The weather in Nainital is enjoyable throughout the year. Winter begins in November and it’s still pretty cold in March, with the temperature ranging from 2 to 11 degrees celsius in these months. April onwards, Nainital gradually becomes warmer, reaching up to 23 degrees celsius, which is a cool summer when compared to other North Indian cities. Nainital receives rainfall between mid-June and mid-September generally. Due to its closeness to the outer Himalayas, Nainital’s annual rainfall is pretty high.

Although Nainital weather is favourable throughout the year, Nainital tourism sees the maximum influx of tourists in the summer, which is the best time to visit Nainital. If you enjoy being outdoors during cold weather, the best season to visit Nainital would be winter when you can experience snowfall in Nainital. A lot of Nainital’s famous places such as Tiffin Top, Snow Peak and Nanda Devi temple can be seen while floating in a boat on the lake. The Mall Road

This is one of Nainital’s best places for a nice stroll to enjoy the evening breeze as you relish some local Pahadi food. The momos are particularly famous here. The locals involved in Nainital tourism have put up some stalls in the Tibetan Market and Bhotia Bazaar too for travellers to buy some traditional mementos to take back home. Life on this road mirrors the energy of the whole city! The Mall Road runs through the centre of Nainital, along Naini Lake. A shrine is said to have been there for thousands of years which pays homage to Goddess Sati, Lord Ganesh and Goddess Kali. The temple’s ceiling has two eyes that signify the remains of Goddess Sati. For a complete spiritual experience of Nainital tourism, the best time to visit Nainital is during the Nanda Ashtami festival organised every September at the Naina Devi temple. Nainital tourism welcomes thousands of tourists during Navratri and Chaitra as well. Nainital Zoo

Aside from the zoos in Sikkim and Darjeeling, Nainital tourism boasts of having one of the only high altitude zoos in India. Perched on Sher Danda hill, it houses many different kinds of animals such as the Royal Bengal Tiger, Himalayan Bear, and Tibetan Wolves. In fact, the last of the Siberian Tiger species in India took his last breath in this very zoo in 2011. Situated on Ayarpatta hill, Tiffin top, or Dorothy’s Seat, is another popular Nainital picnic spot. You can use the large binoculars here to enjoy the view and go on to indulge in some instant noodles and tea at the various snacks shops in the area.  You can reach it via road, but to experience the best Nainital sightseeing, the aerial ropeway is the preferred alternative. There is a Tibetan monastery called Gadhan Kunkyop Ling Gompa nearby as well that is worth a visit.    Pangot and Kilbury Bird Sanctuary 

This bird sanctuary is one of the most sought out places to visit near Nainital. At a distance of 13 kilometres from the main city is a village called Pangot, which is home to the Kilbury bird sanctuary. Nainital tourism encourages travellers to see the diverse species of birds inhabiting the sanctuary. Not only is this one of Nainital’s best places for people interested in avifauna, but the magnificent environment truly enhances one’s experience. Kilbury bird sanctuary reflects the best of Nainital tourism’s flora and fauna, which is why it should not be missed. • Sattal : The lake here is a confluence of all seven freshwater lakes in the area. It’s surprising how many tourists skip this place given how beautiful and serene it is (that’s probably the reason it still retains its untainted beauty). 
• Sariyatal : An ideal place to spend some time with yourself in solitude. 5 kilometres from Nainital, there is a Himalayan botanical garden here as well.
• Naukichiatal : The name of the place literally translates to ‘lake with nine corners’. With a depth of around 40 metres, it is the deepest of all seven lakes.  
• Khurpatal Lake : Situated in a secluded town, this lake gives birth to several natural springs. A diverse variety of fish can be found here.
• Corbett National Park : Located within the Nainital district, this is probably the most visited national park in North-India by wildlife lovers.
• Ranikhet : This is another one of the popular places near Nainital to enjoy the view and serenity of the Himalayas. 
• Mukteshwar : This town is situated at a high elevation on the Kumaon hills, 51 kilometres away from Nainital. It also has a mythological connection to Lord Shiva. Tourism is gradually growing there, but its beauty is still largely untouched.

• Ras : This is made of a mixture of different kinds of pulses like toor, gehet and channa, in a simple curry form, eaten with rice and chutney. It is easy to cook and highly nutritious — perfect for the inhabitants of the region.

The nearest railway station to Nainital is in Kathgodam, which is located at a distance of 23 kilometres. Cities like Delhi, Agra, Lucknow, Kolkata etc. have direct trains to Kathgodam every day. The journey from the railway station to Nainital is cheap and easy, with a number of buses and taxis (both private and shared) available.  By Air:

There is no Nainital airport, but people who want to visit the Kumaon region can still do so without any difficulties. Although there are no flights to Nainital, one can fly to the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi from anywhere in the world, which is about 300 kilometres from Nainital.  You can take a bus or taxi, or drive up to Nainital from Delhi then. There are also direct flights from Delhi to the Pantnagar Airport which is only 70 kilometres from Nainital.

Plan Your Trip to Uttarakhand's "City of Lakes"

The hill station of Nainital was a popular summer retreat for the British during the time they ruled India. It was discovered in 1841 by British businessman Peter Barren. These days, tourists from Delhi flock there to escape the summer heat. The town is actually made up of two areas, Tallital and Mallital, which are on either end of the lake and connected by The Mall. Mallital, at the top, is the older colonial part of town. The Mall, an action-filled strip that borders Naini Lake on the east side, is lined with restaurants, shops, hotels, and markets.

Nainital is 310 kilometers (193 miles) northeast of Delhi, in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand (previously known as Uttaranchal).

How to Get There

The nearest airport is at Pantnagar, about two hours away away. Air India flies there daily from Delhi. Tickets costs about 5,000 rupees one way.

The nearest train station is at Kathgodam, about an hour away. If you'd prefer to travel overnight, you can take the 15013 Ranikhet Express from Delhi. It departs daily from Old Delhi Junction at 10.05 p.m. and arrives at 5.05 a.m. Otherwise, the  12040 Kathgodam Shatabdi Express is a good option. It departs Delhi at 6 a.m. and reaches Kathgodam at 11.40 a.m.

Alternatively, Nainital is well connected with other parts of India by road and buses frequently run. It takes about eight hours to drive from Delhi to Nainital.

Weather-wise, the best months to visit Nainital are from March to June and from September to November. The area experiences heavy rainfall during the monsoon in July and August , and landslides do happen. Winters, from November to February, are very cold. Sometimes it snows in December and January. If you want peace, avoid peak season from May to mid-July, and Diwali festival in October or November.  Indian holiday makers converge on the place in droves and hotel prices skyrocket. Nainital is extremely crowded during these months, resulting in traffic jams and chaos.

You can walk all the way around Naini Lake in about an hour. There are quite a few Hindu temples on the west side of the lake, including one dedicated to Naina Devi. Naini Lake is said to be a manifestation of the emerald green left eye of Lord Shiva's wife, Sati. According to Hindu mythology, her eye fell to the spot while Lord Shiva was carrying the charred remains of her body. She immolated herself because her father didn't approve of her marriage to him.

Boating on the lake is an iconic thing to do in Nainital. Peddle boats, row boats, and small yachts are all available for hire.

If you have kids, they'll enjoy visiting the spacious and well laid-out Govind Ballabh Pant Zoo , which has some wonderfully exotic high-altitude species. Get there by taxi, shuttle bus from India Hotel, or a steep 20 minute walk from the bottom end of The Mall. The zoo is closed Mondays and national holidays. Tickets for Indian adults cost 100 rupees, and children 50 rupees. Foreigners pay 200 rupees for adults and 100 rupees for children.

For panoramic mountain vistas, take the cable car/aerial tramway up to Snow View. It departs from the top end of Mall Road (the lane behind Sakley's Restaurant and Pastry Shop leads to the ticket counter). Tickets cost 230 rupees for adults and 120 rupees for adults, for a round trip. Try and get there before 9 a.m. to avoid long lines. There's a small amusement park at the top, plus the usual snack and souvenir stalls. If you're feeling energetic, it's possible to hike to nearby viewpoints from Snow View. Local guides are available.

The hike up to Dorothy’s Seat picnic spot at rocky Tiffin Top, west of the lake, is also popular. From there, you can continue 45 minutes onward through the forest to Land's End. Alternatively, horse rides to these places are offered just west of town on the road to Ramnagar.

Nainital-based Snout Adventures conducts trekking further afield, while the Nainital Mountaineering Club runs rock climbing courses and expeditions for adventure enthusiasts.

To see a memorable sunset, head to Hanuman Garhi temple south of town.

Those who are interested in British-era architecture should go on a tour of Raj Bhawan (Governors House), an immense Victorian Gothic-style building designed to resemble a Scottish castle. The tours depart every hour, with the first one starting at 11 a.m.

The town's market, Bara Bazaar, is the best place to pick up some souvenirs including locally-made candles. Check out Mehrotras House of Wax, the oldest candle shop there. The Pahari Store , which stocks products handmade in the hills, is another fabulous place to shop.

These include the luxurious Naini Retreat (the former summer residence of the Maharaja of Pilibhit), the  Palace Belvedere (which belonged to the erstwhile rajas of Awagarh), Balrampur House , the Grand Hotel on The Mall, the Pavilion Hotel , and Emily Lodge and Cafe .

If you'd prefer a boutique heritage homestay, Abbotsford is recommended. 

Shervani Hilltop is a popular luxury choice that's quietly nestled into the hills above town. 

Conveniently situated lakeside on The Mall, Hotel Alka has a wide range of colonial-style rooms (including a family apartment) from about 4,500 rupees per night. Hotel ChanniRaja and the Classic Hotel are also good options on The Mall.

Most of Nainital's restaurants are located on The Mall. Popular ones include Sakley's Restaurant and Pastry Shop for global cuisine, Zooby's Kitchen for North Indian food, Chandani Chowk for mouthwatering jalebi s and Indian snacks, and Pot & Stones Cafe for Continental cuisine and coffee.

Quaint Cafe Cicha , at the Abbotsford Heritage Homestay, has a relaxing garden setting and serves delicious Continental fare. Weekend cooking classes are conducted there.

For an atmospheric drink, try Stella Bar at the Naini Hotel or the Boat House Club (you'll need to pay for a temporary membership).

Nainital is an excellent base for exploring the lakes and other hill towns in the area. You'll find plenty of tour operators in The Mall who offer excursions. A half-day tour to nearby lakes such as Sat Tal, Bhimtal and Naukuchiatal is a popular option. The forested areas of Kilbury, Vinayak and Kunjakharak are an ideal option for nature lovers. The best and nearest junction for road travel is in Delhi, about 350KM away and you can take NH 9 to reach Nainital from Delhi . Nainital in Uttarakhand is one of the most popular hill stations of India. It is famous for its lake, after which it is named. The town has a population of 41,400 (2011 est.)

Set amidst the towering peaks of the Kumaon Hills, the lake resort of Nainital has a lot to offer. From boating to feeding animals at the zoo; from picnicking on the hills to exploring Jim Corbett's home, Nainital has all that you could hope for in a hill station.

Nainital is set in two parts, Tallital and Mallital, with the lake separating them. Tallital is the southern side of the lake, while Mallital consists of the northern upper reaches. The town was destroyed during the Landslip of 1880, and later rebuilt by the British. It is renowned for its lake, bird's-eye views, and prestigious educational institutions.

Nainital, also known as Lake District of Uttarakhand, is named after the goddess Naina Devi. It is located around Naini Lake in Uttarakhand. If you are planning to feel tourism of Nainital, the best time to visit there in between May to July, the summer time in India.

The weather in Nainital is quite pleasant. Summers are hot and temperatures may reach 32 °C. During winter, temperatures may be sub-zero. The town receives snowfall during December and January.

The nearest railway station is Kathgodam , 35 km away. Taxis charge ₹750-1000 to Nainital, you can also board taxis on sharing basis which would cost ₹150-200 per person. Most hotels will arrange for a pick up on prior request, ₹1000.

You can also walk out of Kathgodam station, the bus station is 100 m away, take a bus to Nainital, its only ₹60 per person.

By road [ edit ]

• There are daily bus services from Delhi . The buses leave from ISBT Anand Vihar in Delhi and are run by Uttarakhand Roadways.
• Driving to Nainital takes 7 to 8 hours from Delhi. The entire drive is on various highways. NH 24 connects Delhi to Rampur via Hapur. At Rampur, turn and head north on NH 87 all the way up to Nainital. En route halts include the Wonderland, Rwy crossing, Moradabad and The Cottage, Jeliokot.

Taxis don't work on a sharing basis and the whole taxi fare from Delhi to Nainital may cost ₹1500-2200.

By plane [ edit ]

Flying into Nainital is the fastest way to reach the hill station. Nainital is served by PantNagar Airport ( PGH  IATA ), located about 2 hours away. It is one of the least busy airports in the country, handling only 6 scheduled flights a week.

Pantnagar is another airport located 70 km away from Nainital. Delhi is nearest international airport which is 280 km and well connected to major cities in India as well as abroad.

Get around [ edit ]

• Nainital is nicely connected with the different towns around the city with buses frequently running.
• There are a few cycle rickshaws in town. Rates are fixed at ₹20 from one end of the mall to the other. They can only pick and drop passengers at the ticket booths of either end.
• However, there is no better way to explore Nainital than on foot. The mall has smooth pavements, making it extremely pedestrian-friendly. During the summer season, entry is denied on the mall from 6 to 9PM, making the road a pedestrian's dream. The town is fairly small and there are some very interesting shops and emporiums in the mall, making the walk a pleasure.
• The months of March, April, May and June starting are best to see the lake’s flora in full bloom and also the perfect time to enjoy a boat ride. Months of November and December are also popular with tourists who want to enjoy fresh snowfall and chilly weather.

This consists of a series of six caves (Tiger, Panther, Porcupine, Bats, Flying Fox and Apes) which get narrower as you progress. People with claustrophobia are advised not to explore the later ones and walk out from the exit available at the end of each cave.  
• Feed the animals at the Nainital Zoo (Gobind Ballabh Pant High Altitude Zoo), where you will find high-altitude species that are native to the region. Zoo entry fee: ₹30 and ₹10 for children ₹25 extra for a camera, closed on Mondays. The zoo also has an interesting sponsorship programme where you can sponsor the maintenance and food of the animal of your choice. The zoo is spread over a wide area and requires lot of walking, so visit only if you are comfortable with that.
• Shopping - There are two main shopping areas, The Mall and Barra Bazaar. Traditional things to buy include shawls, scarves, cardigans and local jams. You can also buy wooden handicrafts which are good and cheap option for souvenirs.
• Trek to Naina/China Peak , the highest point in the region (8,622 ft (2,628 m)). You can get scenic views of the whole region. Hiking there takes around 60 min and is not so strenuous. From September to November, you will be able to see a panoramic view of snow capped Himalayas further north. On the top of the mountain you can find a small tea shop serving bread omelet, some biscuits, tea and coffee for a reasonable price. Not many people go there making it a good option to escape from the buzz.
• Trek to Tiffin's Top . It's a slightly touristy place where you can feel the rush. You can get on a horse to go to the top (₹300-₹1000). The Horse ride is an extremely nice experience, but ensure that ladies travel in front of the male members of the party. Its not so tough to hike there. On the top of this hill, one can find all kinds of shops, flocking with people.

Nightlife in Nainital almost doesn't exist. Simply basking and dancing in front of bonfire is extremely enjoyable. There are hardly any pubs or bars in Mall and alcohol is served only in 5 star hotels which possess decent bars.

While driving your car on uphill, don't hit brakes very hard as the risk of jamming them may arise. Most of the petrol pumps close by 7PM, so keep an eye on your fuel meter and get tank of your car filled in time.

However, it is now the official residence of the Governor of the state of Uttarakhand.

The Raj Bhavan is strategically built around an unusual landscape and is spread over a vast area of ​​205 acres with a golf course spread over 45 acres. The palace complex also has a swimming pool and a garden. This Scottish-looking palace was built in the pre-independence period of 1897 and took two years to complete.
