Our Testimonial

Good reviews by clients.

This is probably the most popular day tour from Santa Cruz. You first take a 45 min bus from Puerto Ayora to Ithabaca Canal, then followed by a 2h+ navigation. Along the way, you may want to pray for a fantastic clear skies at Bartolome. Thankfully that was the case for me. Otherwise I would be grouchy. It was the absolute perfect weather. The views are stunning. This day trip is not wildlife focused unlike others. But we still saw penguins, turtles, and sea lions. The afternoon of the day trip is usually spent snorkeling at Sullivan Bay or Chinese Hat, depending on your itinerary.

This was definitely our favorite day trip in the Galapagos! The boat ride from Santa Cruz is roughly 1h45 to 2 hours. On our way there, we past right by Daphne Major, which was a unique small inactive volcano. Once we arrived, we hiked a top the main peak, and looked out towards the stunning famous Galapagos picture showed in all the magazines, and online. The colors are breathtaking, and the landscape as unique as I've ever seen! We then got the chance to snorkel, and saw some of the coolest underwater wildlife ever! I encountered white tip reef sharks, large Stingrays, an abundance of fish, a lonely penguin, and the coolest thing ever, swimming with the Sea Lions! Just an incredible day that I will soon never forget!

The Galapagos archipelago is made up of a lot of intriguing islands, but one of the most scenic is arguably Bartolome Island. Bartolome Island is named after a naturalist friend of Charles Darwin, named Sir Bartholomew James Sullivan, who worked on the HMS Beagle. Incidentally, this man was also the inspiration of the name of Sullivan Bay on Santiago Island, not far from Bartolome Island. The island is just 1.2 square kilometers (or 0.5 square miles). The maximum altitude on the island is just 374 feet, or 114 meters in height. Bartolome Island It is comprised of an extinct volcano, and it is believed to be one of the younger Galapagos Islands. However, it is still 1.5 million to two million years old. Here we will explain everything you need to know regarding your visit to Bartolome Island.

Description

Bartholomew island is the perfect place to be if you were ever curious about the landscape of mars. The Bartholomew island is considered a must visit in the Galapagos Islands . The guide will take to explore a very interesting volcanic setting while taking you to climb the top of a volcano for a 360 view of the island.

tour a bartolome galapagos

When you have a picture if the pinnacle rock from the top of the volcano, you will have the iconic photo of the Galapagos Islands. This is an interesting lava formation that stands out in the horizon. It is also visited by drivers for its lich underwater life. The pinnacle-shaped rock was used for target practice by the US Navy in the Second World War. A naval artillery shell can be seen still lodged in the upper part of the rock. As a result of this, one part of this tuff cone was destroyed.

tour a bartolome galapagos

This bird might look clumsy walking on the rock, short legs and slippery surfaces can be a perfect combination for falling, especially for young unexperice pinguins. The adult knows most of the tricks, jumping, sliding or walking sideway, but an unexpected wave or a sea lion can produce a falling. But underwater is another story, they “flight” gracefully and fast, changing directions and catching elusive fish, some times alone, or in group. Then a break on the surface of the water to breath or to rest. They nest on small cracks or lava tubes near to the shoreline, to avoid long walks.

tour a bartolome galapagos

Brachycereus nesioticus is a very interesting species, the genus is unique for the island. It is a pioneer plant that grows only in lava, one plant is really a colony of individuals. Each of them grow slowly for years, the young looks more yellow, then as the mature turns to red-brown during this stage they can reach 60 cm (23.6 inches) and produce white flowers and small reddish fruits. Then they turn grey and die. The death ones add organic material to the eroded lava (by the actions of the roots) making soil in middle of the lava, where other plants can grow. This species appear only in young islands.

I never have seen a Sealion so close, nor I hadn’t had the chance to swim or to snorkel with these amazing animals. Plus for me Bartholome has been the signature spot of Galapagos. Such a great experience!!

Michael Garcia (verified owner) – February 5, 2022

With everything that Galapagos has to offer, it sounds crazy to chose a winner, but this tour was the peak of our week in Galapagos. There’s a reason you see this view in all Galapagos post-cards. You just have to see it. The snorkeling after at the idyllic beach was also super fun. We saw many parrot fish (the colorful ones with a peak) that were more than half-meter long, we followed a penguin that was hunting sardine-like shiny fishies, plus a shark, plus so many other non-identified gorgeous fish. The crew handled the schedule so well, the lunch was delicious (the cook in the yacht is a true expert, she accommodated the meal of the day to our vegetarian needs and was delicious!). I just can’t speak highly enough of this tour. Super recommended. Thanks so much!!

Grace – February 21, 2022

I am glad You have such a good time! :) Definitely a must see in the Galapagos Islands.

I had such a great time on this Bartolome Island tour. Ecuadortrails arranged this tour for me, and is operated by a local tour operator. Ecuadortrails was quite responsive to my inquiry especially before the start of the tour. Everyone on our group had fun. The hike up was a little challenging, though is quite doable, and that’s coming from someone who doesn’t hike normally. Afterwards we got got see quite a bit of underwater wildlife during our snorkeling session, which includes some playful sea lions, stingray, and whitetip sharks. Overall I highly recommend booking this trip through Ecuadortrails, since they offer the best price of any tour/travel agency I found. Thanks again Ecuadortrails!

The Bartolome Island Tour is the most iconic tour you can do on the Galapagos islands.

You will go on a gorgeous sailing ship starting at Santa Cruz island, passing through the Daphne islands, and arrive at the beautiful Bartolomé island, almost an islet from Santiago island.

With luck, you might spot some penguins as we did and then you go snorkel on one of the paradisiac beaches in the near.

BARTOLOME ISLAND TOUR curiosities

The name of the island comes from Charles Darwin’s friend Bartholomew James Sullivan who was the principal surveyor and second lieutenant aboard the HMS Beagle .

Bartolomé is a volcanic tuff islet on the east side of Santiago island.

It is the most photographed place in the Galapagos archipelago.

The most iconic part of the island is the Pinnacle Rock.

According to the official Galapagos Conservancy website , the Pinnacle Rock is a volcanic cone , it was formed when magma was expelled from an underwater volcano; the sea cooled the hot lava, which then exploded, only to come together and form this huge rock made up of many thin layers of basalt”

American airmen troops used the pinnacle as a target during WWII .

It is one of the younger islands in the Galapagos archipelago.

The Pinnacle Rock appeared in the movie Master and Commander , with Russel Crowe.

HOW TO DO THE BARTOLOME ISLAND TOUR?

You have to book the tour with a travel agency. I booked with Galapagos Dreams and they picked me up at my hotel at 6 am.

Yes, 6 am. If you come to the Galapagos and don’t want to spend your entire day at the beach, expect the tours to start around that time.

Especially diving tours and tours that you need to drive a long way so they can start, like this one.

The van picks you up and some other people in the other hotels and drives all the way through the island until it reaches the Itabaca Channel, from where the ferries to Baltra island depart, the boats to the diving spots, and the one to Bartolomé.

MY EXPERIENCE ON THE BARTOLOME ISLAND TOUR FROM SANTA CRUZ, GALAPAGOS

This was my fifth day on Santa Cruz island, I had already seen most of the island and I was almost fully recovered from my food poisoning from two days ago.

This is therefore the third island I visited on the Galapagos and I was based in Santa Cruz so it was a Full Day tour.

Here I leave you with the other attractions you can find on the gorgeous Santa Cruz island. You can also  (click here)  to see my other adventures in Ecuador.

THE SAILING SHIP EXPERIENCE

After picking me up at 5:30h we went to pick up some other people at their hotels and we drove off for 1 hour to Itabaca Channel.

Once we got there we got on a  rubber boat that took us to our big sailing ship.

Inside we were greeted by the crew and started the trip to Bartolomé Island.

As soon as we got in we left our shoes in a container, dropped our backpacks and went for breakfast inside the ship.

One hour after starting the trip we passed through Daphne Mayor and Daphne Minor islands.

Two hours later we reached Bartolomé Island. It is a 3-hour ride. There wasn’t much wind so we didn’t use the sails.

On the way, you can go to the front of the ship and observe, together with the guide, jumping manta rays, turtles, many different birds, and flying fishes.

Our guide was specially trained in spotting wildlife which was great.

Once we arrived at Bartolomé Island we went down from the ship to the same rubber boat from the start and we were dropped at a little port full of Grapsus Grapsus orange crabs.

The beginning of the sailing trip

EXPLORING BARTOLOME ISLAND

Once we arrived at the island we immediately spotted a lonely penguin swimming around and many orange crabs, what a delight.

The main attraction on this island is the viewpoint at the top of the island but for me the entire environment is unbelievable.

You are dropped on a volcanic desertic yellow-brownish landscape surrounded by blue-turquoise water full of colorful crabs and white moss-like plants.

Then we started climbing to the viewpoint and the guide starts explaining to us about these incredibly resistant plants and some cacti that live with almost no water.

It’s a really arid landscape so it’s impressive that there’s life at all on the island. We could spot some lava lizards too.

Along the way, you see volcanic cones, or collapsed ones, and lava tunnels. He told us when he was young and there weren’t many restrictions in Galapagos he could go inside these volcanic cones with his friends and clients.

He showed us that most of the rocks you see look quite big and heavy but are actually very light.

After climbing for let’s say half an hour with stops we arrived at the viewpoint and stood there appreciating and taking some photos.

You could see from up there how huge Santiago island is in the background and it has a much different landscape than Bartolomé.

It’s very green and it had had a quite “recent” eruption so you could see the lava flow on its shores.

Then it was time to go down and do some snorkeling.

Spotting penguins as soon as we arrived to the little pier.

SNORKELING AROUND THE ISLAND AND THE RETURN TO SANTA CRUZ

And to conclude our tour we went snorkeling between Bartolomé and Santiago islands.

We saw so much life, comparable to a scuba dive day really.

There were multiple black and whitetip reef sharks, huge schools of fish, turtles, many many gorgeous starfish, and penguins.

There was a cave with four or five sleeping blacktip reef sharks, there were many king angelfish and yellow-tailed surgeon fish, some puffer fish, incredible really.

The coolest and most unexpected thing I saw while snorkeling was the lava tunnels underwater.

That I had never seen, even scuba diving. Amazing, it looked like man-made structures.

And that was it, after snorkeling, we went back to the boat and had again a 3-hour journey back to Santa Cruz. This was by far one of the coolest tours I have done on the Galapagos. Totally worth the money.

What about you, have you already done the Bartolomé Island full-day tour? Leave me a comment down here if you have and what was your opinion.

Thanks for reading through and I hope you have fun on this tour!

I’ll drop a couple of my other favorite photos from the tour down below, enjoy!

Galapagos Adventure: The Must-Visit Islands on the Archipelago

One of the most important things to remember when deciding which islands to visit is to check beforehand with the agency or the cruise line of the proposed itinerary package. Another thing that has a particular influence on the decision is your budget and preferences.

Book a Cruise

We’ll discuss some of the famous islands to visit on your Galapagos islands excursions . However, it’s worth mentioning that the mode of transport plays a significant role in whether the trip will go smoothly.

Per most travelers’ experiences, Galapagos is best explored via a cruise. It’s one of the biggest cruising destinations, along with the Arctic and Antarctica, so if you’ve always dreamed of visiting the islands, this is your chance to book one!

Since we said we’ll talk about the islands you must visit, let’s dive into it! Without further ado, let’s see which Galapagos islands are must-visit destinations!

Galapagos Islands to Visit

Learn more about the Galapagos islands and the logistics when planning your trip.

Bartolome Island is an uninhabited island with notable wildlife, including the marine iguana, penguins, and sea lions. The top attractions you mustn’t miss are Pinnacle Rock , the colorful volcanic sceneries, and the snorkeling activities.

The island is also known as the most photographed one since it’s filled with breathtaking rock formations that are the residue of volcanic activities. If you reach the highest peak, Pinnacle Rock, you can see more than 10 surrounding islands on a clear day.

Santa Cruz is known for its developed tourist infrastructure and the city of Puerto Ayora. Many connecting flights pass through this island, so you can book a quick tour and visit some of the top tourist attractions.

The top attractions include the Charles Darwin Research Center , Puerto Ayora, Los Gemelos, the lava tunnels, and Tortuga Bay beach. The Charles Darwin Research Center is UNESCO -founded, built in 1959, and the backbone of the giant Galapagos restoration. Make sure to visit the giant tortoise reserve and the twin pit craters. Additionally, you can walk through the lava tunnels and see the geological island formations.

The English name for the Genovesa island is Tower Island . It’s another uninhabited island. However, it has its animal inhabitants. The main wildlife species you’ll notice on the island are the red-footed boobies, the swallow-tailed gulls, the short-eared owls, and the frigatebirds.

The top attractions in Genovesa are Prince Philip’s Steps and Darwin Bay. Besides its attractions, Genovesa is particularly popular for its wildlife , which leads to its name, “a bird island.”

The Prince Philip’s Steps are 81 stairs of steep, rocky cliffs that follow a narrow path through a forest and lead to an open lava field. It’s a must-visit attraction!

The logistics part of the trip includes:

  • Determine the season when you’ll be traveling; May is the mating season, so you can observe some mating rituals performed by the endemic species (of course, if you’re a wildlife fanatic);
  • You can’t get to Genovesa on an island-hopping tour, so make sure to check with the cruise whether they have it included in the itinerary, as not all of them make a stop here;

San Cristobal

San Cristobal, also known as Chatham island, is home to the red and blue-footed boobies and the giant tortoises. The island is located 600 miles from Ecuador and on the easternmost part of the archipelago.

The early formation of the island lies in the fusion of the ancient, extinct volcanoes, which gives the island a rocky formation.

A fun fact - San Cristobal was the first Galapagos island to become inhabited by humans permanently. The original settlers built their homes in the El Junco region , drawn by the crystal clear lake waters and its surroundings.

The largest settlement on the island is Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, and it’s considered the capital of the Galapagos province.

Kicker Rock is a rocky area surrounded by diving and snorkeling spots, so if you decide to go hiking and climb to the top, a breathtaking view awaits you.

The top attractions you must visit are Kicker Rock, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, La Galapaguera, El Junco Lake, and Cerro Brujo.

Regarding the logistics, you can take a flight or book a cruise that includes the island in its itineraries.

Book Your Cruise

Now that you’re familiar with the islands and logistics of each, it’s time to book your cruise. Make sure to book well in advance since some itineraries can be booked a year in advance.
