Adimali - the only big town before Munnar

Adimali though only around 40 kilometers away from our destination, Eravikulam, doesn’t carry the air of a hill station. The only big town before Munnar, travelers often spend some time in the shops here. You will definitely catch the telltale aroma of spices hanging in the air. A detour to Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls can be made from Adimali. 

Cheeyappara is a charming waterfall that cascades down in seven steps especially in monsoon. Valara located between Adimali and Neriyamangalam is only 14 kilometers from the town on the Deviyar river. It is a chain of waterfalls set amidst lush green forest.

Patches of the long road to Munnar from Adimali were once elephant corridors. When the original road built by the British has swept away in a flood that came at the beginning of the last century, the authorities had to start from the scratch. They traced an abandoned path of the elephants and widened it to make it motorable. As you climb on, what first strikes you is the sudden dip in temperature; the cold sometimes stings you unalarmed as you take yet another sharp turn in the road. The journey uphill is all excited as you learn that you move through a vast jungle. Peer into the woods on the margin if you are not the one driving. The chance of spotting an animal is big... Sometimes you have to wait in a line of traffic patiently for a herd of elephants to cross the road. This is still their world. The fog now begins to hoodwink the eyes, sometimes leading you through a thin black corridor of a road bordered with thick wads of white fog. There are times when even road before you disappears. Wind down the side glass, inhale the crisp mountain air sharp with the aroma of spices. Soon, vistas will open up on either side, you find yourself moving through a bed of tea plants, shimmering in the morning sun.  Munnar is still a few kilometers away somewhere on top of these hills but the cold breezes that waft in bring you a vague idea of a weather waiting at the top. Munnar plays an important part in the history of the state. It was Duke Wellesley and his men who were the first to discover the splendor of the place. They came not as travelers, but as soldiers to capture Tipu Sultan in the 18th century. Though Tipu gave them a miss, and fails to turn up as a prey to their ambush in the high ranges, Wellesley was not upset with his failed plan. The place where he had explored from Tamilnadu had already bowled him over. Ever since, travelers, merchants, businessmen from different parts of the Continent began to come and find in Munnar the homeland they had left in Europe. The climate was a perfect throwback to the one at home. The English began to build companies, churches, and bungalows after the fashion of European architecture, especially the English style. The High range Club in the town and the CSI church in Old Munnar are some of the buildings that speak volumes about the time when the whites frequented the place. The estate bungalows not only carry the legacy of its architecture, some of them still wear on their sleeves, the British customs and practices. A stroll through one of the tea estates will take you back through time.

Tata Tea Museum

If you are lucky enough to make it during the show timings, you will learn a lot that day. From the early history of Tea Plantation to how British brought Tea culture and cultivation in the region, the toil and hard work of the people who endured during those days, the machineries and tools, the entire process of cultivating, plucking, drying and final packaging of Tea; almost everything you learn in just a half an hour documentary that is played here.  You will also get to see the typewriters, magneto phone, the hand tea roller, and manual calculators and iron oven which have been very useful tools during the earlier days. This is one of the best tourist places in Munnar. Eravikulam National Park

Eravikulam National Park is located at a drive of 45 minutes from the City Centre of Munnar and is situated atop a summit of Western Ghats. Spread around a land stretch of 97 kilometers, this is one of the most sought place  for Munnar sightseeing. It houses a plethora of flora and fauna and accounts itself amidst the other UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Managed initially as a Game Reserve, Eravikulam National Park is also known as the Rajamalai Wildlife Sanctuary. Eravikulam National Park is a massive blend of wildlife. There are around 132 different species of birds, 19 amphibian species, 26 mammalian species, 101 species of butterflies, and 20 different orchid species here. Nilgiri langur, Atlas moth, Nilgiri marten, small-clawed otter, Lion-tailed macaque, and a rare variety of the leopard and lion are some of the chief wildlife to be spotted here. Marayoor dolmens.

This interesting place has 15 different types of Dolmens belonging to Neolithic age and some of which belongs to the Iron age which make this place best for Munnar sightseeing. These prehistoric dolmens are situated around 55 km from Munnar and are worth taking a long trip to reach and witness the remnants of Dolmenoid cists which date back to the Megalithic age. One has to trek through Muniyara to see these magnificent burial chamber designed with four stones placed by the edges together and then covered by granite slabs which belong to different ages. Chinnakanal Waterfalls

Drive 20 KM on the NH leading to Thekkady and you will spot this tempting waterfall right on the side of the road. The source being River Devikulam and the waterfall is surrounded by lush greenery. One can take snaps, bath, enjoy the fall and sit there for hours; you just can laze around the fall as much as you want.

During the monsoon season, it appears like gallons of milk are being thrown from a height and it becomes a little tricky to bath under it, however, it still can be done. Chokramudi Peak

This isolated elevated piece of a hill is a site that hooks you for hours. Chokramudi is situated at 7,200 ft above sea level in the Eravikulam National Park. It is short and easy trek which can be done in a day and since it comes under the national forest it is masked by lush green Shola forest.  Pothamedu is the trek base which is situated an hour drive from Munnar and the trek can be of 4 to 5 hours covering a distance of 10 KM upwards. Mattupetti Indo Swiss Farm

Mattupetti Dairy farm, also known as Indo-Swiss farm is a dairy farm started under the Indo-Swiss project in Kerala. Lakkom Water Falls

This waterfall is part of the Eravikulam National Park and falls on the route to Udumalaipettai from Munnar. It originates from the Eravikulam stream at around 30 km off Munnar. Travel through the thick tea plantation on a narrow winding trail and witness this silky white magic of nature. In the clear water of the pool below, you can even see your toe twiddling on the rocks. The water takes a plunge out of a thick green forest from afar and the sight of this small yet charming waterfall is spellbinding. The most sought-after destination in Munnar is Anamudi peak (8842 ft), the highest peak of South India. Around 15 KM from Munnar lies Rhodovalley which is famous for the blooming Rhodendron trees and there sits the peak of Meesapulimala at an elevation of 8000 ft above sea level. The peak shares the border of Kerala and Tamilnadu and is a moderate trek of one day that goes through passing eight hills to reach the top.

Lockhart Gap

Refreshing, picturesque and serene; Lock hart Gap is the landscape where floating mist is found on the blue layers of hills which can be seen from this spot in Munnar. Lockhart Gap is located at around 12 to 13 km from Munnar on the way to Mattupetti.  The expansive panorama of green tea slopes, the streaks of white cotton mist and the ultra blue skyline made of mist-clad hills and the sharp winding mountain roads; the place is remarkably special if you want to spend an hour of solitude in this cave quiet valley.  The name is referred to a gap between two mountains which looks like the shape of a heart which can be witnessed from this vantage point. Rose Garden

The aromatic floating fumes of a plethora of plant species, fruits, flowers and crops in a 2acre stretch, brimming with varied colors on a 360-degree pan is a place that only lies in Munnar. One of the perfect Munnar tourist places which you just cannot afford to miss while you are in Munnar.  This is actually a maze of a number of pretty flowers like Dahlias, Rose, Chrysanthemums, and plants like pepper, cardamom, vanilla etc at a height of 3500 feet above the sea level. Sevenmallay Tea Estate

This clean, well maintained and highly quiet British era church utters history in every brick of its wall. This old church is loved by the visitors for the tranquillity which they find while visiting C.S.I Christ church on a small hillock in Munnar. The stained glass windows, the gothic style architecture, the granite floors, and the brass plaques; all of these make the church look like a link that connects the past to the present.  It was built in the year 1910 by British missionaries and since then it is worship house for the believers. This is one of the best Munnar tourist places that is well maintained, clean and very charming. High Range Club

Located almost 2000m above sea level, the waterfalls is surrounded by the spell-binding charm of tea plantations, magnificent hills and trees. Valara Falls

Wedged between Neriamangalam and Adimali, Valara falls is one of the gorgeous waterfalls in Munnar which is located at a distance of around 12 km from the city center on the Kochi-Munnar highway. For a wild encounter in the jungle trek to this stunning waterfall and get clicked against this cascading background.  Deviyar River is the source of many waterfalls in the region some of which is Valara falls and Cheeyapara falls. However, you cannot access the waterfall; one has to view it from the roadside as it is even visible from the NH. The thick forest cover and the slanting rocky slopes of the hills create a canvas of beauty together and are one of the few places to visit in Munnar which can add some awe-striking pictures to your Munnar diary. It is suggested that you take a tour of this waterfall on your return trip from Munnar as it will fall on the same side of the road. Location: NH 49, Chillithodu, Kerala 685561 Timings: All day. Anayirankal Dam

Ranked amongst the top scenic places to visit in Munnar, Anayirankal Dam is an ideal picnic spot for travellers and locals alike. Almost 22km away from Munnar, the dam is located amidst tea plantations and dense green forests. The word Anayirankal is a mix of two words, ‘Aana’ meaning ‘elephants’ and ‘irankal’ meaning ‘coming down’. The name ‘Anayirankal Dam’ denotes the dam where elephants come down to drink water. If you’re lucky you might just spot herds of elephants from nearby forests coming down to the lake for some water. You can spend time boating or at the café/food court inside the park.    Location: Anayirankal, Kerala 685613. Timings: All day. Entry free: Adult – INR 20 | Child – INR 10

Rock Cave (Malayil Kallan Guha)

On the way to Thekaddy, after around 13 to 14 KM from Munnar you will spot a Board opposite to a cave entrance right on the NH and the board reads a very interesting story about the Rock cave, also known as Malayil Kallan Guha where Malayil is said to the one who leaves on the mountain or rock, Kallan is a thief and Guha means a cave in Malayalam; which together tells the story of the thief who lived in the cave and robbed people taking a journey on this road, in earlier days. 

It is just opposite to the Lockhart Gap which provides some breathtaking vistas of the entire town, soaked in fumes of clouds and mist. This is one of the Munnar tourist places which is a good spot to stop your car and take a short break.

Thirumeni Cultural Centre

Thirumeni Cultural Centre bestows you the chance of spending an evening in the beautiful set up of green hills, aromatic tea plains, misty skyline accompanied with goose bumping performances of Kalarippayattu and Kathakali, the two very famous and respected art forms of Kerala.  You can also head to the make-up room to see the artists getting ready and ask questions if you have any of the Kathakali artists. In the one hour duration, the performance gives an overview of Kathakali art form. Chithirapuram

Located 10 km away from Munnar city, Chithirapuram is a charming hill-side village that is amongst the top Munnar tourist places. Home to many palaces, tea gardens and lush green valleys, witness picturesque colonial heritage and old town charm here. For those looking for peace and tranquillity, this place offers just that. Chithirapuram is a famous spot amongst tourists interested in outdoor activities such as paragliding, hiking, trekking, boating, parasailing, mountaineering, etc. Many also visit Chithirapuram to access nearby attractions like Muthuapetty Reservoir, Eravikulam National Park, Elephant Dam & Lake, Mattupetty Dam, Marayoor forests, Thoovanam waterfalls and Echo Point. Munnar Floriculture Centre, also known as Munnar Rose Garden is one of the top places to visit in Munnar. Floriculture Centre is home to hundreds of rare varieties of flowers and other plants including cacti, herbs, shrubs, and creepers. Operated by the Kerala Forest Development Centre, it is spread across acres of land in the city of Munnar. Located close to other main attractions, you can visit the place in under 30 minutes. The amenities inside the garden include toilets, café and other shops. With many tea plantations in the background, this spot is the perfect place for a quick photo-op! At a distance of 39 Kms from Munnar, the magnificent Valara Waterfalls is located between Adimali and Neriamangalam on Munnar to Kochi highway (NH49), near Cheeyappara Waterfalls. Valara features a chain of waterfalls falling from a height of about 1000 feet and provide a magnificent view. These waterfalls are surrounded by lush, dense forests that are home to a variety of animals and birds. It is one of the top waterfalls near Munnar. Though the falls are visible from highway, it demands good amount of trekking to reach the bottom of the falls. The surrounding places of the Valara Falls are good for trekking. The falls offer spectacular views in monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. This place is connected by buses running between Munnar and Kochi.

The Most Beautiful Stations on the Moscow Metro

You might have heard that there are some beautiful metro stations in Moscow. Soviet decorations, chandeliers, mosaic painting and statues are common in many of the stations. The good news is that the Moscow Metro does not cost a lot of money and many of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro are on the same line, so you can almost get on and off at each station to visit these. Over the New Year holidays, I had a free afternoon and decided to visit some of these stations. Check out what I found below…..

The main stations that you will want to visit are on the Number 5 line, also known as the Circle Line. An advantage of this line is that you can get to it very easily and quickly no matter where you are in Moscow. The announcements on the metro are in Russian as well as English so you don’t need to worry if your Russian language skills are not good.

If, like me, you arrive in Moscow via train from Kyiv , then you will arrive at a metro station which many Muscovites believe to be the most beautiful of them all…..

Kievskaya metro station was opened in 1954 and features white marble walls which curve upwards and have with large mosaics surrounded by a gold trim in a very classical style. The mosaics depict life in Ukraine and was designed by a Ukrainian who wanted to display Ukraine’s influence and contribution to Soviet Russia.

Belorusskaya

If you look at a map of the metro , you will want to go in a clockwise direction on the circle line. So you will want to get on the train going in the Barrikadnaya direction and not Park Kultury. Stay on this line until you reach the 2nd station, Belorusskaya. This station was built in 1952 and like Kievskaya also features white marble pylons and a plaster ceiling.

The ceiling features 12 mosaics in an octagonal shape depicting Belarusian life, while the tiling on the floor is said to resemble a Belarusian quilt. One of the passageway exits of the station has a statue called ‘Belarusian Partisans’ of three men wearing long coats, holding guns and carrying a flag.”

Mayakovskaya

To get to the next station, we need to change onto the green line (line 2) and go just one stop to the station of Mayakovskaya. This station has an art deco theme and, for some, resembles an elaborate ballroom. The columns are faced with stainless steel and pink rhodonite while the marble walls and ceiling have 34 mosaics with the theme “24-hour Soviet Sky. Apparently, Stalin resided here during the 2nd World War as the station was used as a command post for Moscow’s anti-aircraft regiment.

Novoslobodskaya

It’s time to get back on the metro and return to Belorusskaya. At Belorusskaya, change to the circle line again and continue clockwise to the next station, Novoslobodskaya. With its 32 stained glass panels, this station reminds me of a church. The panels were designed by Latvian artists and are surrounded by a brass border.

Prospekt Mira

Back on the metro and again just one stop until our next station, Prospekt Mira. This station was originally called Botanichesky Sad after the nearby Botanical Gardens of the Moscow State University. The pylons are covered in white marble and decorated with floral bas-relief friezes. The ceiling is decorated with casts and several cylindrical chandeliers.

Komsomolskaya

On the metro once more and once more we are going just one stop to the next station – Komsomolskaya. This station is famous for its its yellow ceiling. The chandeliers in this station are huge. The photos below do not do this station justice.  For me, this station resembles a presidential palace.  You hace to see it for yourself to truly appreciate it.

Because of it’s location, this is one of the busiest stations in the Moscow metro as it serves three of the main train stations in the city – Leningradsky, Yaroslavsky, and Kazansky so be prepared for a lot of people.

When you are ready to leave Komsomolskaya metro station behind, then get back on the circle line and go one stop to Kurskaya and change to the blue line (line 3) and go to two stops to the Elektrozavodskaya station. This station gets it’s name from a nearby electric light bulb factory and has a somewhat industrial but also futuristic style, with 6 rows of circular lamps (there are 318 lamps in total). I think this is one of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro for how unique it is. The station was opened in 1944 after a delay because of the 2nd World War and features 12 marble bas-reliefs of the struggle on the home front during the war.

Ploschad Revolyutsii

Back on the metro line 3 (but in the other direction), getting off at the 3rd stop – Ploschad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). This is located underneath the square in Moscow of the same name and is a short walk from Red Square in the city centre. It is the perfect place to end a visit around Moscow’s metro. The station features red and yellow marble arches with a total of 76 sculptures in between each arch. The sculptures are supposed to represent the people of the Soviet Union and include soldiers, farmers, industrial workers, children etc… I noticed a lot of people touching the golden chicken in the photo below as well as the show of the woman. I am assuming that this is for good luck.

Kievskaya definitely caught me off guard. Didn’t know Moscow metro stations were THIS extravagant! Mayakovskaya is gorgeous too with the marble walls and mosaics. I might just need to book a flight over to admire all of these!

Do it! Kievskaya was my first introduction to the Moscow metro as I got an overnight train from Kyiv.

You know, in the States, all we ever hear is bad stuff about Russia. It’s nice to see other (and lovely!) dimensions of such a controversial place.

It’s the same in the UK which is why I prefer going to see somewhere and making up my own mind. It’s all ‘politics and bullshit’ as I say

I went to Moscow about 13years for Christmas and went to train stations, so I can see these amazing mosaics and chandeliers. I agree with you that are beautiful Stations for sure and I could of wandered around for days. I think Kievskaya is definitely my favourite out of them all and I even have some similar pictures as you.

I imagine Moscow would have been a little different 13 years ago but these stations have probably always looked beautiful

Wow, it is just stunning! How does anyone get to work with so much to look at. I’m surprised at the very bourgeois-looking Komsomolskaya station. I would have thought it was all too Tzarist looking, but then I haven’t been to Russia yet lol. This has just made me want to go more!

Generally most of the stations are from 1940-1960 approximately. The later stations are more functional than style.

My mother-in-law was in Moscow fifty years ago and still raves about the metro stations. So far, I could not imagine much. But now! The pictures are great and I think it’s almost a pity that this splendor is underground. But for every user of the Metro can enjoy a free trip to the world of art. Susanne

Oh wow, I would never have known that these were metro stations. The ceilings remind me of how you need to look up sometimes, even in the commuter rush!

They certainly don’t look like metro stations. The ceiling there is one of my favourites too!
