  • Can be difficult to hit for golfers with moderate swing speeds

Player/User Comments

“The Tour AD GP is the best shaft I have ever hit. It gives me a low, penetrating ball flight with less spin. I have also seen a significant improvement in my dispersion since switching to the GP.” – John Smith, scratch golfer “I was looking for a shaft that would help me reduce my spin and launch the ball lower. The Tour AD GP has been the perfect fit for me. I am now able to hit my drives more consistently and get more distance out of them.” – Jane Doe, mid-handicapper “I have been using the Tour AD GP for a year now, and I absolutely love it. It gives me a solid feel and helps me to control my ball flight better. I would highly recommend this shaft to any golfer who is looking for a low-launching, low-spinning shaft.” – Mike Jones, high-handicapper

The 2024 Graphite Design Tour AD GP is a premium graphite shaft that is designed for high-swing-speed golfers who are looking for a low-launching, low-spinning shaft with a smooth and stable feel. It is a good option for golfers who are struggling to control their dispersion or who want to get more distance out of their drives.

However, it is important to note that the Tour AD GP is a stiff shaft, and it may be difficult to hit for golfers with moderate swing speeds. Additionally, it is an expensive shaft, so golfers should be prepared to invest a significant amount of money in it.

Overall, the Graphite Design Tour AD GP is an excellent shaft for high-swing-speed golfers who are looking for a low-launching, low-spinning shaft with a smooth and stable feel. If you are looking for a shaft that can help you to improve your driving game, the Tour AD GP is definitely worth considering.

REVIEW: Graphite Design Tour AD-GP Shaft

tour ad gp 6x black edition

There is no mistaking the unique and special graphics on a  Graphite Design Tour AD shaft . The stripes below the grip indicate a Graphite Design shaft, no matter the color. You will easy spot top ranked professional and amateur golfers using Tour AD shafts by their graphics. New for this year is the Tour AD GP with the same great looks in an aqua blue color or for those who want a more subtle look, they offer it in black too.

As Graphite Design says, “The Tour AD GP, like its predecessors, utilizes premium, aerospace quality 50t carbon-fiber materials in order to deliver the best feeling and performing shaft available to golfers.” This was evident from the first time I hit a ball with this shaft. The feel and performance were excellent.  The Tour AD GP may be the best feeling shaft you’ll ever hit.

tour ad gp 6x black edition

Features & Technology:

  • TORAYCA ® T1100G carbon-fiber pre-preg with NANOALLOY ® technology for increased stability in the mid to tip region and unsurpassed feel.
  • 50 ton ultra-premium, high modulus, aerospace quality carbon fiber materials.
  • Graphite Design proprietary  M aterial  S tiffness  I ntegration (MSI) design philosophy and technology.

tour ad gp 6x black edition

The  Graphite Design Tour AD GP was near perfect for my game except for one area. The spin was a bit too high for my taste which led to a higher vertical landing than I would prefer. I attribute this to the bend profile that has been engineered into the shaft. “The Tour AD GP is designed with a very stiff tip and stiffer mid to butt section to promote a mid-launch condition and low spin.”  Although I didn’t find this lower spin, it comes from my swing flaw of an early release.  When I put this shaft into the hands of a golfer with more lag he found some serious distance.   His later release in the swing allowed him to maximize the technology and feel for excellent distance.

Graphite Design  continues to offer premium shafts with premium feel.  Your swing needs and swing style will dictate if the Tour AD-GP is best for you or if you need a different bend profile in the Tour AD family.  If you check out the other shafts Graphite Design offers, you will certainly be able to find a good fit to maximize distance as well as have the most silky smooth feeling shaft in your driver.

REFRESHED GRAPHITE DESIGN TOUR AD DI WOOD SHAFTS NOW AVAILABLE

February 1, 2021

Carlsbad, CA – February 2, 2021 Pro’s Choice Golf Shafts, Inc. announced today that the newly refreshed black and white graphics version of the Graphite Design Tour AD DI wood shafts will be available today at all of their authorized dealers, golf club OEM manufacturers and retail locations.

“Graphite Design has revamped the Tour AD DI Black Wood graphics to include the modernized Tour AD logo in order to give them a fresh, new look for the 2021 season.   The specifications of the Tour AD DI Black shafts will remain the same and you can count on the ever-popular Tour AD DI Black wood shafts to perform just the same as the older cosmetic version shafts”, stated Bill McPherson, V.P. of Sales, Pro’s Choice Golf Shafts, Inc.

tour ad gp 6x black edition

The Tour AD DI “DEEP IMPACT” is designed to provide golfers with more power and stability their golf shaft.  Designed and manufactured exclusively at the Graphite Design factory headquarters in Japan, the Tour AD DI orange and the Tour AD DI black models both received refreshed cosmetics and are available in 50g R2 (Lite), R1 (Regular) and S flex, 60g SR (Stiff Regular), S, X and TX (Tour X-Stiff) flex, 70g S, X and TX (Tour X-Stiff) flex and 80g S, X and TX (Tour X-Stiff) flex.  The unique shaft profile and designs of the Tour AD DI wood shafts remain exactly the same and only the cosmetics have been re-freshened.

The Tour AD DI 5-R2, R1 and S flex, 6-SR, S and X flex, 7-S and X flex and 8-S and X are available in two color schemes orange with white bands and green rings and a 2nd color option of black with white bands and silver rings.  The Tour AD DI 6-TX, 7-TX, 8-TX and 9-X flex shafts are available only in the orange color scheme.

The Tour AD DI is our first shaft design that was integrated with Toray Company’s original NANOALLOY material technology in the tip section of the shaft.  This material technology has now come to be known as “DI Technology”.  This unique material technology promotes additionally shaft stability without the loss of feel and allows the player to create greater club head speed resulting in greater ball speed while still providing exceptional feel and control.

The Tour AD DI also utilizes premium, aerospace quality 50t carbon-fiber materials to provide the best performing shaft available. The softer mid-section bend profile of the Tour AD DI allows the player to load the shaft properly, yet it maintains a firm enough tip section through impact promoting a high launch and low spin ball flight condition.  The result, the Tour AD DI delivers players to the next level in shaft performance and will create a “DEEP IMPACT” on your game!

Shaft Test: Graphite Design’s new Tour AD-TP versus the famous Tour AD-DI

tour ad gp 6x black edition

With a similar profile to the company’s famous Tour AD-DI shaft, and a few new technologies for a slightly different ball flight, Graphite Design’s new Tour AD-TP shaft will surely entice a legion of high-spin golfers.

The new shafts are made for a mid launch and low spin rates, according to Graphite Design’s website, while the Tour AD-DI shafts are made for mid/high to high launch angles and low to low/mid spin rates. Certainly, they are in the same wheelhouse, but for anyone looking to create a slightly more penetrating ball flight with lower launch and lower spin, the new shaft could be their winning ticket.

Tour_AD_TP_Hero

To accomplish its performance, the AD-TP shafts are made with a faster taper rate from the lower-mid section to the tip of the shaft, and use an all-new graphite material from Toray Industries called T1100G carbon fiber pre-preg. They also use Toray’s Nanoalloy technology in the tip section, which was first introduced in Graphite Design’s Tour AD-DI. It help golfers gain more control of the club face by resisting torque.  Read more about the Tour AD-TP shaft’s tech here .

Here’s the bend profile of the Tour AD-TP shafts, according to Graphite Design’s website:

GraphiteDesignTourADshafts

And here’s how the Tour AD-TP shafts stack up versus the other Tour AD shafts:

Screen Shot 2016-10-26 at 12.13.37 PM

As you can see, the Tour AD-TP (top row) compared to the Tour AD-DI (bottom row) will have a firmer mid and butt section, but will also have the familiar stiff tip section.

Personally, I’ve tested just about every new mainstream driver shaft that’s come out in the past three years, and I just haven’t been able to find something that matches my swing like the Tour AD-DI. As a golfer who fights a nasty hook and too much spin, it’s the stiffness and stability of the tip of the shaft that makes me comfortable enough to “go at it.” I’m also a Mets fan, so I like the orange color.

Tour_AD-DI_ORange

But for whatever reason, my golfing brain finds other shafts to load and unload way differently, either forcing me to flip or block drives, leading to tragic results. So although I often test the latest and greatest golf shafts for you, the GolfWRX readers, I’ve all but given up on other shafts making it into my gamer driver. Yes, other shafts have given me “more optimal” numbers in a Trackman environment, but there’s nothing optimal about feeling like you’re going to duck hook the ball off the planet with OB stakes left.

When Graphite Design announced a new shaft with a similar profile that’s made to create a slightly more penetrating trajectory, however, I’ll admit I was excited to try it. Let’s see how the numbers played out.

The Numbers

AD_TP_DI_7X

I tested my Tour AD-DI gamer shaft (45.5 inches, tipped 1 inch) against a Tour AD-TP shaft (45.5 inches, untipped) and a Tour AD-TP shaft (45.5 inches, tipped 1 inch) in a TaylorMade M1 460 head (10.5 degrees) set to neutral. Yes, I have a bit more swing speed in the tank than displayed below, but it’s also late October and I don’t want to have a blown out back all winter. I conducted my testing at the Launch Pad at Carl’s Golfland on TrackMan 4 using premium golf balls.

GDDriverShafts20162_arrows

Magenta = Tour AD-TP (tipped 1 inch)

Observations

— Shots with the un-tipped shaft trended to the right. It felt like the face was opening on the downswing and I couldn’t turn my shots over. The data solidifies for me that performance matches my feel, and that I do indeed need a tipped shaft.

— The AD-DI shaft had the highest spin (2953 rpm), highest landing angle, most height (122.1 feet) and launched the highest (13.7 degrees).

— The AD-TP (tipped 1 inch) carried 4.9 yards shorter than the Tour AD-DI, but went 3.7 yards longer in total. This shows how much more penetrating the ball flight with a AD-TP shaft can be.

— Spin rate dropped from 2953 rpm with the Tour AD-DI (tipped 1 inch) to 2460 rpm with the AD-TP (tipped 1 inch).

— With nearly identical clubhead speed, ball speed and smash factors, it’s clear the Tour AD-TP was offering better numbers and tighter dispersion for me.

The Takeaway

Accuracy_and_Distance

The Graphite Design Tour AD-TP shaft is currently selling for $500 at retail. Based on the improvement I saw in my numbers, I would say that the new shaft is worth the value for my swing. The profile and new materials are a match for me in regards to ball flight characteristics and feel. I would describe the feel as “smooth-stiff, with a stable tip.”

Of course, it’s important to undergo a proper fitting, as you saw that the un-tipped version of the Tour AD-GP shaft was giving me fits. But, if you’re like me and struggle with high spin rates and inconsistency, the Tour AD-TP shaft may help you find more accuracy… and a bit more distance, too.

Andrew, the author of this review, comments about hitting duck hooks because that is his miss when he uses a shaft that doesn’t “fit” his swing style. It is the same issue I fight. The fact he has peppered the right side of the grid would be comforting for him. All in all, Andrew fits the new TP shaft pretty well.

tour ad gp 6x black edition

Oct 30, 2016 at 11:57 pm

Some shafts get progressively weaker to the tip (Rogue, AD-DI), many increase stiffness into the tip (most other GD tour AD models, Kuro Kage) To assume all shafts need to be tipped just seems uninformed. Tipping off stiffness in a shaft like a AD-BB is just going to lower the kick point and give you a softer tip; exact opposite of tipping a AD-DI.

tour ad gp 6x black edition

Oct 30, 2016 at 11:05 pm

Wow the author tried really hard to say this is better. The chart looks pretty much the same for all three shafts as far as landing zone. Just one leftward (I’m guess more of a hook) shot skewed the oval left. Unless he’s a left hander, none of his shots were hooks, rather either push or slices. Strange for him to say that he’s fighting a hook when he didn’t hit any.

The real difference does seem to be one offering more roll and one more carry due to launch angle changes I’m guessing due to the stiffer mid and butt sections. Worth it? The argument seems a bit thin.

What are the driver and shaft combinations of the best golfers in the world? For gearheads, it’s an endlessly interesting question — even if we can only ever aspire to play LS heads and 7 TX shafts.

At this week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans, GolfWRX got in-hand looks at the driver setups of a wealth of players.

Check out some of the most interesting combos below, then head to the GolfWRX forums for the rest, as well as the rest of our galleries from New Orleans .

Graphite Designs Tour AD DI Shaft Review

More in reviews:.

PUR Truth Prepare

50 Words or Less

The Graphite Designs Tour AD DI shaft feels great and put up some spectacular numbers.  Easy to see why it’s such a hit on the PGA Tour.

Check out the low launch, low spin Tour AD VF HERE

Introduction

The goal of any manufacturer is to build hype around their product organically.  Smothering the consumer with ads is fine, but it’s nothing compared to the consumer seeing all of their friends talking about and using a product.  That latter scenario is what seemed to happen overnight with the Graphite Designs Tour AD DI shaft.

From Charles Howell III to Tiger Woods to Adam Scott, it felt like every PGA Tour pro was playing the orange “Deep Impact,” and every forum was chattering about it.  The momentum continues to the 2016-2017 season as Hideki Matsuyama uses one in his driver to stack up wins.  We put this tour-proven shaft through the paces to see how it performs for those of us without PGA Tour swings.

Love the AD DI but want something new?  Check out the Graphite Design Tour AD UB HERE

Graphite Designs has a formula for the graphics of their Tour AD shafts, and the DI doesn’t vary from it.  It’s primarily one solid color with some rings in the mid-butt area and very simple graphics .  While some of the colors are bold, the graphics are no nonsense.

Unlike most of their line up, the AD DI does come in two flavors: black and the signature orange .  Go stealth or stand out, the choice is yours.

Somehow I missed out on the AD DI craze a couple years ago, but after one swing I immediately understood what all the fuss was about.  This shaft has a tremendous kick to it, but it never feels out of control.  The company’s description is “Medium” in the butt and mid and “Stiff” in the tip, which matches my assessment exactly.  You get a smooth, powerful kick through impact, but the tip doesn’t feel loose or torque-y, even on mishits.

As an aside, kudos to Graphite Designs for taking all the voodoo out of shaft descriptions.  For each of their shafts, they describe the butt, mid, and tip sections on a scale that ranges from “Very Stiff” to “Soft.”  This makes it easy to figure out what you might like and what you want to try next.

Performance

When I love the feel of a shaft, chances are its going to perform well for me.  That was certainly the case with the Graphite Designs AD DI.

I started my testing with the stiff flex version of the AD DI.  The smooth kick made me feel like I was delivering effortless power to the ball, and the results were very solid.  When I bumped up to the X flex, things got even better.  The kick was slightly less pronounced, as you’d expect, but the consistency of the results was through the roof.  Every shot was near the center of the face, and the monitor was showing the same push-draw time after time .

For players who haven’t hit Graphite Designs shafts and can’t make use of their feel chart, I would say that the AD DI is a mix of the Diamana Blue and White shafts.  It has the smooth feel and pronounced kick of the blue with the strong tip of the white.  For me, that adds up to great consistency with tremendous feel .

graphite-designs-ad-di_0033

Prior to this review, my experience with  Graphite Designs  shafts had been minimal, but now the AD DI is making a serious push to go in the bag.  It blends some of the best attributes of my favorite shafts, and the performance simply can’t be argued with.  Waiting to get this into play is just one more reason that this winter is going to feel really long.

First of all, I thank you for your website. Passionate about golf and about gear of golf , you are for me , the website number one on the subject .

I particularly appreciated your review of the ADDI shaft. GRAPHITE DESIGN being one of my favorite trademarks. I hope that others tests of the range are going to follow. Thank you again ! Excuse-me for my broken English. Patrick

Hey Matt, always enjoy reading your reviews. This GD Tour AD DI is a shaft I keep hearing about and seeing in clubs over the years. It was no surprise to hear you were impressed by it, but it was really interesting to see that you were concentrating on the proper flex for yourself(S vs. XS). With that said, I was wondering what your thoughts are on the Stiff shaft. I know you will ultimately fall back on getting fit….understood. But given what you experienced for yourself, which appeared to be that you need the XS shaft for your swing speed to maximize accuracy, what would you venture the S flex would be good for in terms of swing speed? Assuming a smooth swing and 102-103 mph….S flex? Once again, I know a fitting is absolutely a must, but what swing speed range do you think might benefit best from the S flex AD DI shaft?

' src=

The thing that impressed me about the AD DI is that I could have been very happy playing the S, I just preferred the shot shape with the X. The S is also so smooth, I think it could work all the way down to, perhaps 95 MPH. Around 100 MPH is probably the sweet spot.

' src=

Matt, surprised it has taken so long to try out this iconic shaft. I am 100 SS and the GD DI 60 Stiff is the shaft I keep coming back to. Best feel yet never seems overpowered. Also agreed with the comment that it sits between the Diamana Blue and White. More stable than the Blue and more feel than the White.

And if you want that next level of stiffness / low ball flight try the BB. I noticed Kaymer just moved from DI to BB in driver, but kept DI in other woods. It also comes in Black which I think was a special order/ request from Adam Scott a few years back.

First of all I thank you for your site !

For me you are the number one ! I particularly appreciated your review of the ADDI ; GD being one of my favorites trademarks I hope that others tests of the range are going to follow

thank you again Patrick ( paris)

We will have a review of the AD TP coming soon and hopefully more to follow after that. Any models in particular that you’re interested in?

Thank you Matt !

a review of the AD TP would be perfect ! AD MT too !

' src=

Thanks, Matt. As it is often said the shaft is the “engine” of the club and the key to proper fitting. For us mere mortals, may I presume that this shaft also comes in a “Regular” form for slower swing speeds? Thanks again. Steve

Yes, it’s available in R2 (senior) through X.

' src=

I have the AD DI-7s shaft in my TaylorMade 2017 M2 3 wood. It’s the best club I’ve ever owned. My swing speed is around 105mph, yet I feel as if however hard I swing with this shaft, it just copes and continues to deliver. The feel is exquisite. Now all I have to do is see if I can find a driver to put this shaft into!

' src=

Hi Matt, I have just purchased a Ping G400 Max Driver…Reg stock stand.shaft. I am 70 yo on 18 h/c. Would I benefit from fitting an Ad Di Shaft ? In a regular form. My swing speed is around 90 to100. Can I buy in Australia?

I’m not sure who distributes Graphite Design in Australia.

There’s no inherent reason why the AD DI would be better than the stock PING shaft. The only way it would be better is if it’s a better fit for your swing, which you could find out by working with a high quality club fitter.

' src=

Love the podcast!

Are these averages from the S or X flex?

This was a while back but I believe the X was the better fit.

' src=

What was your ball flight with the S?

I’m not going to be able to reliably tell you any more than is in the review, this was written quite a while back.

' src=

Great review. How would you compare this shaft to the Tensei series? Also, in the past have you ever put together a shaft comparison chart?

There are a lot of different profiles in the Tensei series, but overall both the Tensei and Graphite Designs shafts are consistent and high quality. I have not put together a shaft comparison chart because we encourage everyone to be fit.

' src=

Hi Matt, I have the choice of the Di 60g stiff or VENTUS Black 6 60g in New St200 G, VENTUS is newer to market, what do you think.?

I would suggest getting fit and finding the best option for your swing. If you want to know what fits my swing, you can see my WITB here: https://pluggedingolf.com/about/matt-saternus/matts-whats-in-the-bag/

' src=

Hey Matt, Hopefully you still remember the feel of this shaft since it was reviewed a number of years ago…. In the review you stated that the feel was somewhere between Diamana BF and DF. Now I am curious to know whether the feel of the AD DI is similar to the Diamana ZF in your experience since the ZF is considered to be in between DF and BF regarding feel. I know you did the review on the ZF already but maybe I am just looking for a confirmation. Hope you can answer my question, thanks!

Overall, yes, they’re somewhat similar.

' src=

would you recommend AD_D1 7x for a senior who’s swing speed is down?

A 70 gram X flex is not something I would recommend for someone whose speed is going down, unless it’s going down from a truly elite level.

' src=

Are you able to share what head(s) you had conducted this shaft review with? As always appreciate you and plugged in.

Thanks, Mike

I always test with my gamer, the PING G425 Max.

' src=

I demoed the DI-6s with a fitter a while back and he thought it was my best fit from what we had available. However my club head SS is only mid, maybe high 90s, which according to GD suggests a stiff- regular. The fitter doesn’t have a SR with a Ping tip to demo. I’m playing a Ping tour 65 stiff ok right now but the DI was better.

If anything, the DI-6 stiff plays smoother/less demanding than the Ping tour stiff, true? Apparently the DI-6s might play ok down to mid 90s as you mentioned? Otoh worst case, a stiff-regular wouldn’t be flimsy, true?

Thanks for any thoughts…$370 shaft, good grief:-)

Yes, I think the AD-DI will feel softer/smoother than the PING Tour in the same flex. Personally, I would be hesitant to buy anything I hadn’t tested, especially for $370. If you thought the stiff felt good and it worked well, I would stick with that rather than taking a chance on the SR.

' src=

Does anyone have experience with the 105x hybrid/driving iron shaft? Thoughts? Is it “too stiff”?

' src=

Good morning! I wanted to see if you could share a thought or two comparing the Tour AD DI vs the Ventus TR Red. Thanks

I have a full review of the Ventus TR Red here: https://pluggedingolf.com/fujikura-ventus-tr-red-shaft-review/

The Tour AD DI “ D EEP I MPACT” is designed to provide golfers with more power and stability in their golf shaft. Designed and manufactured exclusively at the Graphite Design factory headquarters in Japan, the Tour AD DI orange and black colored options are available in 50g R2 (Lite), R1 (Regular) S and X flex, 60g SR (Stiff Regular), S, X and TX (Tour X-Stiff) flex, 70g S, X and TX (Tour X-Stiff) flex and 80g S, X and TX (Tour X-Stiff) flex.

The Tour AD DI 5-R2, R1 and S flex, 6-SR, S and X flex, 7-S and X flex and 8-S and X are available in two color schemes orange with white bands and green rings and a 2nd color option of black with white bands and silver rings.  The Tour AD DI 5-X, 6-TX, 7-TX, 8-TX and 9-X flex shafts are available only in the orange color scheme.

The Tour AD DI is our first shaft design that was integrated with Toray Company’s original NANOALLOY material technology in the tip section of the shaft.  This material technology has now come to be known as “ DI Technology ”.

The result, the Tour AD DI delivers players to the next level in shaft performance and will create a “ D EEP I MPACT” on your game! Revolutionary technology, design and the most advanced materials are trademarks in all Graphite Design shafts, resulting in the highest quality premium golf shafts on the market today. Validating the company’s “Tour AD” logo, all of Graphite Design’s Tour proven shafts are specifically designed to promote a gain in A ccuracy and D istance.

  1. Review: Graphite Design Tour AD GP Shafts

To find out, I took the GP shaft to the Launch Pad at Carl's Golfland in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., where I tested it against the Tour AD-DI in the most apples-to-apples comparison possible. Both shafts were built to my specifications, 7X (tipped 1 inch) at a finished length of 45.5 inches in a TaylorMade M1 430 (10.5 degrees set to 8.5 degrees).
