Best Boston city tours

Fenway Park Tour

1.  Fenway Park Tour

  • Things to do
  • Sport events
  • Fenway/Kenmore

This is the one you haul all the out-of-towners to—mostly because you can’t wait to go yourself. The hour-long tour includes player and ballpark history and visits to the press box and Pesky’s Pole; depending on the guide, you also might visit the bullpens and peek behind the anachronistic scoreboard. Game-day tours are available as well—hours, options and prices vary, check the website for special event info and restrictions.

Historic Sightseeing Cruise

2.  Historic Sightseeing Cruise

This narrated, 90-minute sightseeing tour takes you around some of the Harbor Islands while recounting the city’s history as a shipping port, as well as the role that the harbor played in the Revolutionary War. Just prepare yourself for the conditions (tours are offered daily, year-round), as well as the inevitable real estate envy when you sail past all the stunning waterfront condos.

Samuel Adams Brewery Tour

3.  Samuel Adams Brewery Tour

  • price 1 of 4

For a city that’s often hamstrung by booze-related blue laws, Boston sure has a fine collection of breweries. The city’s most famous brewer is Samuel Adams, the Revolutionary and “maltster” after whom the brewery is named. Tours of the Jamaica Plain facility run daily (except for Sundays) and are free, although there is a suggested charitable donation of $2. You’ll taste the malts, smell the hops and enjoy multiple samples.

Boston Public Library Art and Architecture Tour

4.  Boston Public Library Art and Architecture Tour

  • Attractions
  • Libraries, archives and foundations

You can spend years visiting the BPL and never have proper knowledge of the beauty contained within. These free, volunteer-led tours—no appointment needed—offer architectural insight into both the original Renaissance Revival McKim building and the modernist Philip Johnson wing (added in 1972). Even longtime patrons are impressed by the sheer volume of oils, tapestries and sculptures populating the halls, including the John Singer Sargent murals that took some 30 years to create.

Freedom Trail Tour

5.  Freedom Trail Tour

The Freedom Trail  often gets a bad rap among locals, some of whom are tired of the gussied-up guides posing as historical figures as they shuffle tourists through the historical sites. If you don ’ t want to take a guided tour, it ’ s easy to enjoy the lovely self-guided stroll, two and a half miles that remind you of the city’s unparalleled Colonial and Revolutionary history. And if the trail has only whetted your appetite for historical discovery, consider taking a self-guided tour along the Black Heritage Trail or the Women’s Heritage Trail .

Arnold Arboretum Tour

6.  Arnold Arboretum Tour

  • Parks and gardens
  • Jamaica Plain

This Jamaica Plain respite is worth a visit, in part due to the oldest and largest collection of lilac bushes in the world, predating even the founding of the arboretum in 1872. Free weekend tours will help better acquaint you with the vast expanse of flora. Check ahead to confirm hours and weather cancellations, and look into special seasonal themed tours that focus on one species, like the greenhouse collection of potted bonsai plants.

Old State House Tour

7.  Old State House Tour

  • Historic buildings and sites

Designed by Bulfinch and completed in 1798, this magnificent structure replaced the old legislative building across Boston Common, which had been the headquarters of the British government. Included with admission, tours help visitors understand how the Old State House was the political center of Revolutionary Boston. Enthusiastic guides explain how the voices of John Hancock, Samuel Adams, and others rang out from the halls and changed American history forever.

North End Market Tour

8.  North End Market Tour

Even if you’ve eaten in the North End before,  Boston Food Tours ’  exploration of the neighborhood will take your knowledge to another level by teaching (and feeding) you along the way. On the tour you ’ ll learn how Italians ’ food traditions were adapted to America, while acquiring insider cooking tips and discovering where to buy the very best ingredients. At multiple stops, you ’ ll learn about the very best of the neighborhood, ensuring you ’ ll get more out of your future visits.

Ghosts & Gravestones Tour

9.  Ghosts & Gravestones Tour

Our city’s history is not all puppy dogs and rainbows—death, disease and crime make sizeable appearances as well. By taking a Ghosts & Gravestones tour (days/times vary by season), you will learn about murders and executions like the ones that took place on the Boston Common. Try not to be spooked by stories of paranormal activity at the Omni Parker House or the legend of the Boston Strangler.

Walks with the Local AMC Chapter

10.  Walks with the Local AMC Chapter

The Appalachian Mountain Club wants to show you parts of Greater Boston you’ve never explored before. Year-round hikes and nature walks, both accessible and challenging, take you all around the state (and sometimes New Hampshire, too), lasting anywhere from 3 to 20 miles. Dates and times vary, and walks cost just $1 if you’re not an AMC member.

Castle Island Park and Fort Independence

11.  Castle Island Park and Fort Independence

  • South Boston

Locals sometimes forget about the 1850 granite bastion known as Fort Independence, poised at the ocean end of South Boston on Castle Island. It’s a good spot for an all-day picnic, or to pretend you’re going on a medieval raid. Free tours of the fort are offered on summer weekends; check in advance for details.

Boston Lobster Tours

12.  Boston Lobster Tours

Trap-to-table is the only way to eat your favorite crustacean. Take a tour aboard a legit Downeast-style lobster boat with up to three other friends (bench seating is offered), and cruise around the Boston Harbor for 75 minutes, learning about the local industry and hauling up two traps of your own; whatever is of legal size is yours to keep and (presumably) eat.

City Wine Tours

13.  City Wine Tours

Two hours of wine drinking under the auspices of learning? Yes, we imagine a few Bostonians would partake. Choose between four neighborhoods—South End, Back Bay, North End or Assembly Row in Somerville—then join an intimate group led by a wine connoisseur. The guide leads you to top-notch hot spots where you’ll learn how to taste, pair and buy fine wines.

Boston Cape Cod & The Islands (Classic, 8 Days)

Cons: 1. Daniel Webster Inn was over-rated. Would not stay there again. 2. Visit to the Plimouth Plantation was a waste of time. Spent way too much time there. 3. Transportation from Logan Airport to the Boston Hyatt was a mess!!!! No signs, no directions, and the taxi driver had no idea what to do with the voucher. Ended up paying for the taxi! Ridiculous!! 4. Service at the included dinner at the Daniel Webster Inn was horrible!! Kathy (our waitress) should be fired! However, the food was delicious! 5. Not enough time spent in Nantucket. 6. Way too much time spent at the Breakers in Newport. 7. This should not be considered an 8-day tour. All we did on day 8 was ride on the bus to the airport! Pros: 1. Tour director Robin was outstanding!! Wellness director, Brittany, was also fabulous! 2. Canolis, Cape Code Chips and Cape Codders on the bus was a nice touch! Thoroughly enjoyed the snacks on the bus! 3. Ferry to Martha's Vineyard was fun! Thoroughly enjoyed the talk session/information about the Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association. Very interesting. 4. Local guide tour of Nantucket Island was great! Lots of interesting information. Not enough time spent in Nantucket. 5. Loved the Harbor View hotel! 6. Sailing on the Adirondack II was THE BEST!! Need to offer more than one Mimosa! 7. Luggage service was great.

Spotlight on Boston Tour

Spotlight on Boston

I was a little nervous before the start of the trip because there were some complications trying to confirm the trip. It was partially my fault because I did book the trip relatively last minute, but I do believe there was some miscommunication on both ends that could have been avoided from the very beginning. The biggest problem was the method of communication. I did not understand that in order for the information to be relayed correctly, you had to message through the communication portal on touradar's website. That was not explicitly made clear, and it took several days and conversations with multiple people to finally realize that. Once that was made clear, everything ran much more smoothly, but I definitely think for the customer's sake especially new customer, someone needs to be very clear in explaining that and confirm with the customer by having them relay it back to them. Thankfully, once everything was booked and confirmed, the trip ran wonderfully! I had such a blast. My tour guide was amazing and the group I was with were incredible. I am definitely looking forward to booking another trip in the future.

The guides in every region we visited were excellent. A particular shout out to Ryan, who added in extra stops and experiences based on the group's interests. Other highlights included the Grand Canyon, Washington's museums, whale watching in Boston, cycling across the Golden Gate Bridge and sunset in Griffeths Park. I met a great group of people on the trip, and I wouldn't hesitate to book with the Cyote Trip again.

What people love about Boston Tours

What our guests are saying

We enjoyed greatly our tour today.

Our tour guide, Phoenix, was very knowledgeable, had a good wit, and shared many, many nuggets of information that made the trip interesting and full of energy. Even when we asked about other points of interest we thought he might know about he was able provide name and an interesting nugget about it. He met children’s interests as well as adults. Will definitely tell others about your service and have them look for Phoenix. Thank you all.

How can I explore Boston without a car? + -

If you’ve ever visited or plan to visit Boston, you’ll know that getting around can be a bit tricky. However, there’s an easy solution to that — the Old Town Trolley. Hop on, and you’ll be able to explore some of the city’s best attractions without the bother of driving or navigating traffic. What is the best way to see Beacon Hill? + -

Boston’s most picturesque neighborhood is Beacon Hill, an area that boasts stunning architecture, cobblestone streets, and charming boutiques. For those who want to make the most of their time and see Beacon Hill from a unique perspective, hopping on the Old Town Trolley is the way to go.

The first stop of the Old Town Trolley in Beacon Hill is at the Massachusetts State House. From this towering location, visitors can take in the stunning panoramic views of the city and the Charles River. The tour guide will provide visitors with fascinating facts about the State House’s history, including the famous codfish atop its dome, the symbol of Boston’s fishing industry.

The trolley then takes visitors through the heart of Beacon Hill’s residential area, a place filled with old brick houses, antique gas lamps, and postcard-perfect scenery. The highlight of this tour is undoubtedly the stop at the Old North Church, known as the church that started the U.S. Revolution.

Continuing down Beacon Hill, the trolley stops at the legendary Cheers bar, also known as the set of the hit TV show, “Cheers.” Visitors can sit at the same bar where Norman and Cliff once did, take photos, and enjoy the historic décor.

Boston’s Beacon Hill is a hidden treasure of American history, and the Old Town Trolley is the perfect way to experience it. From the State House’s panoramic views to the blue skies to stopping at a bar where everyone knows your name, this tour offers visitors a unique way to see the city’s hidden treasures while learning about Boston’s vibrant past.

Which are the must-visit attractions in Boston? + -

Here are some of the must-see attractions that you can explore on the Old Town Trolley Tour:

1. The Freedom Trail: This iconic 2.5-mile-long trail takes you through 16 significant historical sites that were crucial to the American Revolution. You’ll see the Massachusetts State House, Paul Revere’s House, Old North Church, the USS Constitution Museum, and more. The Freedom Trail is a fascinating way to learn about the city’s rich history.

2. Acorn Street: Located in Beacon Hill, this street is a throwback to Colonial times with its cobblestone streets, gas lamps, and impeccably preserved 19th-century homes. Its houses are some of the oldest in Boston, and their exteriors have remained mostly unchanged for over a century. Acorn Street’s timeless look and feel, mixed with its New England charm, has made it a favorite among filmmakers.

3. Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum: The Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum is an interactive, high-tech, floating museum. Unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before, this unique museum sits on a barge in the water and includes tours on restored tea ships and a stunning, interactive documentary that immerses you into the events that led up to the American Revolution.

4. Quincy Market: This colorful marketplace is a shopper’s paradise, with more than 100 vendors selling everything from souvenirs to food. You can indulge in some classic Boston dishes such as clam chowder or a lobster roll.

5. Bunker Hill Monument: This 221-foot granite obelisk commemorates the Battle of Bunker Hill, which was a pivotal moment in the American Revolution. You can climb to the top for a stunning view of the city.

Can you tour Boston at night? + -

Boston transforms into a picturesque and vibrant city at night, and it offers plenty of things to do for those who are up for some nighttime fun. Don’t just take our word for it, check out our awesome online reviews. Once you’re ready for a Boston bike tour you won’t forget, simply reserve an Urban AdvenTours experience with us and see for yourself how we’ve earned our outstanding reputation.

What's New?

Give a ring (of your bell).

As we’re sure you know, it’s polite to ring your bell when you’re about to pass a person, car, or other cyclist. Although we do love a good, “on your left!” (despite it’s alleged disappearance), we like bells for a few reasons: They’re a loud, distinct sound, which can cut through the city noise (and…

Boston's Premier Bike Tours & Rentals

"We had a most excellent time with Mike and Brad leading us in the Tour de Boston tour, the family friendly tour. The company was both highlighted in Fodor's Boston and AAA's guides as being top notched. The tour was gentle and easy. Our friends who haven't rode bikes for decades also loved the tour. If we ever come to Boston again, we will definitely use this company again. Guides were great. We always felt safe. This is such a great way to experience the city. I am glad I brought my own snack."

"We took the bike tour today (don't remember which one but it was just under 2.5 hours) and it was so wonderful! It was nice to be out in the town, on the streets, in the parks and landmarks. You could take it all in. The sights, the smells, the people, the culture and history of Boston. The team were top notch! Professional, safe, knowledgeable and fun. I highly recommend this to everyone! Our friends who had been to Boston many many times said they saw and learned things that they never did before. Well done!"

"The tour was great! Charles is a fantastic guide that loves sharing his city. We upgraded the bike rental that came with the Go Boston card to a bike tour. A great way to see Boston. Don't worry about bringing water. A full cold water bottle was provided along with a bike bag to carry a few things and bag check to hold things you don't need on the bike. Bikes were all Kona Dew Plus in good condition."

"We loved renting bikes from urban adventures. I had four kids with me ages 6 through 12. The guys at Urban Adventures got us hooked up with bikes, helmets and locks really quickly. They were patient as we tried different bike sizes. We are all experienced bikers, which was good because we had to ride with a little Boston traffic (in a bike lane) before getting to the bike path next to the Charles. If you are not comfortable on a bike you might want to do a tour so you don't have to worry about navigating this part. We rode about 5 miles along the Charles to Harvard, really beautiful trail (the Esplinade). The urban adventure guys were very friendly and gave us directions as we headed off to our next stop. Would definitely rent from them again."

"Urban AdvenTours is fantastic. We booked a City View Tour last minute as we wanted to explore the city a bit, but also get some exercise. The guides were great--very knowledgeable and kind throughout the tour. When you arrive, they fit you to a helmet and bike to make sure you're comfortable for the ride. I never felt uncomfortable on the city streets, there were dedicated bike lanes and traffic let you by. We did about 11 miles all told over 3 hours--the pace was very manageable. We felt like we saw a lot of Boston and learned some great facts about the city. Would 100% recommend!"

We're Hiring!

Love bikes and Boston? We're looking for tour guides, bike mechanics, tour and rental associates, and bike shop associates to join our team! Full-time, part-time, and seasonal positions available.

Pop & Rock

HELADO NEGRO “Phasor,” the latest full-length from this North Carolina-based singer, songwriter, and producer, is dreamy yet humming synthpop, with subtle touches like the bursts of glitter that adorn the shuffling “I Just Want to Wake Up with You” inviting the listener to lean in more closely. April 26, 8:30 p.m. The Sinclair, Cambridge. 617-547-5200, sinclaircambridge.com

THE BLACK CROWES Last month Chris and Rich Robinson’s rock and soul collective released its first album in 14 years, “Happiness Bastards”; recorded in 2½ weeks, it finds the brothers feisty and energized, particularly on uptempo cuts like the boogieing opener, “Bedside Manners,” and the rave-up “Flesh World.” April 28, 8 p.m. MGM Music Hall at Fenway. 617-488-7540, crossroadspresents.com

ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER Massachusetts-born experimental-electro innovator Daniel Lopatin — whose credit list includes scores for “Uncut Gems” and “The Curse,” as well as the musical direction for The Weeknd’s 2021 Super Bowl halftime show — returns home for a live presentation of Oneohtrix Point Never’s most recent album, 2023′s suspended-in-time “Again.” April 28, 8 p.m. Royale. 617-338-7699, royaleboston.com

MAURA JOHNSTON

Folk, World & Country

GARNET ROGERS This veteran Canadian folkie with the imposing frame and well-deep voice has eased away from touring these days, so it’s worth taking advantage of the opportunity to see him when it presents itself, as much for the stories he tells between his songs as for the songs themselves. April 26, 8 p.m. $30. Club Passim, 47 Palmer St., Cambridge. 617-492-7679. www.passim.org

WAXAHATCHEE Katie Crutchfield, a.k.a. Waxahatchee, continues the country lean she manifested on her last record on the just-released “Tigers Blood,” which she comes to Boston in support of Friday. And the album contains something unprecedented, at least for her: the first love song she’s ever written. April 26, 8 p.m. $41.25-$75.50. Orpheum Theatre, 1 Hamilton Place. www.livenation.com

THE TOWN AND THE CITY FESTIVAL As usual, there’s plenty on offer for roots music fans at this year’s The Town and the City, with individual bills conveniently packaged as “singer-songwriter,” “Americana,” and “solo acoustic” (not that you shouldn’t explore). Worth singling out: a rare appearance by Syd Straw. April 26, 6 p.m., April 27, 2 p.m. Downtown Lowell, various venues and prices; see festival website for details. www.thetownandthecityfestival.com

A.Z. MADONNA

THE DROWSY CHAPERONE This bonkers musical demands hammy excess, and director-choreographer Larry Sousa and his 16-member cast are only too happy to oblige. The result is a rollicking delight in which “The Drowsy Chaperone” sends up the corny tropes of the classic Broadway musical comedy while illustrating — song by song, scene by scene — why those tropes remain so emotionally potent. With music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, a book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar, and music direction by Matthew Stern. Through May 12. Lyric Stage Company of Boston. 617-585-5678, lyricstage.com

MURRAY WHYTE

WELL Boston artist Eben Haines makes assemblages that critique capitalism, crafting scraps into art that depicts a dystopian future hinting at terrible ruptures caused by an uncaring, unequal society. The title piece, an immersive installation, sets viewers at the bottom of a well. But “well” has more than one meaning, and in this exhibition, Haines begins to imagine what’s needed for healing: neighborliness, kindness, and a helping hand. Through May 17.
