Why we chose Topaz

In the diving world, your name is everything. Instead of being lost in the myriad of Red Sea inspired names and websites, we chose a unique name with significance.

Legend says the ancient name for St. John's Island in the Red Sea was Topazius and the yellow/amber stones mined from there were called topaz.

Topaz is naturally beautiful in its colorless state but it's the small imperfections  which ironically make them unforgettable. It is the same with us. We cannot of course guarantee you will see the marine life you wish to see but when you get an upclose glimpse of the unexpected, that is the type of imperfection we embrace.

Our symbol, the blue topaz, represents  wisdom, communication and loyalty. It recharges the spirit, relaxes the body and enhances focus, much like diving.

Rays, eels, dugongs, nudibranchs, sea urchins and so much more calmly go about their day and once in a while may give a glance at you. On a few occasions you may be greeted by a dolphin or two and more rarely may get a quick glimpse of a barracuda or one of the several species of sharks. Nothing to fear though...more fearful of you than you are of them, in 10 years of diving Abdul has only experienced the encounter a handful of times. Night Dives

Night dives, realm of the brave. This particular dive is for experienced divers ONLY! Proof of previous experience may be required. Although caution is encouraged in ANY water related activity, we actively encourage more on night dives. Although you are with an experienced dive instructor and your journey is well lit, paying attention to the instructions and signals given will be even more important during night dives. Please contact us for further details.

Snorkeling 

 Enjoy the serenity of crystal clear waters while observing the extensive marine life during your snorkeling adventure. Adults and children alike are mesmerised by colorful corals, horizontally striped Sohal tangs and of course the ever popular clown fish. Banner fish, butterfly fish and the co founders personal favorite, the parrot fish, in all their glorious colors, await you. The exquisite Picasso Triggerfish is a beauty but very quick. If you're blessed enough to get a glimpse of him, you're very lucky indeed! The Emperor Angelfish needs little introduction as he majestically glides through the waters looking rather like a work of art than a fish. Do be on the lookout too for the schools of Sergeant Major Damselfishes and the adorable masked pufferfish.

Topas Ecolodge

Surrounded by rice terraces, rolling hills, green forests and villages, Topas Ecolodge Sapa is a Danish-owned boutique property situated atop two conical hills deep in the mountains of Hoang Lien National Park, 45 minutes’ drive from Sapa in northern Vietnam.

Chalet-style Chic

Accommodation comprises 41 chalet-style stone bungalows in four different categories: Premium Executive Bungalows, Suite Bungalows, Deluxe Suite Bungalows, and the new and exclusive Pool Villas. Each bungalow and villa is constructed in local white granite, with its own private balcony offering glorious views of the rice terraces, the lower Sapa Valley and the Tonkinese Alps beyond.

The rooms are furnished in a cool minimal style in an unmistakably Scandinavian aesthetic, all with ensuite tiled bathrooms. Solar panels heat the water and provide electricity for the lights. Heating is provided during the winter months. There is no television or Wi-Fi in the rooms so be prepared to unplug and reconnect with nature. All bungalows can be configured with either one queen size or two twin beds.

Dining With A Danish Touch

All meals are served in a central two-storey building. Downstairs is a relaxing bar with cushioned furniture, while dining takes place on the upper floor. Topas Ecolodge is flanked by its own farm, which supplies the kitchen with fresh vegetables.

The Danish owners have developed a sustainable food supply system created from premium international ingredients such as imported meats and cheese as well as high-quality local ingredients. The Danish head chef works closely with a local team to create hearty Asian meals, served on a set-menu basis, which changes daily depending on seasonal produce.

Sublime Spa & Infinity Pools

Topas Ecolodge has two infinity pools, both with jaw dropping views of the peaks and valleys. The upper pool has a shallow section suitable for children and is heated with an eco-friendly system using 85% less energy than standard heating technology. The lower pool and jacuzzi is for adults only.

The Rice Spa offers traditional Red Dzao herbal baths and an array of wellness treatments, including massages and facials, created from the combination of ancient knowledge, local materials, and modern techniques. Mountain bikes are available free of charge, and the lodge offers a great range of excursions around the area.

A Base For Exploration

The epic natural scenery and mountain trails surrounding Topas Ecolodge Sapa, make it an ideal base for exploring the awe-inspiring nature of northern Vietnam as well as the diverse minority villages of the area via active pursuits such as hiking and biking as well as cultural immersion through ethnic village visits, market stops, and textile workshops. 3 Day - Hiking Package

Topas Ecolodge to Red Dao village

AM : From 6:30 - 7:00 AM, you will commence from your Hanoi hotel with Topas Mountain Express for 5 hours transfer to Topas Ecolodge. After checking in your bungalow, you will enjoy the beautiful and peaceful view of the surrounding mountains and valleys from your private balcony.

PM : The walk in the afternoon starts from Topas Ecolodge on a quiet road with a great view of the rice terrace below. You then take a slight ascent to Lech village. You will now visit a wooden local house, meet the friendly Red Dao hosts, and experience their daily way of life. The Red Dao women, like their ancestors, have hair and eyes brows shaved and wear very colorful customs. They are famous for beautiful handmade embroidery. On the way back to Topas Ecolodge, you will walk on small trails passing rice terraces and cross a suspension bridge, where you can take some great pictures of the natural landscape. Your guide will explain the interesting cultivating culture of the local farmers.

Explore the most remote area of Sapa

AM : Enjoy a great breakfast and prepare for today ́s walk. At 8:30 AM, you will commence the excursion with a transfer deeper into Hoang Lien National Park to the trek starting point near Sin Chai village. You are now “off the beaten track” enjoying beautiful views of high mountains, waterfalls, and deep valleys. The trails will soon lead you to the Red Dao village of Nam Nhiu, here you will meet the villagers, visit their houses, and learn about their daily way of life. Leaving the village behind, you will turn into a small dirt trail and soon be inspired by the marvelous view of the rice valley dotted with bamboo huts, which are used by local farmers as overnight lodges on harvesting days. Passing the rice terraces and a river you will walk on a quiet road for a while before arriving at Nam Cang village.

PM : Your lunch is served at Topas Riverside Lodge, with jungle behind the lodge and river in front. Nam Cang village is located in the most remote area of Sapa. The Red Dao women wear some of the most colorful and diverse costumes of all of Vietnam’s ethnic groups. Herbal baths, local medicine, and embroidery are some of the things that the Red Dao are very skilled at. Accompanied by your guide, you will explore the village and learn how the local villagers to make writing paper, jewelry, and embroidery. You may also want to take a swim in the river later.

At 14:15, you will have a transfer back to Topas Ecolodge. Here you may want to book a traditional Red Dao herbal bath at the lodge’s spa.

Leaving the mountain and back to Hanoi

AM : The morning is at your leisure at Topas Ecolodge. You can either relax or borrow free of charge high-quality mountain bikes from the lodge for an exploration of the surrounding areas. You can also take a scheduled shuttle bus to Sapa to visit the town or book a half-day tour to explore the highest peak of Indochina, Mt. Fansipan (3.143m) by cable car.

PM : Topas Mountain Express departs from Sapa at 13:15; from Topas Ecolodge at 14:30 and returns you to your hotel in Hanoi.

Sand Bathing

Sand bathing is believed to deliver three to four times the benefits of bathing in an onsen.

The therapeutic benefits of Japan’s volcanic activity extends beyond hot spring pools to the earth itself, with the act of sand bathing being considered an effective treatment for an estimated 300 years. What makes the sand unique is that its heated by the steam of hot spring water that flows beneath it. The weight of the mineral-rich sand on the body is believed to increase the volume of blood pumped out of the heart, improving circulation and stimulating waste secretion. The improvement of 11 body indicators studied by professor Tanaka, Faculty of Medicine, at Kagoshima University has even led to the claim that the beneficial effects of sand bathing are 3 to 4 times those of bathing in a hot spring. While perhaps not the treatment for anyone whose claustrophobic, the sensation feels similar to lying under a warm, weighted blanket.

Try It: Sand bathing is unique to Ibusuki on the southern island of Kyushu. Ibusuki Hakusuikan offers sand bathing in their traditional Yagura-style spa, which also features several indoor and outdoor hot spring pools for bathing afterward.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Lymphatic drainage massages are popular in Japan for reducing bloating, swelling and inflammation.

With massage known to improve circulation and stimulate detoxification, one targeted to the lymphatic system—the network of organs, vessels and tissues that move and drain a fluid called lymph from other parts of your body into your bloodstream—takes these benefits a step further. Similar lymphatic drainage techniques have been gaining popularity in Western facial treatments to reduce puffiness in the face, but this treatment has a similar effect on the body, reducing bloating, swelling and inflammation. By creating inflammation to targeted areas, okyu is believed to encourage healing by increasing blood circulation and encouraging the production of white blood cells. It’s even used as an adjunctive treatment for tuberculosis in developing countries.

Try It: Okyu is not typically offered at hotels as practitioners need a license to perform the treatment. The service is more often found at acupuncture clinics.

The Japanese practice of ‘ shinrin-yoku ,’ or forest bathing, is the simple act of immersing oneself in the forest without distractions (like your phone). While the practice has entered the wellness mainstream in the West, it’s taken very seriously in Japan, as it began as a medicinal practice in the 1980s in response to rising depression and poor health due to urbanization.
