When Tom Cruise Saved the Ray-Ban Brand

One of the most iconic scenes of Tom Cruise’s career comes early on in the 1983 film Risky Business , in which Cruise—not quite yet a star— dances in his underwear to Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll.”

Many people recall this scene as Cruise wearing sunglasses—specifically Ray-Ban sunglasses. He doesn’t. It’s an example of the so-called Mandela Effect , in which communal memories can change over time. But Cruise does sport the glasses elsewhere in the movie, and on the poster. And thanks to his charisma, the Ray-Ban brand experienced a renaissance that had sales shooting through the roof.

Ray-Bans actually have two iconic designs. The green, teardrop-shaped Ray-Ban aviators debuted in 1937 and were popular among pilots in World War II. They eventually found a niche among the general public, especially after General Douglas MacArthur wore them in a widely-circulated photo. (Bausch + Lomb, which makes the glasses, called them Ray-Bans because they “banned” UV rays.) But Ray-Ban also scored a hit with their Wayfarers, the chunky black sunglasses first introduced in 1952, which Cruise wears in Risky Business .

Prior to Cruise’s modeling of the style, however, Ray-Bans as a whole were struggling. Both the aviators and the Wayfarers were losing market share to sunglasses that were more emblematic of the 1980s, which had a tendency to ignore subtlety. The days of James Dean or Marlon Brando being Ray-Ban influencers had disappeared. In 1981, the company was selling just 18,000 pairs annually and was considering discontinuing them. In 1982, after fashion magazine GQ featured them in a spread, sales rose to 200,000 pairs. An improvement, but not a huge one.

Enter Cruise. In his first major starring role in Risky Business , Cruise portrays Joel Goodson, an ambitious teenager who uses his parents’ absence to both dance through the house semi-nude and start a brothel. Released on August 5, 1983, the film was a hit, and suddenly moviegoers wanted to wear what Cruise was wearing in the film. Sales of Wayfarers increased by roughly 50 percent to 360,000 pairs sold in 1983 and remained strong throughout the 1980s. By 1988, Bausch + Lomb was selling 3 to 4 million Wayfarers a year.

If that wasn’t enough to earn Cruise free shades for life, consider what else he did for the company. In 1986’s Top Gun , Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell donned the aviators throughout the film. Once again, audiences wanted to emulate his look, and sales went up 40 percent. By 1988, orders for 4.5 million aviators were coming in.

So was it Cruise, or a costume designer? According to Norman Salik, the vice president of public relations for Bausch + Lomb in 1988, the actor deserved the credit. Cruise “just likes our products,” Salik told the Chicago Tribune .

Cruise became so synonymous with Ray-Bans that there was actually some blowback. When Cruise made 1988’s Rain Man with Dustin Hoffman, director Barry Levinson was opposed to his star wearing the brand because Cruise was too closely identified with them. Maybe the Mandela Effect was already in action.

Like most fashion statements, the Ray-Ban Wayfarers and aviators fall in and out of style on a regular basis. Cruise, however, never seemed to lose his love for the brand. In 2013, as the star was greeted by journalists at the premiere of Star Trek: Into Darkness , he was asked if his sleek dark sunglasses were 3-D glasses for the film. “No, man,” Cruise replied. “These are Ray-Bans.”

Although this isn't the first time we've seen Tom Cruise in Persol sunglasses , it is the first time that we've seen him wearing this particular style and colourway. We hope that this trend continues as we think it suits him.

The 2017 film see Cruise play Barry Seal in "American Made" a former TWA pilot who starts working for the CIA in the early 1980s. The film is based on true events and chronicles Seal's involvement in the Contras scandal.

”Wayfarers” Cruise wore in ”Risky Business” and the aviator-style glasses he wore in ”Top Gun,” are pleased that sunglasses continue to be to Cruise what the trenchcoat was to Humphrey Bogart (now what label did he wear, and did anybody really care?).

Although Cruise has no official link with the Rochester, N.Y., company, his association with Ray-Ban in the public mind pays big dividends.

”Sales of Wayfarers (one Ray-Ban style) were 111,000 a year in 1982,”

says Norman Salik, vice president of public relations. After ”Risky Business” in 1983 and a number of other propitious placements, the company sold 3 million of the style in 1988.

Cruise`s string of hit films as well as one of the most aggressive

”placement” programs in the fashion industry have kept up public awareness and company sales. The company`s sunglasses appeared in 160 movies last year and are the shades worn on TV`s ”Moonlighting.”

Salik characterizes aviator style as ”the blue blazer” of sunglasses, a model with steady but unremarkable sales increases of about 4 percent each year-until Cruise and ”Top Gun.” After the film opened in 1986, Ray-Ban aviator sales shot up 40 percent and in succeeding years sales have settled into double-digit increases.

Success brings its own set of problems, though. Salik says that Cruise

”just likes our products,” but director Barry Levinson felt the actor was too identified with the brand and insisted his young star don something else in ”Rain Man.” For Salik, the next chapter of the story is happier. Cruise will once again wear Ray-Bans in his next film, ”Born on the Fourth of July.”

Looking for a suit on sale? No one is saying exactly what will happen, but Sears Roebuck & Co. is dropping out of the tailored clothing business and will phase out suits, sportcoats and tailored pants in 550 stores across the country by the end of 1989. According to a Sears spokesman, the retailer will be out of tailored clothing by 1990 except through the Sears catalogue. With the exception of the Johnny Carson and Robert Stock brands, the company carries mostly private label suits and sportcoats. Prices are typically $150 to $200.

In place of the suits, Sears will expand men`s sportswear, accessories, workwear and staples such as dress shirts and will emphasize more national brands, better-quality private-label sportswear and young men`s clothing. Just how the company will unload all that clothing, estimated to bring in $100 million to $150 million annually, was a question posed by DNR, a menswear trade newspaper. Warren Flick, Sears` vice president of men`s fashion, promised no special promotions, but told the publication ”a game plan is in place for bringing us down to our end-of-the-year deadline.”

In the ”have-a-heart” category, New York designer Eric Smith, the wacky and wonderful impresario of men`s socks, has given a $5,000 gift to Chicago House to help AIDS patients.

Smith, better known by his label and moniker E.G. Smith, has created eye- catching style in his collection, which he claims ”are all hand tie-dyed by hippies in upstate New York.” True or not, the $18 socks are popular gift items, particularly during the holidays, and Smith, in recent years, has donated $20,000 from the sale of the socks to charitable organizations working with AIDS patients around the country.

”It`s a way for me to use my product and company to give something back to the community that has supported me,” he said.

Chicago area stores that carry Smith socks include Marshall Field & Co., Bloomingdale`s, Bad Boys, Traffik and Extremities. –

Glamorous Gucci’s, all black with large lenses and thick sides, just seem to scream “I’m a movie star!” You are, Tom, you are. These are fabulous for facing the paparazzi when getting in and out of matching black limos because they don’t show the angry eyes! Oh wait, that would be Sean Penn, not Tom Cruise.

Even in big, boxy, black shades, Cruise is still beautiful. Of course, these square sunnies aren’t just any glasses, but stylish Ray Ban’s with polarized lenses and a double metal crossbar accent. These are squares with flair to be sure!

What Goes Around

Never one to shy away from different shaped shades (a good thing when you have a face that can wear anything!), Cruise even wears rounder lenses on occasion. He’s been seen rockin’ some sweetly round-edged Persols.The black square style of classic summer eyewear really suits Tom Cruise. He goes for Gucci in the dark, iconic sunglasses shape popular with men and women. Tom looks sophisticated and sporty all at once in these shades. And as an interesting change from his typical black lenses and cool toned metals, Tom is striking in Ray Ban’s warm-toned version of aviators. The metal trim of these classics is all gold and the lenses are a greenish gray color. Hot!

Bare Essentials

In Mission Impossible, Cruise wore a few different, ultra-small, ultra-sporty Oakleys. Those black, tiny Oakley Eye Jacket sunglasses covered only Tom’s eyeballs, yet he looked fabulous. Once again, Tom Cruise helped fuel an summer eyewear craze. Guys were wearing these shades all over the place after the movie came out.

Living Large

Really proving that he can carry off any shape and size of sunnies, Cruise just rocks the goggle-like, Dior 0087/5 shades. These huge, rimless sunglasses are all fashionably black with a thick metal top crossbar for glamor. He looked so incredibly amazing that he probably got anything he wanted when he wore these babies!

Justin Case

Just in case his eyewear seems to be even remotely predictable, Tom seems to really switch things up every once in a while. A case in point is the Justin designer shades that Tom’s been seen wearing. These are gold-toned, metal trimmed lenses of a unique kind of tilted rectangular shape by designer Loree Rodkin. They’re inspired by aviators, yet don’t have the low-dipping lenses. As usual, Tom Cruise can carry these more unusual shades off, no problem. We wonder what kind of sunglasses style he’ll choose for fun next. Bring it on, Tom!

Thirty years ago, Ray-Ban was far from being the successful brand we know today. The company reached its lowest point in sales in 1981. At the time, the brand was seen as outdated, as bolder oversized frames were in fashion at the time. Ray-Ban was selling only around 18,000 units per year. It was on the verge of filing for bankruptcy, almost ending a 40-year-old business. While this was happening, the first Top Gun was in development. When creating the movie, the filmmakers wanted to use a realistic approach, even going as far as letting Tom Cruise fly and film in a real fighter jet. This extended to crafting Maverick's distinct look, which is reminiscent of a young, confident pilot. Aviators were necessary for the look as these were eyewear specifically designed for flying. These  sunglasses  were made with advanced light protection to shield the eyes of American pilots in 1937 from being so close to the sun. The lenses also reduce harsh glare, helping pilots see better and enhance their performance. Its unique style has since been viewed as classic and timeless. When Top Gun first came out in 1986, the unit sales of Ray-Ban aviators increased by 40%. It hasn't been confirmed whether it was Tom Cruise's choice to go with Ray-Ban, but it is now considered one of his trademark accessories.

Tom Cruise and Ray-Ban

Many would be surprised that Top Gun wasn't the first movie where Tom Cruise donned Ray-Ban shades. In 1983, the actor wore Ray-Ban's Wayfarer frames for a sequence in Risky Business where his character dances to Old Time Rock and Roll by Bob Seger. Throughout the years, this  iconic scene  has been recreated numerous times for movies, shows, and commercials. By 1988, Tom Cruise was so heavily associated with the brand that the director of the Oscar-winning movie Rain Man refused to let the actor wear Ray-Bans for any of his scenes. However, Tom Cruise has continued to support the brand in the years that followed. In 2013, a reporter asked Tom Cruise if the shades he wore on the red carpet of Star Trek Into Darkness were 3-D glasses for the film. The actor denied it and said, "No, man. These are Ray-Bans."

Top Gun and its lasting legacy

Over the years, many Top Gun fans have been asking for a follow-up movie due to the first film's success. In fact, the Navy's recruitment rates increased by up to 500% after it was released. The fans finally got their wish in 2022. Unsurprisingly, many of its promotional materials included distinct Ray-Ban aviators. The movie's theme song, performed by Lady Gaga, had a music video in which the singer donned the eyewear. Social media filters were also released in which audiences could wear Maverick's signature sunglasses. Sales for Ray-Ban aviators rose once again, just like they did in 1986. Just like its predecessor, the sequel was an instant success. It was nominated for six Academy Awards and won Best Sound. It was named the Best Film of the Year by film review company Rotten Tomatoes. It is currently the fifth  highest-grossing movie  of all time domestically. Top Gun: Maverick supporting actor Miles Teller confirms that discussions of a third Top Gun movie with Tom Cruise are ongoing. Should this push through, Ray-Ban can undoubtedly look forward to another lucrative boost.

To convince Tom Cruise to film Top Gun in '86, the actor was taken on a plane with the Blue Angels Navy, who made him experience rolls and spins. Tom Cruise achieved peak stardom in 1988. He’d had hits with Risky Business and Top Gun . He’d helped Paul Newman finally win an Oscar for The Color of Money . But ’88 he’d proven he was beyond bank with Cocktail , a fluff tale of a bartender. The film made a mint as people flocked to the theater to see Tom shaking up drinks. Tom Cruise could have just kept out cranking out light weight flicks that made millions based on his grin. But the actor wanted to do work with a bit of weight. That Christmas audiences saw the new superstar playing against another big name and taking the less flashy role. Rain Man had Cruise being a complete jerk to Dustin Hoffman ( The Graduate ). Audiences loved him even more in a serious and prestigious film than his time mixing up a vodka martini.

Charlie Babbage (Cruise) has imported four grey market Lamborghini sportscars from Europe that aren’t street legal in America. He has a lot of cash tied up with the cars. He can’t legally complete selling to buyers until the EPA signs off on their emissions. In the midst of this crisis, he gets a call that his rich father has died. He’s got something in the will. Charlie hated his rich dad so he’s eager to get the will read so he can collect. The reading turns into a disaster since all he gets left is a classic car from 1949 and rose bushes. The rest of the $3 million is being given to a mysterious beneficiary. He uncovers it is a mental institution. Why would his father do this? Turns out Charlie wasn’t an only child. He meets Raymond (Dustin Hoffman), his older brother. His father had Raymond institutionalized to help him. Raymond is an autistic savant. Charlie needs money fast and lures Raymond out of the institution and to a hotel. He tells the doctor that he’ll return Raymond for half of his father’s estate or else he’ll take his brother back to Los Angeles. This turns out to be hard since Raymond refuses to fly. The brothers embark on a cross country road trip that allows Charlie to get to know his long-lost brother, but also learn the challenges of living with someone who needs things on a regular basis such as watching The People’s Court and underwear from K-Mart. Can he really handle an adult who can’t be left on his own? At the same time, Charlie’s life is falling apart as he’s stuck between angry buyers and impatient creditors on the car deal. Things aren’t looking great for the Babbage brothers on their journey.

When Rain Man came out, the movie did get a lot of people interested in the nature of autism. The movie made us understand that not everyone with autism are autistic savants that can break a casino. Over the decades, it feels like I know more people who have children on the autism spectrum. It’s helped to understand their relationship from remembering how Raymond interacted with Charlie. It’s tough and you have to be beyond patient.

While the conversation always turns to Dustin Hoffman’s performance as an autistic person, we don’t pay enough attention to Tom Cruise work as Charlie. He is also a character that doesn’t emotionally connect to people. He treats everyone around him as something to use and abuse. He grabs Raymond as part of a plot for the money and not help them begin bonding as brothers. Shame there’s not a scene where Charlie gets examined to see if he’s on the Spectrum. Tom Cruise makes Charlie such a horrible character who proves capable of emotionally connecting during the road trip. He was doing more than putting on sunglasses and flashing a smile to make the role.

Rain Man proved to be a critical success when it was released before Christmas of 1988. Besides making major critics’ Top 10 lists, the movie won the Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original screenplay and Dustin Hoffman won Best Actor. It’s rather shocking that Tom Cruise didn’t even get nominated. Even more amazing is that Rain Man was top of the box office bringing in $172 million on a budget of $25 million. There was a time when people flocked to a film that wasn’t about superheroes although Raymond did have a superpower when it came to counting cards.

Rain Man remains relevant and entertaining after 35 years.

The Video for the 4K UHD (2160) is scanned from the original camera negative and approved by director Barry Levinson. The film looks great during the scenic parts of the car ride. The Audio is English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. You’ll hear clearly all the times Raymond declares he’s “an excellant driver.” The is also dubs in French 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio and Spanish Mono. The movie is subtitled in English on the 4K UHD. The Blu-ray includes French and Spanish subtitles.

The Journey of Rain Man (22:09) has Barry Levinson was the fourth director attached to the film including Steven Spielberg. When Barry was given the script, Sydney Pollack was lined up to direct. Barry was merely giving his pal a few notes. A few weeks later, Barry was signing to direct. Barry Morrow points out the film was shot during the writers strike. He also said there was always an issue figuring out the proper tone for the ending. Barry wanted the film to be simplified and focused on the brothers. Ronald Bass had his sister help him with the autism element in his work on the script. Diane Bass points out that Raymond can’t change over the course of the film. The change has to all be in Charlie. This was from the 15th anniversary release.

Lifting the Fog: A Look at the Mysteries of Autism (20:15) has medical professionals discuss autistic savants. Barry talks about how his friend Bill and the real-life Rain Man inspired the script. We meet Joseph Sullivan who is a math whiz and Peter Guthrie who knows Rod Stewart hits.

Deleted Scene (2:13) has Raymond enter a drugstore looking for cheese balls.

History of Top Gun and Ray-Ban Aviators

Ray-Ban Aviators were created in the 1930s as pilot sunglasses to help shield aviators' eyes from the glare of the sun above the clouds. Over the years, Ray-Ban Aviators became an American icon, often spotted on celebrities from Audrey Hepburn and James Dean to Michael Jackson and Madonna.

In the 1986 blockbuster movie "Top Gun," Tom Cruise wore the same style of aviators that he wears in the 2022 movie "Top Gun: Maverick." Thanks to the popularity of the original "Top Gun" movie, both sunglasses sales and interest in military aviation took off. 

The movie "Top Gun" is based on the U.S. Navy's Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Course, also known as TOPGUN, at the Navy Fighter Weapons School. The school opened in California in 1969 to better train fighter pilots for combat in the Vietnam War. It became famous thanks to "Top Gun," and Ray-Ban Aviators also got their moment in the sun.

Before starring in "Top Gun," Tom Cruise already had ties with Ray-Ban. He wore a pair of classic Ray-Ban Wayfarers in "Risky Business," the racy teen comedy that came out three years earlier in 1983.

The original "Top Gun" movie sent sales of Ray-Ban Aviators soaring. The brand reportedly saw sales skyrocket by 40% after the movie’s release — higher than an F-14 fighter jet with Maverick in the cockpit.

Who is Tom Cruise's Maverick?

In the 2022 movie "Top Gun: Maverick" and in the original 1986 movie "Top Gun," iconic American actor Tom Cruise plays Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. So, who is Maverick? He's a fictional lieutenant and fighter pilot at the U.S. Navy's "Top Gun" school for pilots. He's brave, charismatic and cocky.

Maverick is known for doing daredevil stunts in the air, playing volleyball in his free time, and for wearing Ray-Ban sunglasses . In the 1986 movie, his wingman is Nicholas "Goose" Bradshaw, a fellow fighter pilot who also wears aviators .

After a long, protracted wait, Maverick: Top Gun is finally here. The sequel hits theaters this week amid a very weird time for movies. A slew of major blockbusters have all had their opening dates pushed due to COVID-19; a handful of recent theatrical releases, meanwhile, are getting fast-tracked to Video on Demand . But since the trailer dropped a whopping two years ago, Maverick has remained a shimmering ray of popcorn-chomping hope on the horizon, a high-octane, greased-up, beach-volleyball-playing, mach-two-with-your-hair-on-fire scorcher that promises a return to the heyday of the summer blockbuster . 

But the much-anticipated Top Gun sequel stands apart for another reason entirely. Cinephiles love to bemoan the dearth of originality in modern blockbusters; the most successful pictures, they’ll groan at you, are almost always paint-by-numbers sequels or lazy remakes or loose adaptations of some obscure Happy Meal toy from 1992 designed to tickle your brain’s warm nostalgic pleasure centers. Judging by the reviews , though, Maverick appears to be a shot-for-shot recreation of the original Top Gun (albeit laced with way, way more vertigo-inducing, real-deal stunt work )—and yet people are still losing their goddamn minds over this movie. Tom Cruise does not lose. His ego just keeps writing checks that his body miraculously continues to cash .

Along with Cruise, his old teeth-chomping adversary Val Kilmer, and a sweaty undercurrent of latent homoeroticism, the sequel is bringing back another vital piece of the Top Gun puzzle: Maverick’s iconic Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses. In the seven months after the first film dropped in 1986, sales of aviators reportedly jumped 40%. It’s easy to see why: everybody, a slightly damp Tom Cruise especially included, looks great in a pair of aviators . The teardrop lenses flatter all face shapes, and the slender metal frames sync up perfectly with everything from a tight white tee and Levi’s to a heavily starched and pressed dress uniform . Like Cruise himself, they’re ageless and eternal.

And if the buzz is to be believed, you’re going to want to buy your pair pronto. Assuming the excitement around this flick continues to build apace, and history repeats itself, waiting to see it before copping the shades will likely mean missing out on them entirely. (And remember— there are no points for second place .) Safer to secure ‘em now, before everyone and their uncle gets the same idea. Trust us: they’re going to look cool as all hell on an 80-foot IMAX screen, and they’ll look equally as cool on you all summer. They’re the best of the best , and they’ll make you better.

Why Tom Cruise Deserves More Credit For His Performance In Rain Man

Dustin hoffman stole the show and deservedly won an oscar, but cruise did much of the heavy lifting..

Tom Cruise has given many memorable performances in a film career spanning four decades. From his breakthrough role as Joel Goodson in 1983’s Risky Business to Frank “T.J.” Mackey in 1999’s Magnolia , not to mention an ever-growing number of turns as a powerhouse action star, the actor’s repertoire is certainly varied and impressive. Having appeared in forty-three films and reaching a level of stardom that most performers wouldn’t even dream of, he’s an actor who can easily be taken for granted. This is especially true of moviegoers who have never known a cinematic world in which Cruise wasn’t a fixture.

Perhaps one of his most underrated performances is that of Charlie Babbitt in Barry Levinson’s 1988 film Rain Man .

The story of a young, crass, yuppie car salesman, who upon his father’s death learns that he has an older brother with autism, was an immediate hit with both critics and audiences. Winning four Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Dustin Hoffman , as well as achieving major box office success, Rain Man is an undeniable American classic that continues to resonate with viewers thirty-four years later.

Much of the discussion surrounding the film has typically revolved around Hoffman’s performance as Raymond, which, over time, has proven to be one of lasting power in its singularity, consistency and oft-quoted lines of dialogue. Pulling off a seemingly effortless portrayal (although Hoffman reportedly had little confidence in his ability to play the part during the film’s shoot), the actor steals the show by getting the biggest laughs and tugging at our heartstrings on a regular basis. Considering that the character of Raymond has a constricted range of emotion and expression, it truly is a nuanced and memorable performance by one of the greatest actors of his generation.

With all of that said, however, it’s easy to forget that such a character and performance, though memorable as they are, would likely not have been enough to carry an entire film on their own. Due to Raymond’s interpersonal limits, as well as his static personality and behavior, he required an anchor, someone to play off of. He needed someone to pitch the ball so that he could hit home runs, so to speak. In the way that a comedic performer often relies on a straight man to serve as a foil for his antics, Raymond wouldn’t have been nearly as compelling, funny or effective without the presence of Charlie.

Tom Cruise’s Charlie lays the foundation for the entire film, and the actor appears in all but one scene. Rain Man kicks off with his character: a fast-talking, greedy, inconsiderate man who lives selfishly and treats those around him with disrespect. After learning of his estranged father’s death and, while understandably bitter due to their fraught relationship and finding himself in financial turmoil, all he can think about is the inheritance he assumes he’s going to get. Instead of receiving his father’s fortune, however, the yuppie is only able to land the old man’s car and rosebushes (he definitely got the rosebushes). The money, he eventually discovers, will go to a brother he didn’t even know existed.

The rest, as they say, is history. Charlie essentially kidnaps Raymond from his group home in the hopes of holding him hostage until some kind of monetary arrangement can be made. After Charlie’s girlfriend leaves him over his treatment of Raymond, the two men embark on a cross-country drive from Ohio to Los Angeles. Forced to remain in close quarters with a man he doesn’t know, and eventually reaching a level of understanding and appreciation for the nuances of a cognitive condition he initially couldn’t comprehend, Charlie develops a brief yet deeply familial bond with his brother. Raymond ultimately returns to his group home and Charlie, no longer caring about any financial gain, vows to maintain a loving relationship with him.

Herein lies one of the key challenges required of Cruise in his role as Charlie Babbitt: he’s a dynamic character who undergoes a level of personal change throughout the film. Of course, the role of Raymond required a carefully crafted set of behaviors rooted in reality (Hoffman met with and studied the behavior of several people with autism and Savant Syndrome), but ultimately his character remains largely the same from beginning to end. Cruise, on the other hand, had to take audiences through the arc of a man who initially presents as one way and closes the film presenting as another. When we meet Charlie, he’s a complete and utter jerk, but by the time the film ends, he’s displaying a level of warmth and compassion that is a complete reversal from the man we first laid eyes on. Ultimately, we not only have to like Charlie to some degree, but furthermore must be convinced that his newfound kindness and generosity are genuine.

Even though Raymond is the title character (sort of?) of the film, Rain Man is a story that largely revolves around Charlie and his own journey of self-discovery. As viewers, we are tethered to him, and he serves as the vessel through which we experience the interactions, conflicts and emotions confronting the characters throughout the narrative. The first time we meet Raymond is Charlie’s first time meeting Raymond. When Raymond speaks and behaves in ways that are baffling and bewildering to us, Charlie is baffled and bewildered. When we arrive at the film’s end and are sad to see Raymond go, Charlie is sad to see Raymond go. Charlie is the viewer and the viewer is Charlie.

Thinking in this way about the performance Cruise gives, including all the heavy lifting he’s responsible for in terms of exposition, catharsis and resolution, it becomes apparent that he was tasked with no easy feat as an actor. In playing the straight man counterpart (although Cruise has his own moments of comedic gold that derive from portraying a man who’s constantly frustrated and ornery) to Raymond’s larger-than-life character, the role of Charlie is, on the surface, somewhat thankless but utterly crucial to the film working as a whole. Without a foundation providing Raymond with the ability to shine as one of cinema’s most singular and memorable characters, Rain Man would be a completely different kind of film altogether.

While he effectively took audiences through a man’s personal transformation, it’s easy to forget that Tom Cruise, in 1988, was still a young and developing actor. He had achieved stardom with films like Risky Business and Top Gun , yes, but Rain Man was the film in which he really began to stretch his performative legs and display an amount of range not previously seen. It was arguably the first film of his career in which the dramatic depth and weight of such a story was largely dependent on his abilities as an actor.

On the heels of his performance as Charlie Babbitt, Cruise would next star as Vietnam War veteran Ron Kovic in Oliver Stone ’s Born on the Fourth of July. For playing Kovic the actor would receive some of his strongest praise to date and the first of three Academy Award nominations. A strong case can be made that with that role, Cruise ascended to the next level of his career. He was no longer just a movie star with good lucks, but also a versatile performer with dramatic heft. Rain Man was the stepping stone needed for him to arrive at that plane and, throughout the 1990s and well into the 2000s, he continued to display a consistent level of artistic growth.
