Tourism Sarnia-Lambton promote shopping local with gift cards

Article content.

Tourism Sarnia-Lambton is hoping to encourage holiday shoppers to support local business owners by offering $10, $20 and $50 gift cards that can be redeemed at over 275 businesses across Lambton County.

Following the agency’s successful Discover Sarnia Lambton travel rewards program, Tourism Sarnia-Lambton is encouraging residents and companies who normally buy gift cards to purchase Discover Sarnia-Lambton gift cards this holiday season, to support the restaurant, retail, attraction and accommodation tourism sectors in Lambton County.

“The Tourism Sarnia-Lambton – Discover Sarnia-Lambton travel rewards program has been recognized as one of the most extensive tourism industry support programs in Ontario and throughout Canada over the past 4 months,” said Tourism Sarnia-Lambton executive director Mark Perrin. “The Discover Sarnia-Lambton gift card program follows up our programming to continue supporting local businesses this Christmas and holiday season, and then throughout 2021, when we know our local small businesses will need our support more than ever.”

“It truly is the ultimate gift card to discover Sarnia-Lambton, shop local and support our Lambton County businesses,” he added.

“Supporting our local small businesses is essential as they recover from the effects of COVID-19,” added Ontario’s Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries Lisa MacLeod in a statement. “Tourism is a $36 Billion industry that fuels every community in Ontario and right now we need to support hyper-local tourism initiatives which is why I applaud Tourism Sarnia-Lambton for their efforts to partner with over 275 tourism partners as they continue to encourage hyper-local tourism in Lambton County.”

Gift cards are available for purchase by contacting Tourism Sarnia-Lambton at 1-800-265-0316, 519-336-3232, [email protected] or visiting their 1455 Venetian Blvd. Point Edward headquarters.

Tourism Sarnia-Lambton celebrating Twelve Days of Christmas Giveaways

Article content.

Tourism Sarnia-Lambton is offering an incentive to share news about businesses and attractions in the community in the days leading up to Christmas.

The local tourism marketing agency is offering local gift-package prizes through its Twelve Days of Christmas Giveaways on its Facebook and Instagram pages.

Tourism Sarnia-Lambton celebrating Twelve Days of Christmas Giveaways Back to video

New packages are released every two days featuring specialty goods, dinner packages, event tickets, day tours and weekend getaway packages, as well as the agency’s own Discovery Sarnia-Lambton gift cards.

The winner of each package is selected from individuals who share, like or comment on the social media posts where they are featured.

The promotion began Dec. 1 and continues through Dec. 24.

“So far, it’s a great response,” said Mark Perrin, Tourism Sarnia-Lambton’s executive director. “After the first two days, we’ve had over 10,000 views on the posts so it’s definitely something people are looking for, and it’s a great way for people to learn a little more about our local businesses.”

The agency funded by Lambton County has been working to promote local tourism businesses and attractions hit hard by public-health restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Overall, some of the restaurants are starting to bounce back and doing all right now that they can do in-person dining,” Perrin said.

But it can still be a challenge for some other businesses relying on tourism.

“Reopening doesn’t mean recovery,” Perrin said. “There’s still a lot of businesses that have gone into debt to stay afloat and are trying to bounce back, pay off some of those loans and keep moving forward.”

Christmas is a “key time of year,” particularly for retail sales, and “we really want to focus in on some of those retail and accommodation partners to ensure they keep going and get a piece of the pie this winter,” he said.

It’s hoped the gift packages will spur local residents, as well as those in neighbouring counties, to consider planning visits to businesses and attractions, even if they aren’t one of the winners, Perrin said.

“The program is about creating awareness,” he said.

It also includes a Sarnia-Lambton Holiday Shopping Spotlight video series on the social media sites promoting local businesses and attractions.

The agency recently said it’s extending through 2022 the local gift card program it launched during the pandemic that has sold $250,000 worth of the cards redeemable at area businesses.

“We’ve had a lot of local business step up” and buy gift cards for their employees as holiday gifts, Perrin said.

“That’s something we want to keep on pushing,” he said. “The economic impact it generates is significant.”

Perrin said the agency has been watching the impact of changes at the border but so far hasn’t seen a significant return of U.S. visitors.

“Right now, the biggest thing we’re seeing is that the number of Americans who are fully vaccinated isn’t as high as we had hoped,” he said. “We have people that would like to cross the border” but aren’t currently able to because of the vaccination requirements.

He said the agency plans to work on a campaign aimed at those visitors in 2022.

“It kind of brings us back to when the passport” requirements came into force at the border several years ago and impacted the number of U.S. tourists visiting the area, Perrin said.

“Hopefully we can get back to having waves of Americans coming over again, whether it’s for a vacation or on a day trip,” he said. “We haven’t seen it yet but we’re hoping for 2022.”

Approximately 1,500 donors give annually to enhance a wide array of County programs and services, making the County of Lambton a better place for residents and visitors alike. Once again this year, in lieu of an in-person recognition ceremony, the Warden sent individual thank you messages to some of our very generous donors. To learn more about these donations and to see the messages, visit lambtononline.ca/donors .

Noelle’s Gift supports OSNP – Lambton

Earlier this month, Noelle’s Gift donated $23,511 to the Ontario Student Nutrition Program-Lambton (OSNP-Lambton). This funding will be shared amongst 39 Student Nutrition Programs in the County of Lambton to support the cost of healthy food for students in need. The program serves approximately 8,100 students each day.

Nutrition programs support healthy nutritional environments in schools, and increase the consumption of fruits and vegetables by children and youth to better prepare kids for a full day of learning.

The Student Nutrition Program receives provincially based funding from the Ontario Student Nutrition Program of 12 cents per student per day. On average it costs $1 per student per day to provide a healthy snack, making it necessary for schools to fundraise for the remaining money to cover the existing funding gap. Since 2013, Noelle’s Gift has provided over $188,000 to the Student Nutrition Program for the purchase of healthy food, reducing the funding gap and fundraising burden on schools with each donation.

Thank you Noelle’s Gift for your ongoing support of the Ontario Student Nutrition Program – Lambton!

Canatara Cabin Fundraising – Matching Fund Campaign

We are pleased to announce that an anonymous donor has generously contributed $3,000 to the Canatara Cabin Restoration Project. The donation was conditional on receiving matching funds. We are thrilled to share that Ron van Horne and Scott Ferguson have committed to exceeding that donation with $5,000.

This autumn the Oil Museum of Canada is proud to present two virtual programs for group bookings.

Adult and Senior Live Sessions

Age does not limit the thirst for knowledge, new experiences, or lively conversations!

The Oil Museum of Canada, National Historic Sites has created virtual programs that offer presentations to different segments of society including adults and seniors. These Live Sessions invite a museum expert into your virtual group to present a program and provoke discussion with participants.

A Driller's Holiday Live Session

Looking for a virtual program about how the winter holidays were celebrated in the 1800s of central Lambton? The Oil Museum of Canada is proud to present “A Driller’s Holiday”.

We explore different holiday traditions celebrated by early settlers of the region, such as putting up a tree in the home, making candles, gift giving, and festive drinks. We also take a close look at how relatives in countries overseas working on oil fields communicated back home about the holiday traditions they encountered around the world. Extension activities and videos are available as an asynchronous program to teachers and educators to extend learning opportunities.

For more information on these programs and to complete the Live Sessions booking form, visit oilmuseum.ca .

Lambton Heritage Museum is offering a new virtual Live Session school program just in time for the holidays.

Based on our beloved in-person program, Virtual Holidays @ Heritage will explore festive traditions of gift-giving, food and drink, decorations, and more. Students will learn how people celebrated the holidays in Lambton long ago and make comparisons between then and now.

This program is free and is recommended for grades 1-4. It will be offered on Mondays and Tuesdays from November 15 to December 14. Book your Live Session today or email Colleen Inglis at [email protected] for more information.

Additional virtual Live Session programs are available for booking on Mondays and Tuesdays through January 2022.
