its tragedy. Each exhibit was designed so that everyone could experience and enjoy them and create lasting memories, regardless of age or previous familiarity with the Titanic.

Take a look inside the Titanic Museum housed in a replica of the ship and owned by a man who visited the deep-sea wreck in 1987

  • The Titanic Museum Attraction is housed in a replica of the famous ship in Branson, Missouri.
  • John Joslyn, who visited the deep-sea wreck of the Titanic in 1987, owns the attraction.
  • It features a grand staircase built to scale, models of cabins, and interactive exhibits.

Insider Today

John Joslyn was the second person to ever descend to the depths of the ocean to visit the wreckage of the Titanic.

A former television network executive, Joslyn co-led a $6 million expedition to explore and collect footage of the deep-sea shipwreck in 1987, two years after the site was discovered.

The experience inspired him to open the Titanic Museum Attraction in Branson, Missouri, in 2006.

Public fascination with the Titanic was renewed when a  tourist submersible operated by OceanGate carrying five passengers to the famous shipwreck went missing on Sunday. After a four-day search, rescue officials linked debris to the missing Titan vessel on Thursday, and concluded that the submersible likely suffered a catastrophic implosion that killed everyone on board.

"The Titanic Museum Attractions send our thoughts and prayers to those on the OceanGate Expedition crew and their families," a banner on the museum's official site reads.

Take a look inside the Titanic Museum Attraction.

The Titanic Museum Attraction in Branson, Missouri, is one of two Titanic-themed museums owned by John Joslyn, who visited the deep-sea wreck in 1987.

titanic replica tour

Joslyn and his wife, Mary Kellogg-Joslyn, opened the museum in Missouri in 2006, and a second location in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, in 2010, according to the Springfield Business Journal.

The museum is housed in a half-scale replica of the actual ship, with some features like the grand staircase built to scale.

titanic replica tour

The staircase replica cost $1 million to construct, according to Explore Branson.

Visitors receive a boarding pass with the name of an actual Titanic passenger at the entrance to the museum and learn more about them throughout the exhibits.

titanic replica tour

By the end of the tour, visitors learn what became of their passenger — whether they survived the wreck or tragically perished after the ship hit an iceberg on April 14, 1912.

Replicas of first-class cabins show what the luxurious side of the ship looked like.

titanic replica tour

John Jacob Astor IV was the Titanic's richest passenger, and widely believed to have been the richest man in the world when he died in the wreck. He was worth an  estimated $150 million , or $4.5 billion in today's dollars.

Third-class cabin replicas display the stark class differences of those on board.

titanic replica tour

Between 700 and 1,000 third-class passengers sailed on the Titanic, and they  all had to share two bathtubs , according to ABC News.

The museum also features interactive exhibits, allowing visitors to feel the dramatic slope of the deck as the ship sank.

titanic replica tour

The ship broke in two pieces as it sank — a fact that was disputed for 73 years until the wreck was finally found on the ocean floor.

A sample of 28-degree water allows guests to feel how cold the ocean was in the early morning hours of April 15, 1912, when the ship went down.

titanic replica tour

Most passengers who ended up in the water died from hypothermia within 15 minutes .

Artifacts from the wreckage pay tribute to the victims, while the Survivors' Wall of Stories preserves the testimonies of those who lived.

You'll Soon Be Able to Stay in a Life-sized Replica of the Titanic at This Chinese Theme Park

Every detail, down to the door handles, is made to look like that on the ill-fated ship, which sank more than a century ago.

titanic replica tour

The Titanic will rise again — well, a replica of it will. The Unsinkable Titanic — an exact 1:1 ratio copy of the original ship — is now well underway as part of China's Romandisea Seven Star International Cultural Tourism Resort .

First announced in 2014, the new ship is 269.06 meters (about 883 feet) long and 28.19 meters (about 92 feet) wide, according to the park's site . The banquet halls, theaters, observation decks, cabins, pools, and even the door handles on board will all follow the original British steamship — the largest of its time — which sank on April 15, 1912 after hitting an iceberg, killing 1,500 people, according to History .

Located in landlocked Daying County within the Sichuan Province, about 90 minutes east of Chengdu, the ship will be docked in the Qijiang River more than 600 miles away from the sea. Construction has already taken six years — longer than the original Titanic — with more than a hundred workers using 23,000 tons of steel with a budget of $1 billion Chinese yuan (about $155 million USD), Agence France-Presse reported . The keel laying for the project started with a ceremony in November 2016.

"I hope this ship will be here in 100 or 200 years," the project's investor Su Shaojun told AFP . "We are building a museum for the Titanic ."

But this will be a museum that you can stay in, with "five-star cruise service" which will cost up to $2,000 Chinese yuan (about $311 USD) a night. Despite it being docked, it will offer the feeling of being at sea because of the working steam engine, Su explained.

The attraction will also include a replica of Southampton Port and tour buses that play Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On," made famous by James Cameron's 1997 film "Titanic."

The replica has sparked controversy for luring tourists with a disaster that took so many lives. The original plans for the Unsinkable Titanic ship also included a show that recreated the iceberg hit that led to the sinking. While some initially defended the decision, that aspect has reportedly been put aside and is not mentioned on Romandisea's site.

It won't be the only Titanic replica in the world. Blue Star Line built Titanic II , which was originally slated to set sail in 2012, but is now looking at a 2022 launch, according to Business Insider .

The progress on the replica isn't the only Titanic news in China in recent weeks. A new documentary called "The Six" has also been released, according to NPR . The film follows the lives of six Chinese men who survived the Titanic 's 1912 sinking and were picked up by U.S. immigration officials, but turned away by the Chinese Exclusion Act, which banned Chinese people from immigrating until 1965.

MS Titanic 2 Review

Review of ms titanic 2.

MS Titanic 2 cruise ship is among the world's most-anticipated newbuild vessels on order , fascinating and inspiring millions worldwide. The Titanic replica is a stunning shipbuilding project to revive the ocean liner RMS Titanic . The idea for the new ship belongs to one of Australia's richest people - the mining magnate Clive Palmer.

On April 30, 2012, at a special press conference, Clive Palmer astonished and shocked the world by announcing his intention to build a full-scale replica of RMS Titanic. The new 56,000- GT ton ship will have 12 decks , 835 passenger staterooms and max capacity 2435 passengers plus 900 staff and crew.

The maiden voyage of Titanic II is planned to leave not from Southampton to New York (like the original liner), but from Jiangsu China (north of Shanghai ) to Dubai UAE . The new ship is intended to have modern passenger evacuation systems, digital navigation, latest radar systems and satellite communications, Helideck, top-deck gardens. Some relatives of passengers who died on RMS Titanic condemned the project to build a replica ship as insensitive. Blue Star Line was flooded with inquiries from potential customers, some offering up to GBP 640,000 to book Titanic 2's inaugural cruise.

The replica ship was expected to enter service in 2025.

IMPORTANT/NEWS : On March 13, 2024, at a press conference in Sydney NSW, Clive Palmer announced that his company Blue Star Line relaunched the shipbuilding project for Titanic II and plans to contract a shipyard in 2024 and start the project in 2025-Q1. For the delays he blamed the COVID crisis and assured that now he has "enough money to build the Titanic ten times over”. According to the billionaire, shipbuilding tenders would start in June (2024), with shipyard contracts signed by December. The project's estimated value would be between USD 0,5-1 billion. The Maiden Voyage is planned for 2027-Q1.

Titanic 2 ship construction and technical details

The new Titanic 2 ship was expected to be launched in 2018 - 106 years after the original ship sank in the North Atlantic Ocean. The original plans of Blue Star Line were to launch the replica ship in April 2012, to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the sinking.

The project was first pushed back to 2016, and then to 2018. In September 2018, Clive Palmer confirmed in London England that construction works have been recommended and that the new liner will be nearly identical to RMS Titanic.

The new ship will be 883 ft (270 m) long, just 2 inches longer than the original and 12 ft (3,7 m) wider in order to increase stability. The shipbuilder is CSC Jinling in Nanjing (the capital city of Jiangsu province, central-eastern China). The company is state-owned and has a shipyard with two drydocks.

The boat's external look is an exact copy of the namesake, but as a 21-st century cruise vessel, it will be fitted with top-notch marine systems and equipment to ensure the industry's highest safety standards. The original steam plant (based on coal-fired boilers and steam engines) is replaced by a diesel powerplant and diesel-electric propulsion.

Next video animation shows RMS Titanic's powerplant and how it works.

The new Titanic ship is powered by four Wartsila diesel engines - two model 12V46F (12-cylinder, combined output 28,8 MW) plus two model 8L46F (8-cylinder gen-sets, combined output 19,2 MW), to total power output 48 MW. The propulsion system is based on 3x azimuth thrusters (360-degree rotating propellers) with combined output 30 MW.

The cruise ship has a 2-sectioned Navigation Bridge - forward (designed as an original replica) and aft (high technology wheelhouse). Marconi Room (communication facility on RMS Titanic) will be replicated, but not functional.

A new extra "Safety Deck" between original decks D and C is projected for 18 lifeboats and the safety chutes. It was not decided whether there will be garage or cars on-deck storage on board. New Titanic 2 ship will have all the safety certificates, including of course SOLAS. The building cost of the new liner was estimated to be around GBP 400 million.

Despite the planned maiden voyage in 2016, then in 2018, the vessel's construction didn't start. Blue Star Line's website was closed in 2018 and Clive Palmer abandoned its trademark. In 2017, Palmer was reported to be in ill health, suffering from memory lapses.

Decks and Cabins

Just as the original liner, Titanic 2 is planned to have 3 passenger classes, with the options of guests to sleep 6 nights in a same-class cabin or 2 nights in each class. Surprisingly, the 3rd class is attracting attention globally, being one of the most searched. Bathrooms are designed to be common (shared). There was an idea the ship to provide costumes (typical for each class cabins) complementary to all passengers.

Staterooms as amenities and decorations are planned to be very similar to those of RMS Titanic. The custom-made premium furniture will be made of high-quality woods (mahogany, walnut, sycamore, satinwood). First-Class cabins feature oak paneling. Second-Class cabins are with 2 beds (sofabed and fold-away). All staterooms have a wardrobe, dresser, seating area, steward call buttons.

New lower deck cabins are designed with modern amenities, but all other staterooms and all public premises (deck D and above) are precise recreations of the original ship.

The boat has 12 decks , of which 10 are passenger-accessible and 7 with cabins ( 835 passenger staterooms ).

Shipboard facilities

The new "Safety Deck" houses the Casino Lounge, Retail Shops, Hospital (Infirmary) and the 400-seat Theater (main show lounge). The company V-Ships Leisure is contracted to provide all onboard entertainment. Other planned facilities include 3 dining rooms (including First-Class Dining Saloon colored in white), a la carte restaurant, Cafe Parisien (patisserie), promenade deck (outdoor walking area encircling the ship), glass-dome covered Sun Deck (sunbathing area with 2 swimming pools, jacuzzis, changing cubicles, showers), Spa complex, Turkish baths, gymnasium, squash court, smoking lounge (blue and red-colored), several bars.

RMS Titanic's lounges and public spaces will be recreated with regard to the smallest details, including timber cladding walls, custom-made furniture, original artworks, light fittings, crystal chandeliers.

Shipboard dining

Onboard dining menus were developed by 68 chefs. Clive Palmer hosted gala events in NYC, London and Macau, offering VIP guests the 11-course dinner to be available at the new Titanic.

The list of those meals included:

  • Course 1: Oysters
  • Course 2: Consomme Olga
  • Course 3: Scottish Balik Salmon w Mousseline Sauce, Cucumber
  • Course 4: Saute of Chicken Lyonnaise, Vegetable Marrow Farcie, Parmentier Potatoes

Clive Palmer's ship Titanic II

Creator of the Titanic 2 shipbuilding project is Clive Frederick Palmer (born March 26, 1954) - an Australian businessman, managing iron ore, nickel and coal holdings. Forbes Magazine estimated his wealth in January 2013 at USD 895 million.

In late-April 2012, Clive Palmer signed an MoU (memorandum of understanding) with one of China's largest shipbuilding companies - CSC Jinling - to construct a replica of RMS Titanic. Apart from his "Titanic 2" project, Palmer is also popular for another stunning plan - to create a Jurassic Park (with over 100 animatronic dinosaurs) in his resort in Coolum Beach - on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland Australia. In 2013, he formed the political party Palmer United, to compete for the federal election. He was a candidate for Division of Fairfax and won the election by 36 votes.

The replica cruise liner is planned to be 100% fireproof and with an ice-strengthened hull (ice-class PC6) to withstand icebergs and any weather extremes. The maritime industry's most advanced navigation equipment and all safety standards will be implemented.

"Titanic 2 Ship" project was initially joined by 3 big companies - Deltamarin (marine design, engineering, construction support), Tillberg Design Sweden ( cruise ship design , hotel and restaurant interiors) and Lloyd's Register Group Ltd (marine and shipping services, vessel classification society). The Titanic replica project was supported by an advisory board. The ship model was tested in Germany.

In the period 2015-2018, the project was suspended because Olive Palmer was in dispute with China's state-owned CITIC Group Corporation Ltd over the payment of royalties (hundreds of millions of US dollars) to Palmer-owned companies.

On October 16, 2018, Clive Palmer (current Chairman of the Paris -based "Blue Star Line" company) appointed his nephew Clive Mensink (former director of Queensland Nickel, Townsville QLD Australia ) as project's Director and company's CEO. He is responsible for staff recruitment, crew training and contractor negotiations. Company's headquarter office (in Paris France) is scheduled for opening in March 2019.

On October 30, 2018, as "Global Project Director" ("Titanic II") was announced Ms Baljeet Singh - lawyer and former Blue Star Line employee (Project Director in the period 2012-2015). Her job is to organize and attend planning and development meetings worldwide, liaising with USCG and US Gov agencies, overseeing the cruise company's European Director. Previously, she has worked for Clive Palmer as his mining company's Legal Director.

On December 17, 2018, was announced that V-Ships Leisure Ltd (a subsidiary of V-Group) is contracted as the ship management company for Titanic 2. V-Group is vessel management and support services provider, and industry's first with a dedicated cruise ship division (V-Ships Leisure).

On November 2, 2018, was announced that Deltmarin joins again the project. After reevaluating the project, in 2020 Deltmarin started to look for a shipbuilding yard as an alternative of the CSC Jinling Shipyard (China).

Titanic Ship Hotel in China (Romandisea Resort)

RMS Titanic inspired the Chinese company "Qixing Energy Investment Group" to build the famous ocean liner as a full-scale hotel ship replica. The order was placed with Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group.

The Chinese group manages energy factories. It announced the ship hotel project as a theme park - officially called "Romandisea Seven Star International Cultural Tourism Resort". The resort park is sized 6,7 km2 (2,6 ml2). It is located in Da Ying county (Sichuan Province, China) and includes attractions like spa resort (with Turkish baths), artificial beach, amusement park (with medieval castle replicas, Venetian church replica, clock tower, large swimming pool). Next image shows the resort's amusement park.

However, the resort's main attraction is the Titanic ship-hotel in life-size. The project's cost was nearly CNY 1 billion (USD 165 million / GBP 105 million). The construction was scheduled to start in 2014 and the opening was initially set for 2016.

The full-size replica ship is located over 1200 km (745 ml) from the sea (approx 114 km / 70 ml from Chengdu ). It has length 269 m (882 ft) and width 28 m (92 ft). It also has original features - like theatre, ballroom, swimming pool, staterooms.

The hotel is floating (docked at Qi River / moored permanently within a reservoir). China's Titanic replica has a capacity for 1500 guests per day.

Qixing revealed the plan to rebuild the luxury ocean liner in January 2014. Tickets cost from CNY 3000 (GBP 350) per cabin per night. Suites cost from CNY 100,000 Yuan (GBP 11,580). The onboard entertainment includes Vegas-style show productions, ballroom dancing, pool deck parties, food menus with items from the original liner.

China's Titanic ship-hotel was designed in 2 years, with designer and technician services provided by USA and UK companies using the blueprints of RMS Olympic. The groundbreaking ceremony was in March 2015. The shipbuilder started manufacturing parts for the liner in May 2015. The Chinese Titanic had its keel-laying ceremony held on November 29, 2016. The event was attended by Lord Peter Mandelson (British politician). The vessel was re-scheduled for completion in 2018.

On-site assembly was planned for May 2015 but started in late-November 2016. In December 2017, hull's construction at the assembly site was completed. In September 2017, ship's construction was half complete, with built 6 out of all 9 decks. In January 2018 was announced that due to financial problems (increasing steel prices), the project is pushed back until 2019.

Around 50,000 tons of steel were used for its construction – more than the steel used for building an aircraft carrier. The replica ship includes many original features (Atrium's grand staircase, dining rooms, passenger cabins, swimming pool, boiler room 1, engine room, engine replica, mock-up steam engine) plus some new features (ballroom, cinema/theatre lounge). Originally was planned an audiovisual technology at ship's theatre to simulate the iceberg collision that resulted in the sinking, but the idea was later scrapped. Ship's disaster simulator allows "passengers" to feel the shipwreck atmosphere in 6D.

RMS Titanic

The maiden voyage of RMS Titanic started on April 10, 1912, at noon. The intended distance of the journey from England was approx 5350 km. Unfortunately, the liner didn't finish its first and only voyage. On April 14, after receiving 6 warnings for floating sea ice, the crew sighted an iceberg. Travelling near the max speed and unable to turn quickly enough, at 23:40 (ship time) Titanic struck the iceberg. In less than 10 seconds the hull was ripped opened (below the waterline) for a length of 91 m. Titanic sank 2 hours and 40 min later (at 2:20 ship time / 5:18 GMT) on April 15, 1912.

The tragic story of the Titanic ship is described in movies due to the fact that it combines money, ambition, love, courage and loss. The story was dramatized a few times. The first successful movie came in 1958, “A Night to Remember” (IMBD). It was an adaptation of Walter Lord’s book of the same name, published in 1955 and it was based on the stories of sixty-three survivors from the Titanic disaster. Without any doubt, the best movie, based on the Titanic story, was made by James Cameron. The movie “Titanic” (IMBD) came in 1997. The story focuses on the love between two fictional characters from different social classes: Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet) and Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio).

The exact number of passengers and casualties is still a matter of discussion. Some (mainly business magnates) cancelled their trip just before ship's departure. Some travelled under false names and were added twice in the casualties list. Some died soon after the disaster due to injuries, hypothermia and other illnesses. Officially, Titanic left Ireland with 2224 passengers. About 1514 of them died and 710 were saved.

Exhibitions of different objects from the liner can be seen in museums such as Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax, Nova Scotia, National Maritime Museum in Greenwich and the SeaCity Museum in Southampton.

Next YouTube video is dedicated on RMS Titanic's maiden (and last) voyage.

Next, you can watch "Did Titanic Really Sink" - representing the conspiracy theory that the sisterships RMS Titanic and RMS Olympic were “switched” in an insurance fraud scheme.

Unfortunately, in 2020, the intriguing and most provocative "Titanic Conspiracy Documentary" (2012 movie) was removed from YouTube.

Billionaire Clive Palmer Relaunches Plans to Build a Replica of the Titanic

  • March 16, 2024

Titanic II

The Australian billionaire Clive Palmer and his company Blue Star Line have relaunched the plan to build the Titanic II, a replica of the ship that sank in 1912.

The billionaire and former member of the Australian parliament made the announcement on Thursday, March 13, at a press conference in Sydney.

According to the Guardian , Palmer revealed plans to secure a shipyard and start building the vessel “far, far superior than the original” early next year.

Palmer has already started and stopped the Titanic II project twice before (in 2012 and again in 2018) and blamed the pandemic for the delays. However, this time, he assured the public that he had “enough money to build the Titanic 10 times over”.

“So I could do the Titanic. I’m gonna do it,” said Palmer. “It’s a lot more fun to do the Titanic than it is to sit at home and count my money.

“All you need to be happy, I’ve found in my life, is to have someone that loves you, somewhere to sleep at night and enough for a good meal.

“Beyond that, the rest is an illusion – it’s like playing golf.”

Palmer said tenders for the construction of the vessel would go out in June, with contracts signed by December. According to the billionaire’s estimate, the project would cost between $500 million and $1 billion.

He also revealed that the Finnish-based ship design and marine engineering company Deltamarin supported the project.

Journalists at the press conference were shown a five-minute video of what all nine decks of the Titanic II would look like, complete with a ballroom, swimming pool and Turkish baths.

The Titanic II will be 269 meters (833 feet) long and 32.2 meters (105 feet) wide with a capacity for 2,345 passengers in 835 cabins. Nearly half of the cabins will be reserved for first-class passengers.

Third-class passengers will dine on stew and mashed potatoes at communal tables in a dining room reminiscent of the original ship. However, a spokesperson noted that alternative meal options will also be available for passengers seeking a less traditional experience.

There are still secrets to be found on Titanic. These graphics explore them

It sank 112 years ago Monday, but our obsession with the RMS Titanic continues.

History's most famous ship slipped beneath the North Atlantic at 2:20 a.m. on April 15, 1912 , but we continue to explore its maiden voyage, iceberg, sinking and undersea decay through a seemingly endless stream of photographs, books , documentaries and movies , and museum exhibits.

Fascination has led to tragedy. A submersible carrying five passengers to view the Titanic imploded near the wreck , killing all aboard, in June 2023.

It also has brought technological advances. In May 2023, a new type of digital scanning, using multiple images, gave us a three-dimensional view of the ship as it would look if it were lifted out of the water .

Why are people drawn to Titanic?

"There isn’t a simple answer," says Karen Kamuda, president of the Titanic Historical Society , which operates the Titanic Museum in Indian Orchard, Massachusetts.

Those who join the society are of "all ages and occupations, and their interests are multivariable," Kamuda says. Aside from their fascination with Titanic and its passengers and crew, their curiosity might include the sister ships Olympic and Britannic, the White Star Line, artifacts, and TV and movies.

"James Cameron’s 1997 film, ' Titanic ,' opened up a brand-new interest," Kamuda says. "The internet has helped spread the story worldwide."

Here are a few things you may not know about Titanic:

Titanic traveled less than 3,000 miles

Titanic was built at the Harland & Wolff shipbuilding company in Belfast, Ireland. After outfitting and sea trials, the ship left port for her maiden voyage.

From Belfast to the fatal iceberg strike, Titanic traveled about 2,555 nautical miles, or 2,940 land miles:

April 2, 1912 | 8 p.m.: Titanic leaves Belfast, sails to Southhampton, England (577 nm).

April 10, 1912 | noon: Titanic leaves Southhampton, sails to Cherbourg, France (88 nm).

April 11, 1912 | 8:10 p.m.: Titanic leaves Cherbourg, sails to Queenstown ( now known as Cobh ), Ireland (341 nm).

April 11, 1912 | 1:30 p.m.: Titanic leaves Queenstown for New York.

April 14, 1912 | 11:40 p.m.: Titanic strikes iceberg 1,549 nm from Queenstown.

April 15, 1912 | 2:20 a.m.: Titanic sinks about 400 miles south of Newfoundland, Canada.

Titanic's lifeboats were not filled to capacity

15-ton piece of wreckage recovered.

The largest piece of wreckage recovered from Titanic, above, is a 15-ton section of the hull measuring 26 feet by 12 feet. It's on display at Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas

The hull section was part of the starboard side of the ship , between the third and fourth funnels. It was lifted to the surface in 1998.

Museums keep Titanic's memory alive

A  number of museums offer visitors a look at hundreds of objects recovered from the wreck site. Here are a few:

And if you can't get to a Titanic museum, a traveling exhibit, Titanic. The Exhibition , with 200 items, may be coming to you after it leaves New York.

Thousands of artifacts have been salvaged

Titanic was much smaller than today's cruise ships, want to learn more about titanic.

The wreckage of the Titanic was found nearly 39 years ago during a secret US Navy mission to recover nuclear submarines

The Titanic sank 112 years ago, in April 1912, but the wreckage was only found 39 years ago.

Robert Ballard and Jean-Louis Michel found the wreckage 73 years after the ship sank.

Decades later, Ballard revealed that the dive was actually a secret Cold War Navy mission.

Almost immediately after the Titanic sank on April 15, 1912 , there were attempts to recover the wreckage and the bodies of those who had gone down with the ship. However, the limited diving technology of the time prevented this from becoming a reality for more than seven decades.

On September 1, 1985 — almost 39 years ago — the wreckage was found during a joint exploration by an American oceanographer, Robert Ballard, who was also a Navy officer, and a French oceanographer, Jean-Louis Michel, as The New York Times reported at the time.

But the dive initially had nothing to do with the Titanic at all — it was a secret mission to find the wrecks of two nuclear submarines, the USS Scorpion and the USS Thresher.

However, this information was not made public until 2008, when Ballard revealed the true nature of the mission to National Geographic.

"The Navy is finally discussing it," Ballard told National Geographic in 2008.

Ballard originally met with the US Navy in 1982 to secure funding for a new type of submersible technology that would allow him to find the Titanic. The Navy agreed to fund the project, but only if it would be used to investigate the sunken submarines. The USS Thresher sank in April 1963, and the USS Scorpion followed five years later, in May 1968. They remain the only nuclear submarines the Navy has ever lost, reported the United States Naval Institute.

The Navy agreed that Ballard could search for the Titanic if there were any time left in the mission after finding the subs — and after confirming whether the Soviet Union had played any part in sinking them.

"We saw no indication of some sort of external weapon that caused the ship to go down," Ronald Thunman, then the deputy chief of naval operations for submarine warfare, told National Geographic.

With 12 days left in the mission, Ballard found the Titanic using a hunch that the ship had split in two and left a trail of debris.

"That's what saved our butts," Ballard said to National Geographic. "It turned out to be true."

Ballard said the Navy was nervous that people would catch on to why they were actually scouring the ocean floor.

"The Navy never expected me to find the Titanic, and so when that happened, they got really nervous because of the publicity," Ballard said. "But people were so focused on the legend of the Titanic they never connected the dots."

So, 23 years later, Ballard disclosed the truth about his mission. He also wrote about his experience finding the ship in his book " The Discovery of the Titanic. "

"It was one thing to have won — to have found the ship," he wrote. "It was another thing to be there. That was the spooky part."

Correction: July 18, 2023 — An earlier version of this story misstated when the USS Scorpion disappeared. It was lost in May 1968, not May 1965.

‘Is She Sure?’ How the Breeders Joined Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts Tour.

The ’90s alt-rock icons hit the Madison Square Garden stage for the first time Friday night, after the 21-year-old pop star invited them to join her on the road.

Olivia Rodrigo remembers her life in two parts: before she heard the Breeders’ “Cannonball,” and after, she told the crowd at Madison Square Garden on Friday night, when her Guts World Tour arrived in New York.

And that is how the ’90s alt-rock idols came to play the New York arena for the first time last week, 31 years after that song from their platinum 1993 album, “Last Splash,” charted on Billboard’s Hot 100.

Rodrigo’s camp initially approached the Breeders in September about opening some dates on the tour supporting her second album, “Guts .” “My first reaction was, Wow, that seems kind of odd,” the band’s bassist, Josephine Wiggs, said in an interview. “But after I’d thought about it for a while, I thought, ‘That’s actually really genius.’”

Kim Deal, the singer-guitarist who leads the band with her twin sister, Kelley, said she was surprised when they got the invite. “I’d heard ‘Drivers License,’ and I liked that a lot,” she said, referring to Rodrigo’s breakout 2021 smash.

Kelley wondered if it might be a mistake. “I thought, ‘Is she sure? Do they really mean us?’”

But Rodrigo made her enthusiasm clear when the shows were confirmed, reaching out personally to share her excitement. “She texted each one of us individually,” Kelley recalled.

“And said, ‘Really happy to hear that you’re going to do this,’” Wiggs added. “Very classy.”

Aside from Kim, who played Madison Square Garden in 1992 when her earlier band, Pixies, opened for U2, no one in the group had ever performed at the venue before. Kim hadn’t been back since, and said she had no memory of that previous gig: “I usually remember the bad shows, so it’s a good thing that I really don’t remember that one.”

With the first date in the books, the Breeders spent part of Saturday afternoon glimpsing Rodrigo’s soundcheck — she was belting “Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl” to an empty arena — and then briefly chatting with her. “So easy to talk to!” Kim reported as the Breeders headed up to the stage to adjust their own amps and pedals. The lights were up; two men vacuumed the previous night’s pink and purple star-shaped confetti.

“How about we do a piece of ‘Cannonball,’ like when everything comes in?” Kim asked the band, which also includes the drummer Jim Macpherson. They had already tested the distorted ahh-ooohh-ahh vocalizations that open the song. Kim blew a whistle to emulate the record’s microphone feedback.

Rodrigo was born a decade after the release of “Cannonball,” but the 21-year-old heard it as a teenager and remembers “instantly falling in love with the Breeders,” she wrote in an email. “I thought Kim was the coolest girl in the world,” Rodrigo said. “I’m very inspired by them and everything they stand for. They are absolutely iconic, and playing these shows with them has been a surreal honor.” (The Breeders have joined the tour for four shows at the Garden that wrap on Tuesday, and four more at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles later this summer.)

Mischief, wryness, confidence and camaraderie feel encoded into the poised riffs and bass line of “Cannonball,” and it’s easy to imagine girls gently headbanging along to it for eternity. Rodrigo went louder and crunchier on “Guts,” long inspired by artists who are “not trying to recreate a version of rock music that guys make,” as she told The New York Times last year.

Soundcheck proceeded like a supercut. “Should we do half of ‘Do You Love Me Now’?” Kim asked before crashing the song open and letting its twin harmonies ring out. “A little piece of ‘Drivin’ on 9’?” signaling the aching country tune. “Should we throw in ‘Gigantic’?” Kim asked before unleashing the titanic anthem she co-wrote and sang as a member of Pixies. (She dedicated its “big, big love” to Rodrigo during the show.)

Earlier, the band sat in a green room processing its Guts experience so far. Kelley had been impressed by the emotional arc of Rodrigo’s songs the previous night. “I was texting somebody, ‘I’m so empowered right now!’” She later reached out to praise Rodrigo’s voice as “really special,” observing, “Her tone and control are spectacular!”

“She performs with a really good sense of humor,” Kim added.

Wiggs said she could hear some Breeders commonalties in a Rodrigo chord progression, while Macpherson detected a bit of the band in “Jealousy, Jealousy,” from her first album, “Sour.” “The bass riff was almost like a ‘Hag,’ ‘Hellbound’ -ish kind of thing,” he said.

The Breeders expressed shock at how young Rodrigo’s fans were, and the collective decibel of their screams on Friday night. “You’re going to be surprised by how loud it was,” Kelley said. Weren’t their own amps loud, too? “Not louder than 30,000 tweens,” she said.

Kim roasted her bandmates for withholding stage banter the night before. “Looking out at the sea of 7- and 8-year-olds, I had no idea what to say,” Wiggs said, deadpan. “I could just about manage to say something to people who are obviously teenagers. I was like, OK, maybe I’ll try to make eye contact with the dads.”

The Deal sisters are no strangers to parental accompaniment at gigs. “My dad used to have Ray Charles in his headphones, watching us play, when he drove us around in the r.v. with Nirvana,” Kim said, referring to the band’s 1992 tour with what was then the biggest band on Earth. “He’d have his cassette Walkman,” Kelley added. “He was a big supporter, but he’d heard us a million times.”

In Kurt Cobain’s liner notes to Nirvana’s 1992 compilation “Incesticide,” he detailed the recent life experiences that had meant the most to him since “becoming an untouchable boy genius,” including “playing with the Breeders” on the list. “Nirvana and Foo Fighters would really curate their opening bands, which is I think what Olivia is doing in a way, curating new music that she wants fans to get to know,” Kelley said.

Most of the young people watching from the front rows on Saturday were not familiar with the Breeders — who are all in their 50s and 60s — though there were exceptions. “My parents know who they are!” exclaimed an 18-year-old fan named Mack. “My dad said they had some jams back when he was younger. He didn’t know if I would like them, but I trust Olivia.”

Another fan, Elle, 16, was with her father, who saw the Breeders at Lollapalooza alongside Smashing Pumpkins and the Beastie Boys. “For me, this was really cool,” he said. “I don’t know the tour’s other openers as well, but I’ve loved the Breeders since ’94 when I saw them last.”

Rodrigo’s fans were decked out in sparkling skirts, purple bows and platform boots in honor of their heroine, who took the stage in a series of short, glittering skirts. The Breeders are known for more understated sartorial choices. Had they given any thought about to what to wear?

“I sent out a ‘help’ text to a friend of mine,” Kelley admitted. “I said, I’m trying to upgrade my look from my T-shirt and jeans that I typically wear, but staying in my comfort zone. He said, ‘I find glitter or sequins to always be the answer.’ I just waited for him to laugh or something. That was no help to me at all. So I went with a T-shirt and jeans.”

“Like she’s been dressing since seventh grade,” Kim said.
