At Tourism Australia, we believe in developing talent and providing students with the opportunity to obtain valuable practical experience.

The Tourism Australia (Maggie White) Students and Graduates Program  gives Australian university students and graduates who are passionate about tourism and Australia the opportunity to gain valuable insights and skills in the tourism and marketing sector, working within various business units of Tourism Australia.

Our programs provide exceptional training within a fantastic supportive and collaborative environment.

About Maggie White

The program is named after Maggie White – one of Australian tourism’s most passionate advocates who sadly passed away in June 2015. Maggie was a much loved member of the travel industry and the Tourism Australia family, having worked with Tourism Australia and its forerunner, the Australian Tourist Commission (ATC), for close to 25 years.

Student and graduate stories

Tourism Australia’s Cadetship program enables students to take on a part-time role within the organisation whilst completing their degree. Students are then able to gain hands-on experience across various business units, giving them insight into the expectations of the type of work they may wish to gain future employment in.

  • Role:  Indigenous Cadet
  • Degree:  Bachelor of Aviation (Management)
  • University:  University of New South Wales (UNSW)
  • Business Units:  Consumer Marketing, Industry Events and People & Culture, International Operations

Tourism Australia’s cadetship program was a fantastic opportunity I came across online whilst searching for jobs to undertake while studying. This cadetship has allowed me to gain invaluable work experience and industry knowledge whilst completing my degree.

During my first year of interning I was exposed to several aspects of the organisation including campaign work in the Consumer Marketing Team; the largest trade show in the southern hemisphere (ATE) in the Industry Events Team; taking part in career expo stalls in the People & Culture Team and a couple staff committees including the Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) committee and our 2017 staff conference committee. All of these things allowed me to get to know the people in the organisation and also immerse myself in the business side of the tourism industry.

I have been tasked with responsibilities such as researching information that could help with upcoming campaigns, implementing ideas from our RAP, using information systems relevant to the team’s needs, coordinating and publishing booklets for distribution at career expos and organising internal staff activities during NAIDOC Week.

This cadetship program has allowed me to ease my way into the workplace environment and have helped me develop positive working relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. Without a doubt, I would recommend Tourism Australia’s programs to tertiary students because not only is it a great environment to be in but “There’s Nothing like Working at Tourism Australia”.

  • Business Unit(s):  Marketing Strategy, Digital

The cadetship program at Tourism Australia (TA) was recommended to me by a friend. The overall process of obtaining this cadetship was really quite simple. I initially contacted the People & Culture team and after taking part in two interviews, I was successful in securing a cadet role here at TA.

I started my cadetship in the second year of my degree at UNSW and have been placed in the Research team. So far, I have been exposed to a couple of projects that have been launched within the Research team such as the High Value Traveller project and the Consumer Demand Project and I work with a lot of data, because what’s research without the data!

What I like so far at TA is that as a marketing student, I find the whole organisation very interesting and intriguing. I enjoy working at TA and look forward to not only progressing through to other teams but also developing my knowledge in the industry!

If I could give advice to students to obtaining a placement at TA, I would say that you should learn about the organisation before the interview process and know whether you really want to be a part of TA or not, by reading up on their values, goals, mission statement, etc.

Graduate Program

Tourism Australia’s Graduate program gives recent Australian university graduates the opportunity to gain the appropriate skills for the tourism sector, by working full-time within various business units of the organisation. It is typically a two-year contract designed to help graduates in their transition from university to the corporate world.

  • Role:  IT Graduate
  • Degree:  Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science
  • University:  University of Sydney
  • Business Unit(s):  Corporate Services, Information Technology

I came across the TA Graduate program in an online job search website. As a recent graduate, I’ve wanted to try out new experiences that allow me to learn and also work. During the placement process I was a bit nervous at the time especially when I was being interviewed by people who would ultimately be my managers. However, they eased me in during the placement and later revealed to be friendlier than I expected.

Currently, I’m working as an IT graduate in Service Desk. As an IT Graduate, my job goes twofold. First is to understand and learn from my peers from a wide range of IT fields. Another is to apply what I've learnt to the workplace. These could range from onsite technical support, setting up new computers for new users and keeping the system up and running.

What I like about my role at TA are the challenges that are thrown at me every day, both in fun and exciting ways. An example is, one day the mailing servers were down, and I'm trying to assure people that we're looking into it. The next day I'm at a staff conference trying to absorb what's going on. There is no such thing as a dreary day at TA!

My advice for students applying for a role at TA is to stay genuine, calm and controlled during the placement process. Have a read of the TA values and apply it to the placement process. Think of what you can bring not only to your position but to Tourism Australia. These can range from the things you've learnt, skills that you’ve acquired and attitudes that matches with the TA way. Ultimately, we're a fun, positive and innovative company with a friendly attitude to boot!

  • University:  University of South Australia, Arnhem University (Netherlands), University of Malaya (Malaysia)
  • Business Unit(s):  Consumer Marketing

I first heard of the Maggie White Graduate program after I met the former head of Global PR for Tourism Australia when I was living in Malaysia. As an aspiring marketing professional, I always believed it was important to be passionate about the product that you are in the job to sell - The thought of selling Australia was second to none.

The marketing graduate program allows you to rotate into different teams to experience various parts of the business. I am currently eight months in to my second TA placement with Global PR and Advocacy. Previously, I spent seven months in Digital Marketing and my next rotation will be with the Creative Campaigns team.

My tasks in PR include supporting and managing our Friends of Australia Advocacy Program as well as establishing and maintaining influencer relationships to support our campaigns globally. Alongside these talented storytellers, I develop key messaging and story angles to support Australia’s brand through media distribution channels in our international markets. I am also member of the United Taskforce and the Social Club (responsible for planning all things social at TA).

The best thing about working at TA are the people we work with, both in the organisation and the broader tourism industry. From contributing to new campaigns, to planning exciting events – there’s always something to be excited about at TA. The culture at TA is to challenge the norm, take risks and learn from failures. Day one on the job was the launch of our Super Bowl Campaign and the excitement hasn’t stopped since.

Big, bold and colourful, Australia is utterly unique. From the outback to the coast, to the icons and the undiscovered, each destination has its own charm and character. Food, wine, nature, beaches, wildlife and genuinely friendly people - It’s a pretty good gig selling Australia to the world.

My advice for any aspiring Tourism Australia graduates is to be passionate. Your passion – for your field of work, for the things you love, and for Australia - is what I believe will be your biggest drawcard in securing a position at TA.

The common catch 22 of university graduates: you need experience to get a job. But you need a job to get experience.

On top of this, you want life-changing experiences while exploring the world – not the average 9-5.

But this is an important stage in your career. If you don’t start working now, you could be left behind in the job market.

One way to work around this common conundrum is with an internship abroad.

You can gain real life experience by living abroad without sacrificing career progress.

Can you imagine your life in Australia? You’re fully embracing the Australian way of life. Which means working hard so you can play just as hard. If hitting the hottest bars on the weekend isn’t your thing, Australia has an impressive range of outdoor activities to keep you entertained.

Besides, you’re working in tourism. So all the epic adventures and side quests you complete on the weekends are basically research for work.

Seeing what the job involves on a day to day basis has helped you refine your career path, too. Australia takes tourism seriously. They take pride in showing off their unique natural beauty, diverse wildlife, and cultural heritage.

Which means you’re learning from some of the best minds in tourism while learning Australia’s way of excelling at tourism.

You're making connections and learning the ropes. It’s all about who you know, so the connections you’re making now could open lucrative doors for you later on in your career.

Which means a hospitality & tourism internship in Australia will float your resume to the top of the pile and give you the confidence you need to smash your career.

It’s your secret weapon that’ll take you from student to professional with ease.

So when you start your first real job in your industry, you’ll hit the ground running with all the experience you racked up abroad.

On top of this, you’re in a foreign country that’s begging to be explored! Weekends off are filled with bucket-list experiences as you go on adventures with your new friends. Australia is the island paradise of your dreams. And on this trip, you get to call Australia home.

And when you book with Global, you book with the best. You get all of this without all the hassle. Your internship is confirmed before you leave and our team will help you find accommodation, too.

Plus, world-class support for the duration of your trip, and all the extras.

Being an intern abroad is a perfect way to kickstart your career while gaining life experience by living in a foreign country.

Going from a student to a professional can be tricky. Especially when more and more employers are looking for experience in the university graduates they hire.

Luckily, many of these same employers see internship programs as a vital step for new hires to gain this experience before they enter the workplace.

Which means an internship is the perfect transition from student to professional.

Watch your confidence soar as you learn the ins and outs of your industry with your personal mentor showing you the way.

Spruce up your resume with international experience for better job opportunities when the time comes. Solid internship experience might help you negotiate a better salary, too.

On this trip you’ll be completing a hospitality & tourism internship in Australia. You’ll learn all about how Australia approaches the unique challenges and landscape of the tourism industry today.

Once you’re done you’ll receive a certificate of completion, a reference letter from your host company, and the opportunity to score academic credit to help with your studies.

You get all of this while living overseas and experiencing the best of a foreign country.

Embark on your next adventure with confidence and ease. Join us and discover the world in a meaningful way!

While we would love to include flights and insurance in our trip packages, it is not feasible to have a fixed price due to the diverse destinations, trip durations, and individual coverage needs of our travellers from around the globe. However, once you register for the trip, we will assign you a dedicated Travel Concierge. They will work closely with you to arrange the ideal flights and insurance tailored to your specific adventure. Rest assured, our team is here to ensure you have a smooth and hassle-free travel experience from start to finish!

The internships are unpaid, however, the experience you gain during the placement is invaluable. You will have the opportunity to develop hands-on skills relevant to your field of interest, enhance your resume, and often receive a strong professional reference, which will prove to be highly beneficial for your future career!

Upon arrival (or at any point during your trip), you will be provided with four nights of hostel accommodation as part of your inclusions. Our in-country partner will assist you in finding a comfortable and affordable place to stay near your host organisation for the duration of your internship.

While some trips require you to be currently studying or have relevant experience in the field, many do not! We consider a wide range of non-academic factors as well. We encourage absolutely anyone and everyone to register, and we will do everything we can to find you the perfect placement.

Most of our interns opt for a 8-12 week placement. This timeframe allows interns to gain significant experience, develop valuable skills, and make the most out of their internship opportunity. It strikes a balance between ensuring a meaningful experience and providing ample time for professional growth. However, we understand that individual circumstances may vary, so we offer flexibility in program durations to accommodate different availability and goals.

Absolutely! Every intern who successfully completes their placement will be awarded a certificate of completion. This valuable certificate serves as a noteworthy addition to your professional portfolio, showcasing your dedication and achievement during your internship experience.

After the last unexpected disruption to travel caused by the..c word..people are now more eager than ever to venture out and explore the world, determined not to miss out on any experiences. Global Work & Travel works on a first-in-best-dressed basis. Booking earlier ensures that you don’t miss out on the best intake, season, placements and more! We recommend our travellers take 6-12+ months to plan their trip for a reason - to make sure you’ve got everything organised perfectly, stress-free. As a Global Traveller you’ll get exclusive access to gWorld, our personalised app where you can keep all of your important documents and trip details in one spot and gain insider access to everything Global. This is where you will find exclusive Marketplace Deals, a unique social network to connect you with other like-minded Global Travellers, access to our Academy with an ever-growing range of skills & languages, and so much more. Think all of your favourite apps merged into one, but like, better? Why not give yourself something to look forward to by booking that trip!

Yes you can! Simply tell your Trip Coordinator after booking that your friend is also going and they can link your profiles. For most of our trips we should be able to have you and your friends placed together or nearby. Meaning that you can live, work, play & travel together! But wait there's more! Not only can you travel the world with your besties at your side, you can also earn some extra cash towards your own trip just by referring your friends to Global Work & Travel. You can learn more about the great referral rewards program inside your gWorld account once you join. And for those who decide to go-it-solo, we’ve made it easier to meet other Global Travellers in the same region as you. Just like any other social platform, you’ll be able to interact, share, chat and meet with some really cool people who are doing trips just like you!

At Global Work & Travel, we share a deep love for animals and fully understand the special bond you have with your pet. We recognise the challenges of embarking on a trip without them. Due to travel restrictions, requirements, and limited pet-friendly accommodations among our host organisations, we regretfully cannot facilitate their inclusion in the journey. However, many of our customers choose to entrust their pets to a family member or friend, embark on their adventure, and return home to wagging tails and furry cuddles.

We know that life can get in the way of travel, so all our trips come with a great deal of flexibility. In most cases, if you cannot travel on your selected date, you can place your trip on hold to deal with whatever is holding you back, and continue in the future without incurring any penalty. You may also have the option of transferring to an entirely different trip and destination as well, or even transferring your trip to a friend or family member. In the event that you need to outright cancel your trip, if you give us 84* days notice you can do so with only a 50% cancellation fee. Your refund of the balance will come in the form of a Store Credit which you can put toward any other trip that we offer, including tours through third-party providers, as well as holidays through DealsAway.com, and is valid for 2 years from date of issue. As international travel can be complex, your options are based on the progress of your trip organisation and our support team can assist you in finding the best solution for your needs.

A Guide to Internships Abroad in Australia

Explore down under in the most fulfilling and profitable way through internships in Australia. Have the chance to gain professional experience in your field while working and living along the scenic coastline of Australia. When interning in this picturesque environment, you will shortly learn why the people of Australia are some of the happiest people in the world. Not only is Australia filled with natural attractions, like the Great Barrier Reef, the Outback, and their world famous wine country, but Australia’s prominence arts and international business make this a perfect location to intern abroad.

Best Cities

Sydney , the nation’s largest city, is an excellent choice for internships abroad in just about every industry, because of its size and international popularity. Ranked in the top fifteen cities for tourism in the past fourteen years, tourism and hospitality are top industries for internships in Sydney. The Sydney Opera House is a major component to international tourism and also reflects and contributes to the national theatre, art, and music culture.

Just north along the eastern coast resides the city of Brisbane . The city’s economy is growing faster than any other Australian city, making economics an excellent field for internships in Brisbane. Brisbane is home to many top universities, such as the University of Queensland and Queensland University of Technology. Both of these schools specialize in research and technology, providing opportunities for lab and research internships in Brisbane too.

Residing on the southeastern edge of the country lies the city of Melbourne . Interning in Melbourne with a professor in any field at the University of Melbourne would certainly stand out on your resume to any future employer. Melbourne is the birthplace of Australian film and television and continues to be the home to international film festivals, so Melbourne is therefore an ideal Australian internship location for anyone looking to get into the film and media industry.

Popular Fields/Sectors

Australia possesses a very rich art culture that draws people from all over the world. Film is by far the most popular area of interest, therefore creating a high demand for film production. Interning in Australia in the fields of film and media will expose you to a thriving art scene that will open up countless networking opportunities.

The fashion industry is also a big part of the art culture in Australia, which creates many opportunities for internships in graphic design . Australia is also very popular for action and extreme sports, which demand sponsorships from companies whose sole purpose is to create eye catching designs and trendy fashion. With such a progressive art culture in Australia, there’s a need to sell the entertainment available. As such, marketing is another popular area for interning in Australia. Finally, Australia’s wide range of ecosystems, geological processes, and biodiversity, make it an ideal location for internships in environmental protection or biology.

Internships in Australia vary in terms of the length and amount of work, but typically programs last between eight and twelve weeks. Professional experience is usually not required, but some internships in Australia will require one to two years of relevant university course work.

Anticipated Costs

As a popular tourist destination, Australia tends to lean towards the pricier side when it comes to cost of living. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant can cost around $15 and the cost of a pair of jeans can be over $100. Fortunately, there are ways to save on living expenses to avoid these steep costs. Most internship programs in Australia include living accommodations in contracts or program fees, when applicable. As a very health conscious country, Australia offers some of the best locally grown organic foods. Look into fundraising or check out our scholarship directory if cost is of concern to you!

Accommodations & Visas

The most common housing arrangements for individuals who intern in Australia are shared apartments, hotels, homestays, or a room in a dorm/youth hostel. Most internship programs include housing within the program fee. Since the majority of internship opportunities in Australia are located in the larger cities, and living arrangements in downtown areas can be scarce and expensive, you may find yourself living in the outskirts of a major city. Although, you should not have to commute much more than 30 minutes to your internship in Australia.

It’s common for internships to provide assistance with acquiring a visa. If you’re not already in possession of an Australian student visa, then you will have to apply for a special program visa online. To qualify for this visa you must be 18 years old, demonstrate intermediate to fluent abilities in English, and provide proof of sufficient financial support and health insurance coverage, which many internships will provide. A special program visa is valid up to six months, though recipients cannot receive pay for their internship work under the special program visa (or work part-time). If you plan on working for pay while interning in Australia, you must apply for a work visa through your employer. Check out our Embassy Directory for more information.

GoAbroad's Inside Scoop

Diversity. Since Sydney is such a popular tourist and study abroad destination, you will be exposed to international diversity that will greatly enhance your chances for employment abroad.

So whether you are cliff diving off of the rocky edges of the Australian coast, relaxing on the beach, or just developing your professional career, you are sure to have the time of your life interning in Australia.

Language. Of course, it is a bit easier to intern abroad when communicating all in your own language, and English is the national language in Australia. Although, it may take a little time to understand a few unique ways of saying things as a foreign intern in Australia.

Hospitality Internships in Australia with Nomads

What people are saying….

Doing an internship with Nomads for a semester I got a 360º experience in the adventure tourism industry. I worked for both Nomads Network and all three Nomads properties in Melbourne and my tasks ranged from marketing to back-office and administrative tasks to on-the-floor hostel activities. What I loved about Nomads was its open and supportive culture, way to be creative and innovate their business process, and well – truth be said, it’s just a rad and fun company to work for! At the end of the day I loved it so much I stayed another semester to write my bachelor thesis as a graduation assignment for Nomads. Would do it again in a heartbeat. Jill Smith

_AUS (1)

Over this past summer, I interned in Sydney, Australia. This experience has changed my life, I was able to make friends all over the world, understand how I react in certain situations, pushed my limits, able to get creative and gain real-world experience in my field of study. TEAN does an amazing job of personalizing everyone's trip abroad. They have employees working in the host cities to help with anything you may need. I had the summer of my life and I HIGHLY encourage others to take the leap and intern abroad.

Rottnest Island (or Wadjemup in local Noongar language) is an island 19 km off the coast of Perth. A perfect oasis for beachgoers and ocean explorers, those who enjoy a bit of sport and adventure (you can golf on Rotto, bike around the entire island, or go skydiving!) and, of course, home to the world’s smiliest animal: the quokka! Only a 30-minute ferry away from Fremantle, Rotto is a great day trip option or weekend away for anyone keen to camp out under the stars for a few nights. West Aussies love Rotto for the stunning views, the break from the city hustle and bustle, and again, those darn cute quokkas!
