Excellent Kenya Trip with one exception.

We had an excellent trip organized by Tourcompass. Everything went like clockwork. We did 1 week's safari followed by 4 nights on Diani beach. The safari guide was excellent and he went above and beyond to find us the Big 5, although only saw 4. All the transfers went well. I marked it down because there was no wifi on our jeep. This was advertised heavily in all the pre publicity and guides and our two young daughters were a bit frustrated. The guide did give us intermittent access but his data quickly ran out. The other point that is not made clear is you have to book any side trips before you leave the UK so the discount offered does not work in Kenya..

Safari in Kenya and Tanzania

This was an extremely well put-together trip with excellent opportunities to see wildlife - we saw everything we had hoped for and more. Our guides were all very knowledgeable and friendly. Natural World Safari Tours in Kenya were very helpful in resolving our delayed luggage, collecting it from the airport and delivering it to us. All the accommodation was enjoyable in different ways, varying from hotels with a pool to wild(ish) camps. There are some long days of travel on poor roads which give a view of Africa outside the wildlife parks, but also some more relaxing days. A most interesting and enjoyable trip

Peru highlights tour

Booked my Peru trip with Tour Compass as had the tour I wanted visiting the main sites in Peru. Well organised, they use local guides so each day could be with a different guide but they were all on time and knowledgeable with very good English. The group was only small , 4 of us but we sometimes joined up with other groups. Transport was usually small minibuses which were comfortable. Apart from one driver who thought he was Perus' Lewis Hamilton, the others all drove well. The hotels were generally good, clean with decent size rooms in good locations. I paid a single room supplement and was pleased with getting a double room and not some small cupboard!!. Would definitely recommend Tour Compass and will use again

South Africa Safari & Mauritius Beach Holiday

From the initial booking to the flight home we felt that tour compass passed all the tests. Initially our first hotel cancelled the last 2 days of our stay due to overbooking, tour compass worked with us to find an alternate accommodation which was superb. In total we had 6 flights with 4 transfers, the transfers were all waiting for us when we came into arrivals which was great. All hotels were excellent & the staff were very accommodating & polite. The guides on the game safaris need a special mention Albertina at Kruger Gate and Chloe at Umkumbe Bush Lodge. Thank you all for the memorable holiday.

Great travel company for small group tours

I'm really pleased with my recent trip to Thailand with Tour Compass. The itinerary was very well organised, the local guides were really professional and overall everything run smoothly. I like that they provide a lot of time for independent exploration too. I'd definitely travel with them again

Tour compass (specifically Catriona)…

Tour compass (specifically Catriona) have been so helpful. Did their australia and Singapore tour and she answered all of my questions (of which there were many !) we had an issue with one of our hotels in cairns and she was very quick to rectify the issue which made us feel safe and confident with our choice of travel agent. Also the transfer times were too short for me personally and they were happy to change them and did so very quickly. The information pack you receive is also incredibly helpful. Would recommend them ! Thank you TourCompass !

Fantastic safari and beach resort

Fantastic trip on safari finishing with a beach resort on Zanzibar. Excellent from start to finish. The office staff were so helpful as were our receptions at each country. This was finished off with our superb guide in Tanzania, Peter Minja. His knowledge, patience and sense of humour was brilliant. For what you pay this trip was absolute value for money. Well done Africa Safari.

Brilliant tour of Costa Rica

This was a really fantastic tour of Costa Rica. The itinerary was excellent and everything ran smoothly. I found communication before the trip a bit too laid back (eg. No reminder when the balance was due) but whenever I contacted Tour Compass they were helpful. I would definitely use the company again and recommend them.

Fantastic trip

This was our third holiday with this company and we weren't disappointed. We spent 10 days in Kenya in the search of the Big 5 and 8 days in Zanzibar. We have had the trip of a lifetime. Everything went smoothly and the transfers were well organised. Our guide in Kenya, James, was very knowledgeable. We saw many animals and birds. The hotels were clean, comfortable and welcoming.

A stunning holiday

The whole tour was very well organised. In particular, David, our guide on the safari in Kenya, was excellent, so friendly and knowledgeable. All of the accommodation we stayed in was superb and all travel arrangements worked well. Tour Compass were always available to provide help and advice before we travelled. A stunning holiday!

A thoughtfully planned trip.

We booked a holiday to Thailand (which was a new destination for us) and we were a little apprehensive about what to expect. Everything was planned and organised to the highest degree which meant we could just enjoy our holiday without worrying. The team from Discova communicated well and were reliable, offering excursions in Phuket but not imposing on our time. The whole holiday was exceptional value for money and had been thoughtfully planned in our stays in Phuket, Khao Sok and Khao Lak. All transfers were planned and included. We would highly recommend this trip with Tour Compass. Thank you for an amazing holiday.

South Africa and Mauritius holiday planning superbly managed by Africasafari

From the outset, Neil Smith of Africasafari has been a pleasure to deal with. We had a number of special requests along he way and Neil has always responded promptly and positively. Recently we have had to make changes due to a fire at the safari lodge we had booked and also our selected hotel in Cape Town closing down. Neil has been very helpful in offering us alternatives and in following up on our detail requests. Thank you, Michael Scott

Dear Michael, Thank you very much for your review and you are welcome. Great we could sort out a nice alternative for you. Sure to be a fantastic tour. Best regards, Neil Smith www.africasfari.co.uk

TourCompass Kenya Safari

TourCompass Fantastic safari in Kenya. TourCompass are prompt and very helpful. Holiday was very good value. All services were extremely efficient. Emails answered within hours, even when there was a time difference. I was unwell in Mombasa and TourCompass could not of been more helpful in rearranging our safari for 4 days later at no extra cost despite being ill the morning we were due to go on safari. All done with no hassle. Great communication from start to end of holiday. Would highly recommend them. Will look to book future adventures with them

Our dream holiday exceeded our expectations

We booked our trip for a Safari and Beach holiday with tour compass. We went to Kenya for our safari trip and Zanzibar for the beach holiday. The trip was very well organised by tour compass and everything went very smoothly when we were away. It was by far the best holiday we have ever had and would love to do it again in the future. Tour compass used Natural World Kenya as its partner organisation and they provided an absolutely incredible safari experience for us. Our guide, James, was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and patient with us throughout the safari experience. We managed to see the big 5 during our trip and even managed to see our favourite animal, cheetahs, and they also had cubs which was amazing to see! The trip exceeded our expectations. Thank you so much Tour compass for organising it! Thanks Steven and Sophie

Second time we have used this company…

Second time we have used this company and they came up trumps again. Everything arranged seamlessly, good communication, suitable help when our flight was delayed, great guide for the safari, excellent accommodation in Kenya, balconies, pool, local wildlife and great food. We feel that this was a good value holiday and we are already recommending africasafaris to our friends. We look forward to our next trip with you. 👏👍😃. Meryl and Paul.

Easy booking process but could use better attention to detail + communication

We booked a 4 night Tanzanian safari and 7 night Zanzibar beach holiday trip with Tour Compass. Overall we were impressed with the service - the hotels and flights were all great and our tour guide on safari was fantastic. The reason we gave 3* is because I requested our honeymoon to be booked in my new married surname and checked twice with TourCompass that it was in my new name. However upon arrival at the airport in Tanzania I found out that one flight was in my maiden name and hadn't been changed by TourCompass. As you can imagine this led to a series of problems for us in another country trying to negotiate entry to the flight. I then had the same issue upon checking into our hotel in Zanzibar. This is disappointing as I specifically emailed twice to ensure this change had been made by TourCompass.

Date of experience : May 31, 2023

Hi Arlene, Thank you very much for your review and your feedback. I am so glad to hear, that you had a great trip. Regarding your change of name; We have of course informed our partner about this change as agreed with you, and I can see that this has also been confirmed by the airline, so I am sorry to hear, that this still caused you problems, as we did what we could to avoid any issues. I can see that you have also sent us some feedback on email, so you will also receive an email from us shortly explaining this further. Best regards Stine Hjorth TourCompass

Very helpful but a bit naughty

Honest, prompt help, advice & service in these unpresidented times. Safari transferred from November 2020 to November 2021 no problem, done easily EXCEPT its £350 per couple MORE which is a bit naughty we think considering they have had £1200 of ours since booking in June 2019 !!!!! We have been told why but still think this is unfair - we fully understand that the holiday would have been more expensive in 2021 but we DIDN'T book it then therefore we feel that it's unfair to have to pay more !!!!

Date of experience : July 30, 2020

Dear JTD, Thank you for your review and we are pleased you appreciated the help, advice & service. Changing your departure date so far in advance unfortunately with some airlines, does increase the costs/charges, even in the current circumstances. We always do our very best to ensure these costs are as low as possible, but hopefully it's easy to understand where the extra cost comes from, airline costs as well as 2021 tour prices. We look forward to delivering a holiday of a lifetime to you as our valued customer. Just let us know if you need anything else. Best regards, Neil Smith www.africasafari.co.uk

Tour Compass gave us the best holiday ever

Tour Compass were so helpful when I was making my booking and answered every little query I had quickly and efficiently. Brilliant trip to Vietnam

I have just come back from a 2 week trip ‘Highlights of Vietnam North to South’ as a solo traveller. Simply put, it was amazing. Everything was organised including travel and connections, there was a chance to purchase extra excursions which I did. The tours and excursions were all so well organised, really interesting and were such good experiences. All three guides we had at the different locations, Thainh, Khánh and Lam were amazing, knowledgable, helpful and just brilliant! We did have an issue with a cancelled overnight train due to landslides, which initially we were told we’d have to pay for flights and extra overnight accommodation, after a quick phone call to the out of hours Tour Compass team, it was all sorted- Catriona was brilliant! Couldn’t recommend Tour Compass enough- I will definitely tour with them again in the future!

Hi Andrea, Thank you so much for taking the time to share your positive feedback. It's great to hear that you had an amazing trip to Vietnam and some memorable experiences along the way! I do hope we can assist you with more memorable experiences again some time in the future. Best regards Stine Hjorth TourCompass

Perfect service

From day one, the Africa Safari team have been top class, especially Neil! We booked our tour but due to covid wanted to move it to next year, nothing was too much trouble! It solidified in my mind we had done the right thing in keeping our booking, other travel companies should take note of how it is done.

Rearranged Holiday

Hi During this really tough time for everyone in regards to holidays I would just like to thank Neil fo our phone call this morning. I had doubts about my forthcoming holiday to South Africa but needn't,' have worried. Neil said there was no problem in my rearranging the dates for my holiday until 2021 when hopefully things will be easier for travellers. Once again thanks Neil for your fab customer service as always and look forward to next year when I can take my newly rearranged holiday. MANY THANKS...

We were kept informed throughout the…

We were kept informed throughout the Covid pandemic and our questions were always answered promptly. Initially, we moved our original holiday dates forward by 12 months, but when cancelled for a second time we opted for a full refund. This was credited to our bank account within 4 days of our request without any fuss. After seeing some of the horror stories that other travellers have suffered at the hands of some tour operators we were extremely grateful that we had chosen Llama Travel. Would certainly recommend this travel company.

Dear Mrs Parkinson, Thank you for your kind words. It has been important to us over this difficult period, to still provide the highest level of service we possibly can and in a timley manner. Good to hear that you received your refund quickly and we look forward to helping you with your Latin American travels in the future. Best regards, Neil Smith www.llamatours.co.uk

Had an amazing on Karibou Kenya Tour

Had an amazing experience doing a safari in Kenya followed by a few days in Zanzibar at the end of Sept 2022! Our guide Kennedy was awesome and managed to help us find so many different animals. The giraffe centre and elephant orphanage were a massive plus and I felt as though none of the animals at either centre were exploited and it was all carried out to benefit them. Zanzibar was amazing, getting to relax and jump on a couple of tours to see the island. We’d 100% go again and book with TourCompass as the whole process from booking, to travelling and making it home has been perfect 😃

Cannot fault this company

We have never used this company before so we were a little apprehensive, but we needn’t have worried. Due to a flight cancellation by BA as we were waiting at the airport we needed to contact Tour Compass and it was out of office hours at the weekend. But someone always responded and they were very helpful. Unfortunately we were at the mercy of BA to authorise alternative flights and we lost two days of our holiday! This meant we arrived at a different time but our Safari driver was there waiting. From then on everything was great and we had a wonderful holiday. Would definitely use Tour Compass again and their pricing was very competitive.

We would definitely recommend Africasafari if you have any plans to visit this area or indeed any of the many others they offer. We have had a few bumps, with our plans, along the way but Neil and his team have been extremely warm, helpful and polite in their handling of our forthcoming trip. It's a shame there is only 5 star as they deserve more. Many thanks and we're hoping to have lots of photos to share with family.

We left our hearts in Africa

We have just returned from the most fantastic time in Tanzania and Zanzibar. Tour Compass have been a pleasure to book through. All has been so easy with customer service, answering questions and information provided. The trip itself, what can I say. We were expecting good, we weren’t expecting a mind blowing, exceptional experience. We were lucky enough to have Abu as our tour guide who became as special to us as the trip itself. His knowledge, patience, politeness, kindness and charisma was just amazing. We were so upset to say goodbye. He went above and beyond to ensure we saw all the wonderful animals we did, including the big 5! All the travelling, hotels and arrangements are so well planned. We still cant believe how much we covered. The accommodation and staff were also amazing. We totally fell in love with every bit of Tanzania and Zanzibar. Thank you Tour Compass.

Well Done Tour Compass! We were so happy!

The printed guidance materials were very clear and extremely useful. I enquired about an upgrade after reading a couple of poor reviews on the particular hotel. Great support from Neil Smith

Great support from Neil Smith and the team in rescheduling our Tanzania safari holiday by 12 months due to the pandemic. Quick and supportive service and made the process really easy. Just returned from a great holiday to Tanzania. Booked holiday just before omicron covid variet hit. Had to do a lot of paperwork due to covid which was very stressful Louisa and team at Africasafari helped with any problems and kept us informed about any new covid restrictions. On Safari we went with Zara tours and our driver Mohamed is a credit to the company with great knowledge of wildlife trees etc and very good driver and knowing best places to look for wildlife. Had my 60th on holiday and Mohamed arrange a cake for me and all hotel workers came and sang and dance for my birthday. This was a very memorable trip with fantastic memories. Thanks for everyone involved well appreciated P Stevenson

2020 adventure

We went on a 16 nights adventure to Kenya starting on 2nd November 2020. First week on safari , where I celebrated my 60th. Second week in baobab hotel in Mombasa. Travelling through this difficult time was surprising easy. All the flights were on time, our safari guide was excellent, meals good and weather very hot ! Many thanks to africasafari for their help in arranging and booking everything, from flights, hotel, transfers, and making sure everything went smoothly in this difficult time.

It's only a safari with a beach holiday

Where do you start, the trip to Tanzania and Zanzibar was one of amazement. Our guide Issa Dubat, very knowledgeable and interesting guide, if you are lucky enough to get him, he was outstanding, my wife and myself were truly amazed, we actually said to each other we are hunting these animals down, Issa went above and beyond to make sure we saw the big 5. We did see all the big 5, you could double or treble that number as the types of animals was easily 30 or 40!! many other groups we spoke with after the safari tour did not see the big 5 maybe 4 of the 5. Issa did a few things we were not expecting and this made the safari element even better, not that you would have thought it could get any better. The hotel Acacia Farm Lodge in Karatu was another great one with our own "butler" (assigned staff) Martin, again he was great and helpful with us. The over nights in the Serengeti were amazing and the views from the eating area were stunning. One thing the hotels/camps in the Serengeti are missing is a telescope, the sky at night is jet black with so many more visible stars you can see with the naked eye is amazing. On to Zanzibar time to relax, the safari was a bit of hard work to be honest as I suffer with a damaged back but, in the end I didn't care as I knew we could recover in Zanzibar. There are many trips to do whilst there and the tour operator seemed to have the better deals on the trips. We stayed at Ocean Paradise 6 nights view to die for came to mind and Tembo Hotel in Stone town for 2 nights was another great hotel with lovely staff, we did a few day trips and most are half day. We visit prisoner island with a local tour guide we met at the Freddie Mercury house and he arrange the boat, took us round the island doing a full blown private tour!! Poor parts about the whole experince, TourCompass office staff are very hands off, you book and they send what they class as helpful documents, I found myself having to ask the same questions over and over again and not getting the answer I wanted so in the end put my time to better use and did nothing, sort of the same as the staff. The travel time from and to the UK were very long, it took us just short of 30 ours to get there and 24 to get back that is door to door travelling. So all pluses all round for the trip but negative for the office staff.

Amazing service!

We booked our April 2020 honeymoon in 2019 but have had to rearrange it 4 times due to the ongoing pandemic. Everyone we have spoken to at AfricaSafari have been amazing, responsive and extremely helpful. We cannot recommend them highly enough for ensuring what is potentially a stressful situation to be easy and seamless. Hopefully we’ll have better luck in 2022 and will finally get to go on our Safari of a lifetime! Thank you Africa Safari!!!

Africa Safari's have been great

Africa Safari's have been great. Due to the pandemic we have yet to go on the holiday but have postponed it twice. The first from 2020 to 2021, at no extra charge, and then again to 2023. We had to skip a year as our daughter has already scheduled in Camp America into 2022 but again, it has been done with minimal fuss, showing great flexibility and customer care. It has been a horrible experience for all but it is good to know companies like this still exist.

We travelled to Tanzania with Africa…

We travelled to Tanzania with Africa Safari with a few days at the coast in Zanzibar, in 2018. Everything was spot on and all the family were fully satisfied. For 2020 I booked for my husband, son, and son in law to go to South Africa on safari in April. But of course everything was cancelled. I was issued with a refund voucher with the information that the latest I would be refunded was January 2021. I have today 23 rd September 2020 received a full refund. If everything finally gets sorted out I am sure we will use Africa Safari again.

Every detail was covered including a fantastic guide Zamo who found the big five for us and was so friendly and informative Spent two nights on the Serengeti what a fantastic experience and do not miss the balloon ride over the Serengeti an experience you will never forget. Avoid the Highview hotel though as the food is appalling. However the Ocean Paradise in Zanzibar were we spent our second week was absolutely amazing 10/10 for absolutely everything. Would definitely recommend Africa Safari.

Date of experience : August 18, 2022

Hi Gill, Thankyou so much for taking the time to leave such a fantastic review. We will make sure that Zamo recieves your kind feedback! Regarding your point about the food, we are truly sorry to hear that, and of course will speak to the hotel about this. We always value feedback, and will make sure the experience is even better for future guests. We hope to see you again soon. Best wishes, Catriona Hodge AfricaSafari.co.uk - a part of TourCompass

Cannot Fault Africasafari - Excellent Company

Unfortunately, yet again we have had to postpone our “once in a lifetime” Safari trip another year due to Covid. Disappointing but necessary. Africasafari have been brilliant in rearranging our trip to 2022, without any fuss - very understanding & professional. Thank you Africasafari team for everything you have done to accommodate us. Now the 4 of us can look forward to our trip in 2022.

Date of experience : April 28, 2021

Dear Julie, You are welcome and yes, now you can start to look forward to your 2022 tour and we are pleased we could help you with this. Thanks for taking the time to review us. Best regards, Neil Smith www.africasafari.co.uk

Individual guided tour of Thailand.

I am disappointed that the company has not responded to my feedback, but other than that much of the trip was very good. The organisation in Thailand which picked me up and ferried me about did a great job and I learned lots about Thailand and saw some wonderful places. I usually organise all my own lone travel so it was a very different experience having my own personal guide and driver.

Date of experience : May 29, 2023

Dear WMHA, Thank you for your feedback. I can see my colleauge has replied to your feedback. As explained this email was received over a weekend, out of our office hours. We are happy to hear you had a lovley tour, and got to experience the wounderful country of Thailand. We hope to welcome you back to Tour Compass in the near future. Best Regards, Laura Trelborg - Travel Consultant

Alles was prima geregeld.

Fijn trip Zuid afrika & mauritsius

Vakantie verliep conform afgesproken details.

Alles was perfect geregeld! Superveel gezien!

Vakantie Tanzania en Zanzibar

Fijne vakantie gehad! Geweldige gids, alles was goed geregeld.

Zeer mooie reis

Ondanks de mechanische problemen, waar niemand schuld treft, prachtige reis. Alles was prima geregeld. Zeer goede aansluiting in de verschillende luchthavens. Ter plaatse was alles piek fijn georganiseerd. In één woord, SCHITTEREND.

15 daagse reis Tanzania Zanzibar

Mvg. Richard Thijssen, Afrikareizen.nl

The nine best bets to win this year’s Masters

tour compass reviews

The PGA Tour schedule so far this season has been ruled by long shots. Take away Scottie Scheffler’s two victories in 2024, and the tournament winners have mainly come out of nowhere.

That trend is unlikely to continue this week at the Masters , where surprise winners are rare. Yes, you’ll occasionally see triumphant golfers such as 60-to-1 long shot Danny Willett in 2016 or 40-to-1 Hideki Matsuyama in 2021, but most Masters champions follow the same criteria: They have good history at Augusta National, good form entering the tournament and good standing in certain key metrics.

While it’s hard to judge the form of the 13 LIV golfers in the field because they play less often and in less-challenging fields, we have a pretty good sense of what a Masters winner should look like:

He’s good at Augusta National: According to Datagolf, course history is far more predictive at Augusta National than at any other course in the PGA Tour rotation. Nine of the past 14 winners (and 13 of the past 18) had a previous green jacket or a top-10 Masters finish.

He’s not a Masters rookie or an amateur: Only three players have won the Masters in their first appearance at the tournament, the last being Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979. I won’t be considering the following Augusta National first-timers: Ludvig Aberg, Wyndham Clark, Eric Cole, Nick Dunlap, Austin Eckroat, Ryo Hisatsune, Lee Hodges, Nicolai Hojgaard, Jake Knapp, Peter Malnati, Denny McCarthy, Grayson Murray, Matthieu Pavon, Adam Schenk and Stephan Jaeger. Plus, no amateur has won the Masters, and there are five in this year’s field: Santiago de la Fuente, Stewart Hagestad, Christo Lamprecht, Neal Shipley and Jasper Stubbs. In terms of picks to win, you can ignore them.

He’s highly ranked: Of the past 24 Masters winners, 17 entered the tournament in the top 12 of the Official World Golf Ranking, and 22 were in the top 30. But because the OWGR does not award ranking points to LIV golfers , who have plummeted down the rankings board, this trend has become a bit dicey. LIV’s Brooks Koepka had at least a share of the lead for the first three rounds at last year’s Masters before he fell apart on Sunday.

He’s in good form: Of the past 13 Masters champions, only Matsuyama in 2021 did not have at least two top-12 stroke-play finishes in the calendar year of the tournament, either on the PGA Tour or the European Tour. These golfers haven’t exactly been tearing it up this year (or are well past their primes), and they’re off my list: Fred Couples, Rickie Fowler, Ryan Fox, Lucas Glover, Sungjae Im, Zach Johnson, Tom Kim, Kurt Kitayama, Min Woo Lee, Luke List, Phil Mickelson, Collin Morikawa, José María Olazábal, Patrick Reed, Justin Rose, Charl Schwartzel, Vijay Singh, Sepp Straka, Camilo Villegas, Bubba Watson, Mike Weir, Willett, Gary Woodland and Tiger Woods.

He’s good on par-4s: Of the past 11 Masters champions, nine ranked first, second or third in the field in par-4 scoring during the tournament. Nine of the past 12 winners also entered the tournament ranked 11th or better in the PGA Tour’s par-4 birdie-or-better statistic . Rory McIlroy, for instance, ranks 70th in par-4 scoring and 72nd in par-4 birdie-or-better this season, and I won’t be betting him to end his Masters jinx this week. Other golfers who aren’t attacking par-4s this season include Cam Davis and Will Zalatoris (though the latter is tempting because of his strong Augusta National history).

He’s not the defending champion: Only three players since 1960 have won back-to-back Masters — Jack Nicklaus in 1965-66, Nick Faldo in 1989-90 and Tiger Woods in 2001-02. Since 2002, only Woods (2006) and Jordan Spieth (2016) have finished in the top five as the defending champion. Three of the past seven defending champions have missed the cut, and none of those seven finished better than Scheffler’s 10th last year. That means I won’t be betting Jon Rahm, last year’s winner , to repeat.

He didn’t win the week before: The last player to win the tournament immediately preceding the Masters and then win the green jacket was Phil Mickelson in 2006. Since then, only two golfers (Anthony Kim in 2010 and Spieth in 2021) have won the week before and then finished in the top 10 at Augusta. Akshay Bhatia, who just won the Texas Open , will not be on my card.

Now that we’ve eliminated 49 golfers from the field of 89, let’s take a look at a few who can actually win. Odds are as of Thursday morning at DraftKings Sportsbook :

Scottie Scheffler (+400)

Betting Scheffler at any tournament these days means accepting preposterously low odds, and the Masters is no different. The champion from two years ago and the OWGR No. 1 is again the favorite, for ample reasons. Scheffler has won two of his past three tournaments and was a missed six-footer away from forcing a playoff at the Houston Open two weekends ago. His worst finish this calendar year was a tie for 17th at the American Express; he has been in the top 10 in his seven other tournaments. The knock on Scheffler has always been his putting, but he has gained strokes on the greens in five of his past six tournaments after an equipment change. He’s first on the PGA Tour in par-4 scoring and par-4 birdie-or-better. What’s not to like here, other than the low odds?

Xander Schauffele (+1400)

Schauffele is probably the best player without a major championship (though he does have an Olympic gold medal ), and you have to think he’s about due: The world’s fifth-ranked player has far more top-10s (11) than missed cuts (three) in his 26 major appearances. Three of those top-10s came at Augusta National. Schauffele, who has finished T-5 or better in three of his past four tournaments, trails only Scheffler in par-4 scoring this season and is tied for 17th in par-4 birdie-or-better. And how about this from Kyle Porter of CBS Sports ? Nine of the past 11 Masters winners had gained at least 1.7 strokes tee to green per round in the three months leading into the tournament. Only two PGA Tour golfers fit that bill this year: Scheffler and Schauffele.

Hideki Matsuyama (+1800)

Matsuyama already has a green jacket as the 2021 champion. He also has some blinding form, with a win in February at Riviera (a good course comparison to Augusta National), followed by a tie for 12th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and a tie for sixth at the Players Championship (two tournaments with elite fields), plus a tie for seventh last weekend in Texas. Matsuyama is one of three golfers in the field to finish at least in the top 25 in each of the past four Masters — Scheffler and Shane Lowry are the others — and he can’t be overlooked.

Joaquín Niemann (+3000)

I think Niemann has one of the better shots out of all the LIV golfers because he comes in with white-hot form: three wins and four top-fives since November, with one of those victories in a full-field DP World Tour event. (LIV golfers can play on the European tour.) He’s also one of only two LIV golfers to average at least two strokes gained per round this season. (Rahm is the other; Dustin Johnson — No. 3 on that list — is well behind both at 1.54 strokes gained per round.) Niemann’s best finish at Augusta National is a tie for 16th last year, but he has made the cut each of the past three years.

Tony Finau (+4000)

Every year, it seems, golf fans get talked into considering Finau at the Masters, and every year he seems to do just okay: He has never missed the cut in six Augusta National appearances, with three top-10s. This year, the world’s 26th-ranked player has missed just one cut in PGA Tour play and tied for second at the Houston Open, his most recent event. Finau can be a little wild off the tee, but that shortcoming is negated a bit at Augusta National because the rough isn’t very penal, and Finau shines at courses with short rough .

Shane Lowry (+5500)

The 2019 British Open champion has been picking up steam as the season has worn on, with a tie for fourth at the Cognizant and a solo third the next week at the Arnold Palmer. Lowry has finished no worse than a tie for 25th in his past four Augusta National appearances and tied for third two years ago. He’s top-20 in par-4 scoring and par-4 birdie-or-better this season.

Sahith Theegala (+4000)

The 26-year-old has played in only one Masters, but it was a ninth-place finish at last year’s tournament. This year, the world No. 15 has four top-10 finishes, with three of them coming over his past five events. Theegala is a respectable 24th in par-4 scoring and 31st in par-4 birdie-or-better.

Cameron Young (+5000)

Young is coming off a tie for seventh at last year’s Masters, has four top-10s this year and is respectable enough on par-4s (12th in par-4 birdie or better, 31st in par-4 scoring). And while Young has yet to win on the PGA Tour, he has four top-10s in major tournaments, including a tie for eighth at last year’s British Open. A win is coming, and it could be at Augusta National.

Jason Day (+6000)

The Aussie, ranked 21st, has the 2015 PGA Championship title on his résumé, and he has finished in second place in each of the other three majors, most recently at last year’s British Open. Day’s recent Masters form has been spotty (two missed cuts and a tie for 39th in his past three visits), but he has four Augusta National top-10s in his career. This season, Day has posted three top-10s and ranks in the top 10 in par-4 scoring and par-4 birdie-or-better.

I am very disappointed with TourCompas…

I am very disappointed with TourCompas services. I bought a safari package in Tanzania and 6 days in Zanzibar. If it were possible, I would give them minus stars. Below I leave you a few words about my experience. I’ am very disappointed with the tourist package you sold me. I knew that things would go badly from the moment you changed the hotel I had already paid for (Ocean Paradise). And not only did you come up with a cheap excuse - there are no more rooms available at Ocean Paradise - but the first offer you made me was miserable. I didn't want to comment too much, I was preparing for vacation and I didn't want to induce negative thoughts. So the hotel in Karatu, Tanzania, which you sell as 4*, is 2*. The restaurant of the hotel 2* . I had an understanding for them because the conditions there do not allow them a cleaning service like in Europe. I really appreciated their work and effort to make us feel good. But why are you selling services that you cannot provide? Your package description was in Norwegian for me. Of course, I translated everything into English, but I had a small error in understanding how much the safari guide's tip is. I mistakenly understood that it is 10 dollars for all 6 days of safari. (I was actually thinking to myself that it is a bit little , but anyway it is a tip and since tips are not mandatory, I thought that your suggestion of 10 dollars is really welcome). When the safari week ended and your guide took us to the airport, together with the other 5 safari colleagues we thanked the guide for his services and one by one we started tipping him. When it was my turn, I handed him $10. The guide with an unimaginable toupee pushed my money back telling me to keep it for myself to buy chocolate. The other tourists told me that I misunderstood and that it is $10 per day. At the moment I was PARALYZED by the words of the guide. But because I'm an educated person, I restrained myself, apologized to the guide (I APOLOGIZED TO HIM!!!!😂 AT LEAST FIVE TIMES) and gave him $60 as written in your recommendation . Do you think it was right for the guide to offend me in this way? What kind of people do you collaborate with in Tanzania? Do you ever test them? Why was he so upset that he didn't get the tip you promised? Is tipping mandatory in Tanzania? If so, why don't you write in the package offer? Let me also tell you that the hotel in Zanzibar, Sultan Sands, is hardly, hardly 4* and the restaurant miserable. All restaurant employees don't move a finger if you don't tip them FIRST . I had all inclusive and when I was at breakfast, lunch, dinner and asked for a water at the table, the waiters didn't want to bring me water because I don't have water included. I told them to bring me water because I want to pay for it at the reception (that's the rule there: what you order extra to the all inclusive menu you can find the payment note at the reception). I received the water, but I didn't find any payment note for the water at the reception. Conclusion: the waiters lied to get me to tip them. Dear tourist company, you don't know anything about me, but I am an educated person and I know a little more than the average population about public services and tourism. The tip is a sum of money, most often, that you receive for a service that you provided impeccably, in a particularly pleasant way, above the standards. So please tell the people at the hotel restaurant to stop harassing tourists for tips. That's how I felt, harassed. And at the bar on the beach when at 10 o'clock in the morning I asked them for drinks from the all-inclusive menu and they didn't have anything. NOTHING. Maybe you think I'm a stingy person and I don't like to leave tips. Then ask the people at the hotel reception how much I tipped them, ask the SPA and manicure girls. My dears, your services are far below the level of your advertisement and the price I paid. I am very disappointed with you (I know you don't care) and I was really wondering who will rate you in Trustpilot with 5 stars? Me in no case. PS: the only good thing in the package bought from you was the organization of the safari. But I think it is more the merit of your partner Zara.

Dear Carmen, Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are sorry that your tour with us did not meet your expectations. I know you are in dialogue with my colleague regarding the points raised and she will respond to your latest email with a thorough walk through of the elements of concern. A dream of a trip

The trip was a dream. The package offered by Afrikasafari was fully delivered. All expectations were met. The Safari tour followed by the 6 days in a resort in Zanzibar was well complemented. Things to improve: ensure all safari drivers have knowledge and can tell the group about what is happening! our driver either didnt know much or was too quite. We got to know that other drivers were extremely talkative and this makes the tour even more interesting and fun. The lunch boxes were good at the beginning and turned bad at the end. Thanks!

To Our friends in Asiatours and Buffalotours. Our Holidays i Cambodia were a very good experience, particularly in Seam Reap and Battambang area. Our guide, Mr Sokly Phok and our driver Mr Smey, from Buffalotours, give us excellent service. Not trusted and reliable agency

From 14-29.02.2020 I visited Costa Rica through Lamatours.no (Tom Søndergaard). I had a very bad experience with them. Its not to be trusted and reliable agency. 1. Lamatours.no is using not reliable local agency. In Costa Rica the local egency was Ecole Travel Their emergency phone was not answering I tried to get in-touch with them without any results many times through WhatsApp. So they knew my phone but never rang me back. 2. Manipulations with hotels. a. I was proposed nice hotels in Costa Rica (by Tom) before I booked a trip and payed non refundable sum, b. I payed non refundable sum. c. All hotels were changed after I payed non refundable sum. For the same class as Tom said. Maybe they had same amount of stars but they were having much lower rating in Trip Adviser. You can ask for better hotels but all better hotels are going to be of cause all luxury and are more expensive. So the price for your trip grows. 3. Badly organised excursion. We were changing boat to the bus on the way from Tortoguero to La Fortuna. We dragged our luggage by ourselves up a steep, muddy, slippery slope. I still have pains in my arm. Then we waited for the bus standing under heavy tropical rain. Other agencies were using local people who carried tourist’s luggage in the trucks to the already waiting busses. 4. Lamatours.no is not paying any attention to your wishes. I asked for a beach hotel with 0 m to the beach, snorkeling, safe sea. I got a road hotel (Costa Verde), 40 minutes down steep slope to the sea (6 min by bus up the hill), surfing, rip currents. The agency never told me the truth about the hotel location and unfriendly environment around it. Whats more they gave me false assurance about my accomodation in the hotel which according to the hotel policy could not be carried out. There are plenty of hotels situated on the beach, some of them door to door with National Park where I had to go each day by taxi both ways. You really can't use bus because then some part of the way you have to walk under sun, wait for the bus on the bus stop without shadow perhaps for 30 min. I am absolutely sure that Tom didn't have such experience I am tremendously disappointed by the agency. The public beach is dirty, there are no toilets for free I am really travelling a lot and first time i ran into such awful service, hopefully for the last

Hi Elena. I have received your feedback from your trip to Costa Rica. We are very satisfied with our partner in Costa Rica. We have worked with them for many years. They are very professionel, provide high levels of service and take amazing care of our guests. So, I am surprised that you have problems getting in contact with them. You had one change of hotels on your entire trip. It was in La Fortuna, where you had an upgrade hotel, so I'm sorry that you feel we manipulate with the choice of hotels. The quoted hotels are of 3-4 stars and we had received a lot of fine feedback of all the hotels you stayed at. If you wanted to upgrade it is true there would be a supplement. I dont know exactly which excursion you are thinking about. You have known the location of Hotel Costa Verde from the start. There are no hotels directly on the beach in Manuel Antonio. The hotels are located so they have the beautiful view of the Pacific Coast and the rainforest. You are welcome to send an email to us if you would like that we look more into the above matters. Kind regards, Lamatours.no Tom Søndergaard

14 day China - Overall great experience with a few minor disappointments

Great trip! We have seen a lot of amazing things during our travel. Highlights: "Gyldne pagode og Huazang Si" in Emeishan, the monestary where we spend two nights, the lunch at a local family, the waterfights in Huanglongxi, the panda centre in Chendu, the "Jiuzhaigou nasjonalpark" and Mu Ni Gou near Songpan, and of course the great wall, forbidden city and temple of heaven in Beijing. Our guides in Congqing, Chendu and Bejing were amazing. Our suitcases did not arrive with us at the airport of Congqing. We reported this and gave them the hotel name and address where we were supposed to stay. In the arrival hall we met the guide, and she told us we were actually going to stay in a different hotel. But then she made sure that our suitcases were delivered there, instead of the hotel we registered earlier. Note: the reason our suitcases did not arrive with us, was because the transfer time at Guangzhou airport was less than 2 hours. Second comment: having a full day schedule directly after arrival is tough. The guide in Leshan/Chendu was really good and friendly. She really made an effort to give us a good time and we had some wonderful meals with here. We fell in love the with the Sichuan cuisine :) The guide in Songpan was a big disappointment. The paperworks say that he would come and pick us up at the busstation of Songpan. Instead, when we arrived we were jumped on by locals with hotel flyers, and who did not speak English. Because of this we almost forgot our suitcases that were still in the bus. We tried calling the guide, and he did not pick up. Then an old man came to us holding a cellphone and it turned out to be the guide. He told us to follow that man, and join him in his riksha. In the riksha, we could not take the suitcases with us. So we had to leave those unattended, and he would pick them up later. We were not comfortable with this arrangement. We switched the two tours Mu Ni Gou and Jiuzhaigou nasjonalpark because of the weather. When we went to the Jiuzhaigou nasjonalpark the guide gave us two options to enter the park: with our without him. We said "with" and after that he was just complaining that he really didn't want to, and that he thought it was boring, because he had already seen it so many times. Also while we were there, he did not explain anything about the things we were seeing. In the busses in the park, there was a video during which a lot was explained, but he could not reproduce. Also the lunch there was horrible - he just booked the cheapest buffet option available (we saw that on the receipt), while we asked for the medium priced one (and he said he actually booked that). Also if we asked what the different foods were, he acted annoyed, probably because he just did not realize that we can't read the signs. Next day was rain, so we postponed the Mu Ni Gou trip to the day after. This meant we had to spend the entire day in Songpan doing nothing. You're done exploring this village in 2-3 hours time, which we already did on the day of arrival there. The guide also said he would not join us on that trip, because he was very very ill. He had to go to the hospital, because he had a blister...... So, the chauffeur (who did not speak english) brought us to Mu Ni Gou and we were left wandering around on our own. After our visit there, we left for the airport. Ad quite frankly we were relieved to leave this place. Over the course of these three days, the guide only said that the tibetan culture in this part of China is very important. But he never explained us more about that culture than just that. Furthermore, he only spoke to my husband. Even if I asked a question, he would give the answer to my husband. We experienced this guide as very rude and unmotivated. We actually had the impression that he was not an official guide. We just happened to stay in his hotel, and he is maybe one of the few people there that speaks English. He also had to pay normal entrance fees for himself and did not have a badge. Note: the stay in Songpan is too long. We would rather have spend an extra day in Beijing or Chendu, instead of doing nothing for a whole day in Songpan. The nature in the parks around Songpan is amazing, but there is not enough to do in town. In Beijing, we again had an excellent guide. Only glitch, was that the driver who was picking us up at the airport was waiting for us at the wrong exit. So, we had to call our contact person in Beijing to fix this. The guide in Beijing was very enthusiastic and was very eager to give us a good time. She explained a lot about the different places we visited. Thumbs up! So, overall we have had a really exciting and interesting holiday. And we are very happy that we have had the opportunity to visit China and see both the cities and the countryside. We will definitely recommend this trip, except for the Songpan-part of the trip.

Bruce Springsteen and Steven Van Zandt at the Bruce Springsteen And The E Street Band concert held at the Kia Forum on April 4, 2024 in Los Angeles, California.

Popular on Variety

Springsteen hasn’t spoken so much publicly about the condition that took him off the road for six months, and which caused these particular L.A. dates to be postponed for four. But something about his first Forum show Thursday caused him to get a little bit chattier about the malady.

“We’re sorry we missed you last time,” he said during a spoken interlude in the middle of an epic version of “Tenth Avenue Freezeout,” being performed as the show’s penultimate number  after the setlist had already passed the three-hour point. “I hope we didn’t put you out too much. But, man,” he elaborated, “I had the worst motherfucking bellyache you could ever imagine.”

“When I sang, my belly ached,” he said.

“When I did anything, my belly ached,” he continued.

Bruce Springsteen has fire in the belly. Lucky for him and everyone else, it’s back to being a fire that does not consume.

At a length of three hours and 20 minutes, Springsteen’s opening Forum show pretty much set the bar for not gentle into that good Thursday night. Its 200-minute running time was 40 minutes longer than most other sets of his lately, all of which already test and transcend what a guy in his early 70s who recently recovered from illness ought to be pulling off. It’s reductive, though, to focus too much on the running time, which makes it feel like an endurance test or marathon. Yes, every minute added onto a show beyond the tour mean confers some kind of badge of pride on attendees, and it’s great fun to start doing the numbers as a show begins to expand… but the miracle is not just that he endures.

The miracle is that he bobs and weaves with a dynamic setlist that needs that much expansiveness to sufficiently cover multiple moments of sorrow or grief and “Twist and Shout” (should you be so lucky to get that bonus track as a celebration of life, as Thursday’s crowd did).

As fans have already noted during these first few weeks of the 2024 touring resumption, the setlists tend to be only about 75% set in stone. That’s to say, they’re much looser than when the E Street Band hit the road again in 2023, closer to how they used to be in legendary days of yore. For anyone who likes to go to more than one show on a tour, or just for anybody who enjoys knowing they’re in the presence of some free-spiritedness, this flexibility is a godsend.

Given that the surprises each night are added onto the surety of some of the most powerful song sequences he’s ever constructed for a tour, a 2024 Bruce Springsteen show is really something that gives “overstuffed” a good name.

Most of his shows on this show have opened with “Lonesome Day,” which is nearly an overture for the conflicted lyrical feelings that will come up in the emotionally dynamic hours to come. But occasionally he’ll start off with a ringer in advance even of that opener. Thursday, it was a cover of John Lee Hooker’s “Boom Boom,” which ain’t nothing but primal — the blues as filtered through a “Nuggets” sensibility. He hadn’t done this oldie since 2016, which augured well for tour premieres and oddities.

Would an oldie this obscure count among the highlights of a three-hour-plus set that includes an inordinate amount of the best rock songs ever written? On the face of it, no. Or yes, for that segment of fans that lives for the idea of audibles being called.

The biggest surprise of the night: the return of Patti Scialfa, who performed on a few 2023 shows and then disappeared from public view. (“Where’s Patti?” isn’t quite up there with “Where’s Shelly?,” but it still remained a question.) Now we knew, without the FBI being called in: His bride is just living her post-E-Street life, happy to show up for a cameo instead of being tied to a recurring gig. “My baby’s back!,” Springsteen exclaimed, kicking off the first of two numbers the couple performed as a team. The recently rare “Tougher Than the Rest” featured Scialfa leaning in close on their single mic for harmony, followed by “Fire.” That number, Springsteen said, hadn’t been played “in a long time. We did do it on Broadway,” he clarified, but “Patti’s never done it.” By which he possibly meant never performed it as a full-on duet; his wife unexpectedly got the first verse of this ‘70s perennial all to herself. (Patti as a Pointer Sister, to name the group that really made the song famous? Live long enough, and all sorts of things can happen.)

The bones of the set were otherwise mostly intact. “Prove It All Night” follows “Lonesome Day” at the beginning, as a promise. But sometimes it seems like rock ‘n’ roll’s power as an elixir won’t be enough, if you’re reallly following how an underlying narrative develops.

“Ghosts” and “Letter to You,” both from the album of the latter name, overtly introduce the theme of loss, so often returned to. Then the mournful hits keep coming, as pointed segues. “My City of Ruins,” whose “Rise up” chorus barely disguises just how sad it is, goes in for more than 10 minutes, with cheerful chatter, as Bruce introduces the band, followed by bittersweet moments dedicated to the group’s fallen members. That in memoriam segued into a cover of the Commodores’ ‘80s hit “Nightshift,” which pays homage to soul music’s lost ‘60s and ‘70s greats, including Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson.

The soul memorial led into “Last Man Standing,” his song about realizing he was the last surviving member of his original band — a song so solemn it’s performed just by Springsteen and a solitary trumpeter, who might as well be playing “Taps.” From there, much of the crowd is relieved to hear Springsteen singing something as light as “Backstreets”… or is it? “Until the end… until the end…,” he sang, drawing one line out into a chant. It’s a “Born to Run”-based suite that has finally, after 49 year, turned into the requiem it was apparently always meant to be.

And then, as this emotionally fraught show drew closer to a close, we got the Three Stooges. That is, during the go-for-broke joy of “Rosalita,” there was a moment when the otherwise stone-faced Little Steven Van Zandt drew close to Springsteen and they indulged in some Larry, Curly and Moe-style face-poking, prodding, mugging and noise-making.

Springsteen has put on a tour that is the most bittersweet show on earth, until it finally settles for being the happiest, and occasionally even goofiest… and then turns heartbreaking again for the final encore. The most abrupt segue might be the final one, when, having climaxed with “Tenth Avenue” and (on this particular night) “Twist and Shout,” he sent the rest of the band off to their sleep while he serenaded the crowd with a completely solo number, “I’ll See You in My Dreams,” boldly sending the audience out thinking again about loved ones they’ve lost, if with a ballad that feels like a comforting lullaby. By the end of the show, he’s kept all these things in balance enough that any of these notes feel like they could be an honest place to land, whether it’s with an Isley Brothers tent revival or a heart-rending ode to creating memories as a means of cheating death.

Given his stage mastery, was it possible Springsteen was moving even himself with this show? It’s probably risky i to parse exactly what emotions a showman this great might be spontaneously feeling. The most deeply emotional moments are deeply baked into the tour. As always, he gave the much-quoted speech about his old friend and bandmate George Theiss’ passing, about the clarity that death brings the living. This should be rote for Springsteen by now, given how little variation he introduces into the homily, as he retells it. Yet his closed eyes looked moist enough as he eulogized his teenaged soulmate once again Thursday night. Honestly, it could also just have been perspiration (even though his face didn’t look that sweaty in the closeups seen on the two big screens for the rest of the show).

Either way, sweat or tears, it was working, like it’s always worked for a few generations now. “You’ll need a good companion for this part of the ride,” Springsteen sang toward the end of the show in “Land of Hope of Dreams,” part of the tumult of climactic numbers. Maybe he didn’t mean that line as an actual rock ‘n’ roll direct-sales pitch at the time he wrote it, but he sure keeps living up to it.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Get Loose in Los Angeles

By Ethan Millman

Ethan Millman

Three hours into Bruce Springsteen ‘s epic return to Los Angeles on Thursday night with the E Street Band, he stared down the sold-out crowd at the Forum. “Do you have anything left?” he shouted, midway through “Twist and Shout,” the second-to-last song of his first L.A. show in eight years. Five decades in, the magic of a Springsteen show remains: He always seems to have a little bit left in the tank.

The 2024 version of the tour has been looser than last year’s, which stuck fairly close to a single set list, and Thursday was no exception. Springsteen kicked off with a true rarity, a cover of John Lee Hooker’s “Boom Boom” (most frequently played on the Tunnel of Love Express Tour back in 1988), before jumping into “Lonesome Day” (rarely played last year, but now a staple in the set) and “Prove It All Night,” then his live -favorite arena-rock reworking of Jimmy Cliff’s “Trapped.”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Six dates into their return to the road, Springsteen and the E Street Band sounded like they had never been interrupted. “Are you having fun yet? Because we haven’t had fun yet,” Springsteen told the crowd just over an hour into his show. “This is our pre-fun. We’re here to wake you up, shake you up, and take you to higher ground. The E Street Band is here to bring the joyous power of rock & roll into your life. But we need your help. We plan on sending you home with your feet hurting, your hands hurting, your ass in paralysis, and your sexual organs stimulated.”

Springsteen maintains a remarkably simple setup and show presentation compared to the other blockbuster live shows currently on the road. The visuals are limited to video screens and elegant stage lights, keeping the focus on the 17 musicians onstage with him. He doesn’t really need much else.

Our guide Peter Minja at the company…

Our guide Peter Minja at the company Zara Tours for Tourcompass made our whole safari experince. He was super experienced with the Serengeti Area and made sure we saw the Big Five. We had the best days of our lives thanks to him and the safari. He is unafraid, funny and accurate and we really had the best time with him. He even sings well and make everyone feel at home. I would highly recommend him to anyone doing the safari! 5/5, Asante Sana.

Wonderful safari experience

My wife and I had our second Tanzania safari and beach holiday trip with aufsafari.de. Both times we were impressed with all the arrangements in Tanzania. The staff are professional, friendly and competent. We had a missed connecting flight to Kilimanjaro. The alternative arrangements were made promptly such that we could enjoy our trip fully as planned. We always felt that we were good hands and could count on the professional and friendly staff. I would certainly recommend this travel agent for any safari trips to Africa.

Lieber Herr Horsthemke.

A great journey...

With this trip we joined a very well organized and motivated team that facilitated a safe and interesting journey to the top of the roof of Africa. The first welcome at airport and the drive to the Springland Hotel in Moshi was well prepared. In the hotel, we had a short introduction and we enjoyed two lovely days. The most surprising event was when we first met our guide on the second day. His name was Jibril, and he has fascinated us already with his first speech saying that from now on we would be a family and we together will walk to the top of Kilimanjaro. This was quite motivating for me, since until that point I was just thinking I would join my wife along the trip as long as I have energy and I would step out at one of the huts along the road. However, Jibril was saying that three things would be important to reach the top: first, to drink enough water, pole-pole (walk slowly) and the most important point to believe in yourself - at that point I was staring at him thinking - Hey with this guy - you can make it. The rest is just history. I would like to thank you for the excellent support and would like to congratulate you for having such a nice team. With best wishes K&N Some minor points: Please inform visitors when traveling to Tansania or Zazibar, that both Euros and Dollars are accepted at most places, however in the case of dollars - dollar-bills before 2016 will be rejected.

Woods stands 1 under through 13 holes, two inside projected cut line as he eyes history Friday

Change Text Size

You can't win the Masters on Thursday, but you can lose it, as the adage goes. Tiger Woods didn't lose it.

After heavy storms overnight delayed the Masters' start by two-and-a-half hours Thursday morning, Woods teed off at 3:54 p.m. ET and stood 1 under through 13 holes as play was suspended due to darkness, an encouraging start as he seeks his sixth green jacket – and a record 24th consecutive Masters made cut.

The first round will resume at 7:50 a.m. ET Friday, with the second round beginning at 8 a.m.

Woods started fast with a birdie at the par-4 opening hole, his first Masters-opening birdie since 1999, and he remained steady as the conditions dried out Thursday afternoon. Woods, 48, made bogey at the par-3 fourth but responded with a two-putt birdie at the par-5 eighth, turning in 1-under 35. He made three straight crafty up-and-down pars on Nos. 10-12, then escaped the trees en route to par at the par-5 13th, his final hole of the day.

"The wind was all over the place," Woods said Thursday evening. "It was one of the most tricky days that I've ever been a part of. It was hard to get a beat not only on what direction it was going, but the intensity, and it kept switching all over the place, and then you had to – the timing was affecting putts on the greens. It was a very difficult day."

Woods was tied for 17th, six back of leader Bryson DeChambeau, as play was halted for the evening. DeChambeau posted 7-under 65 earlier in the day, one clear of world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler's 6-under 66.

Woods entered the week on a streak of 23 consecutive made cuts at the Masters, sharing the all-time record with Fred Couples and Gary Player. He'll have a chance Friday to hold that record alone, but expected windy conditions (up to 34 mph) should offer a challenge for Woods and the field at large.

Woods will complete the last five holes of his opening round Friday morning, take a short break and quickly turn to the second round.

"It was nice to finish up 13," Woods said. "We're going to warm up and just kind of head down there and start our round, and I think the flow would be pretty much almost like between 20 and 30 minutes in between rounds, so it'll be a natural flow from the finish of the first round and continuation of the second.

"The body is okay. We've got some work to do yet tonight."

After undergoing ankle surgery following a WD during the third round of last year’s Masters, Woods returned to TOUR competition at The Genesis Invitational in February, where he opened in 1-over 72 but withdrew during the second round due to flu-like symptoms. The Masters is Woods’ first start since withdrawing at The Genesis, and he said Tuesday that he still believes he can contend and win. That’s why he’s here, after all.

“If everything comes together, I think I can get one more,” said the five-time Masters winner on Tuesday.

His play so far validates that belief.

Read below for a hole-by-hole look at Woods' opening round at Augusta National.

Hole 13 (par 5, 545 yards): Woods plays a fade off the tee but overcooks it, as the ball sails into the collection of pine straw amidst a dense tree line right of the fairway. It means he can't go for the green, and he escapes the trees with a low punch shot that reaches the first cut just short of the fairway, leaving a 191-yard approach for his third shot.

Faced with a hanging lie and Rae's Creek closely guarding the green, Woods strikes a crisp iron shot that lands hole-high and stops on a dime, leaving a reasonable look from roughly 20 feet. The horn blows for darkness, allowing players to finish their current hole if they choose, as Woods walks to the green.

Woods opts to complete the hole; his right-to-left breaking birdie try pulls up a couple feet short. He makes his par to remain in red figures overnight. All in all, a promising start for the five-time Masters winner. It will be a marathon Friday as he eyes a record 24th consecutive made cut at Augusta National.

Woods 1-under thru 13

Hole 12 (par 3, 150 yards): As the twilight begins and the wind continues to gust, Woods pulls 7-iron and flies it over the green, a trend that has emerged with his mid-irons on this Thursday. The ball settles in the pine straw roughly 30 feet past the hole, but once again he displays a sublime short game with a softly played bump-and-run that trundles to 6 feet.

Woods drains the par putt, his third straight crafty par save as darkness approaches at Augusta National. He'll head to the par-5 13th tee.

Woods 1-under thru 12

Hole 11 (par 4, 520 yards): Woods has played this hole a cumulative 17 over across his career, but he has no such trouble on the tee shot Thursday, striping it down the fairway's left side as he begins Augusta National's famed Amen Corner. Faced with a lengthy second shot from 209 yards, he strikes it well with a long iron but the ball perhaps catches a gust of wind; it lands in the front fairway and settles some 80 feet short of the hole.

Woods' magnificent short game is on display once again, as he executes a high flop shot that lands softly and releases to tap-in range. He saves par, his second straight impressive up-and-down to begin the back nine. Darkness will approach soon; it appears he might only complete one more hole Thursday. Onward to the famed par-3 12th across Rae's Creek.

Woods 1-under thru 11

Hole 10 (par 4, 495 yards): Woods positions a fairway metal safely in the fairway's right side on the majestic downhill par 4, but he misses the green right with his second shot from 216 yards, leaving a slippery greenside bunker shot.

Ever a short-game magician, Woods has no troubles with his third shot from the bunker, playing a nifty splash shot that lands in the fairway cut and releases to leave a 4-foot uphill par putt. The patrons roar with deserving approval. He drains the par putt, dead center, to stay in red figures.

Woods 1-under thru 10

Hole 9 (par 4, 460 yards): Woods is finding a comfort zone off the tee, striping this drive 312 yards, perfectly positioned in the fairway's right side, leaving a good angle from 169 yards. He selects an 8-iron that tracks toward the hole, but the ball can't reach the back tier on which the hole is positioned; the ball lands on the ridge beween tiers and rolls back onto the green's middle tier, leaving a 33-foot birdie putt.

Woods' uphill birdie putt has solid pace but grinds to a halt 2 feet short. He cleans up his par to turn in 1-under 35, a promising start to the Masters. He stands T15 at the turn, six back of leader Bryson DeChambeau. He's two inside the current projected cut line of 1 over.

Woods' playing partner Max Homa turns in 3-under 32. Safe to say the group's vibes are high.

Woods 1-under thru 9

Hole 8 (par 5, 570 yards): Woods blisters driver down the right-center of the fairway, utilizing a high cut that puts him in position to reach the green in two. He does just that with a bold strike from 242 yards, the ball landing softly on the green's right collar to leave a 40-foot eagle putt.

Woods leaves his eagle try 5 feet short, but the birdie putt slides into the cup's right side. With his second birdie of the day, he's in red figures once again.

Woods 1-under thru 8

Hole 7 (par 4, 450 yards): Woods tugs a fairway metal just left of the fairway, the ball settling in the first cut but requiring a low punch to elude a dense grove of trees. He plays his 171-yard second shot accordingly, a low bullet that tracks toward the hole but can't clear a front greenside bunker.

Woods' bunker shot is a short-game master class, the ball landing some 10 feet short of the hole and releasing beautifully, leaving a 2-footer to save par. He has no trouble doing so.

Woods even-par thru 7

Hole 6 (par 3, 192 yards): Woods takes an aggressive line with a mid-iron; the ball tracks toward the hole's left side and lands roughly 15 feet short-right of the hole, but it catches the slope and feeds back onto the green's front portion, leaving a cross-country birdie try up a tier from 42 feet.

In what could be either a misread or a mis-hit, Woods' birdie putt misses short and right of the hole, leaving a knee-knocker for par. He has no trouble, though, draining the 5-footer for an adventurous two-putt par.

Woods even-par thru 6

Hole 5 (par 4, 495 yards): Woods pulls driver on the demanding par 4 and plays a feathery cut that splits the fairway's right-center portion. The five-time Masters winner hoists a mid-iron from 200 yards that lands softly on the green's proper level, offering a mid-range birdie try.

Woods' 16-foot birdie try has a good line but isn't struck hard enough, settling a couple feet short. He cleans up his par to remain level on the round.

Woods even-par thru 5

Hole 4 (par 3, 177 yards): Woods flushes an iron on Augusta National's first par 3; similar to his third shot on the par-5 second, the ball flies too far, settling in the second cut just beyond the green. He faces a slippery downhill chip, the green sloping away, and bumps the ball into the fringe on a line some 20 feet left of the hole; the ball releases onto the green and rolls well past, leaving a 25-foot par attempt from the front portion of the green's back section.

Woods' par putt is well judged, but the right-to-left bender just misses on the hole's right edge. He taps in for his first bogey of the week.

Woods even-par thru 4

Hole 3 (par 4, 350 yards): Woods settles in with the driver, playing a tight cut that eludes the short par 4's myriad fairway bunkers, the ball traveling 334 yards down the middle. From roughly 70 feet, he plays a bump-and-run second shot into the hill that releases just past the hole, leaving a 12-foot birdie try.

Woods can't convert the birdie, as he plays too much break on the left-to-right slider; the ball stays out on the left side. He taps in for a comfortable par, remaining in the Thursday red.

Woods 1-under thru 3

Hole 2 (par 5, 585 yards): Woods pulls driver but is unhappy with the swing immediately; he points to the left as the ball misses the fairway on the left side. The ball travels 319 yards, but it settles just inches from a tree's thick base, with 237 yards remaining to the hole. After some analysis and deliberation, he turns an iron upside-down and makes a left-handed swing, advancing the ball roughly 40 yards back into the fairway, enough to offer a clear angle for his third shot to the green.

Woods selects a 6-iron for his third shot from 190 yards; he stripes it but the ball flies too far, settling in the fairway cut beyond the green's back side. He plays a pitch-and-run with a mid-iron for his fourth, the ball not getting more than a few inches above surface level; it releases through the fringe and rolls to 5 feet. "Absolutely brilliant," said analyst Dottie Pepper. The slippery downhiller has some right-to-left movement, but he drips the par putt into the hole's left center with sublime pace. Crisis averted.

Woods 1-under thru 2

Hole 1 (par 4, 445 yards): Sporting a salmon shirt in his new Sun Day Red branding, Woods stripes a fairway metal with plenty of left-to-right movement, the ball starting down the left side but cutting back perfectly to the center of the fairway. He doesn't miss a beat on his second shot from 169 yards, striping a short iron to 8 feet. The patrons roar in approval.

Woods takes advantage of the early opportunity, as the right-to-left breaker curves into the center of the cup with perfect pace. Birdie to start. It's the first time since 1999 that he has carded birdie on his first hole of the Masters.

Woods 1-under thru 1

In ‘Company’ for the Digital Age, Life is Frenetic, Overwhelming, and Surreal

Britney Coleman and the North American Tour of "Company" at Citizens Bank Opera House.

“Company” begins with a room. It is sparsely furnished and remarkable in its mundanity: a folding chair, a table, and a few coat hangers tacked to a gray wall. When birthday girl Bobbie (Britney Coleman) — holding helium-filled number balloons that scream “35” — bursts through the door, only to collapse into the chair and pour herself a glass of wine as she listens to her voicemails, the audience viscerally feels her exhaustion.

“Company” arrives at Boston’s Citizens Bank Opera House as part of its second North American tour. This particular iteration of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s 1970 production comes to Boston from Broadway, though it was first staged in London’s West End — in other words, “Company” is a show that has been repeated, altered, and reproduced, time and time again. In her revival, director Marianne Elliott has changed the perennial bachelor Bobby to perennial bachelorette Bobbie; the setting, though still New York City, has been moved from Sondheim’s era to modern times.

With its numerous reproductions and historical baggage, perhaps “Company” never had any choice but to confront the monotony of daily life, even as time relentlessly marches forward; It does so exceedingly well, grappling with modern day problems with humor and ingenuity. The musical explores every inch of what it means to exist in the digital age, along with the endless obligations that one has to friends and acquaintances. The musical makes abundantly clear how one can be surrounded by loved ones and still feel incredibly lonely.

“Phone rings, door chimes, in comes company,” goes the famous line from the show, and indeed it’s true: Elliott fantastically stresses how privacy is anachronistic to modern life. Set designer Bunny Christie divides the stage via small moving cubicles that function as rooms, and choreographer Liam Steel uses the cramped space wonderfully to emphasize how suffocated Bobbie feels. As the ensemble of Bobbie’s friends surprise her with a birthday party in the song “Company,” they squeeze into Bobbie’s room, pressing up and jostling against each other as they pose in multiple positions. Personal space is non-existent, and as Bobbie’s well-meaning friends — who are all coupled up — smother her with love and affection, a sense of claustrophobia engulfs the scene.

“Company” implicates its audience as it examines the digital age — and in this sense, perhaps the performance begins before the lights dim, with the disembodied voice that invites theater-goers to put their phones away before the musical starts. Though a ubiquitous theater announcement, it’s an ironic reminder in this context: The audience remains plugged in for the next two hours as the cast of “Company” fully incorporates social media into its performance. The characters take selfies, accompanied by the blinding flash of lights; the rooms, too, are outlined with LED lights reminiscent of Instagram’s square posts, as if the vignettes unfolding within were contained to a screen. The show interrogates how the digital age has eroded any semblance of peace that an individual can achieve, adding another dimension to the musical’s theme of appearance versus reality. As actors hold out their phones to take photos at seemingly random junctures, the audience understands their desperation to pause time, or to grasp at some ephemeral moment.

Elliott, in an interview with The New York Times , explains how theater “should have something to say to the now” — and though never truly explicit, this adaptation of “Company” has wholly embraced its zeitgeist. As Jamie (Matt Rodin) stresses about getting married to his boyfriend, one cannot help but think of how queer couples rush towards marriage for fear of changing laws ; and as Bobbie frets about how single she is, the ticking clock that accompanies each stage transition reminds the audience of female biological clock and pressures on women to get married early .

The characters of “Company” are running out of time in a world that moves at a rapid clip, a theme that is strongest when the show fully embraces the absurdities of the contemporary. Sondheim and Furth’s original production saw “Company” as a concept musical, in which time is malleable and played with through a series of vignettes that could, ostensibly, be occurring simultaneously. Elliott takes this impulse and runs with it, and as a result the show displays a temporal surreality that manifests as physical absurdity. At one point in the second act, the “35” number balloons which Bobbie holds in the opening scene reappear, but as human-sized inflatables which drift around the stage — such interventions prove mischievous and quirky, and work to a wonderful effect.

Given all this, it is no surprise that the technical team of “Company” has an illusionist, Chris Fisher, whose work shines particularly in the physical comedy of “Getting Married Today.” As Jamie gets cold feet before his wedding, the scene is enhanced as the vicar pops up like a poltergeist throughout his industrial kitchen — disappearing behind a door, springing up from a cake, emerging from a fridge. Jamie’s over-the-top reactions to the shock of seeing the vicar adds to his incredibly hilarious rendition.

But the digital age isn’t just overwhelming: It’s isolating, too. Christie’s set allows for the rooms to feel cramped and claustrophobic, but also underscores the paradox of being connected and, somehow, alone. At times, the set’s various sized rooms fit together snugly even as characters remain alone in rooms, reinforcing Bobbie’s loneliness despite being surrounded by friends. As Coleman cries, “I’m ready now! Someone, I’m ready!” in “Marry Me a Little,” the desperation of Bobbie is heartbreakingly palpable.

The tension between being constantly tuned in and isolated is abandoned at certain junctures of the show, and it is these scenes that make the show feel somewhat stagnant. Bobbie finds herself alone within the second act as she begins to wrestle more and more with the prospect of settling down, but these moments sometimes feel contrived in their simplicity, given the overall frenetic energy of the show. In a scene where Joanne (Judy McLane) and Bobbie watch Joanne’s partner Larry (Derrick Davis) dance in a nightclub, the staging feels stale: Joanne and Bobbie remain seated in high-top chairs throughout the lengthy conversation, making the scene feel inert. And as Coleman takes center stage in “Being Alive,” with little action happening around her, one cannot help but wish that more was done with the staging. Despite this, “Company” remains magnificent as it balances between the individual and the collective, and the perennial question — how does one know when it’s time to settle down? — is consistently interwoven throughout the show.

The original “Company” first premiered in Boston’s Shubert Theatre on March 24, 1970, with Bobby blowing out his candles, alone, at the end of the show. Less than ten minutes away from its original premiere location, Bobbie steps back into the room where she first began the show and sits down alone at her table, facing a cake too big for her to finish on her own, and dotted with 35 birthday candles. As she blows out the candles in the show’s finale, just as Bobby did 54 years before her, one thing is clear. “Company” has reproduced, yet again, another fantastic musical — one that honors the original while being a sublime adaptation of our contemporary times.

“Company” runs at the Citizens Bank Opera House through April 14.

Packers set off on Tailgate Tour, with an eye on Brazil as well

tour compass reviews

GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Packers still are in the running to open the season in Brazil, but are unlikely to go to London this year.

The Philadelphia Eagles open the season on Sept. 6, a Friday, in São Paulo at Arena Corinthians, home to the Brazilian soccer team the SC Corinthians. The team that will play the Eagles has yet to be announced by the NFL. The Packers or the Cleveland Browns are reported to be the top choices. The Packers expect an announcement at any time.

"We are still in the running," Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy said Tuesday before the Packers Tailgate Tour bus departed Lambeau Field for southern Wisconsin. "I think we are either the first- or second-most popular team in Brazil. We are kind of the people's team. People really like the idea of a community-owned team. If we are chosen, we'll gladly go."

Teams designated for international games this year include the Eagles in Sao Paulo; the Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars in London; and the Carolina Panthers in Munich, Germany. The Packers have road games against the Eagles, Vikings, Bears and Jaguars. Divisional games are no longer automatically excluded, but Murphy said a London trip was not likely.

"I don't think that's a possibility," he said.

Packers Tailgate Tour will cover 500 miles in southern Wisconsin

The 500-mile tailgate tour, which includes current and former Packers players, plus Murphy, will continue through Saturday. Announced stops include Kenosha, Beloit, Platteville and Sun Prairie. Unannounced stops also will be made along the way.

Current players on the bus include Elgton Jenkins, Kenny Clark and Rasheed Walker. Former players include Bryan Bulaga, Mike Daniels and Alex Green. Jenkins was on the tour in 2023, as well.

"I had a lot of fun last year," Jenkins said. "I like interacting with kids."

The current and former players each said they were excited about the Packers' prospects this year. In 2023, the Packers, against expectations, finished with a 9-8 record, defeated the favored Dallas Cowboys in the playoffs and nearly defeated the San Francisco 49ers in the next round. They did defeat the Super Bowl-winning Kansas City Chiefs during the regular season. Last year was expected to be a rebuilding year for the Packers.

Jenkins said Packers players during the offseason are getting ready for the coming year. "We have to be ready to start fast," he said.

Rasheed Walker gets positive reviews from bus mates

Rasheed Walker, who finished last season as the starting left tackle, got positive comments from Jenkins and former Packers tackle Brian Bulaga, who said he was looking forward to spending time with him on the bus.

"I could always kind of put a couple pointers in his ear for him and pick his brain a little bit about how he's doing and what he's thinking out there," Bulaga said. "At the end of the season, when he finally won that job over, I thought he did a nice job."

The Packers like paring former and current players on the tour because it gives the veterans a chance to mentor the young players. Jenkins and Clark are seasoned pros, but Walker, in only his second season last year, is still finding his way.

"If you're an offensive lineman and you're a young guy and you're starting, you're expected to hold your weight. It doesn't matter if you're a rookie, it doesn't matter what year, you're expected to hold your weight and play well," said Bulaga, who was drafted in the first round in 2010, became a starting tackle during the season and played in the Super Bowl.

Daniels, Clark looking forward to new defensive scheme

Defensive lineman Mike Daniels, who played for the Packers from 2012-18, is on his first tailgate tour. A fan favorite in Green Bay, Daniels said he was excited to meet fans in other parts of the state.

"People who don't live around the stadium have a different appreciation when they see the guys in green and gold," he said.

Daniels and Clark said they both were excited to see what new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley will bring to the team. They are looking forward to a more simplified scheme, which will allow players like Clark to take off.

"You might as well get Kenny Clark's Hall of Fame jacket ready now," Daniels said.

Clark said Hafley will challenge everybody to be great.

"I'm excited about (the new scheme) being more disruptive. That's better for me," Clark said. "It will give you that mentality to cut it loose."

Alex Green had a brief career, playing for Green Bay in 2011 and 2012, and the New York Jets in 2013, but that made him no less welcome as a Packers alumnus.

"You always hear, once a Packer, always a Packer," Green said.

The most beautiful experience

I start this review with a big Thank You to the Afrikareizen team !!! We appealed to them following other recommendations seen on the internet and we were extremely pleased with the availability to answer all our questions and concerns related to the holiday. Even though it's hard today to have a connection with someone you've never seen in your life, Jude was able to communicate with us as if we had known each other for many years, even from a distance. We highly recommend the company, and we are going to make other holiday plans with them as well. With much respect from us, Ciprian and Ariadna

We went with Afrikareizen to Tanzania…

We went with Afrikareizen to Tanzania to see the wild life and ended our trip on Diani Beach in Kenia for relaxing, There was allways a driver ready for pick up at the airport and at the hotels. We had an amazing holiday we saw the big five thanks to Hamza the game driver. flight back was quite an experience it could have taken like 9 hours now it took like 28 hours because Afrika reizen does not use charters but finds alternative flights which brought us to Ethopia and Vienna before landing in Amsterdam. Otherwise i would have given 5 stars for sure.
