graphite design tour shafts e1594668066713

And speaking of precision, this shaft offers unmatched control, allowing you to shape your shots with ease. Whether you need a fade or a draw, this shaft will help you hit your target with pinpoint accuracy. But it doesn't stop there. The Graphite Design Tour AD DI Hybrid 85 shaft also delivers optimal energy transfer, giving you that extra power and distance you've been craving. Say goodbye to those weak shots that fall short of the green. With this shaft, you'll be hitting it long and strong.

Updated February 2024 to update current pricing information.

Golfers are becoming more aware of the benefits of being properly fit for their equipment. Longer distances, more accuracy, and lower scores can all be achieved by getting the right equipment for your swing. Although it is common place for many golfers, the fittings often stop at drivers and irons. Golfers neglect their fairway woods, wedges, putters, and importantly, hybrids. Getting a whole bag fitting is the best way to make sure there are no holes in your bag. Hybrids especially can be versatile clubs that can allow golfer to lay up, attack par-3 holes, and escape trouble from around the course. Matching the hybrid club head to a high performance shaft can unlock swing benefits you have likely never experienced if you have never been fit for a hybrid or tired the Graphite Design Tour AD hybrid shafts.

What is a specialized hybrid shaft?

Each golf club loads and unloads differently. Hybrids have a wide range of clubhead weights, shapes, and configurations that require more attention that some golfers realize. The industry leader in hybrid shaft performance is, without question, Graphite Design. Their Tour AD DI Hybrid shaft is among the favorites for professional club fitters and professional players. Beyond the AD DI, Graphite Design also offers a slightly higher launching Tour AD IZ shaft and a hybrid specific AD HY (Hybrid) shaft. We put all three of these shafts to the test to see what differences they can offer to different golfers.

Graphite Design Hybrid Shafts

Graphite design tour ad di hybrid shaft.

The Tour AD DI is unmistakable and the performance of the shaft matches. Made with high modulus aerospace quality carbon fiber and the Material Stiffness Integration (MSI) the Tour AD DI is a complete hybrid shaft offering. Billed as a mid launch, low to mid spin golf shaft, the AD DI will fit a wide range of golfers and swing styles. Notably, the AD DI is the only Graphite Design Hybrid offered in weights above 100-grams.

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Hybrid Shaft

The Graphite Design Tour AD IZ is slightly higher launching compared to the Tour AD DI. The Tour AD IZ is well suited for golfers looking to gain more height for approaching greens, especially on longer holes. Golfers looking to elevate lower lofted hybrids will also love the efficiency of this shaft and how easy it is to swing. The AD IZ is the perfect complement to the AD DI and great for golfers looking to secure the middle part of their golf bag.

Graphite Design Tour AD HY Shaft

The AD HY hybrid shaft is the highest launching hybrid specific shaft from Graphite Design. The Tour AD HY is perfect for golfers that present slower speeds to the ball or that need to increase their launch angles coming from the fairways and roughs. If you struggle getting your golf ball into the air, the AD HY is the shaft for you.

Our Experience

Getting fit for your hybrids and then building the shaft to match your specific delivery conditions is the best route to ensure you get the most performance possible from your hybrids. Graphite Design shafts stand out as the best for golfers that demand performance throughout the middle of their golf bags. Other premium options are available but the matrix of the Tour AD DI, Tour AD IZ, and Tour AD HY offer almost everything golfers need in three easy models. My favorite is the Tour AD DI and I love the offering in my driving iron and hybrids. Overall, I saw better distance control and more accuracy coming from the fairway with the Tour AD DI over all competing hybrid shafts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this shaft be customized to a different length or weight.

Yes, this shaft can be customized to different lengths and weights. Customized modifications can optimize shaft performance for individual players. I’d recommend consulting with a professional club fitter for personalized adjustments.

What Is the Warranty or Guarantee on This Shaft?

The warranty of this shaft is like a safety net for your game. Graphite Design offers a 1-year warranty for manufacturing defects. Customization options are available for length and weight, ensuring ideal swing characteristics and club compatibility.

Are There Any Specific Swing Characteristics or Playing Styles That This Shaft Is Best Suited For?

I find that the Graphite Design Tour AD DI Hybrid Shaft is best suited for players with a smooth swing tempo and seeking a mid-high shot trajectory. The stiff flex and advanced graphite material properties contribute to its performance.

How Does the Torque of This Shaft Compare to Other Models?

In comparison to other models, the torque of this shaft is lower, offering increased stability and control. Shaft customization allows for fine-tuning to match individual swing characteristics and playing styles, enhancing overall performance on the course.

Can This Shaft Be Used for Both Hybrid and Fairway Wood Clubs?

Absolutely, this shaft is versatile and compatible with both hybrid and fairway wood clubs. Its design and flex make it a top choice for players seeking high performance across different clubs in their bag.

Each golfer is different, and those differences are exaggerated in the hybrid sections of the golf bag. As some of the longest clubs players frequently hit from the ground, hybrids can be the most difficult to get fit correctly. Do not just think that what shaft you put into your driver will be best as you move into other graphite shafts. Each club should fit a specific role and building it to fit you is the best approach. The complete offering Graphite Design has for golfers of all swing types and speeds is impressive. No matter what you are looking for, Graphite Design can dial you in with one of their Tour AD offerings. Low, middle, and high launch offerings make it easy to get your ideal flight. We recommend using a professional club fitter to help you find yours today.

Shaft Test: Graphite Design’s new Tour AD-TP versus the famous Tour AD-DI

tour ad di 85 vs 95

With a similar profile to the company’s famous Tour AD-DI shaft, and a few new technologies for a slightly different ball flight, Graphite Design’s new Tour AD-TP shaft will surely entice a legion of high-spin golfers.

The new shafts are made for a mid launch and low spin rates, according to Graphite Design’s website, while the Tour AD-DI shafts are made for mid/high to high launch angles and low to low/mid spin rates. Certainly, they are in the same wheelhouse, but for anyone looking to create a slightly more penetrating ball flight with lower launch and lower spin, the new shaft could be their winning ticket.

Tour_AD_TP_Hero

To accomplish its performance, the AD-TP shafts are made with a faster taper rate from the lower-mid section to the tip of the shaft, and use an all-new graphite material from Toray Industries called T1100G carbon fiber pre-preg. They also use Toray’s Nanoalloy technology in the tip section, which was first introduced in Graphite Design’s Tour AD-DI. It help golfers gain more control of the club face by resisting torque.  Read more about the Tour AD-TP shaft’s tech here .

Here’s the bend profile of the Tour AD-TP shafts, according to Graphite Design’s website:

GraphiteDesignTourADshafts

And here’s how the Tour AD-TP shafts stack up versus the other Tour AD shafts:

Screen Shot 2016-10-26 at 12.13.37 PM

As you can see, the Tour AD-TP (top row) compared to the Tour AD-DI (bottom row) will have a firmer mid and butt section, but will also have the familiar stiff tip section.

Personally, I’ve tested just about every new mainstream driver shaft that’s come out in the past three years, and I just haven’t been able to find something that matches my swing like the Tour AD-DI. As a golfer who fights a nasty hook and too much spin, it’s the stiffness and stability of the tip of the shaft that makes me comfortable enough to “go at it.” I’m also a Mets fan, so I like the orange color.

Tour_AD-DI_ORange

But for whatever reason, my golfing brain finds other shafts to load and unload way differently, either forcing me to flip or block drives, leading to tragic results. So although I often test the latest and greatest golf shafts for you, the GolfWRX readers, I’ve all but given up on other shafts making it into my gamer driver. Yes, other shafts have given me “more optimal” numbers in a Trackman environment, but there’s nothing optimal about feeling like you’re going to duck hook the ball off the planet with OB stakes left.

When Graphite Design announced a new shaft with a similar profile that’s made to create a slightly more penetrating trajectory, however, I’ll admit I was excited to try it. Let’s see how the numbers played out.

The Numbers

AD_TP_DI_7X

I tested my Tour AD-DI gamer shaft (45.5 inches, tipped 1 inch) against a Tour AD-TP shaft (45.5 inches, untipped) and a Tour AD-TP shaft (45.5 inches, tipped 1 inch) in a TaylorMade M1 460 head (10.5 degrees) set to neutral. Yes, I have a bit more swing speed in the tank than displayed below, but it’s also late October and I don’t want to have a blown out back all winter. I conducted my testing at the Launch Pad at Carl’s Golfland on TrackMan 4 using premium golf balls.

GDDriverShafts20162_arrows

Magenta = Tour AD-TP (tipped 1 inch)

Observations

— Shots with the un-tipped shaft trended to the right. It felt like the face was opening on the downswing and I couldn’t turn my shots over. The data solidifies for me that performance matches my feel, and that I do indeed need a tipped shaft.

— The AD-DI shaft had the highest spin (2953 rpm), highest landing angle, most height (122.1 feet) and launched the highest (13.7 degrees).

— The AD-TP (tipped 1 inch) carried 4.9 yards shorter than the Tour AD-DI, but went 3.7 yards longer in total. This shows how much more penetrating the ball flight with a AD-TP shaft can be.

— Spin rate dropped from 2953 rpm with the Tour AD-DI (tipped 1 inch) to 2460 rpm with the AD-TP (tipped 1 inch).

— With nearly identical clubhead speed, ball speed and smash factors, it’s clear the Tour AD-TP was offering better numbers and tighter dispersion for me.

The Takeaway

Accuracy_and_Distance

The Graphite Design Tour AD-TP shaft is currently selling for $500 at retail. Based on the improvement I saw in my numbers, I would say that the new shaft is worth the value for my swing. The profile and new materials are a match for me in regards to ball flight characteristics and feel. I would describe the feel as “smooth-stiff, with a stable tip.”

Of course, it’s important to undergo a proper fitting, as you saw that the un-tipped version of the Tour AD-GP shaft was giving me fits. But, if you’re like me and struggle with high spin rates and inconsistency, the Tour AD-TP shaft may help you find more accuracy… and a bit more distance, too.

Andrew, the author of this review, comments about hitting duck hooks because that is his miss when he uses a shaft that doesn’t “fit” his swing style. It is the same issue I fight. The fact he has peppered the right side of the grid would be comforting for him. All in all, Andrew fits the new TP shaft pretty well.

Some shafts get progressively weaker to the tip (Rogue, AD-DI), many increase stiffness into the tip (most other GD tour AD models, Kuro Kage) To assume all shafts need to be tipped just seems uninformed. Tipping off stiffness in a shaft like a AD-BB is just going to lower the kick point and give you a softer tip; exact opposite of tipping a AD-DI.

Oct 30, 2016 at 11:05 pm

Wow the author tried really hard to say this is better. The chart looks pretty much the same for all three shafts as far as landing zone. Just one leftward (I’m guess more of a hook) shot skewed the oval left. Unless he’s a left hander, none of his shots were hooks, rather either push or slices. Strange for him to say that he’s fighting a hook when he didn’t hit any.

The real difference does seem to be one offering more roll and one more carry due to launch angle changes I’m guessing due to the stiffer mid and butt sections. Worth it? The argument seems a bit thin.

Adam Scott testing green “Masters Use Only” putter + 6 interesting equipment photos from the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson

tour ad di 85 vs 95

Welcome to the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson event at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas, which, for your geographical reference, is about 25 minutes from Dallas.

In early-week equipment news, we saw some interesting putter testing from Adam Scott, a Maxfli golf ball signing on the PGA Tour, a 16-year-old’s WITB, a PGA Tour player using another PGA Tour player’s backup putter, and Jordan Spieth weighed in on why he recently switched out just his 7-iron (and then made a hole-in-one with it).

With so much to report and so little time to waste on the intro, let’s get right into this week’s equipment rundown from the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.

See all of our photo galleries from the week here

Adam Scott’s new L.A.B. putters

tour ad di 85 vs 95

Before we get into a couple of the new prototypes Scott has been testing, above is a photo of the L.A.B. Golf Mezz.1 Max prototype putter that he’s been using, and will likely continue to use this week in Texas.

That being said, following the Masters, Scott was looking to try a couple putters with a slightly lighter weight to help with his feel on fast greens.

One of the new prototypes we spotted on Tuesday was a L.A.B. Golf DF3 “Proto 2.1”, custom-built with Scott’s preferred blue colorway, and an Australia-inspired Kangaroo laser engraving…

tour ad di 85 vs 95

We also spotted him with a green-colored “For Masters Use Only” Mezz.1 Max prototype…

While it’s unlikely Scott will make a switch this week, it’s certainly something to keep an eye on going forward, especially on courses with faster greens.

tour ad di 85 vs 95

We also got a peek into Scott’s full WITB this week, which consists of a super-mixed set of Srixon irons, including a ZX Utility 3-iron, a ZX-5 MkII 4-iron, ZX-7 MkII mid-irons (5-7) and Z Forged II short irons (8-9).

See Scott’s full WITB from the CJ Cup here

An update on Daniel Berger’s Odyssey Jailbird

tour ad di 85 vs 95

Last week in New Orleans, we highlighted Daniel Berger’s Ai-One Jailbird Mini putter because of its unique sightlines.

Well, we have an update.

According to Callaway Tour Manager Joe Toulon, who spoke with GolfWRX.com this week, Berger’s Jailbird Mini is actually from fellow Tour player Tom Kim’s stash. Kim is a prolific putter tester, and the exact putter Berger is currently using was actually originally made for and tested by Kim. The putter didn’t make it into Kim’s starting lineup, however, so he gave the putter back to Odyssey, and it eventually made it’s way onto Berger’s gamer roster.

Jordan Spieth’s new 7-iron

tour ad di 85 vs 95

As the story goes, Jordan Spieth changed out his Titleist T100 7-iron on Wednesday before the 2024 Valero Texas Open, and then on Thursday, he used the 7-iron to make a hole-in-one from 199 yards on the 16th hole.

Good timing on that switch, Jordan.

On Tuesday at the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson, GoflWRX.com caught up with Spieth to get the full story on why he switched just the 7-iron.

Our full story is over on PGATOUR.com’s Equipment Report , but here’s a snippet of what Spieth had to say:

“I hit my 7-iron a lot, especially on my own. The spin rates, relative to my 6-iron and my 8-iron, were lower, so it was going too far. I was trying to figure out why, if it was something in the makeup of the iron. I got the lies and the lofts checked, and everything was fine. So finally I was like, ‘Can I just get a new one and see if it fixes it?’

“Maybe there was one other time throughout my career where I changed just one iron, so it’s very unusual. I think it’s just because the grooves were worn down from hitting it too much.”

Ben Griffin signs with Maxfli to play the golf ball

tour ad di 85 vs 95

At the beginning of the year, LPGA Tour star Lexi Thompson signed a deal with Maxfli to play the company’s golf ball, and now, Griffin has officially joined team Maxfli, as well, thus expanding the company’s Tour presence.

GolfWRX.com caught up with Griffin on Wednesday in Texas for a video interview about his new golf ball of choice, and how he marks it…

A 16-year-old is playing on the PGA Tour this week, using a 2-iron!

tour ad di 85 vs 95

Amateur golfer Kris Kim, at just 16 years of age, is making his PGA Tour debut this week after receiving a sponsors exemption into the event. In 2023, Kim won both the R&A Boys’ Amateur Championship and the European Boys’ International Championship.

On Tuesday in Texas, we got a look into Kim’s bag, which revealed that he’s currently playing a TaylorMade P-770 2-iron, and a bag full of TaylorMade clubs.

Check out Kim’s full WITB here

A smart golf ball stamping

I’m not going to sit here and pretend to be a big math guy, because I’m not. However, I do recognize David Nyfjall’s purple ball marking as a square root symbol.

While I don’t know the particular significance of the square root symbol for Nyfjall, I do know you have to be fairly intelligent to even consider using a marking like that. Pretty cool stuff from the Northwestern alum, and 2023 Byron Nelson Award winner.

And, with that, we say goodbye to Texas and TPC Craig Ranch. We’ll see you next week at the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte for more insider equipment news and storylines.

I would like to get some input/review/comparison for those who have tried both the hybrid version of these shafts.

Thinking of installing them in an UDI but not sure which would suit better.

I have both the IZ and DI hybrid shafts in Ping G410 heads and find the IZ to be slightly firmer in feel than the DI , but still smooth.  Maybe the IZ flies on a slightly higher trajectory than the DI

Different strokes for different folks.  I had the DI in my driver for 5 years.  It was a love/hate relationship.  One hole I hit a 300+ yard bomb, the next a duck hook that disappeared into the bushes

Personally, I like the IZ a lot better and I've tested both shafts.  DI felt too soft and was loose for me.  IZ feels more stout and launches a touch higher which is what you would want in a UDI as they tend to fly lower anyway.  Just by looking at your setup, I can see that you prefer a shaft that launches higher so I would recommend the IZ.

My opinion is the opposite. You are not wrong and I’m not right but I prefer the DI to the IZ in driver and hybrid

Don’t think that one necessarily out-performs the other; it just comes down to preferred feel.  I have read here in WRX that the IZ feels more “one piece” so you don’t feel it flex as much as the DI. I believe that to be accurate based on my experience with these shafts.

Bottom line is you can’t go wrong with either one.

Have both and this is good description.

  2. Graphite Designs Tour AD DI Shaft Review

Every shot was near the center of the face, and the monitor was showing the same push-draw time after time. For players who haven't hit Graphite Designs shafts and can't make use of their feel chart, I would say that the AD DI is a mix of the Diamana Blue and White shafts. It has the smooth feel and pronounced kick of the blue with the ...

  6. Graphite Design Tour AD DI Shaft Review

The Graphite Design Tour AD DI utilizes aerospace-grade, high modulus 50-ton carbon fiber in order to stiffen the tip section. While the mid and butt sections are of medium stiffness, the tip is stiff in order to promote acute club head control. This is part of what produces such tight shot dispersion. 7. Tour AD DI Hybrid Shaft Review

The Tour AD DI Hybrid, even in stiff flex felt remarkably smooth but gave the accuracy of a stiff shaft. I plugged the Tour AD DI into my 4-hybrid and my spin rates stayed in the 3500 and 400 RPM spin range. This allowed me to thread the needle on narrow fairways and deftly avoid hazards. The torque was perfect for me but you can get less or ...

  8. Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Hybrid Shaft Review

NOTE: There are two different profiles in the Tour AD IZ hybrid shaft. The 85 and 95 gram versions are stiffer in the tip and softer in the mid and butt. The 65 and 75 gram versions are stiffer in the tip and mid, softer in the butt. My comments relate to the 85 gram version that I tested. Performance

The Graphite Design Tour AD DI Hybrid 85 shaft also delivers optimal energy transfer, giving you that extra power and distance you've been craving. 11. Pros Choice Shaft Review: Graphite Design Iron Shafts

The Tour AD-65, AD-75 AD-85 and AD-95 weights feature a mid-kick point designed for a mid to mid/high ball flight and mid spin rates. Do as I did, take advantage of the superior distance with precise accuracy that Graphite Design shafts can offer and give the Tour AD premium Iron graphite shafts a try in your next set of irons. MSRP: $115.

  12. Shaft Test: Graphite Design's new Tour AD-TP versus the famous Tour AD-DI

The Numbers. Yes, I have a bit more swing speed in the tank than displayed below, but it's also late October and I don't want to have a blown out back all winter.

  17. Shaft Review

The Tour AD IZ wood shaft will help produce higher launch angles than normal and lower spin (for 4 of the 5 weight classes: IZ-5, -6, -7, and -8). With the shaft having a firmer grip section, a slightly softer mid section, and back to a moderate tip section, this helps load the shaft for efficient energy transfer and higher shots, all while ...

  18. Anyone gaming Tour AD DI or Tour AD HY in their hybrid?

Assuming you mean hybrid/Driving iron shafts.. the utility iron shaft is .355 and profiled for an iron head. There are also regular "tour ad iron shafts" that are spec'd differently as well. The regular "Tour AD DI" is the line of wood and hybrid shafts. Depends which you are comparing too.

  19. Graphite Design Tour AD Utility / Driving Iron Shaft

It appears to have a similar profile to the Tour AD hybrid shaft. Graphite Design describes the tour AD utility as mid launch with mid spin while the tour AD DI hybrid is mid launch with mid/low spin. I put a steelfiber 95 in my driving iron. No shaft seems straighter. I'm considering ordering the Tour AD 95 X version from Will People's to test ...
