Tour Down Under 2023 Parcours etappe 3: Norwood - Campbelltown

Al direct na de start gaat de weg omhoog. De klim naar Norton Summit is 9,6 kilometer lang en stijgt met een gemiddelde van 4,8%.

De rest van de dag bevinden de coureurs zich op een hoogte tussen de 300 en 500 meter boven zeeniveau. Twee beklimmingen springen eruit. Checker Hill is niet langer dan 1,1 kilometer, maar stijgt wel met een kloeke 9,4%. De top ligt op 37 kilometer van de finish.

De klim op Corkscrew Road ronden de renners met nog 7,5 kilometer te gaan. Het is een pittige kluif van 2,3 kilometer à 9,2% en met een steilste strook van 24,4%. Eenmaal boven wacht een technische afdaling naar Campbelltown.

In 2019 serveerde de Tour Down Under dezelfde finale. Richie Porte , Wout Poels , Michael Woods en George Bennett gingen ervandoor op de klim. Patrick Bevin , destijds raceleider, haalde de vijf terug in de afdaling, waarna Daryl Impey de sprint van een select gezelschap won. Eerdere winnaars na deze finale waren Simon Gerrans (2016, sprint van een selecte groep) en Cadel Evans (2014, solo).

Bij de tussensprints zijn 3, 2 en 1 seconden te winnen, terwijl de eerste drie renners aan de finishlijn 10, 6 en 4 bonificatieseconden krijgen.

Tour Down Under : Spanier Bilbao gewinnt dritte Etappe

Schachmann mit guter Form zu Rang 12

Das Trio aus Bilbao, Yates und Vine setzte sich sechs Kilometer vor Ende der Etappe an dem bis zu 13 Prozent steilen Anstieg auf der Corkscrew Road vom übrigen Fahrerfeld ab und hielt den Vorsprung von 28 Sekunden bis ins Ziel. Der gebürtige Berliner Maximilian Schachmann beendete die Etappe im südlichen Australien auf dem zwölften Rang. Dazu sagte der Bora-Hansgrohe-Fahrer: „Wie erwartet war es eine hektische Etappe mit einem noch hektischeren Finale. Der Schlussanstieg war ziemlich schwer. Wir haben versucht, gut in die Steigung hineinzufahren und dann vorne mit dabei zu sein. Das Niveau hier im Januar ist ziemlich hoch. Ich glaube so früh in der Saison hatte mir eben noch etwas gefehlt, um heute ein besseres Ergebnis einzufahren."

Australier Jay Vine übernimmt Gesamtführung

In der Gesamtwertung liegt nun Jay Vine 15 Sekunden vor dem Spanier Bilbao. Yates ist mit 16 Sekunden Rückstand Dritter. Bester Deutscher im Gesamtklassement der Tour Down Under 2023 ist Schachmann als Zwölfter mit 1:01 Minuten Rückstand.

Die vierte Etappe der Australien-Rundfahrt führt das Fahrerfeld am Samstag rund 135 Kilometer um das kleine Städtchen Willunga im Süden von Adelaide. Die Tour Down Under endet am Sonntag auf dem Mount Lofty östlich von Adelaide.
